Did you know that you can count your field trips as school hours or a even a full school day? I like to keep track of all of our trips with a homeschool field trip log and keep them in each student’s portfolio.

field trip journal printable

We like to track all of our field trips and add them to our end of the year portfolio. Not only does it document what we have learned it is fun to look back on and see the places we have gone. Then it becomes a scrapbook of sort.

I like to include any pamphlets, maps or educational handouts that we received at our field trips. This really helps add to the learning experience of the field trip.

Field trips enhance learning.

Field trips are amazing learning experiences. I enjoy finding field trips that accompany whatever we are studying in our homeschool. I make a point to make sure I plan a few learning field trips throughout the year that go with what we are learning.

It helps to make learning come alive for my kids. My older kids have fond memories of visiting historical sites, museums, zoos, even our local fire station. They learn so much when they can be immersed into a specific place or location.

Their senses are enhanced and they seem to soak up all of the information and retain it. I love watching their brains click when they can see something right before their eyes that we read in a book

Printable Homeschool Field Trip Logs:

If you are wanting to start tracking your field trips you must check out this list of field trip logs.

My Field Trip and Travel Journal

Help your kids to really process what they’ve learned on field trips and vacations on the 150-page My Field Trip and Travel Journal!

My Field Trip and Travel Journal

My boys were exposed to natural wonders like spectacular lightning storms, mountains, geysers, tar pits, paint pots, enormous caverns, red rock arches and balanced rocks, the Grand Canyon, and petrified trees. In just 17 days, they encountered a wide array of animals: insects as big as their feet, wolf packs, elk, bison, and thousands of bats. Watching the bats come flying out of the main entrance to the Carlsbad Caverns at dusk was truly spectacular.

Our family loves hiking and climbing and there was plenty of that going on. We hiked through Arches National Park and climbed inside Native American cliff dwellings, underground kivas, and big brick castles.

Bible Road Trip™ Teach Your Kid the Bible

Notebooking Our Field Trip in a Travel Journal

I made a field trip and travel journal for my boys to take on our journey, but it really didn’t work out for our kids to write during our trip. I know I read a lot about car-schooling, but that would never fly in our family. Our boys cherish car trips. They provide so much space for observation, and (if we’re going to be honest here) eating and sleeping.

When we got home, I printed our photos and the boys journaled about each site they’d visited. They marked their maps, pasted in photos and paper souvenirs like tickets, and listed all of the places they’d been. We worked on notebooking about one place each day, so it took us a good three weeks or so to do all of our writing. We just skipped any writing classes in our curriculum during that time.

My boys have a wonderful record of their trip, they did their notebooking soon enough after our return to really remember the events, and they were able to think critically about everything they saw and did.

Our field trips and travel since have been shorter–mostly one-day trips, but those trips have been important learning journeys for our kids. They notebook about each journey and mark it on their map, including photos from the trip.

If you’ve been around Thinking Kids for any time at all, you know I’m a huge fan of the practice of notebooking . My children are excellent writers because of it.

Keeping a field trip and travel journal for each child has been a wonderful experience for our family and I wanted to share that with you as well, so that your kids can benefit from the practice.

My Field Trip and Travel Journal

The My Field Trip and Travel Journal is a wonderful record of trips for your children, with watercolor artwork and quotes from Christian history throughout.

Do you remember all of the trips you went on as a child? Neither do I. There are some I remember, but I don’t know the location. Your children will have a permanent record of the places they’ve explored! There are two lists for your children to use.

My Field Trip and Travel Journal

As your children fill out the list of places they’ve been, remember to prompt them about day trips and small field trips as well as vacations and road trips. The one-hour trip to a factory to see cheese made is an important field trip and should be recorded.

My Field Trip and Travel Journal

Homeschool Field Trip Journal Pages

I have been wanting to create some homeschool field trip journal pages for a while, but have been hesitant to create them.  Writing for most kids is something you have to sneak in.  So I have been mulling over even the smallest detail about the forms.  For the field trip pages I created that even meant  brainstorming the title.

