Tenerife is one of the best locations for solo travellers of all kinds. Whether you go for your very first trip all alone or you are already a solo travel pro, this island in Canaries gives you plenty of both adventure and safety. Where to travel solo in Tenerife, what is the best time to visit the place, how to get around without having a car and what places to visit in Tenerife, especially in the north, are topics included in this ultimate guide of your Tenerife solo travel. Are you ready for the ride?

tenerife solo travel

Never-ending sunshine, dramatic scenery, enchanted forests, black beaches, magnificent cliffs, scenic views, mysterious volcanos, sexy surfers, translucent waters, cute colourful houses, banana fields and deep historical and cultural backgrounds –  that is Tenerife, one of the most popular isles of the group of Spanish archipelago called Canary Islands.

Visited all over the year by freshly wed couples, families, wild groups of friends, as well as solo travellers, this island attracted around 2.7 million tourists in 2021. The busiest seasons are summer and winter , when Europeans escape to Canary Islands from the cold and dark days and enjoy sunny Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

tenerife solo travel

The truth is that the weather in Tenerife, especially in the south, is always or nearly always great. However, that’s not what this article is about! I guess you’re all already super eager to read more about the practical tips for your exciting solo travel to Tenerife. Let’s start the show!

TABLE OF CONTENTS:

Why to Travel to Tenerife Alone

Long story short. I needed a trip. A trip to a sunny place, as I live in Hamburg, the most beautiful city in Germany with the possibly shittiest weather in the country. I was listening to odes about Tenerife from basically all of my friends around. One of my dearest friends actually travelled to this island on her own and described it as a great place to explore alone .

tenerife solo travel

Next, I love scenic views. To be precise, I love sea views and rocky dramatic scenery. Guess what: Tenerife has it all! I checked the flights and a managed to find a great deal: Hamburg to North Tenerife via Barcelona with Vueling for only 200 euros including carry-on luggage! (That is what I usually pay for a 1.5 hour flight to Vienna). It was clear: Tenerife, I am coming, baby!

Tenerife is Safe, Affordable & Sexy

tenerife solo travel

Alright, these are the reasons which brought me to Tenerife. But why you, an experienced lone wolf or a solo travel newbie, should head to Tenerife? Because it is a safe place which offers you great hiking routes, warm and sunny weather , it has stunning exotic nature – geographically it belongs to Africa, so it looks different from any other European countries and still, you pay there with euros – an easy to get currency.

tenerife solo travel

Moreover, it is relatively cheap , you can surf there, you can party there, you can visit volcanos if you wish so, you can swim if that is what you desire. The food in Tenerife is great, bananas are wonderful (the best bananas I have eaten in my long 35-year-old life!), the people are warm and helpful, and the public transport is literally the best from all the Canary Islands.

tenerife solo travel

To sum it up, you have plenty of things to do in Tenerife, it is pretty easy to get around without a car, and it is safe , especially for female solo travellers . In addition, the climate is great , it is an affordable place and the nature is just stunning . It has the African exotic nature vibe mixed with Latin American architecture vibe. Many Latin American cities were built according to La Laguna , the oldest Tenerife’s capital. It is a piece of real ‘European’ exotica.

Is Travelling Solo to Tenerife Safe, Especially for Female Solo Travellers?

tenerife solo travel

Yes, it definitely is! As I already mentioned, it is a very safe place to visit . That is why I really recommend it, especially for people who would like to go for a trip alone for the first time . The infrastructure is very solid. The most popular and the biggest towns are connected by bus – for example, there is a twice an hour connection from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Costa Adeja in the south.

Throughout my 8 nights & 7 days solo travel in Tenerife I didn’t encounter a single dangerous situation, and I was hiking alone, walking alone at night and travelling alone by bus most of the time. I stayed up the north, but many solo travellers were actually located in the south during my time of the stay – November.

tenerife solo travel

Therefore, I can only assume that both places are more or less the same safety wise . However, there are many more tourists in the south which may, in my opinion, increase the chances of robberies or inadequate drunk behaviours. But a solo travelling girl I met during my trip didn’t experience any troubles in the south either.

What is the Best place to Stay in Tenerife for Solo Travellers?

tenerife solo travel

Firstly, you should decide which part of the island would reach your Tenerife solo travel plans and expectations . The north and the south are different – climate, nature and vibe wise. I stayed in the north as my flights from Hamburg were flying over there, and I heard that staying in Santa Cruz is the easiest way due to the best public transport connections, which is very true.

The South is Sunnier & Commercial

Surfers , travellers and solo travellers who plan to hike Teide , see Los Gigantes and explore La Gomera head usually to the south around El Médano, Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos . However, the last two mentioned are much more commercialized , full of tourists , and people on stag or hen parties . One of the pluses of staying in the south is that you can easily find other solo travellers to mingle with and there are more options to book guided tours or trips, including boat trips to La Gomera. South Tenerife has usually better climate and sunnier weather than the north.

The North is Green & Cute

tenerife solo travel

On the other hand, people like me who prefer greenery and smaller, cosier places should head to the north . The area of Santa Cruz and La Laguna was the first one to be inhabited, and you can find many charming traditional canary houses there with the famous wooden canary balconies. The north has also Anaga Rural Park , the beautiful rain forest and ancient mountain range which is home to many exotic plant species.

tenerife solo travel

Another option is to stay half of the trip in the north and half of the trip in the south , but I’d recommend it only if you stay 10 days and more . I stayed in north Tenerife for 7 days and still didn’t manage to see everything I wanted (however, I really took my time and didn’t rush at all.)

My advice would be to stay in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the north, from which you have the best connections to surrounding places and from where you can plan day trips. After you explore this area, you can head to the south. Here I can’t recommend any place to stay yet as I didn’t travel there. Although, I know many people usually stay in El Médano, Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos or Arona.

Can You Travel Solo in Tenerife without a Car?

tenerife solo travel

It is definitely doable! Of course, renting a car gives you a great freedom, flexibility and many options to explore more places in a shorter time but the infrastructure in Tenerife ; especially in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is very advanced .

Titsa will be your best friend during this time. There you can check all the buses which drive through the island and plan your itinerary accordingly. You can as well download the app and use it to purchase tickets by scanning a QR code on the door of the buses.

tenerife solo travel

The prices for the public transport in the north were very cheap . For every journey around Santa Cruz, I paid only 1.25 euros and some of the routes took around one hour! Also, you can enjoy the most spectacular views from the bus thanks to its elevated undercarriage / high wheels. The north of Tenerife is extremely hilly, which provides you with amazingly dramatic scenery.

Buses to some parts of the island are very frequent – for example you can get to San Andrés or Playa de las Teresitas every 15 minutes, and it takes about 20 minutes to get to La Laguna by a tram.

tenerife solo travel

Yet, there are some routes with less daily connections , so you need to make an extra afford for the planning and timing. It is certainly doable, though! My best highlights of the trip were located exactly on this less frequent routes, and I didn’t experience any issues. Everything is about a great timing , which is an important virtue in life in general. (Take this as an attempt to motivate you.)

What is the Best Time to Travel Solo to Tenerife

This depends on the exact activities you plan to do in Tenerife. The hottest months are July, August and September, so these could be great for a regular beach holidays .

tenerife solo travel

However, hiking during the tropical summer wouldn’t be the loveliest, would it? Therefore, in case that the mountains are the travel trigger for you, I’d recommend January, May, June, November and December . Even though January is still ‘colder’ with an average temperature of 19 degrees (don’t freeze out there!), it is the driest month.

The cable car to Teide might be closed during the winter times due to snow and bad weather conditions. If you plan to hike up Teide and use the cable car, avoid winter months because the chances of the closure are high.

Travelling to Tenerife in November

tenerife solo travel

I travelled to Tenerife in the middle of November and I experienced both sunny and misty weather and even though it was windy at times (the north is always unpredictable due to the mountains), it never rained during my visit. However, this type of weather is very unusual for November, as November tended to be wettish in the past years. The climate change influences this island too.

