Open Roads review: "A cozy, nostalgic road trip that can't quite get into gear"

Open Roads screenshot

GamesRadar+ Verdict

Open Roads' mother-daughter travelog about discovering long-buried family secrets is heartfelt, but this lightweight driving adventure doesn't reach the momentum of the mystery it so carefully maps out.

+Compelling mystery set-up involving long-buried family secrets and a search for the truth

Thoughtful writing and pitch-perfect voice acting make characters feel authentic and empathetic

Detailed environments and item interaction make for a more intimate story

The overall story lacks forward momentum, with the main mystery winding down just as it's getting started

Missed opportunities to delve further into the more challenging aspects of its themes

Why you can trust GamesRadar+ Our experts review games, movies and tech over countless hours, so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about our reviews policy.

The heart of any story in the road trip genre is the journey, not necessarily the arrival, or sometimes not even arriving at all. Open Roads is a driving adventure that, although reached its intended destination, never felt like it fully arrived. It has an intriguing set-up: a mother and daughter hitting the road to discover long-buried family secrets told through considered conversations and snooping through dust-coated mementos. But just as you think the story is settling into a familiar rhythm, it hits the brakes, halting all momentum for the mystery it so carefully mapped out. What at first feels like a build-up to a tyre and tarmac travelog adventure, instead feels like a quick nip to the corner shop.

Open Roads follows teenager Tess and single mum Opal on a spur-of-the-moment road trip prompted by the discovery of a hidden trove of diary entries and letters stashed away by their recently deceased grandmother/mother. Wanting to know more about these long-lost secrets, the two set off on a road trip, the two treading the same paths, buildings, and highways that their family traversed decades before.

Release date : March 28, 2024 Platform(s) : PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One Developer : Open Roads Team Publisher : Annapurna Interactive

The mystery concerns the true mapping of the duo's family tree, with a paper trail of notes, letters, and snippets of written memoirs guiding Tess and Opal to a string of long-abandoned family homes. Each chapter sees you playing as Tess, freely poking around one of these 3D environments and picking up objects for a closer look. In the same way as Life is Strange and Unpacking, Open Roads finds intimacy in everyday objects and the game's opening chapter is a great example of it. The first location is the family home as Tess packs up her room and wanders around the now sparse house filled with moving boxes.

Photos, bills, and written notes create the foundations of this family portrait, but there's joy in picking up the most mundane objects just to have a nose. What's great is that you can call Opal over to give commentary and share memories about particular items, further adding to the importance of these possessions. A blockbuster-style VHS tape of Clueless, a library book about bootlegging, an obnoxiously coloured work uniform – it's not only about the important stuff but we learn the more subtle quirks of these characters too.

Other pit stops on the road include a handful of abandoned environments which are where Open Roads shines. Rummaging around these old, forgotten places feels like you're excavating further into this family's history. They really capture the beauty of somewhere that has been lost to time, and snooping through the dust and grime to find these important relics feels gratifying. Often you'll need to find keys to locked boxes or items to progress the story (a screwdriver to crack open a car's glove compartment, for example), it's a simple way of adding to the mystery and contributes to the feeling that you're actively seeking out answers instead of them being plonked conveniently in front of you.

Blast from the past

These mementos are just objects, but what gives them meaning and purpose are their roles in the family history. I couldn't care about these environments and objects if it weren't for the fact that I'm genuinely invested in the game's characters, and Open Roads does a fantastic job at making you care about both Tess and Opal, in both the writing and what the voice actors have brought to the audio booth. Kaitlyn Dever brings such warmth to 16-year-old Tess. Her excitement is so utterly contagious and she can masterfully make Tess' teenage bluntness come across as comical and endearing.

Keri Russell who plays Opal gives the character fantastic nuance. Every time she talks about her past and upbringing there's a faraway tone in her voice, almost as if she's been transported back to that moment. The mostly static sequences where it's just the two of them chatting in the car highlight their mother-daughter chemistry – even their bickering feels authentic and familiar. Oddly, there's minimal audio and music throughout the game, but the duo's acting carries the atmosphere from beginning to end.

