Time Out says

Calling all '90s hip-hop fans, this stadium tour is insane in the membrane

In news that’s got teens of the '90s giddy, some of hip-hop’s heavy-hitters are making their way Down Under in March 2023. American rapper and actor   Ice Cube   is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his famous 1993   Lethal Injection   album, with   Cypress Hill   and   The Game   in tow. They’ll be performing at Rod Laver Arena, as well as in Sydney, Adelaide and Brissy.

They’re big names, and the shows will be big, in-your-face productions. “I love performing in Australia. It’s been four long years since my last visit and I can’t wait to return for a couple of history-making shows in 2023,” says Mr Cube, who’s famous for politically-driven solo albums. He's also known for his lyrics on N.W.A’s 1988 album   Straight Outta Compton , which were instrumental in the development of gangsta rap. Ice Cube’s musical mastery saw him and N.W.A. inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Californian rap group Cypress Hill of ‘Insane in the Brain’ fame earned fans around the world (as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and three Grammy Award nominations) thanks to their genre-shifting sonic tapestry. The group introduced Latino sounds and rhymes to hip-hop. Cypress Hill also celebrates an anniversary next year – 2023 will be 30 years since they released   Black Sunday , the album featuring songs like ‘Hits from the Bong’ and ‘I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That’.

Then there’s double-platinum artist The Game, who emerged from the US’s West Coast hip-hop scene in the early 2000s with his intensely autobiographical narratives.

These huge international acts will also be joined by some exciting homegrown Aussie talent (still to be announced).

Tickets go on sale to the public at 2pm (local time) on Wednesday, November 22, 2022.   Buy tickets here .

O’Shea Jackson Sr., AKA Ice Cube, is an American rapper, actor, and filmmaker. His lyrics on N.W.A’s 1988 album Straight Outta Compton were instrumental in gangsta rap’s widespread popularity, and his politically-driven solo albums AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, Death Certificate, and The Predator gained critical and commercial success. This is Ice Cube’s first show in the country since making history in 2018 by being the first ever rap artist to headline at the Sydney Opera House, also aligning with the 30th anniversary of his 1993 album, Lethal Injection.

“I love performing in Australia. It’s been four long years since my last visit and I can’t wait to return for a couple of history-making shows in 2023,” says Mr Cube.

As their music captivated millions of listeners, Cypress Hill earned fans around the world thanks to their riveting stage show. The California rap group ushered in a genre-shifting sonic tapestry, performed thousands of shows at a time when rappers were having a hard time getting booked for live gigs, and helped pave the way for rappers to use Spanish in their rhymes.

Along the way, Cypress Hill earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, sold more than 9million albums, and were nominated for three Grammy Awards. Another anniversary, 2023 will be 30 years since the crew released their album, Black Sunday, which features, ‘Hits from the Bong,’ and ‘I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That.’

Completing the killer lineup is double-platinum artist The Game. Emerging in the early 2000s as one of the rawest voices on the West Coast scene, combining intense autobiographical narratives and a creatively referential approach to hip-hop that has justified his stage name.

The international hip-hop heavyweights will be joined by exciting homegrown Australian talent, still to be announced.

Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and The Game to Tour Australia in 2023

By Giuliano Ferla

Three icons of 90s/00s rap,  Ice Cube ,  Cypress Hill   and  The Game , have announced a multi-headline arena tour of Australia in March 2023. The tour comes at an auspicious time for Cube, as he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his fourth solo album,  Lethal Injection. Ice Cube was a founding member of seminal gangster rap group N.W.A, which also featured of Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and MC Ren.

Dre and Cube were early pioneers of G-funk, a style of gangster rap heavily influenced by the P-funk styles of  George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic . G-funk was pervasive in its popularity and greatly influenced  Kendrick Lamar ’s 2015 album  To Pimp a Butterfly.

Ice Cube – Bop Gun (One Nation)

Ice Cube was criticised by Dr. Dre on the latter’s 1992 album,  The Chronic , and  years of acrimony  between the two followed. Although, as of 2015 it appears the pair have overcome their differences, with Cube and Dre appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone to promote the N.W.A biopic,  Straight Outta Compton.

Ice Cube will be joined on the tour by fellow Californian hip hop trio, Cypress Hill, who are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their second album,  Black Sunday.  Early 2000s Compton rapper, The Game, rounds out the lineup. Shows have been announced in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane.

Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and The Game: 2023 Australian Tour

Add three more names to the hefty list of big music stars heading Australia's way in 2023: Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and The Game. In what's basically a 90s and 00s hip hop and rap fan's dream come true, the trio are teaming up on the same bill for an Aussie arena tour, including hitting Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney in autumn.

This isn't just any old nostalgia-dripping tour, either. It'll also mark the 30th anniversary of two influential albums: Ice Cube's Lethal Injection and Cypress Hill's Black Sunday . The former was the N.W.A member's fourth solo release, and included singles 'Really Doe', 'You Know How We Do It' and 'Bop Gun (One Nation)', while the latter gave the world 'Insane in the Brain', 'Hits from the Bong', 'When the Shit Goes Down' and 'I Ain't Goin' Out Like That'.

Expect to hear plenty of those songs get a whirl on Sunday, March 26 in the Harbour City.

For Ice Cube, the tour marks his first visit to Australia since 2018, when he became the first-ever rap artist to headline at the Sydney Opera House.

"I love performing in Australia. It's been four long years since my last visit and I can't wait to return for a couple of history-making shows in 2023," said the rapper, aka O'Shea Jackson Sr (and yes, his son O'Shea Jackson Jr did play him in N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton ).

Ice Cube and Cypress Hill will be joined by The Game, who came to fame in the 00s in the West Coast scene. The US talents will also feature Aussie talent in support, with exactly who else will take to the stage yet to be announced.

Hip hop heavyweight Ice Cube leads a contingent of West Coast legends on an Australian tour next March.

Ice Cube unites with Cypress Hill and The Game in an unmissable triple-headliner hitting Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane.

Promising large-scale production, the shows will see three of the biggest names in hip hop grace the stage to perform iconic hits from their extensive catalogues.

Born O’Shea Jackson Sr in 1969, Ice Cube helped develop the West Coast rap scene in the late ‘80s as a member of N.W.A. and is a leading progenitor of gangsta rap, owing to his immense lyrical contributions on the group’s 1988 album ‘Straight Outta Compton’.

By the early ’90s Ice Cube had embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut ‘AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted’ in 1990, which courted further contempt and controversy for its lyrics.

Throughout subsequent releases, Ice Cube solidified his reputation as an unapologetic truth-teller holding up a harsh mirror against the ills and injustices of society.

Among his massive swag of hits and classics, Ice Cube is perhaps best-known for urban hymns ‘It Was A Good Day’ and ‘Check Yo Self’.

Ice Cube has also maintained a prolific film career since the ‘90s, debuting as Doughboy in John Singleton’s ‘Boyz N The Hood’. He’s also turned his hand to filmmaking, co-writing and producing the cult favourite ‘Friday’ series.

Alongside Ice Cube, Cypress Hill played a pivotal role in defining the West Coast scene with a string of iconic hits throughout the ‘90s, including ‘Insane In The Brain’, ‘How I Could Just Kill A Man’, ‘Dr Greenthumb’ and ‘When The Shit Goes Down’.

The Game is a Compton native who came to prominence in the early 2000s with his full-length debut album ‘The Documentary’. Representing a new generation, The Game injected gangsta rap with new credibility due to his former involvement in the violent Crips and Bloods gang feud.

O’Shea Jackson, better known by his stage name Ice Cube, is an American actor, screenwriter, producer, rapper and hip hop artist from Lost Angeles, California.

Born in South Central, Los Angeles on 15 June 1969, Ice Cube began writing raps in high school. In 1984, het met a 19-year-old Dr. Dre, and together they released a single “My Posse” under the alias CIA. The two then teamed up with fellow rappers Easy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella as the group NWA (Niggaz Wit Attitude) and together they released “Straight Outta Compton” in 1988. However, due to creative issues, he left the group and by 1989 was pursuing his solo career. His debut album, “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” was released in 1990 and despite claims of misogyny and racism, was extremely successful. The follow-up record was even more controversial; however his most critically acclaimed album was his 1992 “The Predator.”

Having had so much success as a solo artist, Ice Cube still continued to work with other artists. 1994 saw him reunited with former NWA member, Dr. Dre, and together they recorded and relased “Natural Born Killaz,” and 1996 was the formation of Westside Connection, a collaboration with Mack 10 and WC.

