Best Singapore Zoo Itinerary (1-Day Trip)

zebra sg zoo, singapore zoo itinerary

Visiting the Singapore Zoo a decade ago and again in 2022 made me realize it’s an evergreen spot – you’ll never get bored of it. Like most of Singapore’s tourist spots , a lot has changed with the zoo, it’s bigger with the River Wonders addition.

While I paid much more this time at SGD $44 just for the Singapore Zoo (it’s SGD $50 as of 2023), I recommend it regardless of its price. Here goes my Singapore Zoo Itinerary for a 1-day trip! To those who haven’t been to this zoo before, River Safari is its latest edition.

Use this table to navigate this Singapore Zoo Itinerary.

Table of Contents

Is SG Zoo worth visiting?

Absolutely, there’s no second thought about it! The Singapore Zoo is one of the most visited places in Singapore and shouldn’t be missed out on. It’s an expensive ticket at SGD $50 per adult today, but it’s the experience you pay for.

It comes among the top 10 zoos in Asia on various sites and the best part is that it’s an open zoo! Most animals here aren’t in cages. Instead, they’re in large natural enclosures with moats around and hardly a-meter fences. Some animals like peacocks walk around you as you eat at the cafeteria.

As it costs a lot for just a ticket to the zoo, I’d recommend going for the multi-park or Park Hopper passes to get the best value for your tickets. Get your tickets from trusted sites like Klook for the best discounts. Here’s the best deal I found:

Singapore Zoo Itinerary: Things to Know

Best Time to Visit SG Zoo. The Singapore or Mandai Zoo timings are 8:30 am – 6 pm. Plan your SG itinerary so that you get there early before noon or anytime on the weekdays. With the zoo being absolutely vast, it takes a good five hours to walk through and peek at the animals here.

Thus it’s best to begin your tour at least around lunchtime (12 – 1 pm). The Mandai Zoo was my first stop on my SG trip before crashing at a Spacepod . It was already 11:30 am by the time I got there. So I had lunch quickly and began my wander around 12. Gladly, I could glimpse at almost all the animals and attend a few shows as well.

Zoo Ticket Prices and Offers

The SG Zoo ticket price starts at SGD $50. Instead of booking a single ticket, I’d recommend booking the multi-park tickets where you get to visit two parks (Singapore Zoo and another) for many reasonable rates.

Multi-park Ticket Prices (As of August, 2023)

  • SG Zoo / River Wonders / Jurong Bird Park: S$88 adult / S$60 child (Choose any two)
  • Night Safari + Any one of the above: S$96 adult / S$66 child
  • All 4 theme parks (Parkhopper Plus): S$118 adult / S$90 child

The best part about multi-park tickets is that they have a 7-days validity. So you can visit one park a day and the next within the following week. However, each parking ticket is only valid for one-time entry.

Where to book your tickets: While the official Mandai Zoo site allows smooth booking, I’d recommend booking through trusted sites like Klook for discounts and future offers for other attractions.

Being a Klook partner, our readers tend to get better prices. Don’t miss out on any deals and get your SG Zoo tickets today! Here are some splendid deals I found for you on Klook:

How to get there?

Address : 80 Mandai Lake Road Singapore, 729826

The Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, and Night Safari are all at the same spot at the mentioned address above. Jurong Bird Park is the only faraway theme park.

The cheapest way (and how I got there myself) to the SG Zoo is by taking the Khatib Mandai Shuttle. Get to the Khatib MRT Station NS14 (the Red Line) and step out to the bus stop. Walk towards the left end of the bus stop and you’ll find the Mandai reserve posters around.

The Khatib Mandai Shuttle arrives every 10 minutes at the stop and costs S$1 for a one-way trip straight to the zoo. Use the EZ-link or NETS Flashpay cards for your ride. You can return to the Khatib MRT station back with the same shuttle from SG Zoo.

Singapore Zoo Itinerary for the Park

Get your SG Zoo map as soon as you get in. You’ll find these at the entrance and all around the park. If you didn’t get one, all the posted maps have a QR code where downloading the map on your phone is an option. This is the first thing I did when I got in, wary about missing anything at the zoo.

singapore zoo map

There’s no hard and fast on where to begin, but as long as you cross all paths, it should be fine. At one point, I realized I’d missed out on a path on the other end of the park. Luckily, all visitors have access to the trams and I got to visit most animal sanctuaries.

Treetops Trails

This was my first stop as it was the closest trail upon entering the zoo.

Made up of neat wooden bridges where at first you’ll find nothing. But when you look carefully above, you’ll find the main feature here – the Siamang Primate swinging!

There’s also the Malayan Gharial here, but I didn’t get a chance to see it. I was busy watching the Siamang swing.

I didn’t have to stress my eyes, they were right before my eyes chattering and lazing on the sands by their tiny river! Their glass display is perfectly at the intersection of two paths, and I chose to walk toward the Babirusas

While returning back in the evening from the other path, I couldn’t help but have another glance at the cute otters!

Anoa, Babirusa, and Hippos

Walking on the left path, you’ll find the Anoa (a dwarf buffalo breed), Babirusa, and Hippos. The Anoa and Babirusa are hard to have a closer look at.

Not to mention, I thought the Babirusa was a statue when they were just sleeping. The hippos, however, are a wonderful sight. Its facts all over the walls and the hippos themselves camouflaged among the large smooth rocks in the water are fun to watch.

Australasia

The Australasia part was all about Kangaroos – the tree kangaroo, wallaby and so. This place had a double-door entrance to have a peek at them.

What I loved most was how there were no cages in sight. The large mammals hopping with their large hind feet before it was extraordinary. There was a screen here that explained the marsupial’s baby’s premature growth in the mother’s pouch.

Tigers and Rift Valley of Ethiopia

I was unsure if I’d get a glimpse of the tiger but there it was! It lay lazing on the grass right after its moat. Then I moved through the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia finding varieties of primates here. The meerkats were the most interesting of all as they stared at people from their tiny island.

There were the Hamadryas Baboons with large pink butts and a LOT of them, the De Brazza’s Monkey, and the Douc Langur that looked like they had pants on as they moved high on their ropes! Make sure to look down at the large fishes at the Garden Pavillion when walking over the tiny wooden paths.

I remember catching sight of the Colobus Monkey (the peculiar black and white coated ones) but I couldn’t get a shot of it.

‘Rainforest Fights Back’ Shows at SG Zoo

I was just in time for the Rainforest Fights Back show in the Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre. All shows are inclusive on the tickets for visitors and all are pretty amazing. It reminded me of Jurong Birds Park with the Macaws here. Don’t miss out on the shows if possible.

When I visited the Rainforest Fights Back, not many people were there, but the show was amazing. It began with small monkey breeds walking down the ropes, and pigs, followed by Macaws and other birds swooping over the audience!

There was also a white snake that they asked for a volunteer to hold. At the end of the show, I got closer looks at the Macaw as the trainers fed them and also the snake as it lay on its wooden board.

Other shows to attend:

  • Splash Safari (Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre)
  • Animal Friends (KidzWorld Amphitheatre)

Elephants of Asia

Right after the Amphitheatre are the Elephants of Asia. There weren’t any large elephants here, but I got a close look at them. With the enclosure in a semicircle, there were many viewpoints for the elephants no matter where they were.

Unlike other places I’d seen elephants, I loved watching the elephants free here without anything strapped to their legs. One was having the time of its life scratching its head to a fake log.

Feeding the elephant is an option here, but like all feeding sessions at the zoo, it costs extra and you’ll need to book your slots here.

