Tented Safaris – What is it, When and Where Should I Go?

It may seem impossible to get away from work and the stresses of everyday life, but it is crucial to recharge and replenish yourself so that you can face life with more clarity and vigour than before, a camping African adventure can do this for you. There is something magical about pitching a tent or spending nights in a tent in the great outdoors.

What is a Tented Camp?

Basically, it is similar to camping by staying overnight in a tent; you spend your nights away from the hustle and bustle of city life and the concrete jungle – in a tranquil place where you can hear and see wildlife passing by or surrounding you. It is a magical experience.

While camping in Tanzania for instance is a great budget choice for people who want to be near to nature without sacrificing comfort, tented camps provide greater creature amenities for those who want to be close to nature without sacrificing too much comfort.

Tented camps, often known as ‘glamping,’ combine the best of camping with the best of staying in a luxurious resort.

Why Stay in a Tented Camp?

A tented camp is a good balance between roughing it in a conventional tent and living distant from nature in a brick and mortar resort for people who wish to enjoy the raw grandeur of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. It is an authentic experience.

Everything from a comfy bed to a private toilet to electrical outlets to charge your cameras is likely to be found beneath the canvas canopy of your tent.

Expectations in a Tented Camp?

One of my fondest safari experiences was sleeping in tented camps and the entire tenting experience. Coming back to your campsite, after a long day spent viewing the wild, where tents are set up already. Having a great meal prepared by the crew and enjoying the meal while sitting around the blazing campfire as the sun sets over the African savannah – and the best part hearing the sounds of lions roaring, birds chirping, hyenas giggling and the nocturnal wildlife coming out to play. Like a lullaby putting me to sleep.

Sleeping in a remote wilderness location, surrounded by nature while curled up on your bed or sleeping bag. These memories are simply priceless.

What are the types of Tents?

Depending on your budget, you can experience budget safari tented to luxurious tented camps.

Mobile Tented Accommodation

These are known to be seasonal and temporary camps, that provide a unique classic safari experience, they are frequently created for three month periods to follow for example the great wildebeest migration, putting you in prime game-watching spots.

Simple dome tents to opulent, classic safari tents are available for accommodation. En-suite facilities with bucket showers or also called ‘safari showers’ and toilets are provided in the tents. There are no permanent structures built and you basically stay in a remote location where there are no other people. When you leave the location, nothing is left behind. The crew bring all the necessary equipment and meals. The fabric of your tent will be the only thing standing between you and nature and the wild. Magical, right?

Mobile Tented Adventures are perfect for those who value having access to the best game viewing location sites; who also plan to spend the bulk of their time exploring the area and who prefer comfort above extra lodge frills.

Popular Mobile Tented Tour Options:

  • 7 Day Botswana Tented Safari (Fully Serviced)

Permanent Tented Camps

This ‘sleep under canvas’ set up is based upon fixed foundations at a fixed location with the amenities of a lodge. These Permanent tents are often set up on raised platforms with hardwood flooring and canvas walls. En-suite bathrooms include 24-hour running water for sinks, showers, and toilet flushing. The central lounge spaces are generally large, and many of them have swimming pools. Permanent ultra-luxury tented camps provide the ultimate luxury experience, with private plunge pools, butler service, and expansive living areas.

Only the canvas separates you from the wildlife which is a great Magical feeling! This tent experience is perfect for those who want to feel close to nature while enjoying a high level of comfort.

Popular Tented Safari Tour Options:

  • 5 Day Tanzania Tented Safari
  • 10 Day Best of Tanzania and Kenya Safari
  • 5 Day Masai Mara Tented Safari

Adventure Camping

This is your typical ‘roughing it out‘ basic camping setup: dome tents, cots or sleeping bags, and the minimum essentials. Sleeping arrangements include a sleeping bag or a comfortable mattress.

Electricity and Wi-Fi are unlikely to be available in campgrounds, and there will be shared bathroom and toilet facilities. You’ll have a genuine experience — falling asleep under the stars.

On these camping tours, the crew will prepare meals with the assistance of the travellers making it a self participation tour which is all part of the adventure experience.

