Things you need to know before visiting Guinness Storehouse

woman standing in front of the St. James gate at Guinness Storehouse in Dublin Ireland

Guinness Storehouse in Dublin

When visiting Ireland you’re likely on the hunt for the best Guinness in Dublin. Everyone says the Guinness in Ireland tastes different. (It really is true!) But, since you’re a curious person, you want to visit Ireland and the mecca of Guinness to either agree or disagree. Read on to hear more about visiting the Guinness Storehouse and things to know in advance. I’ve visited twice with two different ticket types so I have first hand experience and recommendations.

Tips for Visiting Guinness Storehouse in Dublin :

Buy your tickets in advance.

Since the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin is one of the top attractions to visit definitely buy your tickets in advance online. It’s a self guided tour, but you choose the time of entry for your ticket. Especially if you’re visiting during a busy time of year or there is a large event in town it will be a lot busier. Don’t just assume you can buy them when you get there!

All experiences are not the same

What is most important to you when visiting the Guinness Storehouse? That will help to determine which ticket is right for you.

When purchasing your tickets you’ll notice that there are many different types of tickets with different activities included. I’ve experienced both the very basic ticket and the VIP Connoisseur experience.

All tickets will include the “museum” or learning about Guinness history and making beer through an interactive experience as well as a pint of beer to drink at the Gravity Bar.

The Academy experience includes another pint of Guinness and learning how to pour the perfect pint. A newer experience includes a beer with your picture on it. This is called a stoutie. With this ticket you get a second pint of beer with a fancy photo in the foam (much like fancy latte art at coffee shops.) A great photo op for the ‘gram! (P.S. Lets be friends! Follow me on the gram for all of my (beer) adventures in Ireland and beyond.) WanderLust in Real Life Instagram

The most all inclusive experience includes the museum and learning about Guinness origins, learning how to pour the perfect pint as well as a more intimate experience trying some more rare Guinness beers in a back lit bar with a small group. When we did the connoisseur experience in 2017 we also were given some bottles of our favorite beer to take with us. It was our honeymoon so they essentially gave them bottles of all of them when everyone else had to select 1-2 favorites. If you love craft beer, definitely splurge for this ticket! If you plan ahead, you could bring beer in your checked luggage home .

All of the beers in the glass fridges while theres a flight of unique Guinness beers sitting on top of a back lit bar top

Visit the Guinness Storehouse Gravity Bar for a great view over Dublin

Included in every ticket is a pint of Guinness at the Gravity Bar. They have expanded the Gravity Bar in 2020 to accommodate more people. It’s located on floor 7 of the Guinness Storehouse facility and has glass windows all the way around so you can see out over Dublin for a panoramic view.

Cheers with a pint of Guinness at the 7th floor glass lookout over Dublin at the Guinness Storehouse

There is luggage storage onsite

I wasn’t aware of this until my most recent visit, but they do have a luggage drop service here. So, if you’re looking for something to do in between when you have to head to the airport or immediately when you arrive but can’t yet check into your accommodation, why not check out the Guinness Storehouse for your first or last pint of the best Guinness in Dublin?

Length of time to visit

Be sure to allow yourself at least 2-3 hours to visit to take your time. There’s a lot to see, and plus you’re going to want to relax with a pint or two while you’re there. The first time I visited when I did the Connoisseur Experience I we spent more than that there. I think it was around 4 hours. There’s a lot to see and definitely don’t rush through it depending on what ticket you decided to purchase. If you’re planning on grabbing a bite to eat while there you may want to allow yourself additional time. But above all, don’t rush! You’ll be surprised how much time you can spend at the Storehouse drinking the best Guinness in Dublin.

Beyond the best Guinness in Dublin, food at Guinness Storehouse

If you’re planning to grab a bite onsite either before or after your Guinness Tour in Dublin at the Storehouse you can actually make reservations in advance at the 1837 Bar & Brasserie. Other options include the Brewer’s dining hall and the Cooperage Cafe. The Cafe is located on the first floor and is a quick bites more of a coffee shop with coffee, drinks & snacks. No matter what you fancy to eat, there are options at the Storehouse or there are many historic pubs all over Dublin. Read more about Dublin Things to do .

