General information

Location and accommodation Awarradam Jungle Lodge is located in the beautiful Surinamese interior, at the foot of the Awarradam rapids. The lodge is built-in traditional Saramacca style and is situated on an island.

Sustainable principles Environmental-friendly principles are applied at the lodge. The staff comprises friendly Marrons from the Saramacca tribe. Comfortable accommodation: The fresh air in the evenings creates a comfortable atmosphere, and mosquito nets are used for protection. Lighting is generated by solar energy, and meals are prepared on a wood fire with local ingredients.

Environment and activities Various activities include a visit to the 'Peti' rapids, where guests can enjoy a refreshing water massage and relax in hammocks. The Villages

You'll recognize the villages with a hanging palm leaf, a gateway (azanpau) that must keep evil influences outside the village.In every traditional village you will find a meeting room, a central sacrifice site and a hut that inhabit local women for a number of days during their monthly period.The Saramaccaners have maintained their culture very well, and that you'll also "taste" during your walk through the village. In Kajana there is a school and an outpatient clinic, and in Ligolio there's also a school.The Head Captain of Langu lives in Stonhuku, and the area also includes many Captains and Basjas.The community has a lot of contact with Paramaribo, so only items are regularly supplied. Many Saramaccaners, especially young men, work in Paramaribo, French Guiana or with the pork knockers, and in their spare time they "supply" the family. During your stay at the Awarradam Eco Resort, you have the privilege to visit the Böö Kamia Jungle Spa, a relaxed, professionally managed Wellness Center. The Saramaccans - Awarradam, Suriname

Awarradam is located on a small island in the Gran Rio river deep in the heart of Suriname. To get there we fly to the remote and isolated Saramaccan village of Kajana then proceed by boat up the Gran Rio river to Awarradam island. This area is inhabited by the storied Maroon tribes who escaped Dutch slavery more than three hundred years ago by retreating into Suriname's forbidding interior.

Their 18th century West African traditions have been uniquely evolving for centuries and it is our incredible privilege to meet a few inhabitants of this vibrant community and get to know their way of life.

A visit to Awarradam is a wonderful opportunity to explore a dense and pristine rainforest packed with birds and wildlife, spend time along (and in) the river and its many rapids, and simply unwind for a few days while swinging in a hammock and watching the peaceful river flow by.

Day 1 - Arrive Suriname

SCHEDULING NOTE: Arrive in Suriname on Saturday to participate in the 8 day tour which flies to Awarradam on Monday morning for a four-night stay there. Alternatively, arrive in Suriname on Wednesday for the 7 day tour which flies to Awarradam on Friday for 3 nights there. Overnight at Hotel Krasnipolsky

Day 2 - Paramaribo City Tour

We'll start our city tour this morning with a magnificent view of Paramaribo from the famous Wijdenbosch bridge over the Surinaam River. We continue to the old inner city of Paramaribo for an in-depth visit to the ancient building complex of Fort Zeelandia. We continue by foot to Independence Square with its grassy malls surrounded by historical buildings. Then we drive past some of the most prominent historical buildings of Paramaribo and then finish our tour in the early afternoon at Waterkant along the Surinaam River, a favorite meeting place for many Surinamese. Optional guided activities may be arranged for the afternoon, or you can take time to wander around on foot to explore the narrow streets on your own. (B)

Day 3 - Depart for Awarradam

Today we head by car to the Zorg en Hoop airport for our flight out to Kajana (Kai-Yana), approximately 50 minutes by air from Paramaribo. Our plane lands on a grassy airstrip deep in the jungle where we will be met by a representative of the local village. Then we'll walk to the end of the airstrip, climb down a few stairs to the river's edge, and board one of traditional Saramaccan wooden canoes waiting to carry us 30 minutes upstream to the island were Awarradam is perched.

