“With Burt Bacharach, it was very different. It was predominantly music first and often one or the other of us would make the first musical statement,” Costello told Rolling Stone last year. “In some cases, I wrote a melody to which he would write the bridge. Sometimes writing every other line would come from one or the other of us once we’d got a dialogue going. But then my job would be to respond to the mood and the implication of that music, what would serve that music in a narrative. The mood of the music was very apparently melancholic and reflective, so I didn’t want to overcomplicate lyrics with lots of showy images.”

Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets To Open All Dates

General on sale begins friday march 31, 2023 at 10am local on  elviscostello.com.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters  – with their special guest Charlie Sexton – are proud to announce:  “We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday”  – a 23 date tour produced by Live Nation. Commencing on June 7th in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, the tour includes stops at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and the Beacon Theatre in NYC. Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets will open all of the coast-to-coast dates.

TICKETS:  The general on sale for  We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday  will begin Friday March 31, 2023 at 10am Local on  ElvisCostello.com.

Since returning to the road in the summer of 2021, in the guise of “Elvis Costello & The Layabouts”, E.C. and The Imposters – Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas, Davey Faragher and augmented by Texas guitarist Charlie Sexton – have undertaken three tours in the United States and one in the U.K. and northern Europe. Most recently Costello played the highly-acclaimed “100 Songs and More”, a ten-night engagement at the Gramercy Theater, NYC at which he played more than 230 original songs, repeating only three titles. The shows that began in solo performance went on to spring nightly surprises, involving everything from an ensemble including musical saw, fiddle and Uillean pipes to an eight-person Broadway vocal chorus led by M.D. Rob Mathes, duets with jazz bassist, Endea Owens and, from the halfway point, performing with Steve Nieve at the piano before adding two different horn sections, led by trumpet player and arranger, Michael Leonhart. The stand included guest vocal appearances by Rebecca Lovell, La Marisol and JSWISS and concluded with a more than three hour finale performance with the full band line-up.

The “We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday ” dates will follow two headlining appearances at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia, three nights at the Sydney Opera House and a show at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne. In May, Costello and Steve Nieve will return to the concert hall stage together for the first time in twenty years, in Reykjavik, Iceland. Further dates are planned for later in the year and will be announced shortly.

Since 2018, Costello has issued ten record releases; the most recent being, “The Songs of Bacharach & Costello,” a 4-CD, 2-LP box-set celebrating his nearly 30-year songwriting collaboration with Burt Bacharach. It was named Best New Reissue by Pitchfork. The Grammy Award-winning Elvis Costello and The Imposters album “Look Now” of 2018 was followed by the companion E.P., “Purse” while a French language E.P., “La Face Du Pendule à Coucou” followed the album, “Hey Clockface” – recorded in Helsinki and, Paris. Together with co-producer, Sebastian Krys, Costello also completed work on “Spanish Model” – an adaptation of 1978’s album “This Year’s Model” with new vocals recorded in lyrical adaptation and translation with a cast of Latin music performers. In 2022, the latest Elvis Costello and The Imposters release, “The Boy Named If,” was followed into the stores by “The Resurrection of Rust,” – the recording debut after fifty years of Rusty – the duo of Liverpool-based singer-songwriters, D.P. MacManus and Allan Mayes, accompanied by The Imposters for new recordings of their 1972 repertoire including two Nick Lowe compositions from his days in the band Brinsley Schwarz.

Preparations for a return to the stage in 2021 (and again in the summer of 2022) led to the release of  “The Boy Named If (Alive at Memphis Magnetic)'”, which found the band running down live arrangements of their new songs along with the Jagger/Richards song, “Out Of Time” and Nick Lowe’s 1976 Dutch release, “Truth Drug”. The collection was completed by a brand new version of “Magnificent Hurt” by the Japanese duo, chelmico.

D.P. MacManus and Lowe first met in a public house, opposite The Cavern in Liverpool in 1972. Lowe went on to produce “Elvis Costello’s” largely ignored Stiff Records debut 45rpm, “Less Than Zero” and the subsequent failed singles releases, “Alison” and “Red Shoes”, although the same songs received more attention upon the release of his debut album, “My Aim Is True” in July ’77 in the U.K. and in a Columbia Records release late in the same year.

