About Lotus Temple Delhi

Lotus Temple Delhi is one of the most sought after places to visit, attracting tourists from all over the world. It is one of the seven major Bahai’s temples in the world. Architecture of Lotus Temple

Delhi Kamal Temple was built by the Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba, who won many awards for this architectural masterpiece. As the name suggests, it is in the shape of a lotus flower. It is one of the six major Baha'i houses of worship; rest of six are in Sydney (Australia), Panama City (Panama), Wilmette (USA), Apia (Western Samoa), Frankfurt (Germany) and Kampala (Uganda).

Built with marble, the temple is in the shape of a half opened lotus with 27 petals. The intricate design of the temple showcasing the everlasting charm of a lotus is an example of architectural brilliance. Lotus flowering building was built in the said shape as the lotus flower is connected with various other major religions of the world, hence representing oneness and harmony.

Lotus temple construction took around 10 years of time for completion. Along with the chief architect, there was a team of around 800 engineers, technicians, artisans and workers who took part in the creation of Lotus Temple Delhi . A lot of hard work has also gone into making this captivating temple. For instance, petals of the lotus flower were covered in a continuous work of 48 hours; this was done to avoid construction joints.

The structure of Lotus Temple Delhi has primarily three layers of nine petals. Each rank of nine petals is raised on a podium which further elevates the building. Out of the three levels, first two are built in inward curve which appear to be covering the inner dome while the third rank is curved in the outward direction, creating a shed kind of covering over nine entrances.

As the geometry of the Lotus temple design consists of no straight line, the construction of the structure with intricate double curved surfaces was nothing less than a challenge for the architect, technicians and everyone involved.

The petals have been built of reinforced white concrete cast, clad with white marble panels. To avoid rust stains on the white concrete, the shells of the lotus petals have been galvanized. There are nine arches that offer support to the ring of central hall.

The Lotus flower is half open, hence makes a way for the natural light to enter the auditorium of the Lotus Mahal Delhi. There is a roof of glass and steel that provide protection from rain and dust while allowing light to pass through.

Lotus Temple Interior

Spread over 26 acres of land, Lotus Temple Delhi comprises of a few parts, the main building, which is the centre of the worship, an administrative building and a library, a reception centre, restrooms, etc. The main assembly area of the temple is in the shape of lotus flower.

The entire structure is made up of white marble, which further adds to its hypnotizing beauty. The marble used in constructing the temple was brought from Penteli Mountain in Greece; it is said that all the prominent Bahai house of worship are built with the same marble.

The Inside lotus Temple consists of a central hall of the Bahai temple Delhi that is around 40 meter tall with a whopping capacity of accommodating around 2500 people. There are nine entrances to this hall. All the nine entrances are surrounded by gardens and ponds which present a captivating sight. The temple in the shape of lotus flower appears to be floating in a wide spread of water.

Another attractive feature of Lotus temple Delhi is that it is the first temple in entire Delhi to start using solar power.

Kalkaji Devi Temple – The most sought after place to visit near Lotus Temple is the Kalkaji Devi Temple. One of the most popular temples not only in Delhi but in entire North India, Kalkaji Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali in the form of Goddess Kalka who was incarnated to kill the demon Raktabija. It is located opposite to the Nehru Place business centre. According to legend, the image of Goddess Kalka is self-manifested. Delhi's distinctive Lotus Temple belongs to the Baha'í faith and is one of the city's top attractions . It's estimated that an average of 10,000 people visit the temple every day. Most come to admire its unusual architecture, resembling a floating lotus flower. The award-winning design has been widely acclaimed and featured in numerous publications, documentaries, and even on a postage stamp. The teachings of the Baha'í faith are also of interest to visitors. The religion, which originated in Iran, promotes oneness and aims to create world unity by eliminating all prejudices including race and gender. Read on to find out all you need to know about the Lotus Temple in this complete guide.

The Baha'í faith is a relatively new religion that grew out of the Shi'ite branch of Islam in the mid 19th century. While Iran was experiencing widespread instability and turmoil, a 24-year-old merchant named Siyyid Ali Muhammad Shirazi claimed to be a messenger from God and a direct descendant of the prophet Muhammad. He called himself The Bab (The Gate) and started spreading a revolutionary message that paved the way for the foundation of the Baha'í faith. His main point was that a new prophet would appear after him to transform humanity. This contradicted a key a tenet of Islam, whereby Mohammad is the final prophet, and led to The Bab's execution in 1850.