Upon arrival we'll be given a hearty welcome in the Saramaccan style then offered an orientation to the area, the lodge and its history. The rest of the day is relaxed (as you will soon be, too) as we become acquainted with this quiet and remote place. Your private riverfront cabin is built in the traditional Maroon A-frame style but is outfitted with modern conveniences such as mosquito nets, a private toilet with shower, and solar powered lighting. Each cabin has a river-facing balcony with hammocks, offering a beautiful view on the water and towering forest. The building material is taken mostly from the surroundings to ensure harmony with the local environment.

Lunch is served at community-style tables in the main lodge, our first chance to get a taste of the locally grown fruits, vegetables, and tubers that make up the traditional Saramaccan diet. Western tastes are catered to, and special diets can be accommodated if plenty of advance notice is given.

In the afternoon you can walk around the island to get a feel for your surroundings, take a nap in your balcony hammock, look for birds and monkeys, chase some of the colorful iguanas and lizards that scurry across the grounds, or share some time with your fellow travelers in the breezy shade of the riverfront terrace. The evenings are spent in an atmospheric ambiance with kerosene lamps and the meals are prepared in the local manner with primarily local ingredients. On your first night the guide will provide information about the Saramaccan culture and the history of Awarradam. (B,L,D) Overnight at Awarradam

Day 4 - Rainforest and River Excursions

After breakfast, we take you on an informative and adventurous jungle walk. While you are enjoying the environment in the pristine tropical rainforest, the guide provides information about the various trees and plants and how you can recognize animals by their sounds and footmarks. After a sturdy walk back to the jungle lodge, lunch will be served after which you have the opportunity to enjoy leisure time by swimming in the rapids, paddling in a dugout canoe or relaxing in a hammock.

The local people call the rapids near our island Awaadan.Awaa (Awara) is an orange-colored palm fruit and dan (dang) means rapid. Awarradam lies in the Gran Rio River which merges with the Pikin Rio River, 30 km upstream. At this point the Upper Surinaam River begins, flowing out into Brokopondo hydro lake, 75 km upstream. The water level in the dry season can almost be 6 meters lower than in the rainy season!

In the late afternoon, we depart by dugout canoe to Stonhuku, the farthest village in the living area of the Saramaccans, followed by a walk in the jungle through various small villages to Kajana village. During this trip you have the opportunity to get to know the local people, their culture and lifestyle. Upon arrival in Kajana, we are met and greeted the village authority and invited to enjoy dinner and a performance of cultural singing and dancing. The guide will explain the songs and the dancers will greatly appreciate it if you try out their dance style yourself! After the cultural evening, we depart by dug out canoe for the return trip - under a brilliantly starry sky - to Awarradam. (B,L,D) Overnight at Awarradam

Day 5 - Rainforest and River Excursions

A full day for an adventurous trip on the river awaits us. After breakfast, all necessary goods for the trip are loaded in the dug out canoe and you depart to Gran Dam, the largest rapid, north of Kajana. We have the opportunity to relax in the magnificent seething rapids, take beautiful walks in the area and more adventurous travelers may try to prove themselves by floating or swimming through the rapids (depending on the water level). Picnic lunch served under the trees makes for a perfect afternoon of rest and relaxation. All day you will see the animal inhabitants of the forest such as howler monkey, arras, parrots, toucans, stick bugs, boat-billed herons, piranhas, maybe even a crocodile basking in the sun on the riverbank. Day 6 - Depart Awarradam, Return to Paramaribo

As always, fresh coffee and tea is delivered to your cabin at sunrise, waiting on a small shelf outside your front door. The morning is free to relax, paddle in a dug out canoe, swim, take a short walk in the forest or just swing in your hammock and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the rainforest. Awarradam staff will offer a musical farewell in their traditional manner then we'll depart with the dug out canoe for the Kajana airstrip. Lunch will be served at the small community shop at the airstrip, then we board our "Otter" for the return flight to Paramaribo.

