Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. She used her personal experience and insights from other travelers to determine the best wine tours in Napa Valley. Cheers!

Sequoia Grove

8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 944-2945

Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings

Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.

Grgich Hills

1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 963-2784

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused

Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Founded in 1977, it has consistently produced stellar wines to be tasted in an equally stellar stone building. Bonus: As of 2006, it uses only estate-grown fruit from its organic, biodynamic, and solar powered winery.

Corison Winery

987 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-0826

Why Guests Love It: Critically Acclaimed Wines, Female Winemaker, Vineyard Views

True trailblazers seem in short supply these days but thankfully Cathy Corison is still here. Year in and year out, she crafts award-winning Cabs from specific vineyard designations. She also produces a stunning Gewürztraminer and Riesling, both of which sing when paired with food. Be sure to snap up what you can because her wines consistently sell out.

401 St Helena Hwy South, St Helena

(707) 967-2626

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Artwork, Female Winemaker, Exceptional Wines

If the whimsical rabbit sculpture isn’t enough to make you stop, the wines most certainly will! Kathryn Hall comes by her craft genetical, having worked in her family’s vineyards north in Mendocino before striking out on her own. And although the Cabs are fabulous, cross the varietal line and taste their Merlots. You’ll be wowed.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-2047

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Cheese & Charcuterie Boards, Age-Worthy Wines

Heitz has been around since 1961 – yes, you read that correctly. Everything about Heitz speaks to tradition, from the vineyard selections to the woodblock-esque labels. It’s worth stocking up here and laying some down to age because Heitz is known to develop beautifully for years.

Freemark Abbey

3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena

(800) 963-9698

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines

Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Sterling Vineyards

1111 W Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga

(800) 726-6136

Why Guests Love It: Breathtaking Views, Tram Rides, Award Winning Wines

Sterling Vineyards unfortunately sustained significant damage during the Glass Fire of 2020 and has since been undergoing reconstruction. The good news for everyone is that it is due to reopen in the Spring of 2023! Sterling has been a longtime favorite because of the stunning views. Plan ahead to book a tour that includes a tram ride to the top of the vista point and sip through their lineup. It’s worth the wait.

Tank Garage Winery

1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga

(707) 942-8265

Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production

Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.

Top Napa Wineries along the Silverado Trail

Silverado Trail runs somewhat parallel to St Helena Highway on the east side of Napa. The two are close enough together to make it very easy to toggle between, but Silverado is decidedly quieter because village centers are found on St Helena Highway.

Chateau Montelena

1429 Tubbs Lane, Calistoga

(707) 942-5105

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Napa History, VIP Service

Chateau Montelena is the perfect start to a day of winetasting. This gorgeous stone chateau is home to some legendary wines, including the Chardonnay that beat out white Burgundies in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Taste through their elegant line up of Cabs or go rogue and try their Riesling – everything is stunning.

Clos Pegase Winery

1060 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga

(707) 942-4981

Why Guests Love It: Sleek Architecture, Quirky Sculptures, Cave Tours

Clos Pegase breaks rank with modern architecture and the quirky “friendship bench” but the wines are no less delightful. With a range of flight options, guests are encouraged to taste through all that Napa has to offer in a relaxing, elegant environment. Be sure to try all of the reds.

Honig Vineyard & Winery

850 Rutherford Rd, Rutherford

(707) 963-4272

Why Guests Love It: Eco Tours, Sustainable Winery, Fabulous Whites

Honig means ‘honey’ in German, which is denoted with the whimsical bees on Honig labels. And, Honig is true to its love of bees by being certified sustainable and solar powered. Book the Eco tour to learn all about Honig’s green practices before tasting through some beautiful wines, including their Sauvignon Blanc.

8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford

(800) 686-6272

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Classic Sparkling Wine, Cheese Pairings

Is it bubbly time yet? Mumm Napa provides the best of French winemaking and Napa views. Guests can choose to taste through the delightful sparkling wines in a variety of settings, from patio seating to terrace tasting with cheese pairings.

8383 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 963-5188

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality

Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. While ZD may be smaller than some of the huge Napa wineries, it is no less impressive and produces rich, luscious wines that manage to maintain perfect balance. Taste through the lineup, or book a tour with sample of library wines.

Quixote Winery

6126 Siverado Trail, Napa

(707) 944-2659

Why Guests Love It: Quirky Atmosphere, Estate Tours, Food & Wine Pairings

And now for something completely different! To experience Quixote Winery is to experience a quirky, carnivalesque atmosphere while tasting through intriguing, small production wines. All fruit sourced from Stags Lead District, their wines sell out quickly so be sure to stock up while you can.

Stags’ Leap Winery

6150 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-5790

Why Guests Love It: Historic Winery, Beautiful Views, Exceptional Service

Stags’ Leap is another legendary Napa winery and is a must for those wanting to taste through the best the valley has to offer. Indulge in a porch tasting to experience the stunning views alongside the stunning wines. And, be sure to grab a bottle of Petite Sirah, which is a perennial favorite among critics.

Clos du Val Winery

5330 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 261-5212

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Views, Creative Events, High End Hospitality

Clos du Val is nestled back among the vines, providing a picturesque experience for visitors. Book a tasting in advance, or check out events like Apéro nights, or sparkling wine brunches. No matter what you try, you’ll love the attention to detail that weaves through both the wines and the estate.

4240 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-2345

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Luxurious Pairings, Exceptional Service

Darioush is sort of like Madonna or Cher in that it needs no other name: Darioush is enough. And, for those that know it, the name Darioush means opulence and grandeur unlike anything else in Napa. Grounded in Persian culture, hospitality is elevated to an art form here. Be sure to reserve the Signature Mezza tasting to try the wines alongside traditional Persian mezze plates.

Judd’s Hill Winery & MicroCrush

2332 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 255-2332

Why Guests Love It: Small Production, Family Owned, Relaxed Environment

Judd’s Hill is an anomaly in Napa because it’s lowkey and very hands on. Still family owned, guests are encouraged to book tastings, pairings, or even play winemaker and blend their own wines! Another charming experience is their annual poetry contest, for which winners receive a 3-liter bottle but the real prize is being part of this 20+ year tradition.

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.

Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

Private Napa Valley Wine Tours

Things to Know

Though private tours of Napa Valley are more common, there are still a handful of companies that offer group tours.

Of the companies listed below, Wine Country Tour Shuttle, Platypus Wine Tours, Napa Valley Wine Country Tours, and Beau Wine Tours & Limo Service visit 4 different wineries, have the capacity to accommodate small groups of 10-12 guests, and are lead by qualified guides.

A picnic lunch is also included in the price of each of these tour. Platypus Tours and Napa Valley Wine Tours also serve a cheese platter and breakfast with mimosas, respectively.

Wine tasting fees are not included in the cost of any of these tours, and usually run about $15 per person at each stop.

Gray Line and Tower Tours, on the other hand, run full coach tours to 3 different wineries. Tasting fees are included in the price of these tours, though lunch is not.

Below the companies are listed in order of price, from cheapest to most expensive.

City Sightseeing

CitySightseeing Tours are classic hop-off, hop-on bus tours that take visitors to several different tourist destinations.

They offer half day and full-day tour of Napa Valley, as well as a combination day tour to both Napa and Muir Woods, known for its towering redwood trees.

