Cruise to Greenland!
By OCVTSGIRL , July 29, 2023 in Royal Caribbean International

I was just perusing Royal Caribbean's website and checking to see what cruises there were out of Boston (I live in NJ) and came across a cruise that goes to Greenland. Has anybody done this? Thoughts?

Jewel is doing a RT to Greenland in September out of Cape Liberty.
I had a couple stops in Greenland on last fall's Voyager Arctic Crossing from Copenhagen to Boston. Cruising Prins Christians Sund was amazing!
I am on the Sept. sailing on the Jewel, and I also stopped there on the 2018 Serenade Northern TA. What specifically do you want to know? It’s beautiful, and very isolated. Not a lot to do as far as excursions, but the beauty is walking around and talking with the locals. I only visited Qaqortoq before, so I’m looking forward to 2 new ports.

We are booked on the Boston to Greenland ‘24 cruise. Looking forward to it!
Spent a lot of time looking for the Greenland out of NJ for 25 since this years has been sold out for a while for us. Thankfully, a Next Cruise person figured it out and told us about the Boston cruise. Whew.

I am sailing on Grandeur out of Boston to Greenland next year
We were on the Voyager Artic crossing last September with a stop in Greenland, Qaqortoq and we found this one of the most unappealing cruise ports we have ever been in. First, there were very limited excursions, even from RCCL and private, forget about it. There was basically one store and as we wondered about the town, we found people to be pretty uninterested in cruise passengers. I know it is a popular cruise stop now, but one would think they might do something to help passengers enjoy this port. It's funny, because we usually love to wander about on our own and explore new ports, but this port was depressing to say the least. We were very disappointed.
We were also supposed to stop in Nuuk, but that was canceled.
The sail thru the Fiord the next day was thrilling though. We had a glorious day and each and every turn brought new vistas of grandeur. Wonderful day.

There were three grocery stores in town.
And thousand of flying insects. 😞

I'm just curious if anyone who went there, liked it. I didn't realize there were cruises to Greenland so wanted to get opinions so I could decide whether to book it. Thanks for any info anyone can give me...pro or con.

If buying anything in the grocery stores in Greenland, do they take cash or credit cards?

Qaqortoq wasn't anything to brag about, but cruising through Prins Christians Sund was AMAZING!

Credit cards accepted. Cash would be Danish Krone.

We did an 14 night Arctic TA last September from Copenhagen to Boston. It went to Norway, Iceland and Greenland and it was awesome! And we would do it again!
Edit to add that we cruised Prins Christin Sund one of the days and it was unbelievably beautiful! The highlight of the whole trip! And we definitely want to do that again…
little britain
Sadly Prins Christin Sund is not on the itinerary as that is on the eastern side
There is a huge RC of over 500 for the 9/14 Jewel cruise on Mr Z’s site with dozens of links to videos etc so you can see the ruggedness and how undeveloped it is.
island lady
Going there on World Cruise next year. 🙂
Then again with Viking Expedition Northwest passage the following year. Visiting seven ports in Greenland on that one.
Looking forward to the "parka" life. 😉 Getting away from the usual Carib cruises.

Booked on the August 2023 Jewel TA from Amsterdam to Cape Liberty (17 nights), to include Iceland (four days, three ports), Greenland and Canada (three ports). Cruise also includes Prins Christin Sund.
No more than 2 sea days at a time. All the sea days are in-between stops. Great Itinerary.
Super excited.

Who is Mr. Z?
This is one where I consider the journey to be the destination. Two of the ports are by tender so who knows if those will make it, the excursions are expensive, and there's really not much there. There's no scenic fjord cruise by on the Bayonne to Bayonne itinerary. But there is a chance at the Northern Lights, and hopefully a feeling of getting away from it all. It's also a rare chance for a 14 night cruise that doesn't require airfare for people who can drive to the port.

aw very nice. And best part is no flights to Europe. I am glad the ship goes to Newfoundland too.

it is an easy way to see Greenland without expensive flights to Europe. And also to enjoy one of the older ships before they sell her.

Anyone that sells the Jewel has no soul. Seriously, these ships go places others can't. Should have kept Empress too. Best ship for food, ports, and service! Many first time cruises on these ships that build brand loyalty.

I'm looking forward to all the stops even if there isn't really anything there.
Just booked the last tour we needed, to call it a wrap.
Even have a netted hat in case there are lots of flying bugs . 🤣 😂 .

