Tired of going to the same bar every weekend? New in town and looking for that one perfect spot? Whatever the mission is, Texas Tasty has you covered when it comes to the best margaritas in Austin.

The Best Margaritas in Austin Texas

3300 W Anderson Ln #303, Austin, TX 78757

Eldorado Cafe

2. Velvet Taco

11501 Rock Rose Ave, Austin, TX 78758 (1 other location)

Velvet Taco

Velvet Taco in Austin offers a margarita and a frozen margarita, and that’s it. That’s all they need to offer, though, because their frozen margarita is a feat of simplicity. Bracing and refreshing, Velvet Taco’s margaritas are perfect for a quick sip.

3. Hula Hut

3825 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, TX 78703

Hula Hut

As given away by the name, Hula Hut puts a Hawaiian twist on the typical Tex-Mex fare found in Austin. This includes their beach-ready margaritas, which will make you want to jump into Lake Austin to complete the tropical experience. Get your luau on at Hula Hut, and get ready for a Wipeout Margarita.

4. Grizzeldas

105 Tillery St, Austin, TX 78702

Grizzeldas

If you’re looking for a drink that’s as visually stunning as it is tasty, stop in at Grizzeldas. The trendy margarita menu features familiar names like cardi b and bad girl ri ri, and each margarita has the sass to match its namesake. Don’t forget to snap a few pictures in the bright and chic dining room to preserve the memory of the most snazzy margarita you’ve ever had!

5. Taco Cabana

taco cabana

For those eternally on the go, drive-through margaritas may be the best option. Taco Cabana offers easily accessible lime, strawberry, mango, and seasonal margaritas at a variety of locations in Austin. Additionally, a gallon margarita tub is available to help get the party started.

6. La Condensa

400A W 2nd St, Austin, TX 78701

la condensa

Sometimes, less is more. With only three margaritas on the menu, La Condensa proves this proverb. Orange, pineapple, and cactus-lemongrass flavors elevate their must-try margaritas, one of which features top-shelf mezcal in place of the traditional tequila.

7. Mi Madre’s

2201 Manor Rd, Austin, TX 78722

mi madre

Mi Madre’s, which translates to “my mother’s,” offers a homey atmosphere, comfort food, and, of course, margaritas. The transition from taco shop to restaurant allowed a loyal community to form. Try one of their beautifully made margaritas, and you’re sure to join the family.

6406 N Interstate Hwy 35 Ste 2343, Austin, TX 78752

vivo

Bright and vivacious, Vivo is the perfect place for a refreshing margarita. This top notch drink spot is located in The Linc Shopping Center. Get some shopping done, then recharge with a margarita and get shopping again.

9. Jack Allen’s

3010 W Anderson Ln Ste D, Austin, TX 78757 (4 more locations)

jack allen's

Jack Allen’s commitment to farm-to-table dining is reflected in the freshness of their margarita ingredients as well. Ingredients are also sourced locally so you get a wholly Texan experience every time. For service that can’t be beat and a margarita to match, head down to Jack Allen’s.

10. Hopdoddy

2438 W Anderson Ln Suite #100, Austin, TX 78757 (5 other locations)

hopdoddy

Despite it being a burger joint, I’d grab Hopdoddy’s frozen margaritas to go any day. In fact, soaking up the alcohol with a heaven-sent burger is an enlightening experience. The House Margarita is a particular favorite, as you can order it by the half-gallon.

10520 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78753 (5 other locations)

chuy's

A community favorite, Chuy’s casual and lively atmosphere and full plates of delicious Tex-Mex make it a go-to spot for any occasion. Chuy’s margaritas are similarly enticing. I had my first ever margarita at Chuy’s Happy Hour, and have gone back regularly ever since.

12. Maudie’s

2608 W 7th, Austin, TX 78703 (5 other locations)

maudie's

Any margarita list without Maudie’s is incomplete. The bar menu includes over ten distinct specialty margaritas and classic, customizable house margaritas. There are plenty of frozen options as well, creating one of the most well-rounded margarita menus in Austin. And for those who, understandably, can’t pick just one, Maudie’s lets you take margaritas to-go.

13. Iron Cactus

606 Trinity St, Austin, TX 78701

iron cactus

Similar to Maudie’s, Iron Cactus’ strength lies in its variety. However, Iron Cactus’ extensive margarita menu is on another level as you can go for a specialty margarita or choose from their list of tequila flights to determine which margarita is best for you. All this happens in a sophisticated downtown setting with balcony seating available for an unforgettable night out.

The Happiness Function

Frozen or on the rocks: guide to the 18 best margaritas in austin.

best margaritas austin

Austin, Texas, is no stranger to mouth-watering Tex-Mex, authentic Mexican cuisine, and the best margaritas offered on this side of the Rio Grande. Even the late Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville” was inspired while he was sitting at a bar on Anderson Lane.

After living here for two decades and tasting these frosty concoctions on many occasions, here’s a curated list of the best margaritas in Austin (I think you’ll love).

Whether you prefer frozen or on the rocks, salt or no salt, freshly made or a huge pitcher of tequila-infused goodness, this selection has something for you.