Tonight we are on our own to refresh ourselves at the comfortable hotel and head out for a night on the town. It may come as a bit of culture shock after our time in the rain forest, but Paramaribo's night life can be quite exhilerating and exuberant, with bars, restaurants, and casinos open all night long. Day 7 - Depart Suriname

Most international flights depart before noon and you'll be driven to the airport with plenty of time for check-in formalities. If you're headed on to Kaieteur Falls in Guyana you'll depart from the Zorg-en-Hoop municipal airport, while those making their way to French Guiana will take an early-morning one- to two- hour drive drive to Albina on the Moroni River before crossing over to France. Other international flights depart from Pengel International Airport.

We offer numerous options for extended exploration around Paramaribo, including two- and three- day trips to Galibi to observe the leatherback turtle nesting beaches, day trips to local swamps and tidal areas with extraordinary birdwatching opportunities, deeper exploration into historic plantations and fortresses, and privately curated/guided tours to visit local artists, musicians, and cultural programmes that are not commonly available to casual visitors.

These hearty people will give you a taste of the many pleasures in life in the coming days. Look forward to traditional food and folkloric music and dance.During a walk/trek you’ll pass various villages where you can perceive the lives of the local communities in all of its aspects. Souvenirs are on sale not only for the memories of this wonderful trip, but purchasing them help in the economic development of the local population. Moreover you will see their agricultural plots which they cultivate for their livelihood. Besides all these cultural aspects, you also come in contact with nature; you can peacefully bathe in one of the rapids or just lazily lie between the trees in a hammock. If you’re lucky then you’ll see a cayman doze on one of the sandbanks. You can find more action by trekking through the jungle, which also lets you gain knowledge of the plethora of flora which the rainforest is abundant with.

Day schedule Awarradam – 3 nights (Friday – Monday)

You set out from the local airport Zorg & Hoop in Paramaribo to the airstrip in Kayana, about a 60 minute flight south of Paramaribo. There Maroons will bring you to their “korjaal” (boat made from a hollow tree trunk – a sort of large canoe) that will take you over the Gran Rio to your vacation destination. It is a 30 minute boat ride to the island – the Awarradam resort, at the foot of the Awarradam rapids. After checking in and familiarizing yourself with the staff, lunch is served.In the afternoon you can explore the region and pleasantly relax in the rapids. You’ll recognize our resorts eco foundations. Our co-workers on the scene are friendly Maroons from the Saramaccan tribe and your jungle lodge is built in the traditional style. The brisk evenings make an air-conditioner or a fan redundant, but you do have the comfort of a “klamboe” (mosquito net).You’ll spend the nights with ambient lighting and your meals are made “à la maroon’, with mostly local ingredients. The first night the guide will introduce you to the Saramaccan culture.

After breakfast you will have an informative and adventurous “jungle walk”. While enjoying yourself and as you take in the unspoiled tropical rainforest, the guide describes the trees and plants and how you can recognize animals by their sounds and tracks.After lunch you will visit the rapids “Peti”. You’ll be able to swim, explore the area peddling in a ‘korjaal’ or enjoy the splendid view of the rapids from your hammock.After dinner you will boat (in the dark!) to a maroon-village where the inhabitants treat you to a cultural song and dance performance. The guide will explain the lyrics while the dancers invite you to join in.Under a tropical starry sky (unless it’s cloudy) our boatmen carry you back to the jungle lodge.You will be perplexed by their nautical abilities!

Today you will have the opportunity to fully enjoy the river as well as the local culture. You will visit the largest rapids in the area, the Grandam. During the boat trip 75 minutes downstream, you’ll experience the events on the river, which to the local community is their life stream. There they stop, greet each other and groceries are delivered. You’ll see people fishing, washing up and doing the dishes. In between the villages you’ll be able to enjoy nature and, with a little luck, you’ll even see a cayman napping on or near a sandbank. At the Grandam you’ll go ashore. You’ll have the opportunity to explore, swim in the rapids and enjoy yourself from your hammock. After the sumptuous picnic lunch, you’ll head back. In the afternoon you’ll have an extensive walk along the various villages. Along the way you’ll get even better acquainted with the culture and lifestyle of the maroons. The local community will gladly sell you some locally made souvenirs. Maybe you’ll recognize the dancers, singers or spectators of the cultural night. They’ll surely recognize you!