I just couldn’t bring myself to name the pages Field Trip Report because it sounds so — well — like a report.  My sons enjoy writing for the most part and I want to keep it that way.  Finally, I settled on the title Field Trip Journals because I think there is freedom in the word journal for a budding writer.  It almost feels like you are not going to squash their creative ideas before they get started.  I appreciate some breathing room when I write and I extend that same liberty to my kids.

Instead of my sons reporting back to me, I prefer they want to write about our field trips.  Too, I wanted to use a more whimsical form so our kids could feel like they own it.

Homeschool Field Trip Journal

I have created some boxes for them to write in and then created a few more smaller blank spaces if they wanted to share one or two more ideas.

Some kids are word whisperers and I was sort of that way growing up.  Jotting down a word or two that I heard lately either gave me a chuckle or invoked a serious side.

The most recent word my kids are getting a chuckle over is come-uppings.  Is that even a word?  I used it one time in talking to them and they haven’t quit saying it since then.  I don’t care if it’s a word or not because it gives them a cause to pause in the day about their vocabulary and a love of words.

Then we have kids, I have one too, that is a doodler, a scribbler and part designer.  Picture words reminds him of an event.  The blank space is big enough for a scribble or two even by big kids.

So the blank spaces allows your kids and mine to make the page their own.  Too, I didn’t want the pages too babyish so they don’t outgrow them by Kindergarten.

I have 2 pages that have more manly man color.  My boys have low tolerance for anything too colorful and I try to minimize the eye-rolling.  Then of course on the ones for girls, I go girl color crazy.  I have 2 color choices for them also.

I am excited about the forms because you know how much our kids enjoy field trips with other homeschoolers or just with the family.  It has always been the highlight of our month.

I hope this sparks a fun and whimsical side to writing for the kids because I think I give my boys enough reports to write about.

What is a Field Trip Report?

A field trip report for kids is a document or assignment that students complete after they have gone on a field trip. The report is typically a way for students to reflect on what they have learned, share their experiences, and demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter.

In their report, they’ll want to include things like the date and location of the field trip, what they saw and did, and what they learned. Think of it as a way to remember all the fun they had!

They’ll also get to have a memorable keepsake of the fun trip they’ve taken so they can look back on it.

field trip journal printable

This is great and since I'm getting all of our journaling papers sorted its perfect timing! Great way to write down quick stuff for writing later. Even the little detail of the "log" at the top works so well! Printing for use, thanks so much.... More importantly congrats on the new little one!

field trip journal printable

Thanks! And I'm glad the log will work for you. We hope to journal many adventures together.

I like your trip log. I get the kids to do a journal entry and try to grab a brochure at the places we go, but they don't always have one. I think I will print of few of these off to add to our trip binder.

Ooo...a trip binder. You've got me curious? What else is in your binder? How fun. I'm a little addicted to stationary products...especially organized binders.

This is wonderful! Thanks so much for generously sharing it! I featured your field trip log as the Free Printable of the Day at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/LivingMontessoriNow (and on Pinterest)

Wow! Thanks for letting me know, Deb. You always share such great ideas, so it's fun to be included.

It looks like the FREE Field Trip Log is no longer free??

So awesome! I have a kindergardener and would love to start tracking our bigger field trip! You are the best!

So glad it will work for you!

Thank you for these. I included them in the vacation books I made for the kids for our trip to the desert of NM. I linked back to here with my blog post. Thank you so much. http://3gigglygirlsathome.wordpress.com/2013/08/09/vacation-books/ Lori

Lori, I'm so glad that it was helpful. Thanks for linking back. I'm gonna check out your post!

My kids love this and don't even realize they are writing (the reason I love it.) We use this form for our homeschool history class. They complete one of these each week about a non-fiction book of their choice regarding the subject we are studying!

That's a great idea! I'm glad you shared it!

Hello, We have been using your Field Trip Log this year, so I wanted to stop by and say Thank You! for sharing your creation! It is perfect for my 5 & 7 year olds, even for shorter outing that I would like them to reflect more on. I have truly appreciated your efforts with this! Blessings!