The half day and combination tour options visit 2-3 wineries, while the full day tour visits 4. The first wine tasting fee is included in the price of the full and half day tours, but all additional tastings must be paid for separately.

This outfit offers complimentary hotel pick-up from San Francisco.

Cost:

  • Half Day Napa Valley Tour- $74.99 per person, including 1 wine tasting fee
  • Full Day Napa Valley Tour - $99.99 per person, including 1 wine tasting fee
  • Muir Woods and Napa Valley Tour - $124.99 per person, including 2 wine tasting fees

Pick-up/Drop-off: C omplimentary hotel pickup from San Francisco to Napa and Napa to San Francisco.

Reviews:  Tours to Napa Valley with CitySightseeing receive generally positive reviews, with many guests praising the ease of transportation.

The quality of the guided commentary varies depending on the driver, though most visitors find it informative and enjoyable. Some guests had trouble hearing the driver due to a poor PA system on the bus.

Overall, visitors who traveled with CitySightseeing found the experience very enjoyable and straightforward.

TripAdvisor Rating: 3.5 stars.

This is one of the newest tour companies in the Bay Area, and one of their services just so happens to be a day trip to the Napa & Sonoma Valleys.

At 9 hours in length, this is an extensive outing which includes several opportunities to taste wine and learn about how it is made.

Groups are kept at a maximum of 12 persons to make sure that the tour doesn't get too crowded.

A Day in Wine Country

  • $229 per person
  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Includes a trip to Napa Valley.
  • Includes a trip to Sonoma Valley.
  • Includes wine tastings at three wineries.

Although they don't currently have any reviews for this specific tour, Take Walks regularly receives excellent ratings from their customers.

Many guests are impressed with their tour guides, describing them as entertaining and informative.

Wine Country Tour Shuttle

This company offers 2 different wine tours around Napa Valley. The first is with Robert Mondavi Winery and the second is with Castello di Amorosa.

Both include 4 stops at different vineyards, a picnic lunch, and a knowledgeable guide. Of all the group tours included on this list, this company is the most affordable at just $79 and $89 per person.

Wine tasting fees, gratuities, and the entrance fee for visiting Castello di Amorosa ($20) is not included in the price of the tour.

  • Napa Valley Tour with Castello di Amorosa - $79 per person, excluding wine tasting fees
  • Napa Valley Tour with Robert Mondavi Winery - $89 per person, excluding wine tasting fees

Pick-up/Drop-off:

  • Napa Valley Tour with Castello di Amorosa - The Ferry Building, though they will call a taxi company on your behalf to pick you up at your hotel and drop at first winery
  • Napa Valley Tour with Robert Mondavi Winery - Pick-up available from almost any Napa Valley hotel

Reviews:  Reviews are generally very positive, as many guests comment on the impressive knowledge of the guides and the beautiful views seen on the drive.

On rare occasions, guests report having their tours canceled at the last minute, though complaints of this sort are few and far between.

Of their two tours on offer, the Napa Valley Tour with Castello di Amorosa is the most popular.

TripAdvisor Rating: 4.5 stars.

Gray Line Tours

In addition to their many other bus tours, Gray Line also offers a Deluxe Sonoma & Napa Valley Wine Tour packages.

Guests visit 3 different wineries and are given free time to explore and have lunch in Yountville. Unlike many of the other companies, the tasting fees are included in this tour.

However, the 'tour' at each vineyard is limited to a presentation by a representative and wine tasting, rather than of the wine making process itself. Also, this group tour is much larger than most, with capacity for more than 40 persons.

As Gray Line offers to collect guests directly from their hotel in San Francisco, this is a great option for those who aren't staying in Napa and don't feel comfortable traveling their on their own.

Cost:  $91 per person, including tasting fees but excluding lunch

Drop-off/Pick-up:  Pick-up/drop-off from any San Francisco hotel

Reviews:  Reviews of Gray Line's wine tour are generally very positive. Guests praise the knowledgeable drive-guide and the ease by which they were able to visit several wineries from San Francisco to Napa.

Some complain about the lack of intimacy, however, that is inevitably the trade off for such an affordable excursion that also includes wine tasting fees.

TripAdvisor Rating: 4 stars.

Tower Tours

Tower Tours offer a Napa & Sonoma Wine Country which visits 3 different wineries and offers complimentary shuttle pick up from most San Francisco hotels.

Similar to Gray Line Tours, this tour accommodates a large number of people and thus isn't quite as intimate as some of the other companies.

Wine tasting fees at each vineyard is included in the price of the tour, however, lunch is not. After a brief presentation and wine tasting, guests are given 1 hour to explore the winery and complete any purchases of their choosing.

Like Gray Line Tours, the presentation does not include any insight into how the wine is made.

Cost: $91 per person

Drop-off/Pick-up: Complimentary shuttle pickup from most San Francisco hotels.

Reviews:  Reviews of Tower Tours are relatively positive as guests praise the guides and the selection of wineries.

Some comment that they wish there was more information regarding the wine making process, however, this is more of an issue to be taken up with the wineries rather than the tour company.

Overall, guests seem very pleased with this affordable wine tour!

Extranomical Tours

Extranomical Tours offers full day tours to both Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. Their trips include complimentary hotel pickup, a guided tour of San Francisco's wine country, and wine tasting fees at at least 2 different wineries.

Wine country tours can also be combined with other popular tourist destinations such as Muir Woods and  Alcatraz. Lunch is included in the price of some of their tours, so be sure to clarify if this is the case.

San Francisco Wine Lover's Tour

  • From $138 per person
  • 9 hours, departing daily
  • More info and to book .

Muir Woods and Wine Country (Sonoma and Napa Valley

  • From $102 per person
  • More info to book

Wine Lover's Tour and Alcatraz Ticket

  • From $147 per person
  • More info and for reservation

Reviews: Extranomical Tours has a great reputation, boasting 4 ½ star rating on TripAdvisor and a 4-star rating on Yelp.

The handful of negative reviews are mostly centered around scheduling conflicts, however these issues are often difficult to predict, especially considering the heavy traffic coming in and out of San Francisco.

Considering this is the only real complaint, the company is obviously doing pretty well.

Almost every other similar service has received complaints about the bus either being late or broken, so it’s worth noting that Extranomical does not appear to have these problems.

TripAdvisor Rating: 4.5 stars.

Napa Valley Wine Country Tours

This company offer 2 different types of wine tour of Napa Valley -- the first departing from San Francisco and the second departing from Napa.

Each operates daily and visits 4 premium vineyards in Napa Valley, includes a picnic style lunch, and features a knowledgable driver-guide.

The Napa wine tour that departs from San Francisco also includes a "mimosa wine country breakfast", which is served on the bus and features bagels, croissants, fresh fruit, and a mimosa.

Gratuity and wine tasting fees not included in either tour.

  • San Francisco to Wine Country -   $99 per person, plus wine tasting fees.
  • Napa Valley Daily Wine Country - $99 per person, plus wine tasting fees.
  • San Francisco to Wine Country -   Union Square OR Pier 39
  • Napa Valley Daily Wine Country - Pick-up available from almost any Napa Valley hotel

Reviews:  Reviews are also very positive for Napa Valley Wine Tours, as several guests comment on the outstanding customer service and unbeatable quality of guides.