Complementing the actor's stellar performances are the colorful 2D character animations. These portraits are fairly stationary and cycle through a carousel of gestures that convey just enough to color the tone of the person speaking. These charming animated flairs also happen when Tess picks up particular objects. Instead of having the object float in dead space as you pick it up and turn it over, Tess' hand will appear grasping the item – holding up a postcard, flipping over a photograph, or turning a page in a notebook. They're lovely animated details that, again, evoke an intimate connection between the player and the object.

Needs more gas

Open Roads screenshot

With an engaging mystery set-up, charming animation flourishes, plus the brilliant character acting and writing – Open Roads' first hour feels like you're buckling into a cozy road trip, one with mystery and discovery at every pitstop, punctuated with great dialogue and character work. But as the first hour rolls into the second, and then crawls to the third (final) hour, it becomes apparent that the scale of this mystery is actually quite small in scope, with storylines gradually plodding into an underwhelming stop. It's a shame because the story introduces a handful of interesting topics – the struggle of being a child with divorced parents, the pain of keeping secrets from those you love, and the dynamics between a ruptured family – but these feel unresolved or, at minimum, reach an unsatisfying conclusion.

Tess and Opal – as wonderful as they are – don't grow on their adventure. I never felt like the two understood the other in any new ways, or grew closer (or apart) as a mother and daughter. The road trip feels less like a journey pursuing answers to tough questions and more like a quick holiday break. There are dialogue options, but there's no web of consequences or decision-making, leaving the ending feeling like a handful of missed opportunities.

Even with its flaws, Open Roads still remains a road trip adventure worth playing. It's thematically lightweight with little conflict, which may suit those looking for something more in line with a cozy adventure instead of a character-driven mystery game. It's disappointing in that it doesn't successfully address the challenging subject matters it introduces, but – most certainly here – it's about the journey, not the end destination.

The beautiful road trip of Road 96 launches on Xbox and PlayStation

Neil Watton

Since launch on PC and Nintendo Switch in the latter half of 2021, Road 96 has picked up a ton of acclaim. Steam users have given it all the ‘Very Positive’ reviews under the sun and in recent times it’s gathered up multiple other awards. Now though it’s time for that crazy, rather beautiful, road trip of Road 96 to take place on Xbox and PlayStation.

Available today for play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and PS5 (as well as still on Nintendo Switch and PC) is Road 96.

A game created by the team at DigixArt, helped along by Ravenscourt, Road 96 is an ever-evolving story-driven adventure, one that will take players to all manner of exciting and beautiful spots. Inspired by the creations of Tarantino, The Coen Brothers and Bong Joon-ho it promises to deliver a trip of a lifetime as players attempt to get to grips with a number of situations.

When you’ve got Valiant Hearts and Memories Retold in your back catalogue, it proves you know a thing or two about game creation, and that’s obviously the case for the team behind this. You see, Road 96 may just be releasing on Xbox and PlayStation, but it’s recently taken home multiple awards at the Pégases Awards too – Best Indie Games, Beyond the Indie Game, Best Accessibility, Best Sound Design and Best Narrative Design have all come this way. Further to that, we included Road 96 in our Up Next piece, detailing the most exciting games to release on Xbox in April 2022.

“We are so proud to have won these, we were hoping for one; five is unbelievable,” said Yoan Fanise, CEO & Creative Director at DigixArt . “There is a large audience waiting for innovative experiences nowadays the gaming world has changed drastically over the last years. Road 96 is a collaborative creation, a reflection of the teams diversity and shows that success is not a matter of a project’s size.”

Throw in a visual style that stuns, a soundtrack that hits and more, and it’s easy to see how Road 96 has gathered up such acclaim.

The key features in all include:

  • Road 96 is a crazy, beautiful road-trip. The discovery of exciting places and unusual people on your own personal journey to freedom.
  • An ever-evolving story-driven adventure inspired by Tarantino, The Coen Brothers and Bong Joon-ho. Made by the award-winning creators of Valiant Hearts and Memories Retold. Announced as part of the OMEN Presents initiative from HP Inc.
  • Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters and wacky situations. Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.
  • A stunning visual style, a soundtrack filled with 90s hits and a thousand routes through the game combine so each player can create their own unique stories on Road 96.

Similar vibes hit us during our play of Road 96 on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, allowing chance to provide a full review of how Road 96 plays on Xbox Series X|S .