Popular Camping Tour Options:

  • 20 Day Cape Town to Victoria Falls Tour
  • 40 Day Cape Town to Kenya Tour
  • 55 Day Cape Town to Kenya and Gorillas Tours

When is the Best time to go on a Tented Safari?

Because the East and Southern African regions have different wet and dry seasons, you may go on safari at any time of year if you’re willing to be flexible with your destination. The optimum time for safari is determined by a variety of things, in addition to your own calendar of when you can actually take time off to go on safari:

Destination: Is there a country on your travel list that you would like to explore?

Wildlife: Are you interested in Wildlife, any specific game?

Budget: In the dry (high) safari season implies more animals, more people, and high season rates. Going on safari during the rainy season, on the other hand, offers less expensive rates and it can hamper your wildlife experience to some extent. On scheduled group safaris, the rates remain the same throughout the year.

What is the difference between a campsite and a tent campsite?

A campsite is a location where people can camp including caravans or motorhomes. While a tent campsite, is only for tents to be pitched.

What is a Tented Safari

Combining the words Safari meaning ‘’an expedition to observe animals in their natural habitat’’ and Tented ‘’consisting of tents; providing accommodation in the form of tents’’. A Tented Safari is staying or sleeping under the canvas while staying in a location where you can very close to nature and wildlife.

History of Safari Tent Glamping

Safari tent glamping has its origins in the lavish hunting trips of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. To explore Africa’s untamed wilderness and hunt its unique species, wealthy British and American explorers embarked on opulent safaris that became the height of decadence and style. These early explorers carried an entourage of employees, including cooks, porters, and guides, as well as cutting-edge camping equipment and luxurious furnishings, laying the groundwork for the development of glamorous camping .

Lord Delamere, a British aristocrat who conducted multiple hunting trips in East Africa in the early 1900s, was a crucial factor in the creation of safari tent glamping. Lord Delamere’s lavish camps were noted for their Persian rugs, silverware, and even a full library. His lavish safaris drew the attention of other rich people who wished to replicate his manner and enjoy the African bush in luxury.

As the appeal of these opulent safaris rose, so did the desire for more comfortable and refined tented accommodations. Canvas tents have grown to include elevated timber floors, en-suite bathrooms, and huge verandas, giving visitors the ultimate in comfort while yet allowing them to immerse themselves in nature. These tented camps developed to provide additional facilities and services over time, such as gourmet dinners, spa treatments, and private game drives, elevating the camping experience even more.

History of Safari Tent Glamping

The notion of safari tent glamping quickly extended beyond Africa, with opulent tented lodges springing up in exotic locales all over the world. Nowadays, guests may enjoy an upmarket glamping experience in places as different as Australia’s Outback, Costa Rica’s rainforests, and Montana’s Rockies. Glamping has evolved in recent years, with eco-friendly and sustainable solutions gaining appeal among ecologically aware visitors.

Safari tent glamping’s long history and global reach have cemented its position as a premium travel experience, providing a unique combination of adventure, luxury, and cultural immersion that appeals to a diverse variety of tourists. There’s no doubting the pull of this fascinating travel trend, whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time glamper.

Before we dive into the top things to know about staying in tented safari camps, it’s important to note that every camp and experience is unique. What I’m about to share is based on my personal adventures and may not fully encompass the diverse range of safari camps out there. However, I hope that by sharing my own experience, I can give you a glimpse into the world of tented safari camps and help you prepare for your own incredible journey.

Types of Tented Safari Camps

The first thing to consider is what type of tented safari camp to choose. As you may imagine, there are varying levels of tented safari camps, ranging from basic camping to traditional tented safari camps to uber-luxury tented safari camps.

Camping : If you’re a budget-conscious traveler, basic camping is a great option. This is what people typically associate with traditional camping – think a small tent in the midst of the wilderness. While basic camping may lack the luxuries of other tented camps, it offers an immersive and authentic outdoor experience. You’ll be able to fully appreciate the sounds of nature, gaze at the star-filled sky, and bond with fellow campers. It’s a fantastic option for those seeking a closer connection with the wilderness while keeping costs in check. However, I am certainly not a camper so I steered clear of this option.

