How to Book Your Dream Vacation With Credit Card Points

If you’re dreaming of first-class flights halfway across the world, bungalows above crystal-clear water, fine dining at Michelin-rated restaurants, and world-class cocktails, you’re not alone. These trips can come with a hefty price tag, into the tens of thousands of dollars when booking with cash. But if you’re a points and miles enthusiast, you know there are ways to get a fantastic deal on a flight or five-star resort — thanks to your credit card perks.

Meet the Expert

I spoke with Courtney Alev, consumer financial advocate at Credit Karma, and Dave Grossman, CEO and founder of Your Best Credit Cards, to compile a guide on booking a once-in-a-lifetime vacation using credit card points. 

Using credit card points to offset travel costs is nothing new. According to a recent Credit Karma survey, over half of Gen Z respondents (54 percent) rely on credit card points and rewards to pay for travel expenses. Additionally, nearly half of Gen Z respondents (49 percent) use credit card “hacks” to maximize their points and rewards. It’s clear that Gen Z — along with frequent travelers across all demographics — has a strong desire to see the world but is looking for creative ways to save money. 

“Personally, I’ve flown Emirates and Etihad first class (both have an onboard shower), Singapore Airlines first class, Japan Airlines first class, Qantas first class, Air France first class, Lufthansa first class (they have a lounge in Frankfurt for first-class customers in its own terminal with private security), and Qatar’s famous QSuites (business class),” says Grossman. “Every single one of these flights has been with points and miles, paying only taxes and fees.”

Understanding Points Programs 

There are three main categories of points and miles: hotel loyalty program points , airline frequent flier miles , and credit card points. There’s a lot of overlap between these categories, so knowing what you want from a rewards program is important. 

Hotel points and airline miles work in similar ways. You earn a certain number of points per hotel stay or flight. Most hotels and airlines also have co-branded credit cards, and when you use these credit cards, you will earn points or miles toward that loyalty program.

In contrast, general travel rewards credit cards offer points or miles that can be transferred to multiple airline and hotel partners. Some of the leading issuers are Capital One, Chase, American Express, and Citi. You can redeem your points through each program’s respective travel portals or transfer them to get a better value out of your points. 

Grossman is a big fan of transferring points and miles for luxury experiences that would be unaffordable otherwise. “In the air, international business class and especially first class will provide the best value for points,” explains Grossman. “I recently booked a one-way flight on ANA to Japan in first class using 85,000 Virgin Atlantic miles + $290. The cash price was $11,400 [giving a value of] 13 cents per point.” He has dozens of stories like this, showing that there are plenty of ways to get valuable redemption opportunities once you have a firm understanding of the various loyalty programs available. 

Setting Your Travel Goals 

To start, you need to know what your dream vacation actually is. Maybe it’s a stay at a five-star ski resort in the French Alps or a first-class seat to anywhere. “The more time you give yourself to plan, the more time you’ll have to earn and optimize your rewards points,” explains Alev. “That may even mean delaying travel plans until you have enough points to subsidize the cost of your trip.”

Once you know where you want to go and what you want to do, you need to start thinking about a points strategy that will fit your travel goals. “You should be thinking about your rewards card strategy from the start of the trip planning process,” shares Alev. “Look into the rewards that your current cards offer, which may lead you to realize that you need another card in your wallet that helps you earn more points.”

Ideally, every purchase you make will be on a credit card that allows you to earn points or miles. This rule has a few exceptions, like withdrawing cash at an ATM. Whether it’s the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card, the IHG One Rewards Premier, the Chase Sapphire Reserve, or another popular travel credit card, each point you earn will help you reach your travel goals. 

Grossman explains, “The number one thing to remember if you really want to maximize how you strategize for your dream vacation is to collect transferable bank points (think Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One), since you will have a range of options when it comes time to book.”

Before applying for a travel rewards credit card, you must review your spending habits. “Make sure you understand which categories you’re spending the most money in, like groceries or restaurants,” says Alev. “Some cards will give you more points for certain categories, and you want to be able to maximize the number of points you’re earning on everyday spending.” Grossman echoes this sentiment, saying, “The first thing to do in setting your miles and points goals is to be realistic about how much you can spend on a credit card per month.”