1. Fonda San Miguel

fonda san miguel margarita

Address: 2330 W N Loop Blvd, Austin, TX 78756

One of Austin’s most well-established restaurants in central Austin, the ever-charming Fonda San Miguel , has been creating delicious food for years. However, their frozen guava margarita is one of the most delicious cocktails I’ve ever had. You can taste the fruit’s sweet flavor with every sip you take.

I recently took my mother-in-law, who also enjoyed her frozen mango marg and described it as “subtle, delicious, yet powerful.” That’s a good testament to the quality of their margaritas.

2. Maudie’s Tex-Mex

maudies margarita

Address: 1212 S Lamar, Austin, TX 78704

I also love this place. While researching to write this article, I found a review where one local Austinite describes “The Gil” at Maudie’s as her go-to margarita. This “clean, bright, and perfectly simple” beverage consists of Don Julio’s Blanco Tequila, Cointreau, and freshly squeezed lime juice with a salted rim, which meets all the requirements for an excellent margarita.

3. Eldorado Cafe

eldorado margaritas austin

Address: 3300 W Anderson Ln. #303, Austin, TX 78757

The Top Shelf Margarita at Eldorado is just that– top shelf. Guests can order their Tequila of choice mixed with freshly squeezed lime juice Cointreau and add a fruit flavor if preferred. Enjoy it served on the rocks with a salt or tajin rim.

This refreshing drink pairs wonderfully with the enchilada platter and the perfect “supa” queso appetizer — I highly recommend it!

4. Trudy’s

trudys mexican martini

Address: 8820 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78757

An Austin institute since 1977, Trudy’s Mexican Cafe has been serving some great Tex-Mex for a while, but their Mexican Martini is one for the books. Many have tried to copy it over the years, but have failed because perfection can’t be replicated — at least not in this instance.

5. De Nada Cantina

denada pink cup margarita

Address: 4715 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702

As part owner, I might be slightly biased, but this joint will quickly become your go-to spot on a hot summer day.

DeNada Cantina owners partnered with local craft cocktail genius Chris Bostick. Everything on the drinks menu at DeNada is exceptional , but their frozen margaritas in the notably collectible pink cups are considered by many to be the best margaritas in Austin.

Customers can order the classic or one of their rotating seasonal fruit margs–mango, guava, strawberry swirl, etc. But don’t pass on their margaritas on the rocks, either. My favorite is the “El Chingon,” made with Tromba Blanco Silver Tequila & Mathilde XO.

6. Workhorse Bar

workhorse bar margarita

Address: 100 N Loop Blvd E Suite B, Austin, TX 78751

When you walk into the unassuming Workhorse Bar on North Loop, you’d probably never expect them to serve one of the most flavorful margaritas in town, but they do. Made with Z Pepe Tequila, Paula’s Texas Orange, freshly squeezed lime, and agave nectar, I was thrilled to taste such an inviting cocktail while enjoying the juicy Bastrop Burger.

7. Taco Flats

taco flats margarita

Address: 5520 Burnet Rd #101, Austin, TX 78756

With three locations throughout the city, Taco Flats makes it easy for lovers of their frozen spicy margarita to get their drink on. Made with 100% agave tequila, triple sec, hand-squeezed lime juice, and topped with a fresh jalapeño slice, this cocktail is bound to wake up your tastebuds.

8. Licha’s Cantina

lichas cantina margarita

Address: 1306 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702

Known for its Mexican-style street food and mezcal-crafted cocktails, Licha’s Cantina’s house margarita is a definite winner. Made with tequila silver, fresh lime juice, and Combier (triple sec), this margarita is the perfect beverage to sip on during their Happy Hour every Tuesday through Friday — and it’s only $8!

9. El Naranjo

orange margarita

Address: 2717 S Lamar Blvd STE 1085, Austin, TX 78704

This 2022 James Beard award-winning restaurant creates some of the most flavorful Oaxcan-inspired dishes in Austin. Order a Duranzo margarita, which pairs perfectly with a plate of mole. This effervescent drink combines Cimarron Silver tequila, white peach puree, Naranja liqueur, and fresh-squeezed lime juice.

When I say it is scrumptious, I mean it.

10. Iron Cactus

iron cactus margarita

Address: 606 Trinity St, Austin, TX 78701

Iron Cactus has got you covered if you enjoy a downtown view while sipping on a spicy margarita. Overlooking Austin’s infamous 6th Street, guests can sample one of their many hand-squeezed craft margaritas.

Try the El Pepino margarita–Milagro Silver, muddled jalapeño, cucumber, and cilantro with fresh lime juice and agave nectar or another of their many signature drinks that don’t disappoint.

11. ATX Cocina

atx cocina margarita

Image Credit: Julie Royce/The Happiness Function.

Address: 110 San Antonio St #170, Austin, TX 78701

ATX Cocina does not mess around when it comes to their house-made margaritas. With their vast selection of tequilas, your margarita is made just as you like.

Their signature creation is hand-shaken with organic agave and a curated tequila choice, which goes ever so nicely with their carne asada–pecan-crusted prime skirt steak, jalapeño-tomato conserva, queso, and charred cebolla.

12. Gabriela’s Downtown

gabrielas margaritas austin

Address: 900 E 7th St, Austin, TX 78702

The spacious patio at Gabriela’s Downtown might be the best place to enjoy Michoacan-inspired dishes that have been passed down for generations. There’s no better beverage to pair with these meals than fresh-squeezed lime juice, tamarind, and grapefruit in a margarita.

