MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 29, 2022) --  CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car point leader Carson Kvapil kept his No. 8 iRacing Chevrolet clean during Saturday night's Fluid Logic 225 at Virginia's Motor Mile Speedway, racing to a second-place finish and adding to his lead in series points. The 19-year-old driver earned his ninth top-four finish in 10 series races with the runner-up finish.

In practice, Kvapil worked to get the feel he wanted from his iRacing-backed Chevrolet, focusing on what he would have at the end of the 125-lapper on the .416-mile oval. The Chevrolet was good on the short run as well, as Kvapil earned his fifth pole of the season for the event.

When the event began, Kvapil concentrated on staying near the front and saving tires for the end. With 20 laps remaining, the young driver began to move toward the lead and crested in second place behind CARS Tour stalwart Deac McCaskill, who eventually earned the victory.

In the 10 CARS Tour races for far this season, Kvapil has two victories and nine top-five finishes. Those totals push his average finish in the series so far this season to a stellar 3.6 with five races remaining.

Next action for Kvapil, team manager Bryan Shaffer and the JR Motorsports Late Model team will be on Wednesday, when the CARS Tour LMSC division invades the revitalized North Wilkesboro Speedway for the Racetrack Revival event. Kvapil will race alongside team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the 125-lap feature.

Carson Kvapil, driver No. 8 iRacing Chevrolet team

"I thought the No. 8 iRacing Chevrolet was really fast all race long and we were able to bring home a hard-fought second-place finish. It was another great run that helped our points for the JR Motorsports team, a real solid night for us going into North Wilkesboro. Big thanks to iRacing and JR Motorsports for letting me drive this bad-fast No. 8 Chevrolet."

Cars tour crowning champions at north-south shootout, share this article.

cars tour points 2022

The Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour will crown two champions in the prestigious John Blewett III North-South Shootout at Caraway Speedway on Saturday afternoon.

Since 2003, Modified competitors from both the north and south have converged each year in the southeast to prove which region is superior. Now taking place at Caraway, both divisions of the CARS Tour were added to the North-South Shootout docket last year to determine their respective champions.

There is almost no doubt as to who will claim the CARS Late Model Stock Car and Pro Late Model Tour titles at Caraway. Defending LMSC Tour champion Carson Kvapil leads Brenden Queen by 19 points, while Caden Kvapil effectively locked up the PLM Tour title with a victory in the most recent event at Tri-County Motor Speedway.

Even though the championships are nearly settled, the North-South Shootout still presents one last opportunity for drivers to end the 2023 season with a victory and build momentum heading into a brief but busy winter.

Carson Kvapil on the verge of second straight LMSC Tour title

Ever since he became a full-time driver in the CARS LMSC Tour last year, Carson Kvapil has been the most dominant driver in the series.

Nine victories in two seasons have Kvapil on the precipice of earning his second consecutive LMSC Tour title in Saturday’s North-South Shootout at Caraway Speedway. Even though he does not have the championship wrapped up yet, Kvapil has every reason to believe Saturday will be as smooth as the previous 15 races in 2023.

“I’m a little nervous as anybody would be, but I’m pretty excited going into it,” Kvapil said. “We’ve also run pretty good at Caraway even when we weren’t that good. We haven’t dropped out of a single race this year, but we can’t put ourselves in a bad spot. Things are looking good, but we’re going to go contend for a win and let the points play out.”

Kvapil, who has yet to register a finish outside the Top 10 this year, admitted that 2023 has been far more challenging compared to his rookie season with how tough the competition currently is in the LMSC Tour.

Facing stiff competition that includes Brenden Queen, Bobby McCarty, Connor Hall and more, Kvapil managed to accomplish a personal goal of scoring more wins in 2023. He credits his efficiency to the strength of JR Motorsports along with his maturity away from the track when it comes to building relationships inside the team.

Fittingly, Kvapil and JR Motorsports are looking to take their second LMSC Tour at the same track where their stalwart dynamic began back in 2022 with Kvapil’s triumph in the Old North State Nationals. Kvapil knows Saturday will play out differently than that first victory but believes he will be in good shape with the right setup on his car.

A mistake-free afternoon at Caraway is the key for Kvapil to end his season with another victory while simultaneously celebrating a championship alongside his younger brother Caden, which would make them the first set of siblings to win CARS Tour titles in the same year.

“It’s a pretty big deal for [Caden] to win a title in the Pros,” Kvapil said. “That’s a very tough class every week with the Donnie Wilson and Anthony Campi cars. Those are some of the best cars out there, so him winning that championship is pretty cool. If I were to get it done on my end, that’d be even better.”