For example, let’s say you have the American Express Gold Card and the Capital One Venture X. The Gold Card earns four points per dollar on dining purchases and purchases at U.S. grocery stores and one point per dollar on all other purchases. The Venture X earns 10 points per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel, five points per dollar on flights booked through Capital One Travel, and two points per dollar on all other purchases. 

In this scenario, you would want to use your Gold Card when you’re out to eat or buying groceries, but you’d use your Venture X when booking a hotel room. This way, you’re earning the most points per dollar on your spending. 

If you’re getting a new card, do some research on welcome offers. If the card you want to apply for has had a higher sign-up bonus in the past, you might want to wait to apply until you see a similar offer. Welcome offers typically have a spending requirement that needs to be met within a certain time period.

The current welcome offer on the Capital One Venture X is 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 on your card in the first three months of account opening. In comparison, the Platinum Card by American Express has a welcome offer of 150,000 membership rewards points after spending $8,000 on your card within the first six months of account opening. Another great way to earn points is to refer your friends to cards you love. Cards will often give you upwards of 25,000 miles per referral. 

You work hard to earn your credit card points, so you want to maximize their value. “When you have a trip in mind, do research to understand the cost of the basics — things like flights and hotels — and the value in points,” explains Alev. “That way, you’ll have a general understanding of how many points you need to save to feel comfortable traveling without breaking the bank.”

If you’re booking a once-in-a-lifetime trip , you don’t want to rush into anything. These kinds of trips take a lot of planning and should be thoroughly researched well before clicking purchase. When researching, use your credit cards to your advantage. 

“If you are new to this, I would figure out where you want to go and do some practice searches to feel out how many points you’ll need,” says Grossman. “If your dream trip is Cancun, you’ll need a lot less points than if it’s the Maldives (and I highly recommend the Maldives!).”

If you have a co-branded credit card, you should be searching for flights or hotel stays with the branded partner. If you have a general rewards card, you should be looking for travel with transfer partners. It’s not helpful if you find a great deal on a flight but don’t have a card that earns points for that airline. On occasion, cards will offer incentives for transferring to various partners, so you can potentially get bonus points if you keep an eye on your travel portal.

“Once you have enough for that first trip, go ahead and book it,” Grossman encourages. “Miles and points depreciate over time (programs increase how many points you need for awards) so they are not something to save for retirement.”

Let’s say you have always dreamed of staying in an over-the-water bungalow in the Maldives. This June, you can fly from Paris, France (CDG) to Male, Maldives (MLE), in business class on Emirates for 168,750 points, plus €1,409 in taxes and fees. You can transfer points from Capital One, American Express, Chase, and Citi to Emirates Skywards to book your flight. 

On either end of your trip, you could enjoy baguettes and espresso in Paris. Fly from New York City to Paris round-trip in Delta One for as little as 182,700 SkyMiles when you use a Delta SkyMiles credit card . This same flight would cost around $2,900 when booked with cash. 

Additionally, let’s say you are a cardholder of the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card, which gives you automatic Platinum Elite status. You decide to stay at the Ritz-Carlton in Male. Your suite is a one-bedroom villa with a private pool over the turquoise water. As a Bonvoy member, you get your fifth night free for every four you book. You stay from June 9 through June 14, soaking in the sun and living in luxury. This would cost you 364,000 points per stay. In cash, this same room would cost you $13,249, including taxes and fees. This gives you a fantastic valuation of more than 3.6 cents per point. 

Covering your major expenses with credit card points is a fantastic way to take a dream vacation. Alev adds, “Your goal should be to offset as many costs as possible with travel points so you’re paying as little cash as you can on your trip.” In this scenario, we are using points from multiple credit cards, which helps if you’re worried about accruing hundreds of thousands of miles on one card.

12 dream trips I'd take with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless sign-up bonus

The new sign-up bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card is genuinely remarkable. Usually, I prefer a points or miles sign-up bonus instead of free nights. After all, points allow you to decide whether you want to redeem for a night or two at a Marriott luxury hotel or many nights at a low-category Marriott property.

I'd surely take the Boundless Card's current sign-up bonus of five up to 50,000-point free night awards over the previous 100,000-point bonus. But, I was approved for the Boundless Card shortly before this new bonus offer launched. So, today I thought it would be fun to dream about how I'd use the five 50,000-point free night awards if I'd gotten that bonus.