Take a Tram Ride!

While the tram is perfect for a slow open drive through the park, use the tram only to get to the attractions. You’ll miss out a lot if you get around with just the tram – walking gives the best experience of the zoo.

The tram is inclusive for visitors. I used the tram after exiting the Elephants of Asia as I had to get to another side of the zoo. And so I went! The tram’s open on the top as well with a voice immersing us in the animal exhibitions we passed.

Wild Africa

Getting off the tram, the Wild Africa part is actually wild with cheetah, white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, leopards, and majestic lions!

However, it’s a sleepy part of the zoo where it’s quiet and most animals sleep and graze throughout the day. Yet I found myself staring at rhinos and cheetahs with awe. They were all so close!

The most exciting was the lion that slept no more than a few meters away from us beyond the glass enclosure! Other animals here were the naked mole rats in their burrows (I found them personally scary though), the red river hog, and the Madagascar Fossa. Oh, and there were meerkats here again!

Reptopia (Reptile Garden)

Walking under the heat throughout, the Reptopia was a relief with the dark air-conditioned center. The relief ended when I started walking past snakes camouflaged in branches, mushy frogs staring back at me, and exotic lizards like the Northern Caiman Lizard.

Some I didn’t even know existed like the snake-necked turtle and the fish with legs! The most blood-curdling part was the outdoor section (Reptile garden) with giant lizards, large-beaked birds, orangutans on branches right over my head, and ducks and tortoises on the deck sides.

Fragile Forest

This was a sweet part of the zoo that started with butterflies flying all over. While we weren’t allowed to touch them, they could still come and sit on us… and some did!

There were birds with pretty crests that walked on the paths, parrots, cute mousedeers, and peacock pheasants. Upon the bridge, kids were also petting the friendly lemurs! All the animals are friendly here thus making it my favorite part of the zoo.

Chimpanzee and Macaques

Towards the end of the zoo were the Celebes Crested Macaques that appeared to have perfect haircuts 24/7 and chimpanzees that sat together like a family. I stood and pondered what they discussed.

On the other side of the path was the Rainforest KidzWorld with the carousel. Here there were usual farm animals like goats and rabbits, so it doesn’t matter if you don’t visit it. However, there is a KFC here if you’re hungry.

African Penguins and Ah Meng Restaurant

Walking back, I went through the remaining bits of the zoo. I stopped at the African penguins and the large swans (I hope they’re swans). The African penguins, unlike most penguins, don’t need a cold environment and walked comfortably at a normal temperature.

They were fun to watch as they dove in the waters. Coming back, I walked through the infamous Ah Meng Restaurant. The restaurant was closed at the time. Fun fact, Ah Meng is the name of a Sumatran Orangutan illegally smuggled from Indonesia but was later given shelter at the SG zoo.

Singapore Zoo Quick Tips

That concludes my Singapore Zoo Itinerary. Towards the final bits, Singapore Zoo is popular internationally for its exhibits. So all kinds of people visit it. Here are some tips to go smoothly about your trip, keeping in mind all kinds of travelers:

  • Keep a whole day for the Singapore Zoo . No kidding, it takes a full day to visit the zoo. Moreover, it’s an hour’s journey from the city center if you’re taking the MRT and shuttle. If you have a tight schedule, at least keep a good 6 hours including transport.
  • Keep your bag light! I just had an average backpack but it still felt heavy to walk with.
  • Plan your zoo tour keeping the show slots in mind . The zoo is large and takes time to get around. To attend the shows, note the timings and get there 10 minutes early – make use of the tram if needed.
  • Buy your feeding session tickets beforehand . To those interested in feeding the animals, it typically starts at S$8-10 per food portion. Book your add-on passes on the Mandai website.
  • Wagons and wheelchairs at SG Zoo . For toddlers, strollers are allowed in. The SG Zoo also facilitates wheelchairs for the disabled and elderly. Renting wagons for older kids is also available on the official site.
  • Refreshments at the zoo . Water dispensers are available around the SG Zoo. For soft drinks and orange juice, you’ll find vending machines near the rest areas and restaurants.
  • Where to eat? You can plan to eat at the Ah Meng Restaurant between 10 am – 4:30 pm inside the restaurant. There’s also a cafeteria with a number of restaurants at the entrance of the zoo.

Protip for Budget Travelers

Eating at the zoo wasn’t on my plan. Being on the lookout for a cheap place, I found an average yet perfect budget-friendly food stall – the Khatib Foodshop. I had dinner here while returning from the zoo on Khatib Shuttle and lunch while I was on my way to the River Safari.

You’ll find this at the Khatib MRT station right at its entrance. I got a decent chicken rice meal for S$2.5 – $3.5 back then. Right beside the Foodshop is 7-Eleven if that’s your type of food.

Tailpiece to Singapore Zoo Itinerary

That sums up the Singapore Zoo Itinerary. After eating at the Khatib Foodshop, I checked into my backpackers’ hostel in Lavender by 7 pm. It was a splendid full day trip and quite a tiring one – my legs were paining with all the walking. In the end, the whole trip was worth it.

I hope this itinerary helps you plan your SG Zoo trip as well. Let me know how it goes, I’ll be more than happy to listen! And last but not least, I believe my readers should have a better experience than I did with my itineraries. I built a travel checklist to keep your trip in order.

Tips for the best time at Singapore Zoo

Tips to make the most of your time at Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo is one of the best zoos in the world to take your family and is a must-see when you’re in Singapore . Visiting a zoo in  Asia’s tropical climate requires a little more planning than usual, so to ensure you have the best time here is our Singapore Zoo review.

With our top Singapore Zoo tips, you’ll know what to take, when to go plus more, so you can have the best day out.

Table of Contents

1. Best time to visit Singapore Zoo

Singapore is close to the equator so temperatures are hot and humid with average temperatures of 26 to 27°C all year round. Singapore is at its driest in the middle of the year, while November to January are the wettest months.

If you can manage it, try to visit Singapore Zoo during the week as it is usually busier on weekends.

2. Arrive early to Singapore Zoo

We arrived at 8.30am and spent five hours at the zoo which was fantastic. It was good to arrive early as it is a bit cooler and there weren’t as many people. The crowds started flowing in around late morning, especially on weekends. We were all exhausted by the end from a day of sightseeing in the heat, with jetlag to top it off. If you’re up for it, you could easily spend the whole day here.

3. Have breakfast with the orang utans

One of the best things we did at Singapore Zoo with the kids was to have breakfast with the orang utans. Never has meal time been so fun, educational and entertaining.

Breakfast at our house often looks like there have been wild animals at the table, so we knew we’d feel right at home having breakfast with the orangutans at Singapore Zoo. This, however, is one breakfast we will never forget, for all the right reasons.

Singapore Zoo is the only place in the world where you can have breakfast with orangutans! Imagine sitting at a dining table enjoying a buffet breakfast with your family and watching the orangutans make their way through the trees to their platform right in front of you.

There is plenty on offer to keep you and the kids happy for breakfast, with a wide array of local and international dishes available. To make the most of your time there, get there early so you have time to eat before the orangutans arrive.

The buffet breakfast is comparable in food, drink, and cost to having a buffet breakfast in a four-star hotel in Singapore.

Once breakfast is over, you’ll get to find out all about the orangutans and line up to have your photo taken with them. Make sure you take your camera as you are able to take your own photos. Alternatively, you can buy the professional photos the Zoo takes.

To make sure no one gets bored in the lineup, staff bring around a young python for those brave enough to hold.

