Laem Chabang, Thailand

The capital of Thailand fascinates tourists with its well-preserved culture, temples and palaces. The attractions are countless in Bangkok, and ships often spend two days here to allow passengers time to explore this extravagant city. Tours stop at the Royal Palace grounds, the solid-gold Buddha and the Emerald Buddha, and the Pantheon of Kings. Another popular excursion is a trip down the Chao Phraya River to the floating markets.

Singapore to Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.  Looks like 2 or 3 days in Bangkok.  Can you stay overnight?  Anyone know the hotel they use?  We are thinking to meet a friend there.

In Bangkok they use The Peninsula. My fav hotel in Asia. Yes, they have an overnight.

We did this cruise 3 years ago, on the Connie.

There was an overnight - you could arrange on your own or use Celebrity.

Excellent Advice!

I shudder to think what X charges for an overnight excursion. Without even looking, I can tell you that you can probably stay at a 5* hotel  for a whole lot less. We organized a small group private tour and stayed at a wonderful hotel in Bangkok on our overnight last year. Maybe check your roll call to see if someone is doing something similar.

Does anyone know what Celebrity charges for an overnight stay?  Looks like rooms start at $300 USD.

Checking our Cruise Planner for the 2day 1 night Bangkok excursion Celebrity is charging $447.50 per adult.  We are doing this in November and 6 of us have hired a guide for 2 days, we will be picked up & returned to the port and have booked Club Lounge Rooms at the Royal Orchid Sheraton ( includes breakfast, hors d’eouvers cocktails & dessert) cost per couple $440; half of the Celebrity excursion.

I found the Millenniums excursions in Bangkok here:.  https://www.celebritycruises.com/ca/ports/bangkok/shore-excursions

Their cheapest price is obscene for Bangkok.

Our private tour (with 8 people)included a van and driver plus tour guide who picked us up at the pier, drove us into and back from the city, an evening food tour, and next-day city tour of palaces and temples came to $360 CDN per  couple. Our hotel with breakfast (the Easton Grand Sathorn) was $163 CDN for the night. So a little over $500 CDN for the 2 of us.

mdpa

We are doing a hybrid approach. We are using a Celebrity "drop us off in town and pick us up the next day" excursion. The price was reasonable and only about a block away from the St. Regis hotel (we are using points but the price also seemed reasonable).

The hotel is located directly across from the skytrain so we are looking forward to exploring on our own.

Through our roll call, we booked Oriental Express transfer to BK "pier to pier". The drop off was at the MBK mall and most of our fellow travellers choose to stay there. We paid a bit extra and continued to Chatrium Riverside hotel, which offered an early check in (we were in BK by 10.30). The hotel was amazing and cheap (110$ including a somptous b'fast).

The transfer was 24$ pp retour (we were 10 persons in the van). So all in all our transfer + hotel stay was 158$ ....

Can you give me some information on the Oriental Express Transfer BK "Pier to Pier".    I did some googling and didn't find them.   We will be taking the same cruise on Nov 10 and I like the idea of spending overnight in Bangkok.

Curious of the date you will be traveling as our Roll Call is pretty quiet so far.

Thanks so much.    I did find Oriental Escape.   I'll take a look.   The prices sounded great and I like the hotel you selected.   I'm pretty sure we will be doing at least one night maybe two.

Besides allowing us an early check in, the "rationale" behind choosing this hotel was that we wanted to travel to all the main attractions by water/ferry -- not the horendous traffic ib BK, and also "mingling" with the locals. The hotel provides a free shuttle to the main ferry station, and from there we travelled to all the "Watts"....

B'fast was served outside, right on the river, which was also very pleasant, and in the evening we went to "Asiatique" the river front, a mere 5 mins drive from the hotel -- again, with lots of locals. It was an unforgetable day and night in BK, we were very happy with how we spent the overnight there.

Check out travelhub bangkok We just did an overnight tour with them and were very pleased.

