Ping hoofer golf bag pictured

Ping Hoofer Stand Bag

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

One of the  best golf bags  on the market and perhaps the most well-known range within the stand bag sector, the Ping Hoofer continues to offer an incredible blend of performance and stylish looks for a wide array of golfers.

To begin with, it is lightweight at just 5.5lbs, with the comfortable nature coming from two well-cushioned straps and a hip pad. Unlike some stand bags, the Hoofer is able to go onto a push cart, as the cart strap channel passes underneath the main pocket. This means that it is straightforward to attach and ensures unrestricted access to pockets.

In regards to pockets, there are 11 on the Hoofer, with all 11 varying in size and depth, so there is plenty of space to put waterproofs, drinks etc. Lastly, like the  best Ping golf bags , the stand itself is excellent and performed perfectly in all manner of conditions and terrain. Downhill, uphill or sidehill lies were conquered with absolute ease thanks to the quality of the stand itself, and the renowned Hoofer base design.

Titleist Players 5 StaDry Stand Bag Review

Titleist Players 5 StaDry Stand Bag

The Titleist Players 5 StaDry Stand Bag is a stylish, classic-looking bag that really strikes the right chord with us. One of the best Titleist golf bags on the market, the design remains faithful to the DNA that made it resonate with so many golfers worldwide.

As well as the appealing aesthetics, the bag has tons of practical features too, including two external lined cooler pouches to store your beverages, a Sharpie holder and a spacious golf ball pocket. Titleist have also added a new 5-way top divider to aid with both club organisation and accessibility.

This bag oozes class and simplicity and comes in four color options that will appeal to a wide range of tastes, but the main stand-out feature, in our testing, was the straps, which didn't twist or tangle throughout the 10 rounds we used the bag for.

Wilson Exo Lite Stand Bag review

Wilson Exo Lite Stand Bag

Straight out the gate, we must say that this is one of the best lightweight golf bags on the market, with the Exo Lite weighing in at just 3.5lbs. However, don't mistake that for a lack of sturdiness as, in testing, we had no problems with the legs kicking out when placed on the ground and, on a windy day, there will be peace of mind knowing it won't topple over.

Admittedly, we have tested better straps but, importantly, they are comfortable and easy enough to adjust, whilst the comprehensive hip pad makes for an altogether comfortable experience over the shoulders and back. One other point to note, is that the bag isn't fully waterproof, making it more suited to summer months.

There is a lot to like about the Exo Lite Stand Bag, with the stand-out feature, for us, being the magnetic rangefinder pocket. Not only is it convenient, it also feels super-premium. If you don't want to store your rangefinder in this pocket then there are plenty of other pockets that will do, or there's even an accessory clip that you can utilize as an alternative.

Vessel Player Air Stand Bag Review

Vessel Player Air Stand Bag

Southern California brand, Vessel, are known for their luxury travel bags and, if you're after an up market, trendy golf bag then this designer offering could be for you. The Player Air seems to have achieved the Holy Grail and delivered a genuinely lightweight golf bag that is packed with features and has plenty of room for storage.

Beginning with the strap system, which is Vessel’s patented Equilibrium 2.0 Double Strap, it is very clever and delivers multiple benefits. Because it has an 8-point swivel mechanism, which self-adjusts to the way a golfer walks, it balances perfectly, whilst the straps themselves are padded and very comfortable.

Arguably, the stand-out of this bag are the aesthetics, which are, quite simply, stunning! The all-over black finish really adds a premium feel and there are three other colors to choose from as well. However, all this innovation, style and high-quality material does mean the Player Air comes in at the higher end, price-wise, on the market, but with carbon fibre and premium fabrics used, we think it's certainly worth it.

Sun Mountain 2024 H2NO Litespeed stand bag review

Sun Mountain 2024 H2NO Litespeed Stand Bag

Sun Mountain have been making high-quality golf bags for years now and this continues with the 2024 edition of the Litespeed bag. Featuring a range of new colors and patterns, there are also some new bits of technology to mention as well, making this one of the best lightweight fully waterproof stand bags money can by. The fabric is given a waterproof treatment on both sides and has seamed seals making it impossible for water to penetrate through the bag and soak whatever is inside.

Additionally, as the name would suggest, it is very light, at around the 4.4 pounds mark, which equates to just two kilograms. It barely makes an impression on your back and the sensation of ease when carrying is bolstered by the new bubble design hip pad and the X-strap system.

Finally, the pockets are well designed and they are laid out in a way that clearly shows this bag has been produced for golfers, with the Litespeed one of the most complete and well thought-out stand bags we have tested recently. Because of this, we have added it to our best Sun Mountain golf bags as well.

G/FORE Daytona Plus Carry Bag

G/FORE Daytona Plus Carry Bag

According to G/FORE, this is the brand’s best-selling carry bag, and it’s easy to see why, as it offers standout looks, tons of features and great versatility. Put simply, this bag oozes style and attitude!

It's not just the looks, though, where this bag works well, as the clever strap system ensures it feels superb when on the back and, a cool feature we really enjoyed, was the way you can make it a single strap if you want to by clipping the straps on and off. It’s remarkably sturdy, too, with the chrome plated fiberglass legs and feet ensuring it’s never in danger of toppling over.

Practicality-wise, there are an adequate number of pockets available, but the attention to detail is where this bag stands out. There's a small loop for putting your towel and/or bag tags on, and also a really good fixture for your umbrella. The little things make a difference and, overall, the style is fantastic, with tone stitching and quilted panels giving it a premium feel.