Hi, Just wanted you to know that we used your field trip logs for the last school year (2015-2016), and I'm printing more now for this new school year! Thanks for making such a great free printable!

So glad it has been helpful, Stacy! Happy homeschooling.

Thank you Jamie for all you do. Your website has been very resourceful today while I was searching for fieldtrip ideas. It is awesome to know that there are talented people out there willing to help and inspire others at no cost.

I'm glad this could be helpful to you!

20 ways to save money on homeschool field trips.

20 Ways to Save on Homeschool Field Trips

Field trips provide hands-on learning experiences and are lots of fun too. However, taking field trips can be challenging when money is tight. Fortunately, there are many ways to save money on homeschool field trips! Here are some ways I have found.

Every Kid Outdoors

Every Kid Outdoors is a program sponsored by the National Park Service that gives U.S. fourth graders and their families free admission to over 2,000 federal parks, lands, and waters. If you have a fourth grader in your family, print your free pass here .

Museums for All

Through Museums for All, individuals receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) can gain free or reduced admission to over 1,000 museums throughout the U.S. by presenting their EBT card. Museums for All’s website provides a searchable directory of participating museums.

Local Businesses

Ask around in your community, and you will likely find that many business owners are willing to offer tours and share about what they do. We have toured a veterinary hospital, a honey bee farm, and other businesses with local homeschool groups without paying anything. Additionally, Factory Tours USA lists factories that offer tours, many of which are also free.

Community Services

Learning about community services is another great way to take a free field trip. Homeschoolers in our area have been able to tour fire departments, the public library, the recycling center, and the mayor’s office.

Explore Nature

Explore nature and get exercise with a free family outing to the beach, a nature trail, or even a walk down a country backroad. You could also add geocaching or a scavenger hunt for more fun.

Free Museums

Google “free museums” in areas around where you live. I’ve found that most cities usually have at least one free museum. The most common type of museum to offer free admission seems to be art museums, but I have also found other types.

Homeschool Discounts

Group discounts.

Many places will offer discounts to groups over a specific number. Organize a field trip with a group of friends or a local homeschool group, and everyone will get to save on the field trip.

Discount Days

Some popular field trip destinations offer reduced admission on certain days of the week. For example, a zoo in our area offers half-price Tuesdays. Your family can save a lot of money on homeschool field trips by planning your outings on these days.

Seasonal Passes and Annual Memberships

Consider purchasing a seasonal pass or annual membership to places your family would like to visit frequently, such as a local nature park, zoo, or science museum. These memberships often don’t cost much more than purchasing day passes twice.

Home Improvement Stores

Lowe’s offers DIY-U Workshops for kids, and Home Depot provides Kids Workshops . Both programs offer a free craft or project kit and an in-store class. For a schedule and to register, see the stores’ websites. You may also want to check with other home improvement stores in your area to see if they offer classes or field trip opportunities.

Churches and Places of Worship

Many churches sponsor free or low-cost events for the community. This could include fall festivals, musical performances, missionary fairs, food festivals, and more. Additionally, some historic churches offer free tours.

Community Events

Free community events are another great way to save on homeschool field trips. Often cities or non-profit organizations will sponsor free events. Keep an eye out for these on local news websites and social media. What’s available will vary by area, but these can include things like cultural heritage events, musical performances, outdoor summer movies, and holiday events.

Library Events

Libraries aren’t just for borrowing books. Many libraries offer things like storytimes, crafts, and various educational events and presentations. These programs are especially common during the summer months when school is out.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is an excellent way for your family to take a field trip while giving back to your community. Volunteering can also be a way for older kids to gain work experience and skills. Check around in your area to find out which organizations allow children to volunteer.

Colleges and Universities

Touring college and university campuses isn’t just for teens making a college decision; it can be a fun learning experience for the entire family. Many campuses feature historical buildings and museums. While these museums aren’t usually free, they are often lower-priced than other field trip options. Also, keep an eye out for community and educational events sponsored by colleges in your area.

