Budapest Opera House

The  Budapest Opera House , in Hungarian known as the Magyar Állami Operaház, is located in central Pest. It was built according to the Neo-Renaissance style, a movement that developed in the XIX century along with Neo-Classicism and Neo-Gothic based on the Renaissance Architecture.

The Budapest Opera House   officially opened its doors on  September 27th 1884 ; at that time it had 1.310 seats.

The decorations

The building is characterized by  renaissance  and baroque decorations. It was built between 1875 and 1884 by the famous Hungarian architect  Miklós Ybl . The structure features various frescos, sculptures, and works of art made by local artists such as Bertalan Székely, Károly Lotz, and Mór Than. The reception hall features some works made by Árpád Feszty.

The entrance of the right side is characterized by statues of Ferenc Erkel, author and composer of the national anthem of Hungary, as well as of Franz Liszt, the best known Hungarian composer. Both statues were sculpted by Alajos Stróbl. The structure is very well cured in all its details, both on its inside and on its facade, shaping a suggestive visual impact. The royal box, the foyer, the main gateway, and the numerous works of art turn this theater into a very unique place.

Visiting the theater

If you are spending your holidays in Budapest and you wish to learn more about the Opera House, you can take one of the many  guided tours available in different   languages, or you can also see one of the many performances and shows scheduled by the theater.

The very first performance played at the Opera House dates back to 1886; a trio of piano and arch performed by the violinist Jeno Hubay, the cellist David Popper, and Johannes Brahms who was a composer, piano player and music director.

Illustrious guests from the past Empress Elizabeth used to attend the Budapest Opera Theater even when emperor Franz Josef could not come along.

The Budapest Opera House opens from:

  • From Monday to Saturday : from 11.00 to 17.00 or until the beginning of the show
  • On  Sundays and holidays : from 16.00 until the beginning to the show

Ticket offices open at 10am on the morning of the show, and stay closed on Sundays if there are not scheduled events.

History and Architecture of Budapest Opera House

Budapest’s Opera House will enchant you not only with its ballet and opera performances but its fine neo-Renaissance architecture.

The building fits well in with the similarly elegant neighbourhood on Andrássy Avenue . Hungary’s greatest Historicist architect, Miklós Ybl designed the building for the Millennium celebrations in 19th century.

Among numerous other buildings, he designed the Castle Bazaar and Royal Gardens in Buda, at the foot of the Royal Palace , that got nicely refurbished in 2014, The complex has been turned into a cultural and entertainment centre while preserving the historic edifices.

The Opera House facade in the 19.century

Construction started in 1875 and the building was finished in 1884. Ybl oversaw the work himself with painstaking care.

The building cost a lot of money, the auditorium was decorated with more than 7 kgs of gold . Hundreds of statues and paintings decorate the Budapest Opera House both inside and out.

Emperor Franz Joseph financed the construction, though he received little recognition for his generosity.

He in turn didn’t appreciated the architect’s work on the opening ceremony: “It’s very beautiful. I like it very much.” was all he said about Europe’s most magnificent and modern opera house.

Front of Budapest Opera House

Budapest’s second opera house, the Erkel Ferenc Theatre on Köztársaság tér in district VIII. also belongs to and managed by the Hungarian State Opera House.

Budapest Opera House From The Outside

Statues of the world greatest composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi adorn the main facade.

Seated statues of Franz Liszt and Ferenc Erkel , the first director of the Opera House stand on the sides of the main entrance.

Wrought iron lamps decorate the main entrance. Two imposing stone sphinxes guard the main entrance.

On the right you’ll find the entrance for artists , while on the left there’s a carriage-way and entrance to the Royal Staircase.

In the niches at the first floor level statues of the four muses of opera reside.

The Interior of the Budapest Opera House

The interior boasts a impressive foyer with a double grand staircase, and grey marble columns supporting the arches.

Works of famous Hungarian artists decorate the interior.