When to visit

Since the Guinness Storehouse experience is indoors you truly can visit rain or shine! Enjoying the Guinness Storehouse is not dependent on a gorgeous day. Even though my day feels a lot more sunny after a Guinness tour in Dublin with a pint in my hand.

It’s true!

The best Guinness is in fact at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. You should definitely be sure to do a Guinness tour in Dublin while you’re visiting Ireland. The Guinness Storehouse is located at the St James Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland.

It is estimated that the Storehouse has received over 4 million visitors since first opening in 2000 and has become a prominent feature on Dublin’s tourism landscape. A new wing was opened in 2006 which includes a live demonstration of the modern brewing process.

The tour takes you through 7 levels of the building, which are designed around an atrium shaped in the form of a Guinness glass.

The entire building explains the history of beer through various multimedia exhibitions which illustrate the ingredients, production, storage, transportation, and marketing surrounding Guinness.

Arthur Guinness signed a 9000-year lease when he first began making Guinness at the brewery and a copy of this document is available for viewing at the bottom of the glass atrium.

You will also be treated to several bars throughout the tour. The Perfect Pint bar allows you to pour your own Guinness pint, and as a bonus, give you the opportunity to have your selfie placed on top of the pint.

The fifth floor introduces visitors to the Brewery Bar where one can enjoy authentic Irish cuisine and refreshments. The meals served in this bar are prepared by using Guinness as part of the ingredients and as a pairing with the food.

You can also find the Guinness Archive on your tour, where visitors can view records dating back all the way to 1759. There are photographs, videos, maps, posters and other items that document the history of Guinness in Ireland and the world.

The tour ends on the 7th floor where you will find the Gravity Bar , a 360-degree bar with a glass lining that allows you to view the entire Dublin from the best view in town .

There is a lot to see as you walk through this facility. Very educational about beer in general as well as Guinness. The Guinness at the end was definitely the payoff for walking up to the lounge with a view of Dublin.

A must when in Dublin Good option if you want to skip crowds.

This was such an awesome experience. The history of Jameson was presented in 3D, very interactive presentation. I actually learned a lot, which made the tasting that much more great.

We could say, without being untrue, that one of Ireland's most appreciated cultural assets is its beer. The brewing process has become an art form and a tourist attraction in itself. The best example of this is the Guinness brewery in Dublin.

So if you plan to travel to Dublin, I recommend that you set aside a few hours to visit the birthplace of Guinness beer and learn in depth not only its brewing process, but its history and leading role in Irish culture . Keep reading and I will tell you what it is all about.

Dublin Guinness & Jameson Irish Experience Tour

Book a guided tour of the guinness storehouse and jameson distillery and enjoy the local flavors..

Forget about dealing with queues and waiting. Hire this Irish experience and visit the most famous breweries and whiskey factories in the country, with a local expert guide.

This option is very good because you will have about 4 hours to tour the facilities of both the brewery and the distillery. You will learn from a local guide, all the curiosities and details about the manufacturing process of the two most iconic drinks of the Irish capital.

In addition, you will have the chance to do a tasting of both products and you can access the Gravity Bar of the Guinness Storehouse, which has fantastic views of the city of Dublin. Forget about queuing and getting tickets, this option frees you from formalities so you can enjoy the local flavors.

Recommended if ... you have a few days to visit Dublin and want to know this cultural and gastronomic aspect so typical from its origins. If you decide to book this guided Irish experience , you will have a fun and interesting souvenir of your stay in the city.

What is included in the Guinness Storehouse tour with entrance tickets?

For beer lovers, this visit is a must and for those who want to know the culture and idiosyncrasy of the Irish capital is a must. I tell you how to buy tickets to the Guinness brewery and what is included:

Queue-free entrance to the Guinness brewery in Dublin

As the visit to the Guinness brewery is so popular, it is usual that there are large queues at the entrance that involve a considerable waiting time. Therefore, when you go to buy online tickets for the Guinness Storehouse I recommend you make sure you include direct access to avoid the queues.

