My friend and I went on both the waterfall and cape tribulation tours, and they were amazing!!! We got to see and experience so much in two days. Our tour guide Charlie was so great, he had so much information to share and made the tours fun and engaging for everyone!!

An absolute banger of a tour! You will not regret booking with Uncle Brian’s Tours. We had the pleasure of Cousin Rohan and he made a ‘liquid sunshine’ (rainy) day the best day ever - full of energy and positivity. The food and snacks were incredible and so delicious. Thank you so much!

Had Brad as a tour guide who was epic 👌did the two day cape tribbin tour and it was perfect. Really enjoyed the two days from start to finish! Saw a cassowary, snakes, spiders and lots of insects which was pretty cool. Also saw some crocs as well which was pretty awesome.

Was totally awesome experience. Went both tours - one with ‘cousin’ Paul and one with ‘cousin’ Charlie. Had an amazing fun time seeing new places, had lots of good laughs, and had an informative experience at the same time. 10/10 recommend.

Had an absolute amazing day on the Cape trib 1 day tour. Adam was the best tour guide!! Hilarious, very knowledgeable and went above and beyond. Also learnt so many things from him. Thank you Adam for making this tour one to remember!

Did the Cape tribulation tour with Charley. Was absolutely amazing! The best organised tour I have ever done. Charley was a great tour guide, we had a fun group and value for money is also good. Besides the bus+guide, it also includes lunch, ferry and fees and a croc river cruise.

Rainforest and Nocturnal Wildlife Spotlighting Tours Cairns

The Wait-a-While Rainforest Tour takes you wildlife spotting by both day and NIGHT! Visiting the World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics Rainforest National Parks from Cairns, we have been hosting small (max 11 people) personal rainforest nocturnal wildlife spotlighting tours into the world’s oldest continuously surviving rainforest near Cairns for more than 30 years.

With an impressive success rate, we take our guests to the Atherton Tablelands to observe animals, such as the elusive platypus (we have a 90% + success rate) and the rare tree kangaroos, in their natural habitat as well as the nocturnal animals.

Cairns is a major tourist destination with thousands of visitors coming here each year to experience the Great Barrier Reef and yet relatively few discover the Cairns Tablelands (sometimes known as the Atherton Tablelands).

The Tablelands are within easy reach of Cairns offering a shorter drive time than any Daintree rainforest tours and greater rainforest wildlife spotlighting opportunities. This allows our tours to depart in the early afternoon. As the rainforest comes alive at night (80% of animals in Australia are nocturnal or more active at night), our spotlights enable us to capture the animals up in the canopy.

Our tour is best suited to active people who enjoy walking.  Part of the experience is the looking for the wildlife and that requires following trails through the forest.  The ground can be uneven and often muddy with medium inclines. So unfortunately we are not disable/wheelchair accessible. During the tour we usually cover around 3-4km on foot spread over at least 4 sites. The best time of day to spot wildlife in Australia is at dusk through to nighttime so you need to be comfy walking in the dark as well, however all the tracks we use at night are on flat safe ground.

Experiencing the  tropical rainforest at night is something you will remember, especially with an informative guide to help you understand this magnificent wildlife environment.

Tour Description:

After being picked up from your hotel (please note for hotels in Port Douglas there is an extra $150 per booking pick up fee) we go in search of Australian native animals around Cairns on our rainforest wildlife spotlighting tour. We make a series of short drives to visit several locations so you get a taste for the variety of sights in this area. Your guide will then introduce you to some of the world’s most unusual animals, including the elusive platypus (we have a 90% success rate), tree kangaroos, possums, gliders, flying foxes, bandicoots, echidnas, snakes, frogs and many others.

On the tour we will also learn about the tropical rainforest and how local Aboriginal tribes use the vegetation to make tools and to heal and make remedies to solve everyday common ailments.

