Next up is NF’s facetious “MOTTO”, of which The New York Times says, “in his early career, NF sounded as if he was internalizing all the pressures of the world, but now he sounds free and calm, dismissing those same pressures with a shrug.” Watch the pointed video HERE.

NF raps with raw grit and emotional authenticity, born of a lifetime of taking hits and getting back up again. He’s earned 39 RIAA certifications,14 Platinum plaques, and 5 multi-Platinum honors. This success stems from genuine fan-fueled momentum — connecting directly with fans in an authentic way.

His intimate yet propulsive tracks received two consecutive No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 with Perception and The Search. Often silent on self-promotion and social media, NF’s massive achievements come straight from his music and lyrics resonating with fans. As Forbes noted, “NF’s success speaks to what can be done these days outside of the traditional system, proving that with his strong fan base and his incredible drive, the success of NF is a true testament to his status as a talent in the hip hop world.”

Nate Feuerstein came of age in Michigan, using music as both escape and expression, a way to channel his pain. Through the years, he’s demonstrated the power of vulnerability on hits like “Let You Down” and “The Search.” In 2015, he signed with Capitol Records; thus setting the stage to climb to rap dominance beginning with his album, Mansion followed by Therapy Session in 2016 and Perception in 2017, which debuted at No. 1 and eventually went 2x Platinum. In 2019, he dropped The Search, which also hit No. 1 and went Platinum. His 2021 project CLOUDS (THE MIXTAPE), an inward-looking mixtape, again connected deeply with listeners, debuting within the top three on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart and Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart.

Today, NF has tipped into global dominance having generated 30 billion streams and worldwide touring that has sold over half a million tickets to date. Emerging from a year of no new releases yet remaining one of the most consumed artists in the world, NF announces his forthcoming fifth studio album, HOPE.

About Cordae:

Cordae knows exactly what he wants to say. He chooses his words and phrases carefully. He speaks from a place of truth. That’s why the two-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated gold-selling Maryland-raised rapper has quietly become one of the modern generation’s most trusted narrators. A remarkable life has given him a lot to say. He went from trailer parks and public housing with his mom to stratospheric success. After a series of buzzing singles, he reached critical mass with his 2019 full-length debut, The Lost Boy. It bowed in the Top 15 of the Billboard Top 200 and included four gold-certified singles— “RNP” [feat. Anderson .Paak], “Have Mercy,” “Broke As Fuck,” and “Kung Fu.” Beyond unanimous praise from Billboard, Complex, High Snobiety, New York Times, Pitchfork, and Stereogum, he garnered a pair of GRAMMY® Award nominations in the categories of “Best Rap Album” for The Lost Boy and “Best Rap Song” for “Bad Idea” [feat. Chance the Rapper].

He’s the rare artist whose presence can be felt on-screen in a Super Bowl commercial alongside legendary Academy® Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and among XXL’s coveted “Freshman Class.” Along the way, he linked up with Roddy Ricch and Ant Clemons for “Gifted” as well as joining forces with Eminem for “Killer.” Absorbing wisdom from a life-changing trip to Africa, enduring the loss of a friend gone too soon, and evolving as an artist and a man, he tells this story in widescreen technicolor on his 2022 second full-length offering, From A Birds Eye View [ART@WAR/Atlantic Records]. Cordae followed up the release of his sophomore album with the Facebook exclusive premiere of his visual only, From A Birds Eye View (Live) album. This past summer, he debuted his first TED Talk entitled “The Hi-Level Mindset” which has accumulated over 1.4M views. He continued his takeover of 2022 with a flurry of releases and collaborations. From the release of his Unacceptable EP and the accompanying visuals from both singles, to his recent collab with Hit-Boy on their “Checkmate” track from the Madden NFL 2023 Soundtrack, Cordae is showing no signs of slowing down.

If the cap fits … rapper NF.

Rapper NF: ‘In the Christian world everyone wants to pretend everything is OK’

The Nashville-based artist has attracted a huge audience with his deeply personal rhymes about depression, trauma and ‘the Almighty’ – just don’t call him a Christian rapper

T he week I meet Nashville-based rapper Nathan John Feuerstein, AKA NF, at his Tennessee home in April, his latest record – Hope – hits No 2 in both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK album chart, as well as in Australia, Canada and Norway, and No 1 in the Netherlands. He has form: his last two albums topped the US charts. This summer, he will embark on a 30-date North America arena tour; each show on its October European leg has already sold out. The walls of the home studio space in the outskirts of America’s Music City are lined with platinum records from across the globe. Yet, despite his evident success, the 32-year-old musician is something of an unknown entity; elusive, with little name recognition beyond his loyal fanbase. Rarely will you hear his music on the radio; his latest album received little by way of media fanfare or reviews. And, lying back on a large cream sofa, he says he likes it that way.