They also serve flights of margaritas, so you can sample a little bit of everything. I know what you’re thinking —  yes, please, sign me up!

13. La Condesa

friends toasting with margaritas

Address: 400 W 2nd St A, Austin, TX 78701

La Condesa has been a preferred choice for birthday celebrations for my friends and me through the years. It has excellent food, a lovely ambiance, and delectable cocktails. Try their Margarita La Clásica on the rocks or the Margarita La Condesa with fresh pineapple juice for a surprising twist to this tasty cocktail.

Part of the downtown restaurant scene, this spot never disappoints.

14. Comedor

friends drinking margaritas

Address: 501 Colorado St, Austin, TX 78701

Named one of Esquire’s best new restaurants, Comedor delivers a punch with its dinner and drinks menu. Guests can enjoy a cutting-edge take on traditional Mexican dishes, like the Tacos de Pescado with grilled cabbage, toreado aioli, and salsa verde. Pair your food with an Oaxca margarita made with Reposado tequila, crema mezcal, Cointreau, and fresh lemon and lime juices.

15. Grizzelda’s

grizzeldas margaritas austin

Address: 105 Tillery St, Austin, TX 78702

Full of charm and color, Grizzelda’s offers some of Central Mexico’s most authentic and traditional Mexican dishes. The pink and floral pops of color throughout the space are enchanting. Enjoy a fun atmosphere and one of their “Fro-Mos,” a house-frozen margarita elevated with sangria, pureed fruit, and a Grand Marnier floater.

16. El Alma

el alma margaritas

Address: 1025 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704

Whether you want to enjoy one of the cool spring days or the nighttime skyline Austin offers, El Alma’s rooftop patio on Barton Springs Road is a great spot. With multiple margarita options available, there’s something all will be thrilled by.

I take great joy in their El Dorado, mixed with Don Julio Reposado, Grand Marnier, lime, and agave, served on the rocks.

17. Curra’s Grill

curras grill avocado marg

Address: 614 E Oltorf St, Austin, TX 78704

No “best margaritas in Austin” list would be complete without mentioning Curra’s Grill and their frozen Avocado Marg — a meal all unto itself. Kidding aside, this cocktail is divine and should be on everyone’s radar. I promise it doesn’t taste like guacamole.

They offer an entire assortment of other equally good margaritas, and their happy hour is one of the best in town.

18. La Piscina

La Piscina food and drinks

Address: 600 W 2nd St 5th Floor, Austin, TX 78701

I’ll be honest: I haven’t tried La Piscina’s margarita as of yet, but I polled many local friends and was met with a resounding “You have to try La Piscina’s margaritas,” so I’m adding them to the list and letting the chips fall where they may (pun intended).

Located inside the Proper Hotel, this poolside restaurant focuses on delivering Texas-inspired Mexican cuisine. I have been told their Margarita de la Casa, a choice of frozen or rocks, is the best Austin has to offer. Mixed with Lunazul Blanco, naranja, agave, orange bitters, lime, and citrus salt, I’ll let the readers decide for themselves.

Best Margaritas in Austin

margarita tour austin

Head out to happy hour in Austin and you’ll see margaritas galore—and not just at Tex-Mex joints. The city is full of margarita fanatics, so the competition to produce the tastiest one is fierce. Fresh lime juice and high-quality tequila are must-haves, but some restaurants and bars around town are adding creative twists to keep things interesting.

Gill’s Margarita at Maudie’s Tex-Mex

 Courtesy Maudie's

Named after a regular, Gill’s Margarita is a clean-and-crisp margarita on the rocks, made with fresh-squeezed lime juice, Don Julio Blanco and Cointreau. Prefer the frozen variety? Maudie’s House Frozen is equally popular, particularly after a long, hot summer day in Austin. Unlike many, this frozen margarita isn't blended from any sort of pre-made concoction.

Silver Coin Margarita at Fonda San Miguel

 Tracy Maurer

Traditionalists may balk at the idea of a red margarita, but their concerns will quickly fall away once they have a sip of the Silver Coin Margarita. This summery cocktail is mixed with watermelon-infused silver tequila and Cointreau, and perfectly topped with a fresh watermelon slice.

Mezcalina at El Naranjo

Subbing in mezcal for tequila, the mezcalina has more of a smoky flavor than your traditional margarita. El Naranjo's is a surprising blend of ingredients that is just as tasty as it is innovative. With muddled serrano peppers, agave nectar, basil, pineapple juice, and lime juice, you've got a drink that's both spicy and sweet.

Chilanga at El Alma

If you like your margarita with a hint of spice, try the Chilanga, a frozen margarita with ground chili pepper on the rim. There's also a blend of chiles in the drink itself, plus a dash of Valentina hot sauce, orange juice, and lime juice. The spice-infused frozen cocktail goes down smooth after the first few slurps. For a more traditional drink, try Charlie’s Special, served on the rocks with Don Julio silver, Cointreau, lime, and agave nectar.

Abita Rita at Fixe Southern House

Another unconventional take on the margarita, the Abita Rita blends Abita Amber beer with orange juice, Avion Silver, Grand Marnier, and lime juice. While you might usually keep your beer separate from your tequila, trust us on this one. The popular Louisiana beer has a malty, caramel flavor, giving this unusual cocktail a smooth finish.

