Train on the Namibia Safari by Luxury Train aboard Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa journey

Namibia Safari aboard Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa

The highlights.

NEW for 2024: Itinerary is now 12 days. Running times have been tweaked, and visits to Kolmanskop and Lüdertiz, known for its museum, architecture and coastal wildlife, have been added.

Other key highlights include:

  • Nine nights aboard the Pride of Africa, one of the world’s finest luxury trains;
  • The Big Hole in Kimberley, site of one of the world’s most famous diamond rushes;
  • Visit the Fish River Canyon, second largest canyon in the world;
  • Tour of Windhoek, a cosmopolitan city with a strong German influence;
  • Game drives and overnight at Mokuti Lodge , located in the game-rich Etosha National Park;
  • Overnight stay at the world-famous Sossusvlei, a stunning pan in the Namib Desert surrounded by massive red sand dunes;
  • Visit to a cheetah conservation center;
  • All accommodations, meals, alcohol (on board) and off-train excursions included.

The 12-day Namibia Safari is an unforgettable 1,500 mile (3,400 km) trek through one of the earth’s most interesting and alien landscapes, all aboard Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa luxury train.

Departing from Pretoria, the first stop is Kimberley, center of one of the world’s famous diamond rushes, where there is an opportunity to savor the 1870s atmosphere of the mine village. The train traverses the stark vistas of the Northern Cape to the Fish River Canyon – second in size to the Grand Canyon – and Garas Park with its Quiver Tree Forest.

Continue across the untamed beauty of the Kalahari Desert to Namibia’s capital for a tour; Windhoek is a lively, cosmopolitan city with a strong German flavor. Next, take a short flight to Sossusvlei, a stunning pan in the Namib Desert, for an overnight stay, followed by a night in the game-rich Etosha National Park .

On the last morning, the train travels the Namib to the perfectly preserved 19th-century German Hansa town of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay – an unforgettable end to a remarkable journey.

Imagine a country so vast and sparsely populated that it’s possible to find places devoid of everything: plants, animals, people, rocks: just endless miles of wind-swept sand.

Namibia is much more. Namib-Naukluft, Africa’s largest game park, is home to Sossusvlei’s brilliant red dunes. Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s largest, both in terms of its size and in its plethora of different kinds of animals.

And there’s no finer way to explore this desert land then by luxury train.

As the former German Southwest Africa, Namibia retains much of its colonial heritage—it’s also well-known for its great lager beers.

Countries Visited

  • South Africa

Day 1: Depart Pretoria

Gather at Rovos Rail’s private Capital Park station in Pretoria. Board the Pride of Africa for a late morning departure. Settle into your private cabin, and enjoy lunch and dinner on board as the train travels south toward the goldfields of the Witwatersrand.

Day 2: Kimberley

Arrive in Kimberley this morning. Capital of the Northern Cape, Kimberley is well known for the discovery of diamonds that led to its establishment in 1871. Enjoy a tour of the Big Hole and Diamond Mine Museum.

Back on the train, lunch is served as you travel through the Karoo, a vast semi-desert region that was once an enormous inland sea. Over millions of years, volcanic matter was ground down and deposited as silt upon the seabed to form what geologists call the Karoo system. Afternoon tea and dinner are served on board.

Day 3: Upington & the Orange River

After breakfast, disembark for a walking tour of Upington, oasis town on the Orange River, surrounded by the Kalahari Desert and famous for its wine. Next, enjoy a sunset cruise on the Orange River.

Back on board, lunch is served and Namibian border formalities will take place. Dinner is served en route to Holoog.

Day 4: Fish River Canyon

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and lunch on the train this morning. This afternoon, explore the gigantic Fish River Canyon, largest canyon in Africa. The vast rocky landscape breaks up into a series of spectacular cliffs. Its size is impressive: 100 miles (161 km) long, up to 17 miles (27 km) wide and 1,800 feet (550 m) at its deepest.