Sadly orangutans’ are now critically endangered due to their rainforest habitats disappearing from deforestation and land clearing for pulp paper and palm oil plantations. Breakfast is a great way to experience these magnificent animals and help them at the same time.

TIP: While we’re talking about orang utans, whatever you do, don’t stand underneath them at the free ranging area next to Orang utan Island or you just might end up being showered in pee! Urgh!

4. Plan your day at Singapore Zoo

Plan your day so you have the opportunity to see some of the wonderful animal shows where you can learn from the keepers about the animals and their habitats. Try and stick around after the shows as you may just get the chance to have a photo with one of the animals.

There are also animal feedings you can take part in during the day where you can purchase food and feed the animals at specific times with the help of a zoo keeper. Check your zoo guide for the most updated times.

5. There is always a chance of rain

Bring a raincoat or umbrella as there is always a chance of rain in Singapore. There are lots of sheltered areas which you can stand under but you probably don’t want to get stuck in the one place for too long. It rained a few times while we were at the Zoo in June but the short showers didn’t cause us any problems. If anything it cooled us down. If you forget your raincoat you can always buy a poncho at one of the gift stores.

6.  Take water for everyone

Don’t underestimate the amount of water you will drink in the hot and humid conditions. Head to Ah Meng Bistro and just near RepTopia to fill up your water bottles at the filtered water dispensers. It’s much cheaper than buying it plus you help the environment and the animals.

If you forget, there is water available to buy in cafes and kiosks. Take extra water as it is a huge zoo and we sometimes were nowhere near a cafe or kiosk when our water ran out. There are a lot of drink vending machines around but they only have soft drink (even though one bottle looks like water but instead is an electrolyte drink).

7.  Protect yourself from insects and sun

Put on sunscreen before you leave the hotel as it’s easier without the humidity to contend with. If you burn easily you will need to reapply during your visit. Hats are a must and bring along sunglasses if you use them. Being in a jungle setting, there is plenty of shade.

The thought of mixing sunscreen, insect spray and humidity didn’t really appeal to us, so we tried out mosquito bands and found they worked really well. The zoo has in place preventative measures to reduce the mosquito population, so the problem isn’t bad. You will still however need to use mosquito spray or bands.

8. Hire a stroller or wagon to get around Singapore Zoo

There are several options for getting around Singapore Zoo. It is easy to walk around the entire zoo, however if you have young children or ones that tire easily, you may want to consider  hiring a stroller or a wagon . There are paved pathways throughout the majority of the park, which are accessible by stroller and wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available at the park entrance free of charge.

If you’re sick of pushing, pulling or dragging your boys, hop on a guided tram ride. Cost around $5 per adult and $3 per child for unlimited rides.

9. What to wear to Singapore Zoo

If you’re not used to life in the tropics, you’ll find that a day outside in the wrong clothes and shoes will make things very uncomfortable. Looser cotton clothing works best, as it can breath. While lightweight shoes with socks are really good at absorbing moisture, and not rubbing or making your feet too hot.

Make sure you  bring swimmers  for the kids so they can enjoy the water playground at Rainforest Kidzworld. They’ll love the opportunity to cool down and have fun.

10. Nappy changing and feeding

You’ll be pleased to know that Singapore Zoo has several nappy changing facilities and rooms for nursing. Take a look at the park map  for locations.

11. Save money and time by buying your tickets online

Save money off the ticket price when you buy your tickets online. It will also save you having to line up which is a real pain. We bought ours directly from Singapore Zoo online but you can buy elsewhere.

We loved our visit to Singpore Zoo and would definietly go back if we had the chance. I hope you liked my tips and review for Singapore Zoo.

How to Get to Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo is located on Mandai Lake Road, directly across from River Wonders Singapore.

You can get there via public transportation (bus or MRT) or ride a private vehicle.

Via MRT

To get to the Singapore Zoo via MRT, take the North-South Line and alight at the Khatib MRT Station.

From there, you can board bus service 138, which will drop you off right at the zoo’s doorstep.

The entire trip is a smooth and scenic 15-minute ride.

Via Bus Transpo

If you prefer a bus ride to the Singapore Zoo, the primary bus services to look out for are bus numbers 138, 927, and 926. The bus routes will take you to the Mandai Lake Road bus stop.

The zoo is just a short walk from there.

Via Private Car

If you prefer to drive to the Singapore Zoo, you can set the park’s address as your destination using your GPS device. The park’s address is 80 Mandai Lake Rd, Singapore 729826.

If you’re coming from Singapore’s downtown area, begin by heading north. Take the Central Expressway (CTE) and merge onto the Seletar Expressway (SLE).

After a while on the SLE, watch for the exit sign for Mandai Road. Take this exit, leading you directly to the zoo’s vicinity.

If you’re coming directly from or within Changi Airport, head west on Airport Boulevard and follow the signs for the TPE (Tampines Expressway).

Merge onto the SLE (Seletar Expressway) from the TPEs. The SLE will take you to the northern parts of Singapore.

As you continue on the SLE, take the exit onto Mandai Road, which will lead you closer to the zoo’s location.

Fun Things to Do in Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo is not your typical zoo. It’s a place of wonder, education, and, most importantly, fun.

The zoo’s well-designed layout and the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals make it an educational and entertaining adventure for all ages.

There are so many exciting things to do here that you’ll want to plan your visit carefully to make the most of it.

Let’s dive into the top activities and attractions.

best day to visit singapore zoo

The Night Safari is one of the most unique and thrilling experiences you can have at the Singapore Zoo.

This is the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park, where you can explore the animal kingdom after the sun goes down.

You have two options here: hop on a tram that will take you on a magical journey through the park or embark on a foot safari to see nocturnal creatures up close.

The Night Safari is a mesmerizing journey into the world of nocturnal animals, and it’s an adventure you won’t want to miss.

Tour around Singapore Zoo in a Tram Ride.

If you want to see more without wearing out your sneakers or if you have little ones with you, the tram is your perfect companion.

My experience riding the tram at the Singapore Zoo was delightful. It’s like taking a leisurely drive through the heart of a wildlife wonderland.

As the tram gently glided along the tracks, I felt a sense of excitement building.

The knowledgeable guide onboard shared fascinating insights into the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts, all delivered with an engaging and personable touch.

One of the first sights that greeted me was the majestic white tigers. These creatures are awe-inspiring, and it was an unforgettable moment to see them lounging in regal splendor.

With the tram’s open design, there’s nothing but a rail between you and these captivating animals. It’s an opportunity to admire their beauty without intruding on their space.

best day to visit singapore zoo

If you’re visiting the Singapore Zoo with little adventurers in tow, there’s something extra special waiting for them: the Kidzworld!

This dedicated area is designed to entertain and educate children while providing a safe and enjoyable environment. Kids can get hands-on with animal encounters and even try to be a zookeeper for a day.

But the highlight for kids of all ages is the Water Play area. It’s the perfect recipe for kids to expend their boundless energy while learning about the animal kingdom.

Enjoy a jungle breakfast.

Who doesn’t dream of having breakfast with orangutans? At the Singapore Zoo, that dream can become a reality!

The Jungle Breakfast experience lets you dine in the company of these incredible creatures. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to get up close and personal with the orangutans while enjoying a delicious breakfast spread.

As you savor your meal, you’ll witness the orangutans swing from the trees and exhibit their playful antics.

It’s an unforgettable experience that both kids and adults will cherish. It’s not every day you get to enjoy breakfast with such remarkable neighbors.

Participate in animal feeding sessions.

Ever wanted to get closer to the animals and learn more about their lives? The Singapore Zoo offers daily animal feeding sessions that make this possible.