Some guests write: "hands down the best wine tour ever." Though a few reviewers critcized the price of the tour, this company actually offers one of the most competitive priced tours of Napa Valley.

TripAdvisor Rating: 5 stars.

Platypus Wine Tours

Platypus Wine Tours is the top rated wine tour company on TripAdvisor and offers group tours of Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, and North Sonoma.

The Napa Valley tour visits 4 different wineries, dedicating roughly an hour at each one. In addition to a knowledgable guide, the tour also features a picnic lunch, as well as a cheese platter served on the bus.

Groups are limited to 10 persons, ensuring that the experience is always intimate. Expect to pay $10-$15 at each stop for the wine tasting experience, in addition to any bottles you wish to purchase.

Cost: $110 per person, not including wine tasting fees

Pick-up/Drop-off: Platypus Tours will pick up from almost any hotel or inn in Napa Valley. For those taking Napa Valley tours from San Francisco, Platypus Tours dispatches a bus to collect tourists a Vallejo Ferry Terminal.

Tourists simply must go to San Francisco Ferry Marketplace Building, take the ferry to Vallejo Ferry Terminal, and then wait to be collected by the Platypus Tours bus.

Reviews: Platypus Tours has an outstanding reputation, with a 5 star rating on TripAdvisor and several thousand reviews. Former guests comment that "there can't be a better wine tour out there" and ask "is it possible to have too much fun??".

Though complaints are few and far between, some guests felt the tour was overpriced and that the wine tasting tour should have been included in the fee. However, it is very common for all wine tours to exclude the tasting fees in the cost of the tour.

Beau Wine Tours

Though they specialize primarily in private luxury wine tours, they also offers a group tour to Napa Valley.

Guests are brought to 4 different vineyards, are accompanied by a qualified guide, and given champagne and a picnic lunch. The price of the tour does not include the wine tasting fees or any gratuity for the guide.

Drivers typically call tourists prior to the tour to inquire about their wine and vineyard preferences, so that the tour is as customized as possible (though there is no guarantee that the guide will be able to accommodate everyone's wishes).

Cost: $125 per person, not including wine tasting fees.

Pick-up/Drop-off: Tours will pick up from almost any hotel or inn in Napa Valley. For those taking Napa Valley tour from San Francisco, the tour dispatches a bus to collect tourists a Vallejo Ferry Terminal.

Guests simply must go to San Francisco Ferry Marketplace Building, take the ferry to Vallejo Ferry Terminal, and then wait to be collected by the tour bus.

Reviews:  Beau Wine Tours also receive excellent reviews, with many tourists praising the company's outstanding customer service.

Though their group tour is not as popular as their individual tours, there are still several positive reviews from guests who have used their group tour service.

Though individual tours may appear significantly more expensive than any of the group tour offers, they can be a reasonable alternative for those already travelling as a group.

There are several different companies that offer individual tours of Napa Valley. Occasionally there are 'hidden fees' in the form of tax, wine tasting fees, the cost of the fuel, and any other number of things, so be sure to clarify what is included in the cost of the tour.

Squire Livery Tours

Squire Livery Tours markets itself as a luxury wine tour company that offers bespoke, individual tours of Napa Valley.

The company is run by Kent, a Napa Valley native whose knowledge and passion for wine goes nearly unmatched.

Pick-up/Drop-off:  Pick-up available from any accommodation in Napa Valley. Those staying outside of Napa Valley must find their own means of transportation to Napa Valley.

Reviews:  Squire Livery Tours has an outstanding reputation with no ratings below 5 stars on TripAdvisor to date. Customers rave about the knowledge of the guides and the ease of the trip, as Kent and his team organize all of the minute details of the tour.

Many reviewers say that they felt like they had "made a new friend and built a lasting relationship" after a day with their guide. Several guests are return customers who were eager to use Squire Livery Tours again.

TripAdvisor Rating: 5 stars.

In addition to their group tours, they offers several different customizable individual tours of Napa Valley.

They are particularly well known for their individual tours, which receive several positive reviews from guests who have used their group tour service.

Flex Wine Tours

Reviews:  The reviews for this company are excellent, as many former customers vow to never visit Napa without Intimate Wine Tours!

Other guests say "words don't even do it justice with what a great time we had." The odd complaint is very rare and usually describes a very abnormal circumstance.

Napa Your Way

Napa Your Way is a small, family run wine tour company that specializes in trips around Napa Valley. They make a particular effort to bring visitors to smaller, lesser-known wineries rather than those run by large companies.

Guests can also add on a lunch or dinner stop to their tour for additional fees.

Cost:  $80 per hour, plus a remote destination fee of $75 each way. Wine tasting fees not included.

Reviews:  Napa Your Way receives excellent reviews, with many guests praising Brad, the owner and main guide of the company, for being so knowledgable and for having the ability to "make small miracles happen."

This company truly specializes in making each tour as unique and personal as possible, and all of their 5 star reviews are evidence of that success!

  • Confirm what exactly is included in the cost and what is not. For example, the price of group tours often does not include tasting fees, and the price of individual tours often does not include the cost of gas. It is important to know the approximate cost of the day so that guests can plan accordingly.
  • Don't forget ID! The last thing you want is to pay for a wine tour and then not be able to drink the wine!
  • Do your research beforehand. Though some group tours have a set list of wineries that they visit, some group tours and all individual tours will try to accommodate any requests made by the guests. If there is a particular winery you want to visit, read up on it beforehand and ask your guide if it could be done.

This tends to be very social, yet civilized tour. You’ll board a small-group shuttle,  usually with eight to twelve wine-interested adventurers on board visiting an ever-changing selection of smaller, intimate wineries – ideal for individual travelers, couples and small groups of friendly people. Your guide/driver will point out notable landmarks and wineries along the way. You’ll tour a winery, take in some extraordinary views of Napa Valley, maybe stroll through the vines, get a flavor of wine country history, hear stories and learn about wine making. This is not a boilerplate tour – it’s different every day, it’s informative and it’s fun!

The Napa Valley Join-In Wine Tour price is $119 per guest ($129 Fridays, $139 Saturdays), and is offered every day, subject to availability. Tasting fees at the wineries are not included and are charged extra by the wineries. These fees typically run about $20-$25 per person, per winery. All Join-In Wine Tours include a tasty picnic lunch served by your tour guide/driver on the grounds of one of the wineries.  Our tours usually last from about 10:30am to about 5:00pm. Pick-up is from local Napa-area hotels, rentals and from selected meeting spots for those driving in for the day.

Here is an example of a recent Napa Wine Tour Itinerary: Merryvale, Tedeschi, and Hans Fahden. We customize all of our tours and the wineries change each day. Itineraries do vary depending on availability.

Wine Tasting Fees

Tasting fees at the wineries are not included and are charged extra by the wineries, compensating them for the wine they pour for guests. These fees typically run about $20-$25 per person, per winery. Some tasting fees can be higher in the region, but Platypus works hard to cultivate relationships with our winery partners in order to keep the fees at an average of $20-$25 per person, per winery. Because of our partnerships, almost any of the wineries on our Join-In Tours will often waive a tasting fee with a bottle purchase or wine club membership.

If you have any additional questions about wine tasting fees, please don’t hesitate to call us at  (707) 253-2723   or see our  Wine Tasting Fees FAQs  page.

