Managing to forge a music career after a life-threatening bicycle accident, Melody Gardot (born February 2nd, 1985) has found critical success with her jazz-infused pop, finding comparisons with Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy.

Born and raised in New Jersey, US, Melody Gardot took to music from an early age, eventually becoming a regular performer in Philadelphia, US nightclubs, during her time studying as a fashion student at the Community College of Philadelphia. Gardot's life was turned upside down, after suffering a bicycle accident that left Gardot fighting for her live, eventually spending several months recovering from multiple head injuries and pelvic fractures.

Whilst in recovery, music was to be the therapy that Gardot needed, helping combat her amnesia and find her past musical talents once again. The accident left her with hypersensitivity to both sound and light, which meant she could only listen to soft, gentle music, influencing her own direction. Whilst in her hospital bed, she taught herself guitar and began to write the songs which would eventually become her debut EP, "Some Lessons," released in 2005.

Having improved dramatically over the year, Gardot decided to pursue a career in music after recovering, with her debut EP being followed by her independently recorded full-length, "Worrisome Heart." The album caught the attention of Verve, who reissued the record in 2007. Her extremely personal music has found widespread praise for her emotive, gentle blues. Her personal story makes her rise to success even more impressive, releasing two further albums, 2009's "My One and Only Thrill" and 2012's "The Absence." Her records have consistently found international chart success, managing to top the charts in Norway and Sweden.

Live reviews

With a name like that, she was surely born to sing, although there’s plenty more to Melody Gardot than meets the eye; she hails from Philadelphia, but considers herself a “citizen of the world”, and despite being just twenty-nine years of age, she’s already made a major impression in the jazz world, a genre often seen as inaccessible for people of the younger generation. It helps, of course, that Gardot writes all of her own material, but it’s also true that there’s touches of the Latin influence to her sound. She’s been nominated for Grammys and seen her records go platinum in parts of Europe, but she’s not all about recording; she’s also a committed advocate of music therapy, dedicating a sizable amount of her time to helping others through sound. As a touring artist, she’s stuck reasonably close to jazz convention at her own shows; with her extensive live band, she can deliver career-spanning sets that delve into every aspect of her music - as well as the typical guitar and drums setup, she brings a brass section, including a saxophonist, on the road with her too. She’s just completed an extensive European jaunt, which kicked off with a performance at London’s Barbican Hall and included a stop in Brighton further down the line; she’s seldom away from the territory in which she’s met with the most success, however.

Melody Gardot in the Noches Del Botanico in Madrid: an open air show on a hot summer night and amazing music from one of my favourite singers. Melody is a natural performer, reaching to her audience with her songs and little stories once in a while and with her outstanding band (featuring young sax player Irwin Hall), she can do whatever she wants … slow and quiet as in the beautiful and touching Baby I’m A Fool or powerful and engaging as in Preacher Man or She Don’t Know from her latest CD Currency Of Man. She is an artist who can touch me deeply, as she did with her incredible rendition of Morning Sun from the same album and a simple, but extremely powerful See-Line Woman, the iconic song by Nina Simone, which she made completely her own in a version full of respect for the original, but still being able to add something special to it. The Madrid audience was fully behind her and sang with her creating some extremely beautiful moments. Melody Gardot and her band were in great form last night and delivered what easily could be the concert of the year for me. Sensational!!!

Philadelphian Melody Gardot may only be thirty years old yet she has already made quite an impression on the jazz scene with her impeccable musical talent and honest songwriting voice. There is a wonderfully personable, warm mentality to Melody's stage demeanour and she clearly enjoys the company of her accompanying musicians as they involve each other during earthy, acoustic instrumentals.

There is an assumed manner about the singer, she simply seems grateful to have the opportunity to stand onstage and share her music with the attentive audiences. She is constantly thanking them for the huge applause the likes of 'The Rain' and 'So We Meet Again My Heartache' receive. You would never believe this lady is so esteemed in the music world, having been nominated for numerous Grammy awards. A note perfect rendition of 'Baby I'm a Fool' makes the audience understand as to why many have compared Melody's music to Nina Simone. There is a rich, natural tone to her vocal and an organic humanistic approach to the way in which she makes music.

It was a fantastic evening with smooth jazzy soul-funky music. Melody Gardot was surrounded 360 degrees by audiences in the DR- concert hall, and she managed to take us all in and have a dialogue with us. The elegant way she masters both singing within a wide range of tonality and volume/intensity and also both playing the guitar and piano so skillfully is absolutely amazing and a gift to experience. She and her 7 man band received an immediate standing ovation from a sold out concert hall. I walked out into the night feeling somewhat changed in mind and heart. My sense of connection with the friend that I brought to the concert had somewhat deepened. And on top of frightening terrorist acts in Paris the week before, this gave us love and hope and a sense of connectedness in our hearts. Music is powerful

A bit much noise of sound and whispering. lack of really singing and playing the songs as strong as there are on cd.

It was a bit disappointing as a show. I drifted away from concentration too often. Sometimes Melody sang beautifully concentrated in the ballads like 'Our love is easy" and " Baby, i'm a fool " My personal highlights.