Beautiful frescoes and statues represent mythological motifs. Mosaic tiles cover the floor that resemble to ancient Greek mosaics.

The three-storey high, horseshoe-shaped main auditorium can seat nearly 1,300 people.

On the ceiling you can see Karoly Lotz’s breathtaking frescoes depicting Olympus and the Greek gods.

The Grand Stair Case in the Opera House

A huge gilded chandelier hangs down from the ceiling. Every level has a different layout and decoration. Gold and red dominate the lavish auditorium that reflects elegance.

Do visit the buffet in the break not just for a glass of nice Hungarian wine , but it’s a splendid site in itself.

On the ceiling you can admire main events from Dionysos life. Landscape paintings by Árpád Feszty decorate the sidewalls.

During the reconstruction between 1980-84 the Opera House regained its original splendour to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its opening.

The Budapest Opera house soon became one of the leading cultural venues of Europe. Ferenc Erkel, composer of Hungary’s national anthem and founder of the Hungarian opera, was the first director .

The Auditorium in the Opera House

Gustav Mahler also directed the opera house and personally directed two Puccini operas here. Other famous conductors include Otto Klemperer or Sergio Failloni.

What to Wear in the Opera in Budapest? – Dress Code

In Hungary people always dress up when they go to a theatre or to the Opera. Women usually wear nice evening dresses, while men wear dark suits.

Wearing jeans and a T-shirts doesn’t mean that you’ll be sent home from the entrance, but it’s not nice to feel out of place because of your clothes.

My advice is that put on something simple, but elegant. Make sure though that you feel yourself confident and comfortable in your dress.

Tickets & Prices

Regular tickets: your key to world-class performances.

Let’s start your virtual journey with the regular tickets, the classic way to experience the Budapest Opera House. These tickets cater to each performance and they range in price depending on the seat category, from the pocket-friendly 500 HUF (1.4 EUR) to the more extravagant 25,000 HUF (72 EUR).

The beauty of these tickets is the wide range of options you have. Want to feel like a royal in the orchestra seats or simply enjoy a casual night at the opera from the balcony? You have the freedom to choose.

However, there’s a catch. These tickets are in high demand and might require you to book in advance. If you’re the spontaneous type, this might feel a bit restrictive. But trust me, the experience is worth the pre-planning.

Season Tickets: A Commitment to Culture

If you’re someone who swoons over the symphony of sound that the opera house offers and plans to attend multiple shows, season tickets might be your best bet.

These tickets offer a series of performances at a discounted rate, typically ranging from 10% to 30% off the regular price. Plus, you get the added bonus of securing the same seat for each show.

While the savings and seat security are tempting, remember you’ll need to commit to a fixed schedule. If you’re unable to make all the shows for some reason, you might miss out on the money-saving benefits. But on the bright side, you’ll be part of an exclusive club of dedicated culture enthusiasts!

Discount Tickets: For the Savvy and the Swift

Yes, the Budapest Opera House cares for everyone. They offer discount tickets for students, seniors, disabled people, and even last-minute buyers.

Also, if you don’t mind standing for the duration of the performance, there are standing-room only tickets available.

The advantages? You save money and get to enjoy the performance even if you decided to attend at the eleventh hour. The trade-off is that these tickets are limited in number and might not offer the best viewing experience.

But hey, the thrill of scoring a last-minute ticket and the sense of camaraderie among the standees is a unique experience in itself!

Online Tickets: Your Virtual Pass

In this digital age, the Budapest Opera House has made sure you can secure your tickets from the comfort of your couch. Online tickets are available through the official website or authorized partners like Vienna Classic or Prague Ticket Office.

The process is convenient, fast, and secure.

Do keep in mind that you might have to pay extra fees, and you’ll need to either print your ticket or exchange it at the box office. But think of it this way, you’re skipping the physical queue and securing your spot in the virtual one.

Directions: Navigating Your Way to the Hungarian Opera House

By public transport.

