International hunting mongolia.

Hunt in Mongolia for Altai, Hangai and Gobi Argali and Ibex. The tradition of hunting in Mongolia goes back over eight centuries to the time of Genghis Khan.

  • International Hunting

Landlocked between Russia and China, Mongolia is a country of unlimited hunting possibilities. High mountains, endless steppes, arid deserts and crystal clear lakes are all part of the Mongolia you will enjoy.

Our outfitter has led safaris and outdoor expeditions throughout Mongolia for over 50 years. As one of the largest hunting operations in Asia, they maintain their own camps in the best hunting areas. Their guides and interpreters are well trained and will accompany and assist you throughout your hunt.

Altai Argali (Ovis Ammon Ammon) is the largest sheep in the world, and is the ram that dreams are made of when it comes to the Asian argali. There are still decent populations of Altai argali to hunt but the hunts are not as easy as they once were. A true sheep hunter who will exercise a little patience, and be mentally tough and prepared for this hunt can still come away with an outstanding Altay argali.

Hangai Argali - This outstanding ram was formerly called a mid-Altay argali. It is generally bigger than a Gobi, but smaller than the Altai. This sheep is located in the Hangai Mountains of central Mongolia.

Gobi Argali - A true Gobi argali is an outstanding trophy. They are found in the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia. The Gobi Argali is smaller than the Altai however the largest recorded Gobi horns measured 62 inches.

Altai Ibex are found in the Altai Mountains in western Mongolia. The horns of the largest specimen to date measured 53 inches.

Gobi Ibex are found in the famous Gobi Desert. The hunt is in a special area with large concentrations of animals, with success rates approaching 100%. White Gazelles are also found in the same area.

Exploring Mongolia's Hunting Landscape

A picture of a hunter in Mongolia, exploring the unlimited hunting possibilities

Mongolia offers unlimited hunting possibilities, with a diverse landscape that ranges from the majestic Altai Mountains and the mysterious Gobi Desert to the lush Hangai Mountains. Each region offers unique hunting and fishing experiences, providing opportunities to pursue:

  • the elusive Altai Argali
  • many more game species

So, prepare your gear, and we’ll survey the hunting area that transforms Mongolia into a much-desired destination for hunters everywhere!

Altai Mountains

The Altai Mountains, located in Western Mongolia, are home to some of the most sought-after game species, including the majestic Altai Argali and the elusive Altai Ibex. The region’s diverse landscape, with its rugged peaks, endless steppes, and crystal-clear lakes, provides a breathtaking backdrop for unforgettable hunting adventures.

Regulated to maintain sustainable hunting practices, the Altai Mountains have limited hunting quotas and defined hunting seasons. Early planning for your Altai Argali or Altai Ibex hunt is therefore necessary. Embarking on an Altai Argali hunt or participating in argali hunts in these majestic mountains offers the thrill of pursuing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, an experience you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

Gobi Desert

The vast and unspoiled Gobi Desert offers a unique and challenging hunting experience for the adventurous hunter. This arid region is home to the Gobi Argali and other game species, such as marmots. Hunting in the Gobi Desert requires a combination of skill, patience, and determination, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

The hunting season for Gobi Argali typically runs from August to November, while marmots are usually hunted from May to August. Navigating the desert’s dry rocky mountains and valleys while pursuing these elusive animals on a gobi argali hunt is an exhilarating experience that few can claim to have conquered.

Hangai Mountains

The Hangai Mountains, located in western-central Mongolia, offer a diverse hunting experience, with abundant wildlife such as deer, mountain goats, and wolves. This beautiful region provides a stark contrast to the arid Gobi Desert and the towering Altai Mountains, with its lush landscapes and rich biodiversity.

The best time of year to hunt in the Hangai Mountains is between July and September. As you venture into this enchanting region, you’ll be captivated by its breathtaking beauty and the exciting hunting opportunities it offers, making it an unforgettable part of your Mongolian hunting adventure.

Essential Preparation for Your Mongolian Hunt

An image of a hunter with a rifle and binoculars, preparing for hunting in Mongolia

Being well-prepared is a prerequisite for your Mongolian hunting journey. From obtaining hunting permissions and making travel arrangements to packing the right gear, every detail counts when planning your ultimate hunting experience.

We’ll examine the vital steps needed for a successful and unforgettable hunt in Mongolia.

Obtaining Hunting Permissions

Securing permission to hunt in Mongolia is a requirement. The Mongolian Ministry of Nature and Environment must provide this permission. For highly sought-after species like the Altai Argali, the annual number of licenses is limited, making advance planning crucial. Working with a trustworthy outfitter or hunting agency in Mongolia to help with the licensing process is necessary.

Keep in mind that obtaining a hunting license for Altai Argali can take two to three years of advance planning. Working with experienced professionals will ensure a smooth process and help you navigate the necessary regulations and requirements for a successful hunt.