Tenerife in November was fabulous during my stay. I could hike, and I could swim , I could enjoy the beach and stroll over the city with the warm sunshine cuddling my back.

tenerife solo travel

Fun fact: don’t forget your summer hat. It doesn’t matter if it is 25 degrees in Tenerife, they sell only Autumn and Winter clothes during ‘colder’ months, so it won’t be that simple to get summery items over there! (You can definitely get a sporty cap. It is just not my thing, and I searched for a bucket hat. Found only one. It didn’t fit me. World problems, I know!)

If you’re asking what would be the best time to visit Tenerife for surfing , I’d lead you to this article I found: Surf in Tenerife because I am not a surfer myself and won’t pretend here that I know answers for all questions. (Both modesty and honesty are honoured virtues, too.)

Best Restaurants in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for Solo Travellers

I will throw out here my top 5 favourite restaurants I enjoyed my food at in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna . To be honest, dining out was and actually always is one of the things I don’t really like during my solo trips. If I do it three nights in a row, it is completely fine, but being a lonely eater for a week is kind of tough. I had a dinner company only once during my 8-night trip in Tenerife.

People and stuff usually check you up, and you can see their pity looks. Come on, guys. I had a blast! (I even tried Tinder to find some ‘drinks and dinner’ dates but 90% guys took it as an ONS chance, so my naïve imagination of a company over tapas was demolished. This is definitely the most practical advice for female solo travellers in Tenerife…).

tenerife solo travel

My TOP 5 Favourite Restaurants in Santa Cruz

D’Tapas,26 – Tapas with a twist. Great service, lovely wine and tasty food. I had a cold salad of shrimps and octopus as a starter and a beef cheeks as main.

Patio Canario La Laguna – A traditional Canarian cuisine with a classic ‘casa alta’ look. The food was just on point and the portions were huge. I met another solo traveller, and we shared a cheese board (super large one, take the medium portion. It was a cheese overload!), Pimientos el Padrón and Papas Arrugadas .

tenerife solo travel

Restaurante La Posada – Offers traditional Spanish cuisine and tapas with an excellent service. As I dined alone, they gave me a glass of wine for free! (Dining alone has its perks, after all). I took a delicious seafood tostada and my favourite Solomillo de Pimientos steak. Heaven.

Cayote Restaurant – This was my hotel’s restaurant. It is a high cuisine with high prices but the food was spectacular. I had scallops, pumpkin soup (on the house) and incredible chocolate dessert called Chocolate en Texturas.

La Tasca Rebotica   – Traditional and touristy place at Plaza San Francisco. I didn’t expect much as it is located in one of the most visited plazas of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. However, the food was yummy! I took Pulpo Rebotica and Chipirones.

7 Things to Do in North Tenerife when Travelling Alone (and without a Car)

Trust me, guys. There is like hundreds if not thousands of things to do and places to see in Tenerife. To answer your curious question on which places to visit in (mostly north) Tenerife, I will use my daily itinerary .

tenerife solo travel

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to visit all the places I wanted. All the guided tours to volcano Teide were booked out , and I didn’t feel comfortable to hike there alone, plus it was kind of far from Santa Cruz. Don’t make the same mistake as me and book everything in advance , it sells like freshly baked bread in the morning!

The second place, which was on my list as I have an OCD: Obsessive Cliff Disorder , were Los Gigantes. I managed to see them only from the back on a guided tour through Masca and Parque Rural de Teno. The plus is: I have already 2 reasons to visit beautiful Tenerife again! But let’s move on to inspire you with a list of places you can visit during your solo travel in Tenerife.

1. Strolling over Santa Cruz de Tenerife

tenerife solo travel

Tenerife’s capital is a cute city with a welcoming vibe, lovely parks and great connections to other parts of the island. It doesn’t have a beach, only a big industrial port , but you can easily get to Playa de las Teresitas by bus. Here are four things I enjoyed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife the most, and I believe they can be part of your solo travel itinerary too.

Absolutely gorgeous botanical garden specialized in palm trees from all over the world. Lovely sea views and a view to the Auditorium are only a plus. You can walk through Melanesia, Madagascar, Australia, Asia, Caribbean etc. and explore the most beautiful palms and other exotic trees.

tenerife solo travel

Plaza España

This is a signature plaza of Tenerife. I didn’t do much over there to be honest, but it is quite a charming place to have a drink or just chill around.

This is another cool signature building of Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Don’t forget to watch over the sea rocks painted with faces of celebrities.

tenerife solo travel

‘Centro historico’ is located between the street of Calle La Noria, Plaza de España Plaza de Candelaria and Plaza de Weyler. You can spot here many beautiful cute little houses bursting in colours, restaurants, bars or churches.

tenerife solo travel

Parque García Sanabria

This is a gorgeous park to walk around and enjoy some lovely shadow on a sunny day. There is even a nice ice cream place over there.

tenerife solo travel

2. Getting Dramatic at Almáciga, Roque de las Bodegas & Benijo

The northern shore of Tenerife is incredible! The views from the city of Almáciga absolutely took my breath.  Not only absolutely but as well literally as it was windy as hell and I couldn’t catch up my breath afterwards!

tenerife solo travel

Almáciga – a little tiny hilly village with a rocky beach, Roque de las Bodegas – one of the busiest beaches in the area and Benijo – one of the most remote beaches in the north are definitely one of the best places to see in Tenerife on your solo trip. As these three are located next to each other you can visit them during the same round, or you can at least enjoy the fantastic views from one beach to the other ones.

tenerife solo travel

I chose a blustery, cloudy and grey day to come to this place which gave it a dark dramatic vibe, but it was one of my highlights of the whole Tenerife trip. It is not easy to get there because you need to drive across the Anaga Mountains ; the road is very curvy and narrow . Walking around the mentioned beaches is also not that easy as there is no pedestrian pathway , only a curvy road for cars.

tenerife solo travel

However, there is a direct bus number 946 from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which operates 8 times a day on weekdays and 6 times a day over weekends . It is not the greatest schedule per se, but it is completely doable with the right time management (it is a virtue to learn, do you remember?).

tenerife solo travel

In addition, the bus ride is a great experience on its own ! You pass directly through the Anaga Mountain Range through a narrow road where you think about the little things of your life because you are actually scared that the bus slips off the road and rolls down to the coast. I loved it! And this rollercoaster costs only 1.25 euros.

tenerife solo travel

3. Enjoying Views from Playa Las Gaviotas and Playa de Las Teresitas

Would you fancy an isolated black sandy beach under a huge cliff? Or is your taste more in favour of an artificial but still charming white sandy beach with amenities and chirringuitos (beach bars). Why not to try both?

tenerife solo travel

I didn’t personally beach on the Las Gaviotas , but I got some superb views to this remote beach which is not that easy to access but still attracts people due to its secluded nature and mysterious vibes. You can get there by car; the beach has even a dedicated parking space. Or you can take a bus number 945 which doesn’t operate that often – but again, with a proper timing everything is possible.

tenerife solo travel

The beach is definitely reachable also by bike and by walk. I walked from the Las Gaviotas bus stop to Playa de Las Teresitas . All drivers hated me, of course because the road is once again super curvy and narrow, but people usually walk there because nobody every even bothered to think about pedestrians when building it up.

tenerife solo travel

If you don’t watch your phone all the time, focus on the road and make it easier for the drivers by stepping aside a bit when they pass around , it is fine. I’d say that doing this route is much easier for the walkers and drivers than for the bikers. (Yet, many people bike through there!).

tenerife solo travel

Anyway, the views from the road are just spectacular and once again – pretty dramatic . Once you move lower to already closed Mirador de Las Teresitas, drama changes into a colourful bliss . The views to the beach, which is yet fake (the sand is fake, not the view!) are gorgeous. My level of endorphins jumped very high – seeing a dark drama and a sweet candy afterwards was like a dream!

tenerife solo travel

After the long walk you can settle on the Playa de Las Teresitas, rent a beach chair with an umbrella for only 5 euros, have a swim, catch some sun and even watch the sun setting down the San Andrés. What a romance!

tenerife solo travel

4. Hiking through Anaga Rural Park

Visiting the ancient rainforest of Anag a was one of my first things on the list. This range of mountains is definitely a place to visit in Tenerife, not only for solo travellers.

