Tennis String Selection

There are 3 issues concerning the selection of the proper tennis string: Material, Gauge and String Tension.

There are 3 types of materials you can choose for your tennis racquet. Natiral Gut, Synthetic Gut and Hybrids

Natural Gut

B est quality, excellent feel and elasticity, good tension stability and liveliness BUT average durability and some quality loss at extreme temperatures. You may check natural gut strings here:  http://bit.ly/2Q72rkw

Synthetic Gut

T hese tennis strings ( http://bit.ly/2rXQaa7 ) have different qualities. They are classified into 4 main categories:

Polyester strings

Can be 100% polyester or co-polyester if used along with Kevlar fibers. This is the durability category; the choice for hard hitters, string breakers, and people without arm problems. Expect harsher hits (very harsh with Kevlar) with above average control. Kevlar (aramid fiber) is extremely durable and holds tension very good. Polyester has much more playability, holds tension fair. A good category of string when you're looking for maximum durability and control. Especially monofilament polyester strings are rigid and are preferred by advanced/professional players as they improve their ball control.  You may check polyester tennis strings here:   http://bit.ly/35IY1a5

Nylon strings

T his is the basic and most popular string choice in tennis and also one of the cheapest. Crisp feel, good combination of power and control, reasonably durable and good tension holding make these strings ideal for intermediate players who break their strings frequently).  You may check nylon tennis strings here:  http://bit.ly/2saUeUr

Multifilament strin gs

T he top category after natural gut. Best overall playability, gentle on the arm, but punishing to your opponent. The fraying (as they wear) may annoy some players. Holds tension fair. A good choice when you're looking for an arm friendly string - absorbs more shock load at impact, with good power and control.  You may check multifilament tennis strings here:  http://bit.ly/38X0XSo

T extured strings

T hese are the strings that have an added raised band to give the string texture in order to increase string-ball friction during contact and produce more spin on the tennis ball. Ideal for those who want to improve their shot control through topspin.   You may check textured tennis strings here:  http://bit.ly/2Z8ynZG

Hybrid stringing consists of using different strings in the main and cross strings of a racquet. Hybrid stringing is gaining popularity as more players are looking for a blend of string qualities. By selecting different hybrid combinations of string, players can fine-tune the playability, comfort, durability, liveliness and control.  You may check hybrid tennis strings here:  http://bit.ly/2tBI5Ip

Selecting the Main string

When choosing a hybrid, note that the main string will dominate the overall feel and playability of the two strings. For example, if you are seeking durability, then the most durable of the two strings selected should be chosen as the main string. If your overall goal is playability, then the string with the most desirable playing characteristics should be chosen as the main string.

Selecting the Cross string

Think of the cross string as having an influence on the main string. While you will not get the full benefit of the string's playing characteristics, the overall feel will be altered. For example, a soft and forgiving cross string, such as natural gut or multifilament synthetic, can soften-up a stiff and durable main string, such as polyester.

Selecting a Tension

To further customize your hybrid selection, you can vary the tension between strings. As a general rule, main strings should be strung tighter than cross strings. This is a popular set-up with professional players and is a good way of increasing the size of the sweetspot. A tension variance of 1 kg is recommended (maximum tension variance of 2 kg on hybrid stringing).

Thinner gauges play better, and deliver more power, more control and/or spin (better bite on the ball). They simply feel better and are less stressful on your arm. However, thinner gauges break more often. So it is a good idea to start with a 1.25mm gauge and only if you break it too often move to 1.30mm gauge.

Approximate Gauge diameters:

S TRING T ENSION

As a rule of thumb always string your racquet within the range stenciled on its side. A good idea is to firstly string your racquet at the mean tension the manufacturer suggests (if this range is 24-28kg, string it at 26kg). If you need more power in your shots just lower string tension by 1-2kgr next time you string it. If you need more control just do the opposite as higher string tension generates more ball control.

Final note : Keep in mind that decreased string density (fewer strings on the tennis racquet, e.g. 16 x 18) generates more power and spin. On the other hand increased string density (more strings on the racquet, e.g. 18 x 20) generates more control. This has to do with the selection of a tennis racquet as a certain racquet cannot be strung with more or less strings on it.