Prickly Pear at El Chile Café y Cantina

Eye-catchingly pink, the frozen prickly pear margarita at El Chilé Cafe is excellent fodder for your Instagram. Don't let the pink fool you: It's only slightly sweet and has a sneaky kick. If you're in the mood for a classic, opt for the Top Shelf instead.

Margarita La Clásica at La Condesa

There’s no shortage of creativity in La Condesa’s impressive drink menu. A wonderful blend of tangy and sweet flavors, the Margarita La Clásica is made with El Jimador Blanco, Patrón Citrónge, lime, and agave nectar. Instead of standard salt around the rim, the glass is sprinkled with an aromatic cactus-lemongrass salt. Or, try the Alma Blanca margarita, a quirky blend of ginger liqueur, habanero-infused Exotico Blanco, corn, pineapple juice, and agave nectar—polished off with a hibiscus-and-rose-infused salt rim.

Avocado Margarita at Curra’s Grill

The avocado margarita is sort of like cilantro—people either love it enthusiastically or actively hate it. But the creamy texture and subtle flavor win many people over at Curra's. If you’re not ready to make the leap, Curra’s also has several flavors of traditional frozen and on-the-rocks margaritas.

512 Rita at Güero’s Taco Bar

 Courtesy of Resplendent Hospitality

The 512 Rita owes much of its smoothness to its 100% agave tequila, sourced from Austin-based brand Tequila 512 . Though it's triple-distilled with volcanic water in Jalisco, Mexico, this tequila has a distinctively Austin flair. Guero's Longhorn Margarita—concocted from Corzo Silver, Cointreau, lime juice and a splash of orange juice—is also a big crowd pleaser.

El Alma delivers modern Mexican fare with a unique Austin twist. Spend a sunny afternoon or a starlit evening on the beautiful rooftop patio perched at the crest of Barton Springs Road—with the best views of downtown Austin. Try the sweet n’ fruity Mangorita or go bold with the Flaquita, which is made with watermelon serrano-infused el Jimador Blanco.

Licha’s is a little bungalow known for its Mexico City-style street food and mezcal craft cocktails in East Austin. The house margarita—made with tequila silver, lime, and Combier (triple sec)—is a steal during Happy Hour held Tuesday through Friday. The outdoor space is huge, so get some friends together to grab a few pitchers on the large front, back, or side patio.

  • What to Order: Ever heard of a Ginger Lemon Margarita? It might just become your next go-to cocktail.

Wood table with various small plate dishes and cocktails at Comedor in Austin, Texas.

If you’re looking for a fun date night spot, Comedor can’t be beat. Chef Gabe Erales (Dai Due Taqueria, Noma) and Philip Speer’s (Uchi) modern Mexican restaurant is one of the best ways to spend a Saturday night. Al fresco dining, anyone? My favorite, though, was the Tequila Carrot, a vibrantly original tipple spiked with blanco tequila, anise-y xtabentun, and just enough lemon to cut through the earthy richness of the carrot juice.

  • What to Order: The Comedor margarita, infused with orange and punctuated by a lime zest–salted rim, is a fresh take on the south-of-the-border classic.
  • Happy Hour: Monday through Thursday. 5 to 6:30 pm.
  • 501 Colorado St. | 512-499-0977 | website | instagram

Most Options: Güero’s Taco Bar

Another Austin classic, Güero’s Taco Bar is a kitschy gem on South Congress with one of the best people-watching patios in the city. It also has one of the lengthiest margarita menus on this list, offering tons of tequila choices. Margaritas at Güero’s are served the old-fashioned way — hand-shaken and made with fresh lime juice. Pair your margarita with exceptional Tex-Mex fare like the mole, authentic tacos al pastor, or enchiladas with hand-made tortillas.

  • What to Order: The Longhorn—mixed with 512 Tequila made right here in Austin— is a Güero’s classic.
  • Happy Hour: Wednesday through Friday, 3 to 6 pm. $4 Frozen & Casa Margaritas, $2 off Signature Margaritas, and $2 Beers.
  • 1412 S Congress Ave. | (512) 447-7688 | website | instagram

The modern Mexican cuisine you’ll find at ATX Cocina makes this restaurant one of my top recommendations. From large to small plates, their food menu never fails to disappoint with unique dishes like red chile roasted chicken and Tex-Mex classics like queso fundido. If you’re a coconut fan like me, their Coco Loco is a sweeter cocktail that still packs a tequila punch.

  • What to Order: Sometimes, keeping it simple is the way to go with margaritas—the ATX margarita does the trick.
  • Happy Hour: Monday through Thursday, 5 to 6 pm and Friday through Sunday, 4 to 5 pm. $9 Margarita de la Casa and $9 Mezcal Paloma.
  • 110 San Antonio St #170 |  (512) 263-2322 | website | instagram

Two glasses of spicy grapefruit margarita beside halved grapefruit, lime, and a pinch pot of salt.

With a menu full of everything from breakfast tacos (a Tex-Mex staple), to tacos served with housemade blue corn tortillas, De Nada Cantina will satisfy both your hunger and cocktail cravings. Bonus points if you try their seasonal marg—the themed-drink trend is one of my favorite things about this city!