TPG already has a list of 13 ways to use Marriott 50,000-point free nights as well as a family-specific list . However, these lists focus on the anniversary free night offered by the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card and the Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card (no longer open for new applications). And, frankly, my tastes are different than the authors of either guide.

So, in this guide, I'll focus on a couple of trips I'd take to maximize the Boundless Card's new sign-up bonus in destinations Americans can visit now .

Sign-up bonus details

The new sign-up bonus for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless is incredible. You can earn five free nights after you spend $5,000 on purchases in your first three months from your account opening. And, these nights are worth up to 50,000 points each.

So, the bonus could be worth as much as 250,000 points if you redeem each free night for 50,000 points. And, based on TPG's valuations , 250,000 Marriott Bonvoy points are worth $2,000.

Marriott Bonvoy moved to off-peak, standard and peak award pricing on Sept. 14, 2019. So, now award nights are priced according to the following award chart:

So, based on this award chart, you can use each 50,000-point free night at:

• Any Category 1-5 property
• Category 6 properties on off-peak and standard dates
• Category 7 properties on off-peak dates

Who is eligible for the Boundless and its bonus?

Many potential applicants won't qualify for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless or its sign-up bonus. First off, you'll need to be under Chase's 5/24 rule . So, you won't be eligible for the Boundless if you've opened five or more personal credit cards across all banks in the last 24 months. Second, Boundless applicants usually need good or excellent credit to be approved.

Finally, you won't be eligible for the Boundless if you currently have, or previously had and received a sign-up bonus within the last 24 months, any of the following cards:

• Marriott Bonvoy Premier credit card (also known as Marriott Rewards Premier)
• Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card (also known as Marriott Rewards Premier Plus)
• Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card

Additionally, you may be eligible for the Boundless but won't qualify for its sign-up bonus if you are a:

• Current cardmember, or were a previous cardmember within the last 30 days, of the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card (also known as The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express)
• Current or previous cardholders of either of the following cards which (1) received a welcome bonus or upgrade bonus in the last 24 months or (2) applied for and were approved in the previous 90 days:
• Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card (previously known as The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express)

But, if you're eligible for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless and it's five free nights sign-up bonus, you should certainly consider applying. Of course, the coronavirus pandemic will continue to be a factor in travel decisions for the foreseeable future. So, you may not want to apply if you don't think you'll be comfortable traveling and staying in a hotel before the free nights expire one year after they're issued.

Now, come with me as I discuss some dream trips I'd love to take with the five free nights sign-up bonus to destinations currently accepting American tourists .

Vacation in the Maldives

Honestly, if we're talking about dream trips and getting maximum value from these free nights, we have to start with the Maldives . And, I'd likely use the five 50,000-point nights in the Maldives . Specifically, there are three options to consider:

• Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa (Category 5, opening Sept. 2021)
• Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa (Category 6)
• The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort (Category 7)

Even if you're looking at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort , you'll find some blocks of five nights priced at 50,000 points next summer. So, using five 50,000-point free night certificates in a row at these resorts is certainly possible. Also, cash prices range from $252 per night at the Sheraton to $855 per night at the Westin before taxes and fees.

However, remember that you will need to pay for boat or seaplane transfers from the Male airport to the resort. And, in many cases, the cost of these transfers is high.

Explore Mexico City

My last trip to Mexico City was back in 2012, and I can't believe I haven't returned yet. The city has excellent tourist sites and fantastic food . Plus, there are multiple posh hotels in Mexico City where you could use 50,000-point free night certificates. At the top of my list are:

• The St. Regis Mexico City (Category 7)
• JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City (Category 6)
• Las Alcobas , a Luxury Collection Hotel, Mexico City (Category 6)
• The Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City (Category 7, opening March 2021)

If I traveled to Mexico City to use the Bonvoy Boundless' free night certificates, I'd likely hop between a few of these hotels. That way, I could try a few different hotels. Hotel hopping could also help me find off-peak dates for the Category 7 hotels and standard or off-peak dates for the Category 6 hotels.