Wife and I used Oriental Escape a couple years ago for transport from port to hotel and back.

I highly recommend them and would use them again without hesitation.

Interesting to note that Celebrity has raised the prices of shore excursions.  I have three booked through them for our B2B2B transpacific cruise and Asia cruises for next Sept-November.  Two of the excursions I got at a discount when they were running a special, but all have gone up from the original cost.  The tour you refer to above is now $699 per person!

I read that the big heartburn with going to Bangkok is the terrible traffic and just getting to the city and back too the ship.

We  visited Bangkok in 1981, it was charming, except for being known as the sex tourist capital of the World.

Traffic was terrible even in 1981.

If you think traffic was bad in 1981 it is far worse now.    Then again if I compare the traffic in Silicon Valley from 1981 to today it is about 10x worse.

Is it about 3 hours from port to Bangkok?  Do buses in SE Asia have bathrooms or do they stop every 2 hours give or take?

15 minutes ago, zitsky said: Is it about 3 hours from port to Bangkok?

The journey in the morning to BK took less than 2.5 hours.

The 2nd day we took off at 1PM at were back on the ship a few mins after 3PM — much quicker....

That’s why it was important to us to book a hotel which advertised “early check in”. We left our luggage, took a refreshing shower and were good for a long day of “work”...

NCHPcruiser

The traffic in Bangkok is horrendous!  We had a private guide (this was a land trip) and used the sky train.  There is no way we could have seen and done everything we did had we been in a car, van or bus!  The majority of our time would have been spent in traffic.  A small group or private tour is the only way to see Bangkok.

I would like to hear back from anyone who did a tour through the cruise line on a Celebrity southeast Asia cruise.  Was it a mistake?*

*There seems to be agreement that private is much better.

We had 3 days in Hong Kong on our recent B2B  cruise. The first day we booked a Celebrity tour that did Victoria Peak, Stanley Market and a boat trip around Aberdeen harbor. Cost was reasonable and tour lasted 7 hours. All in all, a good tour and we don't usually book Celebrity tours.

I not do many tours not through Celebrity. But in this case as it is a 3 night stay and that Bangkok can be 3 hours away. Book a private tour.

Anyone done a Thailand/Asia cruise?

By Savage2017 , December 13, 2023 in Celebrity Cruises

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

We are looking at a 12 night cruise in 2024. Starts Singapore or Hong Kong and ends in Singapore or Hong Kong. Stops include Bangkok/Laemchbang Thailand, Ko Samui Thailand, Ho Chi Minh (Phu My) Vietnam, NHA Trang Vietnam, HUE/Danang (Chan May) Vietnam, Hanoi (Halong Bay) Vietnam.

For anyone who has done this cruise or something similar, would love to know what you thought.

Did you find there were things to do at the ports or did you end up doing excursions in order to see the sites? Only wondering as if it’s all excursions we have to do it can be exhausting and add to price.

We did this cruise in late 2019 on Azamara. It was a great cruise but shore excursions are definitely a must since the ports as away from  the sites in most locations.. Only in Singapore and Hong Kong the ports are adjacent to shopping centers, but again you would want to take tours to see real highlights.

If you do private excursions with small groups from the Roll Call you will save a lot of $ compared to the cost of ship excursions and see more.  We just did private tours in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Mumbai each was about 1/2 the price of ships excursions and we were a group of 5 for 2 and 4 for the other.

DW and I did a 14 night cruise on Millie (2nd after being revolutionized in Feb 2019). Was Hong Kong to Singapore. A few overnight ports, Hong Kong, Phu My and Singapore. Have to say the highlight was Halong Bay. As Dabear said most ports are quite a distance from the Cities and major attractions but still worth the long travel times. We enjoyed the cruise very much. I think Solstice now does that part of the world so larger ship with more amenities and specialty restaurants.

mahdnc

We will be doing the 12 night Singapore to Hong Kong sailing next week (Christmas/NYE cruise).  It will be our first time there.  I will likely be posting a live thread during this cruise which you may find of interest.  If you have questions during the cruise, I will try to answer them.