The forest offers you plenty of hiking trails , remote corners to hide from the crowds, there are incredible views and mostly, it is home of stunning plant species . There are not many wild animals in Anaga and on the island in general, only lizards. (Mia, my dear friend, I am thinking of you right now. Note: She hates lizards!).

tenerife solo travel

I wasn’t brave enough to hike through Anaga alone. Not that the forest would scare me, I don’t trust my orientation skills that much, and getting lost in the middle of a 119.6 km² rainforest doesn’t sound like a great idea to me. It may make a great and catchy newspaper titles though: Slovak woman out of her mind found in Anaga. Survived, but may not talk ever again.

tenerife solo travel

Therefore, I booked a guided tour with World Travel Tenerife – a short but sweet hike or rather a walk through more secluded parts of the forest, including El Pijaral, the Enchanted Forest . Our guide Angel was great! He shared with us many fun but as well scary stories. I strongly recommend his guided tours!

tenerife solo travel

According to Alltrails there are 114 trails in the Anaga Mountains alone ! That means you could spend all your Tenerife solo travel only by exploring the ancient forest itself. It is really an exceptionally beautiful range of mountain s with incredibly fresh air and tall tilted green bushes and trees. Love at first, second, last sight. All sights!

5. Visiting San Cristobal La Laguna

tenerife solo travel

This is such a cute city! The centre of La Laguna is full of narrow streets with charming colourful canary houses, bars, restaurants, shops and more. It was hard for me to believe that La Laguna is the second most populous city in Tenerife and the third in the Canary Islands after Santa Cruz, as the centre has such a rural vibe !

tenerife solo travel

La Laguna has a long deep history as it was one of the first settlements and cities of Tenerife after being conquered by the Spanish conquerors.  Therefore, it became the cradle of the  Enlightenment  in the Canary Islands.

You can get there easily from Santa Cruz by a tram which costs only a few euros, and it takes approximately 20 minutes to reach it. There are several tram stops in Santa Cruz, and it drives until late, so you have plenty of chances to get to La Laguna.

tenerife solo travel

I would devote La Laguna an afternoon or an evening. You can stop at Mirador de San Roque from where you get a lovely view to La Laguna and surrounding Anaga Rural Park. You definitely should have lunch or a dinner as this town. The centre is full of lovely restaurants. As mentioned above, we dined at Patio Canario with another solo traveller and the food was damn tasty! If you wish to experience some authentic Canarian architecture and feel hundreds of years of history, visiting La Laguna is definitely one of the best things to do in Tenerife.

6. Exploring the Western Shores

tenerife solo travel

One of the perks of going for a guided tour with a native guide is that you can see many places in a short time. Many stunning places to be precise, without spending too much time on doing your research and with many ‘off the beaten path’ places included.

As I felt comfortable with Angel in Anaga, he was a native guy with a great hiking experience and tremendous knowledge about Tenerife, I booked another guided tour with him. This one was called Northern Secrets , and despite the name we explore not only part of the northwest shore, but we entered the warmer and drier southwest too.

tenerife solo travel

This tour was full of spectacular views and even when we were in the car most of the time, it was a lovely experience to explore new places and see the differences between the north and the south. I am not saying you need to take the very same guided tour as me. Many of the places mentioned below are reachable by public transport . Take this rather as an inspiration to make your own Tenerife solo travel itinerary.

Mirador de Humbolt

tenerife solo travel

This is a wonderful view point in Orotava with stunning views to the northwest scenery – Orotava village, banana fields, sea, volcano Teide. It was named after the famous German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt , who visited the island before his journey to South America.

Orotava is one of the oldest towns in the Canary Islands, founded in the early 16th Century. It is known for its spectacular architecture, full of classic Canary houses and wooden balconies.

Rambla de Castro

tenerife solo travel

Citing World Travel Tenerife, Rambla de Castro is the largest wild palm grove on the island overlooking the entire north coast. The views to this protected field are an absolute bliss! One of our co-visitor whose family comes from Barbados said herself that this could be easily a scene from her home island! This is definitely a must-see place in Tenerife!

Charco del Viento

tenerife solo travel

This is apparently the most popular natural bath in Tenerife and hell yes, it looked like a dreamy pool one would jump in within a second. There are instructions on how to enter the bath, which you should read carefully. It is indeed a natural bath in the middle of rock and as the water can get wild, it is better to respect the rules at least this time.

Santiago del Teide

tenerife solo travel

Santiago del Teide is a tiny and cute village with a super mini plaza and a church on the southwest of the island. We stopped here for a coffee. I needed some sugar, so I took the very famous Barraquito – multi-layered coffee drink with espresso liquor, condensed milk, frothed milk, lemon or lime zest and cinnamon.

I think that this town is really not a must-visit place, but it is a great start point for hiking to the Parque Rural de Teno . There is no direct connection from Santa Cruz to Santiage del Teide, but it takes only two buses with a stop at Estación Icod, and it takes 2 hours by bus.

Parque Rural de Teno & Masca Valley

tenerife solo travel

Natural Park of Teno or Teno Rural Park is a range of mountains located at the very southwest of Tenerife. Both Los Gigantes and Masca Valley belong to this rural park. This is definitely the greenest part of the south and even though it is drier than Anaga, it has its western and exotic charms.

tenerife solo travel

Masca Gorge is also known for being the Machu Picchu of Tenerife, and there are several viewpoints in this area. The Natural Park of Teno offers its visitors breathtaking scenery and dozens of trails – unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information on how many exactly. If you appear to know, tell us in the comments below. The drive through this park was just fabulous. As I said, nature in Tenerife is just spectacular.

7. Getting Lost in the Northeast – Hiking up to El Semafóro

tenerife solo travel

Don’t worry, I didn’t really get lost out there! It is more a metaphor, as this part of the island is more remote and less touristy. This was probably my most ‘isolated’ or remote experience during my whole Tenerife solo travel, as I didn’t meet many other hikers on the trail. Even though it is very difficult to choose the best place I visited during this trip, if I really had to choose one, it would be El Semafóro.

tenerife solo travel

Hiking up El Semafóro – an old ruin of an abandoned traffic light. It was pretty brutal to get up there, but the constant views were pretty brutal too! It was on the second last day of my trip when I decided to go for this hike I’d discovered on Google only the night before. Furthermore, it is not such a famous hiking trail – the route is not even on Google and I found it only thanks to the beach I followed the first and then the cemetery which is nearby the trail.

How to Get to El Semafóro

tenerife solo travel

I took bus number 945 from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Igueste de San Andrés . Yes, it is the very same bus which takes you to Playa las Gaviotas. I got off at the last bus stop which is called exactly as the town itself and which was located next to a tiny plaza with a church . Here I needed to use Google Maps because there were several tiny pathways I could follow. However, if you carry on straight from the plaza towards the seas, you’ll notice a sign with El Semafóro on the left.

tenerife solo travel

As Google wasn’t really able to help me find the exact way to El Semafóro , I searched for Playa de Igueste, which was close to the trail. I walked to the beach, took some pictures and headed north to the cemeter y – as I thought the trail could start somewhere around it. As I was walking up the concrete stairs which lead to the cemetery, I noticed another sign on the left – and this was actually the start point of the trail.

tenerife solo travel

The surface of the trail is very slippery, made of soil and rocks . The route is quite steep, and the elevation is advanced. However, you can’t really get lost there because there is one and only trail which goes up and down. Once you find the entrance to the trail which is before the cemetery, you don’t need to worry about following any direction as there is only on – up!

A Few More Tips for the El Semafóro Hike

tenerife solo travel

You should take with you good hiking shoes, lots of water, some snacks, sunglasses and hat because there is barely a shadow up there and a device to make picture of the tremendous 360 degrees beauty what’s around you !

I made a mistake and hiked around 1pm, and this happened to be a very sunny and warm day. I’d suggest you do this hike in the morning or in the late afternoon, as it is basically a melting pot up there. After hiking up for 1 or 1.5 hours, depending on how many breaks you take, you reach the old abandoned traffic lights – El Semafóro.

tenerife solo travel

I didn’t have the balls to go any closer to this ruin, as I was hiking alone, and it looked very creepy. I doubt there are some monsters, criminals or aliens hiking, but it just didn’t feel right. This was one and only moment when I felt a bit scared during my whole Tenerife solo travel.

