Step inside a luxury safari at the stone-faced Voi Safari Lodge, an exquisite safari destination within Kenya’s popular Tsavo East National Park . The lodge boasts beautiful views over open savannas with water holes that see frequent wildlife come to drink, its location upon rocks and amid attractive gardens, prominently set within the wilderness. The restaurant is large and spherical in shape, serving both incredible views and delicious meals. There is a relaxing lounge area and the lodge has three bars on site. The main bar is situated on the lodge’s terrace, the pool bar offering refreshing drinks next to refreshing waters and the Hyrax Bar on offer for private functions and conferences.

There are 53 modern safari rooms offering views over the Tsavo East National Park, neat in design and content, perfect for a night of rest after a day on safari. Guests can enjoy watching animals from the photo hide located at the lodge and find that perfect souvenir in the little gift shop. The conference centre is perfect for those who need to hold meetings while in the bush.

Rooms / Tents

The 53 rooms at Voi Safari Lodge are spacious and modern, decorated in a mix of neutral colours and colourful splashes depicting local Masai and Swahili influences. All rooms face the savannah and offer views over the water holes, a perfect setup to watch animals come and drink at any time of the day or night. All rooms are en-suite with showers, sinks and toilets, with amenities for guests to use during their stay.

Bedding can be made up as King Size, Twin, or Triple, which would comprise a double bed and a single. The bedrooms have a small writing desk, a comfortable chair, Wi-Fi, electric fans and mineral water. On request, a fridge, tea and coffee-making facilities as well as a safety deposit box can be put in the room.

Comfortable Lounge

Main terrace bar, spherically-shaped restaurant, hyrax private bar, swimming pool, photographic hide, barbeque facilities, conference facilities, spa facilities, game viewing / activities.

Game drives in the Tsavo East National Park are spectacular with chances to see plenty of wildlife from elephants to lions and a myriad of antelope. Game drives are usually conducted early in the morning or late afternoon and there is the option to enjoy a guided bush walk which will get you a little closer to nature.

Hot Air Balloon rides are popular in the area and for something a little different, horse riding in parts of the Park is a fantastic alternative. Guests can visit a local Masai village and learn about tradition and culture and what has changed in daily living, today. Combine safari and sea with a visit to the Highlands of Wundanyi where you can capture beautiful views over the coastline.

View Nairobi - Nairobi Safaris

View nairobi - mombasa safaris, view all kenya safaris, tanzania safaris frequently asked questions, when is the best time to visit tanzania.

The best times to visit Tanzania are December through March or June through October during the dry seasons, when the game viewing is at its best. The rains usually last from April to May then occur again in November when there are fewer tourists and vegetation flourishes. During February, wildebeest are calving, giving you a front row seat to the baby's first moments in the savannah.

How much does a safari in Tanzania cost?

A mid-range safari with lodging runs $350 to $400 per person, per day while a high end luxury safari with all the trimmings ranges from $600 to about $1000 per person, per day. Read more about safari costs for Tanzania.

Kenya or Tanzania: which is better for safari?

Both countries are reputed for outstanding game viewing. Tanzania’s jaw-dropping Mount Kilimanjaro, sweeping coffee plantations and the exotic island of Zanzibar make it unique from its northern neighbor, while Kenya's lush green landscapes make it a bit less tropical, climate-wise. The two countries are frequently combined into a single journey, given their proximity to each other and the fact that they are both locations for the must-see Great Migration. Read more about whether Kenya or Tanzania is better for a safari .

When and what is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is a wildlife spectacle, sometimes called The Greatest Show on Earth by safari enthusiasts, during which hundreds of wildebeest and other mammals head towards greener grazing pastures during East Africa's dry season. It is heavily dependent on the weather, specifically the rain which brings new vegetation upon which the wildebeest feed. Generally-speaking, herds are in the Serengeti from November to May. In May, as the grass dries up, herds begin the 500-mile migration north and by June they are in the greener plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. They usually stay here until October. From January on, they alternate between woodlands and plains, depending on the weather. In anticipation of the short rains—and the greener grasslands that come with it—the herds begin their trek down to the Serengeti. In November and December, they arrive to a flourishing green landscape where they stay until the cycle begins again.

Uganda Safari & Gorilla Trekking FAQs

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.

Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.

Natural World Kenya Safaris offers Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Uganda with basic accommodations starting at $96 per person, per day, plus the Uganda gorilla trekking permit which costs $700 per person per day (the permits are required, and those fees are non-negotiable.) Costs increase from there. Natural World Safaris can provide basic, mid-range, and luxury trekking safaris and is eager to work with almost any budget.