 Testimonials Alistair - Switzland

We (2 adults, 3 kids) had the most incredible experience at Mossman Gorge, Daintree Rainforest & Crocodile Cruise, and it wouldn't have been the same without our fantastic host and guide, Rasa. From start to finish, Rasa made sure our day was nothing short of spectacular! First and foremost, the delicious array of fresh fruit Rasa provided was a refreshing and healthy treat. It set the perfect tone for the adventure ahead, keeping us energized and ready to explore the wonders of the rainforest. The attention to detail and thoughtfulness in catering to our needs was truly impressive. We were really impressed about Rasa's ability to strike a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. The day was filled with exciting activities and thrilling moments during the crocodile cruise and the tour through the rainforest yet Rasa managed to create a laid-back atmosphere where we never felt rushed. It allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural surroundings and appreciate the beauty of the river and the rainforest at a relaxed pace. The swim at the end of the rainforest tour in the gorge gave us a really refreshing and revitilasing end to the day. The entire trip was a day full of adventure and fun, and I cannot recommend this tour enough. If you're looking for a memorable experience led by a knowledgeable and caring guide, Rasa is the person to choose. Thank you for an unforgettable journey that will stay with us for a lifetime!

1 Day Daintree - Cape Tribulation Rainforest Tour

This full-day tour for those being picked up in Cairns and the beaches begins with a trip along the scenic coastal Great Barrier Reef Drive to Port Douglas. The road hugs the mountain side, and we stop at Rex Lookout to enjoy stunning views of the Coral Sea. From here, we continue to Port Douglas, picking up any extra guests and stopping at Flagstaff Hill, which overlooks the famous 4 Mile Beach.

The next stop is Mossman Gorge, where we refresh with local tea, coffee or a cold drink, before exploring this secluded gorge and rainforest paradise. The cool, clear waters of Mossman River tumble through and over giant granite boulders. We’ll take a guided walk, and you have the opportunity for a swim, should you wish to do so.

We then continue north to the Daintree Tea House and enjoy a quality restaurant lunch, with a choice of meals available, before stepping aboard a solar-powered electric boat to take a 1-hour cruise on the Daintree River. Keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles and other local wildlife.

Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef, and you can take it all in from the Kulki Lookout. However due to road closures & repairs we are only able to travel as far as Thornton Beach which is approx 13 km south of Cape Tribulation Beach. This is the most northern point of our day tour adventure, so from here, we begin the journey home, but not before a quick stop at the Daintree Ice-Cream Company, where you can purchase locally made tropical ice cream (at your own expense)

Adult $249|Child $199 4-14yrs| Family 2A2C $849 Departs Daily 7.00am

The Daintree Rainforest

rainforest tours cairns

The Daintree Rainforest is a place like no other, boasting a rich history stretching back millions of years. It is the oldest intact tropical lowland rainforest in the world, and its biodiversity is unmatched - with the greatest diversity of plants and animals found anywhere in Australia. This spectacular rainforest region is home to 13 of the world’s 19 primitive flowering plant species and hosts 28% of frogs, 65% of ferns, 40% of birds and 34% of mammals in Australia. Little wonder that Sir David Attenborough calls it the most spectacular and diverse rainforest region on earth!

The landscape is simply breathtaking, with magnificent mountain ranges, fast flowing streams and waterfalls, deep gorges and dense rainforest. And the coastal scenery is no less stunning - with the Daintree offering the rare combination of tropical rainforest, white sandy beaches and fringing reefs just offshore. It's no wonder that this region has been dubbed a 'living museum'.

The Daintree Rainforest is easily accessible - located just a 2-hour drive north of Cairns and Port Douglas. As you journey from Cairns to Mossman along the Cook Highway, you'll be treated to some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Australia - from secluded palm-fringed tropical beaches to hidden coves, rugged headlands, lush sugar-cane fields and rainforest-covered mountains.