Head Extreme Tour Racquet Review

Wilson Clash 100 Racquet Main Image

Our TW playtesters raved about the first Head Extreme Tour, which gave this Extreme Tour 2022 update some big shoes to fill. Head's answer is to utilize Auxetic construction in the yoke of this racquet. According to Head, the Auxetic update optimizes the feel and response of the racquet according to how hard you are hitting the ball. Another goal with this update is an expanded sweetspot for a more consistent response on off-center hits. Spin grommets have been included in this generation to help generate more spin from greater string movement. The Extreme Tour 2022 stands out from other spin racquets by providing a plush 63 RA stiffness rating that offers players more comfort throughout long hitting sessions and matches. Aside from excellent spin, our team was pleasantly surprised by the amount of stability they found. For a 317 swingweight racquet, the Extreme Tour held its own against powerful hitters. Overall, Head improves on the Extreme Tour while maintaining the aspects that already made it shine. Our playtesters recommend this racquet for players who want controllable spin with maximum comfort and speed.

  • Maneuverability
  • Effortless depth
  • Low stiffness for spin racquet
  • Love it or hate it cosmetic

Groundstrokes - Score: 81

As our team expected, the Head Extreme Tour 2022 offers a massive amount of spin to players. With the spin grommets and ultra-fast swingweight, this racquet let our playtesters easily ramp up speed when necessary. With her background on clay courts, Zsofi loved how much spin she could generate when hitting with the Extreme Tour. She said, "I really enjoyed the easy depth I was getting with the new Extreme Tour on the baseline! It was one of the first things that stood out for me when I picked up the racquet. I was able to easily open up the court with more aggressive angles and move my opponents around. I grew up playing on the red clay courts of Europe, so I especially appreciate a racquet that is able to give me that extra spin I am looking for, and the new Extreme Tour did just that. It's a super spin-friendly racquet, so if that is something that you are looking for, give this one a go!"

Michelle found it simple to shape the ball to keep her opponents deep in the court. She said, "The first thing I realized about this racquet was how fast it played. It was explosive, but still stable for its weight. I tested this Extreme Tour after playtesting some extended-length racquets that were on the beefier side and a bit hefty to swing, and this racquet was quite the opposite, so it was a nice change of pace! I did note at times that I was missing some mass in the racquet's head and could have used that extra weight to push through the ball. I like to lead with the tip of my racquet through the ball and felt like the tip was struggling to come through when I went for bigger shots. For me, this was an easy sign that this racquet would perform well with a tiny bit of customization. The sweetspot, however, did feel forgiving, and it was easy to get some arch on the ball. I enjoyed working on shots with more topspin, pushing my opponents back with the ball jumping up rather than penetrating through the court."

Among a long list of positives, the standout feature for Andrew was how comfortable the racquet felt. He explained, "The Head Extreme Tour meshed well with my play style from the baseline. I found it easy to maneuver for my topspin forehands and stable enough for my slice and flatter backhands. The lower RA was noticeable and made my hitting experience comfortable compared to other spin racquets, which is a huge advantage. The response was not lacking even though the racquet offered more flexibility. As it does with other racquets, Auxetic technology seemed to make the sweetspot large and consistent — a huge bonus since it is pretty easy for me to hit outside the sweetspot when ramping up on spin. Lastly, the lower swingweight made it simple to get the racquet moving when I was on the run or in defensive scenarios."

Mark took note of how well the Extreme Tour handled slice and topspin backhands. He said, "I spend most of my tennis time playing from the baseline, so I look for racquets that are heavy enough to be stable, yet light enough to maneuver during long matches and groundstroke exchanges. Overall, my groundstrokes were sound; however, the new Head Extreme Tour errs slightly on the side of maneuverability and not stability, so I was feeling the weight of the ball on my stringbed more. After the second hour of play, the issue was cured with an increase in swing speed to get the shot depth I need. Lastly, its 16x19 pattern looks and feels tighter than the Extreme MP's, yet it still allows for easy generation of topspin and complements my backhand slice better than expected."

Volleys - Score: 80

At net, our playtesters found the Head Extreme Tour 2022 to offer quick maneuverability and sufficient stability against heavy hitters. Michelle and Zsofi both play high-level doubles, and the Extreme Tour easily handled their quick exchanges. Michelle said, "At net, I found this racquet fairly easy to use. However, I did find it more effective to really punch volleys to make sure they had some snap behind them. It was super maneuverable, and I didn't have any issues with stability even against the big hitters — no wobbles luckily!"