The late 90s found Ice Cube concentrating on his acting career such as “Barber Shop” and “All About The Benjamins,” but he still found time to work on music. He was still collaborating with other artists like his appearance on Lil Jon & The East Side Boys’ “Real Nigga Roll Call,” and in 2003 The Westside Connection reunited for their sophomore album “Gangsta Nation.”

His most recent music musings with a new single release on 10 February 2014 “Sic Them Youngins On ‘Em.”

Live reviews

If we’re talking about hip hop credibility, I’m not sure you can really top having been one of the members of N.W.A. As far as I’m concerned, then, Ice Cube gets a free pass for life. “What about some of the horrendous films he’s been in?” I hear you cry. Nope, not having it. He was on Straight Outta Compton. “How about his tepidly-received recent solo record, I Am the West?” Nah, sorry, ‘Express Yourself’. “Hasn’t he been in adverts for the almost-beer Coors Light?” That’s alright by me - ‘Gangsta Gangsta’. I could continue in this vein for some time.

As a solo performer, Ice Cube was really one of the pioneers of conscious hip hop, teaming his brutally honest lyricism with an obviously complementary aggression. He brings that kind of energy to the stage, too, with his last UK shows of two years ago blending some of his stone-cold classics - ‘It Was a Good Day’, ‘Check Yo Self’, ‘Natural Born Killaz’ - with the more raucous side of his recent output, with ‘You Can Do It’ meeting with a particularly feverish reception. He keeps things pretty sparse on stage - a DJ dropping beats, and a hype man - but what else does he need? The man is a bona fide hip hop legend. Don’t sleep on his shows next time he’s in the UK.

O'Shea Jackson, Sr., better known by his stage name Ice Cube is one of America's most prolific rappers and having sold over 25 million records globally he still has huge demand to be seen live. A pioneer of his times, the brutal aggression in which Jackson delivered his work on records such as 'The Predator' was seen as refreshing and innovative.

Now over twenty years later, audiences still flock to see this influential performer live. Arriving to the sound of booming bass lines and piercing percussion, Ice Cube's hype man takes to the stage first to make sure the crowd are suitably excited before the main man himself arrives to perform 'I Rep That West'. The sound is fantastic and despite his arrogant demeanour, Jackson seems comfortable onstage and does build rapport with his audience.

They erupt in mass pandemonium for classics such as 'Check Yo Self' and 'It Was A Good Day'. Although with the British audience, one track was always going to get a bigger reaction than the others and the opening bars of 'You Can Do It' evoke such a cheer it could have taken the roof off.

Ice Cube is all about that feel good, old school gangsta rap. He is a massive name in the music industry and in rap circles and continues to be a wonder to see on stage. He owns the stage like the icon he knows he is and the audience go crazy for him, thrilled to be in the presence of such an old school legend. Ice Cube looks as angry on stage as he always does, with those distinctive eyebrows making an appearance. However, he is clearly loving life on stage and commands the crowd with a confident ease, appearing just effortlessly cool. His lyrics are real and honest and his rapping is seamless. The hip hop beats are smooth and entertaining. There are no criticisms to be found. Ice Cube performed all the classics, from ‘Check Yo Self’ to ‘It Was a Good Day’ and ‘Natural Born Killaz’. Best of all, he even went back to his N.W.A days and delighted the crowd with a surprise performance of the classic hit ‘Express Yourself’.

the show was very much wack I believe that a refund should be gave. Why would fans would go the the VIP up front and with Liquor and stupid people Does not mix. For having Ice cube played 5 songs? Police came in and with tables and chairs being thrown. Both my Wife and I for disabled too see the whole Vip section go up in dust and it was coming our way. My foot was caught lucky part the fight when threw us at least. I wouldn't know if ICE CUBE WOULD BE ALLOWED BUT THE THE CITY OF LB.PEOPLE BUYING FOOD JUST THREW IT ON THE FLOOR AND RAN. VERY IMMATURE, Great place for allowing music. but seeing both males and females in blood and cuts. plus taking kids and smoking weed in front of them wasn't cool

Had a phenomenal time!! Even though it was all about Parq's 2 year anniversary, just being in the building with Ice Cube was the dopest feeling in the world. Nice layout, great location.