Napa Valley Wine Tasting Tips

Make a reservation.

It's always a good idea to schedule your appointments well in advance of your visit because some of the more popular wineries  and tasting rooms fill up their reservations weeks in advance .

Some wineries are so small or off-the-beaten-track that they need to know when you are coming so someone will be there to greet you.

Other wineries have permit restrictions that limit the number of guests that can visit each day.

Many wineries have sit-down tastings that start and end at specific times .

Wine Tasting at Napa Valley winery

Should I tip?

The short answer is yes. While tasting rooms charge a fee for the experience, your host will be spending time with you to explain what you're drinking and be available to answer any questions you might have about the wine and the winery, or even about Napa Valley in general. Even if you bought a bottle of wine, your host will appreciate a tip for the service, especially if you had a great experience.

How much do you tip at wineries?

  • Stand-up bar tasting : Recommended $10 – $15 per couple.
  • Seated tasting : Recommended $15 – $20 per couple.
  • Boutique wineries tasting : Recommended $20+ per couple.
  • Private tours & VIP experiences : Recommended $20+ per couple.
  • Large groups & Bachelorette parties : Recommended 20% of the total winery cost.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees vary and there is no typical fee for a wine tasting – the average cost of a basic wine tasting is about $40 in Napa Valley. They can be as low as $20 and go as high as $200 or more for an elevated experience that might include a tour, lunch, class, or seminar. Depending on the winery and activity, most wineries package experiences into a flat fee with the tasting.

Some wineries will even waive tasting fees when purchasing bottles of wine so feel free to ask the winery or tasting room when you visit what their policy is around tastings and bottle purchases.

Additional Tips

How many wine tastings can we do in one day?

We recommend 2 or 3 winery visits , but not more than that as most experiences take a minimum of 90 minutes and there is travel time in between. You can also hire a driver or tour company to drive you to the wineries, and they can even plan your day of tastings.

Should I purchase bottles of wine at a tasting?

If you enjoy the wine you tasted and want to show your support, buy some bottles or sign up for a wine club. Some wineries and tasting rooms have a specific policy about waiving the tasting fee when a particular amount of wine is purchased. Many wine clubs offer perks like complimentary tastings, discounts, and exclusive invitations to educational tastings and seminars.

Can I wear perfume or cologne to a winery?

It's best to avoid too much perfume or cologne as it can mask the aroma of the wine, and smell is important to wine tasting. Scents can ruin the tasting experience for everyone within nose-shot.

Can I wear jeans to a winery?

Yes! Jeans are acceptable year-round – we call it wine country casual (for women — sundresses, blouses and skirts, nice jeans, wedges, sandals, etc.; for men – golf shirts, khaki pants, nice jeans, dressier shorts, stylish sneakers, boat shoes, etc.).

A more upscale winery might call for darker denim, and be sure to dress in layers as many winery experiences take place outdoors and tours often take guests through wine caves and chilled cellar areas.

Know How to Taste Wine

  • See — Observe the color and clarity of the wine. Color can be affected by age, varietal and barrel process.
  • Swirl — Lightly twirl the stem of the glass, keeping the bottom of the glass on the table if you are worried about spilling. This allows some oxygen into the wine that will help its aromas open up.
  • Sniff — Hold the glass a few inches from your nose, then let your nose drop into the glass. Older wines often have nuanced, subtle aromas that are difficult to identify. Don't worry if you can't always recognize an aroma.
  • Sip — Take a sip and let it linger in your mouth. Roll the wine around in your mouth, exposing it to all of your taste buds.
  • Spit — Spit into a "dump bucket" if you don't want to get inebriated.

Swirling Red Wine Glass

Frequently Asked Questions

Read them below.

No, tasting fees are different at each winery and are not included. However, due to the limited tasting space during the Covid-19 pandemic, you will be charged a tasting fee if you want to join the group for the tasting. If you decide not to pay the tasting fee you will not be allowed in the winery for the safety of those that are tasting. The wineries we have selected in most cases offer a special discounted tasting fee. They provide a dedicated staff to host us and offer some of their best wines for our guests. They will explain the varietals and winemaking techniques and tell us about the history of the winery. We usually taste 4 different wines at each stop. Most of our partner wineries also accept credit cards but paying the tasting fees in cash is preferred and quicker when you want to check out. Tasting fees will be collected at each stop.

The tasting fees range from $25 to $50 per person.

Winery stops on our tours may vary. We are continuously rotating our winery partners .

Well, it’s both! Our wine trolley is a hand-built replica of a California street cable car, like the ones used in San Francisco from the late 1890s to the early 1930s. Every detail, from the all-wooden carriage to the solid brass bell, is an authentic feature right off the original blueprints. However, the simplistic DMV description classifies motorized vehicles made to “look” like a streetcar as “trolleys.”

The catered lunch is made from the freshest ingredients available and includes sandwiches or pizza, fresh garden salads featuring the flavors of the season, and freshly baked desserts. We dine at one of the wineries, tasting rooms, or at an outdoor vineyard patio.

The Napa Valley Wine Trolley is an open-air cable car, so we recommend dressing in layers as mornings and evenings can be chilly, and at times, breezy. We recommend casual dress, with comfortable shoes as sandals and flip-flops are not recommended.

You must be at least 21 years or older to take this tour. Guests who are found to be underage at the time of boarding will be turned away and no refunds will be made. A valid ID will be required when you board.

If you are not staying at one of our hotel partners, please meet us in front of the parking lot at the Oxbow Public Market at 10 am at 644 1st street in Napa. Parking is available in the southeast corner of the market’s parking lot.

No, we prefer to leave it up to our guests to decide how much to tip our tour guides. As a guide, 15-20% tips are typical for most satisfied guests.

The Fees to Taste Wine in Napa Valley

napa valley wine tours tasting fees included

We established the Napa Valley Wine Tasting Fee Index in 2014. Each year we see an increase in what it costs a person to taste wine in the Napa Valley. Because of the COVID pandemic, we are not keeping an Index for the 2021 season. Tasting fees are in a fluid state. Walk-in tastings are almost a thing of the past. Most wineries require reservations. This means fewer visitors to the tasting room. That translates to higher tasting fees. Instead of standard tastings, wineries have more elaborate wine tasting along with food pairings.

Napa Valley Tasting Room Index 2020

We created the Napa Valley Tasting Fee Index in 2014 . Our Wine Country Getaways’ Website contains useful planning information for those who wish to visit the wine country. Why not give these folks an idea of what it will cost to taste wine in the Napa Valley.

There was once a time when wineries in the Napa Valley did not charge visitors for sampling wine. They were happy to show off their wines, hoping visitors would buy a few bottles. Then the mobs came to the Napa Valley, and the wineries could not afford to give their wine away. Tasting fees became the norm.

For the Index, we are using ten wineries along Highway 29. Each of these wineries welcomes visitors without a reservation or appointment. Most wineries have different levels of tasting choices. For the Index, we are using the basic, or least expensive, tasting that the winery offers to visitors. Here they are as of February 22, 2020.