“In the music industry the perception of how big artists are, and how big they really are, is often really different,” Feuerstein says. “Most people would say I’m small. I might be under the radar, and rarely have my day-to-day life interrupted, but I can come to your city and sell 10,000 tickets, and release albums that sell. I’d rather have a touring business and a culty fanbase behind the scenes – be actually killing it – than have people think I’m killing it. The way I look at it, I have the best of both worlds.”

It is just one of the apparent contradictions that shape our 90-minute conversation. He is signed to a Christian imprint of Universal Music Group, came up in the Christian music scene, and often raps about God, but rejects the label of Christian rapper. “I started out in the Christian space,” he says, “but I didn’t really like it … it’s not where I see myself today.”

Throughout his career, comparisons have been made with Eminem, and not solely because there aren’t many other chart-topping white rappers from Michigan. Certainly on NF’s earlier records, his childhood hero’s influence was somewhat inescapable. As Pitchfork put it in its review of his 2019 album, The Search, Eminem’s “brooding persona and twisty delivery NF copies with the reverence of a 16th-century Japanese painter replicating the masters”. But previously he has been reluctant to bring Eminem up at all.

“Most of the time,” he replies, when I ask why, “I don’t go into [Eminem] in interviews. It’s the headline people try to twist.” That said, Feuerstein brings up Eminem repeatedly. “Something you only experience once is that moment when, for the first time, an artist impacts your life deeply. For me, that was Eminem in my teens. He’s the biggest influence on my music still.”

And while his lyrics explore the most personal of topics – childhood abuse, mental health struggles, his mum’s suicide – he seems guarded in person, not wanting conversationally to give too much away: “I say what I want to say in my music,” he says. “I don’t want to do it in interviews. Not being so visible, and not doing interviews? That has worked for me.”

Still, we cover some ground. Feuerstein grew up in Gladwin, small-town Michigan. “We lived in a trailer for a while. My parents got divorced when I was young. Dad remarried. I lived with my grandparents. I got into music at some stage. I had anger issues – it was a release.” He had a karaoke machine in his bedroom. One microphone would point towards his CD player pumping out a beat, on the other he would freestyle. The results would be recorded on to tape. Raised in a Christian family, faith-based music was a big influence early on: he namechecks two-time Grammy-winning Christian rapper Lecrae , Andy Mineo and LA’s Gospel Gangstaz. In his late teens, he worked as an electrician while uploading self-produced original tracks to YouTube. In 2014, he signed to Capitol Christian Music Group (then EMI Christian Music Group).

He seems reluctant to talk much about his break in Christian music (his first two albums after signing a record deal charted at No 1 in the US Christian charts). “It’s not that I didn’t want to be with a mainstream label,” he says, “but that’s all I knew.” Content-wise, his music did reference “the Almighty”, but he felt his outlook didn’t chime with other artists on the scene. “In the Christian world everyone wants to pretend everything is OK,” he says. “It feels sometimes like the end of songs have to have this great, positive ending. I wasn’t there. My music didn’t fit, because I didn’t feel that way.”

It wasn’t his only misgiving about the Christian scene: “There are tons of details I could give you about things that didn’t make sense,” he says. “People used God as an excuse for why they didn’t do their jobs well … If you’re playing a show at a church, it’s not really your show. You’re an entertainer. At church shows, people turn up, but it’s not for you.” He started to swap church gigs for clubs, and never looked back. Mostly, however, he says he realised what separated him from self-defined Christian rappers was his output’s intent. “I’m not a worship artist,” he says. “That’s not my music’s purpose. I don’t think I’m a preacher. I want anyone to listen to my music, believe in God or not.” He sees himself, instead, as a rapper who is Christian and references his faith in his work, much like many contemporary hip-hop artists: Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Drake.