My only gripe was basically....how many times can a DJ play one song at least three times in one hour? He tried to switch up variations but it failed. I was there from 1030 to 130 and I heard at least 7 songs played 2-3x each. It shows you have no catalogue depth or maybe the people have no depth. Not saying IKON was a bad dj at all, but at least show you know more music. Radio stations play songs out, DJ's introduce songs to the world.

Cube is a great performer!! It was an awesome concert and great to see him and his son doing it up on stage!! What a treat!! :)

To bad we the audience had some bad apples that couldn't get it together and allow Ice Cube to finish his performance. I feel he handled the situation as anyone would!

Can't wait to see him again!

I need a refund on this last night's performance 3/7/19 at the Anthem. It sucks that no emails or text messages were sent out for a cancelled show. I came out in the cold, spent money on parking, dinner & drinks for nothing. Thanks for ruining my Birthday celebration, I should've went to see Cypress Hill instead.

Best show I've been to. None of this BS singing over lyrics, only the real deal. Ice Cube is a true performer! The surprise visit of M.C. Ren and DJ Yella was pretty amazing too!

About Ice Cube

Ice Cube avatar

Ice Cube is a hip-hop living legend that helped gangsta rap enter the mainstream. He was part of N.W.A., which promoted a street message once Stright Out Of Compton hit the market in 1988. They delivered their message of struggle during hard times in Los Angeles and, along with Eazy E and Dr. Dre, have pushed lyrical limits with tracks like "Fuck The Police." The multi-platinum rated MC, director and actor is no stranger to success. After departing from the group, Ice Cube was free and would go on to produce memorable, explicit, and boundary bending records. His dedication to the rap culture prompted him towards Hollywood, where he produced, directed, and starred in hood movies such as "Friday." Always focusing on social and cultural conflicts, Ice Cube is a lyrical activist for a good cause. While his passions may seem mainstream and unmeaningful, his message hit his mark!

Ice Cube and Cypress Hill still do it better than most

Ice Cube photographed from the side, turning his head to camera. He's in a small room with newspaper on the walls.

  • X (formerly Twitter)

It's the biggest hip hop tour of 2023 so far, and a line-up like this will take some beating.

Californian icons Ice Cube and Cypress Hill are in town, 29 years after their last co-headline tour of Australia, and they're gonna show us that these legends of the game still have plenty of fire in their belly.

With all respect to The Game, a West Coast hip hop superstar in his own right, his last-minute withdrawal from this tour seems like a blessing when A.B. Original rip through their searing set of hardcore hip hop.

'Take Me Home', '2 Black 2 Strong', 'King Billy Cokebottle' and 'January 26' sound enormous on tonight's massive stage, a stage that Briggs and Trials are not even remotely intimidated by. They own every inch of it, and deliver a set that's relentless and world class.

It has been many years since most of us saw A.B. Original play live, long enough for some to have forgotten just how potent a force these two men are together. With new music on the way and plenty left to say, we can only hope they'll be in our faces a hell of a lot more in the coming year.

It won't surprise you to hear that Cypress Hill 's B-Real , one of the defining voices of both 90s hip hop and stoner culture, ambles onstage smoking a joint tonight.

What might surprise you, however, is that he's an indefatigable force who does not miss a beat all night. A poster child for the functioning stoner.

Cypress Hill's set is marred by poor sound, a technical issue they acknowledge and apologise for. Thankfully it's not enough to entirely kill the vibe, which is laidback, intense and euphoric in different parts.

B-Real barely stops for a breath as he punches through versions of stoner anthems 'Roll It Up, Light It Up, Smoke It Up', 'I Wanna Get High', 'Cisco Kid', 'Dr. Greenthumb', and 'Hits From the Bong'. The crowd passes around a comically enormous inflatable joint, as the air fills with the smell of… well you can probably guess.

Sen Dog , an equally key part of Cypress Hill who provides rock solid support to B-Real for much of the show, gets a chance to really shine on 1998 track 'Tequila Sunrise' and 'Latin Lingo' from the group's formidable 1991 debut.

'Hand On The Pump' and 'How I Can Just Kill A Man' from that same record goes down a treat with the crowd, both still sounding super vital over 30 years from their release.

When those technical issues get too much to bear, and DJ Lord is taken out of commission for a moment, Sen Dog, B Real and percussionist Eric Bobo deliver an impressive version of 'I Ain't Goin' Out Like That', showing supreme class under pressure.