We did a similar cruise in 2019 on Connie from Singapore to Shanghai. I really encourage you to spend a couple of days before and after the cruise, to explore both Singapore and Hong Kong. We did both of those cities DIY- transportation is easy. All of the other ports we dui as private tours with members of our Roll Call. Our guides were excellent, and with a small group, we had none of the inevitable  delays from large bus tours, and they were way cheaper than the ship excursions.

If you have an overnight in Bangkok, do yourself a favor and arrange an overnight at a hotel in the city, and a private guide to tour the temples, canals,  and markets. Hopefully with a few of your Roll Call members to defray the tour costs.

Just got off the Solstice doing the itinerary. It was a great time and great itinerary.

We did the Singapore to Hong Kong route and if I could go back I would do the reverse way.

We found that the long day in Hanoi at the end  of the cruise was a little much even though there was a sea day after as the last day.

As for excursions, you’re not in any actual cities and will have to travel to get somewhere.

Also I found there’s more to do in HK and would be better for a pre cruise stay over Singapore.

We did exactly the same as you did, staying overnight at a hotel in Bangkok too. Ours was on Millie over Christmas a few years ago now - Hong Kong to Singapore 2016. We also sailed in one of the FVs at the aft which was fabulous. All of our private tour guides were brilliant and most we sorted with others from our roll call.

Thanks so much everyone, some great info there we really appreciate it. We have haven’t done these stops before so it’s great to get the advise.

If we do the cruise we may not have the time off work to stay on longer at the end Would ye suggest starting the cruise at Singapore or Hong Kong. We are hoping to arrive couple days prior to the start of the cruise but unsure if we have the time to stay on at the end.

Looking forward to the mahdnc cruise review next week. 😉

photabitha

We have done this cruise twice now around end January/February and both from Singapore on the Millennium and due to do it again in 2025.

Most of the ports in Vietnam are a long way from any of the popular sites.  An excursion is a must, either with the ship or private/with a group.   Getting off the ship in Halong Bay (amazing sail in) is something you can do and this has developed a lot over the years.  Hong Kong and Singapore also are ports you can hop off and easily transverse.  However, these will be at the beginning or end of your cruise.

As another person has mentioned, Bangkok is an overnight.  We have a ship tour of Bangkok on your own, book a hotel on the river and you can either book tours, or see quite a lot from the water taxis on your own as many of the sites are near to the river.

On our next visit, we will be leaving from Hong Kong and ending in Singapore and a couple of days at the end.

Be aware the weather in Hong Kong and Halong Bay can be chilly so be prepared clothes wise.  The rest of the ports were hot.  We did get one beautiful day in Halong Bay on our last trip, but on the first visit it was raining and freezing cold.

Great to hear about this cruise schedule which we are doing in 2024.

look forward to seeing mahdnc live account in coming days.

ls the trip on Solstice?

As mentioned, many of the ports in Asia are quite a ways from a seaport. We ended up doing a river cruise in Asia and it was great - aside from an unrelated covid issue. Ho chi Minh - def do the cu chi tunnels. In Hanoi we did an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise. In Bangkok, you can hit the main temples in one day. We did a canal tour and floating market on the second day.

hawkesbaynz

Recently did the Singapore to HK on Solstice. Vietnam is pretty port intensive so if we were to again I would choose HK to Singapore as more sea days at the end.

We really enjoyed Hanoi but I think an overnight cruise would be a great option. The only tour we did with X was a very overpriced overnight tour. Reaffirmed our usual choice of small group tours.

I booked three of the Vietnam port stops with Xuan Le Tours. He is a fantastic tour guide. We had a group of eight filled through the Roll Call.

We had been to Bangkok previously so choose to visit Pattaya and stayed in a great Intercontinental Hotel overnight. However Pattaya City  is not an attractive place to visit (repulsive DW would say) so I would encourage you visit Bangkok.

