Review: ‘Hotel California’ and more from Eagles at Wells Fargo Center

Three hours of the band's 1976 album, plus greatest hits, with Vince Gill taking the place of the late Glenn Frey.

E-A-G-L-E-S … Eagles!

No, not those Eagles. The Eagles that took flight at the sports complex in South Philadelphia on Monday night were the 1970s Southern California rock band Eagles — the group originally led by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. They are the only act in pop music history to count two of their albums on the list of the 10 best sellers of all time.

One of those is Hotel California , the 1976 release about decadence and burnout and the American dream coming to a dead end in the nation’s bicentennial year in cocaine-fueled life-in-the-fast-lane Los Angeles.

That’s the one with the 6 1/2-minute title song with “warm smell of colitas rising up in the air” and an epic guitar coda that’s been a de rigueur aspiration for countless cover bands for nearly a half century.

Not to mention the Henley-sung final line that should have served as a warning to the band and every other showbiz lifer pretending to step off the stage once and for all: “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

Thus it was Hotel California that had brought Eagles back to life and found the band at an all-but-sold-out Wells Fargo Center on Monday. There they played the album in order in its entirety, followed by nearly two hours of greatest hits, including every cut on Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) , the one even-bigger selling Eagles album.

So at this late date — 42 years after they first called it quits — who are the Eagles?

At the Wells Fargo, the core group was drummer and singer Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh, and longtime bassist Timothy B. Schmit, plus Vince Gill, the country singer-guitarist who’s taken Frey’s position at stage right and is a most welcome addition.

Introduced by Henley as “one of America’s finest singer-songwriters,” Gill took his first star with honeyed tenor voice on “New Kid in Town.”

That was apt since, at 64, he’s approximately a decade younger than the other principals in the band. He sparkled vocally on that Hotel cut, as he did later in the evening on “Take It Easy” and “Take It To the Limit.” And when called upon, Gill showed what an underrated guitar player he is, as he did on the 1970 James Gang hit “Funk #49” in which he squared off with Walsh, who added silliness and slide guitar firepower throughout the evening.

In addition to Gill, the band on Monday was also joined by auxiliary players, including Steuart Smith, their longtime touring guitarist who replaced Don Felder in 2001, and who teamed with Walsh on the aforementioned Hotel California coda.

On select songs, the band was joined by even more musicians. For Hotel’s “Wasted Time” and its instrumental reprise, three dozen string players, whom Henley called “the Northeast Corridor Orchestra,” appeared.

(If you added up all the masks on the back of the stage, it might have totaled more than those worn by all audience members.)

And on Hotel’s elegiac “The Last Resort,” the band and orchestra members were joined by the yellow-robed, 21-member University of the Arts Chorus, which helped give the album closer its aimed-for air of broken dream significance.

For a band with so many millions of fans whose songs’ chief characteristic is their pleasantness, Eagles have never had a shortage of detractors. For some it’s the music’s peaceful, easy, anodyne quality.

For me, it’s that combined with the casual misogyny that courses through their catalog, particularly the greatest-hits portion. So many witchy women who can’t hide their “Lyin’ Eyes,” and wounded male narrators who know all too well “what a woman will do to your soul.”

If there are seven women on the mind of an Eagle — as in “Take It Easy,” written by Frey and Jackson Browne — he counts himself lucky if one wants to be his friend.

Of course, all of those songs are expertly crafted and forever memorable, and for rock fans of a certain age, likely to be burned in your brain, even if you haven’t played an Eagles album in decades.

On Monday, they were performed with verve and precision in a first-class production that only occasionally dragged. Harmonies were sharp and highlights abounded, whether it was a stomping “Heartache Tonight,” with Gill taking the lead, or Walsh’s discordant “Rocky Mountain Way,” or Schmit’s delicate “I Can’t Tell You Why,” a yacht rock masterpiece unlike any of the band’s other signature songs.

Early in the evening, Henley, whose always slightly raspy vocals were strong and expressive all night long, said that the band hoped to bring the audience “a three-hour vacation from all the chaos and discord going on out there.” By those standards, even Eagles haters would have to admit the Hotel California tour succeeded.

Eagles Announce ‘Hotel California’ 2022 Tour With Orchestra, Choir

Eagles  have announced an eight-show  Hotel California  2022 tour that will see the band perform the third-best-selling U.S. album in history front-to-back at each stop with an accompanying orchestra and choir. Additionally, the run of Southeast shows will feature a second “Greatest Hits” set.