  • Alpha Omega – $50
  • Beaulieu Vineyards – $30
  • Beringer Wines – $25
  • Grgich Hills – $ 40
  • Louis Martini – $30
  • Peju Province – $40
  • Provenance – $30
  • Pestoni Family Estate – $25
  • Sequoia Grove – $30
  • Whitehall Lane – $25

Many wineries in the Napa Valley have optional wine tasting experiences beyond the basic tasting. Wine and food pairings seem to be a favorite for many visitors. Then there are the tour-and-tasting packages. Some wineries offer a tasting of their Library or Reserve wines. These tasting choices are expensive. Here a few examples.

  • Beaulieu Vineyards – George De Latour Legacy Tour and Tasting – $125 per person
  • Louis Martini – Underground Cellar – wine and food pairing with Chef Jeffery Russell, 3 hours in duration – $250 per person
  • Alpha Omega – Library tasting of 4 wines – $75 per person
  • Grgich Hills – Wine and Cheese with 4 wines and a host – $50 per person
  • Beringer – Taste of Beringer Tour, one hour – $65 per person
  • Whitehall Lane – Cabernet Flight – $65 per person

The average tasting room fee is $32.50 per person in our unofficial survey of what it costs to taste wine in the Napa Valley. Back in 2014, when we first began the Napa Valley Tasting Fee Index, the average cost of a basic tasting was $18.50. That very much sums up how the Napa Valley wine scene has changed in the last several years. It has become a rich person’s paradise.

Considering the lack of steering capacities, your point of arrival will be up to the whims of the wind and the hot air balloon. Nevertheless, once you're back on the ground you'll be transported to the winery for a tasting and optional guided tour. Tie the day together by sipping on top Rioja wines, made with native tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, graciano, macabeo, and malvasia grape varieties.

2. VR winery visit at Campo alla Sughera (Bolgheri, Italy)

Bolgheri is famous in Tuscany for being home to the region's prestigious Super Tuscan wines, primarily made with international rather than regional grape varieties. Now, Campo alla Sughera is introducing an immersive virtual reality experience that goes beyond viticultural innovation. Whereas some wineries offer the chance to take part in the laborious harvest, this tour provides insider knowledge without the backbreaking work.

Simply don a VR visor and witness the many stages of a vineyard and winery during harvest time, from hand-picking the juicy grapes on the vines to transferring them to the tanks in the cellar. Additionally, guests will be guided through the physical winery, cellar, and vineyards to see where the magic truly takes place. Finally, the tour ends with a tasting that includes four of Campo alla Sughera's top wines made with varieties like cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot, offering visitors a peak experience from start to finish.

3. Icewine experience at Inniskillin (Niagara, Canada)

Although it's not exclusive to Canada, the country's viticultural repertoire is commonly associated with icewine. In Niagara, Ontario, Inniskillin is arguably responsible for much of this international clout, winning a top award at Vinexpo in Bordeaux, France in 1991. Since, the winery continues to produce exceptional icewine (and plenty of other styles as well), offering an icewine experience for guests who want to take a closer look at the chilly process.

To understand everything you need to know about icewine , taste a flight of three wines, sampling them in assorted glasses to savor the elements that make each one distinct. Sparkling icewine and assorted grape varieties provide a broader tasting experience for novices and aficionados alike. Additionally, a few tasty morsels accompany the wine samples, highlighting some of the many ways of pairing icewine. Considering the premium price of a bottle of icewine, partaking in this tour is a valuable way to discover what you love most about this unique style.

4. Underground cellar labyrinth at Cricova Winery (Moldova)

Anyone with a fear of confined spaces might want to skip out on Cricova Winery's underground cellar labyrinth tour. The Moldovan winery is home to what it describes as a "subterranean city" with streets holding endless rows of wine casks. Designed following extensive limestone excavation (to build a neighboring city), the roads are almost 300 feet below ground, making it all the more exciting to venture down during the guided tour. The maze of lanes stretches for around 75 miles, holding over one million wine bottles.

The tour makes its way through segments of the route by transporting guests on a small train and can be combined with a wine-tasting flight in one of the underground tasting rooms. You might even catch sight of exclusive wine collections belonging to Putin and other political figures. Cricova is known for its traditional method of sparkling wine, but you can also taste wines made with cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and muscat.

5. Blend your own wine at d'Arenberg (McLaren Vale, Australia)

A little work never hurt. At d'Arenberg in McLaren Vale, South Australia, winery guests get to step into the role of a winemaker at The Blending Bench. The real heavy lifting is done for you ahead of time, as the grapes have already been harvested, pressed, and fermented. Instead, you'll be presented with three samples of shiraz wine to blend at your discretion. McLaren Vale is home to some of the top shiraz vines in Australia, so you'll be working with the best.

Aside from highlighting the nuances of the different base wines, the process will finetune your senses and assist you in identifying the qualities you prefer in your wine. There's plenty of sipping involved as you hone in on the individual characteristics. You won't be going home empty-handed, either. Once you've completed your custom blend, it's transferred to a 750-milliliter bottle that you can take home to enjoy at your leisure. If you want to expand on this experience, pair it with an eight-course dinner with wine at the on-site restaurant.

6. Underwater cellar dive at Edivo Vina (Hrvatska, Croatia)

Scuba diving and wine don't usually go hand in hand, but at Edivo Vina in Hrvatska, Croatia, an underwater cellar awaits exploration. The winery doesn't age all of its wine in the Adriatic Sea, but a selection of  Croatian coral wine is aged in the watery depths . Made with local Croatian grapes, the wine is transferred to glass bottles and stored in amphora vessels before being submerged in steel cages around 60-80 feet below the surface and nestled in a shipwreck. The cool, stable climate and tranquil setting appear to be optimal for the wine's maturation process.

Following a short boat ride to the site, certified divers can venture down to the cellar with a PADI instructor. All of the required equipment is available for rent, making it a fun way to dive and see an underwater winery on the same tour. Following the dive, a mixed selection of wines (aged above and below water) is available for tasting along with light snacks at Edivo Wine Bar.

7. Art museum tasting at Hess Persson Estates (Napa, California)

For many oenophiles, wine is an art, so it makes sense to combine a sensory tasting experience with a visual arts one. At Hess Person Estates in Napa Valley, the two come together seamlessly with the on-site art gallery. Art lovers can tour the Hess Collection Contemporary Art Museum with the director of art, who spent dozens of years familiarizing himself with the pieces alongside the founder. Engage with the dynamic works in a small group as you explore the various meanings and sensations that arise.

Once the visual arts tour is complete, you will be treated to an educational wine-tasting experience with one of the viticultural experts. With vineyards located on Mount Veeder and surrounding areas, the wines are all infused with the complexities and nuances of the varied terrains. Try top-tier cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and chardonnay, among other well-executed classic varieties.

8. Dog hike and tasting at Kunde Family Winery (Sonoma, California)

If you like to bring your four-legged bestie everywhere you go, then schedule a visit to Kunde Family Winery. Located in Sonoma, California, the fifth-generation family-owned winery is the perfect place for a hike followed by wine tasting. It's worth noting the hike lasts around four hours and takes you through a valley and into the Mayacamas Mountain range, so skip the winery-chic fashion and lace up your hiking boots. Described as "moderately strenuous," you'll want to ensure your dog is up for the activity, too.