Travel Arrangements

Booking flights through Seoul or Beijing is suggested when arranging your travel to Mongolia. As a U.S. citizen visiting Mongolia for leisure purposes, you won’t need to obtain a visa prior to arrival, but you will need transit visas for China and possibly Russia. Also, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your hunting dates. In 2024 MIAT Mongolian Airlines will commence direct flights from San Francisco to Ulaanbaatar.

In addition to international flights, plan for domestic transportation to your hunting camp. Quality 4x4 vehicles are used for land transportation within Mongolia, ensuring a comfortable and efficient journey to your hunting destination.

Packing for the Hunt

Preparing for the diverse weather conditions you’ll encounter is key when packing for your Mongolian hunt. Warm attire is highly recommended, as temperatures can drop significantly during hunting season. The best materials for cold weather hunting clothes include:

  • Merino wool
  • Polypropylene
  • Windstopper polyester

Along with warm clothing, sturdy hiking boots are essential for traversing Mongolia’s diverse terrain. Don’t forget to pack essential gear like binoculars, a spotting scope, and any necessary paperwork for your firearms. With the right equipment and preparation, you’ll be ready for an unforgettable hunting experience in Mongolia.

Hunting Techniques and Strategies in Mongolia

mongolia hunting trip

Familiarizing yourself with local hunting techniques and strategies is key to maximizing your success while hunting in Mongolia. The spot and stalk method is a popular approach, offering an exciting and challenging hunting experience. Additionally, working with local guides who have extensive knowledge of the terrain, wildlife, and hunting regulations is invaluable.

We’ll examine these vital elements that contribute to a successful Mongolian hunt.

Spot and Stalk Method

The spot and stalk method is a popular hunting technique in Mongolia, particularly for pursuing the elusive Altai Wapiti elk. This method involves locating game from a distance (spotting) and then approaching it on foot (stalking) for a close-range shot. The spot and stalk method demands a mix of skills, incorporating long-range shooting, stealth, and knowledge of the animal’s behavior and habitat.

Shots can range anywhere from 100-300 yards while hunting in Mongolia, so it’s essential to be prepared for various shooting scenarios. The excitement of stalking your target animal and making a successful shot is an adrenaline rush that you won’t soon forget.

Working with Local Guides

Collaborating with local guides in Mongolia has multiple benefits, including:

  • Delivering genuine local experiences
  • Guaranteeing a safe and rich hunting experience
  • Local guides are familiar with the terrain, wildlife, and landmarks, making them invaluable assets to your hunting adventure
  • They can bridge the language barrier and facilitate communication with locals, providing a deeper understanding of the culture and traditions of the region.

In addition to their knowledge and expertise, local guides play a crucial role in understanding and following hunting regulations. They help hunters navigate the hunting areas and provide guidance on responsible hunting practices to protect the environment and wildlife. By working with local guides, you’re not only ensuring a successful hunt but also contributing to the local economy and supporting sustainable tourism.

Outfitter Options and Hunting Packages

Given the variety of outfitter options and hunting packages available in Mongolia, finding one that fits your needs and preferences is necessary. From all-inclusive packages that cover transportation, accommodations, and trophy care to more customizable options, there’s something to suit every hunter’s taste.

When comparing outfitter options and hunting packages, consider factors such as the services provided, accommodations, and fees. Some outfitters, like Ameri-Cana Expeditions, offer packages that include land transportation, accommodations at hunting camps, meals, local guides, and field care of trophies. By carefully reviewing your options, you can find the ideal hunting experience that caters to your preferences and budget.

High Altai Argali Sheep

Mongolia provides the core habitat for Argali Sheep, possessing the highest body weight and largest horns of any wild sheep. Both the Altai and Gobi Desert species are found in Mongolia, and SCI and other conservation organizations recognize the Mid-Altai (Hangai) Argali as a separate record book entry. Argali are found at altitudes between 7,500-16,000 feet. The hunt is relatively easy physically for Gobi and Altai Argali, which are found at lower elevations. We at Jack Atcheson and Sons have been dealing directly with this outfitter and sending hunters there since 1969.

The camps are traditional Asian ger or yurts. They are warm, clean and comfortable with separate areas for dining, bathing and sleeping. Every camp has a cook and interpreter, with very good food and quality service. Electricity is supplied by generators.

The tradition of hunting in Mongolia goes back over eight centuries, to the time when Genghis Khan ruled the largest empire on earth. The tradition has changed very little over those hundreds of years. It is a land of nomadic horsemen, an ancient culture, unspoiled wilderness, and above all, friendly people. The tradition of welcoming the traveler has been an essential element of their heritage for as long as Mongolia has existed.

Landlocked between Russia and China, Mongolia is a country of unlimited hunting possibilities. In contrast to the crowded Asian countries, Mongolia is home to only 3 million people, with a density of only 3.6 people per square mile. High mountains, endless steppes, arid deserts, and crystal-clear lakes are all part of the Mongolia you will enjoy. The hunting and fishing experiences are as varied as the species you will encounter. We invite you to discover the land of Genghis Khan, and some of the finest hunting on Earth today.