For now though, hit up the Xbox Store , the PlayStation Store or either of the Nintendo eShop or Steam where Road 96 has been unraveling for a while and enjoy the creativity that it delivers. £15.99 will sort the download you need.

Road 96 brings chaotic road trips to PS4, PS5, and Xbox today

Image of Jordan Devore

More console versions are here following the initial PC and Nintendo Switch launch

DigixArt and Ravenscourt launched Road 96 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S today, and the cycle is complete — it’s everywhere it needs to be! The game is $19.99 on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store , and the cross-gen versions are bundled up.

Road 96 is a branching road-trip narrative adventure that hasn’t left my mind since I played it last year. For all of its quirks and kinks and less-than-ideal baseline performance on Nintendo Switch, I had such a messy, memorable time carving my way through the tumultuous nation of Petria in search of a brighter future across the border. Road 96 is going to be a swing and a miss for a lot of people, but it can also really resonate — at least, it did for me! And if you’ve been waiting on more console ports, the time is now.

It’s one of those games that truly goes for it , and while that approach can fall flat when too many elements miss the mark, collectively, I had a good time.

With cornball characters and dramatic story events swinging back and forth between intentional and (seemingly) unintentional humor, it’s interesting to hear how the creators think of Road 96 . In the PlayStation and Xbox port announcement, the studio describes “moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters, and wacky situations.” That’s… very accurate! This is a road trip game in more ways than one.

In real life, I can’t get in a car and drive — or even ride! — for any solid chunk of time without something going wrong. A missed turn. An awkward course correction. A general sense that “this can’t possibly be the fastest way there.” Shenanigans, every damn time.

In the exaggerated, cartoonish, yet highly political world of Road 96 , I feel right at home as a wayward teen who has to deal with detours every step of the way.

Just keep your cool in the taxi.

Open Roads (Xbox) - Unengaging Mysteries & Low-Energy Thrills Take Their Toll In This Bland Tale

Review Open Roads (Xbox) - Unengaging Mysteries & Low-Energy Thrills Take Their Toll In This Bland Tale

A surprisingly ineffective road trip

Open Roads has been described as "an interactive movie mystery thriller", one that plays out in the form of a deeply personal roadtrip. Of course, this particular roadtrip happens to be the creation of the devs behind the fantastic Gone Home, so it feels as though a good old mystery filled with plenty of thrills...

Minecraft is a top survival game.

Tales of survival have long fired people’s imaginations. They bring together adventure, danger and ingenuity together in a thrilling mix that can be safety experienced in the comfort of the home. Video games are a natural fit for survival games by combining exacting worlds, resource management and deadly combat into their own genre. We’ve collected a list of some of the best survival games available on console and PC. New players should try out the classics while veterans might check out this list and discovered a new way to test their abilities.

Top Survival Games

Survival games focus on players working hard to make their characters survive and thrive in a harsh setting. They must gather resources, survive encounter with hostile life forms and construct tools and equipment to improve their chances on making it to the next day in game.

The games on this list have been chosen through a mixture of online popularity, critical acclaim and editorial consideration. They span settings ranging from hostile planets to other times and places. These are the best survival games available to play right now.

15. Ark: Survival Evolved

There’s one important thing that Studio Wildcard realized about the best survival games when developing Ark: Survival Evolved. What they need are dinosaurs because dinosaurs are cool. Building bases and crafting weapons can be fun but taming dinosaurs are what makes this title roar above the rest.

Not only has the game evolved during its early access release but the spin off games have come for different audiences. Ark: Survival Ascended revived the game for new generation consoles. PixArk brought a friendlier face to a procedurally generated version.

Ark: Survival Evolved is avalable on Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch and Stadia.

14. Escape From Tarkov

Most survival games focus on a long term, emergent story. The players are dropped into a hostile environment with the bare necessities to survive. Part of the joy of the game comes in players looking back and seeing how far they’ve come after putting hours into the experience.

Developer Battlestate Games’ title throws much of those ideas out like so many spent bullet casings. Escape From Tarkov plays more like a wartime FPS mixed with the frenzied play of a battle royal. Players have to balance collecting resources which they can sell for upgrades in between rounds with surviving long enough to get to the extraction point.