Tented Safari Camps : Tented safari camps can vary widely in amenities and range from basic (a step up from camping) to super luxurious. The differences are seen in the bathroom set up (shared vs. private), furnishings & décor, level of service, types of meals offered, etc. However, in general, you can think of tented safari camps as hotel rooms with canvas walls plopped down in the middle of an elephant’s habitat. We ended up leaning toward a more luxurious one because I was not down with shared bathrooms or cold showers. Even so, it was definitely a very rustic experience!

Mobile Migration Camp

You may have also heard the term mobile migration camp when looking into tented safari camps. Mobile migration camps in the Serengeti take glamping to a whole new level. These camps follow the footsteps of the Great Migration, ensuring you’re always at the front row of nature’s greatest spectacle. Just when you think the animals are done , the camp picks up and relocates, giving you a ringside seat for the next awe-inspiring act. In the Serengeti, the camps will typically be in the Southern Serengeti during the summer for calving season while in the winter the camps relocate to the Northern Serengeti to witness the Great Migration.

Inside a Tent

Tented camps may sound basic, but don’t let the canvas exterior fool you. These camps are designed to provide comfort and style. As you settle into your canvas abode, expect a blend of rustic charm and modern comforts. The spacious tents are thoughtfully furnished with comfortable beds, providing a cozy retreat after a day of safari adventures. You’ll have access to bathroom facilities (ours were private and located within our tent).

Wake up to the melodies of nature and step outside to witness the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife roaming freely nearby. In our case, we were located in the middle of the wildebeest migration. The tent had a screened-in porch complete with comfy chairs and tables so that you could enjoy a morning cup of tea while gazing out at the Serengeti.

Quick Tip: If you’re struggling to keep your luggage small to comply with bush plane regulations, check out these vacuum seal bags ! I’ve used them on so many trips when trying to limit my carry-on size! Just make sure you remember to pack the vacuum pump.

Bathrooms & Showers

The bathroom and shower situation will vary widely across tented safari camps. At our mobile migration camp, we had a private bathroom and shower located in our tent that was sectioned off from our main living room. The toilet looked like a traditional toilet, and I was very happy about that and did not investigate further how it worked.

The shower was an interesting setup. To get a hot shower, you would request that hot water be delivered to your tent. The camp employees would then heat up the water over a fire and put it in a giant, hanging container in the back of the tent. Once available, you’d pull the lever in the shower and voilà…hot water!

We had to keep our showers relatively short, but I had no trouble washing my long hair, as long as I used the water sparingly. You could also order more water, if needed, but we were fine sharing our hot water bucket between the two of us. Overall, I’d just recommend embracing the limited hot water supply as part of the safari experience!

Indulge in delectable cuisine prepared by talented chefs using fresh, local ingredients. Each night, we were treated to a delightful three-course meal that showcased the flavors of the region. We would start off with a delicious soup, crafted with locally sourced ingredients. The main courses offered a taste of traditional dishes and you cannot forget dessert to satisfy that sweet tooth!

As for breakfasts, they were a hearty affair, ensuring we had enough fuel to kickstart our adventurous days. And when it came to lunchtime, boxed meals prepared by the camp were the perfect solution, allowing us to maximize our time on safari without sacrificing a delicious lunch. We did come back to camp for lunch one day (and you had the option to each day), but we preferred to maximize our time on safari.

Electricity

When it comes to electricity at tented safari camps, it’s important to remember that each experience can be quite different. In our camp, we had the convenience of lamps illuminating our bedrooms and an overhead light in the bathroom.

However, when it came to charging our essential gadgets, a strategic plan was in order. All the power plugs were located in the communal living room/bar tent, which actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It meant that we could gather there after an exhilarating day on safari, enjoy a sundowner, and simultaneously recharge our phones and cameras. So no matter your camp’s organization, embrace the unique electricity setup and make it an integral part of your safari routine. I would recommend bringing extra camera batteries and an external battery to charge your phone …I ended up using them a few times overnight in my tent!