Callaway Fairway C HD Golf Bag Review

Testing the Callaway Fairway C bag on the golf course

Callaway Fairway C HD Golf Bag

A terrific offering from Callaway, with its 2kg (4.4lbs) weight making this is one of the  most lightweight bags  you can buy that is still capable of holding all 14 golf clubs plus everything else a golfer needs.

To begin with, the Fairway C has an all-new strap and hip pad system that uses EVA molding for added comfort around the shoulders and back. This really stood out in testing and we thought that the EVA within the straps and on the hip pad added a level of softness that you don't get with many other of the other options on the market.

All in all, the Fairway C provided one of the best carrying experiences we've had with a golf bag and, to help the experience further, there are five pockets in total, with the valuables' pockets the stand-out for us because it is fleece-lined to protect your phone from scratching. It's pretty deep too, meaning you can comfortably store a phone, wallet, keys etc in there. The only slight let-down was the cooler pocket; this is because the opening is on the small side and means it is too tight to slip a water bottle in and out easily when on the move.

The Cobra Ultradry Pro 2023 Stand Bag on a green background

Dan Parker testing the Cobra Ultradry Pro bag

Cobra Ultradry Pro 2023 Stand Bag

The main selling point of this bag is its waterproofness as, in testing, we found that, in changing conditions, the Ultradry Pro kept all our clubs and personal items bone-dry.

How does it keep everything protected? Well, it has seam-sealed zippered pockets and Cobra have also included a waterproof rain hood that diverts water away from your club heads and shafts.

Another aspect of the Ultradry Pro that really impressed us was the straps. Not only were they well-padded, but the Swivel Strap worked superbly throughout the round. This system has a well-positioned shoulder clip that allows the bag to swivel and move whilst you're walking the course so, as you put the bag on, it will move to the adjusted height.

Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Plus Stand Bag on the golf course

Big Max Dri Lite Hybrid Plus Stand Bag

We have always been fans of Big Max bags and, to begin with, we feel the Dri Lite Hybrid Plus is excellent for golfers who are not put off by bad weather, as it is designed to keep all water out. The material and zippers will hold firm against a severe rainstorm, whilst the versatility of this bag is yet another stand-out.

Given the name Hybrid, it can either be carried or attached to a cart or trolley. This is useful because it means you don't need to have more than one golf bag, as the Big Max is versatile enough for any situation. Admittedly, it isn't the most lightweight bag on this list but, considering it doubles up as a cart bag, it is surprisingly lightweight and comes in at around 2kg.

Finally, we see yet more handy features, such as a dual padded strap system that makes it very easy and comfortable to carry. The Dri Lite Hybrid Plus also comes with a 14-way divider system for your clubs, which is a big bonus that we don't often see on golf stand bags. It will also easily attach to any of the best push carts or electric trolleys, thanks to its flat bottom.

TaylorMade FlexTech 2023 Stand Bag Review

TaylorMade FlexTech 2023 Stand Bag

In total, there are nine pockets on the FlexTech, which include a full-length apparel pocket, water bottle pocket, magnetic cooler pocket and a fleece-lined, fully waterproof valuables' pocket. We can confidently say it's the most varied and well-proportioned amount of pockets we've ever tested on a stand bag.

However, the FlexTech is more than just a stand bag so, much like the Big Max Dri Lite hybrid mentioned above, if you like to carry and   use a  push cart  or  electric trolley  from time to time, then this bag will suit you to a tee.

It boasts a cart strap pass-through area, as well as removable straps, which allows it to be used as a cart bag with ease. The straps are excellent; nicely padded on the shoulders and the self-adjusting strap system allows you to quickly find the most comfortable position. The only downside to this bag is that it is not fully waterproof and, as such, you will want to bear this in mind if you play frequently in the wet.

Mizuno K1-LO Stand Bag resting on the golf course in its blue colorway

Mizuno K1-LO Stand Bag

The Mizuno K1-LO is a versatile, lightweight stand bag designed to help you get around the course in some of the harshest weather conditions whilst staying bone dry. Although best suited to summer months, our testing found it can withstand heavy rain, so it can deal with those sudden downpours.

Visually, this bag is excellent and, importantly, there is plenty of storage space on offer as the bag boasts nine pockets, including a full-length apparel pocket and a fur-lined valuables' pocket that we found very useful. The bag also has a Velcro glove patch, whilst the legs are lightweight and sturdy, dealing with whatever weather conditions are thrown at it.

As well as the blue and white, it also comes in four other colorways, so it will appeal to many different kinds of golfers and, overall, we thoroughly enjoyed testing this bag, with the high-density foam shoulder straps making it a joy to carry.

Photo of the OGIO 2024 Fuse Stand Bag

OGIO 2024 Fuse Stand Bag

To begin with, the main standout of this bag is the design, which includes multiple eye-catching colorways. We tested the 'Aloha Oe' model and, if that look isn't to your taste, then OGIO have other models available, some equally as bright, and others a touch more subdued.

Performance-wise, there's a lot to like, as the bag is constructed with various solid sections, such as the top rim, bottom of the bag and the stand. There are even delicate sections like a soft padded back rest and soft inner lining of the valuables' pocket. In all, we feel that a lot of thought and care has been put into the design of this bag.

Out on the course, the six spacious pockets provided ample storage, whilst the sturdy construction and comfortable carry experience make it a superb performing bag in all areas. What's more, there are other features, such as an umbrella holder, as well as OGIO’s very clever Fit Disc self-balancing strap system.