Zsofi added, "I play a lot of doubles nowadays, and I really appreciated the extreme stability of this racquet at net. Even if I only had time for a quick reflex volley, I still felt stable during the shot and could trust the Extreme Tour to do its job."

Mark had to put in some extra effort to find success on volleys with this racquet. He said, "As I mentioned with regards to play from the baseline, could feel the weight of the ball on the stringbed of the Extreme Tour 2022 a little more than I do with racquets that feature a higher swingweight. So, where I would typically just make contact with the volleyed shot, I had to punch forward with the Extreme Tour to keep my volleys from being pounced on by my opponent."

While he generally prefers to stay on the baseline, Andrew was able to utilize a wide variety of shots at net with the Extreme Tour. He said, "Although I don't prefer the net in most cases, the Extreme Tour offered quick speed and easy playability in situations when I had to move up. My biggest concern when initially hitting the Extreme was the speed-to-stability ratio. With a sub-320 swingweight, the Extreme Tour held up surprisingly well when blocking back powerful shots. I never felt the racquet twisting, unless I really messed up and hit near the edge of the frame. Otherwise, I was able to volley with a good amount of variety, from drop touch shots to deep, penetrating volleys."

Serves - Score: 82

Out of all the parts of this playtest, our team thought the Head Extreme Tour 2022 performed best on serves. The swing speed made it easy to generate racquet head speed, and the spin grommets boosted kicks and slices. Andrew favored serving with the Extreme Tour over other spin racquets due to its low RA and the comfort he found from the Auxetic technology. He said, "I have had some shoulder and wrist issues in the past, but the quickness and power potential made the Extreme Tour super easy to serve with. I found my favorite serve to be my slice serve. The racquet was fast, yet controllable enough to keep the ball in play when pushing serves out wide. Of course, with the spin grommets, I could also get the ball to kick up on topspin serves, which gave me some serving versatility. The serve I really had to focus on was my flat serve. With the Extreme Tour's depth generation, I had to pay attention to my contact to keep the ball from landing out."

Zsofi felt very confident with this racquet in her hands and was able to go for riskier serves with more success than usual. She said, "The new Head Extreme Tour was awesome on my serves! My serve is not normally a shot I lean on as a strong weapon, but with the new Extreme Tour I felt brave enough to pick riskier targets, and I was able to generate easy power."

Michelle and Mark both found serves to be their favorite shot of the playtest. Mark described, "As with every other shot I hit with Head's new Extreme Tour, I found myself having to use more tip speed to get an effective level of pace and spin on my serves. Where I maybe struggled a bit more at net and from the baseline with this racquet, the fast-swinging nature of the Extreme Tour catered to good action and pace on the ball, making the serve my best shot of the playtest."

"This was one of the bright spots of the playtest for me because the lower swingweight reacted really well to every serve," Michelle added. "The targeting felt very dialed in as well. I could flatten out serves easily, but I also really enjoyed hitting second serves with this racquet. It wasn't demanding at all, and I could really get momentum going through the ball. I loved hitting big flat 'T' serves on both sides!"

Returns - Score: 76

With its high swing speed, the Head Extreme Tour 2022 had our playtesters questioning if the stability would provide enough confidence to return against big servers. By the time testing was through, they were happy to find that the Extreme Tour performed extraordinarily well for its sub-320 swingweight. The Extreme Tour made it simple to get in front of the ball, allowing the user to be more spin-aggressive than with racquets with higher swingweights. Andrew usually hits a counter-punch return, but he was able to return more serves with topspin and angles with the Extreme Tour 2022. He described, "The Extreme Tour was great on returns. Typically, I like to return with a chip or flat counterpunch, but the Extreme Tour gave me so much confidence to hit with spin that I was slicing or adding topspin to most of my returns. Flat returns were still there when I wanted them, but I really enjoyed being able to comfortably use spin to angle my returns off the center of the court. As with other shots, the Tour held up well against big serves for how fast it was. Overall, this is one of the better racquets I've hit this year for serve returns."