These sessions are a fantastic blend of education and interaction, allowing you to engage with the animals under the watchful eye of their keepers.

From feeding the graceful giraffes to watching the keepers interact with the majestic elephants, these sessions provide a deeper understanding of the zoo’s inhabitants.

It’s a chance to see the animals up close, appreciate the hard work that goes into their care, and learn about the importance of wildlife conservation.

Watch captivating animal shows.

The Singapore Zoo hosts several captivating animal shows throughout the day. These performances allow you to see the animals in action, learn about their behaviors, and better understand their natural habitats.

The shows come in two categories: the Splash Safari with its playful sea lions and dolphins and the Elephants at Work and Play show, where you can witness these majestic creatures’ incredible strength and intelligence.

Engage in educational programs.

The Singapore Zoo isn’t just about fun and games; it’s also a hub for education and conservation.

Here, you can participate in various educational programs that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation and the critical work at the zoo.

These programs include behind-the-scenes tours, wildlife photography workshops, and talks led by dedicated keepers and researchers.

These educational activities will give you insight into the zoo’s efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.

When you’re finished with your meal, you can step out onto the terrace to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest and the enchanting ambiance of the Night Safari.

Chomel Bistro is where you can dine in a tranquil garden setting, surrounded by the zoo’s beautiful flora and fauna.

This bistro not only provides delicious food but also offers a picturesque backdrop for your meal. It’s the ideal place to unwind and soak in the ambiance of the Singapore Zoo.

The menu at this diner features a range of local and international dishes.

You can relish classics like the ever-popular chicken rice or venture into Western delights like fish and chips. It’s a versatile dining experience that can cater to diverse tastes.

In addition to main courses, Chomel Bistro also serves delightful desserts and beverages.

Chawang Bistro

Chawang Bistro is named after one of the zoo’s iconic elephants. It combines the pleasure of dining with the satisfaction of contributing to wildlife conservation.

The menu at Chawang Bistro offers a variety of Asian and Western dishes, allowing you to explore a blend of flavors.

You can savor local delights like Singaporean-style curry or opt for classics such as spaghetti Bolognese. Regardless of your choice, the meals are prepared with quality ingredients and a focus on taste.

There are 3 ways to reach Singapore Zoo: the MRT & Mandai Khatib Shuttle, Bus 138, and Taxi.

For first-time visitors, I recommend the MRT & Mandai Khatib Shuttle. It’s budget-friendly and easy to navigate.

If you’re near Ang Mo Kio district, Bus 138 is a good choice. For a quick and convenient trip, a taxi is the way to go.

Below, I’ve detailed these three options to help you decide.

Mandai Khatib Shuttle Bus

To get to Singapore Zoo, take the North-South Line MRT to Khatib Station. Go out through Exit A and take the Mandai Khatib Shuttle to the zoo. The bus fare is just SGD $2 and the travel time is around 15 minutes.

The Mandai Khatib Shuttle offers a loop service directly between Khatib Station and Singapore Zoo.

It operates from 8:00 AM to midnight, with departures every 10 to 20 minutes.

You can pay the fare using an EZ-link or NETS FlashPay card , as cash is not accepted.

Below, I’ve provided a step-by-step guide on how to take the MRT and Mandai Khatib Shuttle to the Singapore Zoo.

Khatib MRT Station Exit A

1. Board the North South Line to Khatib MRT Station and then look for the Exit A. After you go the exit gate of the MRT station, you need to turn left.

Singapore Bus 138

The second way to go to Singapore Zoo is by taking Bus 138 . You can catch it at Ang Mo Kio bus terminal. The fare is SGD $1.72 with an EZ-link or NETS FlashPay card, or SGD $2.50 in cash. The trip takes about 39 minutes.

Bus 138 operates from 6:00 AM to 11:45 PM, leaving every 6 to 17 minutes.

Note that Bus 138 isn’t a direct route to the zoo, making about 29 stops before arriving.

Below, you’ll find detailed instructions on how to take Bus 138 to Singapore Zoo.

1. Catch the North South Line to Ang Mo Kio MRT Station and then look for the Exit C. From the Exit C, take the escalator down.

Taxi to Singapore Zoo

For the fastest and most convenient journey to Singapore Zoo, simply hop in a taxi and relax. This convenience, however, means you need to shell out extra money.

To make your transportation easier, here’s my suggestion.

Singapore Zoo Animals

Visit Singapore Zoo for a real adventure among the wild.

It’s home to over 4,200 animals, including kangaroos, lions, white tigers, and more, all roaming freely across 14 zones in a 28-hectare park.

You’ll see everything from orangutans to crocodiles and penguins. The zoo also has 2 exciting shows.

I’ve explored every corner and can’t wait to share what each zone and show offers.

First up, let’s explore the Wild Africa zone!

African Lions, Cheetahs and African Painted Dogs

Wild Africa shelters a lot of African lions and cheetahs. These big cats welcome you to the zoo with their strong physique and distinct features.

Also, part of this zone are the African painted dogs, which are known for their rare fur colors.

Leopards, Giraffes, White Rhinoceros and Zebras

This area is also filled with fierce leopards and distinct wild animals like zebras, giraffes, and white rhinoceros.

So, if you’re a fan of them, take a tour around this place.

Meerkats and Red River Hogs

Look at these cute creatures! Meerkats habitually live underground to take care of their babies.

On the other hand, red river hogs often hang around the streams and ponds.

Douc Langurs

Primate Kingdom is where you’ll see different monkey species in various sizes and colors.

For one, you’ll catch sight of some douc langurs, which are recognized for their vibrant features.

Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs

Did you know that black-and-white ruffed lemurs are considered as endangered species?

Likewise, these hyperactive creatures walk, run, and jump all day long. After their tiring activities, they seek food with the help of their long tongues.

Colobus Monkeys and Cotton-top Tamarins

Just like the black-and-white ruffed lemurs, colobus monkeys are known for their striking colors. These species are also tagged as rare kinds of monkeys, together with the cotton-top tamarins.

So don’t miss this chance to witness these creatures personally when you tour around Singapore Zoo.

White Tigers

Tiger Trek gathers a unique breed of big cats. Instead of the ordinary reddish-orange cats, the place is filled with white tigers.

Distinctly, these animals have royal blue eyes that perfectly complement their white fur.

Also tagged as Bengal tigers, their unique color is a result of rare genetic mutation.

Pygmy Hippos

Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia is a zone occupied by various mammals including the pygmy hippos. These animals love to play around swamps.

However, they aren’t much aquatic compared to the typical hippos.

Malayan Tapirs and Rock Hyraxes

Malayan Tapirs look like pigs slash elephant features. But even with their structure, they are actually from the horse species.

On the other hand, rock hyraxes are part of the elephant and manatees classification.

Both species love to swim, so you might catch them sunbathing during your visit.

Hamadryas Baboons and Gibbons

This area is also packed with monkey species like Hamadryas baboons and gibbons. These animals have inimitable characteristics.

Hamadryas baboons are intelligent creatures with strong body structures.

Likewise, the gibbons are hailed as the gymnast of the wild because of their elongated arms.

Pelicans and Cassowary

These bird species often wander on the grounds instead of flying.

Distinctively, cassowaries are part of the few bird groups who can’t fly. Despite that, these creatures are fast runners, good jumpers, and excellent swimmers.

Proboscis Monkeys

At Treetops Trail , you’ll encounter some proboscis monkeys hanging around the trees.

It’s not difficult to locate them because of their long nose structure.