  • What to Order: Who doesn’t love a seasonal drink? De Nada’s seasonal margarita is made with fresh, in-season fruit.
  • Happy Hour: Monday through Friday, 3:30 to 6:30 pm.
  •  4715 E Cesar Chavez St | (512) 615-3555 | website | instagram

Best Food and Drink Pairings: Fresa’s

While Fresas’ Chicken al Carbon is to die for, their drink menu gives the delicious plate a run for its money. There’s a drink to go with just about every meal of the day—a few of my favorites being the rosa mimosa, ranch water, and pineapple mule.

  • What to Order: Cucumber in almost anything wins me over. Fresa’s cucumber cilantro marg is no exception.
  • Happy Hour: Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 pm. $2 off all Aguas Frescas, Botanas, Beer, Wine and Margaritas.
  • 1703 S 1st St | (512) 922-2946 | website | instagram

Best Location: Joann’s Fine Foods

The location of this restaurant alone could win it a spot on any list of Austin favorites. Joann’s Fine Foods, located in the Austin Motel in South Congress, is a cafe and cantina surrounded by high-end shops, local businesses, and a lively atmosphere. Their drink menu features Tex-Mex classics like the Paloma but also offers the option to add liquor to any agua fresca or juice on their menu.

  • What to Order: The Retro Margarita packs a little bit of a kick with added chile salt.
  • Happy Hour: Monday through Friday, 3 to 5 pm.
  • 1224 S Congress Ave | (512) 358-6054 | website | instagram

Woman in white long-sleeved floral dress holding cocktail.

La Condesa is a well-loved Austin staple thanks to its diverse menu, which is always a winning feature when dining with a large group. Their drink menu is no exception, consisting of less frequented cocktails like their watermelon martini made with elderflower liqueur and their seasonal sangria made from fresh local fruit and orange liqueur.

  • What to Order: I’m a big fan of adding fruit to my margarita, which makes the Margarita La Condesa with grilled pineapple one of my top picks.
  • Happy Hour: Monday through Friday from 5-6 pm. Half-off all alcoholic beverages.
  • 400 W 2nd St A | (512) 499-0300 | website | instagram

The authenticity of the ambiance and cuisine at Fonda San Miguel is what makes this restaurant stand out from many other Mexican restaurants in Austin. Their food and drink menus feature many dishes and drinks with Mexican roots, such as chile relleno, ceviche, and of course, margaritas!

  • What to Order: Fonda San Miguel’s Pepino Pica with cucumber and serrano peppers is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy.
  • Happy Hour: Monday through Thursday, 5 to 7 pm. $2 off tequila and tequila cocktails.
  • 2330 W N Loop Blvd | (512) 459-4121 | website | instagram

The $5 (And Under) Margarita Guide

December 8, 2023

There’s a direct relationship between the temperature outside and the enjoyment of margaritas—it’s just a scientific fact. And it’s even better when you can grab a couple without breaking the bank. So here's our guide for when you’re craving that nice, refreshing blend of tequila, lime, and agave, but don’t want to spend a bunch of money. From Happy Hours and daily specials, to all-the-time deals, here’s where to get a margarita for $5 or less.

Haymaker image

There’s a different drink special every night at Haymaker, and all day on Fridays they knock the price of a frozen margarita down to barely more than a gallon of gas. Grab an order of poutine—it’s one of the only spots to get it in town—to go with the inevitable second and third round you’ll be grabbing.

When: All day Friday

The Deal: $4 frozen margaritas

Sazan Ramen image

Sazan Ramen

Most of the time, we’re heading to Sazan in The Crescent shopping center in Highland for rich chicken-and-pork paitan ramen or some impossibly crispy chicken wings . Now, from 3-6pm every weekday, there’s another reason: $5 yuzu margaritas. Plus, you can get an order of those wings for half price.

When: Mon-Fri, 3pm-6pm

The Deal: $5 yuzu margaritas

La Mancha image

La Mancha is one of our favorite spots to bring out-of-towners looking for a real-deal Tex-Mex experience, complete with sizzling fajitas and papel picado crossing the airways. The margaritas here are always pretty reasonably priced, but during Happy Hour, these pint-sized margs get knocked down to just $5.

When: Mon-Thur, 3-6pm

The Deal: $5 pint-sized house margaritas

The Tavern image

Downtown Austin

We love the wings at The Tavern —you know, that probably haunted old building at 12th and Lamar that looks like a, well, tavern. But the next time you pop in for your chicken wing fix, time your visit during  Happy Hour and you’ll be able to accompany them with a house margarita for $5 (or get it flavored for a couple bucks more).

When: Mon-Fri, 4-7pm

The Deal: $5 house margaritas

Hopdoddy Burger Bar image

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

South Congress

Everyone in Austin knows about Hopdoddy for their burgers and those giant frosty goblets of beer. But the real trick is to come during Happy Hour and pick up a cold schooner of margarita (frozen or rocks). There are multiple locations throughout the Austin area, including South Congress, Plaza Saltillo, The Triangle, and West Anderson Lane.