Nevertheless, the beautiful views make the effort well worth it, and the included wine tasting and lunch provide you with plenty of sustenance to refuel after the hike. Options like viognier, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot, syrah, and zinfandel are just some of the varieties you can pair with your meal. Aside from working out your body, you'll also work out your mind as you learn about the viticultural and winemaking practices in the vineyards and cellar. Dog lovers will be pleased to know that part of the tour proceeds are allocated to local dog rescue projects.

9. Trek with llamas at Divine Llama Vineyards (East Bend, North Carolina)

If you don't have a dog to bring to your winery outing, consider heading to Divine Llama Vineyards in East Bend, North Carolina. The farm is home to the largest population of llamas in the Southeast, making it an excellent spot to better acquaint yourself with the furry animals. The tour consists of about two hours of hiking in mixed terrain, passing forests, rolling hills, and a creek. You'll be hiking with llamas in tow, with opportunities to feed them and snap some pictures to commemorate the moment.

The hike finishes back at the winery where you'll get to sample the wines. Some classic varieties like merlot and cabernet franc are featured, as well as hybrid wine grapes that are better suited for the climate  and other fruits like blackberries and peaches. The winery regularly hosts local food trucks with assorted bites, or feel free to pack a picnic and make a day out of your visit to Divine Llama Vineyards.

10. Tasting in a bunker at Château Siran (Bordeaux, France)

You might associate Bordeaux, France, with some of the most prestigious wineries in the world, but it's also the location of an anti-atomic bunker built during the Cold War that now stores tens of thousands of bottles dating as far back as the early 1900s. At Château Siran, a family-owned winery in the Margaux appellation, visitors can partake in a vertical tasting of three of the winery's vintages in an underground bunker. For escape room enthusiasts, an alternate tour offers an "escape game" experience in the bunker, highlighting its armor-like characteristics.

Château Siran wines consist of a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot. The latter is often featured in smaller quantities in Bordeaux, but its notable presence here adds an edge to the Siran blend. A vertical tasting allows guests to taste the evolution of the wine over the years, adding a historical layer to the tour that mirrors the setting. If you tend to feel claustrophobic in enclosed areas, skip the underground visit and savor the wines in the tasting room.

11. Horseback ride and tasting at Tenuta Torciano (Tuscany, Italy)

Natural landscapes and wineries go hand in hand, so it's no surprise that many vineyard tours take advantage of the scenery. At Tenuta Torciano in Tuscany, guests can go horseback riding in the surrounding hills of the Chianti region. Located close to the medieval town of San Gimignano, the excursion is the perfect outing for wine, nature, and history aficionados. The ride lasts about an hour, allowing visitors to experience the serene backdrop of the vineyards.

After dismounting, guests are provided with wine samples and Tuscan appetizers as they learn about the various facets of local winemaking. The Italian geographical region is most known for the sangiovese grape, and at Tenuta Torciano you can taste it in various DOCG wines such as Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Morellino di Scansano. Super Tuscan blends made with international grapes like cabernet sauvignon and merlot are available as well, along with the local white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG. A classic wine and food pairing — including charcuterie, cheese, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar — ensures both foodies and oenophiles will find something they love.

12. Most Instagrammable wine tour at Trius Winery (Niagara, Canada)

At Trius Winery in Niagara, Ontario, wine lovers can embark on an experience touted as "the most Intagrammable winery tour on the planet." Granted, an existing interest in Instagram and a perfectly curated design and setting will boost your overall enjoyment of the visit, but it's not a prerequisite.

#TheTriusTour takes winery-goers through an art installation paired with wine samples. Taste the rosé, made with gamay and syrah grapes, in the floral Rosé Lounge overlooking the vineyards. Then, make your way to the Sparkling House, where you can sit in a swing, made to mimic the cage on the cork of a bottle of bubbly. Don't miss out on the Bubble Tub as you sip on the assorted selection of traditional method sparkling wines and finish the tour at the classy Brut Bar. It's not just a photo-op either; guides are available to answer any questions regarding winemaking and the wines, rounding out the Canadian winery experience from start to finish.

13. Eco wine safari at Avondale Wine (Paarl, South Africa)

South Africa is a hot spot for safari tourism, and at Avondale Wine in Paarl, visitors can take part in a different spin on the classic. Here, guests can enjoy a leisurely tour of the vineyards from the comfort of a tractor-drawn cart during the Eco Wine Safari. After sipping on a glass of MCC (Methode Cap Classique), South Africa's premium traditional method sparkling wine, climb on board to explore the vineyards as you learn about the viticultural practices at Avondale Wine. Taste a range of wines within steps of the vines that grew the fruit for a close-up look at the interaction between wine and its terroir.

Continue the tour in the cellars, where you'll see Avondale's gravity-flow method for transferring wine to underground tanks. Upon returning to the Tasting Gallery, pick up a bottle of your favorite sample or try something new from the selection, which includes grape varieties such as chenin blanc, viognier, roussanne, grenache, syrah, and plenty more. The winery also features a changing art exhibit, providing guests with a full spectrum of experiences during the tour.

14. Helicopter tour at Seppeltsfield Wines (Barossa, Australia)

If you want to experience a winery from up above, a helicopter is the most efficient mode of transport. At Seppeltsfield Winery in Australia's Barossa Valley, guests can hop on a helicopter ride and survey the vineyards from the sky. Depending on the tour you book, you'll fly for about half an hour, overseeing the vines and surrounding areas as you take in the valley's natural wonders complete with rolling hills and palm trees. Considering its proximity to other wineries, you'll get your fill of bird's-eye vineyard views.

Once you're back at the winery, make your way to the tasting room to sample a flight of wines. Seppeltsfield grows a wide range of varieties, including white grapes like riesling and vermentino and red grapes like Nero d'Avola, grenache, and shiraz — the darling of Barossa. While you're on-site, take advantage of the multitude of ongoing projects at the estate, including a cooperage, a craft and design studio gallery, and a soap factory making raw soap and skin products. With so much to do, you might as well stay the night at The Lodge at Seppeltsfield to make the most of it.

The Wine World Rediscovers Walla Walla

A new winery is drawing the wine world’s attention back to the Walla Walla Valley, in the heart of Washington State's grape-growing region.

The curiosity stems from the vineyard’s co-founder, Doug Frost — one of only a handful of people in the world to hold both the titles of Master of Wine and Master Sommelier. After decades as an internationally renowned wine consultant, the Oregon native has chosen to return home to the Pacific Northwest for the culmination of his career.

With the opening of Echolands — in partnership with Doug Bergman, a well-known conservationist and wine entrepreneur, his final act seems to be a vine-filled, 344-acre love letter to the terroir of Walla Walla , known for its big, bold reds.

Four hours drive from Seattle and Portland , Walla Walla is a favorite weekend road trip destination. Ready to be discovered are trendy hotels, farm-to-table restaurants, vineyard resorts, tasting rooms, and more than 120 wineries. If Bordeaux is out of the picture this year, Walla Walla is ready to welcome you.

Walla Walla’s Award-Winning Wine Scene

An old farm town, Walla Walla (which means many waters) is a lush oasis fed by the Walla Walla River and its tributaries on the edge of sandy desert dunes and the rolling Blue Mountains. In the '70s, vintners discovered its high-quality soil and excellent growing conditions for reds like cabernet sauvignon, syrah, and merlot. By 1982, Leonetti Cellar's 1978 Walla Walla cabernet sauvignon won the Wine & Spirits Magazine championship, the first in the area to do so.