Between late 1977 and 1980, Nick Lowe produced the Elvis Costello and the Attractions albums, “This Year’s Model”, “Armed Forces”, “Get Happy” and ‘”Trust,”.  In the Spring of 1979, Elvis Costello and the Attractions and Mink Deville were joined by Rockpile – featuring both Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds – and undertook a three-month package tour of the United States. At this time, Costello’s version of a song from the last Brinsley Schwarz album, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love & Understanding” saw its first release as the B-Side of the Radar Records single, “American Squirm”, credited to “Nick Lowe And His Sound” with the producer seen on the picture sleeve seated at the mixing board of Eden Studios in tinted horn-rims, cradling a Jazzmaster guitar with a newly inlaid fretboard reading, “Costello”. The track was subsequently added to the U.S. edition of Elvis Costello and the Attractions, third album, “Armed Forces”.

In 1984, Costello took the producer’s chair for the first and only time at a Nick Lowe session for the Hi Records-informed single, “L.A.F.S.”  which was also included on the F-Beat Records album, “Nick Lowe & His Cowboy Outfit”. In the same year, the duo recorded the Burt Bacharach/Mack David/Barney Williams song, “Baby It’s You” at Lowe’s Am-Pro Studios in Shepherd’s Bush, London, also the location for a Boxing Day (1979) recording session with Lowe’s then father-in-law, Johnny Cash which yielded the hit release, “Without Love” and the Cash/Costello duet, “We Ought To Be Ashamed”. In 1986, Nick Lowe produced the Attractions’ last complete album, “Blood & Chocolate” at Olympic Studios, before returning for a bass-playing cameo on “Hurry Down Doomsday (The Bugs Are Taking Over)” for the 1990 Warner Brothers album, “Mighty Like A Rose”. In 1993 Nick Lowe (or Costello himself) played bass on nine of the songs on the album, “Brutal Youth”, which some mistook for a full Attractions reunion. They most recently performed together last summer on The Boy Named If & Other Favourites tour.l

Elvis Costello was born Declan Patrick MacManus on the 25 August 1954, he is an English singer/songwriter from Paddington, London, UK.

Born in Paddington, London, UK, Costello is the son of parents Lilian Alda and Ross MacManus, the latter of whom was a trumpet player and band leader.

Costello’s first musical endeavour was with the band Rusty, which he started when he moved to Liverpool, UK, with his mother in 1971. After returning to London, another band Flip City came into fruition and saw the singer/songwriter adopt a pub-rock style of music and performance. He was later signed to the independent label Stiff Records which suggested a name change, to which he combined Elvis Presley’s first name with the name his father performed with on stage, Costello. The label released the debut album “My Aim Is True” in 1976 to good reviews as well as the reggae-driven “Watching The Detectives”.

Later being associated with the punk and new wave scenes due to Costello’s unabashed passion and vigour. He soon made a name for himself with his eclectic, widely influenced instrumentation and style, drawing influences from folk and rock to ska and reggae, along with seemingly infinitely-literate lyrics. The 1978 album entitled “This Year’s Model” was the first recorded with his backing band The Attractions and featured more of a hard-rock sound than his earlier material.

Costello’s ambitious 1979 album “Armed Forces” took the band to No. 2 in the UK chart, as did Costello’s most successful single “Oliver’s Army”. This same year Costello found time to produce the debut album for the band The Special, sparking a ska revival.

The early 1980s were a very good time to be an Elvis Costello fan, in which time he released no fewer than nine albums including “Trust”, “Imperial Bedroom” and “Punch the Clock” and consistently toured with The Attractions, before tensions were raised between Costello and bassist Bruce Thomas, which caused a split by 1986.

The majority of Costello’s work since the split has been as a solo artist, defined by his smart and diverse wordplay, genre-blurring music style and inherent passion. Costello has been awarded numerous awards throughout his career including a grammy, two Brit Award nominations for Best British Male, has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone ranked the band 80th on their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list.

Live reviews

I've been a fan of Elvis Costello's since the Seventies and must have seen him live more than fifty times, in all his different incarnations. It's a widely held view that he's at his best when playing on his own, an

opinion I share.

His Cardiff gig on the tour he'd decided to name, with his trademark wry humour,Detour, was a good example of how one man armed only with a piano, some stringed instruments and a career's worth of great songs can provide great entertainment. The set spanned his whole career, from the likes of 'Red Shoes' to a song from The New Basement Tapes album ('Down On The Bottom').

