The Norfolk Botanical Garden is a beautiful outdoor nature retreat just minutes from downtown, next to the airport. This a wonderful place to visit to enjoy a walk in the forest, admire colorful gardens, or bring the kids on a hot summer day to frolic in the splash pad. The more than 60 theme gardens, on 175 acres, feature a wide range of plants that provide a unique experience throughout the year.

The garden was started in the late 1930s and began with the planting of thousands of azaleas and rhododendrons, as well as other trees and shrubs. Although it expanded over the years, what visitors see today is a mature garden, carefully tended to by staff and a large number of volunteers.

This unique property is surrounded by water on three sides, with canals running through the interior. Consequently, boat tours, as well as tram tours, are offered during the spring and summer and provide a leisurely option for exploring the grounds.

Seasonal events are held throughout the year and are very popular, particularly the annual Dominion Garden of Lights , beginning in late November and running until the New Year. This free museum has one of the country's leading glass collections. Even visitors who are not interested in art cannot help but be impressed by the beauty and creativity found in this collection.

The museum features European and American painting and sculpture, modern art, contemporary art, photography, decorative arts, and ancient art. Conveniently located on the waterfront in downtown Norfolk is the decommissioned WWII Battleship, USS Wisconsin , operated by Nauticus. While the ship is impressive on many fronts, it is one of the largest battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy, and it is an imposing presence on the Norfolk waterfront. Launched in December of 1943, it was also one of the last battleships ever built by the U.S Navy. Wisconsin was active in WWII, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and also served as a training ship in between active duty.

Visitors first walk through the Nauticus building, with an extensive and well-thought-out series of displays related to the history and layout of the ship, before walking out onto the deck. Once on the ship, it's possible to walk from one end to the other, climb stairs to some of the upper levels, and explore large sections of the Wisconsin on a self-guided tour. Recent changes have allowed previously closed areas to now be open to the public unescorted. Some of these new spaces include, but are not limited to, the CPO Lounge, Ship's Library, Galley, and even the Brig.

Guided tours are also available. One of the best is the Top of the World tour, which takes visitors to the exterior command center. This perch in the sky provides expansive views out over the ship and Norfolk. The From Foc'sle to Fantail provides an in-depth look at everything on the main deck from bow to stern.

Another important tourist attraction in Norfolk, the MacArthur Memorial honors Douglas MacArthur, a US general and Chief of Staff of the United States Army, as well as Americans who served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Occupation of Japan and the Korean War.

The Memorial is housed in a grand old courthouse building, but the complex consists of both the memorial building and a large visitors center located next door. Visitors enter through this building, with a gift shop and several displays, including MacArthur's staff car, and then walk through a courtyard to the courthouse building.

The memorial building contains the tombs of General and Mrs. MacArthur , in the center of the building directly below the huge dome. Galleries on the main and upper level are laid out by year and chronical MacArthur's life and events of the time period.

With all the big name animals, the Virginia Zoo is a definite favorite with locals and tourists. Elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, rhinos, orangutans, kangaroos, and all kinds of other wildlife can be found here in well-spaced, large enclosures.

Some of the animals can be viewed from elevated boardwalks that allow for a bird's-eye view or an almost face-to-face encounter with a giraffe. On the downtown waterfront at Nauticus, the Victory Rover Naval Base Cruises are a great way to explore the area by sea. These narrated tours cruise past the Battleship Wisconsin, downtown Norfolk, shipyards, the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, the Portsmouth Coast Guard Station, and the Norfolk Naval Station, and numerous other sights along the way. The Norfolk Naval Station is the largest of its kind in the world, and this is a rare opportunity to see this type of site.

The 150-passenger boat has an open-air upper level and a closed cabin with air conditioning. Food is available for sale at the snack bar. Cruises operate regularly from March to November, with limited sailings in December.

Docked in downtown Norfolk, not far from Nauticus, is the tall ship, American Rover. This three-masted schooner offers sailing cruises on the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor, with fantastic views of the city and surroundings. These narrated cruises last an hour and a half to two hours and run from April to October.

Guests can help with the sailing if they want a little hands-on experience, or simply enjoy the ride. Snacks and beverages are sold on the ship, but guests are also welcome to bring their own food on with them if they choose.

Cruises can be booked 30 days in advance, but it is often possible to get tickets at the last minute. Afternoon and sunset cruises are available, and occasionally special sailings are scheduled, including night cruises.

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is in the Nauticus building, although operated separately, and can be visited as you walk through the main building to board the Battleship Wisconsin. This is a free museum and well worth a stop. The focus of the museum is on the history of the U.S. Navy in Virginia and the local area, from the Civil War through to the Cold War.

The museum is small, but displays are well done, with model ships, uniforms and other apparel, an example of a mine used against German U-boats, and all kinds of historical information.