They may be strange-looking but their unique features are actually very useful.

Their nose helps them in attracting mates and warning their fellow species.

Siamang

These black-colored primates are quite known for their fierce personality.

They can easily defend their family members with the help of their strong bodies. Because of that, they are dubbed as the swinging king and queens of the wild.

Bornean Orangutans

Continue your Singapore Zoo adventure at Orangutan Island .

Here, you’ll run into some Bornean orangutans. These tree-dwelling mammals are characterized by their long, reddish hair.

Comparatively, the male Bornean orangutans have larger and higher cheeks than the females.

Sumatran Orangutans

Just like Bornean orangutans, Sumatran Orangutans spend most of their time on trees. With sturdy arms, they can easily move back and forth up above like Tarzan.

Most Sumatrans orangutans have lighter hair color and longer beards.

Grey Kangaroos

If you see some big, muscular creatures hopping in Australasia , chances are, they are grey kangaroos. These animals can go as high as 2 metres and weigh up to 66 kilograms!

But, they might not be as active as other animals during the day because they are nocturnal.

Tree Kangaroos

Tree kangaroos are not your ordinary type of hopping species.

Instead of constantly leaping on solid grounds, they tend to stay and gallop on trees, hence their name. Their small structure makes it easy for them to climb around.

Chimpanzees, Mandrills, Celebes Crested Macaques and White-faced Saki Monkeys

Singapore Zoo’s Fragile Forest offers a diverse range of animals, from monkeys to birds.

Spot some chimpanzees, mandrills, along with some Celebes crested macaques and white-faced sakis.

Most of these monkey groups act and think like humans, so don’t underestimate them.

Lesser Mousedeer and Squirrel

As you continue with your tour, you’ll pass by a group of lesser mousedeer. These animals are tagged as the world’s smallest hoofed mammal.

In addition, there are squirrels in this area. Most of them are just enjoying their food while strolling around.

Common Crowned Pigeons and Eclectus Parrots

Also, part of the community are these vibrant bird species.

Common crowned pigeons are famous for their nest-like crest and blue features.

The eclectus parrots, on the contrary, got a multi-colored body.

Even with the differences, both bird species are very intelligent.

Malayan Flying Foxes

These unique creatures never go unnoticed. Malayan flying foxes are very distinct because of their fox-like features.

Plus, they are very large compared to the typical bat species.

Raccoon Dogs

At Frozen Tundra , you will run across some raccoon dogs.

But did you know that they are actually more associated with the fox species than raccoons?

These creatures are highly active at night and feed on both plants and small animals.

African Penguins

When they communicate, you might think you’re hearing a donkey.

But think twice because these are aquatic birds called penguins. These animals are not just great swimmers but also outstanding hunters!

Elephants

Elephants of Asia is another highlight in the Singapore Zoo that deserves a visit.

In this zone, you will be surrounded by the gentle giants. Elephants are the largest land mammals that could weigh from 5,000 up to 14,000 lbs.

Despite their size, they primarily feed on plants and fruits.

Komodo Dragons and Horned Lizards

Reptile Garden greets you with a variety of large lizards like komodo dragons and horned lizards. These two are branded for their strange-looking appearance.

The komodo dragons, from the name itself, give you an idea of their powerful features.

The horned lizards also come with unique characteristics. And when they spurt blood from their eyes, beware because they consider you as a threat!

Indian Gharials

Aside from eating, this is how Indian gharials spend most of their days. These slender animals from the crocodilian species often reside in clear rivers.

Dyeing Poison Frog, Panther Chameleon, Parson’s Chameleon and Green Tree Python

If you’re looking for a place full of reptiles, then RepTopia should be part of your must-visit list.

Here, you’ll have a great encounter with golden poison frog and electric blue gecko.

There are also emperor scorpion, king cobra, and alligator on display.

Each of these reptiles has its own characteristics that make them stand out. Most of these animals can easily survive on their own.

Giant Tortoises, African Spurred Tortoises, Radiated Tortoises and Ploughshare Tortoises

Tortoise Shell-ter welcomes you to the dwelling of different types of tortoises.

Ready yourself as you come face to face with giant tortoises. These animals take pride in having the longest lifespan among all other vertebrates.

Also, on the list are African spurred tortoises, radiated tortoises, and ploughshare tortoises. These are recognized because of their unique shell color.

Ponies

Rainforest KidzWorld is such a fun destination loaded with some cute ponies.

Ponies are small horses with firm bodies and short legs. Compared to typical horses, they are gentler that’s why they are popular as pets.

On top of that, this place shelters other animals such as hedgehog, fancy rats, goats, ferrets, and more. Most of these creatures are on the milder side, making this area great for kids.

And make sure to try the zone’s special experiences like Keeper’s Chit-chat and Animal Friends Show.

Aside from animal exhibits, there are 2 shows in Singapore Zoo to look forward to. These are not just enjoyable presentations but also informative ones.

So, don’t miss these shows during your visit.

Australasia

Australasia

Hop over to Australasia at the Singapore Zoo to check out adorable marsupials from Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, and its surrounding islands. While many will be familiar with the land-dwelling grey kangaroos found here, some may not know of the tree kangaroos from Papua New Guinea. At this zone, you can meet a small tree kangaroo family (Makaia, Nupela, and their joey) as well as wallabies from Australia.

Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia

Get a slice of Ethiopia’s dramatic landscapes at the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia exhibit. Here, agile Nubian ibexes and Hamadryas baboons deftly navigate steep rock faces. Look out for more critters in the crags of the exhibit: meerkats, rock hyraxes, and South African ground squirrels are some you might see. Don’t forget to visit the dwelling huts made of mud and stone to see what life is like in Ethiopia’s Konso and Amharic villages too.

Primate Kingdom

Primate Kingdom

Primates rule at the Primate Kingdom! Here, each species of monkey, lemur, and tamarin gets its own island where they play, rest, and forage. Watch the unusual white-faced saki monkey as it leaps from tree to tree and keep your ears out for the black howler monkey. The primates here tend to be active and frisky, making this zone a must-visit.

Slither and slide to RepTopia, where more than 60 species of reptilians and amphibians reside. Here’s where you can see the majestic king cobras and reticulated pythons up close. There are many colourful creatures too: like the electric blue gecko, golden poison frog, Amazon milk frog, and ever-changing veiled chameleon.

Wild Africa

Wild Africa

Love Disney’s The Lion King ? You can meet Singapore’s very own Simba (now quite grown-up) at Wild Africa. He stalks this zone with four other majestic lions, alongside the fastest animal on land, the cheetah. Funny enough, these big cats live almost next door to their natural prey like zebras and giraffes. Don’t overlook the beautiful African painted dogs and mysterious fossas too.

Get wet and wild

Get wet and wild

Your trip to the zoo is not complete without watching Splash Safari. This presentation stars a lively Californian sea lion doing what it does best – making a splash! Watch the sea lion glide and leap through the water, balance a ball on its nose, and perform other entertaining tricks. Presentations happen daily at 10.30am and 5pm at the Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre – come prepared to get wet.

Hear from the keepers

There’s no one better to learn about the zoo’s animals than the keepers. These experts care for their charges day in and day out – and are more than happy to share through the zoo’s keeper talks. Multiple talks are held across the zoo’s zones: learn about cute meerkats at Wild Africa (1.30pm daily), majestic Malayan tigers at the tiger exhibit (2.40pm on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday), friendly elephants at Elephants of Asia (11.30am daily), and more. Check out all the keeper talks here .

