Australia to tour Pakistan for first time in 24 years
8 November 2021 8 November 2021 . From the section Cricket
Australia will tour Pakistan for the first time in 24 years in March and April 2022.
The tour will include three Test matches, three one-day internationals and one T20 international, taking place in Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore.
The announcement comes just days before the two countries meet in Dubai in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.
"I am delighted to welcome Australia to Pakistan," said Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja.
"From a personal point of view, it pleases me no end that we'll be engaged in a three-Test match series.
"Australia are one of the high-performing sides and them playing in our backyard for the first time after a gap of 24 years will be a special treat for the fans.
"Likewise, it will be a great opportunity for the Australia cricketers to not only play at our iconic venues but also feel and enjoy the respect, love and hospitality that this great country offers, something which most of their previous generation of cricketers missed out by playing offshore."
Australia last toured Pakistan in 1998, when current Australia head coach Justin Langer was part of the Test squad.
News of the 2022 tour comes just two months after New Zealand abandoned their tour of Pakistan following a government "security alert", before England withdrew their men's and women's teams from series in Pakistan that were due to take place in October.
"Cricket Australia is excited about the prospect of touring Pakistan next year for what will be a highly anticipated series in a country so incredibly passionate about the game and their national team," said Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley.
"Pakistan is a formidable opposition with an exceptionally talented team, as evidenced by their dynamic performances in the current ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the UAE.
"We thank the PCB for their considerable efforts in planning for the tour and look forward to continuing to work closely over the coming months to finalise the necessary operations, logistics, security and Covid-19 protocols.
"The safety and welfare of our players and staff remains our number one priority, and we will continue to work with the PCB and relevant agencies to ensure that appropriate and sufficient arrangements are put in place for the tour."

Australian cricket team to tour Pakistan for first time in 24 years in 2022
Cricket Australia will push ahead with the first tour of Pakistan in 24 years, with chief executive Nick Hockley insistent he wants the trip in March to go ahead.
Key points:
- Security concerns have meant many matches have been played in the United Arab Emirates
- But international cricket has returned in recent years since the bombing of Sri Lanka's team bus in 2009
- Australia's last match in Pakistan was in 1998
The Pakistan Cricket Board moved one step closer to hosting Australia's men's side, with the two boards agreeing to a tour schedule.
Australia are slated to play Tests in Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore in March, as well as three ODIs and a Twenty20 match.
Australia have not played in Pakistan since Mark Taylor hit an unbeaten 334 in Peshawar in 1998, with security concerns meaning all tours since have been played in the UAE.
International cricket returned to the country in recent years for the first time since the 2009 bombing of the Sri Lanka team bus, but New Zealand's withdrawal from a tour in September had clouded that.
At the time New Zealand Cricket claimed it had seen a "specific and credible threat against the team" on the morning of the first ODI.
England also withdrew from a subsequent tour, bringing into serious question Australia's trip to the country at the start of next year.
But Australia are adamant they want to tour, in the biggest step towards a return to the country since former chief executive Kevin Roberts' visit there in 2019.
"We will work over the next three months, we're going to be doing a [reconnaissance] over to Pakistan," Hockley told AAP.
"We will be working with all the relevant agencies to do our due diligence to make sure security programs are in place.
"As is the case with any tour, the tour remains subject to all of those plans being in place.
"But certainly, there is really strong intent to want to go. International touring has resumed there.
"But as we always do, we will put the safety and wellbeing of players and staff as number one priority."
The matches will also mark Australia's first Tests overseas since the Ashes in 2019, with tours of South Africa and Bangladesh postponed due to COVID-19.
The news comes ahead of Australia's semi-final clash with Pakistan in the Twenty20 World Cup, in the biggest game between the two teams in more than a decade.
Hockley and new interim CA chairman Richard Freudenstein will travel to Dubai on Tuesday night for high-powered ICC meetings to finish the tournament.
The tour of Pakistan will no doubt be front and centre in some talks, with former PCB chief executive Wasim Khan critical of Australia's decision not to play ODIs there in 2019.
Australia would also be expected to speak to New Zealand officials about their withdrawal.
"We are in regular contact with all the other member countries," Hockley said.
"We're all working to make sure international cricket can continue and can thrive. We'll work over the next three months.
"The work over the next three months is to satisfy ourselves to make sure all the plans are in place to make sure everyone is safe."