For an escape from the city, the Hermitage Museum offers a nice retreat, with open green spaces, cool areas for strolling along the waterfront, a rambling house to explore, and unique art displays to admire. This 1895 Arts-and-Crafts-style waterfront house was built by William and Florence Sloane as a summer residence. The house eventually became the Sloane's main residence and underwent some additions over the years. The house now has 42 rooms and has remained relatively unchanged since 1936. Today, the museum showcases not only the old furnishings but works of art, both indoors and out.

On Thursday evenings throughout the summer, the museum hosts a concert series known as Sunsets on the River . Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and set up on the grass beside the river to listen to bands. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

The Children's Museum of Virginia is one of the best things to do as a family when visiting Norfolk. Inside you'll find interactive displays, including a bubble-blowing station, a musical store, a bank, and a grocery store right through to a miniature port. In addition to these displays, kids will also find hours of entertainment in the full-sized tugboat, city bus, and fire truck cab.

One of the museum's main attractions is the incredible train exhibit. On display are eight main trainlines and over 800 trains all beautifully laid out in a miniature setting showcasing the cities of Portsmouth, Roanoke, Richmond, and the area surrounding the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The museum makes learning about the stars and space fun in the newly upgraded Beazley Planetarium. It now boasts of 4K video quality and incredible sound with a new Dolby 7.1 audio system.

Although the museum is technically not in Norfolk, it's a short drive over one of the bridges leaving Norfolk.

Norfolk is a city in the southeastern part of the state of Virginia , and though it may sound unassuming it is actually home to a whole host of power players such as the largest naval base in the entire world.

It also has one of the most important art museums in this part of the United States, at the Chrysler Museum of Art which currently houses over 30,000 items.

As if that wasn’t enough, Norfolk doesn’t scrimp when it comes to nature, and if you like flora and fauna then you can visit stunning locations such as the Norfolk Botanical Garden or the Virginian Zoo that is also housed here.

As Norfolk is on the water, you can also head down to the Nauticus National Maritime Center or Harbor Park, or you can even take a cruise here to see the city from another vantage point.

1. Chrysler Museum of Art

Nestled in the Ghent district, known for being for the most artistic area of the city, is the Chrysler Museum of Art. This museum is famous for being one of the most important museums in the whole of the Southeastern United States, so with that in mind make sure you don’t miss a trip here if you are an art lover.

The museum dates back to the 1930s, and is based on the art collection of Walter Chrysler, of automobile fame. Here you will find over 30,000 items in the museum’s collections that will take you back thousands of years. Expect sculpture, paintings, glasswork, photography, and decorative arts.

2. The USS Wisconsin

The USS Wisconsin is famous for being a mighty battleship that was in operation during the Second World War as well as the Korean War.

The ship was actually retired on the 1980s, only to be called up for service again in Operation Desert Storm in the 1990s.

After such an illustrious history, the ship is now a nautical museum and you can take a self-guided tour here where you can visit different parts of the ship including offices, an onboard chapel, a mess, and the staterooms of the officers.

If you prefer there is also a guided tour that you can follow where the full history of the ship will be explained to you and you can also see other parts of the USS Wisconsin including the captain’s cabin.

3. The Moses Myers House

The former home of the Moses Myers, a famous American entrepreneur who was instrumental in the growth of Norfolk, the Moses Myers House gives visitors a look into how people would have lived in this part of the United States at the turn of the century.

The Moses Myers House has been lovingly restored over the years and is known for being one of the first brick buildings to have ever been built in Norfolk.

Many of the original furnishings are still in place here and there is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the story and history of Moses Myers.

4. Norfolk Botanical Garden

The Norfolk Botanical Garden stretches over 150 acres and is divided into different sections that include over forty gardens, each with a distinct theme.

The flowers and plants here are seasonal meaning that the gardens bloom all year round and there is even a special garden dedicated to younger visitors. As well as a special space for youngsters, all visitors here can also enjoy themes such as a serene and relaxing Japanese garden, complete with traditional Japanese ponds, as well as a Hummingbird Garden that features all of the favorite plants of these dainty birds.

The flora and fauna here is definitely not limited to the United States, and you can even find a Tropical Display Garden that mimics a rainforest environment.

5. Hunter House Victorian Museum

Dating from 1894, the Hunter House Victorian Museum is the former home of the Hunter family and is the perfect place to come if you want to find out how a Victorian family would have lived in Norfolk.

The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors can come here to see the period furnishings and antique memorabilia on show that are much as they would have been in the days of old.

6. The Virginia Zoo

Nestled next to picturesque Lafayette Park, there are over 500 animals housed at the Virginia Zoo, from elephants to rare species of frogs.