Return to the train for dinner on board.

Day 5: Kolmanskop & Luderitz

Return to the train for dinner.

Day 6: Keetmanshoop & Garas Park

After breakfast, visit Keetmanshoop and Garas Park, home to the famous Quiver Trees, and roughly 300 specimens of the Aloe dichotomy. The prehistoric trees have forked branches that reach up to 16 feet (5 meters) making for great photographic opportunities.

After check-in and lunch at the lodge, embark on an afternoon desert drive followed by a bush dinner after sunset.

Day 8: Sossusvlei & Windhoek

Enjoy an early morning desert drive with breakfast in the vlei (dry marsh).  The dunes of the Namib were created by sand carried by the wind from the coast. The sand here is over 5-million years old and is red due to its iron-oxide content. As the light changes during the day, so does the appearance of the dunes’ characteristic color, allowing for interesting photographs at any time. The wind in the Sossusvlei area blows from all directions causing the sand to form a star shape with multiple arms, hence the name “star dunes.”

Depart Sossusvlei on the one-hour flight back to Windhoek. Have lunch at Windhoek Country Club, followed by a city tour. Visit the Trans-Namib Transport Museum, the Independence Memorial Museum, the Evangelical Lutheran Church — a striking landmark in the city — and the Namibia Craft Centre.

Rejoin the train early evening for dinner.

Day 9: Cheetah Conservation Project

After a leisurely morning onboard the train, visit a cheetah conservation project in Otjiwarongo this afternoon.

Founded in Namibia in 1990, the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) is dedicated to saving the cheetah in the wild.

Transfer to Tsumeb station where the Pride of Africa  awaits. Lunch and afternoon tea are served as the train travels southwest towards the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy a 1920s-themed dinner on board this evening.

Day 12: Walvis Bay

Day 1: Depart Walvis Bay

After, return to the train for lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.

Day 3: Etosha National Park

Day 4: etosha national park.

Early morning game drive in the Etosha National Park, where blue wildebeest, mountain and plains zebra, giraffe, hyena, lion, cheetah, leopard as well as 340 species of birds may be spotted. Return to the lodge for breakfast and check-out.  Rejoin the  Pride of Africa  at Tsumeb station for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner on board.

Reviews From Our Travelers

Eleanor makes you feel like you are her only client. Always available to help with even the smallest detail. Our trip was absolutely trouble free. Everything worked exactly like we expected it to.

Vernon K., The Silk Road: Beijing to Moscow

My husband and I had the most incredible trip ever. Our experience on the Orient Express was so special and David our stewart was so competent. We loved the food and the people we met on board. I certainly have a greater understanding of Turkey and her people now thanks to him. We are so pleased we went!

Maureen R., Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

In a word, wonderful. I am so happy. I have traveled my entire life, but aging has put limits on my mobility. I was beginning to despair--would I be able to make more of my dreams come true? With the help of Rachel Hardy, the IRT team, and their associates at Remote Lands, I was able to see everything I had hoped for--and more--in comfort. Amazing! I am so grateful.

Diane G., Customized trip to China

Rates include all accommodation, meals, beverages on board (except international/French champagne), room service, limited laundry service on board, excursions, entrance fees, flights to/from Sossusvlei and government tax.

The Namibia Journey

Introduction

Journey from the savannahs of the Highveld to the Atlantic in the west.

Departing from Pretoria, the first stop is Kimberley, centre of one of the world’s famous diamond rushes to savour the 1870s atmosphere of the mining village. The train traverses the stark vistas of the Northern Cape to the Fish River Canyon and Garas Park with its quiver-tree forest. Continue across the beauty of the Kalahari Desert to Namibia’s capital Windhoek a lively, cosmopolitan city with a strong German flavour.

Then it’s a short flight to Sossusvlei, a stunning pan in the Namib Desert, for an overnight stay followed by wildlife viewing in Etosha National Park, ending in Walvis Bay.