Mexico can be an appealing destination during the coronavirus pandemic. For many of us, Mexico City requires less flight time than many U.S. destinations. And, you'll have less jet lag to contend with than most international destinations. So, if you're willing to travel domestically during the pandemic, you may get better value by traveling to Mexico .

Relax in Cancun

A beach trip to Mexico has been on my mind a lot recently. After all, I'm still seriously considering a trip to Cancun or other Mexico resort areas to maximize some current hotel promotions . But, the Bonvoy Boundless' sign-up bonus would be another reason to consider a Canun trip. Specifically, the following Cancun properties look appealing:

• The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun (Category 6)
• JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa (Category 6)

TPG's Zach Griff strongly preferred the JW Marriott Cancun when he stayed at both resorts in 2019. But, as with the Mexico City hotels, I'd likely hop between resorts using my nights.

There are many resorts in Cancun that offer relatively low prices for paid nights currently -- including some of the best hotels in Mexico . So, you can extend your trip by mixing in some paid stays, which may also help you maximize hotel promotions.

Luxury stays in Turkey

I'm currently in Turkey as part of a trip I've had planned for almost a year. And, on this trip, I'm getting my last five nights with Marriott to earn Platinum Elite status this year .

But Turkey is one of my favorite countries to visit. So, I'd certainly consider returning if I had five 50,000-point free night certificates from the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card. And, if I did so, I'd stay at one or more of the following hotels:

• JW Marriott Istanbul Bosphorus (Category 5)
• The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul (Category 5)
• Le Méridien Bodrum Beach Resort (Category 5)
• The St. Regis Istanbul (Category 6)
• The Bodrum Edition (Category 7)
• Caresse, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Bodrum (Category 7)

TPG's Nick Ellis loved his stay at The Bodrum Edition. So, if I ventured outside Istanbul , I'd likely check out this property. But, in Istanbul, you can't beat the location of the JW Marriott.

I'd likely split my 50,000-point nights into a few different stays to try a variety of hotels. And, on an extended trip, I'd likely mix in some paid stays as well. But, depending on what you want out of your Turkey trip, I could see spending all five nights at any of the six properties listed above.

Plane spotting on a private island in Aruba

TPG's Zach Honig enjoyed plane spotting on The Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino's private island in 2019. He was less impressed with the actual resort, but the planespotting experience put the resort on my list anyway. But, this resort may not be a good use of your 50,000-point free nights on some dates. After all, paid nights are less than $250 for some nights.

Stay along Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janiero

I've visited Rio de Janeiro, Brazil , a few times, including this past spring for Carnival. And, each time, I've enjoyed walking along Copacabana Beach. But, it'd certainly be fun to visit again and stay at the Category 5 JW Marriott Hotel Rio De Janeiro on Copacabana Beach.

Although this property is well-located, the cash prices are currently $151 per night during the week and $118 per night on the weekends. So, you'll likely find more lucrative uses for your free nights. But, this property is undoubtedly appealing if you have a trip planned to Rio de Janeiro .

Visit Dubrovnik, Croatia

TPG's Brian Kelly and Daniel Ross both visited Croatia shortly after it reopened to tourists this summer. He loved his trip, and I've been considering a Croatia trip myself since visiting some neighboring countries a few years ago. Marriott's Category 5 Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera Hotel is the best property in Croatia if you're looking to use your 50,000-point free night certificates.

This Sheraton is a beautiful property that seemingly plans to reopen on Apr. 1, 2021. The hotel is just outside Dubrovnik , has excellent views overlooking the Adriatic and has a private beach. But, rates range from $145 to $251 per night, which doesn't provide an excellent value for a 50,000-point free night certificate.

Enjoy resort life in the Dominican Republic

Over the last few years, I've visited the Dominican Republic for two memorable trips. First, I visited as part of JetBlue's Destination Good trip in 2018. And last summer, I returned to live at an all-inclusive for a month using Choice Privileges points . But, especially with ongoing opportunities to redeem Choice Privileges points at a high value , a few appealing Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts properties and low-cost all-inclusive resort options, I've long had another trip to the Dominican Republic on my mind.

So, it could be fun to use a few of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card's 50,000-point free nights at the Category 6 Westin Puntacana Resort & Club as part of a more extended trip. The Westin has three miles of beach, golf courses and three restaurants. But, cash rates usually range from $128 to $241. So, you may not get a very high value from your 50,000-point free nights in the Dominican Republic.