Suggested tips range from $10 to $20 per person per day for a private guide and the same amount for your driver if that is a different person than your guide.

If you are on a guided safari or gorilla trek in Uganda, your chances of encountering problems are minimal. However, it is always a good idea to take precautions on your safari, particularly when traveling through urban areas or in regions close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The trek to spot gorillas can be strenuous. It could take anywhere from two to eight hours to find and observe the gorillas, depending on the time of year. Be prepared to hike for multiple hours through uneven terrain at high altitude. It is advisable to train before any gorilla trekking trip by walking uphill, or better yet, by taking day hikes.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. However, our expert guides and gorilla trackers have years of experience taking guests to see these magnificent creatures. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.

Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.

Rwanda Safari & Gorilla Trekking FAQs

The best time to go on a gorilla trek in Rwanda is during the dry season (June - September) when conditions are best for trekking to view the country’s highlight: the fascinating mountain gorillas.

Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Rwanda gorilla trek. Dress in layers and don’t forget a sweater for chilly morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, broken-in hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sun visor and protective gloves – such as gardening gloves - are also useful.

Natural World Kenya Safaris offers Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Rwanda with basic accommodations starting at $720 per person, per day, plus the Rwanda gorilla trekking permit which costs $1,500 per person per day (the permits are required, and those fees are non-negotiable.) Costs increase from there. Natural World Safaris can provide basic, mid-range, and luxury trekking safaris and is eager to work with almost any budget.

Suggested tips for your guide are $25 per person, per day for a private guide and the same amount for your driver if that is a different person than your guide.

Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa, particularly if you are on a guided safari or gorilla trek. Your chances of encountering problems are minimal. However, it is always a good idea to take precautions on your safari, particularly when traveling through urban areas. Cross-border travel into the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Burundi is not safe, however, so steer clear of this.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Rwanda and the gorillas are free to roam. However, our expert guides and gorilla trackers have years of experience taking guests to see these magnificent creatures. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.

Most mountain gorillas in Rwanda live at between 8,000 to 13,000 feet. Volcanoes National Park has a high point of 15,000ft.

Cutting straight to the chase: Finch Hattons Luxury Lodge and Salt Lick Safari Lodge are two of the most luxurious and famous lodges in Kenya.

4. Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge

Kilaguni Serena is one of the oldest and most established safari lodges in East Africa. It’s located in the north of Tsavo West, fairly near to both Finch Hattons and Severin Safari Camp (see above).

From here you can enjoy wonderful views of the lush green Chyulu Hills and even across to Mount Kilimanjaro.

This breathtaking location allows you to observe wildlife from the comfort of the lodge or take a game drive through the nearby savannahs and grasslands.

The lodge has a swimming pool for guests and overlooks its own watering hole, where you can watch elephants, buffaloes, and other wildlife drinking and bathing.

5. Voyager Ziwani Tented Camp

If you’re looking for a mid-priced Tsavo safari lodge, Voyager Ziwani Tented Camp is an excellent choice.

Located on the western edge of Tsavo National Park, on the banks of the Sante River, Voyager Ziwani offers panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding savannah.

Best Lodges in Tsavo East National Park

There aren’t as many hotels and lodges in Tsavo East as in Tsavo West. However, there are a couple of really excellent ones.

6. Ashnil Aruba Lodge

In the heart of Tsavo East National Park, this fantastic lodge is located right next to the Aruba Dam, a man-made reservoir that attracts a huge number of animals.

It’s an amazing spot for wildlife viewing. Large numbers of lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, gazelle, and many other animals flock here to drink and cool off. A group of hippos lives in the dam too.

Ashnil Aruba Lodge enjoys a perfect vantage point overlooking the dam and also has a swimming pool from which you can see animals grazing and playing.

Key features of Ashnil Aruba Lodge

  • Fantastic location overlooking the Aruba Dam – one of the best spots for concentrated wildlife sightings in Tsavo East Park.
  • Elegantly furnished rooms and fixed tents with private balconies and a range of facilities.
  • It’s common to spot large herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and giraffes from the door of your room/tent.
  • The lodge is surrounded by greenery, providing a serene and tranquil atmosphere.
  • You can go on guided nature walks around the dam, as well as game drives to explore other parts of Tsavo East National Park.