Not limited to indigenous species, you will find animals from all over the world here including Africa, Australia, and Asia.

The zoo is divided up into specific exhibits to showcase the different species, such the Trail of the Tiger which has tigers from Malaysia.

As well as the animals on show here the zoo is also famed for its gardens and flora on offer and you can even visit the zoo at night to get a glimpse of the many nocturnal animals that are housed here.

7. Nauticus National Maritime Center

The Nauticus National Maritime Center was founded in the 1980s and first opened its doors in 1994.

This center is dedicated to all things nautical related and to that end you can expect a range of interactive exhibits where visitors can get hands-on, as well as several interactive and large screen theaters.

Part of the center is the Hampton Roads Naval Museum which is known for giving visitors the chance to get up close with the exhibits, including a shark lab and a horseshoe crab touch tank.

There is also a marina and a cruise ship pier here as part of the center.

8. Naval Station Norfolk

Naval Station Norfolk is known as the largest station in the world, which is definitely something of a claim to fame.

The base spreads for over six kilometers over the waterfront of Norfolk and 134 aircraft are housed here as well as an impressive 75 naval vessels.

This is very much a working naval base and is actually home to the largest number of navy personnel in the United States, but despite this visitors can still tour the base with a member of naval staff who will explain the history and work of the navy, as well as offering a tour of some of the ships and aircraft carriers that are kept here.

9. General Douglas MacArthur Memorial

Dedicated to Douglas MacArthur, this memorial is actually a museum that has an education center attached as well as a research center and a theater.

The memorial here aims to tell the story of General MacArthur who fought in the First and Second World Wars as well as the Korean War.

At the museum visitors will have the chance to see wartime memorabilia in the form of paintings, period artifacts, and antique vehicles.

10. Wells Theater

13. Harbor Park

Sprawling across 36 acres is Harbor Park in Norfolk, which is a large area of parkland that even has its own baseball stadium located on it.

The stadium opened in the 1990s and is known for being the home ground of the Norfolk Tides, a minor league baseball team that have their practice sessions here.

The stadium can accommodate over 12,000 spectators at one time and there is also a restaurant located on site.

Built in 1919, Attucks Theatre is names after Crispus Attucks, the first patriot to die in the Revolutionary War.

You’ll enter on 70-foot gangplank over the water to a covered deck. Once you enter into the “Wonder Hall” with skylights, you’ll take the sloped people mover through bulkheads to view the exhibits. Everything is in an open, 50,000 square foot loft space. It even provides balcony views of the harbor below.

Best of all, there’s no admission fee to see it all, making it one of the best free things to do in Norfolk. Expect to spend at least one to two hours here, as there’s a lot to see. You might even want to take some time just to explore the harbor outside!

Hermitage Museum & Gardens

The Hermitage Visual Arts School offers classes during the summer that are perfect for beginners to art! Through Ceramics classes, you can learn to use a pottery wheel and make mugs. You can even make your own creations in an intermediate class!

In the Handmade Papermaking and Pulp Painting course, you can learn to make your own paper from upcycled materials! Make greeting cards or a work of art to frame. In Hands-on Garden Workshops, you can learn to plant small trees, shrubs, and even perennials!

American Rover

From a distance, you’ll be able to tour one of the world’s busiest seaports. Get those cameras ready to see the Atlantic Fleet made up of destroyers, guided missile cruisers, submarines, aircraft carries, and more!

You’ll also enjoy comfortable seating, a climate-controlled enclosed deck complete with air conditioning, an open-air shaded upper deck, a snack bar, and a souvenier shop as well!

General Douglas MacArthur Memorial

During its tenure, the battleship played a role in World War II, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm and received five battle stars for its time in World War II and one for its role in the Korean War. The USS Wisconsin was ultimately berthed at Nauticus on December 7, 2000.

Today, taking a tour of the ship is one of the top Norfolk attractions. A self-guided tour will take you through the Nauticus building, where displays and exhibits will give you a history lesson about the battleship and its intricate layout. You’ll then have the chance to explore the massive deck and the numerous areas that are open to the public.

7. Escape the City at the Norfolk Botanical Garden

Tucked away just north of downtown, the Norfolk Botanical Garden is the perfect place to get away from it all. This is Virginia’s largest botanical garden, so be prepared to be impressed!

These beautiful gardens are set on 175 acres of impeccably manicured land. Take a look around, and you’ll find 14 miles of paved and unpaved paths, as well as 60 themed gardens – from azaleas and rhododendrons to roses and camellias. There’s also a children’s garden, a butterfly house, a canal walk garden, and so much more.

Norfolk Botanical Garden is much more than peaceful and beautiful gardens, though. From art classes to walk-and-talks and plant sales, there are always fun events going on. 