The way down takes obviously much less time because you move quicker but is a bit dangerous because the surface is once again very slippery so be careful out there!

To clarify your comment about the sand of Las Teresitas being fake, it’s true that it’s not from the island, but the sand is imported from the Sahara, and it’s very real! Thank you for this travel log!

' data-srcset=

Hello Sergio! Thank you for your comment. You are absolutely right. I will correct the information: the beach itself is artificial but the sand is not fake, yet indeed brought from Sahara. I wish you a nice day. Lenka

I have lived in Tenerife for 4 years and still not seen everything. I try and go somewhere different each week – but with their being over 3000km of hiking trails in total, and hundreds of small beaches, it may take many years to go everywhere. I live near Los Cristiano’s – but I prefer it in the north. Not much to see or do in the south unless you like eating and drinking in bars that are all the same. No scenery in the south.

Hello Matthew, thank you for the comment. Yes, it is a hiking paradise. Regarding the south, I can’t judge it as I never was there but Los Gigantes and Teide shall be worth it, right?

' data-srcset=

Great article, beautifully written and inspiring, thank you. I am heading out there in October with my bike, snorkel and trail running shoes. Did you consider hiking teide? I am only there for 7 days but want to do it all. I am wondering if it’s too busy or too hard? Thanks again.

Hello Rich 🙂 Thank you so much for the comment. I considered Teide, of course! But I didn’t want to hike it alone and all the guided trips from Santa Cruz were booked out. I do not drive so I would have to rely on buses and the north was so beautifuland there were so many things to do anyway! Have a great trip in October, give the Teide try and let us know how it is to hike it alone – is still on my bucket list 🙂

Budget-friendly, solo travel experience.

My first solo trip was to Tenerife and despite the sunstroke, it was really nice. All the locals were charming and extremely helpful.

lorena

It was my first solo trip, and I consider it the best decision to take that place as my first. First three days I rented a car and explored the island, it is just beautiful. Sunset, beaches, all clean, friendly people, good food, safe, roads nice, good hiking and peaceful. It was not that crowded too, except in Santa Cruz. After that I went to surf camp for 5 nights and that was amazing. Met amazing people, surfed for the first time and made a lot of beautiful memories. I would definitely recommend it!!

tenerife solo travel

Tenerife was my first place of solo travel and I wholeheartedly recommend it to others. In the south, it's warm with beautiful beaches, and in the north there is a lot of greenery where you can go hiking. I slept in a tent wherever I could, including on beaches, and nobody ever gave me problems because of it.

Is Tenerife safe for women?

You can walk with valuable jewellery or smartphone safely almost in every place of the island. There are some places such as el Fraile, San Isidro, Añaza or La cuesta (neighbourhood) that are a little less safe if you are not a local and you go there during the evening or night, but nothing serious in comparison to other "not that safe" places of Europe. In general you feel safe and welcomed. Locals are very kind.

Tenerife is very safe, rarely do things happen here. If you are responsible and careful, it is very likely that nothing will happen, it is a very safe island even in the early hours of the morning. I have been going out a lot alone, accompanied, in a group, with strangers, and nothing has ever happened to me.

Meet locals in Tenerife

Pilar

Hello! I am a very sociable and kind argentinian girl who works as an English and Spanish teacher and translator. I am arriving at Tenerife on December1st and I desperately need a place to stay, work and continue with my activities on the computer. I love reading, writing, and being around nature, especially the ocean. I don’t mind sharing room, I love animals and I’m keen on meeting new people. I would really appreciate this opportunity.

Pass for a local in Tenerife with these insider tips

With these top tips, it's easy to get the best out of a trip to Tenerife © Westend61 / Getty Images

Dominated by the sky-high summit of El Teide, Spain’s tallest peak, Tenerife evokes everything that makes Spain’s sun-dappled Canary Islands such an endlessly enticing destination.

Elegant ancient towns, lively ports and isolated mountain villages mingle amidst otherworldly volcanic landscapes, and the arts shine in the cultured capital, Santa Cruz , home of the country’s most fabulous carnival. Peaceful walking trails weave past mist-shrouded hills and magma-molded calderas, and along the Atlantic shoreline, waves wash onto volcanic-pebble beaches and shimmering natural sea pools.

You’ll need a good few days to truly explore this deliciously diverse island. Book all the essentials, from hiking permits to Michelin-star dining, well ahead – this is, after all, one of Europe’s favorite vacation playgrounds. Here’s everything you need to know for an unforgettable stay on Tenerife, the Canary Islands’ beloved grand dame.

Come in February for Carnaval, winter for sunny skies or spring for hiking

Tenerife’s big festival blowout is its three-week Carnaval – a nonstop, sequin-clad, Caribbean-influenced celebration that takes over the buzzy capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife each February. Hailed as one of Spain’s greatest carnivals, it’s an unmissable show, but expect soaring accommodation and flight prices. Be sure to book everything well ahead!

The warm winter months from December to February are the high season for northern Europeans seeking sunshine, while the hot summer (June to September) is a popular time for Spanish vacationers, particularly in August. The in-between months of October and November are usually quieter and cooler – around 25°C (77°F) on the coast – with good deals on accommodations, and there’s wonderful hiking through fields of spring wildflowers from March to May.

Booking hiking permits in advance

Tenerife’s top natural thrill is the chance to summit Spain’s tallest peak, 3718m (12,198ft) El Teide , located at the heart of the lunar-like Parque Nacional del Teide . The key thing to be aware of is that you’ll need a pre-booked permit to hike up to El Teide’s summit. Only 200 permits are issued each day, and hikers snap them up months in advance, so reserve as far ahead as possible.

To help with conservation efforts, two other standout hikes, the Barranco de Masca and the Barranco del Infierno (both following spectacular gorges in western Tenerife), also require permits. If you don’t manage to get one, the island has many other rewarding walking trails , from lesser-known routes through the haunting beauty of Teide National Park to paths through lush cloud forests in the Anaga mountains of northeast Tenerife.

Choose places to stay near the things you want to see

Though it’s possible to explore the island in a few days, choosing the right place to stay in Tenerife is key. The winding roads can unexpectedly tack hours onto driving times, so it’s worth being based close to the can’t-miss sights and attractions on your travel list.

The north coast is best for getting away from it all, with accommodations mostly in small towns dotted along the Atlantic shoreline. Elegant Garachico , for example, has two delicious boutique hotels in restored Canarian mansions: Hotel San Roque and La Quinta Roja .

Hikers will love the remote, pastel-painted villages of the Anaga mountains in the northeast, with their eerily beautiful cloud forests and independent accommodations. And anyone looking for a touch of urban buzz should consider Santa Cruz, where cultural delights include the boldly designed Tenerife Espacio de las Artes and Santiago Calatrava’s wave-shaped Auditorio de Tenerife . Alternatively, consider historic La Laguna , where La Laguna Gran Hotel brings a stylish touch to a centuries-old home.

Sunny southwest Tenerife is the preserve of top-end resorts bursting with facilities, many of which have a strong focus on sustainability. Near surfing-oriented El Médano, Casas Bioclimáticas ITER is a smart and innovative collection of carbon-free self-catering houses and villas, powered by solar and wind energy and designed by Tenerife’s Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables .

Reduce your carbon footprint by tapping into Tenerife's public transport network

The Canary Islands comprise a unique and fragile natural environment, but the roads are often congested, and car rental is pricey because of limited availability, especially in the peak season. With a little planning, you can rein in your carbon footprint by tapping into efficient guagua (bus) services across the island or renting an electric car.

The Titsa Ten+Movil app has a range of bus passes for easy island travel, and you can also buy single-journey tickets on the app. Otherwise, you’ll need cash for most buses. You don't have to use a motor vehicle – exploring by cycling, hiking and kayaking is a delight (and perfect for viewing the dramatic Los Gigantes cliffs) and the capital is also best enjoyed on foot.

Book ahead for Tenerife’s best restaurants

Tenerife is making quite a name for itself on Spain’s gastronomic scene. Tempting offerings swing from fuss-free seafood shacks on the beach and vegan cafes packed with local produce to restaurants serving avant-garde tasting-menus, hidden away in romantic hotels. Reserve a table a few weeks in advance at the fanciest spots, such as Michelin-starred El Rincón de Juan Carlos in Caleta, run by the tinerfeño Padrón brothers, or Martín Berasategui’s M.B. at the Ritz-Carlton Abama, boasting two Michelin stars and headed by respected chef Erlantz Gorostiza.