While God is a definite presence in NF’s lyrics, far more notable is darkness and pain. Previously, songs have included Hate Myself (“Suicide thoughts come and go like a guest to me”) and Trauma (“Scream and yell, but I feel speechless / Ask for help, you call it weakness”). There’s also How Could You Leave Us, a 2016 track about his mum’s suicide by overdose.

after newsletter promotion

“The first song about my mum? It was a dark, sad, emotional track,” he says. “The hardest thing I ever recorded.” Back then, the raw pain was palpable (“I ain’t gon’ say that I forgive you ’cos it hasn’t happened … If you really cared for me, then where you at then?”) There’s another track about his mum on his new album, titled Mama, that serves as a tonal shift (“I ever make it up there when I see you / I hope you’re smilin’, ’cos you deserve it”). Generally, he’s in a better place today. “I’m not all perfect now,” he says. “I put an album out called Hope, but I’ve still got a lot of growing to do. A couple of weeks ago I was depressed for three days straight. But I do feel hopeful more than I used to [be]. When I wrote [the 2019 album] The Search I was so depressed that I couldn’t function.”

I had arrived in Nashville expecting to discuss the city’s burgeoning Christian rap scene with an artist who, on paper, I believed to be its biggest hitmaker. Instead, and despite my best efforts, we’re talking in broad terms about abandonment, being controlling, and how determined he is to build a stable childhood for his young son. It is this vulnerability, alongside his technical rap ability (much like Eminem, he has a capacity to squeeze impressively long lyrics into the smallest of spaces) that explains Feuerstein’s popularity among a fiercely dedicated online crowd. As his following grows, how will he handle an increase in interest? He seems unsure. He’s certainly struggling to enjoy his success to date. “My wife tells me I’m always stressed about the next show, the next video, the next album … I never enjoy the here and now. Before you know it, I’ll be 40 and done making music. And, man, I never enjoyed it? I’m trying to work on that.”

For all the distance he puts between himself and the Christian scene, it’s on the topic of faith and religion that he seems most at ease. “Everything in the world works together,” he says, now smiling, “Like, animals taking a dump and using it to grow more food? It’s crazy bro. Babies being born. God had to create that … I’m sure every artist says this,” he says, ‘but I really need music. I believe in God. I think we all have a purpose: as human beings we need one; a reason to exist. I think my purpose on this planet is to make music. So that’s what I’ll do.”

NF’s album H ope is out now.

NF Announces Massive Hope Tour With Support From Cordae

NF has announced he’ll be embarking on a massive tour in support of his upcoming album HOPE — in addition, Cordae has been tapped as his special guest.

On Thursday (March 30), the Michigan rapper unveiled his upcoming tour dates, which will treck through US, Canada, and Europe in support of his forthcoming album.

The North American tour kicks off on July 12 at Schottenstein Center in Columbus, taking in dates in Boston, Philadelphia, Orlando, Denver, Portland, Toronto and more.

The 16-date European leg kicks off on September 23 at the Fabrique in Milan, along with stops in Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland and more, before wrapping up in London on October 15.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NF (@nfrealmusic)

Regarding ticketing information, verified fans can register now until Sunday (April 2)  here . Fans can also visit the rapper’s official website  to access additional pre-sale information. General tickets go on-sale Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. local time.

Due out April 7, NF’s new project, HOPE , will be his first since 2019’s The Search . The Christian rapper shared the album’s title track back in February alongside an accompanying visual.

The profound Patrick Tohill-directed clip finds NF examining his internal struggles while stranded by himself on a wooden treebark platform in the middle of the ocean. He miraculously makes his way to the shoreline in inspiring fashion.

In contrast to his all-white wardrobe, an NF draped in black invades the scene and pushes him through the roof of what appears to be a prison of sorts, where he’s forced to combat the struggles going on inside his head.

The Michigan native’s previous two albums both went No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 2019’s The Search pulling the upset over Chance The Rapper’s The Big Day to nab the top spot .

On the album he addressed his constant comparisons with Eminem , among other things. His knack for personal lyricism and over melodramatic production made the project an impactful listening experience and validation for the aforementioned comparison.

In the time between his last LP, NF delivered his CLOUDS (THE MIXTAPE) project in 2021, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and saw guest appearances from Tech N9ne and Hopsin.

Last month NF  returned with the stirring new single “HOPE”  ( NF Real Music/Virgin Music ). The song finds  the multi-Platinum hitmaker at his most raw and unfiltered as he assesses his musical journey thus far and looks to the future. Hope is accompanied by a suitably uplifting visual, which captures the MC’s defiance and authenticity.