Cut to 2022, and USA Today named Walla Walla America’s Best Wine Region for the 3rd consecutive year. It has since dipped to seven . However, 12 Walla Walla vineyards took home high honors at the Great Northwest Wine Awards this year.

Walla Walla shares a latitude similar to Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, where many of its grapes originated. But its wine’s luscious balance of dark, fruity flavors and minerals has local origins.

The area contains a complex variety of four different soils and has altitudes ranging from 400 to 2,000 feet above sea level with many microclimates. Rainfall amounts, though generally sparse, fluctuate greatly between small geographic regions, producing a wide variety of wine grapes.

Visiting Walla Walla

One-fourth of the Walla Walla Valley lies in Oregon. Even though this is red wine country, it is also home to a few boisterous and expected whites, like chardonnay and riesling.

This variety may sound awesome when you're signing up for a wine subscription, but daunting when organizing a visit. Like California’s Napa Valley, Walla Walla offers a variety of award-winning wines plus picturesque settings and plenty to do.

Golf courses dot the landscape, and in 2023, Golf Digest added Wine Valley Golf Club to its list of 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. There's also hiking, mountain biking, river activities, and fresh local cuisine to customize itineraries. Yet, by far, wine is Walla Walla’s most popular attraction.

Local transportation companies offer private guided or group tours. Travelers can also work with hotels and tasting rooms to arrange taxis. Cell service is unpredictable, making it risky to rely on ride-sharing apps.

Most wineries in Walla Walla outside the downtown core have switched to a reservation-only model for wine tastings. Derek Carlson, who has been visiting the region for over a decade, notes, “This allows for a more intimate experience at the wineries and a chance to talk with the servers and winemakers, which can be a great way to get a feel for the local wines and terroirs.”

Travelers tend to stay one or two nights. According to the Walla Walla Tourism Board, about 80% return more than once. March, April, and May have the fewest crowds and the greenest scenery. Check out Spring Release Weekend in early May, when wineries open their doors to new vintages.

Fall is also less busy than summer but slightly more crowded than spring. At the Harvest Festival in mid-October, wineries release new vintages alongside fresh seasonal veggies like squash, apples, and sweet onions from local restaurants and farms.

There's plenty of action in the summer, from wine and music festivals to wine and movie nights, though tasting rooms get busy, and the weather is extremely hot. Winter is a quieter time, popular for couples seeking a romantic getaway.

Boutique Hotels and Vineyard Stays

Walla Walla has evolved from a town of roadside motels or run-down historic hotels to a valley of boutique hotels and vineyard resorts.

The change began in 2001 when the seminal Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center, built in 1935 in downtown Walla Walla, first underwent a $35-million modernization project, opening up walkable wine-tasting rooms to a new set of travelers. In April 2024, the hotel completed another upgrade to its rooms, lobby, and, notably, its restaurant, Marc. A few steps away, owners of art-driven boutique hotels opened The Lark (Bozeman, Montana), and The Wren (Missoula, Montana) transformed an old Red Lion Inn into The Finch in 2019.

First welcoming guests in 2000, Abeja Winery and Inn has won accolades from travelers for its scenic setting in the Eastern district's countryside, fully restored early 20th century cottages and farmhouse, and award-winning wines. Travelers looking for ultimate comfort turn to resorts like Eritage, which opened in 2019 with a menu of activities and ten luxury countryside suites overlooking fields of undulating vintage.

Yellowhawk has been producing wine in the region since the late ‘90s, and is the region’s only dedicated sparkling wine producer. In 2021, they began offering luxe accommodations on its sweeping 84-acre hilltop campus in Walla Walla's South District. Visitors can book a mansion with a chef's kitchen, boardroom, and private movie theater astride fields of growing grapes.

Walla Walla’s Celebrity Connections

Frost may be the most credentialed person to launch a winery in Walla Walla, but he isn't the only famous person with local ties to set up shop as a vintner in this region.

In 2005, Kyle MacLachlan, from neighboring Yakima Valley, famed for his roles in Twin Peaks and Dune, founded Pursued by Bear Winery. Hometown football hero Drew Blesdoe, best known as quarterback for the New England Patriots in the '90s, opened Doubleback Winery with Chris Figgins of Leonetti Cellars in 2008.

Stephen Amell, famous for his role as Green Arrow on The CW TV show Arrow, co-founded Nocking Point Wines in 2013 with his friend, Walla Walla native Andrew Harding. Grammy-winner and Seattle suburb native Brandi Carlile, along with her wife Catherine and friends Jeri and Amy Andrews, introduced XOBC Cellars in 2021 with a mission to raise awareness for social causes. Former wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, Sydney Rice, opened The Dossier Wine Collective in downtown Walla Walla in 2021.

Echolands Is an Immediate Must-Do

In 2019, Frost first decided to build Echolands in the far Eastside District along Mill Creek, a direct tributary from the Blue Mountains. Now, it is the highest-elevation winery in Washington and produces a range of new Washington vintages that few have sipped before. Echolands' first releases include cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, grenache, grenache blanc, and cinsaut.

Its tasting room is a welcome destination to try them all. The open design features warm woods, cozy couches, and panoramic views of vineyards drifting into gently flowing mountains that stretch out across the horizon.

Things to do | 6 great bay area camping adventures — including pup-friendly backpacking and yurt glamping too, from napa to the santa cruz mountains, these spots offer abundant outdoor overnight fun..

napa valley wine tours tasting fees included

Trawl the National Parks Service’s camping reservation system, recreation.gov , or the State Parks’ reservecalifornia.com for campsites of any kind — tent, trailer, RV or cabin — in Point Reyes, Big Sur and other popular spots, and it’s not uncommon to see every weekend sold out months ahead. It’s reached such a point that in December, California State Parks announced it was dropping traditional reservations for Mount Tamalpais’ popular Steep Ravine cabins and piloting a lottery system instead.

But don’t give up on planning a great summer outing yet. The truth is, there are a ton of other amazing overnight opportunities around the Bay Area, from glamping in a Calistoga yurt in Wine Country to escapist backpacking on Angel Island. We also scouted out what may be the only dog-friendly backpacking opportunity in the region without having to schlep to a national forest (psst, it’s in Antioch).

Here are six fantastic Bay Area camping options to explore that include state, county, city and regional parks and some private campground options, too. Some boast wilderness access, while others enjoy proximity to more urbane regional draws, like wine tasting — and they’re all within an hour or two of home. Consider it a sampling for adventures of all kinds, now and in the future.

Backpacking on Angel Island

Panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay are among the perks of camping at Angel Island State Park. (Kate Bradshaw/Bay Area News Group)

Angel Island offers one of the best overnight escapes right in the middle of the Bay. Campsites, which must be reserved through the California State Parks system , are in high demand, so patience is required – weeknights tend to have greater availability — but the wait is worth it.

Load up your backpacking gear, then board the Angel Island ferry in Tiburon. Once you arrive at the island, snag a snack at the Ayala Cove Cafe before embarking on the 1.5 to 2-mile hike from the ferry station to the campsites.

This is a perfect backpacking outing for taking friends or family members who might be new to the activity – or, in my case, a friend who is very scared of bears. There’s plenty of wildlife, but there are no bears on Angel Island!