The Train: Each train has accommodation carriages, dining cars, lounge car, small gift shop, smoking lounge and observation car with open-air balcony. Maintaining the spirit of a bygone era, there are no radios or television sets on board. The three types of suites include a dedicated host available at all times and services the suites daily.

Pullman Suite: Used on short journeys, cabins feature an en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and basin. During the day, the suites have a comfortable sofa-seat with a conversion to double or twin beds (side-by-side or upper and lower bunks) for the evening.

Deluxe Suite: Accommodates one or two passengers in double or twin beds with its own lounge area, and en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and basin. Includes a bar fridge filled with the on-board beverages of the guests choice.

Royal Suite: Takes up half a carriage with its own private lounge area and en-suite bathroom with Victorian bath, separate shower, toilet and basin. Accommodates one or two passengers in double or twin beds and includes a bar fridge filled with the on-board beverages of the passengers choice.

Day 1 : Pretoria

Depart Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria and travel south towards the goldfields of the Witwatersrand. Guests may freshen up in their suites before joining fellow travellers in the lounge car or observation car at the rear of the train. Lunch is served in the dining cars followed up by afternoon tea and dinner.

Day 2 : Kimberley

Arrive in Kimberley and visit the Big Hole and the Diamond Museum. Capital of the Northern Cape, Kimberley is well known for the discovery of diamonds that led to its establishment in 1871. Return to the train for lunch where the observation car will be leading the train until after tea. Travel through the Karoo, a vast semi-desert region that was once an enormous inland sea. Over million of years, volcanic matter was ground down and deposited as silt upon the seabed to form what geologists call the Karoo system.

Day 3 : Upington & the Orange River

This afternoon disembark the train for a walking tour of Upington with a sundowner cruise on the Orange River. The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa (2432km). It rises in the Drakensberg Mountains in Lesotho and flows westwards through South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean, forming part of the borders between South Africa and Lesotho and South Africa and Namibia. Attorney General of the Cape, Sir Thomas Upington was principally responsible for liquidating the business activities of Orange River pirates and capturing their leader, Klaas Lucas. When the desperadoes were finally chased away in 1884, the town was founded on the banks of the Orange River and named in his honour.

Day 4 : Fish River Canyon

After lunch, board vehicles for the one-hour drive to the Fish River Canyon. The Fish River rises in the centre of the country before flowing south into the Orange River on Namibia’s border with South Africa. It has formed the great Fish River Canyon – the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere and probably only second to Arizona’s Grand Canyon in terms of size. The vast rocky landscape breaks up into a series of spectacular cliffs. Its size is impressive 161km long, up to 27km wide and almost 550m at its deepest.

Day 5 : Kolmanskop & Luderitz

Take a one hour transfer drive to the ghost town of Kolmanskop, followed by lunch in Lüderitz. Lüderitz is known for its museum, colonial architecture and wildlife including seals, penguins, flamingos and ostriches. Look out for the illusive legendary horses rumoured to roam the Namib. Return to the train. Depart for Keetmanshoop. The observation car will be leading the train until after dinner.

Day 6 : Keetmanshoop & Garas Park

After breakfast, visit Keetmanshoop and Garas Park (Quiver Trees), home to roughly 300 specimens of the Aloe dichotomy. The prehistoric trees have forked branches that reach up to 5m making for great photographic opportunities. Return to the train for lunch. Depart for Mariental and enjoy dinner en route to Rehoboth

Day 7 : Sossusvlei

This morning pack a small overnight bag for the stay at Sossusvlei. After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for a light aircraft one-hour flight to a Sossusvlei lodge and check in. The dunes of the Namib Desert were created by sand carried by the wind from the coast of Namibia. The sand here is over five million years old and is red in colour due to its iron-oxide content. As the light changes during the day, so does the appearance of the dunes’ characteristic colour allowing for interesting photographs at any time. The wind in the Sossusvlei area blows from all directions causing the sand to form a star shape with multiple arms, hence the name “star dunes”. This afternoon enjoy a desert drive and bush dinner after sunset. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 8 : Sossusvlei & Windhoek