They’ll get the chance to go behind the scenes with the zoo’s animal care team to learn the ins and outs of animal husbandry and enrichment. The program caters to both kids (6 to 12 years old) and juniors (13 years old and above).

Have a barn experience

Meet lovely barn animals at Rainforest KidzWorld, a special section in the zoo for family-friendly animal experiences. Besides goat feeding and falabella (the world’s smallest breed of horse) grooming demonstrations, kids can also pet rabbits and guinea pigs at Buddy’s Barn. Parents, a word of warning, your kids may ask to adopt a rabbit after this experience.

Inuka Café

  • Restaurants

Located on the north-western side of the island, the Singapore Zoo is a haven for wondrous wildlife and a must-visit for animal lovers.

This beloved establishment first opened its gates to the public in 1973, and has since become one of the best rainforest zoos in the world.

Besides being home to over 2,800 animals from 300 species—including crocodiles, Malayan tapirs and white tigers—the zoo has won a trove of international and local awards.

These include plaudits from Forbes Traveler as one of the best zoos in the world, the Asian Attraction Awards for Most Popular Attraction in the Wildlife Park category and the STB 22nd Tourism Award for Best Leisure Attraction Experience of the Year. It was ranked as one of the top 3 zoos in the world by the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award in 2018.

Singapore Zoo: All You Need to know about the Zoo

All You Need to know about Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo is widely regarded as one of the world’s top zoos. In addition, both animals and guests will be happy here. This zoo is proud of the fact that they try to keep animals in places that are as close to their natural habitat as possible.

More than 2,500 species of animals, including endangered ones, may be found here. The Singapore government provided a $9 million subsidy for the construction of this enormous animal home. The zoo also celebrated its 40th anniversary this year.

Since the zoo officially opened, there have been no incidents of animals harming visitors. This is a place where safety is a top priority. Water-filled ditches with clear glass walls are used instead of cages and fences.

Tourists will not get disoriented despite the size of the area since there are plenty of signs pointing them in the right direction. Visitors will be able to decipher what’s going on even if they don’t speak English.

The zoo’s recreated habitats are of great importance. As an example, you can visit the Ethiopian valley, the jungles, and the deserts while on your travels.

On the other hand, Singaporeans are also big fans of strolling around the zoo all day. This is a popular spot for residents to have weddings and anniversaries, as well as intimate rendezvouses. All of these services are officially provided by the zoo’s management.

Visitors like how easily they can get to the zoo. Because the park is so extensive, you may want to take a “tram” trip to get a sense of where you want to go first. If it suddenly starts raining, you may hide beneath one of the many awnings around the area.

If, on the other hand, you’ve had enough of the blistering heat, there’s an air-conditioned area for you. In addition, you’ll find soft-drink coolers all throughout the place. If you’re willing to pay a charge, of course.

A wide variety of performances featuring animals are held in the zoo.

If you’d like, you may help feed the inhabitants; upon arrival, you’ll be given a schedule of animals to consume. The “Night Safari” program, Jurong Bird Park, and Butterfly Park are also options.

Visit the animals that call the Singapore Zoo home and learn about their lives. Admission to the Singapore Zoo includes a guided tram tour. You can see pandas, elephants, tigers, lions, and so much more! From a glass observatory or a raised platform, you can watch the animals in all their glory.

What to watch at Singapore Zoo?

It takes at least a whole day to view the zoo in Singapore, and it is much better at night when the night safari begins. The daytime program continues in the nearby night zoo, which is a separate animal park.

You may enjoy the dusk from the comfort of an electric train, where you can see wildlife like night owls, while another person takes a walk, which is certain to be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

The day zoo’s grounds are enormous. Wagons are welcome here as well, but seeing the local wildlife on foot is recommended to avoid missing anything noteworthy. You’ll receive beautiful photo frames as a gift.

There are lions, giraffes, zebras, hippos, tigers (including the extremely rare white tigers), tens of thousands of monkeys, and countless more creatures. A kangaroo, for instance. The Singapore Zoo is awe-inspiring to visitors from all around the world. Some creatures, like Proboscis monkeys, are only found here and nowhere else.

Locals on the island of Borneo referred to these unusual animals as “Irish,” an insult. They were given this moniker because of their likeness to the earliest colonialists from Ireland, who had red skin, huge bellies, and extended noses.

Only in Malay Borneo can these monkeys be found in nature, although they are usually extinct in zoos, with the exception of Singapore’s zoo, where they are well cared for.

The Komodo dragon is another one-of-a-kind exhibit at the zoo, which can only be found in the wild on the two small islands of Komodo and Rincha in the Indian Ocean. Monitor lizards from a long time ago are still around as silent reminders of the past.

For animal lovers and scholars alike, the Singapore Zoo offers an unbridled opportunity for exploration; even after many visits, you’ll find new surprises and delights lurking around every corner.

A visit to the Singapore Zoo during the dry season ensures you do not have to worry about Singapore’s infamous rains and sultry weather. That said, you should always be prepared for an occasional downpour and light showers; in short, Singapore’s unpredictable weather.

Singapore Zoo Timings

When is the best time to visit Singapore Zoo?

Singapore zoo5 singapore zoo guide singapore zoo travel tips singapore zoo tips

With such large-scale zoo, you should spend all day (about 18-20 hours) to visit by the complete way.The Singapore Zoo is a place that attracts crowds of tourists when they come to Singapore, especially at festivals, so you should book 3-4 days in advance to ensure your tickets are available for your family or friends.

Singapore_Zoo

You should begin your tour in morning around 8:30 am to enjoy the Jungle Breakfast, open from 9:00 to 10:30 each morning. For this “special” breakfast, you need to book 24 hours in advance to reserve a place and help the zoo staff serve. You will have breakfast with the wildlife. They can be orangutans which seem to be vicious cruel but extremely gentle or feed the elephants while the zoo staff is bathing for them.

Jungle Breakfast

In case you have breakfast at a hotel or restaurant in Singapore, you can start your trip at noon. But do not be too late when it is becoming sunset. Because you will probably miss a lot of shows here, and then, the time of the tour so tight that you are not comfortable at all!

Besides the daytime activities, what is interesting about Singapore Zoo?

Night Safari1

The tourists often spend all day visiting this large zoo. Because of not only the day but at night, a very interesting and exciting tour will take place. This is a trip to see the animals in Night Safari. This is the first and only night zoo model in the world.

Animals in Night Safari

This strange trip will open at 19:30 every day and is very attractive to tourists although the price is slightly more than a day. You probably do not know, but over 90% of mammals are active at night. So the best time to see the beast is at night because this is the time when they are most active. You should bring the binoculars to see animals from far away. However, do not bring a flashlight or take a picture with the flash, because the light here is designed enough to observe that the animals do not recognize your presence, while the flash will only affect their instincts only.

Night-Safari-Singapore3

You can buy your own Night Safari ticket if you do not have enough time or just want to see this special tour. In case you want to combine visit the zoo in the morning should buy the Combo package to save money.

Ensure the safety of both yourself and the wildlife?

Singapore zoo2 singapore zoo guide singapore zoo travel tips singapore zoo tips

You must absolutely stand within the safety line and do not touch the animals (unless permission of the zoo staff or signage). In the Singapore Zoo, there are hundreds of statues that simulate wildlife, and you can touch or take pictures comfortably without having to worry about it.

Singapore zoo

You also do not feed the animal. Because the mammals here have been carefully designed the meals, the addition of food to them inadvertently imbalances the diet. Not to mention, the act of throwing food at animals is not good at all, sometimes making them “misunderstood” that you are attacking them.

What do you need to note while carrying children with?