7. Man Eaters Lodge

If you’d like to spend time in both Tsavo East and West, Man Eaters Lodge is definitely worth a look.

Conveniently located between the two parks, on the banks of the Tsavo River, this lodge is one of the best budget-friendly options in the area.

The fixed tents are large and comfortable, with balconies overlooking the river where you can watch elephants, hippos, buffalos, and zebras come to drink.

And if you were wondering about the name, this lodge is situated close to the place where the “ Tsavo Man-Eaters ” (a pair of maneless male lions) killed and ate a large number of people constructing the Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1898.

Tsavo East vs. Tsavo West

Kenya’s Tsavo East and West national parks are two of the most popular destinations in Africa for spotting wildlife and enjoying an authentic and immersive safari experience.

Together, the two parks are known as the “ Tsavo National Park ecosystem “, which spans an area of around 22,000 square kilometres (8,500 square miles).

It’s the biggest game park in Kenya and one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa.

As well as offering some of the best game viewing on the continent, the parks have a magnificent range of diverse landscapes, from rugged mountains to vast savannahs and lush forests.

Tsavo West is slightly smaller than Tsavo East and has dramatic volcanic landscapes and red soil (which helps give its elephants their distinctive red colour).

Tsavo East is known for its rolling green hills and acacia woodlands.

Both parks offer spectacular opportunities for game viewing, with large populations of elephants, lions, cheetahs, and giraffes, not to mention a rich variety of birdlife.

While not usually as easy to spot, you also have a pretty decent chance of seeing rhinos and leopards here too.

Regarding accommodation, the lodges in Tsavo West tend to be more expensive and luxurious than those in Tsavo East.

East usually receives fewer visitors than West so can be a great option for peaceful, undisturbed game viewing.

Whichever Tsavo National Park you choose to visit, you’ll find a range of accommodation options, ranging from simple campsites with basic facilities to luxury safari lodges.

How to get to Tsavo National Park

For most visitors, the easiest way to access Tsavo East and West is by flying into either Nairobi or Mombasa and organising a transfer from there.

Most of the above lodges can help you to arrange a transfer to and from their location – check with them if you are unsure.

A few are even able to arrange a transfer in a light aircraft, although this would significantly increase the cost compared with a regular transfer by road.

Mombasa is closer – about 200 kilometres (3-4 hours by road) from the town of Tsavo, near the centre of Tsavo National Park. From Nairobi, it’s about 280 kilometres (4-5 hours).

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could also hire a car and drive yourself. You’ll need a 4WD vehicle to access most of the lodges described in this post – again, check with the lodge directly.

Always use a price comparison site like  rentalcars.com  to find the best deals.

🤩 Check availability and prices!

For those looking for public transport options, there are buses that run from both Mombasa and Nairobi to the town of Voi (Google Maps) , which is a fairly major transport hub for the region.

From Mombasa, it takes about 3 hours. From Nairobi, it’s 6 hours.

Budget travellers: see my guide to backpacking in Kenya .

Also, check out this post on the safest African countries to visit .

How to organise game drives in Tsavo East and West

Most people organise their game drives in Tsavo East and West National Parks through their accommodation.

If you stay at any of the above lodges, the staff there will be able to help you arrange everything.

Typically, you can book either a morning or afternoon game drive which lasts for around 3-4 hours.

A few lodges – such as Sarova Salt Lick and Voyager Ziwani – can even organise night-time game drives for you. I’ve done a couple of these before and they’re incredibly exciting!

You’ll be led by experienced guides who are familiar with the area and knowledgeable about the local wildlife.

It’s a fantastic way to explore the stunning landscapes and animals of both parks, all from the comfort and safety of a safari jeep.

Alternatively, you can organise a 1-day safari as a day trip from either Nairobi or Mombasa. This could be a good option if you don’t have much time but still want to see Tsavo National Park.

However, for the full safari experience, I’d always recommend spending at least one night in the park if you can.

Most nationalities require a visa to visit Kenya, and you’ll need to apply for it in advance.

** I recommend using  iVisa.com . Their online visa processing service is quick, secure, and easy to use. **

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time visitor, these lodges would all make a perfect base from which to explore the breathtaking natural beauty of Tsavo National Park.

I hope this guide to the best safari lodges in Tsavo East and West has helped make your decision a little easier. Whichever lodge you decide to stay at, get ready for an unforgettable experience!