Enjoy an early morning desert drive with breakfast in the vlei. Transfer by light aircraft to Windhoek, where lunch will be taken at Windhoek Country Club, followed by a city tour. Windhoek is an attractive city surrounded by clusters of hills and the impressive Auas and Eros Mountains. The Trans-Namib Transport Museum outlines Namibian transport history, particularly that of the railway. The Independence Memorial Museum focuses on the anti-colonial resistance and the national liberation struggle of Namibia. Back on board the train, depart for Kranzberg and enjoy dinner.

Day 9 : Cheetah Conservation Project

After lunch, transfer to the cheetah conservation project in Otjiwarongo. Founded in Namibia in 1990, the CCF is dedicated to saving the cheetah in the wild.

Day 10 : Etosha National Park

This morning pack an overnight bag for your stay in Etosha. After breakfast transfer (one hour) to you Etosha lodge for overnight. Etosha National Park (22270km2) offers great game viewing with many species of mammals, birds and reptiles. It gets its name from the Etosha pan (4760km2), which almost entirely lies within the park. Etosha is a large salt pan forming part of the Kalahari basin and means ‘Great White Place’. Enjoy an afternoon’s game drive to spot the prolific wildlife, often around the waterholes, before enjoying dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 11 : Etosha National Park

Take an early morning game drive in the park while the wildlife are still active. Have a late breakfast at the lodge and transfer to Tsumeb Station to rejoin the train. The afternoon the train travels southwest towards the Atlantic Ocean as you enjoy a “1920’s” themed dinner.

Day 12 : Walvis Bay

Breakfast is served as you traverse the Namib Desert towards Walvis Bay. The Namib stretches for more than 2000km along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia and South Africa. The geology consists of sand seas near the coast while gravel plains and scattered mountain outcrops occur further inland. The name is of Khoekhoegowab origin and means “vast place”. Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for roughly 55-80 million years, the Namib may be the oldest desert in the world. Your Rovos Rail journey ends on arrival in Walvis Bay at midday.

  • Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, is located roughly in the country's centre.
  • It is located about 400 miles (650 kilometres) north of the Orange River and 760 miles (1,225 kilometres) north of Cape Town.
  • Safari lodges have guest rooms similar to a hotel with en-suite bathrooms. They are comfortably furnished with facilities normally associated with a hotel rooms, except your rooms are normally set in beautiful wilderness settings, with nature and wildlife around.
  • Tented lodges have rooms which are tents on a platform and with a roof and also have en-suite facilities with showers, flush toilets and hot water. Basically all the amenities of a hotel room, except canvas walls and roof.
  • The boutique lodges and camps can be very stylish and smart in terms of design and decor, often with very spacious rooms and even going so far in some cases as having plunge pools for each room.
  • Eco-camps and smaller tented camps have insect-proof tents with en-suite facilities including a safari shower and flush toilet.  They give a more authentic safari experience but the tents are comfortably furnished with proper beds and you don’t need to bring your own sleeping bag! The emphasis is usually on having excellent guides and great wildlife viewing away from the crowds. Guests often eat together and people travelling alone usually say that they found the atmosphere friendly and enjoyed meeting other like-minded travellers around the campfire in the evening or at dinner.
  • The Adventure Camps are a budget option with guests bringing their own sleeping bags and towels. Accommodation is in small dome tented with a mattress on the floor. Each tent has its own nearby cubicle with a flush toilet, safari shower, and wash basin. The Adventure Camps are suitable only for those who don’t mind “real camping” and can put with some degree of “roughing it”. Apart from the accommodation in simple dome tents, the meals and the guiding are the same standards as the higher quality camps and game drives are in 4x4 safari vehicles. For those on a limited budget, the Adventure Camps are a good alternative to the big tourist lodges and minibus tours for those for whom the safari experience is more important than hotel accommodation.
  • Before heading out for a Namibia safari , it’s important to receive a few key vaccinations.
  • The World Health Organization and Centre for Disease Control recommend the following vaccines. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Yellow Fever and Routine Vaccinations. Source: https://www.passporthealthusa.com/2016/06/which-vaccines-do-you-need-for-namibia/
  • June to October is the best time to visit Namibia - wildlife viewing in the dry season is the best in all national parks, especially in Etosha National Park. The newborn animals are also born in summer.