How we test the best golf stand bags

When it comes to our process of testing golf stand bags , we take it very seriously. Whether we are sent a product or buy it ourselves, we put each bag to the test out on the golf course to ensure we can provide thorough and reliable advice. Most importantly though, manufacturers cannot pay for a good review because we tell it how we see it. Every member of the Golf Monthly team is an avid golfer and as such, knows what does and doesn't make for a good stand bag.

As far as our methodology goes, if we say we have reviewed a product, that means we have done so properly. We also endeavor to use all the features on the golf bag. That means, for example, if the valuables pocket claims to be waterproof, we will pour water on it to find out.

Specifically to stand bags, we put the stand itself to the test on different lies, angles and ground conditions because there is nothing more annoying than a stand bag with a poor stand. This comprehensive testing style is not just exclusive to golf bags either, we test using the same ethos and methodology across all gear categories.

How to choose a stand bag

So what are some of the factors to consider when you are purchasing a stand bag? Well below we have listed some that we think are the most important and most of the bags above will satisfy all our criteria.

If it is going to be on your back and shoulders during the round, then it has to be light and it is important to realize that some models are lighter than others. That being said if you want heavier models or ones you can use on carts too, there are models designed for that.

On that same kind of note, comfort is also vitally important. It has to fit properly on your body whilst also having comfortable straps. Some also have padded areas around the hips and back as well which helps.

Whilst a good stand bag will be light and comfortable, it should also be strong whether it be the core bag section, the strap, or the stand itself. Preferably the sturdier the better because it has to protect your golf clubs properly.

If storage for all your gear is important, then some bags have more, and larger, pockets. The top models will have specifically designed pockets for your apparel, balls, accessories, perhaps a beverage pocket and definitely one to house valuables.

If you see yourself playing in the rain a lot then waterproofing will be a factor to consider. Some models above are better than others in this regard because they have been designed as such.

Importantly many brands have started to realize that we want our golf bags to look good as well as be functional. As such there are loads of unique designs and colors to choose from so it is a case of finding something you like the look of.

The final factor to consider is of course price. When choosing a golf bag you have to be aware of what you can afford because there are good models at every single price point. If you want to spend more, or less, then there is a bag for everyone.

How do I choose a golf bag?

Well the first thing is to decide if you want a stand or cart bag. If you want the former, then check out the factors and models above to narrow down your choice. If you want a cart bag then check out our best golf trolley bags guide in which we give lots of information on which models are best, factors you should look out for and lots of other advice.

What is a stand bag?

A stand bag is a very convenient way of transporting your golf clubs because they sit on your shoulders and are therefore lightweight and comfortable. Importantly, as the name suggests, the bags have two built-in legs that allow them to sit at an angle when you're taking your shot. This makes it easy for you to pick your next club, and stops the bag getting wet and muddy on the ground on those bad weather days on the golf course.

Can stand bags be used on golf carts?

Yes, more and more brands are starting to design stand bags that can easily be used on golf carts. Some come with specifically designed lock systems on the base of the bag and some have specific straps so you can securely put the bag on your cart.

Why don't professionals use stand bags?

Well we have seen some professionals occasionally put stand bags into play but this is rare because the top players in the world need as much storage as possible for their golf gear. This means tour bags are what we usually see on our televisions because they can house lots of clubs, apparel, golf balls, gloves, food, drinks and all the other golfing paraphernalia professionals need to carry.

Feel Like a Pro with a Tour Golf Bag

Favored on the professional circuit for their size, organization, and luxury, tour golf bags help you feel like a pro every time you step onto the course. As the largest golf bags available, they can carry the full set of clubs that professionals need to play their best. Their ample number of pockets and divided compartments keep items organized, increasing efficiency between each swing. And, since they’re made for only the best, tour bags are built using leather and other deluxe components. If you want to feel like a pro, a tour bag from Carl's Golfland is the bag for you!

Is a Tour Golf Bag Right for Me?

Tour bags come with excellent organizational capacity and a sense of grandeur, so if you need the extra space or like feeling like a golf pro, they may be the bag for you. Sometimes called staff golf bags, their larger size makes them impractical for carrying around the course yourself. If you're using a tour golf bag, you'll want a caddie or a golf cart to carry your bag for you.

Staff bags are available in both full and midsize, giving you the option of a slightly smaller bag with many of the same benefits. Midsize tour bags are often more practical and lighter weight, but also have fewer pockets and less overall capacity. No matter the size, you'll enjoy the benefit of having dedicated accessories pockets, insulated beverage pouches, pockets for electronics, space for your apparel, and much more in a staff bag. If you want to feel like a pro, enjoy ample carrying capacity, and you either use a caddie or a golf cart to travel from hole to hole, then a tour golf bag is a great choice.

It features a double-strap system which is easy to adjust. Another excellent little addition was the marker pen slot.

The only downside I found with this bag was the weight, which seemed slightly heavier than others. This is partly due to being a hybrid bag meant for riding and walking.

The Motocaddy Hydroflex is one of the most popular golf bags of the last 5 years, and for good reason. It’s both waterproof and lightweight, which is awesome. However, I think it’s best if you have an electric push cart. It’s made to fit Motocaddy-branded trolleys perfectly.

The Hydroflex is a stand bag by default, but with a cool feature. Its EASILOCk technology allows you to quickly release carry straps so that you can carry it on your back. An additional rear stand-lock allows it to double as a cart bag as well.

This means that if you have a variety of ways you like to golf, the Hydroflex is good for each option.

The Hydroflex also has 5 full-length dividers and 5 spacious pockets to store your things. An external beverage pouch keeps your water at an arms-length, or you can throw your rangefinder in that pocket instead.