The quickest way to reach the grandiose Hungarian Opera House is by taking Metro Line 1 to the Opera station. It’s known as the “yellow line” to locals due to its color on the map.

Buying tickets is a cinch, with vending machines, ticket offices, and newsstands offering single tickets for 450 HUF (approximately $1.3 USD). For more freedom to explore, a 24-hour pass costs 1,650 HUF (around $4.8 USD).

Alternatively, consider the Budapest Card, a local secret to unlimited public transport access. Not only does it cover all your travel, but also offers exclusive discounts on various attractions.

A 24-hour card costs 7,990 HUF ($23 USD), with 48-hour and 72-hour options available as well.

If you prefer a direct route, hail a licensed taxi. Look for yellow signs and number plates starting with “F” to make sure you’re getting a legit ride. Apps like Bolt and Főtaxi are also great options.

They provide an estimated fare and arrival time, and you can pay by cash or card.

A taxi ride from the city center to the opera house will set you back around 1,500 HUF ($4.3 USD). However, the fare can be influenced by factors such as distance, time, traffic, and route.

Insider tip: Always ask for an estimate before hopping in and keep an eye on the meter.

Driving in Budapest

Driving in Budapest can be a bit of a challenge due to limited parking near popular spots like the opera house and the congestion charge for entering the city center between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm on weekdays.

Parking garages on Paulay Ede utca or Zrínyi utca are available, but expect to pay around 500 HUF ($1.4 USD) per hour.

The congestion charge is 900 HUF ($2.6 USD) per day, payable online or at a terminal within two days of entering the zone.

Biking Around

Renting a bike from a MOL Bubi station is an eco-friendly and fun way to navigate the city. The bike routes to the opera house vary, from an easy ride down Andrassy Avenue to a more challenging journey along Nagymezo Street.

There are plenty of bike parking options near the opera house, from bike racks to guarded parking lots.

Walking the City

Walking is a fantastic way to soak in the sights. The opera house is only a 15-minute stroll from Deak Square, or a 7-minute walk from St. Stephen’s Basilica.

The journey from Heroes’ Square is a bit longer, around 25 minutes, but it takes you past some of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks, like the haunting House of Terror and the lively Liszt Ferenc Square.

Entrance: Finding Your Way In

Let’s start with the basics: where to enter the magnificent Hungarian State Opera House. With its imposing façade, the main entrance is hard to miss.

You’ll find it on the city’s famed Andrassy Avenue, a boulevard brimming with history and culture. As you approach, take a moment to admire the grand portico adorned with statues of famous composers. It’s a sight sure to stir the anticipation for the musical experience that awaits you.

At the entrance, have your tickets ready for scanning at the turnstiles. Whether you’ve got season tickets, discount tickets, or single-show tickets, they’ll all be accepted here.

But what if you’re part of a guided tour?

Well, in that case, you’ll need to buy or exchange your tour vouchers at the box office or the tour desk near the entrance. Trust me, there’s no better way to explore the opera house than with a knowledgeable guide.

Online Tickets and Fast-Track Access

Now, if you’re like me and prefer to sort out everything online, you’re in for a treat. There’s a side entrance on Hajos Street, marked by a smaller portico and a sign that says “Online Ticket Entrance”.

This entrance is a godsend for those of us who like to skip the queue and get on with the fun part faster.

And speaking of skipping lines, did you know that fast-track access is available for visitors with online tickets?

Just show your printed or electronic tickets at the door, and you’re in! It also applies if you have a Budapest Card, a city pass that offers unlimited public transport and discounts on various attractions, including the opera house. It’s a must-have for any savvy traveler.

Dress to Impress

Now, let’s talk about what to wear. While there’s no strict dress code, remember that you are visiting a venue of prestige and beauty.

So, dress appropriately and respectfully. For performances, think smart and elegant. Leave the jeans and sneakers behind and opt for a more refined look. Ladies, this is the perfect opportunity to flaunt that little black dress and accessorize with some dazzling jewelry. Gents, a nice blazer won’t be amiss.