Haha

We are booked on the Solstice in March 2025, Singapore to Hong Kong and both the visits to Bangkok & Hanoi have overnights in port, we have booked private transfers & Hotels for both to enjoy the nightlife and eliminate the travel fatigue cramming into one day.

21 hours ago, mahdnc said: We will be doing the 12 night Singapore to Hong Kong sailing next week (Christmas/NYE cruise).  It will be our first time there.  I will likely be posting a live thread during this cruise which you may find of interest.  If you have questions during the cruise, I will try to answer them.

Very much looking forward to your "festive" live thread as we will be embarking  the Solstice in HK when you disembark.

Last Christmas we did a holiday cruise that was round trip Singapore, but we did Phuket and Penang and Kuala Lumpur instead of Vietnam so I can't help you with those ports.

I will say that you need at least three days to really explore Singapore pre-cruise and that our stay at the Pan Pacific was amazing and surprisingly our more budget choice of the Park Avenue Rochester was also quite nice.  Everything is very reachable by the metro system which is clean, cheap, and works with Apple pay. 🙂

Just a check about not needing to apply for VISAS on the Celebrity  cruise from Singapore through to Japan   (March 4 2024).

We are from UK.

As I understand it we do not need to apply ourselves for a visa in any of the places  - Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong  South Korea or Japan.

Is this what other Brits are thinking too?

A lot of you have mentioned it’s cheaper to do the excursions through the roll calls. I tried to google the ship excursions but finding them hard to find, wanted to see just how much they are or what is offered?

Also is it expensive to stay in bankgok for the overnight ?

Thailand and Vietnam are incredibly cheap countries. You can easily book a hotel through any of the major booking sites at a fantastic price. The best price for shore excursions will be to rent a vehicle and guide for the day and split the cost with another group on your roll call.

We did two days through "Your Thai Guide" when we were there. The guide was $100 per day. We used public transport since we were already in the city, but you can rent a car from them for $100 per day. Up to 4 people can take the tour so, you are talking about a full day private tour for $50 each. Our guide was wonderful.

Correct. Just ensure passports valid for 6 months after your stay.

We’ve visited Vietnam and Thailand many times on land based holidays but have booked this cruise for 2025 as we couldn’t resist  the price. We booked a Sky suite for only £2700 ($3400) per person. A veranda cabin was only $120 less!!  I agree with all previous comments book your own excursions and try and spend some time in Singapore and Hong Kong, both are fabulous cities  to visit.

Duration 10 hrs

Experience the beauty of one of Bangkok's lesser-known treasures during this full-day visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya.

Depart the pier for the 3-hour drive to historic Ayutthaya. Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 AD, and remained the kingdom's capital for 417 years until 1767 AD, when it was conquered and destroyed by the Burmese. Visit the exquisite Bang Pa-In Summer Palace, formerly a popular summer retreat for Thai kings. The Palace includes one of the most photographed buildings in the kingdom, a charming Thai pavilion built over a pond.

Drive to the historic center of Ayutthaya and visit the Historical Park to explore some of Ayutthaya's most famous and interesting ruins. A part of the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the day, you’ll enjoy lunch at a local hotel.

  • Adult from: € 205,33 EUR
  • Child from: € 139,70 EUR

Duration 9 hrs

Explore Bangkok's exotic sites during this memorable visit to the Grand Palace, and the city's main shopping area.

Depart the pier for the drive to the Grand Palace, which showcases the most beautiful example of an ancient Siamese Court. Different palaces were built and named for different occasions; the Funeral Palace, Reception Palace, Throne Hall, Coronation Hall and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, perhaps the most breathtaking of them all. The Buddha is made of translucent green jasper, and the king changes its vestments three times a year during a solemn ceremony.

After a buffet style lunch, a stop will be made at the Gems Gallery, where you can browse among a range of vibrant Thai silks and souvenirs before being transferred back to the pier.