Pakistan unveil squad for Australia tour
IMF board expected to approve $1.1b disbursement for Pakistan by end of April
Hafiz naeemur rehman replaces siraj as jip ameer, pm shehbaz says govt will investigate ‘suspicious letters’ issue.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Selector Wahab Riaz announced on Monday an 18-member Pakistan Test squad for the tour to Australia.
Shan Masood will be leading the side in his first assignment as Test captain. He was named Pakistan’s captain for the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle after taking over the reins from Babar Azam last week.
Left-handed opening batter Saim Ayub has earned his maiden call-up to the Test team after an impressive run in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24. The 22-year-old scored 553 runs in four matches for Karachi Whites and had three centuries to his name, including a match-winning double century against Faisalabad in the final of the tournament.
He continued his form in the Pakistan Cup (one-day tournament), where he was named the best batter of the tournament, ending as the competition’s highest run-getter.
Right-arm fast bowler Khurram Shahzad has also been awarded his maiden Test call-up, on the back of a successful domestic season thus far. The 23-year-old was the highest wicket-taker of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24 with 36 wickets in eight matches at an average of 20.31 and picked up 13 wickets at 16.62 in the recently concluded Pakistan Cup.
Pace bowling all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who last appeared in Tests for Pakistan during England’s tour of Pakistan in late 2022 has returned to the squad.
Left-arm pacer Mir Hamza, who registered 32 wickets at 20.88 in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24, and right-arm pacer Mohammad Wasim Jnr are making a return to the squad as well. The two fast bowlers were part of Pakistan’s squad during New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan that took place from December 2022 to January 2023.

Pakistan squad for Australia Tests: Shan Masood (captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel and Shaheen Shah Afridi
“The squad has been assembled keeping in mind the challenging Australian conditions. We have kept the pitches in mind and added more pace bowling resources to the team to ensure that the management can be flexible with the team combinations in all three Test matches.
“Saim Ayub has been added to the squad after the extraordinary domestic season he has had this year. He has impressed with the bat during the Quaid-e-Azam trophy and Pakistan Cup, pushing the case for his selection. His inclusion will strengthen our solid batting line-up,” said Wahab Riaz.
The squad will assemble in Rawalpindi on 22 November for a training camp ahead of the tour. The camp is scheduled to run from 23 to 28 November at Pindi Cricket Stadium. The team will fly out on 30 November from Lahore. Some additional players have also been invited to feature in the training camp. The players called for the camp are Arshad Iqbal, Kashif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usama Mir and Usman Qadir.

Pakistan to tour Australia for white-ball series in November
LAHORE - Pakistan cricket team is set to visit Australia for a white-ball series scheduled for November this year.
According to a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official, the tour, which will mark the start for Australia’s white-ball schedule for the summer of 2024-25, will comprise six games in total – three ODIs and as many T20Is – to be played across six venues from November 4 to 18, 2024.
Pakistan will be returning to Australia after a gap of nearly 11 months, after having competed in the Benaud-Qadir Trophy, which comprised three Test matches played across Perth, Sydney and Melbourne in December 2023-January 2024.
The three-match Dettol Men’s ODI series will begin on November 4 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Pakistan and Australia will then play in Adelaide and Perth on November 8 and 10, respectively. Pakistan last played an ODI series on Australian soil back in 2016, which saw the home-side come out on top.
Pakistan, Japan sign deals for two projects in Sindh
Subsequently, Pakistan and Australia will face one another in the three-match Dettol Men’s T20I Series. Pakistan’s last T20I outing on Australian soil was back in 2022, wherein the men in green appeared in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The series will start at The Gabba in Brisbane. The action will then move to the Sydney Cricket Ground; Pakistan’s last T20I at the venue saw them beat New Zealand at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semifinal. Hobart will be the last stop on the tour, where the final T20I will be played on November 18.