Expand your horizons to neighboring Canary Islands

With its two international airports and excellent ferry links, Tenerife is the main gateway to the three smaller, less-touristed western Canary Islands – bohemian La Gomera , lush La Palma and rustic El Hierro . Each of these makes a rewarding, slow-moving contrast to Tenerife and can be easily added on as a side trip.

From Los Cristianos in southwest Tenerife, regular ferries run to Santa Cruz de la Palma (3½ hours), El Hierro’s Puerto de la Estaca (2¾ hours) and San Sebastián de la Gomera (1 hour). It’s also possible to day-trip to La Gomera by ferry, though you’ll inevitably end up wishing you could stay longer.

Woman on the beach at Playa de la Teresitas, Tenerife

Dress however you like, but respect local attitudes

When it comes to dress, anything goes on this soulful, sun-drenched island, but pack sunscreen, a hat and other protection from the strong rays. Plenty of people go topless on the beach, and lots of nudist strands are dotted around the island. That said, it’s respectful to cover up a little when you head away from the sand – so no bare chests in the town center!

Dress modestly when visiting religious buildings, such as churches or chapels. It’s also impolite to visit churches for tourism during religious services. For buildings that are only open for mass, stop in before the service starts.

Make advance reservations to taste Tenerife's volcanic wines

One of Tenerife’s great joys is discovering the cultural wonderland beyond the Atlantic-washed coast, a sprawl of pastel-walled villages clinging to lush slopes covered in banana-palm plantations. Book a vineyard tour to learn all about the island’s wine-making scene, which revolves around local pre-phylloxera grape varieties and the hugely varied microclimates in these rich, volcanic mountainscapes. Most tinerfeño wine is consumed directly on the island, so sample freely while you’re here and show your support for local winemakers by taking home a bottle or three!

Close to Granadilla de Abona in southwest Tenerife, Bodega Frontos is a sustainably focused, family-run operation with more than 50 years of organic wine-making experience. Grapes are grown up to 1700m (5577ft), making this Europe’s most elevated winery.

Support local producers and craftworkers while in Tenerife

From herb-infused cosmetics to volcanic wines, Tenerife’s most inspired souvenirs revolve around one-of-a-kind gifts that support small-scale producers, independent shops and local island artisans. Start in lively Santa Cruz, where the fabulous TEA gift shop is a great spot to pick up creative pieces such as notebooks, prints and art books with a local twist.

Just across the road, the mid-20th-century Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África is a fresh-food wonderland crammed with Canarian cheeses, North African spices, artisanal olive oils, palm honey and other local favorites. A few streets away, you’ll find more gourmet cheeses with a Canarian focus at Queso Project .

Pilot whales surfacing in open ocean near Tenerife

Do your research on ethical whale-watching in Tenerife

Sprawling across 2000 sq km of Atlantic Ocean, Europe’s first Whale Heritage Site was established in 2021 off the coasts of Tenerife and its sister island La Gomera, highlighting how the Canary Islands are prioritizing responsible whale-watching. The islands' famous underwater residents include bottlenose dolphins and short-finned pilot whales.

Before you come, read up on how to be a responsible wildlife tourist , and book your whale-watching trips ahead with a low-impact tour company that has a sustainable ethos and a focus on animal welfare. Led by a switched-on team of marine biologists, Biosean runs small-group expeditions that contribute important research on the local whale populations.

Don’t build stone towers on the beach

In recent years, legions of pebble or stone towers have popped up on beaches around Tenerife, particularly on Adeje ’s Playa El Beril and Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz , with people rushing to share images of the curious structures on social media. Local environmentalists are now campaigning for a ban on these manmade cairns because they disrupt natural coastal ecosystems and can be lethal to local wildlife such as insects, plants, reptiles and birds in a region already under pressure from tourism. Do your part by joining beach clean-ups and by leaving the rocks where they lie.

Pack for the endless array of Canarian microclimates

The Canary Islands are famous for their wonderfully varied microclimates, and nowhere channels this more spectacularly than Tenerife. You can be basking in the sun on a beach on the southwest coast and then an hour later be reaching for a jacket up in the misty mountains.

Pack for a range of temperatures and conditions, and factor in the weather when planning outdoor excursions, particularly high-altitude mountain hikes. Altitude sickness is a potential risk for anyone hiking above 2500m (8200ft), which includes El Teide; the vast majority of visitors have no problems, but take it slowly.

A hiker in a volcanic landscape on El Teide, Tenerife

Be aware of natural dangers on the island

The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the neighboring island of La Palma, which lasted 85 days in 2021, drew global attention to some of the natural challenges faced by the Canary Islands. As well as volcanic activity, limited rainfall can sometimes lead to forest fires during the summer months. In the unlikely event of an emergency, follow advice from local authorities including the Cabildo de Tenerife . There’s a single phone number for all emergencies, 112.

Watch out for rip tides when swimming on Tenerife’s beaches and in its natural pools. The Atlantic can have seriously strong currents, so it’s important to heed local advice; a red flag means it’s unsafe to enter the water. For the natural sea pools, it’s best to visit at low tide because high tides and turbulent weather can make them dangerous.

Keep valuables safe and check your health insurance

Most trips to Tenerife are entirely hassle-free, though like anywhere, petty theft can happen, particularly in bigger towns. Keep an eye on your belongings in tourist-heavy locations such as markets and bus stations and never leave valuables unattended on the beach.

The free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles all EU citizens to healthcare at local cost (which often means no cost) in other EU countries, including Spain. If you’re from a non-EU country, find out whether there’s any reciprocal medical care agreement with Spain; if not, ensure you have suitable health insurance or travel insurance cover.

Can you drink the tap water in Tenerife?

People in the Canary Islands tend to buy bottled water because much of the tap water here is desalinated sea water – it's safe to drink but not particularly pleasant taste-wise. Some hotels and restaurants provide their own large water containers so you can refill reusable bottles, and Tenerife’s airports also have drinking fountains. As of April 2022, all bars and restaurants in Spain (including the Canaries) are legally required to offer free agua de grifo (tap water) for drinking.

Exploring Tenerife: Solo Traveler’s Guide to Safety and Adventure

Many people dream of traveling to exotic destinations and experiencing new adventures. One popular destination that often comes to mind is Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, known for its stunning landscapes, golden beaches, and vibrant nightlife. However, for those considering a solo trip, one question often arises: Is it safe to travel to Tenerife alone?

Tenerife, like any other tourist destination, has its own set of safety considerations. It is essential to conduct proper research and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while traveling alone. To help you make an informed decision, let’s explore various aspects of safety in Tenerife.

Crime rates in Tenerife, particularly in tourist areas, are relatively low compared to other popular vacation spots. The local government takes significant measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. However, like any other place, petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft can occur. Travelers should exercise the same level of caution they would in any unfamiliar location, such as keeping an eye on their belongings and avoiding isolated or poorly lit areas at night.

Tenerife is known for its bustling tourist areas, such as Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, which are filled with hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options. These areas are generally safe, with a vibrant atmosphere that attracts a diverse range of tourists. However, it’s important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings, especially during busy periods when pickpocketing incidents may be more common.

When it comes to personal safety, Tenerife benefits from a well-developed infrastructure and reliable emergency services. The island has modern hospitals and medical facilities that can provide necessary healthcare to tourists in case of emergencies. It is advisable to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, as accidents and unexpected illnesses can happen to anyone.

Transportation in Tenerife is generally safe and reliable. The island has an extensive network of buses, taxis, and rental cars, making it convenient for solo travelers to explore different areas. However, it is important to ensure you are using licensed and reputable transportation services. Avoid unmarked taxis and use official taxi ranks or ride-sharing apps to ensure your safety.

One of the advantages of traveling alone in Tenerife is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. The locals are known for their hospitality and friendliness towards tourists. However, it is crucial to exercise caution when interacting with strangers, especially at night or in isolated areas. Trust your instincts and rely on the advice and recommendations of knowledgeable locals or trusted travel resources.