Groupon and Other Discount Websites

Websites like Groupon often sell discounted tickets to events and attractions. It can be hit-or-miss, but it’s worth occasionally browsing sites like these for deals that could save your family money on homeschool field trips.

Credit Card Perks

Some credit card companies offer free or discounted tickets as a perk to their customers. One example of this is Bank of America’s Museums on Us program. This program provides free general admission to cardholders, during the first full weekend of every month, to over 225 museums across the U.S. If you have a credit card, check to see if they offer a similar program.

Travel Off-Season

Planning a big trip? If you are planning on traveling out of town for a longer field trip, try to plan it during the off-season rather than peak travel times, especially if the area is a popular tourist destination. Not only will lodging and other expenses be less expensive, but the places you visit will also be less crowded than during peak travel times.

Virtual Field Trips

If field trips aren’t possible at all right now because of a lack of transportation, illness, or other constraints, you may want to try a free virtual field trip instead. Virtual field trips allow your family to explore the world without leaving home.

Remembering this trip down Autumn Leaves Road: 2016 field journal

I keep harping on why it’s important to keep notes on what you observe out in nature.

If you don’t, in a month, you’ll forget almost all the details.

For decades, I wrote observations longhand in a pocket-sized reporter’s notebook. These days I dictate field notes into my smart phone. Returning home, I type the recorded observations into my computer, creating a file that includes location, date, year and weather conditions.

Between notebooks and computer files, I now possess hundreds of memory folders, encapsulating field trips enjoyed years ago.

Today, do you think — without having journal notes to refer to — I would remember what happened on a dirt road in rural northeastern Pennsylvania on April 19, 2016? The answer is no, not a chance.

But I did take notes, and — brushed up just a bit — here they are:

Field journal

April 19, 2016

Sunny - Winds NW at 15-25

Location: Autumn Leaves Road, Wayne Township, Pa.

Creeping along, we spy a northern flicker on grass by the side of the road. The black “mustache” of a male stands out clearly.

Also along the road: Last year’s beech tree leaves — now bleached almost as pale as marsh grass in late winter — still cling to smooth-barked twigs. Pussy willows are popping.

In wet spots, we note fronds of fiddlehead ferns poking out to enjoy springtime sun.

More: Outdoors lovers are easy to spot, just check their boots.

In fields, goldenrod galls on last fall’s brittle stalks catch our eye. Also there: milkweed pods, ashen-gray and wide open, their parachute seeds long dispersed.

Black willows blaze orange in early afternoon sun. Red-winged blackbirds honk-a-ree from the edge of overgrown field.

Bare roadside shrubs and saplings reveal last season’s nests. We stop to admire a goldfinch’s neatly woven cup, lined with thistle down.

In a brushy meadow, a field sparrow sings its bouncing ball song loud and clear from a young aspen’s peak. Then it moves to a perch on a weathered fence post that is cut through by rusted barbed wire.

More: Get familiar with your outdoor surroundings and find wonder in the smallest changes

Tree swallows dip over farm ponds, capturing insects too small to discern. Their backs glow as blue-green as the sun-splashed ponds rippling below them.

Painted turtles bask on semi-submerged logs jutting out from dense clumps of pond rushes. Detecting our presence, one turtle drops to the water like a bowling pin topples when struck. As we enter an intersection, incessant chattering overhead sounds like a dozen goldfinches conversing.

Keeping straight on Autumn Leaves Road, we pass by the yard of a paint-peeled farmhouse. There, an eastern bluebird perches on a garden bean pole, just a few feet from its chosen nest box. Bright blue on its back shouts out “male!”

Behind the house, a female kestrel streaks across a field of close-cropped grasses. No green shoots have emerged; just the wheat-straw remains of a meadow still looking like winter. Sleek and tawny, the she-falcon glides, swoops and soars. Then she veers when it looks like she’s spotted a vole or grasshopper.

Observations from this day continue for several more pages. But you get the point.

So many wonderful memories would have faded had I not kept some notes in a journal.