Surviving Eagles members  Don Henley ,  Joe Walsh , and Timothy B. Schmit  along with Deacon Frey and Vince Gill  will begin the tour on February 19th in Savannah, GA. The tour then travels to neighboring North Carolina for a stop in Charlotte (2/21) before a run of Florida shows with stops in Orlando (2/24), Ft. Lauderdale (2/25), and Tampa (2/28). The Hotel California  tour then doubles back to Raleigh, NC (3/2); and Atlanta, GA (3/4); before wrapping in Austin, TX (5/19).

Back in 2019, the Eagles performed three  Hotel California concerts in Las Vegas to widespread acclaim. Since then, the band has played the album over 30 times in 15 cities across the U.S., with a fall tour that just wrapped last month. These shows will see the remaining band members revisit songs they hadn’t performed live since the initial album tour back in 1976. Following a complete run through the album, there will be a short intermission followed by a “Greatest Hits” set.

The Eagles take Nashville to 'Hotel California' with a marathon rock concert

A note wasn't played Thursday night inside Bridgestone Arena until the album began spinning — literally. 

Before one cymbal splash or the strum of a guitar, a silent, stoic figure wearing head-to-toe black stepped on stage in downtown Nashville and pulled out an LP from under his arm. Holding up an album sleeve sun-soaked artwork accented by blue neon words, he slipped out a vinyl record to roaring applause. He laid the album on a turntable situated to one side of the stage and dropped the needle. 

A few spins after completing this nostalgic ritual and The Eagles appeared from behind a curtain to play the opening notes to the band's ultimate contribution to rock music canon: "Hotel California." 

As if the grooves on the 45-year-old album popped to life inside Bridgestone Arena, the band — featuring longtime members Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Joe Walsh and adopted country great Vince Gill — proceeded to perform "Hotel California" in its entirety. 

And at a three-hour runtime, the nine-song "Hotel California" performance proved only one part of a show that took audiences through a steamrolling set of Eagles, Walsh and Henley hits penned before and after the 1975 album. 

"Glad to be back here in Nash-Vegas," Henley said with a small smile. "Our mission this evening is to give you about a three-hour vacation from all the chaos and turmoil that's going on in the world."

A Nashville stay at 'Hotel California' 

If Thursday night was about checking into "Hotel California," then Nashville deserves a corner suite. 

Under a glowing blue sign that spelled the album's title, Nashville artists took center stage during the "Hotel" performance. The Eagles enlisted Fisk Jubilee Singers for a rousing rendition of album closer "The Last Resort," and alongside Country Music Hall of Fame band member Gill, Music Row conductor Jim Ed Norman joined the band on stage to lead a live orchestra during album string arrangements. 

And hearing "Hotel California" in-full on stage — including layers added by the orchestra and choir — proved a theatrical, reinvigorating way to revisit a collection of rock songs shared by generations of fans. 

Local love for Vince Gill 

After checking out of the album set (pun intended), the band traded vinyl spins for a preverbal mixtape spanning the country-rock days pre-dating "Hotel California" and the smooth rock that followed. 

Gill sang many of the hits previously carried by band co-founder Glenn Frey, who died in 2016. Beginning in 2017, Gill and Frey's son Deacon Frey took up live duties for the late member until earlier this year, when the second generation Eagles member exited the band.

Thursday night in Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry member led a handful of fan-favorite singalongs, from "Take It Easy" to "Heartache Tonight" and "Take It To The Limit." 

"We're delighted to have your hometown man up here with us this evening," Henley said, introducing Gill to an extended ovation that left the latter bowing multiple times in appreciation. "It's a real treat for us to have him in the band and [to] make music with Vince. One of America's finest." 

The hits roll on 

After wrapping "Hotel California," Henley said he and the band would return to "play everything else we know" — and he made  pretty  good on that promise. 

The Eagles didn't cut corners on what fans expect from a night with the long-running arena outfit. Walsh ripped up takes on "Life's Been Good," his ode to goofy self-awareness, and "Funk #49," the crowd-pleasing James Gang cut that pre-dates The Eagles. Schmit offered his soft-rock staple "I Can't Tell You Why" and Henley kept the audience singing with "Witchy Woman," "One Of These Nights" and "Desperado," to name a few. 

The set ended with a four-song encore, including one more trip to Walsh's catalog — "Rocky Mountain Way" — and Henley's foremost solo song, "Boys Of Summer." 

Closing with "The Best Of My Love," the band didn't put the needle down on its last song before dedicating the rendition to Glenn Frey and Taylor Hawkins, the late Foo Fighters drummer and friend of band, Henley said. 