Plus, if you’re in town in December, you won’t want to miss out on the popular Dominion Garden of Lights. All month long, the gardens are decked out in over 1 million twinkling lights! It’s a sight to behold and a must on any Norfolk bucket list.

8. Peruse the Chrysler Museum of Art

Even if you don’t consider yourself an art enthusiast, you have to visit the Chrysler Museum of Art during your trip to Norfolk! Peruse the museum, and you’ll find over 30,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of history.  

The impressive permanent collection boasts works from world-famous artists, including Pollock, Rothko, Warhol, and Lichtenstein. Plus, you’ll find everything from ancient artifacts to contemporary masterpieces. If that’s not enough, you can check out over 4,000 photographs ranging from the Civil War era to the modern day. 

Delve deeper, and you’ll have the chance to check out one of the largest glass collections in the world. Be sure to stop off at the Perry Glass Studio next door for its free public demonstrations (Wednesday through Sunday at noon). 9. Drink & Dine in the Norfolk Waterside District

Perched right on the Elizabeth River, the revitalized Waterside District is easily one of the coolest areas of town. This is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a family-friendly restaurant or a place to grab dinner and drinks with friends. 

If you’re looking for nightlife venues, head over to The Market Norfolk , where you can take your pick of the food hall’s carefully curated selection of bars and restaurants. For local brews, Starr Hill Market Bar just so happens to be one of Virginia’s oldest craft breweries. Or, for something a bit more family-friendly, grab dinner at Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse or Cogans Pizza before indulging with freshly-made fudge at The Fudgery. 

Plus, if you’re looking for entertainment, there are always fun events and pop-ups happening in Norfolk’s Waterside District. Think yoga with baby goats, live musical performances, and fun festivals!

10. Attend a Festival at Town Point Park

Set right on the Elizabeth River in downtown Norfolk, it’s no wonder why Town Point Park is the site of most of Norfolk’s vibrant festivals. 

If you’re in town in the spring, you can sample 150 different types of brews at the buzzing Virginia Beer Festival. Or, if you prefer wine, the Virginia Wine Festival is held in Town Point Park in May each year!

Benchtop Brewing Company is one of the best of the bunch and prides itself on using scientific innovation, new brewing techniques, and locally sourced ingredients to create truly unique craft beers. Norfolk won’t win any prizes for being easy to get to. There’s no motorway, train stations are few and far between, and it’s not really on the road to anywhere – but that’s all part of this big-skies county’s charm. A land of open countryside flecked with rickety windmills, gorgeous flint-clad villages and no shortage of cosy fire-warmed pubs , it’s also one of great natural beauty, with wind-thrashed beaches and epic wildlife-watching.

A watery labyrinth of shallow lakes, reed-fringed rivers and peaceful creeks criss-crossing a landscape studded with postcard-like villages, the Norfolk Broads has more miles of waterway than Venice – and it’s the perfect place to go off-grid and slip into a slower pace of life. This patch of the county first found fame as a Victorian holiday destination, and it’s still proper Swallows and Amazons territory, meaning by far the best way to explore is by boat. Moor up at picturesque hamlets – the prettiest are along the Bure and Ant rivers – drift along on a paddleboard (Fritton Lake’s silky water is the best spot) and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife: these lush marshes are home to a myriad of scarcely sighted bird species, plus the staggeringly beautiful swallowtail butterfly, the largest and rarest in the UK .

Norwich Cathedral, Norwich

Dominating the skyline of Norfolk’s only city, history-steeped Norwich Cathedral has stood in situ for more than 900 years – and it’s one of the most splendiferous examples of Romanesque architecture anywhere in the UK. Come early in the morning to marvel at the ethereal light peeking through the stained glass; poke around the double-height, Hogwarts-esque cloisters, and make sure to look up: the ceilings here have more than 1,000 painted wood carvings, while a pair of peregrine falcons, who make their home in the spire during the summer months, swoop overhead. With its maze of winding cobbled lanes, immaculate gardens and Dutch-gabled mews houses, the gorgeous cathedral close feels like its own little village within the city – and has provided the backdrop for many a period drama.

Happisburgh, near Norwich

It’s the storybook red and white candy-striped lighthouse that lures most visitors to Happisburgh, a gorgeous seaside village on Norfolk’s more overlooked east coast. On occasional Sundays, the lighthouse normally flings open its doors, inviting visitors to clamber up the dizzying spiral staircase to reach the top – and in a flat-as-a-pancake county like this one, there are few better places to snatch cinematic views of the blustery coastline. While you’re here, stop off at St Mary’s, the village’s perfectly preserved 15th-century church, before snaking down the path leading to the secluded beach. It’s a wonderful place for windy walks , but keep well clear of the cliff edges: erosion has been steadily swallowing up this stretch of coastline and the wooden defences positioned along the sand serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of this beautiful landscape.

