Missing Tobago oil spill vessel resurfaces: where, how and what happens now?

Trinidad and Tobago authorities are pursuing the Solo Creed, now seized by the Angolan Navy for breaching offshore oil perimeters.

After months of anger and outcry over an oil spill which inflicted $23m in damage on Tobago’s shores, the Trinidad and Tobago government says it is pursuing the Solo Creed tugboat, now seized by the Angolan Navy.

In February, the Gulfstream tanker (pulled by Solo Creed ) capsized and then spilt oil across approximately 88km of Tobagonian coral reefs, beaches and other “eco-sensitive areas”.

The Solo Creed then sailed from Panama to a location offshore from a Venezuelan port operated by Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), where it then went ‘dark’ by turning off its Automated Identification System (AIS) location transponder.

There had been no sign of the vessel since – until Angolan authorities seized it on 11 May for violating oil security perimeters.

Without authorisation, the tugboat allegedly breached oil extraction blocks 17 and 18, exclusive zones operated by subsidiaries of TotalEnergies and BP , according to the companies’ websites.

While the Gulfstream remains off-grid, a recent investigation by Bellingcat and the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian verified that the Solo Creed has recently been just offshore of Luanda, Angola’s capital.

Angolan Navy commander Divaldo Fonseca said the Solo Creed’ s crew claimed they had intended to resupply at Luanda. None of the nine crew members (four Nigerians, two Panamanians, two Hondurans and a Venezuelan) raised any flags or sought authorisation as the tugboat circulated the oil security perimeters.

Who owns the Gulfstream and Solo Creed ?

Last week, Trinidad and Tobago’s Energy Ministry reaffirmed the country's urgent pursuit of the Solo Creed , saying it will use “ all resources at its disposal to attempt to find those responsible for the oil spill in Tobago”.

Officials from both Trinidad and Tobago and Angola are now in discussion over the next moves, but both countries are likely to be interested in the involvement of the Melaj Offshore Corporation.

Melaj, a Panamanian company which often transports Venezuelan oil, is linked to the Tobago spill through Melissa Rona Gonzalez, a senior figure within the corporation.

Public data from Panama’s corporate registry shows Gonzalez is an officer at Melaj , while Bellingcat revealed Gonzalez was the listed owner of the Solo Creed during the incident in February. The last known photograph of the Solo Creed was uploaded to satellite maritime platform MarineTraffic in December by the user ‘Melaj Offshore Corp’.

hospitality & tourism jobs in trinidad and tobago

Melaj has previously come under fire for chartering tankers to transport PDVSA’s sanctioned Venezuelan oil. Melaj loaded multiple oil cargoes after US sanctions were announced in 2019, Reuters reported.

Identifying the owner of the Gulfstream has so far not been possible, as the tanker appears not to have an International Maritime Organisation (IMO) registration number.

Nonetheless, authorities in Trinidad and Tobago are under immense pressure to find the culpable parties. The Caribbean nation has suffered more than its fair share of oil-related environmental disasters, notably the 1979 oil spill, the fifth- l argest on record .

Some 44 years on, and Trinidad and Tobago’s citizens and energy ministry officials alike are desperate to put to bed this latest disaster and bring those responsible to justice.

'First-of-its-kind' cricket stadium in New York hosts its first match: See photos

hospitality & tourism jobs in trinidad and tobago

New York's brand new modular cricket stadium , constructed specially for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 , is pitch perfect and shining.

The Nassau County Cricket Stadium on Long Island, New York hosted its first official match of the tournament Monday between 2014 champions Sri Lanka and South Africa. South Africa won the match by 6 wickets.

India and Bangladesh had inaugurated the stadium over the weekend with a warm-up match Saturday, which India won by 60 runs.

The stadium will also host the hotly anticipated clash between Pakistan and India on June 9.

Earlier in May, the ICC and Nassau County officials had commemorated the completion of the stadium with Olympic gold medalist and tournament ambassador Usain Bolt, members of the U.S. cricket team, cricket legends and New York sports stars.

Among those present at the unveiling of the stadium were U.S. cricketers Corey Anderson and Monank Patel , West Indies legend Sir Curtly Ambrose, Pakistan's Shoaib Malik and England’s Liam Plunkett. New York sports stars John Starks (NBA/New York Knicks), Elena Delle Donne (WNBA/USA), Bartolo Colon (MLB/New York Yankees-Mets), Victor Cruz (NFL/New York Giants) and Ibtihaj Muhammad (Fencing/USA) were also present at the occasion.

"To commemorate the milestone, all the special guests signed a giant cricket bat, which will remain at the venue for the eight matches being hosted at the event from June 3 - 12," ICC had said in a statement.

Largest ever cricket stadium in the U.S.

Construction on the stadium began in January and took about 4 months to complete. The stadium features general admission stands on the east and west sides "which rise to more than 20 meters, and include views of the Manhattan skyline," according to ICC. There are hospitality and media pavilions on the north and south ends. The north pavilion also features Cabana seats along with the Corner Club seats with a private party area.

"The world class 34,000-seater temporary stadium is the first-of-its-kind for international cricket and believed to be the largest ever constructed in the United States," the ICC said.