The Extreme Tour was able to give Michelle the classic 'one-two' winner combo. She said, "It was fun to swing big on returns with this Extreme Tour. I felt pretty good about hitting my targets and loved going for a big ball down the line, but I also liked hitting angles off the outer wings to move my opponent off the court and create an opening for a one-two combo. The racquet was fairly forgiving, and even if I didn't always find the sweetspot, I felt like I was OK."

With the Extreme Tour's power potential, Zsofi was able to hone her tactics to get the most out of her returns with this racquet. She said, "Because of the great stability of the Extreme Tour 2022 and the easy depth I was able to generate, my returns felt great and very stable. The launch angle was a bit higher than I am used to, so I had to keep it in mind and dial my returns back a bit sometimes, but once I got used to that, it really wasn't a problem."

Mark had mixed results when it came to return of serve. He wrapped up the playtest, saying, "Other than the volley, the return of serve was the shot where I could really feel the weight of the ball on the racquet, basically demanding that I ditch my chip return and swing through contact of the ball. As a result, my return of serve was a little erratic."

Overall - Score: 81

Mark - "The Extreme Tour 2022 is very fast, comfortable and easy to swing from anywhere on the court. It is surprisingly stable for a racquet with an inertia number lower than 320. Specifically, the new Extreme Tour forces me to play more assertively off the first ball, instead of always relying on long point strategies. I also like the more subtle used-tennis-ball tone of yellow for the 2022 cosmetic over the brighter new-ball yellow of the prior iteration."

Zsofi - "The racquet not only looks great but performs amazingly as well! I really need something stable that gives me that 'extra' I'm looking for, and this racquet does just that. Easy depth, crazy spin and outstanding stability on all shots."

Andrew - "It's super fast and still has plenty of stability for my game. Spin is easily accessible, and the racquet is even more comfortable with Auxetic tech and a lower RA."

Michelle - "Super speedy and stable for its weight. Easy access to spin. Fun to serve with and target different spots in the box. A good platform racquet for customization."

Mark - "Ironically, the benefits the Extreme Tour affords me are the same traits that challenge me. I have a harder time playing defensively due to the sub-320 swingweight and the degree of head-light balance. This encourages me to play more of a first-strike style of tennis, which does not come naturally to me. I am certain adding a smidge of weight to the hoop would cure that and allow me to more easily play my counterpunch style of tennis."

Zsofi - "The only somewhat negative note I can think of is that I sometimes struggle with bringing the racquet head around fast enough on my backhands. Basically, maneuverability wasn't always that easy for me, but once I spent more time with the racquet and got more dialed in, this wasn't really an issue."

Andrew - "Nothing really stands out as a dislike; it does everything I want it to do."

Michelle - "It's a bit light for my personal tastes, and I crave a bit more mass behind the head."

Comparing the racquet to others they've tried, our testers said:

Mark - "The Yonex EZONE 98 exhibits a set of specs that are pretty comparable with this Extreme Tour 2022 , as does the Dunlop CX 200 and the Volkl C10 EVO. Although the swingweight of the Prince ATS Textreme Tour 98 is just over 320, it is similar otherwise."

Zsofi - "The new Head Extreme Tour feels a bit plusher than previous versions. Otherwise, it feels a bit similar to the Yonex VCORE 98 or maybe even the Tecnifibre TFight 305 16x19."

Andrew - "In comparison to previous models, this Extreme Tour has just a bit more flex and comfort. If you are into spin-friendly racquets like the Babolat Pure Aero VS, Pure Aero standard and Yonex VCORE 98, but want more comfort, this is the racquet for you."

Michelle - "I initially wanted to compare this Extreme Tour 2022 to the Prince ATS Textreme Tour 98, but I find that racquet to offer a bit more plow through and this one to be much whippier. It would be comparable to the Yonex VCORE 98, but again, the Extreme Tour is a bit faster through the ball, so it is ideal for players who like a faster swinging racquet, or for players who like to build their own spec."