Gunton Park, near Cromer

To see rural Norfolk at its bucolic best, head to Gunton Park estate, a few miles inland from the seaside town of Cromer. This historic, 1,000-acre deer park – painstakingly restored and repopulated by two local landowners with the help of rock’n’roll art dealer Ivor Braka – is a preposterously pretty walking spot all year round, but visit in winter and you’ll find the land perpetually shrouded in a hypnotic frosty mist. The herds of free-roaming fallow deer munching on pristine grass aren’t the estate’s only delight: head to the edge of the park to find Braka’s pebbledash pub, the Gunton Arms , home to one of the greatest collections of modern art outside the Tate . It’s well worth calling ahead and booking a table in the restaurant – gutsy British menus of Cromer crab, venison sausage rolls and thick-cut steaks are as locavore as the come.

This picturesque Norfolk village has a long history as a site of Christian pilgrimage. It was once up there on the same pedestal as Jerusalem or Rome , and kings and queens regularly stopped by to visit its shrines, holy wells and priory – the majestic remains of which still take centre stage. But you don’t need to be pious to appreciate Walsingham’s beauty: in early spring , the woodlands around here transform into a carpet of dazzling white snowdrops, and they’re well worth a visit alone. Aside from its religious significance, much of Walsingham’s charm lies in its stunning architecture: half-timbered jettied cottages; Georgian façades; thatched-roofed pubs and strings of wonky medieval houses, all anchored around a dinky village green. The River Stiffkey winds its way around the edges – bring your bicycle and spend a peaceful afternoon meandering on the trails along its banks.

Wells-next-the-Sea

With its string of colourful clapboard beach huts, sweep of pine-fringed sand and proper bucket-and-spade seaside ambience, Wells-next-the-Sea tops our list as one of the most scenic beaches in Norfolk. It’s a haven for twitchers – marsh harriers, pied avocets and pink-footed geese often swoop over the surrounding wetlands – and there’s always a chance of spotting a colony of flat seals sprawled on the sandbanks. Once you’re beached out, hop on the miniature train shuffling day-trippers between the coast and town, and head to Wells’s picturesque harbour – deeply rooted in maritime history, it’s still packed with local fishermen hauling in their day’s catch. Don’t leave without having a snoop around the smart independent shops before making a greasy-fingered pit stop dunking into a huge portion of battered cod at French’s Fish Shop.

Awash with flint-clad fishermen’s cottages, old-world pubs, hollyhock-filled lanes and gaggles of children crabbing along the quay, the coastal village of Blakeney has oodles of charm. It was once a busy commercial port, but silting reduced it to a series of narrow tidal creeks, leaving in its wake a mesmerising landscape of mud flats, salt marshes and spits of shingle and sand dune. But the real reason to visit is the seals. It's home to England ’s largest breeding grey seal colony and more than 3,000 wide-eyed fluffy pups are born on the National Trust -owned Blakeney Point each year. Join one of the many boat trips departing from the quay or try to persuade a friendly fisherman to whizz you out. If you can, time your visit with the winter birthing season – it’s one of Norfolk’s best-loved wildlife wonders.

Thompson Common, near Thetford

For all the noise of Norfolk’s north coast, it’s the unsung south that’s home to some of the county’s most soul-stirring scenery. Right in the heart of the Brecks, Thompson Common feels like a forgotten world: a swathe of eerily beautiful, primeval-looking forest speckled with prehistoric ponds left over from the Ice Age which act as a magnet for flora and wildlife. Follow the gentle eight-mile Great Eastern Pingo Trail to reach Thompson Water, a vast, man-made lake swarming with rare breeds of dragonfly, birds and rafts of otters floating in their undisturbed natural habitat – on a good day, you’re unlikely to pass another soul. Once you’ve hung up your walking boots , stay overnight at smart farmhouse B&B College Farm , whose grounds back directly onto the route.

Blickling Hall and Estate, near Aylsham

There’s no shortage of stately homes in Norfolk – but for true fantasy romance, head to Blickling Hall . Dripping in history, this Jacobean beauty was once owned by the Boleyn family (Anne’s headless ghost is rumoured to haunt the estate) and lavish rooms house one of the most important collections of historic manuscripts under the National Trust’s care. But it’s the estate’s extensive grounds that are the real star. Little changed over the centuries, they parcel up all the best bits of quintessential Norfolk countryside. Weave your way through pristine parkland and avenues of ancient yew trees; amble around immaculate ornamental gardens and romp through the bluebell -filled woods before stopping to take it all in from the banks of the glossy lake. To do it justice, you’ll need a couple of days to explore, so stay overnight in one of the cottages on the estate: the Rapunzel-style Tower is extra special.