Against heavy odds, Brenden Queen optimistic heading into Caraway

Brenden Queen understands a lot of circumstances need to fall his way for him to have an opportunity at the CARS LMSC Tour title.

Entering the North-South Shootout with a 19-point deficit to Carson Kvapil, Queen is not heavily focused on the LMSC Tour championship picture but is confident he can close out his debut season with a fourth win on the 2023 season.

“I feel like I don’t really have any pressure on me,” Queen said. “I’m locked into second, so we’re just going to Caraway to do our job, which is to get a pole, lead all the laps and win the race. If the points fall in place, it’s meant to be, but if not, then hopefully we can still get out of there with a win.”

Queen has nearly matched Kvapil in every category this year. The two have combined to win eight of the 15 races on the 2023 LMSC Tour season, both have led over 500 laps and neither driver has recorded a DNF.

The key turning point in the championship occurred in the Old North State Nationals at Tri-County Motor Speedway, where Queen finished a lap down in 15 th after running out of fuel while leading. Kvapil finishing second that night has forced Queen to try and erase that deficit over the last four events, with only minimal results.

Although Queen wishes he could have Tri-County back, he still considers the 2023 season to be a resounding success. With Queen set to return to Lee Pulliam Performance next year, he is eager to finish off the LMSC Tour season finale on a positive note so he can build momentum towards a potential championship run.

“Lee Pulliam Performance is a top team in the CARS Tour,” Queen said. “You have to take us seriously. Everyone works hard and Lee is such a great leader. Bringing fast cars every week against JR Motorsports is something the Virginia boys can be proud of and if we can keep winning, that can only help us for next year.”

Caden Kvapil prepares to wrap up stellar 2023

There will be almost nothing for Caden Kvapil to worry about when the green flag waves for the North-South Shootout at Caraway Speedway on Saturday afternoon.

No one on the entry list stands in the way of Kvapil earning his first championship in the CARS PLM Tour. With two victories at Caraway on his resume, Kvapil is determined to add one more accomplishment on the year before hosting the PLM Tour championship trophy.

“It’s a big stress-reliever knowing I basically have [the championship],” Kvapil said. “There’s still the owner’s points title, but we have a good lead there too. Caraway is one of the better tracks for me and we pretty much led the whole race in June. I’m feeling really good about our chances going into this one.”

Moving into Highlands Motorsports’ backup car during the summer was the difference maker for Kvapil following an inconsistent start to the 2023 season.

After only two Top 5s in the first six races, Kvapil has nearly been unstoppable since taking home a checkered flag at Caraway in June. While behind the wheel of the Highlands Motorsports backup, Kvapil has only finished outside the Top 5 once, which came at Wake County Speedway due to a last lap crash while battling for the win.

For Kvapil, he has personally seen improvement with the way he provides feedback to his team. The effective communication Kvapil has shared with Highlands Motorsports has allowed him to find more of a comfort zone in the No. 96, which was crucial in securing the PLM Tour title before the North-South Shootout.

Outside of a fourth win on the year, the only thing that could make the end of 2023 even better for Kvapil would be to have his brother Carson join him as a CARS Tour champion.

“We both have good leads, but you never know what’s going to happen,” Kvapil said. “This is a pretty big piece of history, but it’s cool to see [Carson’s] success over the past few years with his championships in the Late Model Stocks and Supers. It would be cool to finally be up there with him with my own championship in the CARS Tour.”

There will be plenty more storylines to follow during the final race of the 2023 CARS Tour season.

Both Kvapil brothers are also in the running for the Keen Parts Challenge, a separate four-race championship shared between the two CARS Tour divisions that will pay $10,000 to the winner. Carson leads his brother Caden by just two points heading into the final race, but Brenden Queen remains within striking distance eight points behind.

Saturday will also see Kaden Honeycutt complete a marathon that includes four races in two days. After running the ARCA Menards Series West and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series finales at Phoenix Raceway on Friday, Honeycutt will take the long flight to North Carolina to run both the CARS LMSC and PLM Tour features.

The two CARS Tour races will make up the first half of the North-South Shootout. At 1 p.m. ET, the PLM Tour will run their 100-lap race before the LMSC Tour puts a bow on the 2023 season with a 125-lap feature. The 602 Modifieds and Tour Modifieds will follow the LMSC Tour event.

FloRacing will carry live coverage of all the on-track action.