Overall she did not make much of an impression to me with her new poppy and loud screaming sound, although the instrumentalists were great sometimes trumpet, sax, guitar etc).

She talks a lot but is hard to actually hear what she is mumbling. Im a die hard fan from her first album till the fourth, which are all very good albums This is my third concert and it wasn't the best. Might not go anymore for a next gig.

It was the coolest grooviest Jazz concert that I have ever been to. Her voice moves you and her band fill out the room with their melodies.

I will definitely go to her concert again next time that she is in town.

melody gardot tour 2022

Blessed with a beautiful alto voice and grand insight as a songwriter, Melody Gardot overcame a life-threatening bicycle accident early in her career. As amazing as her story is, what is more evident is that she possesses a blues, jazz-oriented style and dusky persona that reflect not only her afflictions but also conversely the hope and joy of making personalized music that marks her as an original.

At age 19, she was hit by a Jeep made an illegal turn, and left in the street for dead. As she lay hospitalized for months with multiple head injuries and pelvic fractures, her love for music was the best therapy she could receive.  While in her hospital bed, she wrote and recorded songs that would become the EP Some Lessons.

Upon her eventual release from intensive care, Gardot found the strength and determination to further her career.  Hypersensitive to light and noise, she wore dark glasses. On-stage she also required a special seating unit, and often wore a Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator to assist in alleviating her neuralgic muscle pain.  Despite these hurdles, she recorded her debut full-length, Worrisome Heart , in 2007. Well-received, the album drew comparisons to Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, and Eva Cassidy.

In 2021, Melody joined forces with Philippe Powell, composer-pianist and son of Baden Powell, to write a record. He’s like “The Bill Evans of Brazil,” Melody would screech to her colleagues, “… he’s just got that thing that goes so deep…”.  This led to the May 20, 2022 release of Entre eux deux . Melody Gardot and Philippe Powell breathe a new life into the classic piano and voice format with their fresh perspectives.

September 19, 2022

The story of vocalist, guitarist, and pianist Melody Gardot is remarkable; she's persevered against abject adversity throughout her life. Blessed with a beautiful alto voice and grand insight as a songwriter, Gardot overcame a life-threatening bicycle accident early in her career. As amazing as her story is, what is more evident is that she possesses a blue, jazz-oriented style and dusky persona that reflect not only her afflictions, but conversely the hope and joy of making personalized music that marks her as an original.

Born in New Jersey in 1985, she took up piano and played as a youngster on the nightclub scene of Philadelphia, influenced by jazz, folk, rock, and pop music. At age 19 she was a fashion student at the Community College of Philadelphia. But, on a fateful day, while riding her bicycle, the driver of a Jeep made an illegal turn, hurtling into Gardot and leaving her in the street for dead.

On-stage she also required a special seating unit, and often wore a Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator, a TENS device, to assist in alleviating her neuralgic muscle pain. Despite these hurdles, she recorded her debut full-length, Worrisome Heart, which was reissued in 2007 by the Verve label. Well-received, the album drew comparisons to Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, and Eva Cassidy.

In 2009, working with producer Larry Klein and arranger Vince Mendoza -- both known for their work with Joni Mitchell -- Gardot followed up her Verve debut with My One and Only Thrill. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard U.S. Jazz Albums chart. She returned in 2012 with her third studio album, The Absence, featuring production from guitarist/composer Heitor Pereira. The effort continued her upward trajectory, landing in the Top 30 on the Billboard 200 and reaching the top of the U.S. Jazz Albums chart.

Gardot altered her musical direction when she returned to the recording studio. She reteamed with Klein and focused on music strongly influenced by R&B, blues, and jazz in a set of original, socially conscious songs. Her first single/video, "Preacherman", was inspired by the death of Emmett Till. The second, "It Gonna Come", was released as a docu-video a week prior to the album. The full-length Currency of Man was released by Decca in June of 2015. In 2018, she delivered her first full- length concert album, Live in Europe. Recorded at a series of shows between 2012 and 2016, the album showcased Gardot backed by her adept touring ensemble.

In 2020, she again paired with Klein for ‘Sunset in the Blue’, which featured an all-star cast of studio contributors including Till Bronner, Antonio Zambujo, arranger Vince Mendoza and engineer Al Schmitt. The first single from the album titled “From Paris With Love” featured a ‘Global Orchestra’ of musicians. Hand assembled by Gardot from over 30 different countries and recorded in isolation during the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the track was released with an accompanying video piece in order to raise charity money in support of health-care workers and public awareness for those struggling in the arts. ‘Sunset in the Blue’ was released on October 23 rd to critical acclaim as yet another benchmark record in the tradition of Jazz music.

On August 22 2021, Philippe Powell, composer pianist and son of Baden Powell, came to Melody's studio in Paris to stay for two weeks. Their mission: write a record. Now she had heard Philippe before, and since that first crossing, many years ago, she was blown away by his talent. Hearing his compositions and observing the way he played she knew he had something. He’s like “The Bill Evans of Brazil”, Melody would screech to her colleagues, “... he’s just got that thing that goes so deep...”. This led to the May 20, 2022 release of Entre eux deux.