Holkham Hall and Estate, near Well-next-the-Sea

Ringed by rolling parkland and ancient pine woods, 25,000-acre Holkham Estate – which is still privately owned by the Earl of Leicester – is a real stunner. Its 18th-century stately hall is one of the country’s finest examples of Palladian architecture. You could easily spend an entire day here, exploring rooms lined with priceless artworks by Van Dyck and Rubens; boating around the silvery lake; cycling through pretty deer-filled meadows and nosing around the mini vineyard and sizeable vegetable gardens which supply the kitchens at The Victoria Inn , the estate’s very own boutique hotel. And it’s just a stone’s throw from wild, unspoilt Holkham Beach – fringed by tussocky dunes, this protected nature reserve was the very spot where Gwyneth Paltrow mooched around the sand in the famous closing scenes of Shakespeare in Love .

Tour A WWII Battleship

Some of the most rewarding places to visit in Norfolk are rooted in the county’s beguiling past. Explore the region’s prehistory at Grime’s Graves, the Anglo-Saxon name for what is in fact a Neolithic flint mine; step inside a Jacobean household at Blickling Hall, home to Anne Boleyn, and get hands-on with armoured military vehicles at the Norfolk Tank Museum.

Meanwhile, Norfolk’s Roman history is remembered at forts such as Burgh Castle, and that of its most famous British rebel Boudicca is traced at the Iceni civitas of Venta Icenorum.

Here are 10 of Norfolk’s best historic sites.

1. Castle Acre Priory

Castle Acre Priory in Norfolk was an 11th-century monastery founded by William de Warenne, the Second Earl of Surrey. Like many of the country’s monasteries it was dissolved under Henry VIII , however its picturesque ruins today provide a glimpse into the thriving world of monastic Britain.

There are several exhibitions at Castle Acre Priory, including a recreation of the monks’ herb garden and displays of original artefacts. Audio guides are available, making the site easy to navigate and understand, with visits usually lasting a few hours.

2. Grime’s Graves

Located in Norfolk, England, Grime’s Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. First named ‘Grim’s Graves’ by the Anglo-Saxons , it was not until the site was excavated in 1870 that they were identified as flint mines which were dug more than 5,000 years ago.

Today, a small exhibition illustrates the history of the fascinating site. Visitors can descend 9 meters by ladder into an excavated shaft to see the jet-black flint. The landscape is also worth wandering around, since it has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a habitat for rare plants and fauna.

3. Norwich Cathedral

At the centre or Norfolk’s county town, Norwich Cathedral was built between 1096 and 1145 on the site of an Anglo-Saxon village and two smaller churches. The cathedral’s carved and painted bosses are significant medieval sculptures, while its cloisters and cathedral spire are both the second largest of their kind in England after Salisbury Cathedral .

Inside Norwich Cathedral, there is a 14th-century painting known as the Despenser Retable, as well as a copper baptismal font made from bowls previously used for making chocolate in the Norwich Rowntree’s factory.

4. Blickling Hall

Blickling Hall is a stately home of historic importance in Norfolk, England. Blickling’s most famous resident was Anne Boleyn , second wife of Henry VIII and Queen of England between 1533 and 1536.

The grand entrance hall and staircase are in the original Jacobean style, while the 1930s style Brown Drawing Room recalls its late ownership by the Kerr family. The Chinese Bedroom also has some of the best surviving examples of original Chinese wallpaper in the UK today.

5. Hoveton Hall Estate

Hoveton Hall Estate is a Regency-style house and grounds in Norfolk, England, covering 620 acres, which includes highly acclaimed gardens. The house in its current form was built between 1809 and 1812.

Christabell Burroughes commissioned architect Humphrey Repton and his son to design the current version of Hoveton Hall, perhaps partly based on elements of Sheringham Hall, another building designed by Repton in Norfolk.

The gardens are perhaps the most famous feature of Hoveton Hall today. As well as the walled ‘Spider Garden’, the grounds hold a walled kitchen garden (which is still used to grow fruit), an early 19th-century glasshouse, a magnolia garden stretching alongside a lake and a woodland walk.

6. Norfolk Tank Museum

Offering a ‘hands-on’ experience, the Norfolk Tank Museum allows visitors to enter and explore armoured military vehicles from throughout history. The independent museum features various Centurion tanks and a diverse collection of military small arms.

The museum aims to allow visitors to handle and touch as many of the exhibits and artefacts as possible. Visitors to the Norfolk Tank Museum can enter and explore a Saladin Armoured Scout Car and a Chieftain Main Battle Tank, for example.

7. Burgh Castle Roman Fort

The Roman Fort at Burgh Castle is one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Britain. The walls of this impressive fortification remain in remarkably good condition: they survive on three sides and stretch as high as four metres.

