Muse review – sublimely ridiculous rock’n’roll camp

Groupama Stadium, Lyon With pyrotechnics that might tire a pyromaniac and a giant blow-up Satan the Devonian stadium-fillers have lost none of their thrilling pomp

H alfway through Muse’s set, probably the daftest thing that Groupama Stadium has ever seen happens. Frontman Matt Bellamy is wearing shimmering silver while perched at a light-up piano and playing booming horror cliche Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach. Then his band break into You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween, replete with a three-storey-tall masked, hooded face behind them, the video screen inside it alternating between Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and other scary movie villains. It’s the most high-budget display of rock’n’roll camp – yet the night will get madder from here.

Outside this near-60,000 crowd, Muse aren’t necessarily the coolest band in the world any more. It was as early as 2007 that the Devon trio ascended to this grandiose level: after megahits from Supermassive Black Hole to Starlight meshed pop-rock drama with calls for revolution just vague enough that both the left and right could rally behind them, they became the first band to sell out the new Wembley Stadium. Since then though, hit-and-miss albums such as last year’s Will of the People have dented what was previously a bulletproof reputation for top-notch anthem-making.

Fortunately, from 2007 to 2023, one thing remains consistent: Muse gigs revel in the sublimely ridiculous. Following You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween’s spooky pomp, Bellamy introduces Uprising by playing its synth melody on a Nintendo Power Glove attached to a suit coated in LEDs. We Are Fucking Fucked has its juvenile title complemented by the kind of production a 10-year-old on a sugar rush would mastermind: fire spews from the stage so frequently that it would overstimulate a pyromaniac. Then, finally, the encore of Kill Or Be Killed and Knights of Cydonia is backed by a blow-up bust of Satan so massive that its arms extend beyond the stadium stage.

Sixteen years deep into filling football fields, Muse understand the assignment more than almost every other rock band. More is more and, even after feeding Lyon two hours of overblown theatre, they achieve the meteoric feat of making a 25-song extravaganza feel too short.

One of the band's most popular songs, Uprising has been a live staple ever since its debut in 2009. During The Resistance Tour it was often proceeded by We Are The Universe , with this intro later being replaced by Isolated System or Unsustainable during The 2nd Law Tour and JFK for the Drones Festivals Tour 2015 . From the Drones World Tour ( November 2015 ) onwards, Matt doesn't play guitar until the bridge of the song - leaving the first verses and choruses to Morgan Nicholls / Dan Lancaster (with a few exceptions like the Top of the Mountain Festival in 2016, Paris by-request show in 2018 or James Beam Distillery in 2022). During the Simulation Theory World Tour (2019), the song was given an extended intro where Matt introduced all the members of the band - including Morgan. Performances during the Will of the People World Tour from 2022 and 2023 were also preceded by Behold, The Glove as an intro.

There exists very few concerts since 2009 that don't feature Uprising and the song was the highest played song out of every song performed from 2009-2011 and again from 2013-2014. The only concerts that don't feature the song often being either smaller-venue gigs or promotional performances. It looks certain the song will continue to be performed at virtually every show for years to come.

The first song Muse leaked from its upcoming album “Resistance” was the Queen-emulating “United States of Eurasia,” but it’s now clear that “Uprising” will be the lead single. The song’s persistent bass and driving snare, synched to cries of “Oi!,” give it a collectivist stadium-chant vibe. That said, it’s hard to imagine a song less likely to be sung at an actual protest. The hook is part Billy Idol’s “White Wedding,” part Blondie’s “Call Me,” while the chorus — “They will not force us/They will stop degrading us/They will not control us/We will be victorious” — is a nearly note-for-note quote of ABBA’s “Lay All Your Love on Me.” The track’s dense energy is likely to make it a dancefloor event, but intended or not, there’s a bit too much parody to take this “Uprising” completely seriously. –Evie Nagy