With this ticket you will have access to a complete visit of the factory (7 floors in total) in which you can go at your own pace. Much of the brewery is set up as a museum so in addition to observing the facilities you will also learn the secrets of brewing the different types of beer and why this drink is so popular in Ireland. It includes the tasting of a drink (beer for adults and a soft drink for children), which you can do from the glazed bar on the top floor: Gravity Bar, which has the best views of Dublin.

What to see at the Guinness Dublin Brewery

What is the secret of Irish beer? Few places can answer this question as well as the Guinness Brewery in downtown Dublin. This visit is a cultural experience that also has many dynamic elements throughout the tour. In addition to learning about the history of this drink, you will also discover details about its production and learn about the different types that exist.

The Guinness brewery is divided into 7 floors and in each of them there is something that makes the visit special so that, contrary to what you might think about such a specialized theme, the final experience does not bore at all.

Highlights of the visit

When I visited the Guinness factory I did not know very well what I was going to find and the surprise was quite pleasant; so that your feeling is similar I will limit myself to review just some of the things you can see and do in the factory:

  • Learn about the four ingredients of the beer and the secret of its foam.
  • Enjoy a tasting in the Gravity Bar with panoramic views of the city
  • Learn how to pull a Guinness and get a diploma
  • Learn the secrets of a good beer tasting and practice it
  • Option to get personalized products from the Guinness Store
  • Learn about the relationship between this beer and the Guinness World Records .
  • Discover the secrets that have made this brand's advertising a success.

Book a tour of the Guinness brewery

Organize your visit to the Guinness Brewery in Dublin

How to get to the guinness storehouse.

The Guinness Brewery is located near St James's Station , about 20 minutes walk from the center of Dublin. If you are going by public transport, the 123 bus drops you off at the door. Access by car is also allowed and many tickets include the right to park, but I recommend arriving early in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid finding it full.

Opening hours

Barring any incidents, the factory is open to the public every day of the year except Good Friday, December 24, 25 and 26. The opening hours in winter are from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and in July and August you can visit the factory until 8:00 p.m. Please note that the last access to the public is always two hours before closing time.

Duration of the visit

The average duration of the visit is two hours . The brewery has a total of 7 floors including a rooftop bar to enjoy the views while drinking a beer, a floor where you can learn how to pull beer or a store with exclusive Guinness gifts.

Guided tours

There is the possibility of booking a guided tour of the brewery, but the facilities are so well equipped that I recommend you do the visit at your own pace by purchasing an audio guide at the entrance in your language for about one euro.

Where to eat

The factory facilities have two restaurants where you can take a break during your visit. These restaurants are Arthur's Bar and the 1937 Bar & Brasserie ; if you want to eat in either of them I recommend you to book a table in advance through the official website of the Guinness Storehouse. Also, without reservation, with the general admission you will have access to the famous Gravity Bar , located on the top floor of the factory and with panoramic views of Dublin.

Special Events

On certain dates, the factory organizes events or exhibitions inside, although it remains open to the public. It is interesting, for example, to visit the Guinness Storehouse on St. Patrick's Day.

Ana's Traveller Tip The visit to the Guinness Storehouse is also suitable for children: children under the age of 13 get in free of charge. Instead of a pint of beer at the end of the tour, they can enjoy a soft drink.

Visiting the Guinness Storehouse is one of the most popular experiences for anyone visiting Dublin. For this reason, it is common to find discounts on admission. One of the most convenient is the one that includes the Dublin Pass tourist card as it directly involves free entry to the factory.

The Dublin Pass also has as one of its main attractions the free use of the Dublin tourist bus for 24 hours, something that will perfectly complete your visit to the Irish capital. Guide To The Guinness Storehouse: Dublin’s Iconic Brewery Experience

Half of all the beer drunk in Ireland is brewed in the sprawling Guinness Brewery on the Liffey River. Not bad for what started out as a little family brewery in 1759.