Daintree Rainforest Tours from Cairns We offer a range of tours to the Daintree Rainforest from Cairns, depending on the type of adventure you're after. Our tours include air-conditioned coach rides, hiking tours, wildlife cruises, and four-wheel drive excursions. Some tours even give visitors a chance to view crocodiles up close in their natural environment, and to taste the natural fruits that grow in the rainforest.

Cape Tribulation

Cape Tribulation

The Cape Tribulation section of Daintree National Park is renowned as the place where where two spectacular World Heritage sites meet - the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Stretching from Cow Bay to the Bloomfield River, Cape Tribulation itself is a headland that juts out into the Coral Sea. The Kulki Boardwalk is a short 400m walk up the headland with great views of the mountain backdrop and Cape Tribultion Beach. A beautiful long beach walk links Myall Beach and Cape Tribulation Beach. The view from the southern side of the Cape is spectacular. The fringing reef at Coconut Beach is a great place to explore at low tide. Thornton Beach is also a great place to walk and experience ‘where the rainforest meets the reef’.

Cape Tribulation has so many activities on offer including bush walking, kayaking, horse riding treks, snorkelling, exotic fruit tastings, zip lining through the rainforest canopy and 4WD safaris. There are also many walks taking in the beaches and rainforest. Cape Tribulation is where the bitumen ends and a Four Wheel Drive is needed to venture further north.

Mossman Gorge

Mossman Gorge

Mossman is the gateway to the southern section of the Daintree National Park which incorporates Mossman Gorge, one of the most beautiful and accessible tourist sites in the Port Douglas region. Mossman Gorge lies 20km north of Port Douglas and approx 2km from the township of Mossman.

This area of National Park is part of the traditional homeland of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people. For the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people many natural features of the landscape have spiritual significance including Wundu (Thornton Peak), Manjal Dimbi (Mount Demi), Wurrumbu (The Bluff) and Kulki (Cape Tribulation). Mossman Gorge is of particular significance to their culture with its water, mountains and rainforest holding many indigenous stories handed down through each generation of elders.

Mossman Gorge remains mostly untouched and in pristine condition with crystal-clear waters that cascade over granite boulders, dense rainforest canopy and more than 100 species of trees, shrubs and vines with the fig trees and their flying buttresses being one of the most popular attractions. A suspension bridge runs across Rex Creek close to where it enters the Mossman River, linking a 2.4-kilometre circular rainforest walk.

A "must do" for every visitor to Mossman Gorge are the indigenous guided Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks, conducted by the traditional owners of the Gorge, the Kuku Yalanji people. (Nar-di-gul) meaning stories and legends from a long time ago, takes visitors on a journey along private, easy graded tracks, visiting special places and culturally significant sites and over rainforest streams.

Daintree River Cruises

Daintree River Cruises

A Daintree River cruise provides superb wildlife viewing opportunities. An average of 40 birds and animals are seen on each tour including crocodiles, snakes, and rare birds. Cruises are provided in a small vessel which enables an intimate exploration of the river banks and wildlife in the trees and sky above. There are a number of river cruise operators who depart from various locations along the banks of the Daintree River, there is also one exclusive operator that departs in the Cape Tribulation section of Daintree National Park, and travels from the mouth of Cooper Creek towards Thornton Peak.

Daintree River Ferry

Daintree River Ferry

The north and south banks of the Daintree River are linked by the Daintree Ferry. The Daintree ferry is the only cable ferry operating within tropical Australia. It makes continuous crossings of the Daintree River throughout the day, which takes about 5 minutes to cross the river. A fee is payable to use the ferry service prior to boarding. The ferry operates 6.00am until midnight every day with a reduced service on Christmas Day. After crossing the Daintree Ferry you will travel through lowland and tropical rainforest passing road junctions for Cape Kimberley and Cow Bay.

