Travel Supermarket Dublin
Dublin, home to the world’s oldest continually running Travel Supermarket, has seen its fair share of changes over millenia. From the days of its first inhabitant to the swirling of a vibrant metropolis with a pulsating energy, Dublin is no stranger to travel. Visitors from all over the world come to explore the city’s rich tapestry of culture, heritage and nightlife. With so much to offer, nowadays it’s no wonder why the Travel Supermarket craze has taken root in the city and grown rapidly over recent years.
Unlike other normal supermarkets that stock basic food and other household items, Travel Supermarkets focus on everything a traveller needs to make their stay in Dublin more comfortable. From ready-made meals, drinks, snacks, souvenirs, travel tickets, currency exchange and even language guide books, Travel Supermarkets provide the perfect one-stop-shop for all of your travelling needs.
The history of Travel Supermarkets in Dublin is fascinating. It is believed the first Travel Supermarket was established almost 200 years ago, when a man named Joseph Butler opened a store in a building, originally built in the 1760s. His goal was to create a place which would provide everything a traveller could need before or during their journey. With the success of Mr. Butler’s store, Travel Supermarkets soon became a preferred option among tourists and locals alike and soon started popping up all across the city.
Today, Dublin is filled with Travel Supermarkets selling all the necessary items and services for a perfect trip. From maps and brochures to stationery items, financial services, toiletries, books and even clothing. All of these are conveniently located in one place, so you can save yourself time and energy. There are also several Travel Supermarkets in the city which specialise in travel tickets and currency exchange.
Moreover, the city has several well-renowned Travel Supermarkets which provide an array of services such as healthcare, laundry, parking, library and even travel insurance services. These are designed to make your life easier while in Dublin and provide an easier transition for international travellers.
Another great feature of most Travel Supermarkets in Dublin is that many offer the chance to save money on travel essentials. You may come across discounts on certain items, like snacks and drinks, as well as vouchers and promotions. Therefore, you can enjoy a worry-free trip through Dublin while still making sure you get the best value for your money.
All in all, visiting a Travel Supermarket in Dublin is a great way to save time and money. Whether you’re looking for tickets and travel essentials, or for health and financial services, Travel Supermarkets will provide exactly what you need. Furthermore, the historic stores are perfect for exploring, as you can stumble upon amazing stories of the city’s past while discovering the fascinating array of products and services it has to offer.
Travel Supermarket Services
The stores of the Travel Supermarket in Dublin offer a wide array of services, which include convenient financial and language conversion services, transportation planning and ticket purchasing, health services, and even insurance cover. Both locals and visitors can benefit from this array of services, and it has become a great asset for the city and its growing tourism industry.
The Travel Supermarket’s main mission is to offer the highest quality services for its customers, and they put time and effort into making sure they meet the needs of everyone who comes through their door. It doesn’t matter what you need to get done, the Travel Supermarket has your back.

Additionally, the bilingual staff members have a vast amount of expertise and can help you with any questions you have regarding your destination.
Non-Travel Services
In addition to the travel services mentioned above, the Travel Supermarket in Dublin also provides a range of other services that are of particular interest to locals and visitors. These include laundry, parking, library and even health services.
Whether you need a reliable place to park your car near the city center, or want to clean your clothes, there are convenient solutions offered by the Travel Supermarket. Furthermore, the supermarket also offers medical advice, such as general checkups, vaccinations and other medical treatments. This is especially useful for those who have suffered from unexpected illnesses during their travels.
The Travel Supermarket also offers book and magazine subscriptions, which are an ideal choice for those who want to read up about their destination beforehand. Additionally, visitors and locals can take advantage of the high-quality library services provided by the stores, which have a wide range of books and magazines in different languages.
When it comes to keeping track of your expenses, the Travel Supermarket staff can help you develop a budget and make sure you stay within your planned spending limits. Furthermore, their staff can provide comfortable transfers to and from the airport and other locations. They can also offer guidance in finding the best attractions in the city.
Travel Supermarket’s Volunteers
One of the great things about the Travel Supermarket in Dublin is that it is staffed by kindly volunteers. These volunteers who come from all walks of life, bring their knowledge and experience to the Travel Supermarket and aid both local and international visitors alike.
The volunteers are always on hand to help customers with their queries. Whether the customer is looking for currency exchange services, medical advice, or just some local tips on the city, the staff are always willing to listen and they are always eager to share their knowledge.
The volunteers also have several dedicated classes that are aimed at helping visitors learn more about the culture and history of the city. They also provide additional assistance in planning a trip, such as suggesting the best routes and attractions to visit.
The volunteers at the Travel Supermarket inspire the local people of Dublin to become more engaged in the tourism industry. Their stories of travelling around the world and their passion for helping others are a source of great pride for the city.
As one of the oldest and most beloved institutions in Dublin, the Travel Supermarket has always been understood as a source for both local and foreign travellers alike. From the moment Joseph Butler opened the first store in the 1760s, it has become an integral part of the city’s culture. It has seen its fair share of changes and improvements, but its original ethos – providing everything a traveller needs to make their stay in Dublin more comfortable – remains unchanged.
Today, the Travel Supermarket is a thriving institution that continues to grow in popularity. It offers an extensive array of services for international and local travellers alike, including currency exchange, language conversion, health and financial services, and much more. Furthermore, it is staffed by friendly, knowledgeable volunteers who are always willing to help.
Therefore, if you’re planning a trip to Dublin, visiting a Travel Supermarket is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do. It’s an excellent way to ensure you make the most out of your visit, and its array of products and services will help you save time and money.

