About Black Sheep
Black Sheep Brewery was established in 1992 by Paul Theakston when the brewery run by his family for a number of generations was sold to a national brewery. Paul, the 'Black Sheep' of the family, set up his own brewery in the same town, Masham, to brew the highest quality beer.
Three decades on, Black Sheep Brewery has become an iconic Yorkshire brand, known for its quality beers across the nation and overseas. Along with famous beers, Black Sheep Ale and Best Bitter, the brewers continually innovate, and we now offer a huge variety of cask ales, craft beers, lagers and ciders.

“Thank you for being dog friendly” Review of Black Sheep Brewery Bistro
Over the years we’ve had lunch here after visiting the shop or the tour. We haven’t visited in a number of years because we kept having to leave our dog and as he’s aged it’s something we don’t want to do anymore. We went for a potter around Masham last month hoping to frequent a cafe, sadly both that were open didn’t allow dogs inside. We took a punt and walked to the brewery as it said the bar now allowed dogs. We’re so glad we did because we had a fantastic lunch. We were all made to feel very welcome (dog, toddler and two adults) and dogs are even allowed in the restaurant area now. We had a burger and pizza and both were absolutely delicious as were the warm drinks and ale. We found the “dog friendly” note a bit hidden on your website. Please make a song and a dance about it because it’s a huge positive to people. Considering The Dales is a popular dog holiday destination we were left frustrated with the lack of cafes that accept them.

My husband wanted to visit the brewery as he’s a fan of Black sheep. Car parking was a bit tight but we must have arrived at a good time as we managed to get one of the few remaining spaces. Lovely staff, very friendly and welcoming. Very good menu, however I fancied the prawn sandwich but they hadn’t received their prawn order that day, which was a shame. Instead, I had the posh fish finger sandwich, which was huge and very tasty. My husband had a couple of beer paddles, which he really enjoyed. We also purchased some beer to take home and there are some nice gifts in their shop. Lovely place, beautifully decorated for Xmas and has a really nice atmosphere. We would return and would recommend but best to book as it was busy.
The best meal I've ever had here! Absolutely amazing meal and service. 100% recommend when visiting Masham. The shop is excellent too with a good selection of gifts. I will certainly be back!! Keep up the good work BSB!! 👏
The Black Sheep Brewery bistro has gone from good to seriously needing some improvement. It is a shame that the Management Team don’t respond to reviews with some acknowledgement and response on what they plan to do to return this once lovely eatery back to the place it once was. Don’t waste your hard earned money would be my advice….find somewhere else with a more inspiring menu and a catering team that can cook simple , basic dishes well. Apart from wonderful beer this bistro has little to offer
Awful and disappointing….Avoid! Staying in the area our friend booked a meal 6.30 for 4. She was told they were “dead” and did not need to book. One of the group ordered a pizza and that was the only acceptable dish. I had Sea Bass, my friends had fish and chips and pork belly. My Sea Bass was so overcooked the skin was hard and black and I had 2 mouthfuls of the flesh which was dry and tasteless. The pork belly was tiny and also burnt and dry. The worst meal was the fish and chips, the batter was over cooked almost black and my friend had an upset tummy after trying to eat it. The only thing that stopped me sending mine back and complaining was the embarrassment it would cause to my friend who planned a pleasant evening for us. Today she regretted booking there at all. It’s obvious why they were “dead”, the kitchen needs a chef that knows how to make a £17.00 dish edible. I hope they realised when the plates went back.

“Good food & dog friendly” Review of Black Sheep Brewery Bistro
We popped in for a pint and some food- ribs & wings and a pizza. The food was good, the staff friendly & plenty of room for our dogs to sit in disturbed whilst we ate. The shop was also still open so we picked up a couple of souvenirs whilst there.

Having completed the brewery tour we ate in the restaurant and had an excellent meal with first class service. This is a must for anybody visiting the area.
We went on a quiet Thursday night, and despite it being really dark to walk to and find, there was a warm welcome. Lovely restaurant really nice staff and great food. The beer was fabulous, and the gravy with the steak pie is exceptional. Next time we may go and just order a pint of gravy! The scotch egg starter is sublime too!
After a tour round the local brewery, a meal in the same place seemed to be a good idea, and what a good choice, food with more drink.
Yummy food in a lovely setting! You won’t be disappointed! Nice to see a few vegetarians options as well, particularly trying the banana blossom for the first time as a take off from fish and chips. Lovely atmosphere too and friendly waiting staff too. Particularly enjoyed the small samples of beer after the tour too! The brewery tour is well worth a visit too! Thank you

A fascinating local story and good beer ! Fascinating tour, interesting for how the owner fought back against the big breweries and established a unique brand as much as for the insight into the brewing process. Tour was £9.45 for an adult (concessions available) and includes 3 x 1/3 pint beer so you can sample their wares.