The only drawback is that the Hydroflex isn’t on Amazon, so buying and shipping may not be for everyone.

  • Can work as a stand, carry or cart bag.
  • Fits perfectly into most electric push cards
  • Thermo sealed and heat-wielded seams are high quality.

Titleist Ultra-Lightweight Golf Club Travel Carry Bag with 2 Pockets, Apparel Storage Pocket, and Double Strap, Heathered Forest Green

Stand bags can be used on a cart or when walking the course. The stand is generally quite sturdy and is made to help ensure the bag does not slip when you place it down.

A stand bag usually comes with plenty of pockets and a backpack-style strap for carrying. A stand bag can be lightweight, or it can be a little heavier. The top of the bag will have several positions to place your clubs. Although it may not always have the full 14 full-length dividers that golf cart bags have, there is usually some type of divider.

A stand bag has lots of storage areas. It will likely include a water bottle holder and a lined valuables pocket. The side pockets of the bag will probably have room for apparel. A stand bag is traditionally considered a walking bag. It is built with all of the accessories that a walker needs.

The stand bag has great versatility should you put it on the cart for the day. There is usually a cart strap to ensure it fits well, and there are grab handles to get the bag on and off the cart. Overall you will find that the stand bag is the best golf bag for versatility.

Sunday / Carry Bag

The lightest weight bag you will find is the Sunday or Carry Bag. A Sunday bag and a carry bag will be slightly different, so we should look at those differences before we break this down any further.

The Sunday bag is meant for a quick Sunday afternoon on the  golf course . You do not need to have all of your clubs with you; in fact, you will probably only bring about seven or eight clubs. The Sunday bag is the most lightweight bag on the market, and most of the time, it does not have a stand on it.

A carry bag can be a stand bag or a Sunday bag. Carry bags are built to allow you to carry the clubs around the course and can sometimes fit all fourteen clubs. In fact, many Sunday bags are now being made with very lightweight stands to become a little more versatile.

If you love walking the course but walk to lug around a large and heavy bag, this is the category you will want to consider most heavily.

If you  play golf  on a cart, the cart style is your best choice. With a cart bag, you will get the maximum number of pockets, easy access to your clubs, and most likely a 14-way top to organize things.

The cart bag has lots of storage space, and the only major downside of this bag is the weight. Some golf cart bags can get quite heavy and be difficult to lift in and out of your cart. The good news is that as long as you are not filling the bag with 40 golf balls, you should have no issues with the weight.

The dividers that a cart bag provides help keep your golf equipment in great long-term shape. The club’s grips and shafts will not rub together, so they will not need to be replaced quite as often.

For golfers that own their own cart, the cart bag also is a way to keep all of your golf accessories organized. Choose something with plenty of pockets, at least a five-way divider, and an excellent cart strap system.

Tour or Staff Bag

Most of the time, tour bags are used by professional golfers. These bags can carry lots of equipment and have very large storage areas throughout the bag. Most tour bags are also leather and only offer a few dividers.

Tour bags are not what weekend golfers typically use when heading out to the course. However, some players want a really big bag. We recommend lifting a few of these before you decide that this is your desired bag.

Most golfers that use tour bags also have a backup bag that they use when they need to travel or they want to walk. Pay attention to what you load into the pockets of the Tour bag, as it will hold quite a bit of gear.

If a manufacturer makes golf bags, chances are they make stand, cart, Sunday style, and more. If you can find a style and design you like, you may have a great selection of bags. Here are the best bag brands available today.

TaylorMade makes a wide range of golf bags, probably best known for their stand bags. TaylorMade tries to appeal to the younger crowd, and they do a great job of making sportier type golf bags.

TaylorMade bags usually come in many styles, but some will have full-length dividers to help keep your equipment protected. TaylorMade almost always includes a lined valuables pocket and a water bottle pocket on most of their bags.

Ogio is not all involved in the golf equipment business, but they are very well known when it comes to golf bags and accessories. The Ogio bags have great features like a smart strap system, lined valuables areas, special rangefinder pockets, and more.

Another great thing about Ogio is that they think like a golfer when designing their equipment. The pockets are always easily accessible, and the bag tends to hold up well, even when playing in poor weather conditions.

Sun Mountain

Like Ogio, Sun Mountain is not involved in the golf equipment sector. They choose to make some of the best golf bags on the market instead. Sun Mountain is known for being a bit more expensive than other brands; however, their quality is usually unmatched.

We love that Sun Mountain always tries to make bags that are lightweight as well. If you want to play in any weather condition with a lightweight and comfortable bag, Sun Mountain is the way to go.

Bag Boy has made a name for itself because of the bags they have created through the years. Bag boy bags are known for having several pockets in a variety of sizes as well. The bag boy cooler pocket bag has always been one of the best sellers.

We like the Bag Boy cart bags the best as this tends to be the strong point of their product choices. The shoulder strap on the Bag boy is usually very comfortable and will not cause you to strain as you bring your golf bag to the car after a great round.

Callaway tends to make bags that appeal to the average golfer. They produce a product that is available in many different colors and styles as well. The Callaway bags always have a variety of pockets and dividers to help golfers stay organized.

Callaway stand bags were a bit better than the cart bags for a long time, but that has recently changed. Some of the new release Callaway bags are impressive and sometimes offered for a few dollars less than other brands.

Titleist is known as the player’s brand. If you are a great golfer, chances are you will want to take a look at the Titleist golf bags. These bags are usually simplistic in design but are very high quality. Titleist focuses on a waterproof lined valuable pocket, room for a rangefinder, and excellent performance in any weather condition.