Testimonials:

“One of the best arranged and conducted hunts that I have ever experienced…the arrangements were flawless. No delays were encountered and the assigned personnel were very competent. My guide and interpreter did an outstanding job and was an excellent judge of trophy quality. The attention he paid to detail was excellent.” —R.M., New York

“Altai hunt was fantastic! Great local guide and interpreter. Good accommodations and food. Hunted three days and saw 60 to 70 ibex a day. Ibex taken was 45.5″ on both sides. Very happy with the trophy and the trip. Local guide was very good at judging size of animals and made sure I got what I wanted.” —G.L., Hawaii

“My wife and I would rank our visit to Mongolia as one of the most enjoyable, memorable trips we’ve ever taken. Great hunting and the friendliest people we’ve encountered anywhere in the world. We felt genuinely comfortable and welcome from the moment we arrived. It is a part of the world not to be missed. My wife enjoyed the shopping in Ulaanbaatar, too.” —T.B., Colorado

Wolf hunting in Mongolia

Wolves are undeniably among the most formidable creatures in the natural world, commanding respect and awe with their prowess. In Mongolia, wolf hunting stands as a time-honored nomadic tradition that has been practiced for generations. For Mongolian nomads, the hunting of wolves transcends mere sport; it serves a vital purpose deeply rooted in the harmony of nature.

What does hunting for the wolves mean for Mongolian nomads?

According to the longstanding principles of nature, maintaining a delicate balance between wolf populations and the livestock of nomadic herders is paramount. When an imbalance occurs, leading to increased wolf attacks on nomadic animals, the nomads are compelled to engage in wolf hunting to safeguard their livelihoods.

Is it legal to hunt for the wolves in Mongolia?

While the hunting of steppe wolves is strictly prohibited in Mongolia to prevent indiscriminate killings facilitated by modern vehicles like jeeps, the hunting of mountain wolves is not subject to such restrictions. Modern Mongolians often utilize advanced vehicles to traverse rugged mountain terrain in pursuit of wolves, while adhering to traditional nomadic methods involves riding horses, armed with firearms, and accompanied by majestic eagles to detect and track wolves among the peaks. This nomadic approach to wolf hunting in Mongolia embodies a deeper authenticity and respect for the natural landscape.

Mongolia hunting tours

Mongolian nomads hunt for the wolves with Golden eagles

Throughout the expansive landscapes of western Mongolia , a rich tapestry of legends has been woven by nomadic communities practicing the ancient art of eagle falconry. Among these nomads, a storied tradition exists of hunting and capturing formidable wolves not through the use of firearms, but rather with the aid of specially trained golden eagles. While the concept of hunting with golden eagles has garnered significant popularity in western Mongolia, the primary focus has traditionally been on pursuing smaller prey such as foxes and mountain hares, as opposed to targeting the formidable wolves that roam the rugged terrain.

Hunting with eagles

Eagle hunting is a traditional type of falconry that was practised in the Eurasian steppe. Today, several forms of this art still exist in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, in Xinjiang in China, and in the province of Bayan Olgii , in Mongolia, where many Kazakhs live. Although Turks are renowned for hunting with eagles, they also train wood pigeons, peregrine falcons and saker falcons.

The Kazakhs who live in the province of Bayan Olgii keep up the ancestral art of eagle hunting. Nowadays, we can count 250 falconers (or "berkutchis") in the whole province. Here, the form of hunting practised is atypical and unique in the world, since it's held exclusively on horseback, with the help of a golden eagle. Preys are mainly foxes, but eagles sometimes catch hares or, more rarely, small wolves. Several eagles can hunt one single prey, so that they can catch bigger animals, such as ibex or wolves. The hunter's moon stretches from the beginning of October to the end of March, because it's easier to see the foxes' coat on the snow.

During your stay with a falconer, you will follow him horse riding in the neighbouring mountains . We almost exclusively walk our horse, so beginners can also take part in the game hunting. Once in the mountains, the falconer removes the mask from the eagle, and the eagle scans the horizon. Its panoramic view is eight times intenser than ours. If the eagle sees a prey, it starts to shout to be released by its master. Then, it swoops down on the prey and tries to catch it. If it manages to, the falconer quickly dismounts to join the eagle as fast as possible. He must avoid the eagle damaging the skin of the prey, or the injured prey injuring the eagle in its turn.

Those who don't like hunting needn't worry. This practice is very noble, complex, few money-making, guzzler of time and reserved for those who had a long preliminary training. Moreover, the eagle remains a wild animal, it can suddenly decide to disappear in the sky and to leave its master.

Eaglets are caught in the nestle, when they're not able to fly, or they're trapped a bit later with a net. Falconers prefer females because they're bigger and more powerful then males. They can weigh up to 7 kilograms (15,43 pounds) and have more than 2 metres (6,56 feet) of wingspan. First, the falconer starves the eagle for several days, then he can start the training : equilibrium, for the eagle to follow the movements of the horse while it's perched on its master's arm, and hunting strictly speaking, training with a lure called shirga .

The eagle will hunt with its master until it's 8 or 10 years old. Then it will be delivered and will wildly live again 20 years and find a partner for reproduction.