Singapore zoo3 singapore zoo guide singapore zoo travel tips singapore zoo tips

A zoo is always a place which attracts for the children. If you take your children on a trip to Singapore, the zoo is definitely not to be missed. You should watch them in all activities to avoid being lost, especially on the occasion of crowds. Not to mention, children are extremely hyperactive, they can touch whatever they are curious about. So keep an eye on the fact that it is never over. Please do not leave them out of the safety line!

The singapore zoo1

When children are tired of going around to see the animals standing idle, take them to the circus with the hilariously fun stuff done by dancers who are wildlife. In addition, there are always interesting kids exchanges, such as the hula hoop. Surely the little things will keep them happy. There is also an amusement park dedicated to Rainforest Kidzworld children. Remember to bring swimwear, glasses for children!

Singapore zoo4 singapore zoo guide singapore zoo travel tips singapore zoo tips

In the park, there are special facilities for babies and infants. These are trolleys, the rent is about 9 SGD. In case your kids are a bit older, they are tired of walking after a long walk, and you are tired of carrying them, let’s rent a tow truck, at around SGD 15.

Food and souvenir: What is noteworthy?

Singaporea Zoo Ah Meng singapore zoo guide singapore zoo travel tips singapore zoo tips

There are many restaurants, cafes in the zoo, but most are self-service cafes. There are KFB, The Wild Deli, or Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop with basic items like Hainanese chicken rice, fried chicken, and Laska. There are the dessert fruits, ice cream, and pastries. The Icy Slush stores sell a lot of tasty, creamy ice cream in the park. But you can eat well before you start your journey to be able to walk sightseeing and save time, be more interested offline!

There are many souvenir shops on the premises, which are very cute gifts that are suitable to bring back from Singapore. Do not forget to choose a few items.

What should be prepared for the complete tour?

Travel bag

The tropical weather is quite unstable. You should bring sunglasses and sunscreen to avoid the harmful light when walking all day. And do not forget to bring your umbrella or buy poncho cloaks for sale outside of the zoo, in case of unexpected happenings. Insect repellent is also indispensable for the trip to the “pristine primeval forest” in the park more complete.

Sunglass

Although there is a signboard in the zoo, you should always carry a map with you to travel and save time. At the Singapore Zoo, people do not tear tickets but use an electronic table to control the tickets, so you also need to bring tickets alongside you throughout the journey. Do not throw it away to protect the environment, otherwise, you will be annoyed by the poor sense of littering indiscriminately in Singapore.

Singapore zoo ticket

For a walk in the park, you should take a pair of slippers or a pair of sports shoes which are tidy and dynamic fit for you. You have to avoid wearing bulky shoes, high clogs that disrupt the journey.

In the park, the photographer is always there to give you the best shots, but you should bring your own camera to capture the moment and surprise throughout. Moreover, carrying a personal camera under can save a lot of money compared to having a photographer.

The Senior Citizens’ Concession Rate is $16. It’s stated that “If Guests wish to purchase admission tickets with the Local Resident’s Discount or Senior Citizen’s Concession Rate whether at our ticketing counters or through online purchase, proof of identity in such form as we might require must be produced upon purchase of admission tickets and/or at the point of entry to our Parks.”

Top things to do at Singapore Zoo

1. jungle breakfast with wildlife.

Do you want a more interactive breakfast than the buffet in your hotel? Come to Singapore Zoo at 9:00 AM and your family can have breakfast with not just one but an entire family of orangutans. The Ah Meng Restaurant serves a buffet breakfast with a wide selection of Asian traditional foods and tropical fruits which provide you enough energy and refreshment to start your day. While having breakfast, you can see the mummy orangutan breastfeeding her baby or the orangutans showing affection to each other. Once you finish your meal, the professional photographer is always ready to take photos of you with the orangutans. That's such a memorable experience, isn't it?

2. Enjoy the shows at Singapore Zoo

Just observing the animals is definitely not enough in Singapore Zoo. There are 4 shows where the animals perform their amazing hidden talents alongside their trainers: Splash Safari Show, Animal Friends Show, Elephant Presentation, Rainforest Fights Back Show.

best day to visit singapore zoo

If you don't have much time, we recommend you to see the Elephant Presentation because you may be able to feed them at no cost. The elephant-keeper presenters will share with you some interesting facts and personalities of their 5 female Asian elephants.

Show in Singapore Zoo

If you have kids, they probably will enjoy the Animal Friends Show or the Splash Safari Show better. These shows allow kids to interact with the animals like dogs, cats or sea lions and inspire kids to love and care for all animals.

3. Come and observe the 5 must-see animal exhibits

Frozen tundra.

After enjoying your breakfast, you may want a little bit of cold air for a refreshing day. Few walks away from Ah Meng Restaurant to the entrance direction, there is a brand new exhibition called Frozen Tundra. Put your jacket on! You’re going through the ice cave to meet the animals whose habitat is extremely cold. They are the Japanese raccoon dogs named Porn and Poko, and their sibling wolverines, Boris and Ivana. They can be as cute as our doggy friends at home, but also as fearless as wolves when they scare the bigger predators.

best day to visit singapore zoo

The white tigers

The white tigers are rare and special because their white fur is the result of a mutated recessive gene. Sadly, in the wild, white tigers are less efficient predators and are vulnerable to stealth. In contrast, in Singapore Zoo you can catch many happy moments of these blue-eyed “wild cats” in which they are swimming in the moat, playing with each other or simply just sunbathing.

best day to visit singapore zoo

Australasia

The name Australasia reminds you of the Australian animals, doesn't it? You're partly right! In this walk-in exhibit, you can expect to see different types of kangaroos and wallabies, who came from not only Australia but also in New Guinea and the Americas. There is another species you may never meet before: Cassowary - the bird that pictures an ostrich mixed with a velociraptor. However, Singapore Zoo does not allow visitors to touch them as they are capable of inflicting serious injuries. Therefore, you can only stay close to take photos.

The Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia

This is an area that not many people expect to see, but it's going to bring you to another level of experience. This zone is inspired by the real Great Rift Valley and its biodiversity, including the life of local people. You will get to know the Konso culture, the ethnic minority in Ethiopia, from housing to farming activities, even the effigies of their deceased.

best day to visit singapore zoo

Significant animals to Ethiopia are Nubian ibexes, the Hamadryas baboons, banded mongooses, black-backed jackals, and rock hyraxes. You could be amazed when you observe the way these animals engage with each other: freely and human-like.

The black-backed jackal at Singapore Zoo

Elephants of Asia

If you are a frequent visitor to Asia, you may have seen elephants being kept in a small stable, being used to carry people or serving at the circus unhappily most of the time. Different from other countries, in Singapore Zoo, they are playful and friendly. These giant animals love chilling out with each other, spraying water on their friends or rolling down in the mud. If you come to see the Elephant presentation, there is an opportunity for you to feed them without extra cost.

4. Hop on the tram

If time is an issue for you, getting on an audio-guided tram is a faster way for you to get around the zoo and decide which zones you would like to look closer. The tram normally attracts many small children, because it is painted with the color of an animal’s fur, such as a zebra or tiger. So hopping on the tram is one of the top things to do at Singapore Zoo to the kids. A ticket with unlimited ride costs SGD $5 per adult and SGD $3 per child under 12 years old, separated from the admission ticket.

However, Inspitrip understands that your time is valuable and saving your budget is critical as tourist attractions in Singapore are often over-priced. When you purchase the admission ticket to Singapore Zoo on Inspitrip, as a bonus, you can have one free tram ticket!