Discover the real Africa

Tsavo East covers an immense 11,750 square kilometres and yet is home to a few tourism properties which ensures a unique and exclusive experience. The Park is one of the world’s most biodiverse regions: bushy grassland and open plains alternate with semi-arid acacia scrub and woodlands and the Galana River gives rise to lush vegetation.

There is an incredible variety of wildlife and birdlife to be seen in the Park: lion, leopard, cheetah, zebras, giraffes, serval cats, genet cats, antelopes, kongoni, lesser kudu, oryx, klipspringer, impala, striped hyena, gazelles, buffalos and elephants. Some 500 bird species have been recorded in the area, including ostrich and migratory kestrels, while buzzards stop by during their long flight South.

Of course, Tsavo is world-famous for its vast herds of elephants, which often glow red after a dust bath, and Satao’s watering hole can attract up to 1,000 elephants a day. Large prides of lion are also sighted regularly. Satao Camp’s contributions to wildlife habitat is to ensure that our waterhole never dries up.

game drives

Satao Camp offers morning and afternoon game drives within the Park. If you’re looking for the legendary Big Five, you won’t be disappointed.

All our safari vehicles are open 4×4s equipped with everything you need for the perfect game drive. We provide binoculars, guide books about African birds and mammals and even a cool box with chilled drinks at the ready.

Our guides are qualified Professional Safari Guides and have worked for many years in Tsavo. Their passion and understanding of the environment and the rich biodiversity of Tsavo are unequalled and they will be delighted to share their knowledge with you.

Sunset over the Tsavo plains is a sight to behold and the ‘sundowner’ experience is a must for all our guests at Satao. At the end of a leisurely late-afternoon game drive, your driver/guide will take you to “our” special sundowner spot. The fire is lit, delicious bitings are served and the chilled sparkling wine or the famous ‘dawa’ cocktails are poured. Sit back and relax, watch the sun slip behind the Sagala Hills and listen to the sounds of the wild. It’s an experience you will treasure forever.

For aspiring photographers, the hour before the sun goes down is blessed with what the professionals call ‘magic light’ – a time of soft golden light that displays the Kenyan wilderness to optimum advantage.

To book your sundowner experience, please ask the camp manager on arrival.

Satao Camp’s oasis is a favourite habitat for a great variety of birds: over 300 different species have been identified. Birders can safely walk around the Camp’s grounds and watch the many beautiful birds coming to nest or take a bath in the waterhole. Hornbills, barbits, starlings, guinea fowls and pearl spotted owls are very common to see. Our resident flock of colorful guinea fowl are a pleasure to watch.

Nearby attractions

As well as teeming with wildlife, Tsavo East offers visitors some spectacular scenery. Some notable sights include:

The Mudanda Rock is a 1.6 km inselberg of stratified rock that acts as a water catchment that supplies a natural dam below. It offers an excellent vantage point for the hundreds of elephants and other wildlife that come to drink during the dry season.

On the Galana River, Lugard Falls is a series of white water rapids running between some remarkable rock formations. On request, clients can book a full day game drive with a picnic lunch to see both the falls and also Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow. Its incredible 290 km length was formed by lava from Ol Doinyo Sabuk Mountain.

Boma Simba Safari Lodge is the place to visit. They have good affordable rooms, a good view facing the national park. Their is a campsite with ample parking area, clean washrooms and wi-fi accessibility. Overlanders can also camp at this place.

Great place! Definitely already worth it! Stay in one of the little houses, inside your overlander or just how I did it, in your own tent, a few meters away (behind the fence!) from a water spot with a chance of animals coming by! 🙂

Super Location. Great staff! We were two vegetarians, and they made the best food just for us. Would go there again. And I can highly recommend it to everyone.

The Boma Simba Safari Lodge is an exceptional choice for a safari adventure. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay, from chic A-frame cottages to a camping area for those who prefer a more rustic experience. Renowned for the Great Migration that sees millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other animals migrate here from the Serengeti in  Tanzania , the  Maasai Mara National Reserve also offers opportunities to see the Big Five. Namely, lion, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and rhinos.

And all this against an iconic East African safari backdrop of rolling grasslands and riverine forests.

Exclusive lodges and tented camps

  • Angama Mara lodge: perched on a rift valley ridge, this delivers breath-taking views and luxurious tented suites.
  • Mara Plains Camp: this small, high-end camp on a private conservancy offers excellent game viewing, and very few other tourists. How's that for an exclusive experience?

Exclusive activities in Maasai Mara National Reserve

Alongside enjoying a few private games drives at different times of the day, make your Maasai Mara experience all the more special — and memorable — through taking advantage of some rather unique excursions.