In the morning you’ll be able to again paddle in a korjaal, swim, have a walk through the forest or just peacefully enjoy the sounds of the jungle. Afterwards our co-workers bid you a traditional farewell. A korjaal will bring you back to Kayana, for the flight back to Paramaribo.

The Kasikasima Expedition Tour is ideal for adventurous nature lovers who love a challenge. The tour starts from Paramaribo to Palumeu, a jungle resort along the Upper Tapanahony river, near an Amerindian village ofthe same name. The following day, a boat trip will take you on a jungle track of 5 days on the river and into the Amazon rainforest. The beauty of this trip is that you will enter a pristine part of the rainforest, via the Palumeu River, at which you will cross over various rapids and sleep in camps, in hammocks. Starting out from the base camp, idyllically situated at the foot of the Sawaniboto rapids, you will climb to one of the peaks of the granite Mount Kasikasima. This walk and climb through the jungle takes approximately 7 hours, to and from, at which you will spend one hour at the top. The magnificent view over the "roof" of the Amazon rainforest is incredible. After the track, you will return to the Awarradam jungle resort for 3 days. This small idyllic island, hidden in the Amazon rainforest, at the foot of the Awarradam rapids, lies at a distance of a half hour by boat from the last village in the living area of the Saramaccans, the largest Maroon community in Suriname. The Maroons are descendents from slaves who, after a heroic fight with the former slave-owners, managed to establish living communities in the Amazon rainforest. These historic facts make Awarradam an ideal place to visit, not only for nature lovers but also for those who wish to learn more about the West African culture as it has remained in Suriname. An unforgettable experience during this tour is a boat trip by night, under the endless starry sky, which will take you to the nearby village of Kosindo for an authentic cultural evening of singing and dancing.

9-Day Roundtrip Highlights of Suriname – Awarradam Prices on request and nowhere cheaper! Day 1: Arrival Arrival at the J.A. Pengel airport (Zanderij) of Suriname. Bus transport to your hotel in Paramaribo. You will stay in Eco Torarica. Day 2: City & Shopping Tour Today’s programme is a City & Shopping tour by Tuk Tuk so you can enjoy all the lovely things that Paramaribo has to offer you. Learn about the rich history of the ‘Wooden City’ which has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. During this extensive City & Shopping tour, you will for instance visit Fort Zeelandia, the Central Market, the gold jewellers, the famous Mosque and Synagogue, the Cathedral and the Independence Square, and you can shop in the popular Hermitage Mall. You will stay in Eco Torarica. Meals included for this day: breakfast and lunch. Day 3 – 6: Awarradam Tour Awarradam is a small, idyllic resort on an island in the Amazon rain forest, at the foot of a fantastic rapid. It takes about half an hour to sail to the settlement of the Saramaccaners, the largest Marron community in Suriname. These facts make Awarradam the ideal resort, not just for nature lovers but also for those who wish to become acquainted with the culture of the Saramaccaners at a calm pace. Transport The transport to and from Zorg & Hoop airport is included. The flight takes about one hour from Zorg & Hoop airport in Paramaribo to the airstrip at the village of Kajana. Here you transfer to an open korjaal and arrive at Awarradam after sailing for about 30 minutes. Accommodation The individual lodges have been built in traditional style with the veranda offering you a wonderful view of the river. Each lodge has hammocks on the veranda, 2 beds with mosquito nets, own toilet and shower with cold running water. Facilities The meals are served in a charming recreational room from which you have a fantastic view of the rapid. You can also relax in the atmospheric jungle bar-lounge or visit the ‘BööKamia’ Jungle Spa for a lovely relaxing massage, various body scrubs or a facial. Day 3 In the morning, you will leave by aeroplane for your adventure to Awarradam. After checking in and a delicious lunch, you will have the afternoon to spend at your leisure. Meals included for this day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Day 4 After breakfast, you will go on an educational ‘jungle walk’. While you enjoy yourself and are astounded by the unspoilt tropical rain forest, the guide will explain about the trees and plants and how you can recognize animals by the sounds they make and their tracks. After lunch you will visit the Peti rapid. You can swim, peddle in a korjaal and enjoy the magnificent view from a hammock. In the evening, you will be given further information about a few fascinating aspects of the local culture. Meals included for this day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Day 5 After breakfast, you will sail upstream. After half an hour, the engine of the korjaal will be switched off and you will float back with the current of the river, allowing you to enjoy the jungle noises and fauna to the full. If you are more adventurous, you could use the canoe and peddle back to the lodge at your own pace. In the afternoon, you will visit the local community where you can become further acquainted with the local culture. During the trip, you will experience what it is like on the river which is the lifeline of the local community. From the mooring place, you will go on a long walk past various villages and you will gain a good impression of everyday life in a Marron village. After dinner, you will be treated to an authentic cultural evening filled with song and dance. Under a tropical starry sky, you will be brought back by the boat crew to Awarradam. Destination Suriname