Titleist golf bags tend to be a bit pricier than some other choices, but this is going to be a classic and high-functioning bag that will make it through many seasons.

Understanding the best golf bags on the market is a great start. However, choosing the perfect one for your golf game can be a bit more complicated.

Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions we get asked.

How Often Do I Need To Replace My Golf Bag?

Golf bags tend to last for quite some time. If you take care of the bag, you will not have a problem making it last five or more years. Some people will replace their bag because it starts to get faded from the sun. If you buy a high-quality bag, it may have some UV protection built in to help with the fading.

Another deterioration you may see on a bag is the zippers and the putter slot. After a while, the zippers can get stuck, and they won’t slide as they once did, especially if your bag gets wet.

The putter well is sometimes not attached to the bag, and it can eventually break off. Outside of these rare issues, most people will not replace their bag until they are ready for a new look.

Are Expensive Golf Bags Worth It?

As you probably noticed, most of the golf bags on our list are within the same general price range. Generally, if you spend somewhere from $200 to $400, you can find something great. However, there are those outliers that are going to be priced much higher, sometimes even into the thousands.

Typically these bags are constructed of leather and will be hand stitched with very close attention to detail. If this is something that matters to you, then, by all means, go for it. If you are looking for a bag with the highest performing accessories and capabilities, chances are this golf bag is not going to offer more than any of the standard golf bag out there.

Do Golf Bags Fit More Than 14 Clubs?

Most popular golf bags will have 14 full-length dividers which can hold fourteen clubs and a putter. Other bags are very large, like a tour bag or staff bag, and you can place large amounts of golf clubs for storage. We don’t recommend purchasing one of these bags if you are just going to be playing at your local course.

You will notice that these bags will likely not have the full length dividers that other smaller bags have. They are quite heavy and durable, but difficult to use for your everyday cart bag.

Do I Need Full Length Dividers?

You will notice that some bags have a 14 way top but not full length divider. Many golfers would rather have more full length dividers and less spots on the top. The dividers are what really helps to make sure the clubs do not get damaged while in the bag.

A divider will keep your clubs from scratching each other. Dividers also help to make sure that the grips stay in good condition long term. When grips rub against other grips, they start to break down.

When you purchase your golf bag, make sure that you are paying attention to both the top and whether the dividers will travel the length of the entire bag.

If you are looking for a new golf bag, here are some of the key factors you need to consider. This is the criteria we used to pick the best golf bags above.

Type Of Bag

The best bags are the ones that suit your needs on the course. For some, this will be a cart bag; for others, it will be a stand bag. The type of bag that you choose is going to be primarily based on the way that you like to play.

If you are a walker, the best golf bags will be those that allow you a lightweight and convenient method of traveling the course. If you play a lot of cart golf, the best golf bags will give you the storage and club protection you need.

For many golfers, it will be hard to find just one bag that does the trick. You will likely need to look at having several bags in your arsenal. Many players find that they have a cart bag for those days on the cart and a stand bag when they are walking.

The best golf bags are those that hide dirt and dust. When you travel around the course, your cart bag is going to get quite dirty. The wheels on the back of the cart will spread dirt onto the bag, and you will sometimes be left with a mess to clean up.

If you have a dark-colored cart bag, this will not be an issue; however, something that is white or light blue will show a lot of dirt. Stand bags don’t tend to get as dirty. Players are more careful about where they are placed when walking, so you can get away with lighter colors on these bags.

Price Range

The best golf bag on the market will not do you much good if it is not in your price range. Bags range from around $100 to well over $1000. Most of the best stand bags are going to be around $250 or so. Tour or Staff bags are easily over $500 but contain extra features and sizes that an average golfer won’t need.

Considering you should get about five or more years from your bag, this is a good investment in your game.

Make sure that the bag you choose has ample storage for the things you want to put into it. At the very least, you should be able to store a dozen golf balls, tees, glove, and a water bottle in your bag.

Some bags have larger pockets to store your golf shoes, an extra jacket, or launch monitor. One nice bonus storage feature are magnetic pockets that keep your stuff in place but are easy to grab into.

When you purchase a stand or carry bag, pay very close attention to the strap that it has on it. Ideally, you will want a double strap that is highly adjustable. The double strap helps evenly distribute the bag’s weight and make it easier to carry.

A cart bag usually has a single shoulder strap that will make transporting to the car and the cart a bit easier. This strap will not be ideal if you are choosing to walk the golf course.

Some bags include removable straps so you can ditch a little bit more weight if you need to.

We understand that it can be hard to narrow down the hundreds of golf bags out there. Having tested and played with so many of these models, we have a good handle on what works well and what does not.

Start by choosing a bag that appeals to you from a performance standpoint. Think about the features you want, a 14-way vs a four-way divider, the apparel pocket, the valuables pocket, a place to put your golf gloves, and anything that may matter to you in a bag. From there, look for something that appeals to you visually and fits within your price range.

With all of the manufacturers on the market and the work they put into their bags, there will be an option for you that will work.

Golf bags: is stand, cart, tour or carry best for you?

Golf bags come in numerous shapes and sizes but which type should you be buying?

Golf Bags

There are many things to consider when choosing the best golf bag . The brand will be important to some, especially if you’re like me and have mild OCD tendencies which mean a golf bag simply has to match the irons they transport. Almost as important as having everything matching is deciding if a stand, tour, carry or cart bag is best for you.

Golf bags come in numerous shapes, sizes and prices and they are not all designed to do the same thing. There are four standard types of bag and within those four categories are numerous different styles, not to mention a wide variety of colours and designs.