Head Premier Tour Head Ti Fire Pro Edition 330g These 2 were a long time ago. As of 2024 I haven’t decided on which racquet I would like the most. Some of their frames like the Prestige and Speed lines are too expensive and from about 1998 to 2015 I preferred what Volkl made with their 10 series frames and Becker Melbournes. These days it’s PK Q Tours and Prince Phantoms that I like

On the weekend I played back to back with an Extreme MP 360+, Extreme MP Auxetic, Boom Pro, Radical Pro, Prestige Pro, PT57A 16x19, Liquidmetal Radical, Head Speed Mp (Sinners one to Sinners Spec), Pro Tour Lite XL. I came away thinking I like all of them for different reasons, I think I might like the Pro Tour Lite XL for best all rounder, great feel but with extra power, I liked the Radical Pro best for feel on the newer ones (could be the strings) and I tried a lot of other non Head frames that same day and think my favourite was the H22 16x19 which is trying to be a Head but that had Gut in the mains so that might be why I thought it felt so good. No racket is the best at everything so choosing one is impossible for me.

Adrian Mannarino: 'From Montreal to Moscow, I played with only one racquet'

Tennis - The French player says the situation didn't change after asking if somebody could send him a Babolat Pure Aero racket, that he has been using for years, with a 3 or 4 grip

Adrian Mannarino: 'From Montreal to Moscow, I played with only one racquet'

A few weeks ago, before playing the semi-finals in Tokyo, Adrian Mannarino made a strange request on Twitter. The French player asked if somebody could send him a Babolat Pure Aero racquet, that he has been using for years, with a size 3 or 4 grip.

' Well, the situation didn't change, ' Mannarino revealed in press conference at Paris Bercy following his straight sets win over 2012 champion David Ferrer. 'I have very few racquets left. Between Montreal and Moscow I played with only one racquet .

It is a problem because when you play with low tensions like I do, racquets, the tension changes. And when the match is long, it's a problem. I would like to be able to change my racquets more often to keep control over the ball.

But unfortunately, I had to stay with one racquet and things went well in spite of that. But I don't know what I'm going to do for next year. I don't know if I'm going to keep that model. I might have three or four extra racquets in the garage.

But I can't play the whole season with those racquets. It's not enough. So anyway, I will have a month-and-a-half to think about that problem after this tournament.' What about his string strength (16 kilos). Does he know of anyone who has a similar string strength? 'I don't always play with the 16 kilos.

It depends on the conditions. I change it by two or three kilos sometimes. Other players also play with a very low tension. Jack Sock is at 14 (kilos), Kukushkin 12 or 13 (kilos). Many players have a low tension. It's surprising when you see those figures.

But when other players try my racquet they believe it's quite comfortable and efficient.' Why does he play with the same apparel? ' With my coach, I made a bet that I was going to play with the same outfit the whole year.

I'm not sure I will succeed. I started in Australia with the same outfit. But, indeed, I do not have a sponsor for my clothes. This might change in the future if I have good results. I might have a sponsor. For the time being, it's the end of the season and this is when maybe these things can change.

Some people will help me. I will try to have things change.' ALSO READ : Rafael Nadal: 'I am in Paris Bercy to do my best'

Andy Murray: Former world No 1 to defend Surbiton Trophy title as part of Wimbledon preparation

Andy Murray to defend his title at the Surbiton Trophy at the start of June as part of his Wimbledon preparations; you can watch the conclusion to the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome exclusively live on Sky Sports Tennis

Great Britain's Andy Murray celebrates winning the Men's Singles Final against Austria's Jurij Rodionov on day seven of the 2023 Lexus Surbiton Trophy at Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club, London. Picture date: Sunday June 11, 2023.

Andy Murray will defend his title at the Surbiton Trophy next month as part of his Wimbledon preparations.

The Scot defeated Jurij Rodionov in the final of the second-tier Challenger Tour event last June and will again kick off his grass-court season at the tournament beginning on June 3.

The Surbiton Trophy coincides with the second week of the French Open, which Murray is set to play in for the first time since 2020, indicating he is not anticipating a long stay in Paris.

Murray, who turns 37 on Wednesday, is expected to retire at some point this season and getting as much grass-court preparation as possible ahead of a final tilt at Wimbledon will be the priority.

He will play in the ATP Tour event in Stuttgart the following week rather than defending his Challenger title in Nottingham before heading to Queen's Club.

A serious ankle injury suffered at the Miami Open in March has derailed Murray's swansong but he is returning to action this week at the Challenger event on clay in Bordeaux.

Even in his final months on tour, he is not afraid to make big changes, and this week is trialling a Yonex racket having played with Head throughout his career so far.

Who are Andrey Rublev’s sponsors?