Learn about the island’s history as an immigration station, quarantine location and army fort as you explore the island, where eerie, abandoned buildings offer a glimpse of the past. The Angel Island Immigration Museum at China Cove is particularly informative, as it describes the period from 1910 to 1940 when the island became known as the Ellis Island of the West and was used to enforce laws such as the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Traipse the island’s perimeter trail or hike to the top of Mount Livermore for panoramic views of the entire Bay. After the last ferry departs for the mainland, it will feel like you’ve got the island to yourself.

Details: There are reservation-only tent camping sites ($30 per night, no dogs) in four locations on the island, with water and pit toilets nearby. Find details at parks.ca.gov. Board the Angel Island Ferry ($6-$18) at 21 Main St. in Tiburon; https://angelislandferry.com .

Yurt camping at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

Yurts at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park offer more rustic than rugged overnight accommodations in Calistoga. (Kate Bradshaw/Bay Area News Group)

Did you know you can stay somewhere amazing near Napa Valley for under $100 a night? Napa may get flak for its spendy resorts and hotels, but a yurt stay at Calistoga’s Bothe-Napa Valley State Park makes for an economical – and beautiful – way to enjoy a wine country weekend without breaking the bank. At $80 a night, the yurts at the state park provide warmth, shelter and a bed, with shared, but pristine showers and toilets, but it’s BYO light and linens.

The park also offers traditional campsites ($43, no hook-ups) and cabins ($125 and up) and a pool that will be open on weekend afternoons during the summer.

“It’s a great place in wine country where you can camp, go get a bottle of wine and not have to pay an arm and a leg,” says Jay Jessen, park steward assistant.

The park’s location midway between St. Helena and Calistoga puts it temptingly near wine country landmarks such as Castello di Amorosa and Sterling Vineyards . There are beautiful hiking trails on-site, and the Petrified Forest is a short drive away, where you can venture out on a self-guided tour to see 3.4-million-year-old petrified redwoods. Jessen also recommends visiting the nearby Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park , which is home to a water-powered grist mill used to grind corn and wheat into meal and flour.

Need more itinerary inspiration? Napa’s Croccante Pizza makes a great stop for Detroit-style pizza on your way to Calistoga. In the morning, pick up coffee and an apple turnover at Calistoga’s Bella Bakery   before heading to the trailhead to tackle Mount St. Helena . Then refuel with a post-hike sandwich from Napa’s Contimo Provisions .

Details: Find Bothe-Napa Valley State Park at 3801 St. Helena Highway in Calistoga. Yurts are $80 per night. Dogs are allowed in some areas of the park but not on trails. Find more details at parks.ca.gov/ .

Camping at The Ranch at Cross Road

Curious goats eye a camper staying at Hipcamp in Livermore, Calif., Saturday, April 13, 2024. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

This privately-owned campground is located in the heart of Livermore’s wine country and available for reservations via Hipcamp . It’s also an organic farm with pens of ducks and goats – so farm animal fans (and parents) take note.

Each of the 10 campsites ($55) provides everything you’ll need for a tent or RV-based outing with shared showers and flush-toilets housed in a stylish shed near a communal barbecue area.

Nearby amenities include the Purple Orchid , a wine country resort and spa across the street, and plenty of eating and drinking options downtown. Pick up a coffee and hot waffles at Story Coffee  or a beer from First Street Alehouse.

Looking for a more nature-heavy weekend? Head to Del Valle Regional Park , where you can rent a boat, go fishing or explore the park’s abundant – albeit steep – hiking trails, like the 4.4-mile East Shore Loop . (Del Valle also offers camping options; go to reserveamerica.com for more information.)

A fire pit overlooks the farm buildings at Livermore's Ranch at Cross Road, a private campground that can be reserved through Hipcamp, in Livermore, Calif., Saturday, April 13, 2024. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

Details: The Livermore ranch is located at 4779 Cross Road; note that you’ll need to get a key code from the host to enter the property. Each campsite is $55 per night, and they’re dog-friendly, as long as Fido is comfortable around farm animals; hipcamp.com .

Backpacking at Black Diamond Mines Regional Park

Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve offers dog-friendly backpacking in Antioch, which earned it two thumbs up from the author. (Courtesy Gennady Sheyner)

Getting a reservation at this East Bay Regional Preserve in Antioch may be the hardest part, but not for the reason you think. The park can host 20 people at a time in the backcountry, but you’ll have to call an actual phone number to place a reservation. That’s a tall order for those of us who are telephonically awkward or trying to coordinate an outing with multiple parties.

Still, it’s well worth it, because this is one of the only dog-friendly backpacking spots in the Bay.

During the summer, the hills can be sweltering as you hike the 3 miles to your campsite, but a gentle breeze from the Delta helps. Cell signal is iffy out here so make sure you pre-download any digital maps ahead of time.

Even on a summer Saturday night, it was easy to find solitude here. And as a bonus, the outhouse was surprisingly well-maintained and looked like its interior had recently received a fresh coat of paint. Note: Make sure to bring lots of water and be aware of snake activity, particularly in the spring and summer.

The park offers guided tours of its Coal Mine Experience and the Hazel Atlas Mine on weekends beginning May 18, so if you time your trip just right — and make reservations — you can learn more about the region’s mining history.

Details: Find the Black Diamond Mine Regional Preserve at 5175 Somersville Road in Antioch. Fees are $5 per person per night, with extra fees for parking and tours; ebparks.org/parks/black-diamond.

Camping at Foothills Nature Preserve

Towle campground at Foothills Nature Preserve in Los Altos Hills offers a surprisingly remote overnight escape not far from Palo Alto. (Kate Bradshaw/Bay Area News Group)

A 1,400-acre park that until December 2020 was for Palo Alto residents and their guests only, this nature preserve is a newer-to-many-of-us gem nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in Los Altos Hills. The park has eight tent-only campsites at Towle Campground and at $43 per night, it might be one of the most affordable accommodations for many miles around. (The best bargain — at $2 per person — is likely still Black Mountain Backpack Camp at Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, which is operated by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. It’s a lovely 1.5-mile hike in to the campsites.)

Looking for a gorgeous, but challenging hike? Check out the Los Trancos Trail , a 7-mile, mostly shaded loop through some of the Peninsula’s most scenic open space.

Details: Find the park, which is dog-friendly on weekdays at 11799 Page Mill Road in Los Altos Hills. Tent-only campsites are $43 per night; https://is.gd/towle .

Camping at Mount Madonna County Park

Camp in the southern Santa Cruz Mountains in Santa Clara County’s Mt. Madonna County Park, which has 116 drive-in and walk-in campsites and five yurts of different sizes. There’s plenty of hiking on-site, including four routes with different difficulty levels inspired by local wildlife. Download the Agents of Discovery app, and you’ll be able to play augmented reality mobile games as you hike the 1.5-mile Newt Trail. You can also pair the trip with an excursion to the Santa Cruz coast or visit nearby wineries in Gilroy, such as Fortino and Sarah’s Vineyard .

Details: This dog-friendly park at 7850 Pole Line Road in Watsonville offers walk-in campsites ($18 per night) and drive-in sites ($34), with RV hookups for water and electricity available;  parks.sccgov.org/santa-clara-county-parks/ .