One of Africa’s most renowned safari destinations, Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve offering a variety of exclusive activities that provide unique and unforgettable experiences. Here are some of the best.

  • Go on private personalised game drives:  enjoy the flexibility of customized game drives tailored to your interests, whether that’s photographing the Big Five, tracking a specific animal, or learning about the ecosystem.
  • Walking safaris : explore the Mara on foot with an experienced guide. Walking safaris offer more intimate encounters with nature, and a chance to learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem.
  • Hop on scenic helicopter flights : take a helicopter or small plane flight over the Maasai Mara to get a bird’s-eye view of the landscape. Such flights can access more remote and less-visited areas, making for a unique perspective and more exclusive experience.
  • Sunrise hot air balloon safaris :  experience the Maasai Mara on a sunrise hot air balloon ride. After enjoying panoramic views of the vast plains, rivers and wildlife, round-off the experience with a champagne breakfast in the bush.
  • Exclusive bush meals and sundowners: at the other end of the day, enjoy private gourmet meals in a secluded spot in the bush while watching the sunset over the savannah.
  • Be inspired by conservation activities: participate in behind-the-scenes conservation activities, such as tracking collared animals, learning about anti-poaching efforts, or visiting research projects. There’s no better way to gain exclusive insights into the challenges and successes of wildlife conservation in the Maasai Mara.
  • Cultural visits:  visit a traditional Maasai village to learn about the customs, traditions, and daily life of the Maasai people. Such experiences typically include traditional dance, craft making, and insights into community projects

Editor’s tip: in order to maximise your experience, you’ll want to wise up on the best time to go on a Kenya safari so you don’t miss what’s top of your wildlife list. For example, the Great Migration happens during the June-October dry season.

Oh, and if the Great Migration is on your mind, consider taking a  trip that covers Tanzania and Kenya .

In addition, many lodges in and around Amboseli offer talks and demonstrations by local Maasai people, and opportunities to buy traditional crafts directly from the artisans.

Located in northern Kenya , the Laikipia Plateau is a series of private conservancies that roughly total the size of Wales.

Sitting in the shadows of Mount Kenya, the landscape serves a stunning mosaic of rolling hills, grasslands, and wooded river banks.

Home to the Big Five, wildlife thrives here. It's also a place that sees conservation and community development work hand in hand, especially when it comes to protecting endangered species like black rhinos, wild dogs and Grevy's zebras.

In fact, it’s home to the biggest rhino sanctuary in East Africa — Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

  • Arijiju: this gem offers wellness facilities, conservation, and adventure activities from a peaceful retreat that blends into the landscape.
  • Kicheche Laikipia Camp:  located in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, this intimate, eco-friendly camp is known for its abundant wildlife, conservation efforts and fine dining .

  • Private mountain biking trips:  explore Laikipia’s rugged terrain on a mountain bike, with trails offering varying levels of difficulty, and beautiful landscapes.

  • Conservation activities:  gain insights into the challenges and successes of wildlife conservation in Laikipia on excursions that include the likes of tracking collared animals, and learning about anti-poaching efforts. We especially recommend booking a rhino-tracking experience in Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Covering 20,812 square kilometres of dry bush country, the combined area of Tsavo West and Tsavo East national parks makes it by far the biggest wildlife reserve in Kenya.

For context, it’s two-and-a-half times bigger than Yellowstone National Park.

With the Galana River cutting through Tsavo East and the Mzima Springs in Tsavo West, the semi-arid bushland landscapes are home to huge herds of elephants, lions, and Tsavo lions, which are famous for their lack of manes.

Both parks offer opportunities to enjoy private game drives, spa services from the comfort of your wilderness lodge, and fine dining under the clear, star-lit sky.

  • Finch Hattons Luxury Camp, Tsavo West: this award-winning luxury camp offers a blend of elegance and wilderness adventure, with opulent tents, private decks. a wellness center and stacks of expert-led activities, including guided bush walks, visits to Mzima Springs, and bird watching.
  • Voyager Ziwani Safari Camp: located on a private sanctuary on the western edge of Tsavo West, near the Tanzanian border, this features comfortable tents with en-suite bathrooms and private verandas facing the Sante River.
  • Kipalo Hills: located on a private conservancy bordering Tsavo East and West, this is great if you want to mix luxury and adventure. With a focus on sustainable tourism, the tents are spacious, and the activities exhilarating, from game drives and guided walks, to cultural visits and bush breakfasts.