You are in the Wild

One of the most exhilarating aspects of staying in a tented safari camp is the raw and immersive experience of being in the wild. It’s important to remember that there are no enclosures separating you from the surrounding wilderness. As night falls, you may feel the gentle nudges and rustles against your tent, a reminder that you are sharing the land with the captivating wildlife. This actually happened on a few different occasions – we told ourselves it was friendly zebras just saying goodnight!

Waking up to the sight of wildebeest droppings scattered around camp is a testament to the close proximity of the animals. So, be prepared for unexpected encounters with the local residents, and make sure to zip up your tent to avoid any surprise visits from curious critters! And as you settle into your tent at night, be prepared for a symphony of sounds—the distant roars of lions, the snuffling of wildebeest, and the gentle calls of nighttime creatures. Embrace the harmony of nature and let the nocturnal orchestra serenade you to sleep.

on safari in the Serengeti

When staying in tented safari camps, it’s important to be aware of the camp’s curfew policy. For our safety, we were instructed not to leave our tents without a guide to accompany us to the communal tent or the dining tent between sunset and sunrise. In our location in the Northern Serengeti, walkie-talkie communication was extremely spotty, which the guides seemed to attribute to the cloudy sky. Don’t ask me…I am definitely not a tech expert!

The good news was we had a super easy low-tech way to ask for an escort: flashing a flashlight twice towards the main tent. Once we did that, a guide would promptly escort us to the living room/bar tent or to our dinner spot. Safety is paramount, and these precautions ensure a secure and enjoyable experience in the wilderness.

Emergencies: What to Do

In the unlikely event of an emergency, remember that you are in the middle of nowhere. The best course of action is to seek help from a camp worker who can assist you. It’s highly recommended to consider travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuations. Though the chances are low, having this coverage provides peace of mind, knowing that you have a safety net should the unexpected occur.

Is it Safe?

Ah, the million-dollar question! Rest assured, staying in a tented safari camp should be very safe as long as you follow the guidelines set in place. These camps are well-prepared to keep you safe during your safari adventure. Experienced guides and camp staff are there to ensure your safety and provide valuable insights into the local wildlife. They know the do’s and don’ts, the lions’ preferred bedtime stories, and the hyenas’ favorite pranks. The camps also implement safety measures like the curfew I mentioned above to keep the guests safe.

Wi-Fi Expectations

When it comes to staying connected, it’s essential to set realistic expectations for Wi-Fi availability. While our camp technically offered Wi-Fi, it was often unreliable and spotty. Many safari camps provide limited internet access, allowing you to share your awe-inspiring moments with the world (and maybe make your friends a little jealous.) However, depending on the day and weather conditions, the ability to send a WhatsApp message or connect online was unpredictable. So, embrace the opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in the untamed beauty of the wilderness.

Some camps boast a well-stocked bar where you can enjoy a refreshing sundowner while exchanging stories with fellow adventurers. We definitely made friends with the bartender and my friends may have finished every single bottle of cabernet that the camp had in stock! And for those who want to unleash their competitive spirit, a game section is often available, providing opportunities for some friendly (or fierce) competition. So, get ready to relax and have a roaring good time in these tented safari camps.

Level of Service

One of the highlights of our tented safari camp experience was the exceptional level of service provided by the staff. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. The entire team went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was comfortable and memorable. Whether it was offering helpful tips and suggestions, attending to our requests promptly, or simply engaging in friendly conversation at the bar in the evening, their kindness and attentiveness truly enhanced our safari adventure.

One particular gesture that stood out was being greeted with refreshing cold towels upon returning from our safaris. After a day of exploring the African wilderness, the cool towels allowed us to quickly clean up enough to feel like humans and not dust monsters! It’s those small touches of thoughtfulness that made us feel truly pampered and cared for during our stay.

Types of Africa Safari Camps

Tented safari camps & safari lodges.

The level of accommodation is a major factor in the price of your African safari, with the other main factor being the strategic location that the camp offers. Location is paramount in our safari planning , as we strive to get you in the right place at the right time of year for the wildlife you want to see.