Rovos Rail to Namibia Itinerary

Below is the itinerary for the train journey from Pretoria to Namibia. Available in reverse, beginning in Walvis Bay, Namibia to Pretoria, South Africa.

11 am: Depart from Rovos Rail Station, Pretoria. Travel south via the goldfields of the Witwatersrand. Guests may freshen up in their suites; before joining fellow travelers in the lounge car or observation car at the rear of the train.

1 pm: Lunch is in the dining cars.

4.30 pm: Tea is in the lounge and observation cars.

7.30 pm: Enjoy dinner in the dining cars.

7 am: Breakfast is in the dining cars.

9.45 am: Enjoy a tour of Kimberley’s Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Kimberley, the capital of the Northern Cape; is well known for the discovery of diamonds that led to its establishment in 1871.

1 pm: Lunch is in the dining cars. The observation car will be leading the train until after tea. Travel through the Karoo, a vast semi-desert region that was once an enormous inland sea. Over millions of years, the volcanic matter was ground down and deposited as silt upon the seabed; to form what geologists call the Karoo system.

4.30 pm: Tea is in the lounge car and observation car at the front of the train.

7.30 pm: Dinner is in the dining cars en route to De Aar, an important railway junction.

7 am: Breakfast is in the dining cars until 10 am.

4 pm: Enjoy a walking tour of Upington with a sun downer cruise on the Orange River. The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa (2432km/1511mi). It rises in the Drakensberg Mountains in Lesotho and flows westwards through South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the borders between South Africa and Lesotho and South Africa and Namibia. Except for Upington, it does not pass through any major cities.

Attorney General of the Cape, Sir Thomas Upington; was principally responsible for liquidating the business activities of all the Orange River pirates. And capturing their leader, Klaas Lucas. When they were finally chased away in 1884; the town was founded on the banks of the Orange River and named in his honor.

4.30 pm: Tea is in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train.

7.30 pm: Dinner is in the dining cars en route to Ariumsvlei for border formalities with Namibia.

12.30 pm: Lunch is in the dining cars. The train travels along the southern reaches of the Kalahari Basin.

2 pm: Board vehicles for the one hour drive to the Fish River Canyon . The Fish River rises in the center of the country before flowing south into the Orange River on Namibia’s border with South Africa. It has formed the great Fish River Canyon; the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere and probably only second to Arizona’s Grand Canyon in terms of size. The vast rocky landscape breaks up into a series of spectacular cliffs. Its size is impressive: 161km long, up to 27km wide and almost 550m at its deepest.

7.30 pm: Dinner is in the dining cars en route to Aus.

6 am: Breakfast is in the dining cars until departure.

8 am: Transfer (±60 min) to the ghost town of Kolmanskop followed by lunch in Lüderitz . Lüderitz is known for its museum, colonial architecture and wildlife including seals, penguins, flamingos and ostriches. Look out for the illusive legendary horses rumored to roam the Namib.

7.30 pm: Dinner is in the dining cars.

7 am: Breakfast is served in the dining cars until departure.

1 pm: Return to the train for lunch. Depart for Mariental.

4.30 pm: Tea in the lounge and observation cars.

7.30 pm: Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Rehoboth

Please pack a small overnight bag for the stay in Sossusvlei. Tog bags will have been placed in your suite for your convenience. See below for inclusions / exclusions.