'Rock Superstar' is an epic song that reminds us just how much extravagant, blockbuster sounding hip hop was being made in the early 2000s. Even in a set packed to the brim with classic songs, their 1993 anthem 'Insane In The Brain' closes out the set on an even greater high (no pun intended) than they'd hit previously tonight.

Forget what you think you know about stoners, there's no childish skits or goofing around here – it's all business. Theirs is such a solid, no bullshit show. All four members earn their keep across an hour jam-packed with iconic songs, all of them as potent as ever.

Ice Cube has a legacy like few others. Thirty-five years on from N.W.A.'s ground-breaking album Straight Outta Compton – a record that terrified as many as it inspired – he's making sure we don't forget who started this gangsta shit.

He wastes no time getting to the point, ripping through Dr Dre collabs 'Natural Born Killaz' and 'Hello', before taking us way back with 'Check Yo Self' and 'Friday', two iconic and thrilling throwbacks that truly make it feel like the mid-90s all over again. At least for those of us in the crowd who were alive at the time.

If his pre-set playlist wasn't enough, Cube further shows his love of funk and soul with a version of 'Bop Gun (One Nation)', before WC, Cube's right-hand man for the entire set, fires up and delivers killer verses on Westside Connection tunes 'Bow Down' and 'Gangsta Nation'.

'You Know How We Do It' closes out this part of the set, after which Cube says the fun is over and it's time for things to get serious. He's not lying, what comes next feels like a significant gear shift and one that gives this set extra depth.

He delivers a couple of 2000s cuts, 'Why We Thugs' and 'Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It', and does so with a palpable fury. The party isn't over, it's just paused, as he fires off missives about the hypocrisy of blaming hip hop for societal ills while ignoring the systematic forces that drive some young black men to crime.

It's not a point he labours, and these songs won't be highlights for many tonight, but it's an important spot of shade among the brightness of the rest of his set and one that sees him dig deep for some of his most incendiary performances of the night.

Anyone expecting a cavalcade of N.W.A. hits might be disappointed, but high energy versions of 'Straight Outta Compton' and 'Gangsta Gangsta' get everyone screaming along.

Cube spends a decent chunk of time reflecting on the legacy of his infamous group and just how wild it was to be a teenager in "the world's most dangerous group".

He also talks about leaving the group before ripping through a vicious 'No Vaseline', the diss track he felt compelled to write and that he claims is still the greatest diss track ever written. You don't get to be Ice Cube without that kind of confidence.

'You Can Do It' very much brings back the party vibe and even though we all see it coming from a mile off, no one can deny how good it feels to hear that Isley Brothers sample that signals the start of set closer 'It Was A Good Day'.

The quality of Cube's material speaks for itself, but it's his ability as a performer that keeps him such a relevant force in 2023.

He raps with a clarity that sees him stand head and shoulders above so many of his peers. You can make out every single word he says in every song, so crisp is his delivery. We can't be sure if rapping made him a better actor, but it's very possible that acting has made him a better rapper.

The stage show is extremely understated. Just the two MCs, a couple of screens projecting well-crafted visuals, and lighting that is bold and effective but not particularly flashy. Its simplicity is effective.

The show is generally well paced, and the between song banter is sharper and more gripping than you'll see at most rap shows. It's still riddled with cliche – it has literally never mattered which side of a crowd is louder – and, honestly, it's not even all that funny, but it pushes the set along nicely.

His best moment of chat comes with the declaration that hip hop at its best when we're sharing stories and seeing the similarities in our stories, despite how great our differences might seem.

It's a fitting comment. Brisbane is a far cry from Los Angeles in the 80s. For most of us, these stories do not necessarily echo our lived experiences. But there are undoubtedly parts of his art that resonate strongly with some, and for those who can't necessarily relate, we can at least listen and learn.

There are roughly 13,000 people here tonight, relishing the stories and songs of one of the world's great modern-day poets, and Ice Cube gives us every reason to buy a ticket again when he inevitably returns.

"I remember when they said hip hop was a fad," he says towards the end of tonight's set. "That it wouldn’t last. Now it’s the biggest genre in the motherfucking world."

If experienced campaigners like Ice Cube and Cypress Hill can continue setting an example as strong as this, there's no reason the genre can't get bigger and better across the next 35 years.