It can be quite daunting if you don’t know what you are looking for and it is easy to make the wrong choice. Unless, of course, you read my handy guide…

Choosing the right bag for your needs

The first thing to consider is where you are mostly going to be playing golf. For example, what is your climate? Do you need to use a buggy because of the heat? If not, perhaps your local course is hilly, in which case you probably won’t be wanting to carry a big heavy bag up and down those hills for four hours. Not just because it’s physically draining, but because the more tired you get the more this will affect your accuracy, especially on the tee when you’re hitting driver.

Your age is also a factor. Senior golfers usually favour a trolley, whereas younger players tend to carry their bag. This impacts greatly on which bag you should go for. For golfers who use a trolley then a Cart Bag is the logical choice. For those who prefer to carry their golf bag the Cart Bag is the worst possible option as they are heavy and not designed to be carried on your back for any length of time. Golfers who like to carry their bag will need a Stand Bag or perhaps something even lighter, such as a Pencil Bag.

There is also the Tour Bag which is the most expensive and is essentially the Rolls Royce of golf bags. These are the bags you will see the tour professionals using in tournaments. You can carry those but be aware that they are heavy. In fact, in most cases they are at least twice as heavy as Stand Bags. Remember, tour pros have caddies, you don’t.

So let’s take a detailed look at the four types of golf bag and who they are aimed at.

Stand Bags

Reasons to buy

Reasons to avoid.

These are the most popular choice with amateurs. They’re lightweight (usually around 5lbs or less) but still roomy enough to hold your clubs as well as other essentials such as shoes, waterproofs, spare golf balls, refreshments etc

The cool thing about these bags is when you set the base down the legs automatically extend out so the bag will stand by itself, hence the name. This not only helps to keep the bag clean on muddy courses but it makes it very easy to get your clubs in and out of the bag and therefore saves time between shots.

Stand Bags have lots of pockets and are usually either fully or partially waterproof. You can use these on trolleys or a buggy too as they are extremely versatile, but the main use of the Stand Bag is that it is easy to carry around the course.

There are some high end Stand Bags that are actually like mini-Tour Bags with legs. These give you the best of both worlds. You’ve got the lightweight, functionality of a Stand Bag and also the great look and quality of the Tour Bag. Those aren’t cheap but they’re a good all around option for those who like to occasionally carry their bag while still wanting to “look like a pro”.

Golf Cart Bags

As the name suggests these are designed specifically for golfers who use a trolley or a buggy (or a cart if you’re in the US). They are heavier, more cumbersome and a lot less functional than a Stand Bag when it comes to lugging it around on your back for 18 holes, particularly because the carry strap is on the opposite side to where you will find it on traditional golf bags.

The reason for this strap location is that this bag is not designed to be carried much further than from your car to your buggy. The strap is then usually removed and stored in one of the pockets so the bag sits snugly on the trolly or cart.

Cart Bags usually have a divider that provides each individual club with its own compartment, whereas with a Stand Bag you’ll often have two or sometimes three clubs per section. Cart Bags also have more pockets than you’ll know what to do with.

These things have pockets and little compartments everywhere, all designed in such a way that you can easily access them when your bag is secured to your trolley or buggy. Many even come with an insulated drinks pocket to keep your refreshments cool on those hot summer days.

They aren’t always waterproof though and those that are will usually cost you a bit extra.

Golf Tour Bags

Tour (Staff) Bags

They’re big and they’re beautiful. There’s nothing quite like a Tour Bag (also known as Staff Bags) and they look so cool that it’s almost worth the effort of lugging them around for four hours. Almost, but not quite.

Whether you go for a Tour Bag depends either on how fit and strong you are or whether you have a trolley. If you use a trolley regularly then you can use a Tour Bag but really a Cart Bag is the more practical option and there isn’t really any logical reason to go with a Tour Bag other than vanity. Which is of course fine. They look good, they’re made from high quality materials and, most importantly, the pros use them. We all want to be like the pros, right?

I would love to use a Tour Bag but it isn’t practical for me. While I do prefer to carry my bag rather than use a trolley, I’m a fairly unfit bloke in his late forties whose local course is so hilly that to get around it you need a sherpa rather than a caddy. So struggling around with a massive Tour Bag wouldn’t be smart. That’s why I use a Stand Bag, but I do own a Tour Bag (a classic white and black PING model) which I occasionally take to the driving range, but mostly it’s just there to be looked at in wonder, as it sits there in all its majesty.

Titleist Sunday Carry Bag

Also known as Pencil Bags or Sunday Bags, these are ideal for the golfer who wants to travel light. They’re usually structureless and very minimalistic. There’s a pocket for balls, a ring for a towel and not a great deal more. You can fit a full set of clubs in there but ideally you might just want to go with a half set.

If want to get a quick nine in before work you can put your clubs in a Carry Bag and throw it in the back of the car as it takes up very little room. Or perhaps you’re going away for a short break with the family and you know there’s a golf course nearby. Chances are there won’t be room in the car to fit your Cart Bag in there as well as all of the family luggage, but you’ll probably be able to sneak a Carry Bag in there without anyone noticing.

These bags are also ideal if you’re playing a par three course and only need irons and a putter. It saves you humping around a bag full of clubs that you don’t need.

Carry Bags are relatively inexpensive so it is worth investing in one even it’s just for those rare summer evenings when you fancy travelling light and walking the course without pulling your trolley.

Which golf bag should you buy? Here's our summary

The important thing is to identify your needs and select the bag that best meets your requirements. If you are only going to have one golf bag then the best all rounder is the Stand Bag but if you are using a trolley then you definitely will want a Cart Bag.

