The place looks like a dump. Exposed wires hanging from everywhere. The bathroom is so nasty that you need to disinfect yourself after using it. The space is very big with a very long bar. They have a dance floor and a stage. High top tables. Very dark in here. Not much money was put into fixing up the place. The name Safari Beach Club is inviting but it does not look/feel like a safari not a beach.

They have a lot of TV's so it is good to watch sports. I have eaten here before but the food is nothing to brag about. Besides considering how the place looks I can only imagine how nasty the kitchen must be. Ugh gives me the heebee geebies!

The music they play is good. SBC attracts a very young mixed crowd. They were playing beer pong and Jenga in a room that is off the the side.

Come here if you want cheap drinks but ONLY for that reason.

I came here on a friday night after hearing recommendations about this place from my boss and my boyfriends friends who were all locals in the area. We arrived around 11:00 after we found a parking lot a block away with plenty of spots. When I arrived with my boyfriend and his group we were immediately checked for ID and there was  no entrance fee, they didn't even check our bags or pockets so I question their security measures here.As I came in, I took a look around the whole place and I was not thrilled with the layout. There are basically 3 bars, like two on your left and one on your right, then towards the bathroom you have a crappy wooden dance floor with corny lights by the DJ and tables in between the bar on each side. Its like okay which bar do I sit in? Is one bartender at one section better than another, why isn't there just one large L shaped main bar? I was happy with how large the space was and how there was a fancier private room in the back, but seriously this place is outdated! The theme is supposed to be like your at a beach , but I never got that vibe. I just saw a bunch of old local creeps watching sport games, getting piss drunk, acting dumb on the dance floor that was empty. The music was all over the place, they went from playing taylor swift to edm mixes of Britney spears and then old songs by mariah carey, like you can't even dance to half those songs. I see that they want to attract classier clientele when they consider this bar to be more like a "beach club", but it comes off as a tacky and confusing old sports bar.  There is no dress code here, so you can come in with sweatpants or dress to impress.   i have to say the bartenders were friendly, they worked fast and they are generous on alcohol. My jack and coke was 10 bucks and it was strong, a few of those can definitely get you buzzed. I can picture this bar being successful and classier if they did renovations and changed the theme to sports only. I have heard good things about how lively and rowdy the sports games are when they use a large projector, it brings all the locals together . Also the bathrooms here are just gross trying to look like it is in a pool house or cabana, honestly I did not even want to touch the doorknobs there. With that being said I would not even want to try the food there, the place looked dirty. I would like to come back in the summer when its nice and sunny to see how the bar runs when they leave the doors open along the boulevard, like for boozy brunch or happy hour. The nightlife here on the other hand needs improvement, end of discussion.

I'm really curious about the negative reviews; either things have changed for SBC, or I've been lucky every time.

First off, the place is HUGE. There are 3.5 bars (one when you walk in, one in the back right and two smaller ones, which is why I say 3.5) and an absurd number of televisions, which means football Sunday = a great day here.

For those complaining about the wings.. I don't get it. The wings were always pretty healthy in size and the sauces were on point. Word of advice though: stay away from the teriyaki. Whatever you do, don't order the teriyaki. Unless your passion is having wings drenched in what I can only describe as sauce that comes from a bottle labeled "SALTY AS F—," I would not order it. Instead, go with the honey BBQ, the hot, the mild (if you're a baby) and the Parmesan garlic (you won't be making out with anyone though). You won't find any real specials on Sunday, which is a shame since several of the neighboring spots have quarter wings and beer specials, but the quality and level of service make up for that in spades. But that's why I only gave 4 stars.

They do a three wing sampler, which is 10×3 wings in your choice of sauces, and it's a great money saver if you and your friend(s) are starving.

The beer selection, while not massive, is definitely respectable and the bartenders are all pretty awesome people and/or easy on the eyes so….that's always a plus.

The SBC fries are killer if you don't care about your life as you get a huge plate of fries covered in cheese in bacon (guys, the cheese needs to actually be melted!)

After Conga's next door closed down (always pay your taxes, people!), my friends and I were desperate for a new sports bar, and SBC won us over. It's not the cheapest, but it's pretty great.

This place is a LOT larger on the inside than it looks from the outside! On a regular night, it's a casual place to grab some food and drinks with a friend. Ladies Night on Wednesdays are a completely different story, though. This is where people come to get ratchet. Buying a $5 wristband will get women free drinks from 8pm until 1am. If you see two small Asian girls going all-out on the dance floor, that's probably me and my friend. DJ Ricketz (who spins hard EDM) is overqualified to play at Safari Beach Club, and he's the only reason I'll keep coming back. Otherwise, the crowd gets pretty trashy and that really turns me off.

Wow, was totally surprised by how big this place is.  Great place to come catch a sports game with their 30+ TVs and a crazy long bar.  Staff is extremely friendly and drinks and really well priced.  Food is typical bar food but does the job.  There really isn't a Safari theme, and it's kind of divey, but it's okay, it's a cool place to grab a drink and watch some games.