Along the way there were the hits e.g. 'Oliver's Army' and 'Watching The Detectives' and enough rarely heard songs, like 'Ghost Train', 'Watch Your Step','Love Field' and 'Kinder Murder' to keep Elvis snobs like me happy.

Add a few judiciously-selected covers ('She' and 'Side By Side', among others) and the return of the frontwomen of support band Larkin Poe to much appreciative applause to help rock up the last third of the show, and you had a fine performance.

Pride of place must go, however, to 'Shipbuilding',performed alone at the piano with an intensity that rolled back the years to the time it was written. As always with Elvis, the political side of his character was not left unexplored, both in such songs and his chat between them. Also worth mentioning was the tailoring of the stage set to acknowledge that Elvis was in Wales, the sort of attention to detail which is always appreciated.

Veteran rock icon Elvis Costello has now reached his 60s yet shows no sign of slowing down his relentless touring schedule. Delighting fans globally, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee is considered to be one of the most well known singer/songwriters who has collaborated with a huge amount of stars.

His discography stands at 30 albums so condensing this into a 20 song setlist is a difficult task however the way in which Costello is able to charm a crowd means they remain enthusiastic to whatever he chooses to play. There are of course big cheers for his hit single 'Veronica' which clearly a lot of the audience were hoping he would play. The songwriter delights his fans with tales of years past, the beginnings of his career and his travels around the globe. He also speaks fondly of his supportive musicians and introduces them each to the crowd who cheers them on.

Big finisher 'Watching the Detectives' leaves the crowd cheering and stamping their feet for the reappearance of Elvis. He leads the musicians back onstage and performs a final time before exiting proving he truly is an icon of rock.

Elvis was absolutely spectacular, combining a mix of jovial storytelling and timeless classics marked on a night that all of the New Orleanians in attendance will not soon forget. His video clip of "Papa Costello" aka Ross McManus rocking If I Had A Hammer on BBC television "back in the day" was just plain COOL! To top it all off, he had local R&B legend Alan Tourssaint join him onstage to thoroughly captivate an already grateful audience. My personal favorite was the two singer/songwriters performing Deep Dark Truthful Mirror. The intimate Civic Theatre was the perfect venue for one of the best shows I've seen, since moving to the Big Easy five years ago.

Elvis Costello came to Jazz festival 2014 in Montreal. I am a big fan of his work. I reserved 2 tickets as soon as I could in the new Maison symphonique.

I was amazed with his solo show. Him, by himself playing all his guitars (about 15 different ones) and his voice, deep, true and very melancholic.

Felt swept up my feet when he sang Alison, shipbuilding (with keyboard), everyday I write the book, Peace-love and understanding, etc. I would have sat there for another 3 hours.

Can't wait for him to come back solo or with his band. Amazing man, creator and music industry underdog leader. Bravo Elvis.

Elvis Costello was once again played Glasgow and as usual I attended .

Although I had never seen him in The Armadillo it was a great night.

It was a tour through his greatest hits and a joy with 2 old Attractions band members playing along side him with 2 female backing singers and bass all covered brilliantly.

I did although find Elvis voice somewhat strained at times on certain songs (Which I have never seen happen before).

Finished of with Pump it Up ! And that they did pumped it up until the roof nearly came of the building.

Thanks Elvis.

Jesus Christ on a broomstick this show was painful. Elvis sounds like something wounded. Long, incoherent, rambling stories may have been a saving grace from his singing. No crowd atmosphere - people seemed to be chatting. I left after 45 minutes. And no - it could not have gotten better. The main sounds like he is in the painful pushing throes of constipation.

Kingsbury Hall was the perfect venue to see Elvis...Larkin Poe was the opening act and they were very talented...Elvis was amazing...only had to wait 39 years to see him and the wait was worth it...basically a "Storytellers" type show...great visuals and he was in fine form...I would highly recommend as my wife and I came out totally satisfied with the show...

Such an intimate evening! Can you imagine how it feels to have Mr Costello behind your seat singing Allison to you? Now i can! Genius! Nice set up, i only missed Oliver's Army, but such a good set list. You don't miss anyone, he's good enough by himself playing acoustic. GREAT EXPERIENCE

I have been listening to him since i was 14.my favorite line is "who put these fingerprints on my imaginstion.i have a lot of favorite singer song writers, but find him the most versatile.if i could pick one person to sit with in a pub, and talk it would be him.di

Musically good. Visually good.