The brewery itself isn’t open to the public. But the company’s Guinness Storehouse attraction will tell you all you want to know (and then some) about the brewing process and Ireland’s most famous export.

You’ll have one of the best pints of the “Black Gold” in Dublin with some stunning views to boot.

The storehouse is a fun, interactive experience in a rather theatrical setting.

iron and steel architecture of the interior

It’s built around a giant atrium shaped like a pint glass. If it were a real glass, it would hold 14.3 million pints of beer.

Try to hold back the cynicism over all the advertising. The whole place could be considered an over-the-top ad with ubiquitous Guinness branding everywhere you look.

Still, the place is pure fun and a mecca for beer connoisseurs. Some people might even be horrified at Guinness being called a mere “beer.”

This Guiness Storehouse guide tells you what to expect on a visit and what you’ll see and experience.

Quick Tips & Layout

  • The Storehouse can get very busy, especially during peak tourist seasons. You likely won’t be able to get in without a timed entry ticket .
  • To avoid crowds, visit when it opens at 10:00 am.
  • There are 7 floors to explore.
  • The Storehouse is packed with interesting exhibits, from the brewing process to Guinness advertising history. I’d budget about 2-3 hours to visit.
  • When you enter, you’re given a ticket for a free pint, which you can use at the Guinness Academy or Gravity Bar. Don’t lose your ticket!

Here’s the layout and what you can see:

  • 1st Floor: Arthur’s Lease, store
  • 2nd Floor: Guiness archive, Tasting Room
  • 3rd Floor: exhibits on the brewing process
  • 4th Floor: tasting rooms
  • 5th Floor: advertising, dining room
  • 6th Floor: Guinness Academy
  • 7th Floor: Gravity Bar

There are various visiting options.

You can buy a timed entry ticket and explore yourself, which is what my group did.

Alternatively, you can opt for 1.5 hour Connoisseur Experience . This is a popular tour during which you’ll explore every floor, have a private bar experience, and learn to craft your own pint.

You can also book a 2 hour guided tour called the Guinness Experience , where you’ll get a history lesson in the process.

You can also book a combined tour of the Guinness Storehouse and the Jameson Distillery . You’ll learn about how Ireland’s two most famous drinks are made, get a guided tour of the premises, and (of course) get a sampling of Guinness and whiskey.

Guide To The Guinness Storehouse: What To See

Let’s take a tour of the Guinness Storehouse, so you can drink it all in.

First Floor

You enter on the first floor.

This is where you can pick up an audio guide or shop till your drop at the well-stocked store. You’ll find every knick knack imaginable — golf balls, t-shirts, bottle openers, mugs, and cookbooks.

You can also see Arthur’s Lease. This is the famous 9,000 year lease signed by Arthur Guinness in 1759.

It secured the land at St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin for an initial annual rent of £45, allowing Arthur Guinness to establish the iconic brewery.

This document has become a symbol of the brand’s deep roots and commitment to Dublin.

room in the storehouse

Second Floor

On the second floor, you’ll find the Guinness Archive.

It houses a vast collection of historical documents, photographs, and memorabilia that tell the story of Guinness since its founding in 1759.

This archive is a treasure trove of information about the brand’s development, its brewing techniques, advertising campaigns, and its cultural impact over the years.

You can learn about the evolution of the Guinness brand, from its early advertisements to the iconic toucan campaigns.

Third Floor : Brewing

This is where you can dive into the nitty gritty of making Guinness.

See the hops and learn about the specialist strains of yeast used in this unique brewing process.

Guinness is made from four ingredients: barley, hops, yeast, and water. Exhibits explain where each ingredient is sourced and how it contributes to the beer’s flavor.

You’ll learn that rushing waters are a vital part of the brewing process.

Fourth Floor

One the fourth floor, you’ll also find the Tasting Room. It’s filled with futuristic-looking steam pods.

You can learn to identify the aromas in Guinness and sample a very small taste of the beer.