Tour Bags are a luxury and great for special occasions when you want to show off, while a Carry Bag is a good addition to any golfer’s collection because there will be times when it comes in very handy.

Tumi adds Nelly Korda and Ludvig Aberg as brand’s first golf ambassadors

Travel is obviously a huge part of being a professional golfer, with pros on the road upwards of 30 weeks out of the year—and amateurs following suit with their own golf travel plans. Recognizing how many golf travelers depend on their Tumi luggage, the brand made a splash in the golf world earlier this year releasing a collection of golf bags and accessories. Now it has its sights set on the pros. Tumi has just announced it would be working with Nelly Korda and Ludvig Aberg as their exclusive luggage partners. Both will carry Tumi luggage and backpacks on tour and in travel.

“There’s a lot of synergy between Tumi as a brand and how I approach my game. … We share the same drive for perfection,” Korda said. “It’s a partnership that truly feels like the perfect fit.”

Korda’s No. 1 World Ranking and Aberg’s No. 5 spot make them top partners for Tumi's first global golf ambassador team. The two stars join pro footballer Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. and McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris on Tumi's global ambassador roster as the brand expands its reach in the sports world.

Korda and Aberg will have the opportunities to add even more Tumi -protected hardware to their collections this season, as Tumi was selected to design custom trophy cases for three upcoming events—the Tour Championship for the PGA Tour, and the Solheim Cup and CME Group Tour Championship for the LPGA.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/products/2024/7/10/Screen Shot 2024-07-10 at 12.54.00 PM.png

A first for both tours, these trophy cases align with Tumi's reputation for luxurious, durable and thoughtful design. Each case is meticulously made with aircraft-grade aluminum and the brand’s signature 19 Degree rib detailing—inspired by the popular 19 Degree Aluminum Collection.

Inside the case, velvet lines the base and back wall and mirrors on the side panels elevate the unboxing experience and inspire future viewers to see themselves in possession of the trophy next.

“Millions of travelers around the world choose Tumi to protect what they value most every day,” said Victor Sanz, Tumi Creative Director. “We’re thrilled to bring that renowned strength and design ingenuity to protecting these trophies, which symbolize years of hard work, dedication, and passion from top players in the sport.”

Every year, Amazon chooses two days in mid-summer to offer deep discounts to Prime members, with tens of thousands of products on sale. In addition to brands like Apple and Brooks, Amazon's own products typically go on sale. Be on the lookout for discounts on Echo speakers or a Fire TV .

Prime Day will take place July 16 and 17, 2024, but you can expect to see sales before and after those dates. If you spot a great deal before the 16th, go ahead and snag it, because popular products tend to sell out. If you don't have time to shop on the actual Prime Day dates, there are still deals to be had, as Amazon has kept the sales going on certain products for as long as they have inventory in the past.

Yes, you must have an Amazon Prime membership to get these discounts, but becoming a member is easy and costs $14.99 a month (or $139 a year). You can also sign up for a 30-day free trial that aligns with the sale. Pro tip: There are two less expensive options worth looking into—a student membership or the Prime Access program.

How do players adapt their strategy and golf bag for the Genesis Scottish Open?

Whether it's simply hitting more stingers into the wind, playing to their strengths or swapping out clubs, there are plenty of ways players adapt their strategy and golf bag for the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.

With help from Sporting Insights, we've taken a closer look at all the equipment changes made in Scotland this week.

When it comes to equipment changes, some of the most common additions for the Genesis Scottish Open are mini-drivers, extra 2 and 3 irons or utility irons to handle the different conditions and shots required of a links-style course in potentially wet and windy conditions.

Ahead of this week, eight players (Haotong Li, Rasmus Højgaard, Nicolai Højgaard, Max Homa, Tommy Fleetwood, Guido Migliozzi, Sean Crocker and Chandler Phillips) all put a mini-driver in their bag in addition to their regular driver.

Yet one of the most common substitutions this week has been in favour of the Titleist T200 2 utility iron. To name just a few players who swapped things out for that club this week, Ludvig Åberg switched out his TaylorMade Stealth 2 wood for the utility iron, while Sungjae Im switched his Titleist 818 H2 hybrid, Matteo Manassero swapped out his Titleist GT2 7 wood, Billy Horschel substituted his regular 5 wood, Jordan Smith switched out Titleist GT2 5 wood, and Justin Rose replaced his 7 wood.

Antoine Rozner, the only man to be bogey-free for the first two rounds, is also carrying a Titleist T200 2 utility iron this week.

. @AntoineRozner , the only player bogey-free after two rounds and sits solo second, one behind the leader...👏🇫🇷 #GenesisScottishOpen | #RolexSeries — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 13, 2024

Two of the biggest changes belonged to Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas.

While not necessarily links-golf motivated, Morikawa kept his usual TaylorMade driver, 3 wood and 5 wood combination but switched to a new set of TaylorMade P-7CB irons after testing them on Wednesday afternoon. Thomas also kept his typical Titleist driver, 3 wood and 5 wood combination but added a new driver and putter to the bag this week. It was a decision that really paid off on Thursday, where Thomas carded an eight-under 62 to take the first-round lead.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy also made one very significant addition, including the TaylorMade P-760 2 iron that he had in his winning bag last year, replacing the 5 wood he typically carries.

So how much significance do players place on switching up a club or two when it comes to bag set-up this week?

Rickie Fowler, who often carries a 5 wood, instead added a second 4-iron, a Cobra Darkspeed with 19 degrees of loft, to his bag in order to give him better options in the wind.