Stay along the Nile River at the Ritz-Carleton or St. Regis in Egypt

Before the coronavirus pandemic halted travel, I had a trip planned to Egypt this summer. After all, there are some great low-category World of Hyatt , Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy properties in Egypt.

Egypt is one of the countries where U.S. passport holders can currently travel . Plus, there are Category 5 Ritz-Carleton and St. Regis hotels located along the Nile River in Cairo. So, you can use the 50,000-point free nights from the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card's sign-up bonus even for peak nights at these hotels.

Cash rates usually range from $86 to $185 for the Ritz-Carleton and are generally around $215 per night for the St. Regis. So, although you'd likely get a great experience from your 50,000-point free nights at these properties, you wouldn't be redeeming them for a very high rate.

On the other hand, if you have Ritz-Carleton Club Level upgrade certificates , you may want to consider an inexpensive paid stay at the Ritz-Carleton that is eligible for these certificates.

Relax at a resort in Puerto Rico

If you're looking for a tropical vacation, but don't want to go all that far, Puerto Rico may be a good option. And, several Marriott options in Puerto Rico may be a good use of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card's sign-up bonus of five 50,000-point free night certificates:

• Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort (Category 5)
• San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino (Category 6)
• La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort (Category 6)

All of these resorts have beaches and resort amenities, so it comes down to which rooms and resort amenities you prefer. I'd choose the La Concha Renaissance since you can use the free night certificates to book into an oceanview room. But, I also might spend a few nights at one resort and then a few nights at another resort. Cash rates are in the $200-$300 range for most nights at these resorts, so you'd be getting a decent, but not excellent, value for your free night certificates.

Ample options in Dubai

Dubai is currently accepting U.S. passport holders . And, there are 16 Marriott hotels in the city that are Category 5, 6 or 7. So, you have ample options if you want to see Dubai and even hop from hotel to hotel using your five 50,000-point free nights. My top choices would be:

• Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort (Category 6)
• La Ville Hotel & Suites CITY WALK, Dubai, Autograph Collection (Category 6)
• Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai (Category 6)
• JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai (Category 6)
• W Dubai - The Palm (Category 7)
• Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah, Dubai (Category 7)
• Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa (Category 7)
• The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina (Category 7)

I'd likely choose one of the properties located on The Palm for the experience. But, check current tourist restrictions before traveling, especially if you plan to explore outside Dubai at all.

Stay at Disney World

Despite being in my 30s with no children, I loved visiting Disney World last winter. Plus, I have fond memories of staying at Disney World resorts as a child. So, it would be fun to spend at least a couple of the 50,000-point free nights at the Walt Disney World Swan or Walt Disney World Dolphin .

Both properties are Category 6, though. So, I'd need to look for off-peak or standard nights. It's also worth noting that cash prices for almost every date at these properties are currently sub-$250. So, redeeming your 50,000-point free nights for a Disney World trip isn't the most lucrative way to use your nights.

Bottom line

I've planned a few trips around using hotel free night certificates in the past. I usually only have one or two free night certificates as a perk of a hotel credit card , though. So, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card's current sign-up bonus provides a unique opportunity: five free night certificates to use at Marriott Hotels for nights costing 50,000 points or less. And, five nights is certainly enough to justify planning a dream trip.

If I were eligible for this bonus, I'd almost certainly apply, meet the minimum spending requirements and then plan a trip to the Maldives to use the five free nights. Sure, hotel and resort transfers cost a lot in the Maldives . However, these five free night certificates would be an excellent catalyst for an experience I wouldn't use points or cash to obtain.

However, as with all Marriott hotels, be sure to check the What to Expect webpage for your property. After all, some Marriott properties have closed restaurants, lounges and spas and many offer decreased elite perks . But, if I'm going to use my 50,000-point certificate for an aspirational stay, I want to get the full experience.

To celebrate them, and to help you, we have brought them together under this Masters of Luxury banner. There are fewer than two dozen, nearly all of them specialists in certain regions or types of journeys. They come with our endorsement. 