Burgh Castle Roman Fort, known as Gariannonum, was originally built in 260-280 AD as part of the so-called ‘Saxon Shore’ defences, designed to protect against seaborne raiders from Denmark and Germany. These bases defended trading centres and local settlements, with other forts in the area located at Brancaster and Caister-on-Sea.

8. Venta Icenorum

Venta Icenorum, or ‘market-place of the Iceni’, is in the valley of the River Tas and the Romano-British predecessor of the modern town of Caistor St Edmund, south of Norwich. It was the largest Roman town in East Anglia.

It was the civitas, or capital city of the Iceni tribe led by Boudicca . The town came into being around 60-61 AD after the tribe’s revolt against Roman rule and the sacking of Colchester (Camulodunum) and London (Londinium) although there are suggestions it grew from an earlier Iron Age settlement.

9. Castle Rising

Castle Rising is a ruined Norman fortification in Norfolk which was once home to Queen Isabella, widow of Edward II and mother of Edward III. In the 16th century the Castle passed to the Howard family, with Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk taking ownership. Howard was infamously the uncle of both Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard , two Queens of England executed by Henry VIII.

Though ownership of Castle Rising remains with the Howard family, today it is periodically open to the public in partnership with English Heritage. Surrounded by twenty acres of expansive earthworks, Castle Rising represents the ultimate medieval defense system.

10. Lynn Museum

The Lynn Museum in the northerly Norfolk town of King’s Lynn covers the town’s local history but also the Bronze Age timber circle Seahenge. Lynn Museum is home to a replica of Seahenge’s timbers, which were discovered on the nearby coast in 1998, as well as information on how they were excavated. The Seahenge display was on loan to the British Museum between February and July of 2022.

The museum also features a display on the development of fairground rides and the history of Norfolk: its collection includes an Iceni gold coin hoard, lead badges and oil paintings by local artists.

Many in Hampton Roads don’t care that the area won’t be in the “path of totality” for Monday’s solar eclipse — when the moon passes between the Earth and sun and creates daytime darkness. It will begin at 2:02 p.m. and daylight locally will dim 60-80% reaching a peak semi-darkness at 3:20 p.m., according to Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. It will last until about 4 p.m.

Where to buy solar eclipse glasses near me? Some locations may still have glasses for last-minute eclipse watchers

Today's the day when the moon's shadow will (partially) blot out the sun for millions of Floridians, and some of them may still be scrambling for eclipse glasses so they can safely look at it without frying their eyes. Where can you still find them?

You may have to call around, or do some driving. Many retail locations have been selling solar eclipse glasses this year and some places have been giving them away, but availability is "while supplies last" and that will be different for every place.

Where can I find eclipse glasses?

Here are some places to check. Remember, some may have sold out, and not all locations may have been carrying them. Make sure any eclipse glasses you buy are legitimate and include an ISO rating, an ISO number and an address, avoid any that say "NASA Approved," and test them before you look up .

7-Eleven, Buc-ee's, Circle K and more

You may not have to go farther than the end of your street. Many convenience stores and gas stations have been carrying eclipse glasses and may still have some in stock.

Eclipse glasses have been spotted at 7-Eleven , Circle K, and Buc-ee's locations and many individual stores may have jumped on the opportunity.

Walmart has offered a wide variety of eclipse glasses in different styles, so has Target . However, all of the glasses on their websites are shipping only which will be a little late, so check your local store for availability.

Warby Parker, Sonic offering free eclipse glasses

Prescription eyeglasses retailer Warby Parker began handing out free eclipse glasses at their locations on April 1 so definitely call first.

Sonic Drive-in locations are offering free eclipse glasses with the purchase of their new Blackout Sonic Float.

Does Amazon offer same-day delivery of eclipse glasses?

Online stores are great for fast service, but you may want to give it a miss this time. The   American Astronomical Society (AAS) does not recommend buying eclipse glasses online due to the number of counterfeit, unsafe glasses that have hit the market this year.

Do I need to wear solar eclipse glasses?

If you plan to look directly at the sun, yes. Even a brief glance may cause temporary or permanent damage to your eyes and eyesight.

"Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer," NASA advises . "The concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury."

How can I tell if my eclipse glasses are legitimate?

If you didn't buy your eclipse glasses directly from one of the vetted venders on the AAS list or a trusted source, check the text on the glasses for the  ISO 12312-2 standard listing and the address of the company. But these can be copied.

Don't trust any glasses that say they are NASA Approved . NASA doesn't do that.

Test your glasses first by putting them on inside and looking at a strong light source. You shouldn't be able to see anything, according to the AAS, although very bright lights may show up but would be very faint.

Go outside, put them on, and look at sunlight reflections or glance at the sun very quickly. You shouldn't see anything around you and the sun should appear to be a "sharp-edged, round disk" that's comfortably bright.