Unfamiliar shops, brands, and products make the relatively simple task of grocery shopping a real challenge. This guide will provide you an overview of what is available in Ireland and what to expect.
Essential grocery shopping information:
- Supermarket Opening hours
Sale of Alcohol Laws in Ireland
Convenience stores in ireland, supermarkets in ireland.
The range of supermarkets and their range of stock is much more limited in Ireland than you find in other countries such as the UK, USA and Australia. They are generally quite small in size but in the suburban areas they have much larger superstores.
You will need to pack your own groceries, which can be frustrating if you are used to being in a country where supermarkets pack them for you! Sometimes there will be a person raising funds for a charity assisting you to pack – so you will be obliged to put some coins into their fundraising bucket.
- Cream cheese is sold as soft cheese
- Risoni is sold as orzo
- Flour used for bread making is sold as strong flour
- Laundry detergent is usually labelled as ‘biological’ or ‘non-biological’. Confused which one is best for you and your family? Learn more about the pros and cons of biological and non-biological washing detergent.
- Ireland has a plastic bag tax, so unless you want to pay for a bag, then remember to bring your own reusable shopping bag with you.

Supermarket Opening hours
Many supermarkets are open 24/7 or have long opening hours like 08:00am – 10.00pm everyday. You can access individual store opening times on their websites.
Liquor is sold in supermarkets, however, off-licence sale of alcohol is only permitted between the hours of 10.30am and 10.00pm on weekdays and 12.30pm to 10.00pm on Sundays or St Patrick’s Day. Sales are not permitted on Christmas Day. This does not affect supermarket opening hours as they just block access to their alcoholic products outside of these permitted times.
As well as the larger supermarkets, there are also small supermarkets and convenience stores in Ireland. These shops stock a small range of essential products. They are typically more expensive than shopping at the larger supermarkets. The stores include:
In order to use the trolleys at most supermarkets you will need to use a €1 or €2 coin. However, there special key ring tokens you can purchase to use in their place. The stores also provide small and large baskets that can be used without a token.
I have noted which stores offer home delivery and/or click and collect – a free service where you can purchase your products online and then choose which store you wish to collect them from.
German based chain, very similar to Lidl.
Products: Limited range, with a focus on staple items and a ‘no-frills’ approach to store layout. Mostly stock their own range of brands, however, they stock more branded products than Lidl. Their beauty product range, Lacura, has a cult following. It’s famous for beating its more expensive rivals by winning the best intensive anti-ageing serum. They also sell a lot of copy cat beauty products that emulate the more expensive luxury brands. Their Lunex tampons are a real bargain as well. Here’s my list of favourite Aldi products I can’t live without .
Similar to Lidl, in addition to its standard items Aldi has weekly special offers. Some of them are more expensive products such as electronics, tools, appliances, computers, through to cheap clothing, toys, flowers and gifts. Specials have strict limits on quantities and are available for one week or until they run out. You can sign up to their email newsletters to get an early preview of the specials.
Payment types: Cash, debit cards and also Visa/MasterCard with no additional charge.
Customer loyalty scheme: No.
Online shopping: No.