Melody Gardot and Philippe Powell breathe a new life into the classic piano and voice format with their fresh perspectives. Recorded in Paris, the album features 'This Foolish Heart Could Love You' and 'A La Tour Eiffel', and so much more. Sensual, romantic and intimate, 'This Foolish Heart Could Love You' is a love song reminiscent of a great jazz standard. Written by Gardot and Powell, the song arrives alongside an iconic video, produced by 247 Productions and directed by Beki Mari, who has previously worked with the likes of Rita Ora, Glass Animals, Sigrid, Paloma Faith and Sting. The video showcases the dancer étoile, Marie Agnes Gillot and her partner dancer étoile, Germain Louvet, interpreting this feeling of a feeling moment that just may escape one's grasp, while paying hommage to Auguste Rodin's love of dancers at the iconic Musée Rodin in Paris.

Live Nation Presents

Melody gardot, feat. philippe powell live 2022.

Array

Pause

Melody Gardot, musician

Channelling hushed, blue jazz, Melody Gardot captures love and loss with her tender vocals.

The singer has drawn comparisons to Laura Nyro, Nina Simone and Eva Cassidy.

In 2020, she worked with award-winning producer, Larry Klein (known for his work with Joni Mitchell) for Sunset in the Blue , which featured an all-star cast of studio contributors including Till Brönner, António Zambujo and arranger Vince Mendoza.

Sunset in the Blue showcases Gardot’s grand insight as an original songwriter and her beautiful alto voice. This is her first performance of the album in Lo.

Developing a career in music after a life-threatening bicycle accident, Gardot reached critical acclaim following the release of her debut album, Worrisome Heart , which was reissued in 2007 by the Verve label.

Recognised by Radio Canada's Ici Musique as one of the top five female jazz musicians to watch, Toronto-based French/American jazz singer Laura Anglade is making a name for herself in the jazz world.

Her debut release, I've Got Just About Everything , saw the vocalist and composer, along with her quintet, fearlessly plunging into a range of top-notch material, drawn from both the Broadway stage as well as the Great American Songbook.

Melody Gardot

Sat 19 November 2022

Stage time / 7:30pm

Doors / 7:00pm

Developing a career in music after a life-threatening bicycle accident, the American songstress has drawn comparisons to Laura Nyro, Nina Simone and Eva Cassidy.

Melody Gardot reached critical acclaim following the release of her debut album ‘Worrisome Heart’, which was reissued in 2007 by the Verve label.  In 2020, she worked with award winning producer, Larry Klein (known for his work with Joni Mitchell) for ‘Sunset in the Blue’, which featured an all-star cast of studio contributors including Till Bronner, Antonio Zambujo and arranger Vince Mendoza.

'Sunset in the Blue’ is yet another benchmark record in the tradition of jazz music, showcasing Gardot’s grand insight as an original songwriter and her beautiful alto voice. She will be performing this album for the first time in London, for the Festival audiences.

Support for Melody Gardot comes from Toronto-based French/American Jazz singer Laura Anglade.  Making a name for herself in the jazz world, Laura’s singing is reminiscent of many of the great vocal stylists of the 20th century including Anita O’Day, Shirley Horn, and Blossom Dearie, but her voice is uniquely her own. She digs emotionally and eloquently into a standard, her story-telling abilities portray a soul beyond her years.

The EFG Elements Series returns with 4 shows hand-picked in collaboration with our title sponsors, EFG, representing the richness and diversity of the Festival. The series reinforces our shared commitment to the next generation of emerging talent as well as the creation of new music.

Jazz FM’s Nigel Williams says: 'Melody Gardot performs her Sunset in the Blue album in the UK for the first time. The album that got me through Lockdown! Especially the line from ‘From Paris with Love,’ they fall in love like falling out of bed!'

That astonishing voice had a way of flaring into a sultry rasp, blending sexiness, defiance and vulnerability that evoked French singers of old ★★★★ Telegraph
When you rouse yourself from Gardot’s dream, it can be hard to recall any individual song, but the reverie is beautiful. ★★★★ The Telegraph

From our sponsors, the EFG Elements Series will reveal a range of handpicked shows from EFG.

American singer, songwriter and composer Melody Gardot returns in 2022 for two exceptional concerts on the legendary Olympia stage, which is sold out every time she performs. This success is also reflected in her tours of France, making her an artist not to be missed.

In 2020, she unveiled “Sunset in the Blue”, her fifth studio album. Released on October 23, the platinum-selling album reunites Melody Gardot with her “My One and Only Thrill” team: producer Larry Klein, arranger and composer Vince Mendoza and legendary sound engineer Al Schmitt.

This year, Melody is inviting prestigious guests such as Ibrahim Maalouf and Antonio Zambujo on the re-release of her album, once more on the theme of love.

Melody Gardot will be in Lyon on November 11th at the Centre des Congrès and on stage at the Olympia in Paris for five exceptional concerts on November 21, 22 and 23 and on December 3, 2022.

In view of this success, she is adding an extra concert on December 5 at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