Tented Safaris

What is a tented safari, advantages of tented safari camps.

In many cases, you may also have the opportunity for additional adventure opportunities. As an example, some of the private concessions adjacent to the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya offer night drives. These after sunset game drives offer an outstanding opportunity to view wildlife behavior in a way that many safari goers never get the chance to experience.

Not Exactly Roughing It

The tented camp categories are further classified below.

Permanent Tented Camp

Amanzi Camp

Seasonal Camp

This allows guests who stay at one of these seasonal tented camps to have easy access to game viewing which is just a short drive away. Note that an ideally situated camp will be relatively close to water which generally provides great access to a variety of African wildlife species like elephant, giraffe, lions and more (not just wildebeest and zebra).

Introducing Haven Safari

Derek Tillotson 03/21/2022 7:29am 4 minute read

Introducing Haven Safari.

Since launching the original Haven Tent on Kickstarter in 2019 , we’ve been hard at work enhancing and adapting our design to best match your adventures.  Year two saw the introduction of Haven XL . Now in year three, we're at it again. Haven Safari was designed  to be the ultimate glamping basecamp, car-camping rig, or backyard lounge hammock.

The Inspiration.

The inspiration for Haven Safari came while I was in Hawaii, on vacation with my family. One day I was paddle boarding down the coast and from my vantage point, I could see that each house along the shore had one thing in common... a hammock.

The hammocks were all the same style. Traditional backyard mesh hammocks. Iconic, but not known for being stable, or all that comfortable. You'd never take this hammock backpacking, but it is very durable and can be left out year-round.

I asked myself, " What if we could make a comfortable backyard hammock? "

The Safari Design.

Taking weight considerations out of the equation, we were able to dial up the other features that make the Haven Tent special. The 300d 4000mm polyester canvas makes Safari robust enough for prolonged use and permanent installation*. The heavier material also gives additional structure to our patented design, pushing hammock performance even further.

The Haven design is much more stable, relative to traditional backyard and gathered end hammocks because the sleeping platform is far below the hammock attachment points. Our sidewalls hold you in place while also granting easy entry and exit. I did a whole blog post on this!

Meanwhile, the Insulated Safari Pad is an absolute game-changer. It is the same dimensions as our Insulated Pad XL , 30x80x4 inches (76x203x10 cm). But is made from thicker material with a soft vegan suede coating. The horizontal baffles hold the space open and the thicker material helps with durability and even more structural rigidity. Just like our other insulated pads, the Safari Pad stuff sack converts to a pump bag and it is also compatible with our PowerPump .

World's First Glamping Hammock

A Google search for the term "glamping tent" will give you hundreds of options. Ground tents that are designed for maximum comfort and aesthetic appeal. Other than Haven Safari there are no other true glamping hammocks. We're happy to be the first!

My first interaction with a hammock was along that same coastline in Hawaii. My grandma had a hammock between two palm trees in her yard and us cousins spent hours, not lounging... but trying to flip each other out onto the grass. She's in her late 80's now, and she'll be getting the first Safari tent we ship. See that video here.

The stability and comfort of Haven Safari make it suitable for any age. And my kids will tell you, it's pretty fun to swing in too.

*Permanent Installation: Follow these steps to prolong the effective lifespan of Haven Safari and the Insulated Safari Pad.

  • When not in use, secure the rainfly to the hammock body. Connect the 4 corner toggles to the rainfly corner eyelets and connect the hook in the fly to the bungee loop at the middle of the hammock.
  • When not in use, slightly deflate the air mattress. High temperatures will make the air inside the pad expand and could damage the pad.
  • Make sure the hammock and rainfly are not rubbing against anything. The material is thick but can be worn down over time.
  • Do not use without an air mattress.

Fast setup, standing room!