Vlakbij het gastenverblijf is een brede stroomversnelling met talloze watervallen. Iets verderop, om de bocht van Gran Rio, stort de Peli waterval zich kolkend naar beneden. Je kunt daar zwemmen, al peddelend de omgeving verkennen of

Tot op heden is Awarradam niet beschikbaar, de uitvoerder is sinds de COVID pandemie met deze tour gestopt, de accommodaties zijn in verval geraakt. Het is nog onduidelijk of en wanneer deze tour weer doorgaan gaat vinden. Wij hopen het van harte, het is een prachtige tour. 

Awarradam is de naam voor het kleine, idyllische vakantieoord op een eilandje, verscholen in het Amazone regenwoud, gelegen aan een fantastische stroomversnelling. Op een afstand van circa een half uur varen van de rand van het woongebied van de Saramaccaners, de grootste Marrongemeenschap in Suriname. Deze factoren maken Awarradam een vakantieoord bij uitstek, niet alleen voor natuurliefhebbers maar ook voor degenen die op een rustig tempo kennis willen maken met de cultuur van de Saramaccaners zoals zij in en met hun natuurlijk woongebied leven

Dagprogramma 4/5 daagse tour

Dag 1 Op dag 1 zult u vertrekken van af vliegveld Zorg en Hoop gelegen in Paramaribo. Vanaf hier vertrekt u per vliegtuig naar de airstrip Kajana. Vanaf daar vaart u met een korjaal over verschillende stroomversnellingen naar de eindbestemming, het vakantieoord Awarradam. In de middag zal er eerst een lunch zijn, waarna we met een korjaal de stroomversnelling ‘Peti’ gaan verkennen. Deze stroomversnelling is gelegen op enkele minuten van het oord. Hier kunt u gaan genieten van het heerlijke water, u kunt ook met zwemvesten terugdrijven naar het oord of peddelend met de kano terug gaan. De nachten in dit gebied zijn heerlijk koel waardoor er geen airco of ventilatie nodig is.

U wordt vroeg gewekt om vervolgens in de schemering een stukje de rivier af te drijven om in alle stilte te kunnen genieten van het ontwaken van het oerwoud. Na het ontbijt volgt een jungle hike, de gids vertelt uitgebreid over de omgeving. Na de lunch zult u een bezoek brengen aan de stroomversnellingen rondom het oord. Hier zult u de middag door brengen en kunt u heerlijk zwemmen, peddelen in een korjaal of hangmatteren.