We’ve worked closely with the first group on stories over the past year, including asking them to nominate the hotels and suites they consider the greatest places to stay in the world. 1. Christopher Wilmot-Sitwell, Cazenove & Loyd

The 25-strong, UK-based agency , steered by the three-decade veteran Wilmot-Sitwell, is known for deftly combining adventure travel—think long-haul jaunts to hard-to-reach Asian and African sites—with no-beat-missed luxury. It was an early champion of sustainability: The firm is committed to offsetting the carbon impact of its own research trips via CommuniTree, a Nicaraguan reforestation project (clients can sign up, too).

2. Henry Cookson, Cookson Adventures

Henry Cookson worked as a horse-riding safari guide in Africa before establishing his London-based firm . He’s carved out a niche that focuses on a small number of elaborate adventures; a few dozen custom itineraries are developed on demand each year. If you want a private trip to Antarctica, there may be no team better to organize it: Henry holds the world record for kite-skiing to the Pole of Inaccessibility, and Cookson Adventures was the first private company to take a submersible to Antarctica. 3. Cari Gray, Gray & Co.

If you’re outdoorsy, ready for anything and prepared to sweat, call Cari Gray. Few manage to design and book high-end active trips with more finesse than the Canadian, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif. Gray combines thrilling, adrenaline-powered programming with much-needed indulgence, whether that’s organizing biking in the mountains of Mallorca or chartering a fishing expedition in the waters off Chile.

4. John Clifford, International Travel Management

John Clifford has almost four decades of experience as a trip designer for high-net-worth folk. Over that time, he’s developed a particular reputation for catering to LGBTQ+ travelers. From his base in San Diego, Calif. , Clifford works worldwide and he can as comfortably score you a last-minute Christmas vacay to Uxua in Trancoso as get you to Iceland’s Hotel Husafell in peak season. “My clients always get the best suite pre-blocked,” he says, “I often handpick it myself.”

5. Gary Portuesi & Jennifer Schwartz, Authentic Explorations

Hungry for Italy? Authentic Explorations  is a go-to for any gourmet keen to indulge in truffles, bresaola and Barolo, among other Italian delicacies. Portuesi co-owns an Italian cooking school in NYC and thus certainly knows his stuff. A buyout of Massimo Bottura’s impossible-to-secure Osteria Francescana is easy enough for this team, but they’ll also happily supply a curated list of restaurants to your tastes. Of course, they’ll take care of booking them, too. AE has a headquarters stateside, as well as satellite offices in Florence and Sicily, giving it a head start on the ground in Italy. The company, formerly known as Authentic Italy, has recently broadened to other European vacation spots in recent years, including Croatia, Spain and Portugal. 

6. Catherine Heald, Remote Lands

If you’re heading to multiple countries in Asia—from Japan to the Maldives and everything in between—there’s no better counsel than that of Catherine Heald. “I have devoted my life to Asia since moving to Hong Kong in 1987,” she says. Heald and her team have expertise in major cities, but the farthest flung spots are a specialty. Think: Japan’s Yakushima or India’s Sikkim. Heald’s trips often support good causes: Clients who travel to Siem Reap, for example, may dig a water well for a local family as part of their journey. Of course, travelers can expect a good dose of luxury, too.

7. Tanya Dalton, Greaves India

Dalton’s firm , with offices in London, Chicago and Delhi, has a firm handle on all things India. The family business, founded by her Mumbai-born grandfather and later run by her mother, has been around for more than four decades. As a result, Dalton has the ability to grant access to closely guarded sites in Southeast Asia’s largest country. Private palace? You got it. She can also wrangle suites in Rajasthani or program tiger-centric safaris. The choice is yours.

8. Cedric Reversade, Unique Properties & Events

Some call him the villa whisperer, and for good reason. Cedric Reversade, who splits his time between London and Paris, has an unparalleled list of the world’s most exclusive private homes in every must-visit destination, from Saint-Tropez to Capri. Many of the lavish pads are only available (discreetly) via his firm. He and business partner Paul Maxime Koskas don’t simply rent out properties, either. The duo’s point of difference has long been the concierge service that comes bundled with the rental ; it’s like having an ultra-connected EA in any place you vacation.