Qaqortoq Cruise Port Guide
Qaqortoq, Greenland is a place teeming with thousands of years of Nordic history, soothing hot springs, and water activities like exploring on a sailboat. On a transatlantic cruise that stops in Greenland, you’ll find yourself far from the ordinary. Traveling in an Arctic climate requires a certain level of curiosity and adventure, but you never have to sacrifice comfort while you explore the region on one of our luxury cruise ships.
Only about 3,000 people live in Qaqortoq, which means it’s a cozy, tight-knit community. Take a dip in the hot springs of Uunartoq for complete rejuvenation and restoration. Discover the ruins of an ancient Viking settlement at Hvalsey Church. Experience authentic cuisine from the area, or simply walk around the colorful streets. On your Greenland cruise, this quirky colonial town will welcome you with open arms.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to qaqortoq, lake tasersuaq.
The majestic beauty of this artsy Greenland town is best experienced on foot. A hike around Lake Tasersuaq promises incredible views of Qaqortoq and the mountain just beyond.
Hvalsey Church
The last evidence of the Vikings in Greenland can be found at Hvalsey Church, where the best-preserved Nordic ruins in the area overlook the waterfront. The isolated, commanding ruins showcase thousands of years of Nordic history. Guided tours are popular, and it takes about 25-30 minutes via boat to reach the ruins of Hvalsey Church.
Qaqortoq Museum
The Qaqortoq Museum is an ideal stop for history buffs during a Greenland cruise. The museum is cleverly located within an old blacksmith workshop. Here, you’ll find artifacts of both the Inuit and Norse populations from thousands of years ago.
Learn More About Transatlantic Shore Excursions
Top things to do in qaqortoq, enjoy the arts.
Take a tour called the Qaqortoq Art Walk, where you’ll experience an interactive, open-air art exhibition featuring the work of nearly 20 Nordic artists. Each of the 24 sculptures carefully cradles the city of Qaqortoq. Called “Stone and Man,” it’s a can’t-miss experience for Nordic history buffs and art lovers.
Nature Walks
Qaqortoq is best experienced on foot, whether you’re taking a nature tour through the foothills or gallivanting through the center of town. Qaqortoq’s hillsides lead to stunning fjord views, dramatic landscapes, and rows of colorful colonial homes in red, orange, and green everywhere you look.
Top Food & Drink Spots Near the Qaqortoq Cruise Port
The food scene in Qaqortoq is minimal, so don’t expect to find chain restaurants lining every street corner downtown. Stop in for drinks and live music at Arctic Cafe. When you see a yellow VW peeking from the wall, you’ll know you’re in the right place. Restaurant Napparsivik is popular for morning or afternoon coffee, fresh meat and fish dishes, and regional eats. Inside the Hotel Qaqortoq, enjoy a drink at Mikisoq, a local pub.
Culture & History of the Qaqortoq Cruise Port
Surviving in the frigid climate was no small feat for early residents, who were Paleo-Eskimo populations, Norse Vikings, and later, the Dorset people. Most of Greenland is occupied by arctic ice caps, so most people who settle down to live in the country gather in coastal cities and towns. By the 20th century, Greenland had established strong trade ties with North America and Denmark. The economy relies on natural resources, from whaling to fishing.
Qaqortoq Port Facilities & Location
Once you arrive, there is a tourist office with helpful city maps and free internet. You can get your bearings here before heading out to explore. Local maps detail the area’s hiking trails and the most popular attractions you can choose from on a Greenland cruise to Qaqortoq.
Transportation in Qaqortoq
Qaqortoq is fairly walkable, and there’s a ferry service that connects the city to other parts of the country. You can head into the center of town after a short tender ride while on cruises to Iceland and Greenland.
Shopping Near the Qaqortoq Cruise Port
Shopping near the Qaqortoq cruise port is fairly minimal since the town has a population of 3,000 people. Qaqortoq Souvenir Shop is a popular place to shop for keepsakes like handmade goods and authentic souvenirs.
Local Currency & Tipping Customs
The official currency of Greenland is the Danish krone (DKK), but you’ll find British pounds and U.S. dollars are accepted in some establishments. Credit and debit cards are less likely to be used in smaller shops, so be sure to ask when you arrive before trying to pay with a credit card. A service charge is typically included in your bill at restaurants.