Can I watch the eclipse without looking at it?

Yes! If you don't manage to get glasses in time, there are several ways to see the eclipse that won't risk your eyes with items you probably have around the home.

Anything with a round hole in it can be held up to cast an image of the eclipse onto the ground or a sheet of white paper. Pinhole projectors, colanders, a slotted spoon, a Ritz cracker, even lacing your fingers together.

Or you can look under a tree. The sun shining through tree leaves and branches creates its own pinhole projector, casting lots of little crescent-moon shapes on the ground.

What time is the eclipse in Florida?

The eclipse will last roughly 2½ hours in Florida, starting around 1:40 p.m. EDT and ending around 4:17 EDT. The time of maximum coverage will be just before 3 p.m. EDT for most of the state.

As North America gears up for the total solar eclipse on April 8, retailers are getting in on the buzz by giving out free glasses to safely view the celestial event.

Viewing solar eclipses or the sun directly -- whether through a camera lens or the naked eye -- without proper protection can lead to serious eye injuries and potentially cause vision loss, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology .

The American Astronomical Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology have emphasized the critical need for eye protection, cautioning that looking at the sun without proper safeguards can seriously harm our eyes much like how a magnifying glass can use sunlight to ignite a fire.

The sun's rays, when focused by the eye's lens, which normally helps us see clearly, can burn the retina and lead to solar retinopathy , according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. This condition may cause persistent vision issues or even irreversible sight loss.

Regular sunglasses do not offer the protection our eyes need during such an event, the American Academy of Ophthalmology states. The gold standard for safety is to use special-purpose solar filters. These are found in eclipse glasses adhering to the ISO 12312-2 standard.

This celestial event marks the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044. Those hoping for a glimpse, however, will need to take precautions to avoid injury. If you're looking for free eclipse glasses, here are retailers and local libraries to visit.

Warby Parker, a New York City-based eyeglass retailer with over 200 stores across the United States and Canada, has announced it will distribute free ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses to ensure safe viewing for spectators.

Starting April 1, individuals can visit any Warby Parker retail location to receive up to two pairs of solar eclipse glasses at no cost, subject to availability, according to the company. These glasses are ISO-certified and meet the stringent safety standards required for direct observation of the celestial phenomenon, according to Warby Parker's website .

When the solar eclipse will begin and peak in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. -- The partial solar eclipse will begin in Richmond, Virginia at 2:02 p.m. The sun will be 83% covered for a few minutes at 3:18 p.m. The eclipse in Richmond, Virginia will end at 4:31 p.m.

Do not look at the eclipse without special glasses.

The path of totality (where the sun is 100% covered) will include parts of Indiana, Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and western and northern New York state.

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse happens when the moon gets directly in between the Earth and the sun. Essentially, the moon is casting its shadow on the Earth.

These events can only ever happen during the new moon phase. A lunar cycle takes 29.5 days, but solar eclipses don't always happen during new moons. Usually, the moon's shadow goes just above or just below the earth.

But on April 8, the shadow will go directly over parts of North America.

What is the difference between a partial and total solar eclipse.

For most Americans, they will get to view — with proper eye protection — a partial solar eclipse. That is when the moon blocks some of the sun's light, but not all. Many major Northeastern U.S. cities can witness over 80% of the sun's light being blocked by the moon.

The total eclipse is far more spectacular. That is when the moon blocks all of the sun's light from directly reaching the Earth. The only visible part of the sun is its corona, which makes up the sun's outermost gases.

Even for areas that will have over 50% of the sun blocked, the effects of a solar eclipse are barely noticeable.

“If you're near the path of totality, take a couple hours off work or school and get in the car and just drive as close as you can to the middle of it. You don't need any special place, just a safe place to park your car and get out," said Terry Virts, retired NASA astronaut.

What will I see during a total solar eclipse?

Besides the sun's corona, the sky will become twilight-dark. It will also be possible to see some of the brightest stars and planets, including Venus and Jupiter. These moments will be fleeting, however.

Totality will last anywhere from a few seconds to just over four minutes, depending on how close to the center of the path of totality you are.

It won't be midnight-dark outside but similar to the brightness just after dusk.

What will I need to view the total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse can be viewed without any eye protection — but only for the up-to-four minutes of totality is it safe to view the eclipse without eye protection.

For most of the duration of the eclipse, you will need to view the eclipse with glasses. NASA said solar eclipse glasses should be marked with ISO 12312-2 on them to confirm they are safe for usage during a solar eclipse.

Eclipse glasses can be reused indefinitely as long as they don't have any scratches or blemishes on the lens.

If you're unable to find eclipse glasses, another option is to make a pinhole camera using paper, a push pin, tape, scissors, and paper clip.