Subsequently, while persecuted and imprisoned, one of The Bab's followers had the revelation that he was the manifestation of God that The Bab talked about. He called himself Baha'u'llah (the Glory of God) and went on to write the scriptures that form the basis of the Baha'í faith. After he died in 1892, his eldest son Abdu'l-Baha became the interpreter of his teachings and served as the head of the religion until 1921. He was succeeded by his grandson, Shoghi Effendi, who became the Guardian of the Baha'í faith and helped spread it worldwide.

By 2015, India had the world's largest population of Baha’i devotees, with 40% of the religion's 6 million followers living there.

A goal of the Baha'í faith is to build Houses of Worship (Mashriqu'l-Adhkar) all over the world. These will be central to its community and activities but where everyone is welcome to come and connect to the divine regardless of religion. Although the Baha'í faith has its own scriptures, it believes that the religious teachings of all "prophets" (including Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Buddha, and Krishna) are valid and thus there is underlying unity of religions.

The Lotus Temple in Delhi is one of eight Houses of Worship that currently exist, on every continent except Antarctica. The Baha'í community privately purchased the land for the Lotus Temple in 1953. Later, in 1976, its governing body chose renowned Iranian-born Canadian architect Fariborz Sahba to build the temple. Construction started in 1980 and the temple opened to the public in December 1986.

The Lotus Temple is situated amid 26 acres of landscaped gardens on Lotus Temple Road in Bahapur, near Nehru Place, in south Delhi . It's 30-45 minutes from the city center. The closest Metro train station is Kalkaji Mandir on the Violet Line (see Delhi Metro train map ), a five minute walk away.

How to Visit

The temple complex is open daily, except Mondays, from 9:30 a.m. to sunset. It closes at 5:30 p.m. during winter, from October until the end of March. In summer, from April to the end of September, it stays open until 7 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to visit the Lotus Temple. There's no cost to do so and donations are not required. However, the temple's growing popularity as a tourist attraction means it does get very crowded! This is the case particularly on weekends and national holidays. When it's busy, you can expect to wait in line for an hour (or more) to go inside the Prayer Hall. Therefore, if you're not intending to meditate or pray, you may want to skip it. The interior is notably plain and unadorned, without altars or religious idols, and photography isn't allowed.

A paved pathway will take you from the main gate of the temple complex to the base of the temple. You'll need to remove your shoes there and carry them in the bag provided. Follow the flight of stairs up to the platform, from where you can enter the Prayer Hall. Volunteers will guide you inside and provide a brief overview of the Baha’i faith.

Short prayer services, involving the chanting or reading of prayers from various religions, are held periodically throughout the day at 10 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Other than this, there are no religious sermons or rituals, and visitors must remain silent while in the hall. It's a serene experience.

Upon leaving the Prayer Hall, collect a free pass to the Information Center and stop by it on the way back to the parking lot. Do note that children under the age of 12 aren't permitted to enter.

What to See

If you think the Lotus Temple looks similar to the iconic Opera House in Sydney, Australia, you're not alone! It's an extremely common observation. Yet, unlike the Opera House, the outer shells of the temple form the petals of a lotus. There are 27 of these "petals", made out of concrete and covered in marble pieces. The lotus design was chosen because of its symbolic importance to many world religions, including Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam.

In accordance with Baha’i scriptures, the Lotus Temple is a circular shape with nine sides and nine entrances. The Baha’i faith reveres the mystical properties of the number nine (nine is associated with perfection because it's the highest single number. It's also the numerical value of Baha in the Arabic alphabet). The temple is encircled by nine ponds as well. You'll be able to see them after climbing the stairs at the base.

Many visitors agree that the temple's beauty is best appreciated from the outside due to the stark interior of the Prayer Hall. However, what's remarkable about this cavernous white enclosure is that it has no pillars or beams. There is seating for up to 2,500 people and a glass roof that lets in natural light.

The temple is particularly captivating at sunset, when its exterior is evocatively illuminated.

Those who are curious about the Baha’i faith and Lotus Temple can learn a lot from the educational exhibits at the expansive Information Center. This building, which opened in 2003, was specially designed by the temple's architect to address the many questions visitors have. It's like a museum and it's worth spending some time there to gain a deeper understanding of the religion. In addition to the photos and text that are on display, insightful short films are screened every 20-30 minutes.