If you’re joining a guided tour, comfort is key. So, go for casual clothes that are both stylish and easy to move in. Just remember, no shorts or flip-flops, please!

Timing is Everything

Finally, let’s talk about when to visit. The best time of day to visit the opera house really depends on what kind of experience you’re after. For performances, the evening shows bring a sense of romance and enchantment.

If you’re more of a daytime person, matinee shows are a great choice.

For guided tours, early morning slots let you explore the opera house in peace and quiet. If you’re a fan of photography, the golden light of late afternoon tours makes for stunning pictures. Just remember to plan your day accordingly, as some tours may take longer than others.

Remember, whether you’re catching a performance or exploring the opera house on a guided tour, the key is to choose a time slot that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Don’t rush; after all, it’s not every day you get to visit one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world!

What to see and do

Experiencing the grandeur of a performance.

There’s nothing quite like the electrifying energy of a live performance at the Budapest Opera House. Trust me, the cultural and artistic excellence of this venue is unmatched.

You’ll be mesmerized by the world-class talent from singers, dancers, and musicians performing classics like The Nutcracker or La Traviata. If you’re lucky, you might even catch special performances like Carmen or Swan Lake.

Here’s a top tip from a local: Book your tickets online in advance. Not only will it save you from long queues, but you’ll also have a better chance of securing the best seats. For those on a budget, look for discounts for students or seniors, or try your luck with last-minute tickets.

Unlocking History with Guided Tours

If history and architecture pique your interest, then a guided tour is a must. It’s like stepping into a time machine. You’ll learn about everything from the opera house’s conception to its recent restoration.

The grand staircase, adorned with frescoes of Hungarian legends, and the royal box, reserved for Emperor Franz Joseph, are just some of the highlights.

To make the most out of your tour, book your slots online or at the box office. And for a truly immersive experience, pick a timeslot with fewer crowds and better lighting.

You might want to bring binoculars too, just in case.

Marvel at the Architecture and Art

The Budapest Opera House isn’t just a venue for performances. It’s also a canvas for some of the finest art and architecture in Europe.

Take a moment to admire the neo-Renaissance design by Miklós Ybl, one of the most influential Hungarian architects of the 19th century.

The statues on the facade, the ceiling paintings by Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely, and the sculptures by Alajos Stróbl are just some of the masterpieces you’ll encounter.

Did you know? This opera house is filled with hidden symbols and motifs that relate to music and Hungary. See if you can spot them while you explore. And don’t forget to ask for permission if you want to take photos or videos.

Peek Behind the Curtain

The backstage is where the real magic happens, and it’s filled with fascinating secrets waiting to be discovered.

From the hydraulic stage lift that can transform the stage in an instant to the revolving platform that changes scenes swiftly, you’ll be amazed at the complex operations that occur behind the scenes.

Ghost stories, anyone? Yes, the opera house has its share of haunting tales and superstitions. If you’re up for a thrilling adventure, book a special backstage tour or attend an open rehearsal. Who knows, you might even get a chance to meet the performers!

What to Expect from a Visit to the State Opera House

Your time at the opera.

So, you’re planning a visit to the majestic State Opera House in Budapest? Excellent choice! But, how long should you expect to be there, you might wonder? Well, depending on the performance, your visit could last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.

Remember, opera isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon of art and beauty.

Factors that can affect this include the length of the performance and intermissions, as well as your arrival and departure times. A hot tip from your local friend (that’s me) – check the schedule in advance and plan your transport accordingly. That way, you can truly enjoy the experience without watching the clock.

The Show Must Go On

Every day is different at the State Opera House with a rotating schedule filled with operas, ballets, concerts, musicals, and more. You can catch timeless classics like The Nutcracker in December or La Traviata in February.

And let’s not forget the spine-tingling performance of The Phantom of the Opera in October.

So, what’s the best way to stay updated? Keep an eye on their official website or other online platforms like Vienna Classic or Prague Ticket Office.