Daintree Rainforest Walks

Daintree Rainforest Walks

There are plenty of walks in the Daintree - Cape Tribulation area where you can submerge yourself in rainforest. No matter your level of fitness or mobility, young or old, experienced hikers or casual strollers, there are walks to accommodate all. Simple walks include Kulki - Cape Tribulation Beach Lookout (10mins), Marrdja Botanical Walk (45 mins), Jindalba boardwalk (45 mins) and Dubuji Boardwalk (45mins), or for the more experienced hikers Jindalba circuit track (1.5 hrs), Emmagen Creek & Beach (5 hours) and Mt Sorrow Ridge Walk (6 hours).

Jindalba boardwalk—650 m return (45 mins) Grade: easy The Jindalba (meaning ‘foot of the mountain’) boardwalk explores tropical lowland rainforest. Quiet walkers may be lucky enough to see a tree-kangaroo or cassowary. There is a large picnic area with toilets and tables. Wheelchair access to the creek is from the exit end only, near the disability access parking bays.

Jindalba circuit track—3 km return (1.5 hrs) Grade: moderate Near the entrance of the Jindalba boardwalk is the start of the Jindalba circuit track. This forest walk is well marked but is stony in places and crosses rainforest creeks. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Marrja boardwalk—1.2 km loop (45 mins) Grade: easy The Marrja (meaning ‘rainforest’ or ‘jungle’) boardwalk allows visitors to experience both rainforest and mangrove communities, without getting muddy. Along the walk learn about the plants found in each of these environments. There are no toilets or picnic areas at this site.

Dubuji boardwalk—1.2 km loop (45 mins) Grade: easy The Dubuji (meaning ‘place of spirits’) boardwalk travels through lowland rainforest swamps and mangroves. Signs explain the survival strategies used by rainforest plants and animals. The site is close to Myall Beach and has large grassed areas with picnic shelters and toilets.

Kulki—600 m return (10 mins) Grade: easy Kulki day-use area has a boardwalk leading from the picnic area to a viewing platform overlooking the ocean and beach. A short walk from the Kulki car park takes you to beautiful Myall Beach. Toilets and picnic tables are provided.

Mount Sorrow ridge trail—7 km return (6-7 hrs) Grade: difficult This is a steep and difficult trail and walkers need to be fit, self-reliant and well-prepared. The trail climbs from the coastal lowlands of Cape Tribulation, up the rainforest-clad ridge of Mount Sorrow to a lookout offering views of the beautiful Daintree coastline, Snapper Island and beyond.

Guide to the Daintree Rainforest

  • Getting to the Daintree Rainforest
  • When to visit

A forest so spectacular, Sir David Attenborough called it “the most extraordinary place on Earth.”

The creeping vines and emerald canopy of the Daintree Rainforest have been growing for more than 180 million years. That’s right – it’s the world’s oldest tropical rainforest by an impressive 10 million years, so it’s no wonder that visitors can feel the ancient energy with every step. Just as special as the forest itself are the experiences you’ll find within it, from crocodile spotting to spear fishing. Indulge in the healing properties at a luxury spa, float gently down the river on a raft and soak up generations-old knowledge from the area’s traditional custodians, the Kuku Yalanji.

There are two parts to Daintree National Park, home to the Daintree Rainforest: the mountainous Mossman Gorge area and the coastal Cape Tribulation section. Mossman Gorge is around 22 kms (14 mi) from Port Douglas or 77 kms (48 mi) from Cairns, with the Cape Tribulation section a further 40 kms (25 mi) to the north.

  • Cairns Airport (65 kms/40 mi from Mossman Gorge); international and domestic arrivals
  • Hire cars are available at Cairns Airport, Cairns city and Port Douglas
  • Private and group tours to the Daintree Rainforest depart from Cairns and Port Douglas
  • Access to the Cape Tribulation section of the Daintree Rainforest is by car ferry across the Daintree River

The Daintree Rainforest unsurprisingly gets a lot of rain – with some areas experiencing up to 6 m (19 ft) of precipitation in a year. In the wet season, from December to April, you’ll encounter high humidity and frequent rainfall, but you’ll also experience gushing waterfalls and the rainforest at its most lush. The relatively mild and cool dry season, which extends from May to September, is ideal for long hikes in the national park.