The dunes of the Namib were created by sand carried by the wind from the coast. The sand here is over 5-million years old and is red due to its iron-oxide content. As the light changes during the day so do the appearance of the dunes’ characteristic color allowing for interesting photographs at any time. The wind in the Sossusvlei area blows from all directions causing the sand to form a star shape with multiple arms, hence the name “star dunes”.

4.30 pm: Afternoon desert drive and a bush dinner after sunset. Overnight at the lodge.

An early wake-up call with tea and coffee. Enjoy a desert drive with breakfast in the vlei. Return to the lodge to use the facilities, check-out and transfer to the airstrip.

1 pm: Lunch at Windhoek Country Club followed by a city tour. Visit the Trans-Namib Transport Museum, the Independence Memorial Museum, the Evangelical Lutheran Church (a striking landmark) and the Namibia Craft Centre in the old Breweries Building. Situated in Namibia’s central highlands, Windhoek is an attractive city surrounded by clusters of hills and the impressive Auas and Eros Mountains. The Trans-Namib Transport Museum outlines Namibian transport history, particularly that of the railway. The Independence Memorial Museum focuses on the anti-colonial resistance and the national liberation struggle of Namibia.

7 am: Breakfast is in the dining cars until 10 am. Transfer to your lodge in Etosha National Park . Check-in and enjoy lunch. Etosha National Park (22 270km²) offers great game viewing. It gets its name from the Etosha pan (4760km2), a large salt pan forming part of the Kalahari Basin. Etosha means ‘Great White Place’.

3 pm: Afternoon game drive (approximately 3 hours).

7 pm: Dinner at the lodge and overnight.

An early wake-up call with tea and coffee. Enjoy a game drive in the Etosha National Park. Return to the lodge for breakfast and check-out. Transfer (60 min) to the train at Tsumeb Station.

7.30 pm: Dinner while the train travels southwest towards the Atlantic Ocean.

7 am: Breakfast is in the dining cars until 10 am. Traverse the Namib Desert towards Walvis Bay. The Namib Desert stretches for more than 2000km along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia and South Africa. The name is of Khoekhoegowab origin and means “vast place”. Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for roughly 55-80 million years, the Namib may be the oldest desert in the world. The geology consists of sand seas near the coast while gravel plains and scattered mountain outcrops occur further inland.

This Luxurious African Train Trip Takes You From South Africa to Zimbabwe on Vintage Railcars — Here's What It's Like

Rovos Rail has a fleet of six full trains traveling 11 different itineraries throughout Africa.

Chris Wallace is a New York-based writer and photographer. He recently published his first book, "Twentieth-Century Man," about the late artist Peter Beard. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Financial Times , and other publications.

That first morning aboard the Rovos Rail, opening the blinds of my cabin to see nothing but bush as far as the hills on the horizon, is something I will never forget. As thrilling as was the process of boarding, with all of the brass-band-festivity at the company’s Pretoria station in South Africa (complete with sparkling wine and a bevy of resident peacocks swirling around to see us off), it was this sensation of crawling awake — maybe it was the sounds of a wizened old acacia tree scratching by, or the rhythmic shunt of the track that did it — to find that we were fully on safari, on a train, that stayed with me throughout the journey.

Like any good Agatha Christie novel, my trip started at a grand hotel in town, in my case, the Four Seasons Westcliff, in Johannesburg, where we met the suspects or other travelers bound for the train. Sitting on the hotel’s deck overlooking the city's trees, all rusting into gold with the autumn, and spying on elephants at the zoo, the game of guessing at the backstories of your fellow travelers began in earnest. And this is one of my favorite parts of traveling, I must say, the sly way of soft-meeting people, just by being in their company, in a casual but concentrated way, getting to know their behavior, their likes and dislikes and things, before you’ve even properly met.