When: Mon-Fri, 3-6pm

The Deal: $5 house margarita schooners (18oz goblets)

Waterloo Ice House image

Waterloo Ice House

West Austin

Waterloo Ice House has been an Austin institution for almost 50 years, and we like to think they’ve taken that time fine-tuning their margarita recipe. There’s a full bar with solid prices all the time, but with an all-day Happy Hour on Wednesdays, it’s not hard to see why people keep coming back for the $4 margaritas. There are four locations of Waterloo Ice House throughout the Austin area, so you're probably close to one right now.

When: All day Wednesday

The Deal: $4 frozen and rocks margaritas

Industry image

East Austin

Acting as a sort of tribute to service industry culture—casual, affordable, inclusive—Industry in Plaza Saltillo in East Austin is an all-day/late-night cafe, bar, and restaurant (the original location is in San Marcos). And on Mondays, aka “industry night,” they offer half off their house margs, plus some other great daily Happy Hour specials.

When: Monday, 9am-11pm

Enchiladas Y Mas image

Enchiladas Y Mas

Enchiladas Y Mas is known for two things in particular: excellent enchiladas, and potent margaritas (there’s a limit on how many you can order). They’re pretty affordable all the time, but if you really want to get the most for your dollar, show up on a weekday for lunch when frozen margaritas get knocked down to just $5.

When: Tues-Fri, 11am-2pm

The Deal: $5 8oz frozen margaritas

Doc's Backyard Bar & Grill image

Doc's Backyard Bar & Grill

South Austin

Whenever the outside temps cross into the triple digits, Doc’s knocks the price of their margaritas down to just $2, which somehow makes the sunburns, humidity, and necessary backup t-shirts just a little bit more bearable. Then, when you’re three margaritas and $6 into your evening, grab one of the many burgers off their menu to stay alive.

When: Whenever Austin hits 100°

The Deal: $2 margaritas

DK Maria's Legendary Tex-Mex image

DK Maria's Legendary Tex-Mex

DK Maria’s has been serving up Tex-Mex classics out of a well-decorated strip mall location in South Austin for a few years now, but the best time to visit is from 3:30-6:30pm when they offer half off a handful of appetizers and $5 margaritas.

When: Mon-Fri, 3:30-6:30pm

The Deal: $5 small house margaritas

Salsa Limón image

Salsa Limón

North University

If you happen to find yourself near campus and in need of something refreshing, hop into Salsa Limón during happy hour for $5 rocks margaritas on weekdays. They’re located just a little bit north of The Drag, so you won’t really have to worry about bumping into students carrying stacks of textbooks, and the astroturf patio might even make you feel like you’re enjoying those margaritas in a park somewhere and not on a relatively busy section of Guadalupe Street.

When: Mon-Fri, 2-6pm

The Deal: $5 rocks margaritas

Toomey Tap Room image

Toomey Tap Room

Toomey is Austin’s answer to what a bar would look like from the folks behind Kerbey Lane Cafe , which translates to a lot of crowd pleasers—like queso, burgers, and wings—and, of course, margaritas. They’re just over $6 normally, but during happy hour from 4-6pm on weekdays, they knock them down even more to just $5.

When: Mon-Fri, 4-6pm

The Deal: $5 el classico margaritas

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do you have to be to participate?

  • We welcome all ages and abilities. However, only those 21 and older will be served post-race margaritas.

My friends and family are coming to cheer me on, but not participating in the run. Can they join me at the Finish Line Party?

  • We welcome a good cheering squad (and entourage), but everyone must have a race bib to enter the Finish Line party. The bib is your access to food and beverages. Your cheering squad doesn’t have to participate in the run, but will have to register to receive a bib.

My dog loves to run. Can I bring him with me to the run?

  • Don’t get us wrong – we love our Trail dogs and know how fast they run! However, this run occurs on the streets adjacent to the Trail, and we worry about the hot asphalt on puppy dog feet! Plus, there will be large crowds at all turns, so we kindly ask that you leave your furry four-legged friend home in the AC for this one.

  Are running strollers allowed?

  • Yes. We just ask that anyone participating with a stroller start towards the back of the race for a smoother experience for everyone – including your little guest.

What time should I arrive?

  • The race begins promptly at 8:00PM to maximize Margarita’s time. We suggest you arrive around 7:00PM. We will have a guided pre-run stretch at 7:30PM, followed by pre-run programming before the shotgun start.

What can I expect at the Finish Line Party?

  • Your registration includes entry into the Finish Line Party at Auditorium Shores. You must have your bib to enter, so please leave it on! There will be a Maudie’s Tex-Mex Nacho Bar, several Margarita bars, live music, activations, and more. We will also have an assortment of non-alcoholic drinks and water available. All food and beverages are complimentary with your race entry.

I registered for the run but now cannot make it. Can I request a refund or transfer my registration?

  • Unfortunately not. We do not offer refunds or transfers due to schedule changes, weather conditions, or cancellations. Both policies are stated numerous times during the registration process. Since Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run is one of The Trail Conservancy’s annual fundraising events, registration fees go directly to The Trail Conservancy’s work. We are sorry you can’t make it, but rest assured that you are helping give back to the Trail you love. And you still get a t-shirt, so let us know if you won’t be in town, and we can mail it to you. (You can wear it and brag about your speed; we won’t tell if you don’t!)