Exclusive activities in Tsavo National Parks

  • Private game drives:  enjoy the flexibility of customized game drives tailored to your interests such as photography, bird watching, or tracking specific animals.
  • Dusk and night-time game drives:  discover lesser-seen sides to Tsavo through night game drives, where you can spot creatures that are more active after dark, among them leopards, hyenas, aardvarks, and nocturnal birds.
  • Bespoke bird-watching tours: given that  Tsavo is home to 500+ bird species, specialisedbird watching tours will satisfy and delight experience bird-watchers and newbies alike.
  • Visit Mzima Springs:  known for its crystal-clear waters and underwater viewing chamber where you can see hippos and crocodiles, we can’t recommend booking a private excursion to Tsavo West’s Mzima Springs more highly.
  • Helicopter rides and scenic flights: for a fabulous bird’s-eye view of Tsavo’s dramatic landscapes — we’re talking vast plains, rivers and mountains — take a helicopter or small plane flight over the parks.
  • Visit Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary:  located in Tsavo West, visiting this protected area offers immersive opportunities to learn about efforts to protect and conserve these majestic animals, and possibly spot rhinos in their natural habitat.

Located in the coastal region of Kenya, Shimba Hills National Reserve offers a serene and somewhat off-the-beaten-path safari experience.

Known for its rolling hills, rich biodiversity, and stunning views, we can personally vouch for the fact that it’s a fantastic destination for those looking to enjoy luxury in nature.

While in the reserve, you might get to see the rare sable antelope, elephants, giraffes, and numerous bird species.

If that wasn't enuogh, Shimba Hills’ proximity to the coast also makes it easy to combine your visit with a beach break.

For example, you could spend time around the Diani Beach on the south coast  — think white-sand beaches backed by palm trees and fronted by clear-blue Indian Ocean.

  • Shimba Hills Lodge: we personally recommend staying in Shimba Hills Lodge. Nestled in the heart of the reserve, it’s the perfect a treehouse lodge, constructed from wood and overlooking a waterhole. The food and service here is truly outstanding, as are the private bush walks and game drives.
  • Kutazama Lodge: located on the edge of Shimba Hills, this luxury boutique lodge offers breathtaking views of the hills and forest, and an exclusive, personalized experience. By which we mean individually designed villas with private terraces and infinity pools, private dining, tailored excursions, and an on-site spa.
  • Kutazama Camp: offering spacious tents with comfortable furnishings and private verandas, gourmet meals are served in a central dining area or private settings.

Exclusive activities in Shimba Hills National Reserve

  • Go on guided nature walks:  in addition to booking private game drives in a vehicle, Shimba Hills is an especially rewarding place to enjoy immersive nature walks that allow you to explore the forested areas, grasslands, and waterfalls with an experienced guide.
  • Visit Sheldrick Falls: take  a guided hike to the beautiful Sheldrick Falls, a stunning 25-meter waterfall within the reserve. The hike offers a chance to enjoy the lush landscape and spot wildlife along the way. At the end of your hike, you can cool off in natural pool at the base of the falls.
  • Cultural immersion:  visit nearby Mijikenda villages to learn about the culture, traditions, and daily life of the local communities. You’ll get to learn about traditional dances and craft, and listen to local storytellers.
  • Go on private night game drives:  discover the nocturnal side of Shimba Hills on a night game drive, during which you can spot the likes of animals bush babies, genets, and nocturnal birds.
  • Spa and wellness retreats:  many lodges and camps in the Shimba Hills offer spa and wellness facilities where you can enjoy massages, yoga, and other wellness treatments amidst tranquil natural settings.

How A Kenya Safari Freed Me From Diet Culture

How A Kenya Safari Freed Me From Diet Culture

“The fish can’t see the water it’s in unless it jumps outside its fish bowl.” Ever since returning home from a safari in Kenya, I’ve been thinking about this old Chinese proverb. I’ve spent the past four years healing my relationship to my body after nearly a decade of obsessive self-control, and yet it took jumping far outside my fish bowl—embarking on a safari in Kenya—to realize the water I’ve been swimming in is diet culture. For 10 days on safari, I observed animals whose entire lives revolved around listening to their bodies. At home in Toronto, it’s normal, even lauded, to treat your body like a machine; here, animals who successfully honor their hunger reign supreme. Immersed in this new environment I unexpectedly found myself unlearning diet culture and relearning my own animal instincts.