Next up is NF’s facetious “MOTTO”, of which The New York Times says, “ in his early career, NF sounded as if he was internalizing all the pressures of the world, but now he sounds free and calm, dismissing those same pressures with a shrug.” Watch the pointed video  HERE.

HOPE ? is the fifth studio album from the Billboard chart-topping, multi-platinum artist. Known for rapping quick-witted lyrics over hip hop beats and cinematic production, NF has built an obsessively loyal fanbase that has earned him over 30 billion global streams and established NF as one of the most consumed artists today. NF’s? HOPE ?is a 13-track album boasting instant hits, such as “HAPPY”, “MOTTO” and notable Grammy-nominated features with singer/songwriter Julia Michaels on “GONE,” and rapper Cordae on “CAREFUL”.

CONCERT REVIEW – NF AND CORDAE DELIVER PASSIONATE AND THOUGHTFUL PERFORMANCES

Kevin Bourne

Rapper NF brought his Hope Tour to Toronto with a stop at Scotiabank Arena. Here’s SHIFTER’s Kevin Bourne with his NF concert review.

Friday night, NF brought his Hope Tour to Toronto as the Michigan rapper performed in front of a capacity crowd at Scotiabank Arena .

Opening for NF was lyricist and soon-to-be father, Cordae , who performed tracks like “Chronicles” and “ RNP” . Known for having a gift with the bars, he also brought the party vibes, performing his new single “Make Up Your Mind” , one of his first times performing the song live.

Over his set, Cordae showed that he has evolved from simply being the young l yricist who some hoped would keep real hip-hop alive, to a well-rounded artist who can sing catchy hooks with consistent and strong vocals, while still giving us bars. On stage, he’s like a young J. Cole when it comes to his versatility and style.

Then, with energy and anticipation in the air, NF took to the stage, performing tracks like “MOTTO” , “Leave” , “My Stress” , “Time” , “Paid My Dues” , “Why” , “Hate Myself” , and “Careful” , where he was joined by Cordae .

Then came a wardrobe change as he switched from dark earth tones to head-to-toe white as the mood switched from dark and angsty to hopeful.

nf concert

After showing home movies of himself as a baby and his late mother, who died from a drug overdose, he performed his song “MAMA” as an emotional tribute to her. Just when he teased that the show was over, NF unexpectedly moved to a smaller and more intimate stage at back of the arena to get closer to fans. From there, he performed “Let You Down” , “Gone” , and “Running” before closing out the show on the big stage with “When I Grow Up” , “Returns” , and “Clouds” .

While his music may not be for everyone, NF stands out for a number of reasons.

First, he’s a lmost counterculture when it comes to hip-hop with his lyricism, sound and messaging. When it comes to his delivery, he’s like a young Eminem with a message. Where other rappers are still talking about drugs and violence, NF uses his platform to create meaningful, impactful and passionate music that people of all ages can enjoy, with young people, families and the occasional grandparent wearing an NF t-shirt, to prove it.

What also stands out about NF is that he isn’t mainstream. You don’t hear his songs on the radio, but he can pack out arenas and have thousands of fans singing his songs word for word, showing the power of an artist’s relationship with his fans. He even took time during his show to sign autographs letting his fans know they matter. In a time where labels try to manufacture microwave stars, NF has built an organic and loyal fanbase that will keep him relevant for a long time.

nf hope tour who is nf

But most importantly, NF makes honest music for the soul that people, especially younger crowds, can relate to. It’s likes therapy for people who feel lost and misunderstood. NF lets them know that he sees them and they aren’t alone. Looking around at the thousands of people mouthing his lyrics, you can’t help but respect and applaud how he’s able to reach people.

You also can’t deny his abilities as a performer. He puts so much effort and thought into his show that you almost feel like other rappers are lazy. From the first song, you feel like you’re at a theatre production. The lighting, v ideo package and video effects were amazing as you’d expect; his visuals are usually grand and cinematic. Details like him popping out of the stage, as well as his movements on stage as he’s delivering his rhymes added energy and stage presence. Even if his music isn’t for you, a good show is a good show, and NF knows how to put on a good show.

SHIFTER editor, Kevin Bourne, is a Toronto-based entertainment journalist focusing on music and film & TV. He was named one of 310 international voters  for the  81st   Golden Globe Awards  by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and a  Tomatometer-Approved Critic  by Rotten Tomatoes.