"I don't normally carry a three iron, I carry a 5 wood," explained Fowler.

"This is a 4 iron from our game improvement line, with a stock loft of 19 degrees so it says four but plays as a 2 iron. It just gives me better options, lower and stronger flight in the wind."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DP World Tour (@dpworldtour)

As for Niklas Nørgaard, who kept his 19 degree hybrid in the bag, strategy and club selection are both things that he's taken into consideration.

The Dane, who ranks fourth on Tour in driving distance with an average this season of 322 yards, said that he's playing to his strengths.

"Well it’s normally a lot more windy and it’s a lot firmer playing these links courses," he said.

"So I’m a lot, using the wind more, always shaping it up into the wind or with the wind. This year I’ve incorporated this fairway finder that I have so I can hit it really, really low and take about 4 to 5pmh off the swing and it just gives me more control.

One of the biggest hitters on Tour, Niklas Nørgaard on how he adapts to links golf 💪 #GenesisScottishOpen | #RolexSeries — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 9, 2024

"But playing links is by far my favourite. You know you’re going to hit those low ones. I’ve never played this course so I don’t know what’s ahead. Today we have firm and fast, tomorrow it’s going to be rainy, so you just kind of have to be prepared for anything out here.

"I would say that I’m just trying to play to my strength, which is as far as possible. But then you have those bunkers out here, and if you’re in these bunkers you’re just, it’s a penalty, so just by all means trying to avoid the bunkers but get as far as possible. But it seems on this course there’s always just this bunker that’s in play, so it’s whatever you do, there’s always one, so it’s just rather get in the one that’s further away."

What Biden had to say about Trump’s golf match challenge

  • Published: Jul. 10, 2024, 9:24 a.m.

  • Kevin Manahan | NJ Advance Media for

In his rally on Tuesday night , former president Donald Trump challenged President Joe Biden to a golf match, insisting the ratings would be sky-high, while calling it a chance for Biden to “redeem himself” after a disastrous performance during a June 27 debate that has dramatically altered the presidential campaign.

“I’m officially offering Joe the chance to redeem himself in front of the entire world,” Trump said at a rally in Doral, Fla.

“Let’s do another debate this week so that ‘Sleepy Joe Biden’ can prove to everyone all over the world that he has what it takes to be president,” Trump added. “But this time it will be man-to-man, no moderators, no holds barred. Just name the place, anytime, anywhere.”

In the debate, Biden, who said he was once a 6-handicap, challenged Trump to play golf — “if you carry your own bag,” suggesting Trump couldn’t handle it physically.

On Wednesday morning, the Biden campaign responded to Trump’s latest golf-match proposal, which came during another rambling rally in which Trump lauded fictional cannibal Hannibal Lecter, called former N.J. Gov. Chris Christie a “fat pig,” and — after saying he knew nothing about Project 2025 — praised its author .

“Donald Trump hasn’t been seen in public for 12 days, now he’s inviting fictional serial killers to dinner, teasing lil Marco Rubio, praising Project 2025 architect Tom Homan, and challenging the President of the United States to golf,” the Biden statement read.

“We’d challenge Donald Trump to create jobs, but he lost 3 million.

“We’d challenge Donald Trump to stand up to Putin, but he bent the knee to him.

“We’d challenged Donald Trump to follow the law, but he breaks it.

“We’d challenged Donald Trump to not destroy our country, but that’s all his Project 2025 aims to do.

“Joe Biden doesn’t have time for Donald Trump’s weird antics — he’s busy leading America and defending the free world.

What Alabama’s only Democrat in Congress says about Biden staying in the race Jul. 9, 2024, 9:06 a.m.

This photo of Trump, bloodied and defiant, may now define the 2024 presidential race Jul. 13, 2024, 10:24 p.m.

“Donald Trump is a liar, a convict and a fraud, only out for himself — par for the course.”

Some Democrats have started calling for Biden to step down as their presumptive nominee following his dismal debate performance last month.

“Our victory was so absolute that Joe’s own party now wants him to throw in the towel and surrender the presidency after a single 90-minute performance,” Trump said. “They want ‘Crooked Joe’ out of the race. It’s a shame the way they’re treating him. But don’t feel sorry for him. He’s a very bad guy.”

What started out as a fun accessory now represents so much more for the title character on Elsbeth .

While talking with reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Tour, Carrie Preston explained why her quirky character Elsbeth Tascioni carries not one, but three bags at any one time on her CBS drama.

For the uninitiated, Elsbeth’s penchant for portable storage began on The Good Wife , which was the idea of then Executive Producer Brooke Kennedy.

“The bags are [filled with] whatever she thinks she might need that day to help her with her work,” continued Preston, who marveled about a reporter’s inquiry about the bags and their contents. “I find it fascinating how many people are interested in what is in the bags. But are you interested in what is in her brain too?”

But there are key moments on the show when Elsbeth forgoes the excess baggage. “I’ve made the choice in Elsbeth that once I have got a killer and I’m ready to go in and frame them, I don’t have the bags,” she said. “You’ll notice in the show, in those final scenes when I come in to arrest the murderers, I don’t need those bags anymore.”

Preston also addressed her unique costuming and what it says about her character and the series. “She’s a fish out of water. That’s a good thing to always have in mind. She’s not really a detective. People will see the way she’s dressed and they think they don’t have to take her seriously — at their peril. That’s definitely by design. She stands out from all the other detectives on television. This isn’t your normal police procedure. That’s what makes it extremely special.”

Elsbeth will return for its second season on Thursday, October 17. It will air at 10 p.m. ET, after the timeslot premiere of Matlock.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