Too loud for the Ryman.

Elvis Costello was obviously focussed on his new album as he didn't play many hits.

Certainly not my favourites: Oliver's Army, Good Year for the Roses, Veronica or I can't stand up for falling down.

Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe 2023 Tour—Review

elvis costello tour 2023 opening act

Elvis Costello at the Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, Wash., June 9, 2023 (Photo by Brad Auerbach, used with permission)

With the thickest, deepest, most eclectic songbook of any artist that first recorded in the 1970s, Elvis Costello rolled into Chateau Ste Michelle outside of Seattle for a return engagement on June 9, 2023. What a lovely setting for a show: very casual, intimate and comfortable.

Despite a seemingly endless choice of songs, the former computer programmer from Britain pulled heavily from his debut and sophomore albums. With Costello deftly remixing various arrangements, those who were with him from day one were rewarded with a blissful evening.

Earlier in the year, Costello commanded an epic 10 nights at New York’s Gramercy Theatre, barely repeating a song. Despite a few rusty joints, he and his crack quartet the Imposters shifted gears smoothly through the evening.

Over the decades and across 30-plus albums, Costello, born August 25, 1954, has explored myriad styles (country, string quartets, Americana, to name a few) and collaborated with master tunesmiths like Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach. He has adroitly recorded with key members of the other Elvis’ band. But at this show, Costello eschewed all that and reached into the early chapters of his songbook. Although those songs were written when he was slathered with the ‘angry young man’ label, the songs have withstood the test of time, and were delivered with a solid punch. Original members Davey Faragher (bass), Steve Nieve (keyboards) and Pete Thomas (drums) were joined by Charlie Sexton, the fierce guitarist who turbocharged Bob Dylan’s band for years.

Watch Costello and Lowe together at a show from 2022

Costello opened with an explosive “Mystery Dance” and moved to his second album with “This Year’s Girl.” A relatively new song, 2013’s “Come the Meantimes,” slithered into a ska-inflected beat and then morphed full bore into “Rudie Can’t Fail” (pulled from the Clash’s landmark 1979 London Calling album).

Costello delivered an excellent intro about the risk of picking the “wrong” album at a record store but delicately selecting Bruce Springsteen’s first album (“a Dutch singer, right?”), then blasted into a torrid “Radio Radio.”

Costello then went back to his first album, serving up the disc-closing “Waiting For the End of the World.” He also assayed the album’s opener, “Welcome to the Working Week,” in countrified fashion. As if transporting us back to the late ’70s, he also delivered welcome versions of “Watching the Detectives,” “(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea” and a blazing “Pump It Up.”

“(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace Love and Understanding” was the perfect way to complete the circle of the evening. Written by Lowe, made famous by Costello on an album produced by Lowe, the song inadvertently made Lowe very wealthy when Curtis Stigers’ version landed on The Bodyguard soundtrack.

The evening’s closing number seemed foretold, and indeed Costello delivered a tender version of “Alison.”

As only the second date on his summer tour, odds are the Costello setlist will evolve by the time it hits your town.

elvis costello tour 2023 opening act

Nick Lowe at Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, Wash., June 9, 2023 (Photo by Brad Auerbach, used with permission)

Opening act Lowe will likely stick to his polished set. As the ace producer behind Costello’s first five albums, Lowe is well attuned to songcraft. His evolution from scrappy new waver (“Cruel to be Kind” and “So It Goes”) to well-aged observer (“Lately I’ve Let Things Slide”) puts Lowe in rarefied territory. His enigmatic band Los Straitjackets come equipped with lucha libre masks, matching sparkly guitars and superb stage polish.

Costello has more dates. Tickets are available here and here .

That was the worst show I’ve ever witnessed in my entire lifetime. Worse than bad karaoke.

SomeLowver

Elvis’s voice wasn’t great, sound mix was woeful, and Nick Lowe didn’t come back for Peace, Love and Understandin’. Greek Theater.

Rod P

I stuck it out to the end of EC’s show because I knew that Nick Lowe would come back and duet on “What’s So Funny”…. then he didn’t come out. But I couldn’t blame him, because Elvis did a woeful bass-heavy version that totally downplayed the killer chord progression on guitar that MAKES the freaking song! I didn’t get EC at all this show. Here’s some advice for Elvis…..just honor the original arrangement.