"In three or four days, this band marks its 50th anniversary," Henley said. "'Take It Easy' was released on May 1, 1972. It's been a hell of a ride and we appreciate you sticking with us."

Eagles Announce Spring 2022 Tour Dates Playing ‘Hotel California’ in Full

The Eagles have announced an extended slate of concerts for their upcoming spring tour across the United States, where the rock legends will perform their influential 1976 album Hotel California in its entirety, along with an additional set of greatest hits.

And not only will the landmark Eagles album be played in full, it will also be bolstered by an orchestra and 22-piece choir joining the group onstage at each show. The tour leg kicks off on March 17 in Cleveland and covers the country over the next three months. Several 2022 Hotel California dates were announced last year ; more concerts were added just this week.

Surviving Eagles members Don Henley , Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit will join country icon Vince Gill and the late  Glenn Frey 's son, Deacon Frey, for the concerts. Gill and Deacon joined the band after Glenn's death in 2016, splitting his duties across various Eagles hits.

The Eagles originally announced the Hotel California  tour for 2020 after playing a Las Vegas residency devoted to the album in 2019. They did initial shows through February 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to reschedule most dates .

Hotel California contains the Eagles' signature hit of the same name, of course, in addition to the singles "New Kid in Town," "Life in the Fast Lane" and deep cuts such as "Victim of Love" and "Try and Love Again."

Eagles Add Six More ‘Hotel California’ 2022 US Tour Dates

Eagles have announced another brief U.S. leg of their Hotel California Tour  for November.

The six-date trek kicks off on Nov. 15 in St. Louis and concludes on Nov. 25 in Fort Worth, Texas. You can see the complete list of dates below. Tickets for the new shows go on sale on Aug. 19. Ticketing and tour information is available on the band's website .

As with previous legs of the  Hotel California Tour, the upcoming shows will feature a performance of the classic 1976 album in its entirety, accompanied by an orchestra and choir, followed by an additional greatest hits set.

Eagles launched the  Hotel California Tour in 2019, halting in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and picking it back up in August 2021. In April, the band announced the departure of Deacon Frey , son of late co-founder Glenn Frey . The younger Frey joined the band on the road in 2017, one year after the death of his father. He also joined Eagles as a special guest for two concerts back in June.

"In the wake of his dad's demise, Deacon, at age 24, did an extraordinary thing by stepping from relative anonymity into the very public world of his father's long illustrious career," the band said in a statement at the time. "We are grateful to Deacon for his admirable efforts and we wish him well as he charts his future. Deacon's Eagles family will always be here to surround him with love, support and goodwill, and he is always welcome to join us onstage at any future concerts if he so desires. We hope our fans will join us in wishing Deacon the very best as he moves into the next phase of his career."

The Eagles Extend “Hotel California Tour” with New 2022 Dates

Each concert features a full performance of the classic 1976 album

The Eagles have extended their “Hotel California Tour” with a new leg of US dates taking place through May 2022.

The tour, which originally kicked off in 2020, features the lineup of Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit alongside Deacon Frey and Vince Gill playing 1976’s Hotel California in full. Each date promises a performance of the album with the accompaniment of an orchestra and choir, followed by a second set of greatest hits.

The legendary band, Eagle,s has announced a set of upcoming tour dates for 2022 that the group is calling its “Hotel California” 2022 Tour.

The new dates are a continuation of the shows the band played earlier this year on its “Hotel California” 2021 series .

Fans will be treated to a plethora of hits from the Grammy Award-winning, Los Angeles-born band, which will be comprised of frontman Don Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, singer and guitar player Vince Gill, and vocalist Deacon Frey, son of former Eagles singer Glenn Frey.

Tickets go on sale December 3. In total, the band now has eight U.S. dates and five more in Europe. And the group announced the upcoming shows on Facebook , writing:

“Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, with Deacon Frey and Vince Gill –announce the band’s ‘Hotel California’ 2022 Tour. Concerts have been set in Savannah, GA; Charlotte, NC; Orlando. FL; Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Tampa, FL; Raleigh, NC; Atlanta, GA; and Austin, TX. Each show will feature ‘Hotel California,’ played from beginning to end, accompanied by an orchestra and choir, along with an additional set of the band’s greatest hits.

“Tickets go on sale Friday, December 3, at 10 AM local time. A variety of presales are available starting Thursday, December 2nd. Check Eagles.com for complete tour and ticket information. The Eagles had previously announced dates overseas, beginning in the Netherlands on June 17 and wrapping in London’s New Hyde Park on June 26, 2022. The band will be joined by an opening act (so to speak) of Hall of Famer Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on the June 26 gig in London.