In terms of natural hazards, Tenerife is prone to occasional volcanic activity as it is home to Mt. Teide, the highest peak in Spain. However, the volcanic activity is closely monitored, and precautions are taken to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. It’s always advisable to stay informed about any potential risks and heed the advice of local authorities and experts.

To summarize, while no destination can guarantee absolute safety, Tenerife is generally considered safe for solo travelers. By taking necessary precautions, being alert to your surroundings, and following common-sense safety practices, you can enjoy a memorable and worry-free experience on this beautiful island. As always, it’s advisable to stay informed about the local conditions, follow travel advisories, and consult with reliable sources before embarking on your journey.

Is it safe to travel to Tenerife alone: Conclusions

In this article, we have learned about the safety of traveling to Tenerife alone. We have discussed the low crime rate on the island, the presence of tourist police, and the overall welcoming and friendly nature of the locals. It is clear that Tenerife is a safe destination for solo travelers.

However, it is important to always take necessary precautions when traveling alone, such as staying in well-lit areas, avoiding isolated places at night, and being aware of your surroundings. Additionally, it is recommended to inform someone of your itinerary and to keep important documents and valuables secure.

In conclusion, while traveling alone to any destination can come with its own set of risks, Tenerife provides a safe environment for solo travelers. With its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, Tenerife is a perfect destination for those seeking a solo adventure.

There are several different Canary Islands, with each one having a distinct personality. If you want to visit but are unsure where to go, check out this guide to the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands are these nature abundant, beautiful islands located only a few hours flight from mainland Europe. They stay fairly warm all year round, so they’re a very popular destination to escape the winter in Europe .

Are the Canary Islands part of Spain?

The Canary Islands or, ‘Islas Canarias’, are part of Spain, although very separated. While people speak Spanish there, the accent is very different from mainland Spain (some people compare it to a Cuban or Venezuelan accent). Typical Spanish food is still abundant, but you’ll find other, more specific Canarian varieties.

Where are the Canary Islands located?

The Canary Islands are located off the coast of Morocco to the west. For this reason, they tend to stay fairly warm all year round.

What is solo travel like in the Canary Islands?

Although many families and couples travel to the Canary Islands, it’s still easy and pretty common to travel solo.

You may not always be able to find a bustling hostel with daily activities, but there are many people coming to the Canary Islands to surf or travel alone. If you’re traveling solo, rent a moped or a car to discover each island more in depth.

Is it safe to solo travel in the Canary Islands?

The Canary Islands are very safe. As a woman, I never felt unsafe walking home at night, no matter what time.

The only thing I would say to watch out for is when you’re drinking and going out to bars alone. Be careful, watch your drink and your valuables, and you should be fine!

Guide to the Canary Islands: The bigger islands

Gran canaria.

sunset in gran canaria

Gran Canaria is one of the biggest islands in the Canaries, with a bustling capital city and a variety of landscapes.

In the northwest you will find forest and mountainous terrain. In the south, the natural beaches and dunes of Maspalomas. Gran Canaria has such a vast variety of terrain that there’s something for everyone!

I found Gran Canaria to have more of a chill, kind of hippy vibe than some of the other islands. There were many other solo travelers, and I was able to find people to split a car with me, although the island has pretty great public transportation.

In Las Palmas – HiTide House In the center of the city and right by the beach with seaside views

On top of the mountain – Mountain Hostel Finca La Isa For a more rural and outdoorsy experience in Gran Canaria

Best time to visit Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is fairly moderate all year round, although in winter and early spring you may find quite a bit of wind and rain in the north. In the south at Maspalomas though, it is mostly sunshine all year round so you’re free to have the variety! I would recommend late spring or early/late autumn as the best time to visit Gran Canaria.

Tenerife is also another one of the biggest islands and consequently has a lot of variety too.

In the south, you’ll find a bit more commercial and touristy, although still plenty of hidden gems. Personally, I love the south (Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas) because there’s great restaurants and always something to do, plus close proximity to everything! Also in the south, you can find El Médano, which is a small fishing village popular for windsurfing and for digital nomads.

The north is hilly with many national parks and the main city of Puerto de la Cruz. Still touristy, but also a bit more local. I especially love the black sand beaches of Playa de Benijo and the village vibes at Garachico.

The center of the island holds the volcano of El Teide, surrounded by lava fields and an amazing national park and forest. Perfect for exploring the island of Tenerife by motorcycle or by car.

Finally, the town of Santa Cruz is the biggest city in all the islands if you need some shopping or nightlife.

You could spend ages hiking and exploring various beaches and natural pools in Tenerife.

As a solo traveler, I find Tenerife to be the easiest to find accommodation and make friends, simply because it’s so big! The island is also well connected by public transport, so you don’t always need to rent something, unless of course you want to do some exploring on your own!

In the south (Costa Adeje) – Endless Summer Hostel Easy walking distance to the city and different beaches

El Médano – Casa Grande Surf Hostel Great for surfing and/or windsurfing

In the north – Puerto Nest Hostel Right outside the city of Puerto de la Cruz

Best time to visit Tenerife

Tenerife is probably the hottest island, so you can really visit it all year round! I would avoid the summer though, as the crowds, especially in the south, get a bit crazy!

view over lanzarote, mirador del rio

Lanzarote is an island famous for surfing and windsurfing, but still holds so much more!

Lanzarote is a a bit smaller and more quiet than Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It’s a very volcanic island, with some parts making you feel like you’re on the moon! The island is mostly desert like, with many craters and cool rock formations. You’ll find some amazing beaches, such as Papagayo in the national park, and can visit all the small villages around or go wine tasting.

You will likely need to rent a car or a motorbike to explore the island, as public transport can be a bit dodgy depending where you’re staying. However, the rentals are super cheap here!

The northern part of the island is great for surfing and kite surfing, whereas the south is a bit more commercial and holds the biggest town: Arrecife (meaning coral reef in Spanish!)

I made some friends at my hostel as a solo traveler, although most people are coming for surf lessons!

papagayo beach lanzarote

Where to stay in Lanzarote for solo travelers

In the south – La Casita de Arrecife Inside the biggest city of Lanzarote with easy access to the beach

For surfing – Surf House Famara A hostel and surf school in the north

Best time to visit Lanzarote

Lanzarote is very windy so if you’re not surfing, you may want to wait closer to the summer months to visit. The sun makes the whole island hot, but the wind will make you want to cover up.

The south of the island is less windy, so you’ll have more luck with chilling on the beach there. For surfers and kite surfers, spring and fall are great times to visit.

Fuerteventura

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Canary Islands 🇮🇨 | Hotels | Food | Tips (@canaryislands.explore)

Fuerteventura is the second biggest island of the Canary Islands. It’s fairly flat and desert like, with so many world class beaches to explore. Fuerteventura is also a favorite for water sports, like surfing and kite surfing, and there are many things to do in Corralejo , the biggest city on the island.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura for solo travelers

For surfing – Wellenkind Surf School Hostel and surf school in the southern part of the island

Inside Corralejo – Kaktus Beach House Basic hostel in the city center and near the beach

Late spring and early summer are great times to enjoy the sunshine before the island gets too hot for the high season.

What are the smaller islands?

La graciosa.

la graciosa island

Right off the coast of Lanzarote, this small island is a haven for sailboats, with pristine white beaches and turquoise blue water.

la gomera canary island

La Gomera is a smaller island, very close to Tenerife and very popular for day trips! However, most people only explore the island on a day tour, and they’re sorely missing out! La Gomera is mountainous and heavily forested, making for great hikes and road trips.

el hierro canary island

El Hierro is the smallest Canary Island, but no less beautiful! It’s a bit further from the rest of the islands but still well worth visiting if you have the time!

la palma canary island

La Palma is another beautiful island, the furthest north, that offers amazing nature– even being recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve! There is an airport on La Palma so it’s a bit easier to reach than the other small islands. Visit the island yourself to discover how it got its nickname “ Isla Bonita “.

