The Peace River is a river in the southwestern part of the Florida peninsula, in the U.S.A.. It originates at the juncture of Saddle Creek and Peace Creek northeast of Bartow in Polk County and flows south through Hardee County to Arcadia in DeSoto County and then southwest into the Charlotte Harbor estuary at Port Charlotte in Charlotte County. The river was called Rio de la Paz ( River of Peace ) on 16th century Spanish charts. It appeared as Peas Creek or Pease Creek on later maps. Peace River

By Capt. Dennis S. Kirk

The Indians had a name – Pease River – for the 100-mile-long winding, slowly-flowing river. From her headwaters of the great green swamp (between Tampa and Orlando) through Polk, Hardee, DeSoto and Charlotte counties, she winds her way to Charlotte Harbor, finally emptying into the Gulf of Mexico.

In the days before the settlers and Europeans appeared, the Indians lived off the land. Along the shores of this river were abundant cow peas and black-eyed peas, giving the name “Pease Creek” its origin. As the settlers moved further south, tensions arose between the newcomers and Indians. This resulted in the Seminole Wars of the 1800s. Both sides decided this was not good, and formed a “treaty of peace” using the river as a dividing line. This put the settlers on one side, and the Indians on the other. The name was recorded in early journals as the “Rio de la Paz” or, as it is presently called, the Peace River.

There are many features of the Peace River which make her unique. Being fed by the green swamp and many tributaries that flow through cypress and grasslands, the decaying leaves and other vegetation give off tannin, or tannic acid. In small quantities it is quite harmless, and those that drink tea will attest to this fact.

In the early days, bucketfuls of this water were boiled, which left a strong solution that animal skins were treated with. This makes hide soft and preserved and this process, still in use today, is called “tanning” leather.

The main industries along the river – indeed throughout Florida – were cattle ranching, logging and citrus: logging because the railroads and towns were being built, and the cattle to feed people. Still a major business for generations, the early cowboys would control the herds by cracking whips as they rode the horses accustomed to their task. The term Florida “Cracker” today refers to these people and native Florida folks born in the early days

Another big industry was phosphate mining. This mineral in the earth was used in laundry detergent and soaps, because when agitated in water it creates suds, which clean the clothes. The main use today for phosphate is for fertilizer.

This mineral was thought to be in the river bottom along the lower Peace River, and many towns were established along the river because of this find. The dredges would scoop up the mud, sand and phosphate pebbles. These were loaded onto barges, shipped down the Peace River, through Charlotte Harbor and out to Boca Grande. Boca Grande had the largest phosphate plant in the world up until the 1950s.

One of these old towns, today a ghost town, was founded in 1860 by John Cross, a businessman from England. He thought that being located on the Peace River with access to Charlotte Harbor, the Gulf of Mexico and different ports of the world, this town would be a great seaport. Being from England, he named it after a large sea port there – Liverpool. The town was booming in the late 1800s, but the mining industry found that the phosphate was not in the river further inland.

In the 1920s the mining companies opened plants inland by Bartow, and were better serviced by the newly-built railroads. Since most of the folks in these waterfront towns worked with the mining of phosphate, they followed the work and all of the towns were abandoned. The old town of Liverpool is still visible today, in ruins, if you tour the Peace River and know where to look.

Another feature of the “Rio de la Paz” is that for the first 75 miles it is all fresh water. Fish, such as largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish are abundant for the fresh water fisherman. The lower part of the river is tidal, bringing saltwater to mix with the fresh as the river flows southward. This mixing creates “brackish” water. At times of heavy rain, the fresh water flows all the way to Charlotte Harbor. During the dry season or drought, there is a higher salinity. This brings the saltwater fish upriver, and snook, redfish, mullet, drum, snapper, trout and even tarpon can be found in odd places.

By far the best feature of the Peace River is the pristine beauty that is prevalent as you travel the route of Indians, settlers and pioneers. Unchanged for hundreds of years you can see alligators, manatee, otters, nesting birds such as eagles and osprey, lots of flowers such as iris and orchids – and too much to mention here.

Whether you travel by canoe, kayak, in your own boat or with a local tour captain, you will be delighted and enlightened as you see this part of real Florida.

Capt. Dennis Kirk has been traveling the Peace River since 1979. Part of the Nav-A-Gator (a riverfront restaurant and marina), he operates Peace River Tours daily from the Nav-A-Gator. The Nav-A-Gator is located just off Kings Highway in DeSoto County. For additional information, contact (941) 627-FISH.