What Else to Do Nearby

The Lotus Temple is ideally visited along with other attractions in south Delhi. Trendy Hauz Khas urban village is one of Delhi's cool neighborhoods , and is a popular place to eat and drink. Its modernity contrasts with some fascinating medieval ruins dating back to the 13th century.

Dilli Haat is a famous tourist market where artisans come and sell their wares. It also has cultural performances and Indian cuisine from various states. If you're keen on shopping, there are other top local markets in the area . Head to Nehru Place for electronics, Sarojini Nagar for designer export surplus clothes, and Lajpat Nagar for inexpensive Indian clothes or to get mehendi (henna) applied to your hands.

Further south in Mehrauli, Qutub Minar is the tallest brick minaret in the world and a 13th century UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are hundreds of monuments from the 10th century to the British era dotted throughout the forest at sprawling 200-acre Mehrauli Archeological Park, adjacent. Nearby Dastkar Nature Bazaar is one of the best places in Delhi to buy unique handicrafts.

Welcome to the official website of the Bahá’í House of Worship, popularly known as the Lotus Temple located in New Delhi, India. Like eight Houses of Worship around the world, this magnificent structure stands for t he principle of the oneness of humankind. People of all racial, religious, national backgrounds, are welcomed to pray and meditate within its precincts. It is a collective centre of society to promote cordial affection where everyone is held in its embrace as equals. This edifice is dedicated to the one God, the Creator of all humanity and of the entire universe.

The Writings of the Bahá’í Faith maintain that God is unknowable in His Essence and throughout the ages, He has sent a succession of Divine Messengers , Avatars or Manifestations of God, to educate and guide humanity.

The House of Worship highlights the importance of prayer in the life of individuals and communities. It provides a space for expressing that desire to communicate with our Creator through prayer that is conceived as “the essential spiritual conversation of the soul with its Maker, direct and without intermediation” . It further underscores the significance of collective worship as a fundamental element of a pattern of community life that is spiritually and materially prosperous. Furthermore, devotional services at the House of Worship are universal in character, welcoming all to be uplifted through opening their hearts and minds to the Words of God.

While worship forms a key tenet of the House of Worship, service to humanity is considered an outward expression of the inner transformation that worship brings about. This service is expressed through deeds carried out in the spirit of service for the betterment of humanity; communal worship in homes, neighborhoods and villages; an educational process that builds the capacity of individuals to serve others; and, through a pattern of community life embodying the principle of the oneness of humanity. In this manner, a House of Worship is envisioned to become a centre for social, scientific, educational and humanitarian services, living up to its title of the “dawning-place of the mention of God” .

This Bahá’í House of Worship, dedicated to public worship in 1986, is the property of and is owned by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’í s of India.

About Lotus Temple Delhi

Lotus temple Delhi is a Bahai house of Worship which is also known as Kamal Mandir. It is one of the seven Major Bahai’s temple in the world. Known for it’s Lotus Like Design, it was built in 1986 and since that it is fascinating visitors with it’s Structural Beauty. The Lush Greenery around the temple add further to its beauty. The Building comprises of 27 free standing marble clad which looks like petals which arranged in bundle of three from nine sides which has nine Doors which is over 34 meters of height that opens into central Hall which has a seating capacity of over 1300 people.

Lotus Temple is open to people of all religions. The temple is not dedicated to any one Deity, but it stands on the principle of Unity, Peace, Meditation and Humanity among people of different countries, religion and race. The Lotus shaped Design of the temple also means the same as Lotus Flower is commonly used in many religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and others. It has been recognised and appreciated throughout the world. The Lotus temple Delhi is visited by around 10,000 people on a daily basis which makes it one of the most visited tourist Attractions in the world.

Architecture Of Lotus Temple Delhi

Lotus Temple Delhi was built by the Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba. He has won many awards for this architectural masterpiece. The temple is designed in the shape of Lotus, as the flower Lotus is often associated with Purity, sacredness, spirituality and knowledge. Lotus has a spiritual significance in India. Another reason is that, the flower “Lotus” is common to many Major religions of the world and hence it represents harmony and oneness.

Lotus temple is built with Marble in the shape of Half opened Lotus with 27 Petals arranged in bundle of three from nine sides. The nine doors of the temple opens to the central hall which has a seating capacity of 1300 and can accommodate around 2500 people. The temple has been designed in such a way that it didn’t need any external light for the prayer hall. The light gets filtered through the inner fold of the Lotus petal and spreads throughout the hall acting as a Natural Light. The roof is made up of Glass and steel to provide protection from rain and dust and allowing light to pass.