Andrey Rublev made waves when he left Nike to don his own clothing brand on court earlier this year but he still has a few heavyweight backers.

Among Rublev’s top sponsors are Head, Bulgari and Penhaligon.

Rublev had formerly been a Nike athlete but traded the Swoosh for the Rublo Angel’s Wings.

While he no longer wears Nike clothing on court he still dons one of the the American brands flagship tennis shoes.

During the 2023 season Rublev has been spotted wearing the Nike Vapor Pro 2 tennis shoe.

Rublev’s rackets are supplied by Head and he currently uses their Pro Stock Head Gravity Pro, the racket is customised to his specifications and does not mirror the retail version.

The Olympic Gold medalist formerly used Wilson rackets in his junior career and start on the ATP Tour.

Of his own brand, Rublo, Rublev said: “Rublo has been created to drive awareness around equality and kindness with the hope of making our world a better place.

“Choose kindness for yourself, others, and our planet.

“We are all people and consist of the same things.

“There is goodness at the core of every person.”

Jewellry makers Bulgari also have an endorsement deal with Rublev alongside his sponsorship arrangement with British perfumers Penhaligon.

He also has an official partnership with training experts 4 Slam Tennis and is the highest-ranked male player listed as training with the group.

Rublev rents an apartment in Monaco but also reportedly owns a house in Moscow where his family live. He reportedly has a net worth of approximately $5 million.

Rublev’s longtime girlfriend Anastasija Homutova is also a tennis professional, part-time coach and model.

Homutova, who is Latvian but grew up in Moscow, met Rublev during a practise at an event in 2016 and the pair reportedly felt an immediate connection.

According to unverified sources Homutova is a nurturing and caring coach and has a good rapport with her young students.

She is said to be a humble person who shuns the limelight, this is evidenced by the fact that not many people know very much about her at all.

Homutova seems to like it that way but she might well be thrust into the limelight should her long-time partner make a big breakthrough on the ATP Tour.

She has often been spotted in Rublev’s players box at events all over the world and is also a regular feature on his Instagram stories.

Tennis goes Hollywood: 'Challengers' scores big in pop culture

ROME -- With the release of the Luca Guadagnino-directed, Zendaya-starring "Challengers" last month, tennis is having its most significant pop culture moment in a long while.

The film opened to both critical acclaim -- an aggregate score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes -- and commercial success, raking in $52.2m worldwide to date. And more than that, it's managed to set the zeitgeist beyond the world of cinema. In its wake, fashion writers have heralded the advent of "tenniscore" this summer, aided by Zendaya referencing iconic looks by the Williams sisters in photoshoots. Not only the film's leading actress but its co-producer, she is now increasingly talked of as a "heavyweight" and "powerhouse."

From court to camera: Kasatkina & Zabiiako's vlog captures tennis realness

Zendaya pays tribute to williams sisters in vogue photoshoot, zendaya, tom holland watch swiatek win indian wells title.

Former player Laura Robson, who is currently in Rome as part of Wimbledon's international player relations team, has no doubt about why it's been such a hit.

"Tennis is made to look quite sexy," she said. "Everyone's got a great tan. Lots of sweaty closeups."

But what does the tennis world make of it? It's piqued the interest of the tour, but there's some understandable trepidation. As Robson puts it: "There have been a few ropey tennis movies. I was never a huge 'Wimbledon' fan."

Naomi Osaka also kept her expectations low. "I take all tennis movies in stride," the former World No.1 said after her first-round win. But both Osaka and Robson were pleasantly surprised -- not least because the film nailed the look and the vibe of the tennis world.

Osaka enjoyed its depiction of the tennis lifestyle -- the parade of anonymous hotels, the peek into real tournament facilities -- and was impressed that the film focused on lower-level Challengers, not just the Grand Slams. Robson singled out the attention to detail.

Just saw Challengers I’m obsessed. The level of detail I can’t — Laura Robson (@laurarobson5) April 9, 2024

"The fact that the outfits and the equipment were all relevant to that time period," she said. "Someone obviously took a lot of care with that. The fact that Mike Faist [who plays Grand Slam champion Art] was head-to-toe in Uniqlo, but Josh O'Connor [who plays Patrick, who has spent his career in Challengers] was wearing four different sponsors."