Your Casino Drink Is A Tell
Pair the perfect cocktail with your game of choice, by meena thiruvengadam | published on april 19, 2024.
There's nothing like walking into a casino to make you want to order a cocktail, and there's nothing like your casino drink to give other players a glimpse of who you are.
Maybe it's the lights or the sound of an audience when the dice land just right on the craps table. Or maybe it's seeing well-dressed players gathered around a blackjack table or engrossed in a game of Texas Hold 'em. Whatever draws you into the casino and whatever your game of choice, there's a cocktail, beer or wine that's perfect for the night ahead. And you might even be able to get it for free.
When you join the Club Royale® rewards program, use your SeaPass® card to earn loyalty points by playing your favorite casino games, and when you hit Prime status or above, you'll get free drinks when playing in the Casino.
Whatever your loyalty level, remember the best drink to order at the casino is whatever you want. Go ahead and order your favorite casino drink, then stick around for a second round. The tables and slot machines are waiting for you.
Ready For Brunch And Baccarat
If you're the kind of cruiser who could eat breakfast for every meal and prefers hitting the casino early to spend time at the baccarat table, you're probably in the mood for a classic brunch drink. A post-brunch mimosa or Bellini might be right on the money. Combining the bright flavors of orange juice or peach puree with prosecco never leaves you guessing what you'll order next — or if you're ready to place your bets.
If you opt for a bloody mary or an Irish coffee, you could be trying to signal that you're ready to take on the day, no matter how late you were up the night before. You're probably one of the first people at the table, getting a jump on the action.
At midday, an Aperol or Campari spritz or a frosé will keep your spirits high as you place your bets, especially if you're cruising during the summer months or in warm climates.
Like baccarat, a glass of wine or prosecco is straightforward. If you enjoy spending time visiting wineries and never say no to a trip to California's Napa Valley, either of these is a no-brainer. Get ready to toast to the day and your opponents, and leave the table a winner regardless of what happens at the end of each hand.
Classy Cocktails and Craps
If you've got your eye on the craps table, you're in the right place at Casino Royale℠. Walk up to your favorite gaming table with a cocktail served in a martini glass to show you've got great taste in drinks and in table games. Craps is fast-paced, fun and goes down easy — just like your favorite cocktail.
Roll the dice on any number of sweet cocktails. A lemon drop martini, key lime martini or chocolate martini might suggest great taste in desserts — and a sweet tooth that can only be quenched by putting your chips on the winning number. Order a cosmopolitan to show you're a glamorous gambler with a sense of style — you might start at the table games, but you'll likely finish the night spending your winnings in a boutique onboard.
Dry martinis, gin and whiskey-based cocktails can suggest a preference for classics. These drinkers are the most likely to try their hand at an iconic casino game at sea. Order a casino cocktail — which is made with gin, maraschino liqueur and lemon juice — and you're showing you come to the casino as much for the scene as for the games.
Have a gimlet to show you're all class and just a little bit of sass or a gin and tonic to show off your no-nonsense personality. Gin-and-tonic drinkers are the kinds of gamblers who almost always skip the slot machines and head straight for the gaming tables. Craps provides just the right amount of excitement and strategy for you, and you'll bring the luck.
If you're in the mood for a mocktail, you'll signal that you want to keep your wits about you while enjoying the variety of flavors that can be whipped up behind the bar.
Whether you fancy a lemon drop martini, gimlet or cosmopolitan, other players will see that you know what you like and how to treat yourself by ordering a classic cocktail. Most of all, you'll show you're up for a late night at the casino tables — and maybe a nightcap after.
Slots Go Hand in Hand With Fruity Cocktails
If you're looking to show off your playful personality or make new friends at the slot machines to meet up with later by the pool, opt for a fruity cocktail. With one of these drinks, you're telling fellow gamblers you prefer sunny vacations to adventures in the snow. And when you're not in the casino, you're most likely to be found on the sun deck or in the pool.
When you're in the casino, you probably find yourself at the slot machines, where nothing goes better with a win than a tropical drink. Blue, green, pink or yellow, you're the kind of gambler likely to find a slot machine that matches your mood — and the drink you're sipping — and you're going to enjoy every minute of every game you play. Besides, these cocktails were made for celebrating.
You might choose a refreshing lime rickey that feels like jumping into a cold pool on a hot summer day or a Bahama mama as you reminisce about your favorite part of your cruise so far. Order a Blue Hawaii and fool your fellow gamblers into thinking you're a surfer who loves riding the waves when in reality you're more likely to surf the slot machines..
A mango margarita or piña colada shows you always know how to look on the bright side. Walk around with a daiquiri and it'll be clear you're a creative spirit who has a way with words and a love for all things Ernest Hemingway.
Go ahead and order one of these fruity cocktails to kick off your night at the slot machines.
Exotic Drinks Are Made for the Roulette Table
Some of the best drinks to order at a casino show you know your way around the bar — and the roulette table. If you choose a drink with unique ingredients, you've likely traveled around the world. You know what you like to drink and what games you like to play. You're probably looking for something a little more exciting, or a twist on an international classic.
If you're a Singapore sling drinker, you're playing roulette but you might be daydreaming about your next far-flung adventure. But if you're a paloma drinker, you love tequila so much you know what you prefer in a cocktail, and what you prefer to shoot straight.
If you order a Tom Collins, you have a story to tell, whether it's about an exciting day in port or the epic show you saw last night. Anyone who's keeping up with you in conversation will be your match in roulette. But order an airmail and you're signaling to everyone around that table that you know your way around the cruise ship library just as well as you know your way around the roulette table.
Have a caipirinha and get up to dance around when you win — your free spirit shows the table you're ready for a night of adventure.
Order a rum old fashioned and give the roulette wheel a spin. Whatever happens, you'll roll with it. Or you can order a paper plane and try again with a bourbon-based cocktail in your hand.
The imbibers of these drinks are good with details — whether it's the rules of the games they're playing or the unique ingredients in the cocktails they prefer. If you're one of these people, you spend your time learning about the things you're passionate about. That list includes roulette, and you consider yourself something of a seasoned player.
Poker Night Pints and Mixers
If your go-to drinks are beer, liquor shots or mixed drinks that blend booze and fizzy sodas, it's a pretty good bet that you're headed to the poker tables. You prefer drinks and games that require you — and other players — to be able to read the room. It's unlikely that you'd be caught with a frozen cocktail in your hand. You prefer something strong and simple — especially as you place your bets on winning hands.
When it comes to shots, ordering a tequila shot might signal it's your first time in the casino on this trip, and you're ready to make it count. Go straight to whiskey shots to tell your fellow players you'll be at the table all night. If you're here for a bachelor or bachelorette party, you're probably going for a Fireball shot instead. It is, after all, a celebration.
If you're serious about poker, you'll probably order a whiskey and Coke since you're ready to sip on your drink as you play round after round or keep the good times rolling with a session beer. Order a vodka soda if you know when to call it a night and can sense that time is quickly approaching. If you're keeping the night light and are in the mood for a few hands, stick to hard seltzers. The bubbles will keep you going and keep your eyes on the prize — that big pile of chips gathering in the pot.
If you're a scotch drinker, you'll probably be reminiscing about the good old days, while black and tan drinkers are taking everything from beverages to vacations up a notch. You'll be ready to go all in on the evening and on your hand.
Poker players are usually the life of the party, and you might have a Negroni in hand to prove it. You'll have the other players laughing at your jokes all night. If you're a Southern charmer, it's likely you'll order a sazerac instead, but you'll still have the table leaning on you to keep the good times going.
If you're a newer poker player and looking for some tips, you'll find just what you're looking for with a sour. A whiskey sour or an amaretto sour might suggest that you're new to the casino, but that you're a quick learner with specific taste. A pisco sour will intrigue the whole table — what are you hiding behind that smile? You're a natural-born explorer ready to pick up any hints you can behind fellow players' bluffs.
If you're just playing for a good time, you might be sipping a rum and Coke. You prefer to live life in your flip-flops and are thrilled to while the hours away with some fun in the casino — winning is just a bonus!
When it comes to drinks to order at a casino, you can't go wrong no matter what you choose. Once you've picked your drink and your game, get ready for a casino tournament that will shake up your trip and keep the fun coming.