  • High season: Late autumn to early spring (May to September)
  • Low season: Summer and early autumn (December to April)
  • Don’t miss: An Aboriginal-guided walk through the rainforest departing from Mossman Gorge Centre at any time of the year

World Heritage Rainforest Tours from Cairns

Choose between our amazing Rainforest tours below and reserve your experience online!

Far North Queensland Wet Tropics Rainforest

Appreciate the tropical rainforests of Far North Queensland in all its glory by getting out amongst it; hike in the forest; swim under the waterfall; wash your worries away in the freshwater swimming holes. Many of these locations are out of cell range, meaning you will be pushed to unplug, unwind, be present in the moment, and enjoy yourself.

The Wet Tropics Rainforest is a World Heritage protected area since 1988, starting North of Townsville and finishing around Cooktown. Approximately 180 million years old, this area includes over 30 different National Parks, as well as conservation parks, State forests and reserves that make up nearly 80% of the almost 900,000 hectares.

Daintree Rainforest and the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland

Many visitors are under the impression that the Daintree National Park is the only World Heritage listed rainforest in FNQ, however the Daintree National Park is a park within the World Heritage Wet Tropics Rainforest. The Wet Tropics first became recognized through Mission Beach – another place where two world heritage areas meet.

  • Chevron down What is the difference between the Daintree Rainforest and the wet tropics?

The Daintree National park is just one National Park within the protected Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of Tropical North Queensland. Other well-known National parks within this Ancient Rainforest worth checking out are places like: Wooroonooran National Park, Kuranda National Park, Crater Lakes National Park, Mt Hypipamee National Park, Dinden National Park, and Tully Gorge National Park.

  • Chevron down Why is the Daintree National Park so much more talked about, or well known then the “Wet Tropics”?

The Daintree Rainforest is the base of many popular tours, accommodation, and experiences. The Daintree Rainforest is also known as the place where the “Reef” meets the “Rainforest” or two World Heritage Areas coming together at Alexandra’s Range Lookout…  With this in mind, tour operators and businesses advertise around the Daintree Rainforest with all its beauties, including the spectacular drive along the coast and through Port Douglas.

  • Chevron down Is the Daintree National Park better than the other National Parks within the Wet Tropics Rainforest?

The short answer is no, it really is about finding the right style for you. It is important to find out your bucket list items and go from there.  The different locations can provide a different rainforest experience, some being more educational and others being more hands-on with more freshwater swimming. If you have the time, you may get to explore more than one National Park. Many visitors are short on time and must weigh up what matters most to them. The 3 most popular routes from Cairn are explained in detail below.

Travelling up North can be completed in one day trip, or if time allows, you can stay for multiple days at one of the remote rainforest retreats or camp sites. If you are planning an overnight trip, be sure to check out the night walking tours to appreciate natures’ night life. Creatures such as possums, Boyd’s Forest Dragon, snakes, frogs, and insects can often be seen in the night.

  • Rex Lookout
  • Alexandra Lookout
  • Mossman Gorge

Atherton Tablelands Waterfall Circut

Just up the hill from Cairns is the Atherton Tablelands, an awe-inspiring region that is 1600 or so meters above sea level. In the Tablelands you can expect a variety of farmland produce, fruits, rainforest, craters, lakes, hiking trails, and waterfalls.

The Tablelands is also home to some of the endemic wildlife species like Tree Kangaroos, Cassowaries, Green Tree Frogs as well as many other cute wildlife like the Platypus. Take a day trip with a local guide to some incredible locations to appreciate the best of what the wet tropics has to offer.