The Golden Rules of Solo Travel

By Olivia Morelli

Image may contain Person Walking Grass Plant Outdoors Nature Scenery Landscape Art Mountain and Mountain Range

The joys of traveling solo are endless. It is freeing to explore new places alone—you can go where you please, eat when you want, and enjoy quality time with yourself uninterrupted. The interest in solo travel has been slowly rising for a while, in tandem with the desire for deeper, slower, more connective trave l. For many, solo travel is the perfect way to achieve this—it provides an opportunity to trust your instinct, go with your gut, and get lost in the experience. You rely on yourself rather than on others’ whims or desires.

But, if you’re not a seasoned solo traveler, it can be a daunting prospect. In an age of constant connectivity, the idea of being alone for an extended period of time is stark. Below, we spoke to travelers who frequently book solo trips about their golden rules for traveling alone.

Dining alone isn’t weird

For most people, the thought of dining alone is one of the biggest barriers to traveling solo. But once you get past the conviction that everyone is noticing or judging you, it’s a totally freeing experience. “Dining alone isn’t as uncommon as you might imagine,” says Estée Lalonde, a creative director and influencer with a passion for solo travel. “I personally find it empowering! Sometimes I bring a book with me or watch an episode of my favorite show on Netflix with my headphones on, but other times I just enjoy the atmosphere and end up chatting to the people at the table next to me.”

Book counter dining at restaurants if it's too weird for you

If you are someone who does feel uncomfortable about dining alone, opt for a bar or counter seat. It’s much less intimidating than having a whole table to yourself, and you are more likely to end up chatting to the staff or the person sitting next to you. "The first time I went out for a meal alone, I went to JG Melon on the Upper East Side of New York City ,” Sarah James, Condé Nast Traveller ’s deputy digital editor, says. “I took a book, and nervously shuffled onto a bar stool for my burger—but ended up chatting away to the charming bartender and the women sat next to me. Now I often opt for a counter seat when eating alone, and no longer take a book with me. Either I end up talking to someone or just enjoy the peace. A general rule I live by—we're all so wrapped up in our own lives, no one is paying much attention to other people."

Consider a hostel

Not only are hostels affordable, but they're also great places to meet fellow travelers—whether they're in the same solo boat as you or not. Many have a cheap bar onsite that allows you to fall into natural conversation with compatriots who may become friends, or at least will have great tips for things to do.

Fake it till you make it

Most people feel nervous about meeting new people, and introverts especially struggle to make the first move when in a new place. But remember that everyone is in the same boat, and most solo travelers will have experienced those same emotions. The first five seconds are the hardest, but once you’ve introduced yourself, you’ll quickly realize it wasn’t as big a deal as you originally thought. You’d kick yourself if you let a bit of shyness ruin your trip, so use that as the motivation you need to approach a fellow traveler. And remember, if you present with confidence, that will show—fake it til you make it is a reliable life rule to follow.

Never consolidate all of your assets

“This is a lesson that I learned the hard way after getting pickpocketed in a crowded Jerusalem marketplace,” says global digital director Arati Menon, “I had stupidly carried all my credit cards and cash with me—luckily no passport!—in a single wallet and as a result, had no way of paying the hotel bill later that day when I checked out. Now, I always split my cards and cash (and IDs) across various places: wallet, purse, luggage—and if possible, store at least one of these in a locked safe back at the hotel.”

Don’t fear loneliness

“Remember that a bit of loneliness can be bracing and character-building,” says Toby Skinner, Condé Nast Traveller ’s features director. “My experience traveling is generally that people are decent, kind and interesting—and you found that out most acutely by being alone (whereas everyone leaves couples well alone.) Some of my most memorable travel experiences have been on my own—like when I was stranded in Nanjing at 2 a.m. by a delayed train in 2001, and a local student let me bunk in his dorm room for the night.”

Take the train

“While even the most extroverted of travelers avoid chit chat like the plague on a plane, I have found traveling by train to be a much more social means of transport," says associate editor Hannah Towey. "Last summer, I traveled solo on the Amtrak Coastal Starlight from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and spent the entirety of the 9-hour journey in the communal observation lounge, where fellow travelers rotated in and out, sharing tables and playing cards while admiring the views. As the sun set on the second half of the trip, a few musically-inclined passengers formed an impromptu band complete with an acoustic guitar and mandolin. Word slowly spread and others trickled in from other parts of the train to take turns singing songs in different languages. It might take a few more hours than a flight, but who knows, you might even find the Ethan Hawke to your Julie Delpy and spend a spontaneous evening together in Vienna.”

Plan around cultural events

Arriving at a destination just as the locals are gearing up for an important cultural event can be an incredible way to immerse yourself straight away. Look up religious festivals, bank holidays, and street parties to see what time is best to visit and plan accordingly. You’ll get a real flavor of the people, the food, and even the music, and you might end up making friends along the way.

Research solo travel in your destination

As obvious as “do your research” sounds, it’s an important step to remember. Look at online forums and speak to people who have previously visited the destination. What safety precautions should you be taking? Is it safe to walk between locations, or is it better to use taxis? Are taxis easy to find? What is the destination's culture like after dark? For women, in particular, it is best to plan ahead to avoid getting stranded in remote neighborhoods after dark.

Have a rough plan for each day

It can feel daunting waking up in a brand new destination and not knowing where to start, so make sure to create vague itineraries for your trip. What are your non-negotiables in this destination? Any big attractions you want to tick off? Restaurants you’ve been desperate to try? Beaches you’ve always wanted to visit? “I like to have 3-5 little activities in mind for each day, like visiting a particular store or trying the local cuisine,” Estée tells us. “If you have a bit of direction you can leave space in between each activity to be spontaneous and discover the local area.”

Build in group activities

Booking tours and group events is a great way to meet other travelers. Most hostels have a list of activities available for guests to sign up for, and if not, then there are walking tours or live music events at local bars. “Try to see people as opportunities," Toby advises. “I'd build in communal activities to your itinerary and remember that you’ll probably never see these people again, so you have nothing to lose in almost any interaction and possibly a lot to gain—though there might be a touch of male privilege in that.”

Walk as much as you can

“Sometimes when I travel to a new place, I can be nervous to leave my bed as a solo traveler,” Estée admits. “As soon as I get outside and start walking I feel better—like I’m part of the city and that I belong there!” Exploring by foot is a great way to get to know the bones of a destination. You’ll soon create a mental map of the area nearest your accommodation and might stumble upon some hidden gems you wouldn’t have come across otherwise.

Allow yourself to be spontaneous

On that note, try to allow yourself some spontaneity. Having a rough plan is definitely advisable, but don’t stop yourself from following your gut if you have a sudden urge to pop into a shop, follow the sound of the crowds or head for the beach. It’s often the spur-of-the-moment decisions that result in the best experiences.

Bring good books

It’s easy to whip out your phone and rely on scrolling when you’re by yourself, and while that is a great way to decompress if you’re feeling jittery, there are few things more romantic than settling in at a street-side cafe and getting lost in the pages of a good book .

Bring a journal

Journaling has become a popular pastime of late, and keeping a travel journal is a great way to combine the mental health benefits of getting out your thoughts and feelings with the memories and emotions of traveling solo. “I find all of that time alone enables me to clear my head, and journaling is a great way to regulate those emotions,” Estée explains.

Keep a separate copy of your personal details

Sounds old school, but in lieu of printing out paper copies of all your bank details, phone numbers, and accommodations details, try keeping a document of all your information and emailing it to yourself. This way, if you lose your phone, you can ask the reception of your accommodation or staff at a hotel/restaurant/bar to borrow a phone and log into your email account to access anything you need. It’s also worth memorizing your card details and any emergency phone numbers (both personal and local emergency service numbers).

Take other safety precautions

There are plenty of ways to protect yourself when traveling alone. Sharing your location with your friends and family back home is a lovely way to keep in touch without having to actually message them—they can watch your journey from afar and keep track of your whereabouts if you haven’t contacted them for a while. Remember to bring a padlock for your backpack and lockers if you’re staying in hostels, and study basic phrases in the language of your destination, just in case you get lost and need some help.

Don’t forget insurance

There’s always something that doesn’t go to plan on any trip, and as a solo traveler, you’ll want to make sure you mitigate any stress that comes from changing itineraries. Buying travel insurance is the best way to protect yourself from any transport cancellations and unforeseen circumstances, and will cover any costs from injuries or thefts. Sounds scary, but it’ll be worth it if the worst happens!