Lyndie Pavier Photography/Courtesy of Rovos Rail

The next stage, of course, is the introduction at the station in Pretoria, amid the peacocks and Champagne and the hustle and bustle of porters loading our luggage into compartments. Soon after, though, I was utterly lost in the experience of the train itself, in the nostalgically rickety-ness of locomotion, in the feeling of being in a rolling reenactment of "Out of Africa." The tartan upholstery on the couches in the lounge cars and the slightly frilly, chintzy decor make the communal areas feel a bit like gentlemen’s clubs of yore; the daintiness of the dining cars, like something out of a doll house kit or a film set — which is to say, 100 percent my jam.

DOOKPHOTO/Courtesy of Rovos Rail

Once on board, of course, there is a bit of a frenzy — for me, anyway — to sort of mentally map the train, to walk its length, explore all the nooks and crannies, to get a sense of its movement, the physical and structural narrative of the train, if you will, and how and when each of the vignettes might best be seen, when they might come to life, or fall comfortingly quiet.

The first gathering for aperitifs is always quite fun because of the overwhelming excitement in the air and the sort of brittle energy as people bounce off walls and furniture, having the best time of their lives with the whole trip ahead of them. It is fun to reflect on this moment once we have all learned to sway and dance with the train's rhythm, when the edges of our anticipation have smoothed, and we are all on the same tune.

I watch with growing warmth a family of particularly rigid and cantankerous riders, at first alarmed and angered at every shunt and jostle of the train’s movement, gradually go to jelly over the first couple of days, finally moving through the cars like happy Jamiroquai.

Greg Beadle, Beadle Photo/Courtesy of Rovos Rail

Rovos Rail was started by (and named for) Rohan Vos, who built the first series of cars in 1987 as a personal caravan, with room for an office and a gym, and cabins for his family as they moved around Southern Africa. Financial and transit necessity compelled him to make the train available for paying passengers shortly after and, as the company celebrated its 35th anniversary at the time of my ride, there are six full trains (which can accommodate up to 72 passengers), making 11 different itineraries, spanning 10 countries.

The cars making up each of the trains were mostly built between 1911 and 1938. Though they have been elaborately refurbished and modernized (including USB ports), the vintage romance of train travel is at the heart of the company’s mission.

As Vos’s daughter, who now runs the company, told us as she welcomed us onboard and reminded us of the dress codes, cell phones, and other electronics were not allowed in communal areas, as the idea was to connect with the experience and disconnect from... everything else. (I think it was only me (making videos of the train with my phone) who flagrantly broke the prohibition — everyone else willingly gave themselves over to the spellbinding enchantment of the ride.)

As a personal aside, it seems weird to say, but without cell service, internet, emails, and Instagram, and that constant wave of anxiety and information coming out of them, I realized just how tired I was (always am?), and slept like the dead on the train.

Not that it was all on the train! My journey from Pretoria to Victoria Falls made many stops for excursions and activities, including incredible game drives through Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe and the cartoon landscape of giant granite boulders in Matobo National Park before rolling into the legitimate wonder of the world that is Victoria Falls.

Once I arrived there, in Livingstone, I traveled across to the Zambia side of the falls and checked into the absolute fantasia that is The Royal Livingstone Hotel, where giraffes walked with me to the gym, and zebras milled about by the pool and looked back at my notes for the trip.

All of them are about the same as this, from the last afternoon aboard the train:

I just want to remember this moment. Reading "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" in the bar car of the Rovos Rail, chugging along toward Vic Falls, drinking a Negroni, snacking on chili biltong in my linen suit and Kim Jones shirt. A life highlight. How does someone get so lucky?

Rovos Rail Bar Staff

  • A toast to our bartenders

All hail International Wine Day ! In his departure speech, our CEO Rohan often jokes about how seriously we take drinking here at Rovos Rail so we thought we’d pour ourselves a glass of bubbly and tell you a little about the bar staff on board and how they can often be the toast of the train.

