Their journeys were not easy. Many overcame poverty, bullying and discrimination. Yet they never gave up, overcame long odds and became successful immigrants.
Ann Badmus of Scheef & Stone shares their inspirational stories every year at the Immigrant Journey Awards Dinner. She founded the event seven years ago and hosts it each June — Immigrant Heritage Month. This year's dinner was held Friday at The Clubs of Prestonwood in Dallas.
The keynote speaker was Gauthami Vemula, founder of Color Me Safe, a family crisis management firm. She talked about her journey from India to New York to Hobbs, N.M., where her Indian family stood out. Despite the challenges she faced, she feels "so lucky to be part of this nation" and urged guests to "look at what unites us."
Awards were given in four categories. The Immigrant Spirit Award went to Raj and Aradhana Asava, Susie Jennings and Graciela Katzer. The Immigrant Advocate Award was presented to Mary Domínguez-Santini and Leonid Regheta.
Professional Excellence Award winners were Major Adebayo Adeleke, Cynthia Nwaubani and Akash Patel. The Immigrant Entrepreneur Award went to Mani Manickavelu, Guadalupe Mora and Andrea Pedraza.
Scholarships were presented to Kaci Nguyen, Hillary Shah and Eh Kaw Thaw.

Several organizations around the area are celebrating International Yoga Day, which is Thursday. Jagadguru Kripaluji Yog hosted Dallas Yoga Fest on Saturday at Southfork Ranch in Parker. The daylong event included speakers, workshops, a health fair and a market place.
On Sunday, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial committee conducted a yoga session in front of its Gandhi statue at Thomas Jefferson Park in Irving. The committee also recognized the three top winners in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Organizers presented plaques and medals to champion Karthik Nemmani, 14, of McKinney; second-place finisher Naysa Modi, 12, of Frisco; and third-place winner Abhijay Kodali, 11, of Flower Mound. Because it was Father's Day, the winners also posed for photos with their dads with the statue of Gandhi, the father of India, looking over them.

TAO Arts and Ikebana
Flowers bloom next to paintings in the "Chinese Garden Party" exhibit at the Irving Arts Center. The Association of Oriental Arts, or TAO Arts, presents the annual exhibit, which pairs two Asian art forms: Chinese brush painting and ikebana , the Japanese style of arranging flowers in rhythmic ways. Members of the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of Ikebana International and Sogetsu Dallas Branch created the arrangements to complement the paintings.
TAO Arts is dedicated to the art of Chinese brush painting, in which fine-tipped brushes are used to create strokes that depict a subject's outward and inner qualities while also revealing the painter's individuality and style.
A highlight of the exhibit is a large scroll painted by Lucille Patterson, who just turned 100.
The free exhibit runs through July 8. An open house with demonstrations will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The arts center is at 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. To learn more, call 972-252-2787.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Travel Industry Management honored leaders in Hawaii Tourism at the Sheraton Waikiki on Wednesday.
Holden Lim, the president of Hospitality Link international, was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Honor, and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman — president and CEO of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association — received the Legacy in Tourism Award.
“This is a school that has trained, educated so many of our leaders in the past, and some, many of them have taken great positions of prominence in the industry,” Hannemann said.
“It’s not about me, it’s about the industry, all coming together.”
On Thursday, state senators will hear testimony and discuss whether to confirm Hannemann as chair of the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s board of directors.
Meanwhile, officials explained the purpose of the 22nd annual “Celebrate a Legacy in Tourism” gala. The event raises money to support future leaders in travel industry management. UH said it raised a record-breaking $517,000 to help support student scholarships.