CARS Tour Season Reaches Halfway Mark at Caraway

For the second and final time in the 2023 season, both divisions of the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour are set to do battle in the middle of the week.

Caraway Speedway will play host to this mid-week excursion for the series. Built in 1966, the facility has seen drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Harry Gant, Richie Evans, Sam Ard, Jimmy Hensley and many more take checkered flags during its history, but it has since become a staple of the CARS Tour in recent years.

Along with being the site of the famous North-South Shootout since 2020, which expanded to include the CARS Tour last year, Caraway was also the site for the series’ prestigious $30,000-to-win Old North State Nationals in 2022, which was won by defending LMSC Tour champion Carson Kvapil.

Wednesday’s CARS Tour 265 serves as the halfway point for both the LMSC and PLM Tour. The LMSC Tour championship battle grew tighter following a thrilling event at Dominion Raceway, but the PLM Tour title is far from secured with Caraway being one of several diverse tracks remaining on the schedule.

Layne Riggs making debut with Kevin Harvick Inc.

When Layne Riggs arrives at Caraway Speedway, he will not be in his family-owned No. 99 that he piloted to a NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series title last year.

Instead, Layne finds himself with a perfect chance to showcase his talent, as he is set to drive the No. 62 Late Model Stock prepared by Kevin Harvick and Rodney Childers on Wednesday night . Although the deal is currently for one race, Layne intends to make the most of his situation and help build up Kevin Harvick Incorporated’s program.

“I’m just super thankful to KHI for giving me the opportunity to be the first to drive their car besides Kevin,” Layne said. “It reminds me of Dale Jr. giving Josh Berry an opportunity to drive for him and that helped build JR Motorsports’ development program. I’m super honored I was chosen by KHI to do this.”

Layne considers his opportunity with KHI to be a full circle moment in many aspects. His father Scott briefly drove for DeLana Harvick’s dad John Paul Linville in the USAR Hooters Late Model Series, while Childers served as Scott’s crew chief in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2005 until 2007.

Those connections helped Layne obtain the No. 62 car for Caraway. After Harvick finished 11 th in the CARS LMSC Tour race at North Wilkesboro last month, he and Childers approached the Riggs family for advice on how to make their car more competitive against top-tier organizations like JR Motorsports and Chad Bryant Racing.

Regardless of Harvick and Childers’ long-term plans in Late Model Stocks, Layne hopes he can be a vital part of that foundation. With Harvick expected to be in attendance on Wednesday while Childers serves as crew chief, Layne understands the expectations placed upon him but is confident he can exceed them and pull off a victory.

“I’m feeling good,” Layne said. “We’re taking what Rodney knows, along with my experience in Late Models and meshing it together to do what we think is best to go out and win a race. Having the resources of KHI and being able to pull so much information, I have the world at my fingertips compared to my family team. It’s an endless well that I hope never quits giving.”

Amidst slump, Carson Kvapil returns to site of biggest win

Just over a year ago, Carson Kvapil captured the most prestigious win of his Late Model Stock career by taking home $30,000 in the prestigious Old North State Nationals at Caraway Speedway.

Kvapil utilized the momentum from that victory to take home the 2022 CARS LMSC Tour championship. He hopes another Caraway triumph on Wednesday will help him break out of a recent slump and extend his advantage in the point standings over Brenden Queen.

“We had pretty much a perfect car in last year’s [Old North State] Nationals,” Kvapil said. “We’re going back [to Caraway] with that same setup, but we’ll see what happens. Everything is changing all the time, but the season has been a good one for us. I thought we had a car to win at Dominion [Raceway] but it just didn’t work out.”

Kvapil found himself on the wrong end of a thrilling battle between himself, Queen, and Bobby McCarty at Dominion. He managed to pass Queen on a late restart, but could not keep his car on the bottom, which ultimately resulted in him finishing fourth after being unable to defend himself against Queen on the top side.

A three-race win streak earlier this year helped establish high expectations for Kvapil through the rest of 2023, so he assigns blame to himself for his recent dry streak. Kvapil said the main issue currently plaguing him is being unable to find a proper balance with his car, which he stressed cannot happen with the LMSC Tour field being so close on speed.

Despite this, Kvapil is not overly concerned about his current situation and anticipates a solid rebound at Caraway. The speed in Kvapil’s car has not wavered following his last win at Ace Speedway, so he knows wins are always realistic goals with JR Motorsports as long as he keeps learning and minimizes mistakes.