  • Child from: € 120,95 EUR

Duration 8 hrs

Explore daily life in Bangkok during this picturesque boat trip through the city that focuses on life along Bangkok's canals.

Depart the pier for the drive to Bangkok, where upon arrival you will board a boat for a scenic cruise along the canals, or klongs, of the Chao Praya River. Along the way, you will see the small wooden houses that rise on stilts from the water. You will also encounter many long, flat boats laden with exotic produce and colorful fare plying the waterways, and carrying on trade as they did centuries ago.

Your tour along these fascinating waterways includes a stop at the beautiful Temple of Dawn, or Wat Arun, and a visit to the Royal Barge Shed, where the impressively ornate ceremonial barges are stored when not in use.

Following your time at the Royal Barge shed, you will transfer to a local restaurant for lunch before driving back to Laem Chabang.

Browse a conservation center with a nursery that breeds sea turtles for release into the ocean and a museum that showcases the life cycles of these marine creatures. The Royal Thai Navy Sea Turtle Conservation Center was established decades ago in response to Queen Siriket’s initiative to raise awareness of the plight of sea turtles, whose numbers were rapidly declining in Thailand. The center releases a staggering 20,000 sea turtles into the surrounding sea each year. Yet the turtles still suffer a low survival rate – as little as 1 in 1,000 – from dangers such as being entangled in commercial fishing nets, ingesting plastic trash and pollution. You will see tanks full of hatchlings, mostly hawksbill and green sea turtles, and discover how, when and where they are typically released into the wild. You may also peruse the displays of nesting sites and see where sick and injured sea turtles are rehabilitated.

  • See how endangered sea turtles are bred at a conservation center for release into the ocean.
  • Gain an understanding why sea turtle hatchlings have such a low survival rate in the wild.
  • Browse museum displays that show the life cycles of hawksbill and green sea turtles.
  • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

Pattaya Floating Market

Duration 3 1/2 hrs

Get a genuine feel for river life by exploring the Pattaya floating market, which vendors in small wooden boats supply with all sorts of local goods. The market is divided into four sections, each representing a different region of Thailand. Although just opened in 2008, the market looks much older as it was designed to replicate an ancient floating market, most of which have long been abandoned. During free time at the market, you might sample items such as dragon fruit and mangosteen—the national fruit of Thailand—and linger over a freshly prepared lunch that is characteristic of one of the four regions. With so many aromas enticingly wafting through the air, it will be hard to resist dining. But the floating market offers much more than food. You will also find unusual handicrafts, silverware, handmade bags and silk clothing. The atmosphere couldn’t be more inviting.

HIGHLIGHTS: • Browse the incredible array of merchandise at the Pattaya floating market. • Get a sense of river life, as the locals purchase items directly from the vendors on boats. • Marvel at the design of the floating market, a replica of an ancient floating market.

Local Life Experience

Duration 6 1/2 hrs

Experience daily life in the fertile agricultural countryside and delve into Thailand’s spiritual side by visiting the area’s most important Buddhist temple. While it will take two hours to reach Chachoengsao, it will be well worth the effort. The Bang Pakong River supplies abundant water to the area, and rice especially flourishes there. As you will discover by browsing the century-old Klong Suan Market with the locals, every imaginable type of food is available. Best of all, many vendors offer samples. For an entirely different perspective of the area, you will visit Luang Pho Sothon, a temple with a revered statue of Buddha that according to legend was found floating down the river. Chances are, you will see worshippers praying for prosperity and others leaving offerings. Women often leave boiled eggs in hopes of becoming pregnant. While wandering about the temple, be sure to notice the artwork, especially the painted murals of religious scenes.

HIGHLIGHTS: • Enjoy a leisurely and immensely picturesque drive into the agricultural countryside. • Browse Klong Suan Market with the locals as they peruse the seemingly endless stalls. • Visit a beloved Buddhist temple and mingle with the worshippers and pilgrims.