The  Hotel California  tour came about after the Eagles performed three sold-out  Hotel California  gigs in Las Vegas last year. The show features a full-album performance of the supergroup’s 1976 classic, with the Eagles playing alongside an orchestra and a choir, as well as a second set of the band’s greatest hits.

The Eagles, who are known as one of the best selling bands of all time, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. The band, which released its self-titled debut album in 1972, is sure to have many fans staying at the proverbial hotel. Check out the live concert footage below.

The Eagles ’ Hotel California 2022 Tour has been newly augmented with shows in 12 more cities. The itinerary starts in Savannah, GA on February 19.

The new dates are in Cleveland, Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Columbus, Buffalo and Belmont State (both in New York state), Nashville, Tulsa, and Salt Lake City, where the tour ends on May 25. Tickets for all of the latest additions are on sale on January 14.

The group first performed  Hotel California  in its entirety, with a further set of hits, in three Las Vegas shows at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in September and October 2019. They then announced a tour of the same structure to begin in early 2020, before the pandemic forced them to reschedule most of the shows.

Welcome to the Hotel California.

Last night, legendary rockers the Eagles took the stage at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The performance was part of their on-going Hotel California Tour, a trek celebrating their seminal smash-hit album. The band played an incredible 3-hour set that included essentially everything an Eagles fan can dream of.

As the arena went dark, a blue neon sign emblazoned with “Hotel California” from the iconic album cover slowly descended from the rafters. Then, a hotel bellhop slowly sauntered across the stage and held up a vinyl of the masterpiece for which the tour is named. He took out the record, blew the dust off, and when the needle dropped – the curtain rose.

While it may have been subtle, the additional theatrics really set the tone for the show that was about to come.

The capacity crowd immediately got on their feet as the first few notes of Hotel California ‘s title track rolled off of guitarist Joe Walsh’s fingertips. The energy in the arena was palpable. The fans knew they were in for a night in the fast lane.

They rolled through their seminal LP front to back, treating fans to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A full orchestra and choir accompanied the band, which helped realize the album’s complete potential in a live setting. The crowd was on their feet for the entire opening number “Hotel California,” and rightfully so. Vince Gill took over vocal duties for the GRAMMY® Award-winning single “New Kid In Town.”

Then, Don Henley stepped out from behind the drum kit as Joe Walsh ripped into the opening riff of the rocker “Live In The Fast Lane. The crowd jumped up out of their chairs and sang along with Henley to one of rock music’s biggest anthems. It was a highlight of the show, for sure, and the Eagles had barely started their engine.

Noteworthy moments from the album play-through included “Wasted Time” with the North East Corridor Orchestra for the Reprise, the foot-stomping rocker “Victim of Love,” and more. The final track of the set saw the band join forces with the orchestra once again plus the University of the Arts Chorus. It made for perhaps the fullest version of the song that fans had ever heard.

The set was the kind of celebration an album of this caliber deserves.

After a short break, the Eagles returned to the stage for Act II. The kicked things off with “Seven Bridges Road.” The proceeded to roll through a greatest hits set, dropping one fan favorite after the other. The even extended themselves beyond the Eagles discography. They performed Joe Walsh’s “In The City” and “Life’s Been Good,” plus a cover of the James Gang’s “Funk #49” (of which Walsh was a member).

Other highlights included “Take It Easy,” “One of These Nights,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Witchy Woman,” “Lyin’ Eyes, “Heartache Tonight,” and many more.

Although they were already 23 tracks in, the Eagles returned to the stage for a four-song encore. They began the end with another Joe Walsh hit “Rocky Mountain Way.” The elegant “Desperado” followed, then Don Henley’s nostalgic solo hit “The Boys of Summer.” They gently closed out the unforgettable evening with “Best of my Love.”

Hotel California  is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum by the RIAA. After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and won two GRAMMY® Awards for “New Kid in Town” and “Hotel California.” Several of the songs from the album have not been performed since the original Hotel California tour.  The band’s  Their Greatest Hits 1971-1977  is the best-selling U.S. album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum. 

In today’s faddish, fractured rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons. As the best-selling American band of the ’70s, and one of the top-selling acts of all time, the Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums and topped the singles charts five times. They have won six GRAMMY® Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

Formed in Los Angeles back in 1971, The Eagles has five number-one singles and six number-one albums. The also won six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards.