  • Josephine Falls
  • Babinda Boulders
  • Lake Eacham Volcanic
  • Platypus spotting in Yungaburra

Eliminate the Yellow Crazy Ants

As if the world was not crazy enough, yellow crazy ants are trying to invade our wonderful region. These invasive little soldiers can overpower, kill, and their prey which include other ants, insects, lizards, birds, and mammals. The problem is taken quiet seriously as this can have devastating consequences on the environment. The volunteers of the YCA Community task force, in conjunction with YCA Wet Tropics Management Authority and the local Djabuguy Bulmba Rangers, have been monitoring, baiting, and eradicating these crazy ants in the Kuranda region. To see what you can do to help ride the Far North of these pests, visit Kuranda Envirocare here .

Kuranda Envirocare go beyond the YCA in their fight to save the rainforest. They also participate in tree planting, monitoring endemic frog species of the wet tropics, and monitor the bird species in this region.

Save the Cassowary

Descending from dinosaurs, holding both environmental and cultural significance, the Cassowary is a vital part of the survival of the Wet Tropics. From an environmental perspective, the cassowary is viewed as the gardener of the rainforest. As cassowaries are primarily fruit eaters, they digest over 200 species of seeds, which then are distributed over vast areas through their droppings. Yes, that is a nice way of saying that cassowaries help save the rainforest through their poop. There are even some fruit trees that could not survive without this process, as they cannot re-germinate without firstly passing through the stomach of these magnificent birds.

Sadly, the biggest threat to the cassowary are humans, caused by road accidents, domestic animal attacks and the clearing of their environment. With over 80% of the coastal habitat already removed, the effects of natural disasters such as cyclones are that much more devastating. Great organizations like Rainforest Rescue and Wet Tropics Management Authority have started the Save the Cassowary campaign to raise awareness both locally and internationally about this endangered bird. If you would like to know more about how you can get involved, visit Rainforest Rescue here .

Daintree Rainforest Day Trips From Cairns

rainforest tours cairns

A very beauitful and special part of the world, the Daintree is certainly not to be missed. This remote area is situated 111kms north of Cairns and has the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent. Along the coastline north of the Daintree River, the tropical rainforest grows right down to the edge of the sea where fringing reef is met on the shoreline, this is commonly referred to as 'where the Rainforest meets the Reef'.`

Getting there is all part of the adventure. The journey to the Daintree travels along the Cook Highway north of Port Douglas and features beautiful scenery ranging from secluded palm fringed tropical beaches, hidden coves and rugged headlands to the rich green of lush sugar-cane fields and rainforest covered mountains.

The Daintree River ferry is the gateway to the Daintree Coast and Cape Tribulation, and is the only cable ferry operating within tropical Australia. Once over the river there are many natural attractions to visit including rainforest walks, freshwater swimming holes and remote beaches.

There are also plenty of adventure activities that take place such as sea kayaking, horse riding, jungle surfing, snorkelling, night walks and more. Guided tours depart daily from Cairns.

5 spectacular places to visit near Cairns

Lava tubes, ancient forests, and beach retreats..

Ulrike Lemmin-Woolfrey

When I wrote a travel guidebook for the Great Barrier Reef and coastal Queensland , the northern half of the Australian state was nearly unchartered territory for me. But after flying into Cairns from Melbourne and taking several weeks-long solo road trips around the region, it pulled me in with its sheer variety of landscapes and adventures.

Queensland simply has it all: the Great Barrier Reef, which offers thousands of picture-perfect islands and some of the world’s best scuba diving and sailing; the world’s oldest rainforest in Daintree National Park ; the great Outback; and even a volcanic national park . And all of these can be reached easily in day trips from the bustling city of Cairns, whether you drive yourself or hop on a guided tour.

Discover the world’s oldest forest

The Daintree River

There are forests and then there are forests like Daintree . A UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s the oldest forest in the world, dating back a whopping 180 million years. The dense forest starts after crossing the crocodile-riddled Daintree River on a small public ferry and offers numerous walking trails allowing visitors to get deep into the forest without disturbing the unique ecosystem.