For most of my adult life, my ruling impulse has been the need to control. Unlike a wild animal who, when facing scarce resources, responds to that uncertainty by letting their hunger fuel the search for food, my automatic response is to ignore or deny my body’s signals. Anytime my life took an unexpected turn—the sudden death of a parent or a break-up, for example—the only way I could taper the feelings that felt too big for my body was to move. I became addicted to exercise, and over time, my appetite reduced. I was ruled by the clock, pushing my hunger aside an extra hour if it meant getting more work done or another set of reps in. Eventually, I lost too much weight and my body demanded my attention. I’ve spent the last four years trying to re-awaken all the natural cues I silenced.

Hippos upon arrival at Finch Hattons

Anna Haines

As a travel writer who often writes about wellness, I’ve been on many trips where food, and my relationship to it, are the focus. But this trip was not supposed to be that. With five-star safari outfitter Micato , the focus would be seeing the wildlife and diverse environments of Kenya, all while enjoying luxury accommodations. First, I landed in the country’s capital, Nairobi, where five million of the country’s 54 million people live. Despite the dense urban environment, I didn’t see any billboards featuring diet culture-coded food ads speckling the side of the highway; instead, there were zebras. I asked my driver what the wild animals were doing in the city, and he told me we were passing Nairobi National Park, a protected area within the capital.

My next surprise came the following day at our first camp— Finch Hattons in Tsavo National Park, a one-hour flight from Nairobi. As we walked into the open-air lobby, my eyes were immediately drawn to three hippos grazing by a pond just a few steps away. Recalling that hippos are the deadliest large land mammal on the planet, I asked why they were so close to us—and, more importantly, if we were safe. The camp director explained that the hippos had increasingly been roaming on the property because they were attracted to the watering hole amid the ongoing drought. He assured us we were safe—despite their hefty appearance, these hippos were underweight and, thus, weak. The language was strikingly similar to the definition of atypical anorexia , a condition where the person may appear to be a “normal” weight or even on the heavier side but in reality, they’re starving. Like the hungry hippos, just because someone isn’t emaciated doesn’t mean they’re healthy or at their optimal weight.

Giraffe on Game Drive in Tsavo National Park

The drought was afflicting other animals in Tsavo, too: on our game drives, the dry conditions meant we could easily see giraffes who would usually be camouflaged by the trees. Already naturally on the thin side, the malnourished giraffes appeared particularly frail. Our safari guide pointed out that an underweight giraffe is easy prey and not likely to survive. As I observed the lethargic creature with its elegant neck and long stick legs—clearly vulnerable in the barren landscape—I thought of how backward it is that we idolize this kind of body back home. We praise thinness, and yet I know from experience that a human who is underweight is not functioning at their best.

Seeing hungry animals in the wild made me hungry for the first time in a long time. In between game drives and floating in the pool, I relished the joy of eating. I appreciated the abundance of food served in our lavish multi-course meals with a newfound awareness of the privilege of not having to catch it in the wild. One hot afternoon, a chilled cucumber soup we ate as an appetizer at lunch unlocked a childhood memory I’d forgotten. In a bite, I was transported to my Ecuadorian babysitter Millie’s kitchen eating her broccoli soup, which tasted remarkably similar to the dish in front of me. As I slurped each refreshing spoonful, I thought back to a time in my childhood before food carried so much baggage—when it had two simple purposes: fuel and enjoyment. “Could I get back to this place?” I wondered as I scraped the bowl dry.

The next day, we took a short flight to Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp in the Maasai Mara. Unlike the desolate, dry landscape of Tsavo, the Maasai Mara National Reserve was filled with forested rolling hills and open savannah sprinkled with Acacia trees. On our first game drive, I noticed how much healthier the animals, particularly the giraffes, looked here. But even when we weren’t observing the wildlife, it was apparent that we were in an environment that was well-fed; I could feel the difference. Whether I was soaking in a bathtub made out of canvas in one of the plush tents, eating the colorful bounty of the land in Cottar’s main lodge, or resting in my room where the vaulted roof gave way to floor-to-ceiling windows, I felt immersed in an ecosystem that was very much alive. The lush forest teemed with energy—from the verdant green trees to the buzzing insects—reminding me that anything that is well-nourished thrives.