Op de derde dag zult u kort na het ontbijt stroomopwaarts varen om vervolgens met de stroom mee de rivier af te drijven om te kunnen genieten van de junglegeluiden en de flora en fauna van het regenwoud. Na de lunch word er een bezoek gebracht aan de lokale gemeenschap. Hier maakt u kennis met de lokale bevolking en de cultuur van de lokale Saramaccaanse bevolking. Zo zult u zien hoe belangrijk de rivier is voor deze gemeenschap en hoe afhankelijk ze zijn van het voedsel dat de rivier hen geeft. Uiteindelijk zullen we aanmeren bij een van de dorpjes om vanaf daar een uitgebreide wandeling te maken langs verschillende dorpen. Onderweg zult u een kleine indruk krijgen over het leven van de mensen en zult u ze tegen komen in hun dagelijkse bezigheden.

Na het ontbijt zullen de medewerkers op een traditionele manier afscheid van u nemen en zult u met de korjaal terug keren naar Kajana. Vanaf hier vliegt u terug naar Paramaribo.

Dag 5 Na het ontbijt kunt u peddelen in een korjaal, zwemmen of gewoon in alle rust genieten van de geluiden van het oerwoud. Voor het vertrek nemen onze medewerkers op traditionele manier afscheid van u. Een korjaal brengt u terug naar Kajana. Daar vandaan vliegt u terug naar Paramaribo.

Goed om te weten

Wenst u naast de Saramaccaanse cultuur ook kennis te maken met de cultuur van de alleroudste bewoners van het Amazone Regenwoud? De inheemsen (indianen). Dan kunt u ook kiezen voor de combinatietour Palumeu & Awarradam waarbij u eerst deelneemt aan de 4-daagse tour naar Palumeu om achtereenvolgens door te vliegen naar Awarradam om aldaar deel te nemen aan de 5-daagse tour. (volgorde onder voorbehoud van wijzigingen)

Vierhonderdbij vijfenzestig meter loop je in een paar minuten, maar toch biedt dit eiland veel afwisseling. De huisjes en het restaurant vormen een enclave in een gemaaid gazon, bloeiende faya lobi en aangeharkte zandpaden. Verder is aan alle kanten ongerept regenwoud waarin je veel dieren kunt spotten.

Het eiland wordt omzoomd door talloze zandstranden en rotsformaties. De faciliteiten zijn als volgt: er is een lounge, een bar, een restaurant, een winkeltje met souvenirs, bewassing en koffie of thee bij het wakker worden. Verder traditionele massage en wellness.

Kaieteur Falls Guyana

De Kaieteur vallen in Essequibo (Guyana) in de Potaro rivier kent de werelds breedste single-drop waterval. De vallen bevinden zich in het amazonewoud, in een gebied dat tot natuurreservaat is uitgeroepen; Kaieteur National Park.

De grootste val is 226 meter hoog, gemeten van zijn val over de klif, tot zijn eerste contact. Hieronder volgt nog een serie kleinere vallen waar het water wild naar beneden dondert. Als je de totale hoogte van boven, tot onder waar de rivier zijn weg vervolgt rekent kom je op 251 meter. Hoewel er vallen zijn met een grotere hoogte, zijn er weinig die de combinatie van watervolume en hoogte kunnen evenaren. De grote val behoort tot een van de krachtigste ter wereld. De gemiddelde hoeveelheid water die per seconde passeert is een astronomische hoeveelheid van 663 kubieke meter, een verbluffende 663.000 liter! Fredberg en Zintete

Mogelijk als 3 - of 4 daagse back to basic tour, met overnachting in hangmat, in verschillende kampjes en wandelingen door het bos. Het spotten van dieren en genieten van de natuur staan hier centraal en de gidsen die deze tour begeleiden dragen heel graag hun kennis en hun passie over op de gasten. Overnachting op de Fredberg zelf, met geweldig uitzicht, schitterende sterrenhemel en zonsopgang aldaar. Een heel leuke tour met een avontuur factor en zo ecologisch verantwoord als mogelijk uitgevoerd.