Start at the Daintree Discovery Center to get an overview of the forest’s ancient plants and the animals you might spot (look out for tree kangaroos!). There's a great canopy walk on suspended paths, and signage offering information about this unique habitat. You can also get advice from the center’s rangers on what to do in the region—and what not to, such as relaxing on the picture-perfect white beaches, which tend to be the territory of the rather tetchy and seriously dangerous saltwater crocodiles.

Where to stay: To truly get a feel for this place, stay in an eco-lodge in the heart of the forest. I love the Silky Oaks Lodge , which combines nature with a bit of luxury in a fabulous setting right by a gurgling—and crocodile-free—stream.

Go artsy in Kuranda

Koala bear at the Kuranda Koala Gardens

In the Blue Mountains just north of Cairns, Kuranda is what remains of a 1960s art colony. Its artsy vibe has stuck around, with several art galleries, art stalls, and public installations sprinkled across town. The Butterfly Sanctuary and Koala Gardens are also major draws. Stop for lunch at La Fonda for empanadas and tacos, or souvenir shopping at the colorful markets. Just know that by mid-afternoon, the village pretty much shuts down, with the attractions, markets and cafes closing around 4 p.m..

Tip: Getting between Cairns and Kuranda is its own experience, with the Skyrail Cableway taking you high above the canopy of the forest with two stops along the way for a short jungle walk and to see the Barron Falls . On the way back, take the Kuranda Scenic Railway , a beautifully restored railway that chugs through the mountains’ stupendous scenery. Upgrade to Gold Class to enjoy a glass of wine and locally produced nibbles en route.

Head underground at Undara Volcanic Park

Being surrounded by the petrified lava tubes in the Undara volcanic national park.

Until I entered one in Undara, I had never even heard of a lava tube. An easy 3.5-hour drive through the scenic Atherton Tablelands from Cairns, Undara Volcanic National Park boasts the world’s largest and best-preserved lava tube system—tunnels that formed when lava flow cooled and hardened on the outside but kept flowing on the inside—and is where Australia experienced its last volcanic eruption more than 190,000 years ago. Add plenty of native animals like bats and kangaroos, plus a great line-up of guided nature talks and walks near the edge of naturally-formed craters, and you have a perfect day trip that is even better when turned into a two-day trip.

Where to stay: There is so much to see and do here that an overnight stay is a good idea, especially as the bush breakfast is great fun. Within the park you can camp at Undara Resorts , but my personal favorite accommodation are the old railway carriages that have been repurposed as basic but comfortable rooms.

Spot a cassowary at Mission Beach

Lush green Paronella Park with castle in the background.

Roughly 1.5-hours’ drive south of Cairns, laid-back Mission Beach is full of beachside bars and restaurants and lovely boutique clothing and home décor stores. It’s perfect for a good beach escape with the added bonus of potentially spotting a cassowary along the way.

The region is famous as one of the few enclaves where you can find these gigantic, flightless birds that roam the forests. Driving slowly and keeping an eye out for them crossing the road ahead of you often pays off, as in my case when a father and chick crossed right in front of my car. But beware that they can be grumpy, particularly during the breeding season, and should not be approached.

Don’t miss: On the way back up to Cairns, stop at Paronella Park , a castle set in magical gardens. All built by one man for the love of his life in the 1930s, this quirky, dreamlike garden is complete with waterfalls, secret places, follies, and yes, a castle.

Have an island getaway to Fitzroy Island

Beautiful secluded beach on Fitzroy island.

Cairns doesn’t have any city beaches, although there are plenty just outside of city limits. But a great way to spend a beach day nearby is to hop on the ferry at Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal for an easy 45-minute ride to Fitzroy Island .

On the island you’ll have your pick of blindingly white beaches, great snorkeling and scuba diving spots, and glass-bottom boat tours. There are restaurants and bars, plus the center of the island is overgrown with forests, allowing for some great hikes leading up to its highest point where you’ll find beautiful views.

Where to stay: A day trip gives you plenty of time to really enjoy the island, but you can book a night at the Fitzroy Island Resort if you want to wake up on the island and have a swim before breakfast.