'We can’t wait': Timelapse video shows New York cricket stadium inching closer to completion

Four drop-in pitches, nurtured for the event in Florida, were transported over a 1,000-miles to New York, where they were installed by a crane into the venue, as per the ICC.

“The new stadium is going to be a fantastic place to watch from," Olympic gold medalist and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Ambassador Bolt had said in a statement. "It’s very enclosed and you feel very close to the action. I can imagine it will be full of energy.”

Nassau County Cricket Stadium match schedule

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium will host the following matches:

  • June 3: Sri Lanka vs. South Africa
  • June 5: India vs. Ireland
  • June 7: Netherlands vs. South Africa
  • June 9: India vs. Pakistan
  • June 10: South Africa vs. Bangladesh
  • June 11: Pakistan vs. Canada
  • J une 12: USA vs. India

How to get tickets to 2024 T20 World Cup

General tickets for the 2024 T20 World Cup are available to purchase on a first-come-first-serve basis on the  tournament website . While tickets for popular matches sold out almost immediately when the sales went live on Feb. 22, tickets for multiple matches in the U.S. are still available.

Tickets for some of the sold-out matches are also available for purchase on third-party websites such as  Stubhub , Tickets Center and  SeatGeek  for varying prices.

What to know about the 2024 T20 World Cup

The 9th edition of the T20 World Cup began on June 1 with a thrilling match between debutants Canada and the U.S., which was won by the U.S. Fifty-five matches will be played across nine cities – three in the U.S. and six in the Caribbean – according to the ICC. While the opening match was in Texas, the grand finale will be played on June 29 in Barbados. The semi-final and qualifier matches will take place in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana in the Caribbean.

Cricket in America: Why the 2024 T20 World Cup could be a 'milestone for the sport'

England enters the year as defending champions, having beaten Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup final in Melbourne.

CEO of the International Cricket Council Geoff Allardice, in an interview with USA TODAY , said the opportunity to bring one of the cricket council's "showcase events to the U.S. for the first time is a milestone for the sport of cricket."

"To be able to bring some of the biggest teams and the biggest matches to one of the biggest cities in the world and in the country with the biggest sports following and sports market in the world, I think, is a great opportunity for our sport," Allardice said.

Jamaica's Minister of Tourism:

'All tourism jobs not low paying'

Sandals and Beaches Resorts executive chairman, Adam Stewart, left, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett and Minister of Tourism and Ports for the Cayman Islands and chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) Kenneth Bryan during a panel discussion at last month’s Caribbean Hotel and Tourist Association’s Travel Marketplace, at Montego Bay Convention Centre, Jamaica.

ANDREA PEREZ-SOBERS

Andrea Perez-Sobers

Senior Reporter

an[email protected]

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett has dispelled the notion by some that all tourism jobs are low-paying.

Bartlett made this point during a panel discussion titled Integrated Tourism Development of Caribbean Hotel and Tourist Association’s Travel Marketplace, which was held last month at Montego Bay Convention Centre, Jamaica.

He indicated that his ministry has put training programmes in place that will provide workers with the qualifications needed to command higher salaries.

“The purpose of enabling us to change the labour market arrangements in tourism is that it is regarded as a low-wage industry with itinerants. The workers have not had a sense of commitment to a professional path because they don’t see it as existing in tourism. But that’s the tourism of the past — and we in the Caribbean know this,” Bartlett outlined.

“We are no longer a tourism of seasonality—six months off and six months on. We are now 24/7 so we have to create and train people to serve, and to do well, and to add value every step of the way 24/7,” he added.

Speaking on the value the tourism product brings to a country, the minister said that while capitalism was the driving force behind economic prosperity, workers were key assets to growing the industry.

“Tourism is about people, and it is the people who are the driving force behind the energy of tourism, and therefore the number one concern of tourism must be the workers of the tourism industry,” he highlighted.

Bartlett emphasised that it was not the responsibility of either the public or private sector alone to ensure a good working environment in the tourism sector.

He said, “It’s a joint responsibility that we all must share in enabling the best labour environment to prevail, which will inure to high productivity, great performances, and most importantly, the excellence of service, which will be the hallmark of the experience that the visitor comes to our destination for.”

The minister pointed out that 60 per cent of the value of the visitor experience was service, and the environment must be provided for the people to grow and thrive.

Also giving his input on the panel was Sandals and Beaches Resorts executive chairman, Adam Stewart, who said the tourism industry in the region is sophisticated and complicated.

Stewart mentioned that “it is something that you cannot take a lot of chances with and it’s something that needs deep experience around it.”

Further, he stated that there was a need for cohesion and continued dialogue between regional public and private sector players to effectively address key issues.

“I think our problems are relatively straightforward to solve, none of it is rocket science, but we have to start in a position of understanding each other’s limitations: what are the government’s limitations, what can or cannot be done; what are the private sector’s limitations?” Stewart explained.

He said both sectors must be able to hold hands, put in the infrastructure that will develop tourism, and create wealth for economies and the people.

Minister of Tourism and Ports for the Cayman Islands and Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), Kenneth Bryan, the third panelist spoke about the importance of technology such as artificial intelligence to integrated tourism development, stating that it was inevitable.

“It’s time for us to embrace it and try to figure out how to take advantage of it.”

He added that technology would allow for more efficiency in the future and the transfer of labour into other areas.