I will be back.  Look for Mack, awesome bartender.

Came here last night to catch game 1 of the Mets and Royals World Series, I'm a sucker for wings where the meat falls off the bone and SBC is not the place to get them.  We got the wings platter which comes with options of 45 wings and 3 sauces, we got hot, bbq and Jack Daniels sauces, the best of the three was the JD sauce but even though the sauces were a hit the wings were hard to bite into, perfect size not too big and not too small.  The hit of the night was the SBC fries, loaded fries with bacon and cheese with creamy ranch dip sauce.

We arrived just in time for the game and SBC was not full, service was great until it got packed, it will take forever for us to get a refill of our drinks. Our server noticed that she hasn't been to our table and after that she was on top of refilling our drinks.

I believe this was Johnny Famous back in the day.

Fourth of July 2015 this sports bar was dead but the staff are very accommodating and welcoming to my party of two. A combined sports bar and live entertainment with the elements of TVs, pool tables, bowling alley game. Space is available for dancing to geriatric rock n roll cover bands.  Safari Beach's website has a calendar that lists all cover bands playing as well as their time slot. Select nights there is a DJ pivoting the music.  Safari Beach has Happy Hour on select nights with "Ladies Night" themes or other activities. Theme to a beach setting with beach-like names for drinks and food menu.  This business is actually dead as patrons go to a real beach. They have a blender to accommodate a non-alcoholic drink, Virgin Piña Colada without alcohol due to my recent MAJOR surgery I am still on medication.

Our party of two ordered: BBQ Beach Wrap with French Fries $6.95 Macho Nachos $12.00 (vegetable chips by Terra Chips) served on a triangle plate

Food is average and nothing that sparks my interest- 2 stars, but the drinks and entertainment are worth a visit- 4 stars. Customer service is attentive- 4 stars.  The bar tender was nice who enable me to gain power for my cell phone from all the picture taking.

Love the atmosphere here. It feels like it's a bar located on a beach. Which is perfect given its name. There was a band playing when my friend and I went on a Saturday afternoon so we sat at a table near the door so we could hear each other.

We ordered the fish tacos and the Safari Seafood Sampler – 12 clams, 12 oysters, 12 shrimp. I loved the tacos and the oysters (which were huge, and the bigger the oyster, the better, according to me). However, the shrimp wasn't fresh, and for that, I've got to dock the stars.

Bayside restaurant changes its look while starting a new chapter

' src=

Bayside’s Safari Beach Club has been replaced by Hatfields, a new restaurant that’s on a mission to create its own identity as the neighborhood’s newest watering hole.

For the last few months, the Safari Beach Club, a well-known restaurant on Bell Boulevard, underwent a renovation and relaunched as Hatfields. The eatery’s manager, Mike Atthegreen, said it’s a “fresh, clean slate” for the eatery.

Having lived on Bell Boulevard for 30 years, Atthegreen was also involved with Safari Beach Club since its early days. Over the past few years, however, the restaurant gained a bad reputation due to a series of incidents that occurred.

In 2014, a man from Whitestone was charged with attempted murder after stabbing a man multiple times during a bar fight. That was followed by an incident that occurred last November, where a man assaulted a patron.

The incidents gained much attention on social media, and the rumor mill churned. Atthegreen said that many of the accusations made on social media were false, and since Hatfields opened last month, there have been no incidents thanks, in part, to the change of the security staff.

While the full menu will not be available until next week, Atthegreen hopes that people will stop by and enjoy themselves in this new environment. Hatfields will be serving traditional pub fare, including hot wings, burgers and macaroni and cheese.

The Russian Amur bear in Siberia

safari beach club bayside

It seemed like traveling to the end of the world for this rare subspecies of brown bear. I went to the majestic Land of the Siberian Tiger and the world’s largest forest. To get there, I flew over halfway around the world and back for incredible trophy. It would have been slightly shorter to have flown to Anchorage, Alaska then to Russia, but I chose instead to fly 12 hours from upstate New York where I live to Moscow. I wanted to stand in the middle of Red Square, see the Kremlin, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and drink-in the rich culture that is Moscow. I thoroughly enjoyed my day-and-a-half romp through this historic city.

My journey continued as a flew another eight hours from one side of this giant nation to the other. I landed in Khabavsko where I was met and drove five hours into a completely isolated wilderness deep in the Siberian forest. I arrived at camp to learn that I would be in bear camp with Weatherby Award winner Alan Saekman. Alan had already been in bear camp nine days, logging in more than 100 hours in various bear stands. He had only seen a couple of cubs in all that time.