I've Traveled Alone to 65 Countries – Here Are My Top 5 Destinations for Flying Solo

Where to find adventure, group activities, affordable luxury hotels, and total relaxation as a solo traveler.

Katie Jackson/Travel + Leisure

Lewis may have needed Clark, but for most trips, I think it’s OK to be a party of one. In fact, my favorite style of travel, # solotravel , is now trending on TikTok and in real life. But if there’s anything I’ve learned from adventuring alone in 65 countries, it’s this: some countries cater to lone wolves better than others. Whether you’re looking to lay on the beach, climb a volcano, or explore the big city, here are my top five destinations for flying solo.

Giacomo Augugliaro/Getty Images

Western Europe’s most affordable country, Portugal has been my second home since 2016. Whether in Alentejo or the Algarve, I can always find a €2 glass of wine and five-star hotels, including IHG’s new Vignette Collection properties in Porto and Lisbon , for under €200 per night. It’s the fifth safest country in Europe, according to the Institute for Economics & Peace 2023 Global Peace Index (for comparison, Spain ranked 23rd and France 34th) and is home to the world’s largest standing wave. Since surfing solo is dangerous, I go with Onda Pura . In Lisbon , visit the Oceanário , voted the world’s best aquarium . Alone, you can linger at exhibits for as long as you want. I’ve traveled the country by train and bus, but I recommend renting a car for as little as €25 per day. Pro tip: Learn how to drive manual first.

South Africa

Katie Jackson/Travel + Leisure

While it’s not the safest country on the Mother Continent, ranking 32nd in Sub-Saharan Africa in the Global Peace Index , South Africa is the easiest for Americans to visit. United Airlines offers nonstop service from multiple U.S. cities to Cape Town, English is widely spoken, and there are restaurants catering to every diet. I use Facebook to join group hikes and dinners and Airbnb to book guided, local experiences. I recommend doing the “From Prisoner to President Tour” hosted by Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard and friend, Christo Brand . To visit the wineries, take the Franschhoek Tram . I’ve also enjoyed solo safaris. Alone, you can choose your start time (I hate waking up at 5:30 a.m. for game drives), and you always have the best seat. During low season, some lodges waive the single supplement. Year-round, the new Loapi Tented Camp only charges solo travelers 62% of what it would charge a couple. For travel within the country, book a package with a company like Kensington Tours ; it includes all transfers.

Since I lived in Nicaragua, I have an impressive collection of passport stamps from Costa Rica . It’s the safest place in Central America , and it offers everything from volcano trekking to beach hopping on two incredible coastlines. I want to check out the new SP Corcovado Wilderness Lodge , which hosts wellness retreats and is part of the Red Sofia Program (designed to make travel safer for single women). Meanwhile, in Monteverde, solo travelers can’t go wrong at Hotel Belmar where you don’t have to venture off site for adventure (book the canopy immersion and coffee tasting). For an all-inclusive, I recommend Secrets Papagayo .  It’s not the place to stay if you don't want to be around couples, but it’s adults-only and hosts theme nights, beach games, and cocktail parties where singles can mingle.

FilippoBacci/Getty Images

Good news! You don’t need to be with a romantic partner to visit the Maldives . I solo-mooned there and had a blast falling back in love with me, myself, and I. Highlights include visiting Coco Palm Dhuni Kohlu’s turtle rescue center , reading by my plunge pool (“Eat, Pray, Love” is a must for solo travelers), and when I wanted company, hitting up the beach barbecues. You also don’t have to be a millionaire. The island of Maafushi caters to backpackers, and even at a resort, I stayed under $350 per day. Have a bigger budget? Consider booking the Gili Solo Experience . Boasting an underwater suite and restaurant, the Conrad Maldives is also on my list. For flights, try Emirates ; round-trip fares from New York's JFK to Malé start at $1,265.

Not having anyone to split expenses with, domestic travel is cheapest. I explore my backyard in Montana where I staycate at Lone Mountain Ranch . With its queen bed, the Meadowlark Cabin is ideal for one, and the group activities offer opportunities to socialize. For an urban escape, I prefer New York City , where I stay at NH Collection New York Madison Avenue . Its lobby has a community table, fireplaces, and live jazz most nights. Since there’s no shame in doing the Great White Way without a date, I went to see “ The Notebook ” in April. Finding one center orchestra seat is easier than finding seats together. For getting around, use the MTA’s new OMNY credit/debit card tap program ; it’s the best value.

Whether you’re hoping to make new connections, try off-the-beaten-path experiences, or simply unwind, a solo vacation can open up new possibilities—and Fort Myers and surrounding areas are a dreamy place for it. Single-traveler trips were up by 36 percent in 2023 and 54 percent of U.S. travelers are looking to venture on their own within the following year, but not all destinations are created equal when it comes to going it alone. A place where you have your choice of experiences in nature, plus perspective-shifting opportunities through food, art, and more, makes for an ideal setting when you travel by yourself.

From the historic River District to miles of pristine coastline, the islands, beaches and neighborhoods of Fort Myers are perfect for solo travelers in search of adventure and culture. Collect seashells on Sanibel Island , the “Seashell Capital of the World.” Take a hands-on art class at Cape Coral Art Center . Sip your way along the Southwest Florida Ale Trail . These experiences around Fort Myers are just as accessible and fun for those traveling alone.

Whole seashells along the shoreline

Positioned on the Gulf of Mexico, the white-sand beaches in the greater Fort Myers area are nothing short of a tropical paradise. Wake up early to collect intact seashells at low tide along the shoreline of Bowman’s Beach or Blind Pass on Sanibel Island , dubbed the “Seashell Capital of the World” due to the 400-plus types of shells that wash up on the shore every day.

Next, visit Lovers Key State Park , a great location for a solo beach day or a kayak or paddleboard excursion. Gear up with rental watercraft from the concession and cruise along 2.5 miles of unspoiled shoreline.

Immerse yourself in arts and culture in the River District and Cape Coral

Murals at McCollum Hall in Fort Myers

From live theater performances and fine art exhibitions to intimate concerts and tropical gardens, Fort Myers offers many ways to discover local culture. Take a walk through the historic downtown River District to admire a 57-piece mural project from 39 different artists depicting the area’s history or stroll down charming streets and pop into galleries on the first Friday of every month during Fort Myers Art Walk. On the third Friday of every month, music fans can listen to public performances from strolling musicians and free indoor concerts.

In the charming waterfront community of Cape Coral , you can take a hands-on art class in anything from silversmithing to oil painting at Cape Coral Art Center or visit its onsite Fine Art Gallery. Over the past couple of years, the town has even created an outdoor art project featuring art-wrapped utility boxes designed by 15 local artists. Drive around Downtown Cape Coral along Southeast 47th Terrace to spot vibrant depictions of butterflies, sea turtles, and pint-sized burrowing owls, a rare, adorable species that is celebrated at the Burrowing Owl Festival in Cape Coral every February.

Savor fresh seafood and craft beer along the Gulf

Fresh stone crab

From Gulf shrimp to seasonal stone crabs and grouper, fresh seafood is a staple of the greater Fort Myers culinary scene. Enjoy waterfront dining at restaurants like The Dixie Fish Co. , which dates back to 1937 when it was primarily a fish market. Today, it still exudes local charm, with a tin roof and live music.

In recent years, Fort Myers has also earned a reputation for its craft beer and liquor. Sip your way along the coast as you follow the Southwest Florida Ale Trail , or go behind the scenes during a tour of Wicked Dolphin , a small-batch rum and vodka distillery.

Discover pristine parks and preserves

The boardwalk at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

Solo travelers will find peace and tranquility in protected natural settings located throughout Fort Myers’ islands, beaches and neighborhoods. Enjoy a guided nature walk through wetland and upland ecosystems in the 3,400-acre Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve .

At Harns Marsh Preserve Loop, visitors can spot wildlife such as wading birds in their natural habitat. It’s also one of the only places where the threatened snail kite bird of prey can be seen outside of the Everglades. Try Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve , the second-largest preserved green space in Cape Coral, to stroll or kayak through another birding paradise with potential eagle, ibis, and heron sightings.