Ang Sila Village & Nong Mon Bamboo Sticky Rice

Duration 4 1/2 hrs

Mingle with the locals in two coastal areas known more for their signature products than their beaches and seaside attractions. You will first visit Ang Sila, an engaging city revered for its hand-carved stoneware, especially granite mortars and pestles used for grinding spices. This prized piece of kitchenware is prevalent throughout Ang Sila, which means “stone basin.” Even so, fishing is the primary industry and most of the local seafood recipes call for spices—preferably ground with a stone mortar and pestle. Sticky rice is the iconic product associated with the Chon Buri province. Served as a signature dessert known as Khao Lam, sticky rice is typically mixed with coconut milk, black beans, sugar and salt before being roasted over an open fire in a stout bamboo tube. As you will discover firsthand at the Nong Mon Market, Khao Lam is a delicious treat any time of the day.

HIGHLIGHTS: • Meander through two beautiful coastal areas known for rather unusual signature products. • Learn why Ang Sila is revered for its stone mortars and pestles and buy one if you wish. • Sample the iconic sticky rice dessert long associated with Nong Mon Market.

Wood Pavilion - Sanctuary of Truth

Duration 4 1/4 hrs

Experience the mystic ancient beauty, tradition and art of Thailand during this visit to the Wooden Pavilion. Head to North Pattaya to visit this pavilion also known as “The Sanctuary of Truth”. It is a mystical building constructed according to ancient Thai specifications and the largest wood-carved structure in Thailand.

Designed as a pagoda-shaped pavilion, the building is over 340 feet tall. It is a fusion of religion, culture and art. Originally crafted entirely from Thailand's native teak, parts of the Wooden Pavilion have been replaced by the more durable redwood to withstand the ravages of the salt air. Every square inch of the building is covered with intricate and detailed wooden sculptures depicting the Ancient Vision of Earth, Ancient Knowledge and Eastern Philosophy. Once inside, you’ll have an opportunity to view the cavernous inner chapel, which reveals scenes from Chinese, Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

After exploring the pavilion and surrounding grounds, you will drive back to the ship along the beautiful Pattaya Beach Road with a stop at a shopping store where you can browse among a range of vibrant Thai silks and souvenirs.

Thailand At Its Most Colorful: Bangkok Shore Excursions

You’ll quickly understand how Bangkok came to be Thailand’s bustling, modern capital city and one of Asia’s top destinations on a shore excursion. Among ancient temples and historic sites, there are also some of the world’s biggest skyscrapers. There are plenty of things to do in Bangkok from a cruise, whether you’re exploring its downtown or taking in thousands of years of history at Erawan Shrine or the Grand Palace. Thai royalty doesn’t live inside the Grand Palace anymore, but the palace remains one of the most visited sites in all of Bangkok.

When your cruise to Bangkok docks at this popular port of call, you might be torn between city-centered or more natural Bangkok shore excursions. Luckily, Bangkok has a little bit of everything. If you love ancient ruins and walking in the footsteps of history, head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayutthaya, like Wat Chaiwatthanaram and Wat Mahatha. Don’t miss the chance to shop for fabric and clothing at the famous Pratunam Market in the city. Then there’s the incredible floating market of Damnoen Saduak, where vendors paddle over to you in tiny boats to sell their wares.

After enjoying a full day seeing Bangkok's best sites, you’ll find yourself pretty hungry. Westernized Thai food is often offered to tourists, but dare to eat adventurously in Thailand, whether that’s authentic pad thai or curries. Fish and dried eels are sold at local markets. The food in Thailand, particularly the street food, is a foodie’s dream of aromatic spices and unexpected flavor combinations.

Take a quick break from the hustle of downtown Bangkok and instead head to the village of Chachoengsao where you can tour ancient temples and walk the countryside before arriving at  Klong Suan Market for shopping and haggling with local vendors for their goods. You’ll find the oldest temple in the city at Wat Hong, and get a sense of the community’s faith and culture while you’re visiting.