The temple is spread in over 26 acres of area and has nine beautiful poles and Lush greenery which adds to the beauty and glory of the entire place.

There are no altars or Pulpits inside the Lotus temple which is a common feature of all Bahai house of Worship. The Temple does not have a picture, Statue and Images on Display. A Glorious feature of the temple is the nine pools of the water surrounding the petals which gives an impression of Half blossomed Lotus in a water body and the whole structure looks mind-blowing at night when light gets on. The temple generates 120 kW of energy out of 500 kW of it’s total electricity use by Solar panels on Building which saves Rs 1,20,000 of temple every month. It is the first temple in Delhi to use Solar Panel.

The temple was designed by Fariborz Sahba while the structural design was done by Flint and Neill which is a UK Firm. The Lotus Temple Delhi’s construction work was done by Larsen & Turbo Limited ECC Construction company and took around 10 years to complete at a cost of 10 million Dollars. There were the team of around 800 engineers, technicians, artisans and workers who help in constructing the temple. It took a lot of hard work to construct the petals of the lotus flower which took continuous work of 48 hours to avoid any construction Joints.

The Lotus Temple being one of the seven Baha’i Houses of Worship has won numerous architectural awards and has also been subsequently featured in many newspapers and magazines. Later in the year 2001, a report declared Lotus Temple as one of the most visited buildings in the world.

ARCHITECTURE

The construction of the splendid Lotus Temple took nearly 10 years before it finally got the shape of a lotus. Entering the temple complex tourists can witness that the building is composed of white marbles, cement, dolomite and sand with around nine crystal clear pools dotted over it. Also, tourists can witness the 27 freestanding petals that are made of marble. Also, there are nine reflecting pools that encompass the temple from outside that appears to be even more beautiful during the dusk. The temple has the capacity to accommodate nearly 2500 people and has nine doors that open in a central hall.

VISITING TIMINGS

The Lotus Temple is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM during the winter season and 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM during the summer season. The temple is closed on Monday.

The entry to Lotus Temple is free.

Although the Lotus Temple can be visited all throughout the year, considering the winter season between November and February would be an ideal choice as the weather remains pleasant and favourable to explore the complex with less humidity.

It was designed by an Iranian architecture FariborzSahba who currently resides in Canada. The temple has been designed with 27 free-standing marble clods which are uniquely set together to form a nine side Lotus flower that is larger than life.

The Lotus temple has about nine entrance gates and all lead to one central hall which has a height of over 40 meters and is easily known to make the seat for 1300 people while accommodating about 2500 people altogether!

Spread on an area of 26 acres the monument the amazing white look from the outside comes from the use of marbles which are sourced from Penteli Mountain in Greece. The temple is surrounded by nine ponds and gardens and is today a pride of Delhi with the maximum number of tourists.

The Lotus Temple is a Baha'i temple, also known as Mashriqul-Adhkar, which was opened to the general public in December 1986. Like many different BahÃ¡'Ã temples, this one is also committed to the unity of religions and humanity. Followers of all religions gather here to make wishes, worship and read their scriptures. The Lotus Temple in Delhi is considered one of the seven primary BahÃ¡'Ã houses of worship located internationally and the simplest in Asia.

Architecture of Lotus Temple

Surrounded by lush green advanced gardens, this lotus-inspired structure is spread over 26 acres of land. Made of white marble procured from the Balkan nation, it consists of twenty-seven petals within the independent state. These petals are arranged in teams of 3 to give the structure a nine-sided circular appearance. There are 9 entrances that host a large central hall, which is about forty meters long.

The temple has a crowd of 1300 people and it can seat 2500 people at a time. There are no altars or mausoleums within the Lotus Temple, which may be a common feature of all BahÃ¡'Ã houses of worship.
An attractive feature of the temple is that there are 9 pools of water located around the petals. They provide the impression of a semi-blooming lotus during a water body as well as the entire structure looks spectacular once within a night.
The temple was designed by a collaborative Iranian-American builder, Fariborz Sahba, while the structural style was created by the UK firm Flint & Neil.
The Computer Code Construction Cluster of Larsen & Toubro Limited undertook the development of the temple and completed it at a cost of ten million greenbacks.