9. Sandy Cunningham, Uncharted

Sandy Cunningham’s firm Uncharted is aptly named, as it specializes in adventures and safaris in remote destinations. She began her career as a safari operator in East Africa, so she knows the game. Cunningham is adept at creating long-haul trips for large groups, too: She once booked a celebrity family into a private island in Seychelles without publicity, for instance. She has also proved she can safeguard a traveler’s privacy: She whisked the same family out a day earlier than planned, under cover of darkness, to avoid alerting any paparazzi.

10. Max Rosenthal & Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal, Fischer Travel

Max Rosenthal (center) is the third generation of his family to join Fischer Travel . The New York-based firm was founded by his grandfather Bill Fischer, but is currently run by his mom Stacy. The 30-strong operation is more like a members-only club than a conventional travel agency, with a $150,000 initiation fee and annual dues of $25,000. For that, the team opens up its little black book to create one-off experiences worldwide. Indeed, it was Fischer Travel clients who were the first to experience Camp Sarika at Amangiri a month before it opened to anyone else. Another client wanted to see Wadi Rum in Jordan, but the local hotel didn’t pass Fischer’s quality control, so the team shipped in 10 staff from the Kempinski in Aqaba to temporarily run the camp at a higher level.

11. Jean Sanz Bernay, JSB Journeys

US native Jean Sanz Bernay of the six-person boutique operation JSB Journeys has an affinity for all things Latin America. “I’ve traveled through, and lived in, every nook and cranny of South and Central America.” She has connections across the continent and continues to cater to all manner of requests. One client, for example, needed a last-minute, after-midnight jewelry store appointment in Lima to pick out his wife’s present, and another requested a strict kosher trip to Argentina with dinner at a local rabbi’s home.

12. Jules Maury, Scott Dunn Private

The elegant, charming Jules Maury grew up globetrotting. She was the daughter of a Dow Chemical exec whose career took him (and his family) all over the world. Maury became a travel specialist by happenstance while living overseas; friends persistently asked her advice due to her insiderish knowledge and fine taste. Now she’s made it her career. Based in London, she runs the  ultra-elite offshoot  of Scott Dunn. Maury’s team focuses on custom itineraries worldwide, with an emphasis on forging access to the impossible.

13. Deborah Calmeyer, Roar Africa

Zimbabwe-born Deborah Calmeyer is the go-to Africa expert for any ultra-high-net-worth traveler. She has on the ground offices in both Nairobi and Cape Town, plus headquarters in NYC. Roar Africa offers traditional safaris, but Calmeyer has also established a standalone division that ups the ante on the already-luxe trips. Roar Privé ‘s focus is villa exclusive rentals in the bush. It also offers private-jet-based safaris , which have proven so popular that they regularly sell out months in advance.  

14. Kevin Jackson, EXP Journeys

When money is truly no object, EXP Journeys comes in. Jackson and his team create bespoke, one-time-only events in extraordinary locations, often with six-figure budgets or higher. Take the dinosaur dig in the southwest, for instance, in which guests helped discover a new species with a well-known paleontologist. Another standout was a dinner arranged in partnership with Navajo Nation that saw travelers break bread with the last living Navajo Code Talker from World War II.

15. Jonathan Alder, Jonathan’s Travels

Florida-based Jonathan Alder is another Africa insider: He once dropped everything to fly to East Africa to scout private aircraft for clients to use on a month-long trip across the continent. He recommends camps like Angama in the Masai Mara: Come for the walking safari, stay for the glass of champagne overlooking the valley. “It’s the exact spot where the movie poster for Out of Africa was taken,” he says. As a bonus, Alder is also an expert in Japan.

16. Stuart Rigg, Southern Crossings

For more than 30 years, Sydney-based Stuart Rigg has helped travelers explore Australia and New Zealand. Logistics and connections of all kinds are tricky Downunder, so his assistance is particularly welcome. There’s virtually no request he can’t find a way to fulfill. In fact, one celebrity tasked Rigg with organizing his 50th birthday at a mansion in Sydney. The manse’s gym had to be fully refitted and the A/C recalibrated to ensure the traveler’s ideal temp. The birthday bash itself was on a private island right in the heart of Sydney Harbour.

17. Julian Harrison, Premier Tours

Julian Harrison was born and raised in South Africa, before working as a guide there. This primed him to run a travel firm focused squarely on the continent.