Escape From Tarkov is available on Microsoft Windows.

13. Palworld

Palworld seems like the next evolution — if you’ll pardon the pun — of games like Pokemon and Monster Hunter. In a world where people compete to collect cute, furry creatures, it seems like the adults would do more than just lock them away in containers until they were ready to fight. Developer Pocketpair eyes the genre in a satirical light but backs it up with gameplay that’s seriously addicting.

Players have to gather resources, build tools and put together bases that act as fast travel points in the world. The pals can do battle too, through the can be just as valuable at bases doing tasks that work in the background while the players go out hunting. They also must be careful to play well not just with other players but with factions that have their own purposed for catchings pals.

Palworld is available on Windows, Xbox One,Xbox Series X/S and macOS.

12. Frostpunk

For most survival games the focus is on the rugged individual. That makes sense for the genre, since many of the best survival games are one person against a hostile world. Frostpunk focuses on one person but it makes them the leader of a town trying to survive a world where volcanic winter has set in.

Mixing in city management elements change the nature of the needs to survive and the questions the player must ask and answer. What might be the right call for one person might be a horrible decision when it affects all the settlers of a city. It also adds the perils of politics with the result of too many hard choices meaning the game ends with the player out of power.

Frostpunk is available on Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and macOS. Frostpunk 2 will be released b y 11 bit studios in 2024 for Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

11. Don’t Starve

Not every survival game throws players into a harsh wilderness full of wild creatures. Don’t Starve brings players to the nightmare world of The Constant. Players must manage three essential elements of their human condition to survive; their health, their hunger an their sanity.

Klei Enertainment’s survival game that features permadeath where players must start over at the beginning if their character dies. Luckily, the Tim Burton style graphics and gameplay help take the edge off of losing a character’s progression. Don’t Starve is also one of the best survival games on mobile phones.

Don’t Starve is available on Linux,Windows, OSX PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS.

10. Sons Of The Forest

For most people, survivng a helicopter crash would be enough of an ordeal to make them want to go home and stay in bed for weeks. Sons of the Forest opens with that harrowing experience before dropping the player on an island where they must build shelter, gather food and try to survive until rescue. That’s before the mutant cannibals show up.

Endnight Games built a sequel to The Forest that improves on the original in many ways. That includes multiple endings, new ways to play and even a Peaceful Mode where players can just chill out in the woods without feeling watched.

Sons Of The Forest is available on Windows.

9. Pacific Drive

The classic American road trip is a small sampler of the best survival games. Everyone packs up essentials like snacks and songs and does their best to coexist in a small space to get to someplace fun. Ironwood Studios turns this experience into a full-on survival game with Pacific Drive .

In this game players must try to escape a Pacific Northwest that’s been fundamentally warped into a hostile place. The players only companion is their car which also serves as their home base full of upgrades and essential equipment. The game encourages run after run to try and escape with each failure revealing a little more about the bigger story and how to get a little further the next time.

Pacific Drive is available on Windows and Playstation 5.

8. Subnautica

Most survival games drop the player on an island or some hostile wilderness. Subnautica drops the player onto a vast alien world that is mostly water. In addtion to the usual metrics of hunger and thirst, the player also has to fight off an alien disease known as Kharaa.

Developer Unknwon Worlds Entertainment does a great job in balancing the danger of survival with the beauty of the water world. It can be a lot of fun to just float in creative mode and let the serene vibes of the deep take over. It’s also a great challenge in hardcore mode where if the player dies, their save file is permanently deleted.

Subnautica is available on Windows, mac OS, PlayStation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

7. Grounded

It’s easy to see that developer Obsidian Entertainment’s biggest inspiration for Grounded 1989’s Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. There are plenty of dangers in the typical backyard that don’t require a game to be set in a far off wilderness. When the players have been shrunk down, spiders and other bugs become massive creatures to be defeated.

The overall plotline of the game focuses on the four players doing their best to reconstruct the process that can return them to form. This game also has a bit of a sense of humor compaed to most of the other on the less. But it still can be a challenging experience to build and defend bases from big backyard creatures.