Super fast setup, great quality materials! standing room is great! Used the tent for the first time this past weekend, I have no complaints at all

Shawn  |  May 29th 2023

Super Fast Setup/Takedown

I love this tent! It’s one of the fastest to put up and down and has lots of space. We use a full size and twin size Exped mattresses to fill up the entire floor for sleeping space. I do need to transport it on the roof rack because its pretty long when in its bag, but that works fine for my use case. The built in awning is great, I just wish I could buy some walls to fully enclose that space to put our gear in since we use the entire interior of the tent for sleeping space.

Want the best views while camping and stargazing? The Safari Camper is for you

O verlanding is trending of late and this has pushed companies to innovate like never before. China-based Wild Land, ever the overlanding gear pioneer, announced their newest creation, the 3-in-1 Safari Cruiser.

This remarkable product is not just a pickup bed rack or a truck topper but a panoramic two-story camping complex, a marvel of engineering. Unlike conventional pickup toppers, the Safari Cruiser stands out by dropping to cab height and width during travel, thereby enhancing aerodynamics without compromising on interior space.

The Safari Cruiser secures to the top of a pickup truck's bed rails, resembling a sleek, square-cornered version of a cab-height pickup shell. However, despite its unassuming appearance, this loaded box, weighing 550 lb (250 kg), harbors a plethora of features.

Its electric double-lift system is especially praiseworthy, enabling a smooth transformation from a closed shell to a high two-story base camp, with an upper rooftop tent and a flexible lower space inside the pickup bed.

Two-story bliss on the move

Once at the campsite, the Safari Cruiser unfolds its magic. With a press of a button on the provided keychain remote, users can activate the battery pack mounted to the wall of the truck bed, and watch as the Safari Cruiser rises into a two-story haven.

The upper tent reached via a ladder in the pickup bed, offers a sleeping space with breathtaking 270-degree views, courtesy of a full-mesh front panel and a clear skylight overhead. Wild Land introduces front and rear fold-out tent floor extensions, which can be manually folded out to expand the sleeping area from a cube of length 171 cm to a generous trapezoidal prism 87 x 55 inches (220 x 140 cm).

The upper tent, accessible via a ladder in the pickup bed, boasts a full-mesh front panel, offering breathtaking panoramic 270-degree views. On clear nights, campers can stargaze through the skylight overhead. Additionally, the rooftop features a 30-W solar panel , powering LED lighting, and a lift system battery.

Challenges in the Wild

While the Safari Cruiser excels in innovation, questions linger about its practicality in the field. The lower space inside the pickup bed, limited to a 59-in (150-cm) height, may not be suitable for standing. The sleeping area, although provides a brilliant panoramic view, lacks full weather protection without an enclosed back. Additionally, the design raises concerns about stability in windy conditions due to its high and broad sides.

The Safari Cruiser boasts crossbars on top capable of holding up to 66 pounds (30 kg), to which bikes, kayaks, and other outdoor adventure gear can be mounted, according to Auto Evolution .

Wild Land has currently launched the Safari Cruiser in the Chinese market, with plans for global expansion in the works. The company seeks distributors and will showcase the unit at the upcoming Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in the United States. Priced at an estimated US$10,000, the Safari Cruiser isn’t the most affordable but is attractive to adventurers with its unique blend of innovation and functionality.

The incident happened early Sunday morning at the Thoiry zoo , about 25 miles west of the City of Lights.

The woman suffered bites to her on neck, back and calf, according to Agence France-Presse . She is reportedly fighting for her life. She was rescued by park workers who heard her screams , BBC News reported.

Officials said the woman had been staying at the zoo’s safari-style lodge with her family when she decided to go for a run.

“The behavior of the animals in the reserves is that of animals in freedom or semi-liberty,” Wow Safari Thoiry CEO Christelle Bercheny told AFP.

The lodge offers up-close views of wildlife from the rooms, with animals passing by the windows.

Officials said it wasn’t clear if the woman made a mistake or the trail wasn’t marked properly, leading to her going into the safari area that is restricted to guests and cars.

However, the woman would have gone by a security system, a trench and an electric fence to end up in the section with the wolves, according to The Guardian.