Herd of elephants in the Maasai Mara

At 3 a.m., the wake-up call came for a sunrise hot air balloon ride. While the sweeping Maasai Mara views were worth forgoing some sleep, I was admittedly preoccupied with an unfamiliar sensation in my stomach. I hadn’t eaten much more than a stick of jerky, and I was pleasantly surprised to feel my tummy grumble as we descended back down to earth—an encouraging sign my appetite was finally returning after so many years away. Before I could satisfy my hunger at our buffet bush breakfast, we first stopped to watch another hungry animal—a leopard with a fresh kill—satisfy theirs. While others were off-put by the sight of the feline’s bloody fangs gnawing on a string of intestines, I was inspired. Here was an animal who saw her kill as nothing more than fuel, a much-needed reminder that food is just food; it doesn’t matter what it looks like.

After I devoured some unphotogenic scrambled eggs and sausages, we broke up the long drive back to camp with more up-close wildlife encounters. First, we lucked out with three big cat spottings in a row: a cheetah rolling in the tall grass, followed by two lions napping in the shade of a bush. As we sat in our safari vehicle just 10 feet away from the larger of the two slumbering lions, our guide whispered that lions can sleep up to 20 hours a day—they need to preserve their energy for hunting at night. How ironic, I thought. Back home, many of the people considered the most high-functioning—from biohacking tech billionaires to entrepreneurial celebrities—are those who boast about denying their body rest when it needs it. Yet here was this apex predator, an animal at the top of the food chain, unapologetically napping in the sun. After so many years of pushing through my tiredness, I suddenly felt motivated to start honoring my body when it calls for rest.

Later, we saw a herd of elephants grazing in an open field. As we sat for 30 minutes in awe of the gentle giants—delighting at the sight of the playful babies enthusiastically trailing behind their mom, occasionally tripping over their own feet—our guide told us elephants eat upwards of 550 pounds of vegetation a day. The sheer magnitude of food these animals have to consume to fuel their bodies reminded me of the seemingly obvious truth I had so easily ignored back home: eating is one of our most important basic survival functions.

Sundowner in Ol Jogi Conservancy

This idea was cemented in stone for me a couple of days later when we spotted a fresh kill on the way to our last bush dinner in the Ol Jogi Conservancy . Compared to the Maasai Mara, this 58,000-acre protected area in the Laikipia District was distinctly barren, meaning we easily spotted 11 lions feasting on a buffalo from many miles away. Once we got close, our guide explained the lions would take turns eating and sleeping over the course of 12 hours until nothing but the carcass remained. After more than a week of wildlife-watching, you would think the sight of animals simply eating and sleeping wouldn’t excite us, and yet here we were, sitting in our safari vehicle in dumbfounded silence. Treating the innate acts of eating and sleeping like a spectacle—with our glowing screens separating our faces from the natural scene before us—illuminated to me just how detached from these two basic needs I’d become. Eat, sleep, poop, repeat—this is essentially the daily life of a lion, yet we find this animal incredibly impressive. Why, then, do we treat these essential functions like optional chores back home?

That night, after yet another opulent buffet feast, we were surprised with a performance by a Maasai tribe. When one of the dancers ushered me to join them, I didn’t resist as I would back home. In recent years, I’ve become overly cautious about movement out of fear I’ll fall back into my exercise addiction. But after more than a week away from my step-count reminders, I felt free to move intuitively. As I awkwardly mirrored the motions of the sweaty bodies around me, I was reminded of something I was told a few days prior—that freely dancing and singing in groups is a practice the Maasai people have maintained since childhood. Whenever I see children running around back home, I envy their freedom—they move not to “exercise” but because they feel like it. As I stomped my feet to the syncopated beat, for the first time in as long as I can remember, I didn’t worry about conserving energy or burning too many calories. I just moved.

I returned home to reverse culture shock. After 10 days of watching animals eat when they were hungry and sleep when they were tired, suddenly living by the clock felt absurd. I found myself prioritizing my body over my mind more often—honoring my needs for food and rest. Diet culture was obvious to me before the safari but now it felt completely ludicrous: every time I heard someone proudly say they skipped a meal or they were being “good” by ordering something “healthy” at a restaurant, I thought of the animals in the wild who ate without hesitation or thought.

The benefits of the safari diminished over time, but the lessons stuck with me. Whenever I witness intuitive eating and rest—whether it be the way my cat ravenously eats her food and sleeps all day or the way a toddler cries when hungry and stops eating when they’re full—I’m reminded that I’m a human who needs nourishment and downtime to survive. I no longer see those who treat their bodies like machines as our society’s most productive and venerable. The ideal, to me, is the body that, like a lion, honors its animal instincts.