Alternatively, grab a printed brochure from the opera house or around the city. You’ll never miss a beat!

Dress for the Occasion

One thing to remember when attending a performance at the State Opera House is the dress code. From formal to semi-formal events, the opera house is a place to dress to impress.

Steer clear of casual wear like jeans or sneakers and instead, opt for elegant attire.

Ladies, throw on a chic dress and accessorize with some glittering jewelry. Gents, a crisp suit never fails. And hey, if there’s a theme for the night – go for it! Need some outfit inspiration?

Check out online shops like Zalando or ASOS, or consider renting an outfit from Rent The Runway or GlamCorner.

Mind Your Manners

Lastly, let’s talk etiquette. The Budapest State Opera House is a place of reverence for art, and there are a few rules to follow.

Remember to switch off your phone to avoid disturbing the performance or other visitors. Refrain from chit-chat during the performance, and save the photo ops for before or after the show.

A round of applause is always welcome, but only at appropriate times. Most importantly, respect those around you and the staff who work tirelessly to bring these performances to life.

How to Enjoy a Guided Tour of the State Opera House

Booking your guided tour of the opera house.

Embarking on a journey through the Budapest Opera House? You’re in for a treat! But first things first: booking your tickets.

You can do this online through the official website or authorized partners like Vienna Classic or the Prague Ticket Office. Going digital gives you a convenient, fast, and secure booking experience but watch out for those extra fees and remember to print your voucher or exchange it at the box office.

Alternatively, you can book on-site at the Opera House’s box office or at the tour desk near the main entrance. This approach lends more flexibility and spontaneity to your visit.

However, be prepared for limited availability and potentially higher prices. If you ask me, I’d say it’s worth it just to avoid the queues!

Exploring the History of the Opera House

Once you’ve got your tickets sorted, you’ll dive into the rich history of the Opera House. The guided tour takes you on a journey from the Opera House’s inception to the present day.

You’ll learn about its construction, opening, renovations, and even its restoration. Did you know Emperor Franz Joseph himself was involved in the Opera House’s inception, sparking a rivalry with Vienna?

The tour also delves into the Opera House’s struggles during World War II, and its triumphant reopening in 2023. It’s a tale of resilience and recovery that is sure to move you.

Marvelling at the Architecture

The Opera House is a masterpiece of neo-Renaissance design. As you wander through, you’ll witness the grandeur of its facade, the intricate design of its dome, the elegance of its staircase, and the sheer majesty of its auditorium.

Fun fact: the auditorium’s acoustics boast a reverberation time of 1.2 seconds, which, trust me, is a big deal in the acoustics world!

Don’t miss the statues of famous composers and the stunning frescoes depicting Hungarian legends. The pièce de résistance, of course, is the chandelier composed of 3,000 individual pieces. It’s a sight that’ll leave you speechless.

Discovering Artistic Treasures

The Opera House isn’t just about music; it’s also home to an impressive collection of art. Paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and costumes adorn every corner. Keep an eye out for “The Queen of Sheba” by Károly Lotz and “The Apotheosis of Music” by Bertalan Székely.

The Phantom’s Mask by Maria Björnson always catches my eye. It’s like a treasure hunt, but with art!

Going Behind the Scenes

Now, if you’re like me, you’ll love the tour’s backstage section. This is where you’ll get a glimpse into the secret workings of the Opera House. From the complex machinery and lighting to the props and the dressing rooms, it’s a whole other world back there.

Did you know the Opera House has a hydraulic stage lift and a revolving stage platform? And let’s not forget the trap doors and fly system.

And if you’re a fan of spooky tales, ask your guide about the ghost stories and superstitions that circulate amongst the staff.

Interesting Facts and Anecdotes

Did you know the Opera House was built on a former swamp? It even has a complex drainage system underneath it. And there’s a royal box that was rarely used by Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Sisi.

One of my favorite anecdotes is about a secret tunnel that connects the Opera House to a nearby palace. Aristocrats used to attend masked balls there after performances.