Without Food Or Toys, A Gaza Family Tries To Survive

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

Israeli bombardments have destroyed large areas of Gaza including refugee camps like Jabaliya

Surrounded by a sea of rubble, the Palestinian Al-Balawi family in northern Gaza hang blankets above the ruins of their home to create a makeshift tent that provides shade from the searing summer heat.

The family are struggling to feed themselves in the Jabalia refugee camp after the nearly nine months of war that have followed Hamas's October 7 attack.

Gazans are suffering from severe shortages of supplies including food and water alongside Israel's bombardment of the territory, forcing desperate mothers like Umm Siraj al-Balawi to fight for their survival with no end to the conflict in sight.

"There are no vegetables or fruits. No vitamin intake. When you get sick, you stay in bed for two or three weeks to recover," the 33-year-old told AFP.

"This war must stop, because it is a war of displacement. It is a war of annihilation."

Jabalia has been hit particularly hard in recent weeks, with Israeli forces carrying out a massive bombardment campaign, part of a fierce ground offensive in northern Gaza -- an area the military had previously said was out of the control of Hamas militants.

Israeli forces retrieved the bodies of some hostages from Jabalia and in May reported "perhaps the fiercest" fighting there since the start of the war.

Desperation among Gaza's 2.4 million population has increased as the fighting has raged, with warnings from humanitarian agencies that they are unable to deliver aid.

Vital supplies of food have piled up undistributed on the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom crossing, a key conduit for aid to enter Gaza.

Israel says it has let supplies in and called on agencies to step up distribution, while aid organisations including the United Nations say they have been unable to pick up supplies because of a breakdown in civil order in Gaza.

The war broke out after Hamas's October 7 attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,194 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

In retaliation Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas, which rules Gaza, and its ensuing bombing and ground campaign have killed at least 37,598 people, also mostly civilians, according to the territory's health ministry.

The misery of Gazans has only been exacerbated by Israel's bombing raids it says are to destroy the infrastructure of Hamas.

On Saturday at least 24 people died after huge strikes on two Gaza City neighbourhoods.

The strikes left several residential complexes in rubble, while the Israeli military said it had targeted two Hamas military infrastructure sites.

"People are getting displaced from house to house, tent to tent, school to school," said Umm.

"They (Israelis) instructed people to head to Rafah before instructing them to evacuate Rafah. They are doing the same in Khan Yunis. Until when?"

The Al-Balawi family's dire situation leaves them scrabbling in a wasteland of debris for items like pillows and food.

"The situation was very very difficult (before the war). And it became worse after the war," said Umm's husband Abu, 34.

He pulls a pink cushion from the wreckage of buildings, passing it to his wife who beats it to clear it of dust.

Elsewhere he uses a spade to claw back mounds of rubble before finding a red teddy bear for his young son.

He then leads his children through a destroyed street to get hold of much-sought-after water, before heading back to their tent where his children share some bread and beans from a bowl.

"There is scarcity of food and water, we can barely find food for our children. Diseases have spread in all the areas where the displaced are gathered."

For their nine-year-old boy Siraj the horrors of war are apparent, despite his age.

"We can't find clothes. We have no clothes," he complains.

"There are no toys," he adds, holding up a damaged doll. "We have no house."

Wolves attack woman who went jogging in French safari zoo

The woman was treated at the nearest hospital and her condition has now 'stabilized.'(Pexels)

A woman staying at a French safari zoo was attacked by several wolves on Sunday after she entered a part of the zoo usually accessible only by car.

“Luckily the medical staff intervened very quickly and we were able to save this person,” the zoo’s CEO Christelle Bercheny told a press conference.

  • Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts and video on all the top stories

The attack took place at about 9.30 a.m. at the Thoiry zoological park in Yvelines, approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of Paris, French affiliate TF1 said.

After staying the night at the park, the woman, 37, went out jogging and accidentally entered the safari zone, TF1 reported, adding the area was a seven-hectare space where animals, wolves and bears roam freely.

TF1 said it was while she was running that the wolves “pounced” on her, adding that she sustained “serious” injuries and was bitten on the neck, calf and back.

The woman was treated at the nearest hospital and her condition has now “stabilized” TF1 reported.

The zoo has launched an investigation.