Coco Gauff, a fan of the love triangle at the heart of the plot, agreed that the film was meticulous when it came to making the tennis world look realistic.

"The MVP definitely goes to the people who designed the set," the 2023 US Open champion said. "I feel like that was the most accurate when it came to the signage and the logos and all of that."

The catalyst for the plot -- a slumping Art drops down to a Challenger tournament to find match wins and confidence -- also rings true. That's exactly what 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin did last week. On a nine-match losing streak, she entered the WTA 125 in Lleida, Spain, where she ended her drought to reach the second round.

"I wanted to use it as match play," Kenin said after her first-round win over Lucia Bronzetti in Rome. "I didn't go in with expectations, and I got a win, even though I didn't feel 100%. And I did feel it helped me here."

Indeed, it's provided the boost Kenin needed to turn around her season. She followed up the Bronzetti win with an upset of No.8 seed Ons Jabeur in the second round, her first Top 10 victory of the year.

A practice we would be front row for 💜 @CocoGauff 🤝 @Zendaya pic.twitter.com/4NKoaKlYLO — wta (@WTA) April 17, 2024

Less accurate in "Challengers" were the actual scenes of matches and practice. "If we talk about specific tennis stuff, for a professional tennis player it was quite painful to watch," Daria Kasatkina said.

Gauff's coach Brad Gilbert was hired by the film -- and has a cameo in it -- to help make those scenes look somewhat plausible. But Robson points out that full realism was never a likely prospect.

"You're never going to have an actress who can hit the ball like Aryna Sabalenka," she said. "It would be weird if that was the case."

Creative directing of those scenes, such as shots from the perspective of a moving ball, help sidestep that issue in the film. More importantly, as Gauff and Robson agree, "Challengers" is convincing on an emotional level in terms of how the pressures of professional sport drive its characters.

"I'm not Tashi Duncan," Gauff said with a laugh, referring to Zendaya's character -- a former junior champion, hungry to win at all costs, who becomes Art's wife and manager when injury cuts her career short. "And I don't know any Tashi Duncans. But I did relate to her mentality on the court. Also there's a part of the movie -- I told my boyfriend, 'Thank God you don't play tennis.' Because she's right, I would not want to date a scrub on tour."

Oh hey, @Zendaya 👋 The @challengersmov star arrives at Indian Wells with @TomHolland1996 ! pic.twitter.com/ZUvThBskWO — wta (@WTA) March 17, 2024

Gauff may not know any specific Tashi Duncans, but as former player, Andrea Petkovic pointed out in a recent Guardian article , "the three main characters are very specific tennis archetypes." The slumping major winner whose enthusiasm for the sport is waning. The lower-ranked player from a monied background whose talent isn't matched by hunger to win; the injured junior star who channels her frustration into her relationships, both with the sport and with her lovers.

Robson, who has interviewed the cast, says that they took inspiration from specific professionals.

"Patrick was inspired by Nick Kyrgios a bit, with the attitude on court," she said. "Josh O'Connor was saying he took inspiration from reactions after points, throwing racquets and stuff. When I was watching it, I thought Art was an Andre Agassi prototype -- someone who was very good and had done all the right things, but didn't necessarily want to be there all the time and wasn't a huge fan of the sport."

Even more relevant is Robson's own career. The Wimbledon junior champion in 2008 at the age of 14, she reached a career high of No.27 in 2013 but was forced to retire in 2018 after battling wrist and hip problems.

"When they contacted me, they said, 'You have so many similarities -- you also had a career-ending injury,'" she said, groaning. "I was like, 'Oh, great.'"

Like Gauff, Robson distances herself from Tashi Duncan, whom she describes as "not likeable at all." But she acknowledges that there are parallels. Tashi, who Robson has continued to work in tennis, has thrown herself into multiple roles. As well as her player relations job, she's a successful commentator and tournament director (of Nottingham). And that is a point where the Tashi character resonates with her.

"I want to be great at everything I do," Robson said with sudden firmness. "Playing tennis professionally, you learn how to work really hard, because you don't have much of a choice. You learn how to make things happen for you, because it is such an individual sport. You have your team, but it's still you that it revolves around, and if you're not pushing yourself, no one can do that for you."

Those are lines that could have been spoken by Tashi Duncan herself.