And there’s a hidden chamber behind a painting where a mysterious benefactor used to leave gifts for his favorite singers. How’s that for a dash of romance and intrigue?

Performances and artists at the opera house

Exploring the extravaganza of the budapest opera house.

A visit to Budapest is incomplete without setting foot in the grand opulence of the Budapest Opera House. This architectural marvel is not just about its stunning façade, it’s a world filled with vibrant performances that capture the heart and soul of Hungarian culture.

The Majestic Operas

The heart of the opera house beats in its operas. They are the main draw and let me tell you, they are something to write home about. Showcasing the vocal prowess of the singers, the orchestral skills of the musicians, and the artistic vision of the directors, operas at this house are a feast for the senses. From the classic operas of Verdi to the contemporary works of today, the opera house has a rich and diverse repertoire that any music lover would appreciate.

And if you’re worried about the language barrier, fear not! The operas are performed in their original language, but subtitles in Hungarian or English ensure you’re not lost in translation. My personal tip? Dress up a little. This isn’t just a performance, it’s a cultural experience.

Ballets – A Dance of Emotion

If graceful leaps and pirouettes are more your style, the ballets at the opera house will leave you speechless. The raw physicality of the dancers and artistic choreography creates a performance that transcends language.

Whether it’s a classical ballet or a modern interpretation, you can feel the emotion in every move, even without words or subtitles.

I would recommend dressing comfortably for the ballet – after all, it’s all about the dance, not the dress code.

Concerts – A Symphony of Sounds

Every now and then, the opera house echoes with the soulful sounds of concerts. With a diverse repertoire that spans from classical to contemporary works, these concerts are a treat for music lovers.

Whether it’s symphonic, chamber, choral, or pop, these concerts encapsulate the universal language of music. And the best part? You can dress according to your mood, making it a fun, personalized experience.

Musicals – The Perfect Blend

For those who like their music with a side of drama, the opera house presents musicals that are a perfect blend of vocal, dramatic and dancing talents.

From classic to modern works, these musicals are a riot of color, sound, and spectacle. Dress casually and comfortably, and get ready to be whisked away into a world of catchy tunes and compelling storytelling.

Festivals – The Celebration of Art

Festivals at the opera house are a cultural extravaganza. These special events celebrate themes, genres, and artists, offering a unique repertoire of selected works.

You might even get a chance to partake in workshops, lectures, exhibitions, or parties. So, keep a close eye on their schedule and get ready to immerse in the festive spirit.

Special Occasions – The Milestones of the Opera House

Special occasions at the opera house are rare but unforgettable. These events commemorate milestones and achievements, offering an exclusive repertoire of exceptional works.

It’s not every day you get to rub shoulders with celebrities in a glamorous setting, is it? So, dress your best and make it a night to remember.

The Star Performances

Now, let’s talk about the star performers that have graced the stage of the opera house. From Tchaikovsky’s enchanting “The Nutcracker” to Verdi’s passionate “La Traviata”, to the thrilling “Phantom of the Opera”, and Mozart’s imaginative “The Magic Flute”, the opera house has been home to some of the world’s most famous works and composers.

Insider Tips

Snagging the best seat at the opera house.

As an insider tip, if you’re looking to soak in the rich culture of Budapest through a mesmerizing performance at the Hungarian State Opera House, opt for the often overlooked upper balcony seats.

These seats offer an incredible view and incredible acoustics, all without breaking the bank. You can snag these tickets online or directly from Vienna Classic or Prague Ticket Office. But be warned, these tickets are Budapest’s best kept secret and they sell out quickly. So, if you’re planning to catch an opera, it’s worth booking in advance.

This 90-minute tour reveals the magic behind the curtains, giving you a glimpse into the stage machinery, lighting system, props, and dressing rooms. For both tours, you can book online or at the aforementioned ticket offices. However, the backstage tour is only available on certain days and times, so be sure to plan accordingly!