“All in all, it’s about being smart,” Kvapil said. “You can’t put yourself out of the race before it even ends. We’re looking forward to consistent finishes. I need to focus on my job at the racetrack and get the car right on race day. When we do that, we’ll have speed.”

Tristan McKee relishes being youngest CARS Tour winner

At just 12 years old, Tristan McKee has already found his way to victory lane in the CARS PLM Tour .

McKee had to outduel Ashton Higgins in the closing stages of the most recent PLM Tour event at Dillon Motor Speedway to reach that milestone, which he admitted was a pleasant surprise after initially entering the series with the goal of just gaining experience.

“We were very emotional,” McKee said. “I didn’t expect [a win] coming into the CARS Tour. I knew we had a pretty good car at Dillon on that Friday, and we didn’t make any adjustments with how hot it was. We pretty much rode the whole race until the last caution. Ashton and I had a pretty good battle, but I got the lead, and we ended up winning.”

McKee had experience in both Pro Late Models and Late Model Stocks before making his PLM Tour debut at Southern National Motorsports Park but knew he would encounter plenty of obstacles while trying to gain respect against his competition.

An overheating issue during the season-opener put McKee in an early hole. Following another poor outing at Ace Speedway, McKee began to find his comfort zone at North Wilkesboro Speedway with a strong fourth place run in a 40-car field, which he eventually parlayed into his first career victory.

The surge McKee has enjoyed over the past three races currently has him 37 points behind Katie Hettinger in the PLM Tour standings. Erasing that deficit will be a challenge for McKee, but he is optimistic the momentum from his Dillon win will continue into Wednesday’s race at Caraway Speedway.

“It’s been a while since I’ve raced [at Caraway],” McKee said. “There’s going to be some good cars there, so I know it’s going to be fun. I’m personally excited because I feel like we’re going to have a good piece.”

The two CARS Tour divisions will be accompanied by Caraway Speedway’s Bandolero and Legends classes on Wednesday evening. The green flag for the PLM Tour race will fly once the Legends event concludes, with the 125-lap LMSC Tour feature immediately following afterwards.

On-track action begins at 7 p.m. ET, with FloRacing providing the coverage.

In addition to being the inaugural zMAX CARS Tour winner at New River All American Speedway, Connor Hall has joined Barry Nelson at Nelson Motorsports for the 2024 season, driving the No. 22 Blue Ridge Color Toyota. Hall battled for the lead with eventual race winner Carson Kvapil over the closing laps of the season opener at Southern National Motorsports Park, falling just short at the checkered flag. After a bumpy end to the 2023 season, Hall has found confidence in the Nelson camp, finishing second in the Icebreaker 125 at Florence Motor Speedway and earning three victories in the inaugural Speed Weeks at Southern National. Heading to New River should be an additional boost for Hall, as the track layout resembles his home track, Langley Speedway in Virginia.

Ronnie Bassett Jr. Seeking Repeat Performance In 2024

Queen won the battle last season in a last-lap, last-corner duel with Ronnie Bassett Jr., and Bassett is looking to take one step up the podium this weekend. Bassett, who spent several weekends last season racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, got to the inside of Queen in Turn 3 on the final lap challenging for the win, but a slip in the middle of the corner cost him a chance at the victory and he finished third. The 28-year-old driver ran near the front for much of the event and began his charge with six laps to go and nearly took his family-owned Chevrolet to Victory Lane. Bassett’s experience racing at the national level in NASCAR’s second-highest category proved the notion that the short-track style of the zMAX CARS Tour is alive and well every weekend.

McCumbee Looks To Finish First After Strong Run At New River In 2023

Chad McCumbee led laps and ran in the top five most of the night last time out at New River All-American Speedway. In fact, that pretty much describes McCumbee’s approach: run fast, lead laps, contend for victory. Despite finishing seventh due to the late-race scuffle for positions, McCumbee is a threat at just about any venue on which the zMAX CARS Tour races. McCumbee won the Thunder Road Harley Davidson Pole Award at Southern National and was in the mix for the race win before a brake issue cut his day short. New River’s pavement resembles that at the now-defunct Myrtle Beach Speedway, and McCumbee earned his stripes on that legendary oval coming up through the ranks.

The green flag for the National Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram 250 zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour race is set to wave at 8:30 p.m. ET, with FloRacing providing coverage of LMSC qualifying beginning at 5 p.m. The racing program also includes Legend Cars and Bombers in addition to the125-lap zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Car feature. Both divisions’ feature races will take place following the conclusion of the Late Model Stock Car main and will be televised by FloRacing.