6 Top Transatlantic Cruises for 2024
T ransatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.
That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.
Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.
Cunard Line
Date: Departs May 5, 2024
Departure port: Brooklyn, New York
Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)
Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights
In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.
The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.
Seabourn Cruise Line
Date: Departs March 24, 2024
Departure port: Miami
Starting price: $5,949 per person (plus port taxes and fees)
Cruise length: 21 nights
Seabourn is offering a 21-night transatlantic cruise from Miami on Seabourn Quest in March 2024 that offers a diverse range of ports of call before ending its voyage in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands . Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.
This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.
MSC Cruises
Date: Departs Nov. 8, 2024
Departure port: Southampton, England
Starting price: $769 per person (plus port taxes and fees)
Cruise length: 16 nights
The MSC Virtuosa from MSC Cruises is repositioning from Europe to the Caribbean in November 2024, which gives travelers the chance to enjoy a lengthy transatlantic crossing with plenty of unique ports. This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

Raw HTML : Tips on Trips and Expert Picks
Princess Cruises
Date: Departs July 5, 2024
Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)
Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)
Cruise length: 31 nights
Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.
This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.
Celebrity Cruises
Date: Departs April 11, 2024
Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)
Cruise length: 12 nights
Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.
The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.
Royal Caribbean International
Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024
Departure port: Barcelona, Spain
Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)
Cruise length: 14 nights
Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.
Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.