Essential tips from Inspitrip

  • In order to save your time queuing, you can purchase Singapore Zoo entrance ticket online via Inspitrip . There are many types of tickets for different activities, and apparently, Singapore Zoo is really huge and touristy. Therefore, you should pre-plan your visit. When you arrive, just show your e-ticket at the checkpoint. Remember to pick up a map at the main entrance which will be very helpful to navigate your way throughout the park.
  • Wear your most comfortable pair of shoes and carry a refillable bottle of water to keep you from dehydrated.
  • It is best to visit the park on a sunny day. However, don't forget to apply or bring along with you sunscreen and sunglasses. You can also carry an umbrella in case it rains suddenly.
  • If you have many pieces of luggage, you may be asked to store your belongings in a locker or at the reception.
  • If you feel unwell or need help, don't hesitate to reach out to the Guest Relations Officers located throughout the park.
  • There are cafes and shops inside the park so you can get a coffee, ice cream or a pair of sandwich at any time.

Whether or not you are an animal lover, you still should visit Singapore Zoo because there are many other things to do there, not just watching the animals. Fans, showers, icy treats: How the Singapore Zoo is helping animals beat the heat

best day to visit singapore zoo

SINGAPORE - Adi looked like he was doing a rain dance.

With the sun hanging high overhead, the Bornean orang utan did a little jig with his arms stretched high towards the sky.

Soon enough, the “rains” did come, and Adi welcomed the cooling water with his mouth wide open.

These showers were not from the heavens, but from hoses wielded by zookeepers at the Singapore Zoo.

With El Nino’s warmth projected to make the already warm months of April and May even hotter, the Zoo is rolling out a raft of measures – including hosing down their animals more often – as a respite from the heat.

“Ice-based enrichment”, or fruits and vegetables frozen in ice blocks, are also given to the animals to keep them mentally and physically engaged during hotter periods, said Dr Luis Neves, vice-president of animal care at Mandai Wildlife Group, which manages the four wildlife parks, including the Singapore Zoo.

Zookeepers also ensure that animals always have access to fresh water within their exhibits, he said, and animal care teams monitor the animals under their charge closely.

“Besides ensuring sufficient shade in the habitats and providing water sources, we adjust activities such as outdoor training to earlier or later parts of the day when it is cooler, where necessary,” Dr Neves said.

Dr Neves was responding to queries from The Straits Times, following ST’s earlier report on March 31 that highlighted how April and May – among the warmest months of the year – could get hotter due to the lingering effects of the climate phenomenon known as El Nino.

He added that measures to keep animals cool had been built into the wildlife habitats and support areas, given Singapore’s location in the tropics. He said: “The animals are provided with a variety of shaded areas within their habitats and access to support areas.”

These support areas are places located at the back of each exhibit, where the animals can sleep and rest. Most of these support areas are installed with fans to cool the animals down and hoses that the zookeepers can switch on to provide the animals with showers when the days get hot.

But Dr Neves noted that some animals – such as orang utans, elephants and pigs – are more vulnerable to heat. These animals have certain features that make them more prone to overheating, such as thick body hair, or the lack of sweat glands.

Zookeepers monitor these animals even more closely to ensure they are coping well with the higher temperatures.

“Orang utans have thick body hair coats, which can cause their core body temperature to rise and overheat if exposed to elevated temperatures for prolonged periods,” said Dr Neves.

Head zookeeper Jeremy Chew, 50, said his team monitors the orang utans closely and hoses them as and when required, more so during the warmer periods.

Zookeepers also actively look out for signs of heat stress, including panting, a lack of appetite and ruffling of body coat fur or feathers, according to Dr Neves.

“Checks are conducted daily, with increased frequency for species that are more vulnerable to heat such as orang utans, elephants, pigs, as well as younger and older animals regardless of species,” he said.

As for elephants and pigs, these animals do not have sweat glands, so their bodies have difficulty regulating temperature under prolonged exposure to extreme heat , Dr Neves added.

During a particularly sunny afternoon on March 20, Asian elephants Aprila and Gambir were seen digging into their icy treats.

Using their trunks, they would drop blocks of ice filled with fruits and vegetables onto the ground, so that the blocks would shatter into chunks of icy watermelon, carrots and durians, making it easier for them to munch on the sweet treats.

Red river hogs enjoy their frozen treats just as much as the elephants. Chari and Chinko – who are brothers – were observed biting into and breaking the ice blocks to get to the carrots and honeydew slices embedded within.

The habitat in which the red river hogs reside includes a small pool where they can swim and play in, as well as support areas where they sleep and rest.

Zoo animals got quiet, exhibited nighttime behavior during total solar eclipse

Scientists and zookeepers watched Monday as giraffes, gorillas, lions, macaws and flamingoes exhibited unusual behavior during the total solar eclipse .

Because total eclipses happen so infrequently , researchers don't know much about how they impact animals. They studied animals on Monday at several zoos situated along the eclipse path of totality , such as the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas. Animals were largely calm at the Fort Worth Zoo, though some, including the gorillas, lions and lemurs, showed increased signs of vigilance and curiosity.

"Most importantly, we did not observe any signs of increased anxiety or nervous behaviors," a Fort Worth Zoo spokesperson said. "And by the time totality had passed, things went back to normal, almost immediately!"

Several animals at the Fort Worth Zoo made their way toward their barn doors, which is where they go at night, as the skies darkened during the eclipse, the zoo spokesperson said. The Aldabra tortoises, giraffes, elephants, kudu, bonobos, coatis and gorillas all headed toward their barns.

Zoos were also able to observe some unique daytime behavior from nocturnal animals. At the Fort Worth Zoo, a ringtail cat and two owl species showed increased activity during the day.

Also in Texas, zookeepers at the Dallas Zoo saw giraffes and zebras run around during the eclipse. Chimpanzees patrolled the outer edge of their habitat at the zoo while all but one of a bachelor group of gorillas went to the door they use to go in at night.

An ostrich at the Dallas Zoo laid an egg during the eclipse. Other birds got louder before totality, then went silent. Flamingos and penguins huddled together.

Birds also showed unique behavior at the Indianapolis Zoo, a zoo spokesperson said. Macaws, budgies and other birds got quiet and roosted up high, which is nighttime behavior.

"You can hear they're totally silent now - not a peep, and no movement," Indianapolis Zoo President and CEO Dr. Robert Shumake said in a video recorded during totality.

Flamingos at the zoo huddled together and also got quiet. Cheetahs and a warthog displayed behavior normally seen during the evening. The cheetahs paced at the highest point of their grassy yard during the eclipse while a warthog waited at its back gate.

At the Philadelphia Zoo, which was not on the path of totality, visitors observed the animals during the partial eclipse, CBS Philadelphia reported. Visitors were able to sign up with zoo staff, pick an animal to observe and use their phones to track behavior before, during and after the eclipse. Most of the zoo's animals seemed pretty unfazed by the partial eclipse.

Researchers also studied zoo animals during the 2017 solar eclipse . In a study published in 2020, researchers noted they'd reviewed the behavior of 17 species — mammals, birds and reptiles — at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina, during the eclipse. They said around 75% of species showed a change of some sort in response to the eclipse. They largely exhibited behaviors usually seen in the evening or at night, with some animals showing signs of anxiety.

Zookeepers and researchers in the U.S. won't get a chance to do this kind of research during a total eclipse again until 2044 , when the next total eclipse in the contiguous U.S. will happen. Just three states are on the path of totality for the Aug. 23, 2044 eclipse, according to The Planetary Society .