Grounded is available on Windows Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

6. Resident Evil Village

Every game on this list owes at least a tip of the cap to Capcom’s genre defining survival horror series. People that have never played any other survival game have still likely spent a little time on the run from the horrows spawned by the Umbrella Corporation. These games taught generations the importance of inventory managment, puzzle solving skills and the importance of using ammo only when absolutely necessary.

Resident Evil Village offers a return to form for the game which has experiments will all kinds of gameplay twists, tweaks and genre experiments. It’s also the birthplace of Lady Dimitrescu who set cosplayers and meme addicts on fire upon the game’s release in 2021. The recent remakes are worth checking out for fans who missed the originals but this game reflects a series that’s slowly changing with the times.

Resident Evil Village is available on Stadia, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, macOS, Nintendo Switch and iOS.

5. Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West and its predecessory Horizon Zero Dawn have become one of the breakout franchises in the current console era. These games blend stealth action, open world exploraton and survival crafting mechanics into a potent mix that’s won developer Guerilla Games dozens of awards.

No other games match the beauty of the dinosaur-inspired machines that Aloy hunts for parts and supplies. The game’s storylines offers a compelling mystery that give the survival aspects a strong spine. The series looks to expand into the beloved realm of LEGO games, too, with the recently announced LEGO Horizon Adventures.

Horizon Forbidden West is available on Playstation 4, Playstation 5 and Windows.

Facepunch Studios helped determine the state of modern suvival games when it released Rust into ealt access in 2013. Over the next five years, players helped the developers refine the game into a brutal survival experience. What started out as another zombie survival horror game turned into something more unique.

The developers continue to update the game to this day. Rust has more of a post apocalyptic feel to it appealing to fans of media like Mad Max. It can be a little harder to get into these days but its still a seminal survival experience.

Rust is available on Windows, PlayStation 4,Xbox One and mac iOS.

3. No Man’s Sky

This game is an example of suviving in real life as well as within the game. Hello Games released this game back in 2016 in a disaterous launch that upset many of the fans who were eager to play. But after years of refinements, community building and several free batches of downloadable content adding the features players wanted as well as new one, No Man’s Sky has become one of the giants of the survival genre.

Players fly from planet to planet engaging prospecting for resources, encountering aliens and building bases and other pieces of technology. There’s a big story arc that can drive players through the game or they can just decide to drift on the solar wind and do their own thing. This sprawling galaxy deploys seamlessly, too, allowing players to lift off from planet-side to orbit and beyond without loading screens.

No Man’s Sky is available on Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Playstation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, macOS and iPadOS.

Iron Gate Studio’s viking simulator is still technically in early access but most of Valheim ’s fans would agree it has more polish already than many final releases on the marketplace. Rather than mere survival, the players of Valheim must survive to achieve a loftier goal; prove themselves worthy for Valhalla.

Players prove their worth by slaying the seven bosses of each region in their version of Valheim. Before that, however they’ve got to spend their time honing their skills, building safe havens and exploring to find the different creatures that give up important resources. Players can choose to go it alone or team up with friends to reach these lofty goals.

Valheim is available on Linux, Windows, macOS, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

1. Minecraft

It’s easy to forget that, buried uder years of tie-in novels, merchandise, spin-off games and saturation into pop culture, Minecraft kicked off what we now called the survival genre back in 2009. Mojang Studios laid down the fundamentals of crafting, building and combat under a simple set of graphics that have allows millions of players to build creations that would put the greatest real world architects to shame. It remains the best survival game even if it’s often written off as something for kids.

That’s part of its appeal. Anyone can pick up and play Minecraft on any one of a dozen platforms. It works well for casual play but also rewards hardcore grinding for players who want to marathon the game for hours on end. On top of that, there’s a robust marketplace of mods and add-ons that let every player customize the experience exactly the way they want.

Minecraft is available on Window,s, macOS, Linux, Android iOS, iPadOS, Xbox 360, Raspberry Pi, Windows Phone, PlayStation 3, Fire OS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Apple TV, tvO, Nintendo Switch, New Nintendo 3DS and ChromeOS.

Bottom Line

Survival games offer a thrilling mix of creation and destruction. Whether hunting dinosaurs, building space bases or creating blocky paradises, players can create their own worlds to show off to their friends.