Dunnes Stores (AKA Dunnes)
Small Irish based retail chain. Not all of the stores contain a supermarket, so check their website for locations.
It is not always obvious that the store contains a supermarket. Usually the supermarket department is down in the basement or the back of the store – so you usually have to walk through their clothing department to get to it.
Products: Dunnes has a reasonable selection of products to choose from. They also stock their own branded products. The stores usually contain clothing, bedding and home wares but each store can vary what they sell, so check their website first to avoid disappointment.
Payment types: Cash, debit cards and Visa/MasterCard with no additional charge.
Customer loyalty scheme: Yes, called VALUEclub .
Online shopping: Not for their grocery department.
Website: dunnesstores.com
Dutch multinational retail chain. Small convenience style supermarkets.
Products: A small selection of branded products.
Customer loyalty scheme: Yes, called SuperEasy Rewards .
Website: eurospar.ie
German based chain, very similar to Aldi.
Products: Limited range, with a focus on staple items and a ‘no-frills’ approach to store layout. They stock their own products as well as branded products. Similar to Aldi, in addition to its standard items Lidl has weekly special offers, some of them on more expensive products such as electronics, tools, appliances, computers, through to cheap clothing, toys, flowers and gifts. Marks & Spencer (AKA M&S)
UK based retail chain. Not all of the stores contain a supermarket, so check their website for locations. It is not always obvious that the store contains a supermarket, often it is in back of the store.
Products: Known as a luxury food store, they also sell a large range of pre-prepared food. They also sell niche items that you may not find in other stores.
Online shopping: They offer ‘Food Boxes’ with essential basic items that can be delivered or collected.
Website: marksandspencer.ie
Irish based supermarket chain.
Products: Supervalu stock their own brand of products as well as branded products.
Payment types: Cash, debit cards and Visa/MasterCard with no additional charge.
Customer loyalty scheme: Yes, called Real Rewards .
Online shopping: Yes. They offer both home delivery and click and collect.
Website: supervalu.ie
UK based chain store.
Products: Tesco has a broader selection of products to choose from. They stock their own brand of products alongside branded products. Some of the larger stores also sell their cheap clothing range and home wares, electronics, garden items etc…
Payment types: Cash, debit cards and Visa/MasterCard with no additional charge.
Customer loyalty scheme: Yes, called Clubcard . You can collect points not only with your grocery shopping, but also at other Tesco businesses and business partners.

You would need to check the store opening hours on their websites
Cynthia S Connelly
We will be traveling to Ireland in late summer and I am interested in if I will be able to buy the products I use once we get there Shampoo, soap, hair products, ect. I think buying them there will be easier than trying to get it all through TSA. Please let me know
Hi Cynthia S Connelly, I don’t know what country you are from or what products you use, so can’t answer your question. But I suggest you look on the supermarket websites that let you shop online such as Tesco and you can see if they sell them. Also, you can check online Irish stores and pharmacies and on Amazon (check the product is shipped to Republic of Ireland).
Are there any shops that will send/DHL fresh food to Germany?
Sadly, they don’t.
Everett Wilkins
question: I live in USA. my son and his Irish wife and 3 children live in Ireland. Is there an on line site in Ireland that sells things like chocolates or other treats that I could buy something and have it sent to my kids in Ireland??
Hi Everett Wilkins, most shops in Ireland you can purchase items online. Check out my Irish shopping guide – most of these shops are chain stores in Ireland and have shops online you can purchase items from. My personal favourite for chocolate is Butlers Chocolates. There are also a number of department stores where you can purchase a large variety of items from their online stores. Chapters is a great bookstore and books are quite cheap in Ireland as they don’t charge taxes on them. Avoca is another of my favourites – probably best for older kids or adults. You can also purchase a lot of Irish things from Amazon .
Hi, you also can order at Amazon.co.uk they have candy bars & snacks as well!!

Not what I expected
I specifically avoided meet and greet as I like to keep my keys with me. At the time of booking I did not realise that maple parking insist on having the keys otherwise I’d have stuck with the official airport parking which was not that much dearer. More clarity required when choosing options. Maple parking were ok but couldn’t remember where they’d left the car, which wasted time on a freezing cold evening trying to find it and then gave us the wrong code for the exit. Next time will book direct with Heathrow parking

Top 10 Supermarket Retail Chains In Ireland
Ireland 's economy was one of the fastest to bounce back after the COVID-19 pandemic, seeing 9.5% growth in modified domestic demand (MDD) in 2022, however the story of 2023 has largely involved keeping inflatio n at a reasonable level.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 5.1% between October 2022 and October 2023, data from Ireland's Central Statistics Office found, down from an annual increase of 6.4% in the 12 months to September 2023. On a month-on-month basis, consumer prices were up by 0.3%.
While hotels, restaurants, and cultural establishments have seen the highest increase in prices on a year-on-year basis, the grocery sector has also had to battle continued inflation – the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages was up 7.0% in the year to October 2023.
At the same time, consumer confidence appears to be on the increase, with the Credit Union Consumer Sentiment Index rising to 61.9 in November 2023, up from from 60.4 in October – the latter having been a six-month low of the index. The index dropped as low as 42.1 in September 2022.
"It may be that small improvements in confidence in each of the past two months at least tentatively point towards the possibility of a more positive trend in Irish consumer sentiment and spending over end-year and into early 2024," the report's authors said.
Elsewhere, in December, Kantar suggested that Irish grocery sales would hit a record level over Christmas 2023 , although this is partly driven by inflation levels.
Here's an overview of the top ten supermarket retail chains in Ireland, according to their most recently-available full-year turnover. All data is supplied by Retail-Index.