My boyfriend and I were picked up at our hotel (even after being annoying and switching our pick up location from the visitors center to our hotel, which Josh accommodated without issue, and kept us posted on his arrival via text). We eneded up having a private tour as we were the only ones booked, but it was still so great! We went to 3 breweries, and Josh was so great about splitting his time hanging with us, but also giving us some alone time which was really nice since we were on our own! He drove us around loads in a super fun open air car as well, and we got to see some bonus tourist locations since we were alone on the tour and had some spare time! It was our favorite night in Austin by far, and Josh was happy to drop us off on the main drinking street after the tour so we could check out all the bars he recommended! It was great not to have to get a cab there from our hotel after the tour, so it was a great bonus! If you're in Austin, whether you live there or just visiting, TAKE THIS TOUR! You wont regret it!!!!!!! THANK YOU JOSH!!! Read more Written December 20, 2019

  • jdmacht 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointment is all I can say... Stay away if its ‘Viator’ sold. Our tour guide was a nice kid, but had NO real Austin nor Foodie background. He was basically the same as an Uber-driver who took us to a place, ordered food and left us. He came back to pick us up. The marketing promised a driver “and” a a tour guide but simply delivered a shuttle ride. We do a lot of food tours globally and this one ‘disappointed’ big time. #booViator #badViator #Viator disappointment Read more Written October 1, 2019
  • Y8536LMsarahw 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do not book We booked this tour a couple of days ago but sadly it never happened. There was nowhere during booking for us to select our pick up location, which we thought was odd, so we sent the company a message advising of our location and tried to call 3 times, each time we were forwarded to voicemail. We had our doubts about the tour at this point but optimistically waited at our hotel at the time stated however the tour vehicle didn't arrive. We called Viator who also couldn't contact the company so refunded us. We ended up visiting each of the locations on our own at a fraction of the cost, so wouldn't have been worth it anyway. This tour is provided by Ryde, the taxi firm so you are better off, taking Ubers to each location as they are all within a couple of square miles of each other. Read more Written September 26, 2019

  • andrewwolfe91 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not a tour, an overpriced taxi service As other reviewers have mentioned, the advertising for this is completely false. There is no tour. You are picked up in a golf cart and taken to 3 places. No information about the history of the city or anything. You don’t meet any pitmasters or head brewers. You are simply dropped off at three locations. The driver comes in to pay for the set of food or drinks then leaves ...and then you have to find them when you want to leave. Not worth $100. • 721fjk 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good for 1st time visitor but needs improvement We enjoyed the afternoon and our guide, Jack, did a great job. The 3 couples we met were fun and helped make the afternoon. Had we known then what we know now, we would have taken this trip independently. Our first stop was Stubbs BBQ (although no pit master appearance, as advertised). We also visited Uncle Billy's Brewery and Smokehouse (beers only, none of which were enjoyed by our group) and Zilker Brewing Company and Taproom (5-star beer!). We were to have visited Banger Sausage House and Beer Garden, however, it was closed for a private party. At each stop we seemed to catch the venue staff by surprise which is surprising if this tour is a regularly scheduled activity. Again, it was odd that our guides were not aware that Banger's was closed. As a side trip, we were taken to Barton Springs Municipal Pool to see the site and get a very cursory understanding of this attractive and very crowded local attraction. The meal at Stubbs was a hit. Each couple was served the Stubb's Major combo plate and was able to choose 3 meats and 2 sides to share. There was more than enough food. Tea, water and soft drinks were included. Beer or cocktails were available for purchase. Be sure to verify your pick up location. The location details provided in our email confirmation and the actual pick up location caused us some confusion and unnecessary walking (on a 103 degree day). Had it not been for tour guide Jack texting and calling prior to pick up we would have been in a real pickle. Read more Written September 16, 2019

  • travelgirl0202222 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles What a blast - you must take this tour! My husband and I were in Austin for 48 hours - we originally were just supposed to have a layover in this amazing city - and all I will say about that is, I am sure glad we had flight cancellations on our way back to Chicago! We hopped on Trip Advisor to find a cool tour we could do, as we have never visited Austin before. My husband and I love to eat and drink wherever we visit. Well, we found this gem at the top of the search list. We were able to book within 24 hours. Our tour driver was able to pick us up right at our hotel downtown. The tour guide was FANTASTIC! With no knowledge of this city, what to do, what to eat, or what to drink - we got the in's and out's of it all from just this 3 hour tour. The BBQ at House Park melted in our mouths, and all of the local beer we were able to try was just great. The driver took us back to the hotel, although we talked to him about wanting to do something after - he even offered to take us wherever our little hearts desired! But once we got back - after some thought, we returned to Bangers, one of the 3 stops on the tour, for some more of the tasty beer. There are 3 other tours this same company offers - and my husband and I want to come back and do the rest!! These tour guides know their knowledge, and I can say with certainty that they show us the best places around town. Fabulous tour all around!!! Read more Written July 18, 2019

Baseball develops some of its best elements in the Minor Leagues, from the talent of players, to ballpark promotions to rule changes. That also extends to food. Of course, you can get all your favorites -- Cracker Jacks, hot dogs, cotton candy, beer, cola and all the rest -- at any Minor League park, but almost all of them also offer regional specialties, experimental festive fare or a combination of both.