Operating a luxury product can come with some tough customers so, as we are not positioned to employ qualified sommeliers, we provide regular bar, wine and cocktail training for our bartenders and ensure they know about our incredible South African offerings. The two-year pandemic gave us pause to revisit our menus and include more local produce wherever possible. In the last decade, it has been wonderful to see young entrepreneurs creating interesting wines, spirits and mixers and, with South Africa being one of the top 10 traditional wine-producing countries in the world, we have a brilliant selection to choose from. See our wine and spirit stories below.

Preparation for each journey begins in our beverage store where a dedicated on-site team pre-packs the stock required on board. This includes wine, brandy, gin, rum, vodka, whisky, spirits, digestifs, grappa, liqueur, beer, cider, non-alcoholic options and mixers. The bartenders check, count and load the stock into cages, which are trolleyed to the train. Then it’s off to the kitchen store where they check out their glassware, swizzle sticks, olives, Maraschino cherries and all the other goodies they need, which are also trolleyed to the train. Once on board, they unload and pack the bars to their liking as it is their domain for the duration of the journey. When the guests arrive, the fun begins.

Out of our whole crew, the bartenders are the most recognised and sought after as they not only serve all the guests but sit up late into the night chatting away with them. They sometimes make long-lasting connections, especially on our long journeys. We’re fortunate that we haven’t had too many raucous parties but there have been many dawns met with strong coffees and Bloody Marys at breakfast.

Our teams work hard and deserve the lovely feedback they regularly receive about their service. During one of our recent video shoots, Tristan – one of our young barmen – happened to be available so we followed him around for a while. Listening to him talk about his passion for South African wine and our selection on board left an impression on us. To see a young man so eager to learn and do his job well, and leverage the education and opportunities received at Rovos Rail, feels hugely rewarding.

So, as it is International Wine Day – and our 35th birthday – let’s raise a glass to our stellar team and all the sommeliers, connoisseurs and winemakers around the world. Cheers!

Stories: Floral Rum , Rum , Vodka , Meerlust , Thelema , Hamilton Russell , Vagabond , Mr Bubbles , Silverthorn , Fable Mountain .

Kenya-tanzania june-october great migration safari.

The migration of antelopes and zebras is a drama of life and death, lurking predators, happy rescues, this is the rumble of the hooves of a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras. Ungulates make their circular cycle from Serengeti to Masai Mara and back, this cycle never stops. The apogee is "Crossing" - this is the crossing of the river, when antelopes jump into the water in a single rush, where crocodiles and hippos are waiting for them. On the shore, they become easy prey for lions. Hyenas and other predators flock to the feast. They say migration is a great show of nature, which no screen of the world can convey - you must see it live, with your own eyes. A jungle full of birds and primates merges with the open savannas, home to everyone's favorite African animals. Add the mighty streams of the Nile, the Rwenzori mountains and Lake Victoria, the largest in Africa, and you have a difficult choice of what to include in the tour program.

Why Ethiopia? Tribes and Old Testament History, Mysteries, and a Unique Culture. Its alphabet, its own time, is the only country in Africa that has never been a colony. We do not expect 5 * hotels, but we get 5 * service. We are diving into the primitive era, we are renewing ourselves - you will not see this on safari, this is a new insight! But if you want, you can combine it with safari and Zanzibar and the rest of Africa. The best Russian guides, and our 17 years of experience allow us to offer a trip for every taste and interest. And by the way, in May there is a company for the tour Ethiopia + Tanzania.

The unique secrets of Africa It's unusual!

When you get here for the first time, you realize that you imagined everything differently than it really is. In different African countries, there are iconic places known throughout the world. They are included in most of the popular tours to Africa. And those who have visited Africa have seen the main ones. But there are corners that few people know about in wide circles. You will learn about such protected routes in different countries of South, East and West Africa in this section. The section is regularly updated.