VegasMikey

Saw him in Vegas last night. The reviewer for this article must have been on crack. I’m a big Costello fan and last night I was embarrassed for him. The arrangements for his ‘classics’ were pure garbage. His solos with just piano were like cats howling. After an hour in, the aisles were steady with people leaving. We joined them. Don’t waste your money.

I would say…. When the imposters were just riffing, it was a cool vibe. But as soon as Costello joined in, the vibe was gone.

Dragaknee

Just saw the show last night in Michigan. The 4th time I’ve seen him (three prior times were amazing) and had to leave after an hour. The Worst. Arrangements-WTF? Mix-painful and shrill with over bearing drums (and totally different mix from Nick Lowe’s whose sound was clean and crisp so EC must have had his guy working the board for him.) Performance shockingly bad (timing was off, not even in the same key at times, piano solo ended with awkward silence and then hit a single key-I think EC missed the transition). Horrific singing. And most disturbing, EC had trouble handing off the guitar to a roadie and stood there in a stupor blankly staring into the crowd motionless for what seemed an eternity and then almost fell over when handed a guitar. He is ill or was very drunk.

4everEngland

Elvis Costello is an artist that I’ve wanted to see for years. I attended his concert in Phoenix and was hugely disappointed. I was hesitant to see him when I looked at the setlists of some of his previous shows on this tour, and I should have followed my instincts. He could have played so many great, familiar songs like “Veronica”, “Everyday I Write the Book”, etc but the setlist left a lot to be desired. He sang a slow, dirge-like version of “Accidents Will Happen” accompanied by only a piano that was truly horrible. Vocally he sounds like he has really slipped since his heyday. Having been a fan of his for decades, seeing him in person was a big letdown.

Micky

The concert was extremely poor. Almost laughable in parts.

Elvis Costello to Reunite With Nick Lowe for Summer Tour

Elvis Costello and the Imposters will embark on a U.S. tour this August, joined on most of the dates by Nick Lowe , Costello’s original late ’70s/early ’80s producer and, of course, the man who knows the answer to the question “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.”

Costello and Lowe last shared a touring bill in 1989. Lowe will appear on 11 of the 15 initially announced dates, backed by Los Straitjackets, the all-instrumental band that has joined him on other recordings and live shows in recent years. At two of the concerts, the opening act will be Nicole Atkins, who sings a featured vocal part on Costello’s new album, “The Boy Named If.”

Although only 15 shows appear in the initial itinerary, a release about the tour promised “more dates to be announced.” The initial lineup of gigs is primarily concentrated on the east and west coasts with a sprinkling of Western-state dates in between. It begins Aug. 6 in Ohio at Huber Heights’ Rose Music Center at the Heights and moves on to venues including Toronto’s Massey Hall, Virginia’s Wolf Trap and New York City’s Rooftop at Pier 17.

Out west, the greater Los Angeles area will get a chance at two shows — at the Grove in Anaheim and the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza — and the tour will also visit Denver, Salt Lake City and Paso Robles before concluding in Las Vegas at the Theater at Virgin Hotels on Sept. 3.

Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. local time, with more ticketing information available at elviscostello.com .

Guitarist Charlie Sexton was announced as part of the touring lineup and seems to be at least a semi-permanent addition to Costello’s band, the Attractions. He initially joined up so Costello could have an extra instrumentalist on board when keyboard player Steve Nieve was unable to make the initial dates on a U.S. tour last year due to international COVID travel restrictions, but then he stuck around even after Nieve was in the house. Besides Nieve, the Imposters include another member of Costello’s original backing band the Attractions, drummer Pete Thomas, and a 21st century conscriptee, bassist Davey Faragher,

Lowe produced Costello’s initial five-album run that lasted from 1977’s “My Aim Is True” through 1981’s “Trust,” returning for 1986’s “Blood and Chocolate.” He also played bass on half of the 1994 album “Brutal Youth.” He is the writer of Costello’s 1979 anthem (and traditional final encore song) “Peace, Love and Understanding,” originally recorded in 1974 with Lowe’s pre-solo-career band Brinsley Schwarz, so the odds of an encore duet at these shows would seem high.

“The Boy Named If,” released in early January, has been Costello’s most widely acclaimed and embraced album of this century, in no small part due to its return to a rocking full-band sound that sometimes recalls the eras of “This Year’s Model” or “Imperial Bedroom,” after detours into other stylistic diversions like the Grammy-winning “Look Now.”