After arriving in camp, I shot my gun to make sure it was on and was pronounced ready to hunt. I quickly changed and was whisked away on a four-wheeler for an extremely bumpy one-hour rough ride. We approached the tree stand with caution as only a few days prior a large tiger was caught by the trail camera in the middle of the day. I also learned that Alan had hunted out of the same stand but had no luck. I was bone weary from my eight-hour flight, five-hour drive to camp, followed by my one-hour hour four-wheel adventure.

I had to fight to stay awake in the stand. My adrenalin finally subsided as the hours rolled by and jet lag and exhaustion hit me in various waves. I was fighting sleep until I heard a twig snap and came to full alert. I glanced over at my Russian guide whose stoic face had not changed expressions since we climbed into the stand. It was dark but judging from the noise I assumed the bear had circled around.

I picked up my gun, preparing for a shot, when my guide finally leaned over and touched my arm. The bear’s vitals were blocked, so I was unable to take the shot. My guide wanted me to shoot, but through my scope no shot had presented itself.

My frustrated guide gave me a mean look. The bear had turned and was now looking at us. I squeezed of a shoot that hit the bear perfectly. The large boar jumped and spun around. My guide fired two follow-up shots with his semi-automatic Russian rifle. I worked my bolt quickly and fired my second round that hit the bear’s ribs, dropping the bear only a few feet from where he had been standing. I decided to put a final round into the bear, just to be safe, as trailing a 900-pound wounded bear through the rain forest was not high on my “to do” list.

author and guide

My Russian guide actually smiled at me after I pulled the trigger for the final shot on the downed bear. I was totally overjoyed and completely exhausted. My bear was a really good one. We guessed the bear to be around nine feet tall, over 850 pounds with at least a 24 to 25-inch skull.

I felt bad for Alan who had put in so much time and yet I flew straight into camp and three hours later I had a big bear down out of the same stand he had been hunting. Alan told me that three other hunters also came into camp, harvested nice bears and left since he had been in camp. He was not having much bear luck.

Alan, being a wise man, brought along Hannes Pianner, a professional cameraman who was there to document the adventure. The problem was Hannes had only filmed raccoon dogs running around and two cubs in nine days. The next night Alan, Hannes and their guide went out to hunt but never came back. We were concerned but assumed they had vehicle troubles and were stranded.

The next morning the guides headed out to look for them, but as it turned out, Alan had decided to spend the night in the blind, hoping the bear might come in. It is no wonder Alan has won so many hunting awards. The darn thing of it was that nothing showed up.

We were all playing cards the next day, chatting about what a rough night it had to have been. I honestly don’t think I would have been able stay that long on stand. It was during our talk that I learned that Alan is 80 years old! The man is truly a machine. To hunt that hard at any age is tough enough, but to do it at 80 years young — holy cow!

The next night Alan finally scored, harvesting a nice Asian white lipped bear that is known for the distinctive white V it has on its chest. Hannes captured it on film with some excellent footage.

The hunt continued. I wanted to collect the rare raccoon dog that only exist in a few areas of the world. Alan was still looking for his Amur bear.

The hunting got even rougher as a steady rain began that did not quit or waver, turning everything into streams and ponds. The temperature plummeted, as well, making the hunting wet and cold.

Alan stayed out later and hunted harder than I did in these conditions. I have been a successful athlete my entire life and consider myself to be a driven person, but I was given a lesson in determination and perseverance from a man who was not only 80 years old, but by a person who has proven himself over and over, winning many prestigious hunting awards. You would think the man would let up, but obviously that doesn’t exist in his DNA.

massive claws

The hunt wore on, but the weather didn’t cooperate. After 14 long days of hunting, Alan’s trip was over. On his last day, Jay Link and two of his hunting buddies arrived at camp. I was shocked to learn that the two men were competing for the world’s highest hunting award: SCI’s International Hunter of the Year.

Alan has taken second place in this award an amazing four times, once to his wife Barbara! It was a thrill to be sharing bear camp with two of the best hunters on the planet. I enjoyed listening to the two men talk about their quest for various species. I was getting hunting lessons from these two extremely elite hunters. It was an amazing experience.

Alan left, and I hated to see him go. It was a true pleasure to share bear camp with such an outstanding person.

Jay Link has won SCI’s Pantheon Award, the World Hunting Ring back in 2011, and was the front runner for the International Hunter of the Year, so talking and sharing a small cabin with him for a couple of days was indeed educational. I just wish I had brought ear plugs. The man is also a world class snorer.

Jay and his two buddies hunted extremely hard for four days, but not a shot was fired. The largest typhon to hit Japan in the last 30 years struck, sending waves of rain and wind all the way to our bear camp. The animals were just not moving in this severe weather.

Jay is an official SCI scorer who was kind enough to measure my bear skull and if the score holds up after the 60-day drying period, I will have taken the fourth largest Amur bear ever!

I was in camp with the best of the best, but I am the one bringing home a world class trophy, proving once again that sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

We all thank our good friend Anton Tonchev of Hunt Europe and Links Safari for providing this memorable trip to the far eastern part of Russia.–Darrell Sterling