  • Subscribe to Ben’s Biz Beat Minor League Newsletter

Here are eight new food items, concocted through that old Minor League spirit of innovation and experimentation, that you’ll be able to find at a MiLB park in 2024.

Sweet Pig Burger

Lehigh Valley IronPigs -- Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies

  • Get tickets to an IronPigs game | Coca-Cola Park Ballpark Guide

The IronPigs, as you might have guessed, have a thing for bacon. They also have a thing for, well, just about every kind of food. So robust is the Lehigh Valley concessions scene that the team maintains a standalone website dedicated entirely to in-park offerings. One of several new additions this year is the Sweet Pig Burger, which gets the “sweet pig” part of its moniker from the black peppercorn candied bacon it’s topped with. It also includes candied jalapeños and is served on a brioche bun.

Frycuterie Box

West Michigan Whitecaps -- High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers

  • Get tickets to a Whitecaps game | LMCU Ballpark Guide

Charcuterie boards have had what they call a moment in what they call the foodie social media world. The Whitecaps, perennial concessions pioneers, have taken the craze to a new level with an assortment of fried deliciousness. The Frycuterie Box, served in a pizza box, includes waffle fries, “mini mashers,” cheese curds, jalapeño bacon firecrackers and a minimum of three sauces (“rich nacho cheese, tangy BBQ sauce, and zesty chili”).

PB&J Bacon Hot Dog

Hear us out… PB&J Bacon Hot Dog 😮‍💨🌭🥓 pic.twitter.com/zvjbKD8yN5 — Midland RockHounds (@RockHounds) March 29, 2024

Midland RockHounds -- Double-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics

  • Get tickets to a RockHounds game | Momentum Bank Ballpark Guide

We’re cheating a little bit here, as the PB&J Bacon Hot Dog has been available at Momentum Bank Ballpark in past seasons, but it hasn't been advertised until now. In fact, the bacon in this item was initially “thrown on as a joke,” per the team, but that addition made the whole thing taste too good to forget. The RockHounds are ready to get serious about the jape, and fans of hot dog-based culinary shenanigans will reap the benefits.

Pork roll, egg and cheese on a roll

Jersey Shore BlueClaws -- High-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies

  • Get tickets to a BlueClaws game | ShoreTown Ballpark Guide

Pork roll (a processed meat log no doubt more appetizing than its textbook definition) is a New Jersey staple, as are the BlueClaws. This season, they’ve joined forces, as a Taylor Pork Roll stand opens at ShoreTown Ballpark. A number of creative takes on pork roll items will be available, and the BlueClaws are also serving up the classic – pork roll, egg and cheese on a roll. Breakfast and baseball go well together any time.

Vegetarian Fusion Bowl

Albuquerque Isotopes -- Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies

  • Get tickets to an Isotopes | Isotopes Park Ballpark Guide

It was not so long ago that vegetarians, like many people with specific dietary restrictions or preferences, could reasonably describe their dinner options at sporting events along a spectrum of “fairly limited” to “virtually nonexistent.” Those days are behind us, and nothing illustrates that fact quite so vibrantly as Albuquerque’s Vegetarian Fusion Bowl. A dish that will likely appeal to omnivores as well, it’s built around a plant-based pork substitute and features crispy vegetables, kimchee, cilantro, jalapeños, pickled onions, a creamy avocado drizzle and a hoisin-ginger-soy sauce blend served atop rice. Who’s drooling?

Margarita Shrimp Tacos

Pensacola Blue Wahoos -- Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins

  • Get tickets to a Blue Wahoos game | Blue Wahoos Stadium Ballpark Guide

Originally an experiment of the Blue Wahoos’ “Funky Taco Night” in seasons past, the Margarita Shrimp Tacos are here to stay in 2024. The item presents a twist on the phrase “shrimp cocktail,” with Adobo seasoned shrimp, house Smokey slaw, margarita guacamole, pico de gallo and lime crema. Pensacola’s season hasn’t started yet, but it’s already the taco the town.

Rally Cap Injectable Donut Holes

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers -- High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers

  • Get tickets to a Timber Rattlers game | Fox Cities Stadium Ballpark Guide

Timber Rattler fans have known and loved the team's cinnamon sugar donut holes for a few years now. This year, Wisconsin is offering a dizzyingly intriguing innovation on them. The Rally Cap Injectable Donut Holes are warmed and tossed in the standard cinnamon-sugar blend, but also given an injection of raspberry sauce, chocolate sauce or Bavarian cream. Any two injections are covered with purchase of the donut holes, and all three can be had for an extra $2.50. The “Rally Cap” in question is the souvenir helmet in which these bad boys are served.

Saints Sundae

St. Paul Saints -- Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins

  • Get tickets to a Saints game | CHS Field Ballpark Guide

Some days there’s just not enough ice cream or candy. The Saints, saints that they are, are working to make sure nobody ever has one of those days at CHS Field. The Saints Sundae includes THREE full-sized candy bars of the top-shelf variety -- Skor, Snickers and 3 Musketeers -- as well as Oreos, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, caramel, fudge, whipped cream and a cherry on top. Your ice cream options are chocolate, vanilla or both, and, of course, the base-bowl can be collected and used whenever you want to attempt to recreate this transcendental experience at home.