Anthony Insolia, Who Led the Expansion of Newsday, Dies at 98
The Long Island paper won seven Pulitzer Prizes during his tenure, and he was a top editor for the Arizona Project, which investigated a reporter’s murder.
By Adam Nossiter
Anthony Insolia, a down-to-earth former editor of Newsday who presided over that Long Island newspaper’s expansion and several big investigative projects, died on Saturday in Philadelphia. He was 98.
His death, in a hospice, was confirmed by his stepdaughter, Robin Ireland.
Mr. Insolia was the editor of Newsday from late 1977 until his retirement 10 years later, a period when the newspaper, a tabloid owned then by the Times Mirror Co., won seven Pulitzer Prizes, expanded its foreign reporting staff to multiple far-flung bureaus and solidified its reputation for hard-hitting, streetwise journalism close to home.
But it was an undertaking a year before he took charge of Newsday that was among his most significant journalistic accomplishments: what came to be known as the Arizona Project, a pioneering effort in collaborative journalism across many news organizations.
Mr. Insolia, who was Newsday’s managing editor at the time, was the story editor on the project, which was mounted in response to the murder of an Arizona reporter, Don Bolles, in 1976.
Mr. Bolles was fatally injured when his car was blown up in a Phoenix parking lot in June 1976 as he was investigating ties between Arizona politicians, businesses and organized crime. A then-fledgling organization, Investigative Reporters and Editors , or I.R.E., assembled a team of 38 journalists from 28 news organizations under the leadership of the Newsday reporter and editor Robert W. Greene to look into the circumstances of the killing and, as he put it, to make people “think twice” about killing journalists.
The project produced a series of 23 articles in 1977, all appearing in cooperating newspapers across the country, including The Indianapolis Star, The Tulsa Tribune, The Miami Herald, The Boston Globe and Newsday. Carrying on Mr. Bolles’ work in trying to demonstrate those mob ties, the series “shook the Arizona establishment to its foundations,” Ed DeLaney, the former counsel to I.R.E., recalled in a 2008 article in the organization’s bulletin.
Mr. Insolia had also been Newsday’s managing editor for a 1974 project, “The Heroin Trail,” which traced the flow of heroin from Turkey’s poppy fields to suburban Long Island. It won the Pulitzer for public service.
“He was very granular, but he had big thoughts and dreams,” said Jim Mulvaney, who headed several foreign bureaus under Mr. Insolia. “He was a fan of good reporting. He would come over and point out when you had done something good.”
The opposite was true as well. Mr. Insolia was known for his uncompromising standards and “a relentless honesty that often crossed the line into bluntness and earned him the nickname ‘Tony Insult,’” Robert F. Keeler wrote in the 1990 book “Newsday: A Candid History of the Respectable Tabloid.” He credited Mr. Insolia with “impeccable news judgment and relentless attention to detail.”
In a 1986 interview on C-SPAN , Mr. Insolia proudly discussed his recent hiring of the New York Times columnist Sydney Schanberg to be a columnist for New York Newsday, the newspaper’s New York City offshoot ( it was closed in 1995, as were the paper’s foreign bureaus eventually). Mr. Schanberg had left The Times after it discontinued his column in the wake of his public criticism of the newspaper’s coverage of the Westway project, the proposed highway on Manhattan’s West Side.
Asked if Mr. Schanberg would encounter similar difficulties at Newsday, Mr. Insolia gruffly replied, “These pages are here to represent as many points of view as possible.”
In the interview, he expressed absolute confidence in the future of newspapers and in their necessity, a judgment that predated the internet era. “The meat of a newspaper is explanatory,” Mr. Insolia said, adding, “I think people are reading newspapers, and they’re reading them carefully.”
Anthony Edward Insolia was born on Feb. 7, 1926, in Tuckahoe, N.Y., in Westchester County. His father, Salvatore Insolia, a Sicilian immigrant, was a presser in New York’s garment district; his mother, Pasqualina (Beladino) Insolia, was a seamstress.
He attended schools in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and was drafted into the Army in 1944, assigned to Tempelhof Airport in Berlin as a ground station radio operator.
The first in his family to earn a college degree, Mr. Insolia graduated from New York University in 1949. He went to work as a reporter for The Yonkers Times while also holding a job at a Gristedes supermarket. He moved to Newsday as a reporter in the fall of 1955 and remained there for more than 30 years.
In addition to his stepdaughter, Ms. Ireland, he is survived by his second wife, Jean Insolia; his daughters, Anne Smyers and Janet Insolia; his son, Robert; his brother, Richard; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a stepson, David Uris.
“If there is a human being that was temperamentally designed to be a journalist, it was him,” said Ms. Ireland, a former journalist herself who recalled his tough honesty when she showed him her articles. Mr. Insolia’s catchphrase, she recalled, was: “Nobody’s going to tell you how great you are. You’re going to have to do it on your own.”