On this trip you will see lots of wildlife and beautiful old Florida!   We will cruise down the river by airboat to our best fossil locations. You will enjoy the day in the comfortable water digging and sifting for Florida's prehistoric past.

Our fossil excursion starts at 9 AM and ends at 4pm. You are guaranteed to go home with lots of goodies and a memory that lasts a lifetime. Until our larger boat is finished being built, we can only accommodate small groups of 2. Which are great for husband and wife. Father-son, father-daughter. Make sure to pack light and bring some snacks and whatever other drinks you would like to have on your trip.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR TRIP

We understand expectations are HIGH!  Why wouldn't they be?  Our EXPERIENCED STAFF is here to help with your entire trip!  We ask everyone to be on time for your tour DEPARTURE.  Once we meet at the launch location Captain John will load your group aboard our private airboat.  On our way upriver to the hunting grounds be sure to enjoy all the scenic wildlife the Peace River has to offer.  Keep your eyes out for wildlife, including beautiful birds, deer, alligators, basking turtles as well as Osceola turkeys.  ALSO, THE OCCASIONAL BALD EAGLE!  The beautiful natural lime rock high embankment of the Peace River is a product of nature's masterpiece.   The fauna and flora growing along this remote area takes you back in time.  The airboat ride is a very neat and enjoyable ride for all ages.  Once we arrive to the hunting grounds, we will offload your group into the shallow waters of the Peace River.  Along with our digging tools and sifters that we provide you with for your hunting trip.  We are targeting the gravel beds on the bottom of the river.  Expect to be digging and sifting in knee to waste deep water with our custom digging scoops.  So, make sure you wear your water shoes or (dive booties).  Please no flip flops.  We run each scoop of gravel through our sifting screens to wash out the sand and sort out the gravel and pick out the fossils.   Either Captain John or one of our guides will be there to help you with questions and IDs of what you're finding.  We supply you with our fossil collecting bags to store your finds while hunting.   Alot of customers ask, what about alligators?  Generally speaking, alligators are natural inhabitants of the Peace River.  We see them quite often on the airboat ride.  However, we usually don't see them at our digging locations.  Once the dig tour time is up, we will go through you're finds and help out with any more questions.  We are going to educate you as much as possible on the history of Florida's prehistoric past.  We will then re-board the airboat and head back towards the boat ramp for another enjoyable airboat experience.  Complete time frame on every tour is minimum 4 hours.  Sometimes a little longer depending on each group.

WHAT TO EXPECT TO FIND

Expect to find tons of bones from our last ice age.  As well as many different species of smaller shark's teeth.  Frequently find Ice Age horse teeth and other fossilized mammal teeth from prehistoric elephants like the Colombian Mammoth.  Fragments and tooth sections from these giant animals are fairly common to find.  Giant armadillo scoots from VW sized prehistoric animals also hits the sifters.  These are known as Glyptodon.  Glyptodon Scoots are incredible fossils, one of our favorites!  Llama, Bison, Sloth, and Deer teeth are some other cool fossils that frequently show up in our sifters.  Fossilized Alligator and Crocodile teeth are another fairly common find that may end up in your sifter, so keep your eyes out!  You also find armor plates from these large scaley reptiles.  They make some very neat conversation pieces.  Fossilized Land Tortoise, and Fossilized Turtle shell fragments are very common finds.  Occasionally you will find artifacts from ancient man on our trips.  Including arrow heads and spears.  However, with Florida state laws any artifact found must be returned to the river.  Tons of prehistoric whale and dolphin bones, teeth and their ear bones also pop up.  Fossilized stingray mouth plates, dermal scoots and barbs pop up regularly.  As well as the manatees ancient relative, the Dugong.  Lots of heavy (very dense) rib bones from these large animals are frequent finds on the river.  Last but not least.  The largest PREDATOR of all time, the megalodon shark!  Megalodon shark teeth hit the sifters every week.  They are a common find on our trips.  With a little luck you can surely go home with a 2.5-million-year-old + megalodon shark tooth!

Newport's 'World Peace Bell' moving to make way for new developments

(WKRC, File)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Newport's "World Peace Bell" is moving, and its old home is getting quite a major facelift.

Work begins to transform the site of the "World Peace Bell" in Newport. Crews are starting demolition to make way for a new development that will including two hotels, offices and a parking garage on the two acre site at Monmouth, York, Fourth and Fifth streets.