Fifth Floor

The 5th floor is dedicated to the iconic, and a bit surrealistic, Guinness ads that have gone down in advertising history.

You’ll see how Guinness essentially brainwashed people into buying alcohol.

These include the Guinness toucan, which became one of the most beloved mascots from the 1930s.

You’ll also see the “Guinness is Good for You” campaign, which was used to promote the beer’s supposed health benefits in the mid-20th century.

You can watch a selection of classic Guinness TV commercials, including the famous “Surfer” ad from 1999, which is considered one of the greatest TV ads ever made.

It’s all super interesting and you can’t help but feel nostalgic. Some of them are interactive and you can star in your own ad.

If you’re hungry, you can grab some grub at Arthur’s Bar and 1837 Bar & Brasserie.

Arthur’s Bar is a more casual pub-style dining space. The menu features lighter fare, such as sandwiches and bar bites.

1837 Bar & Brasserie, on the other hand, offers a more elevated dining experience with a focus on Irish cuisine. The name 1837 refers to the year when the famous pairing of Guinness and oysters was first recorded.

The menu consisted of of hearty dishes, many of which are laced with Guinness. The Guinness burger is rather famous. You can also take down some oysters and smoked salmon.

You should probably make a reservation in advance if you opt for the brasserie.

Sixth Floor: Guinness Academy

When you’ve finished poking around, you’re in for a treat: a beer tasting.

With your ticket to the Guinness Storehouse, you’ll get a free pint, and there are a few spots to claim it.

One of the most fun options is the Guinness Academy, where a Guinness “ambassador” will show you how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness.

If you’re lucky enough to avoid the queues (which can get long during peak hours), you’ll head straight into the Academy.

The first lesson? It takes exactly 119 seconds to pour the ideal pint.

You’ll start by filling the glass almost to the top – aim for the harp logo as your guide.

The bartender will give a quick demo, then it’s your turn. After the initial pour, let the beer settle before topping it off.

Once you’ve mastered the pour, you can proudly enter your name into a nearby computer and print out an official Guinness certificate to stick on your mantle place.

Seventh Floor: Gravity Bar

Last, but not least, you arrive at the Gravity Bar.

There are no exhibits here, but it’s easily the high point of the visit (haha). This is where you can enjoy your complimentary pint (or buy more if you’d like), all while soaking up panoramic views of Dublin.

The bar offers a unique vantage point over the city’s landmarks. Helpful information on the glass panels identifies the different areas you’re looking at, making it easy to explore Dublin from above.

You can also pose for a snap at the “Wish You Were Here” photo experience. It’s a fun feature that allows visitors to create personalized postcards.

You can pose in front of a digital backdrop showing Dublin landmarks or Guinness-related images.

Once the photo is taken, you can send it as a virtual postcard to friends and family.

Practical Guide & Tips For The Guinness Storehouse

Address : St. James’s Gate, Saint Catherine’s, Dublin 8, D08 VF8H

The Guinness factory is located slightly off Dublin’s south quays at St. Jame’s Gate.

You can get there by Uber, taxi, the 123 bus from Dame Street or O’Connell Street, or the Hop on Hop off tourist bus .

When you leave, there are plenty of taxis sitting outside or you can hire a horse drawn carriage.

The storehouse is open every day of the week, with the following schedule:

  • Monday to Thursday : 10:00 am to 7:45 am (last entry at 5:00 pm)
  • Friday and Saturday : 9:30 am to 8:45 pm (last entry at 6:00 pm)
  • Sunday : 9:30 am to 7:45 pm (last entry at 5:00 pm)

You must pre-book a timed entry ticket to avoid being turned away. The storehouse ins an incredibly popular attractions. And you can’t just walk in to have a beer either.

Entry is included in the Dublin Pass , which you can purchase for 1-5 days.

The storehouse is only a 15 minute walk from Kilmainham Gaol in west Dublin. This was my favorite thing to do in Dublin.

You’ll also need a timed entry to visit there. So you can plan one for the morning and one for the afternoon.
