I must confess, Nevada stayed at the bottom of my USA bucket list destinations for a long time. The state is world-famous for its dazzling Las Vegas that impresses each and every traveler with its spectacular hotels and grand casinos. But what else can you do in the Silver State? What other places can you visit in Nevada that take your breath away and inspire you to come back?

In fact, there’re more bucket list destinations in the State of Nevada for both city dwellers and nature enthusiasts than one can imagine . The area first surprised us during our road trip through the American Southwest . As we had delved into the never-sleeping realm of Las Vegas many times before, the city didn’t make on our itinerary this time.

Its nearest neighbors, places you can visit on a day trip from the Entertainment Capital of the World, however, sneaked into our adventures in Nevada . What we didn’t expect was that the Silver State was about to shock us, in a good way. After copious prior visits to Nevada, we finally succumbed to its popular and lesser-known bucket list destinations.

To be completely clear, though, some of these places, such as Lake Tahoe or Death Valley National Park , need no introduction. Yet many travelers still regard these Nevada bucket list destinations as sole properties of California . We’re about to dispel these confusions forever. Shall we start our introduction to the 11 astounding bucket list destinations you must visit when in Nevada?

HERE ARE 11 ENCHANTING BUCKET LIST DESTINATIONS TO VISIT IN NEVADA:

Ok, we can’t omit it. Las Vegas has always topped the list of the best places to visit in Nevada. Luring with its neon lights and famous sights of the Strip, the Gambling Capital of the World is unavoidable. Not the biggest fan of Las Vegas myself ( Las Vegas is simply not for everybody ), I agree that you must visit this Nevada bucket list destination. Do it even if it’s just for the sake of assuaging your curiosity.

On the other hand, dimmed casino rooms full of slot machines and poker tables enveloped in cigarette smoke inspire millions of gamblers to visit Nevada. The City that Never Sleeps is the best of the best places to befriend Lady Luck after all.

Bucket List Destinations to Visit in Las Vegas, Nevada

Even if gambling barely arouses your interest, the nicest hotel lobbies in the world will keep you entertained for days. Are you dreaming of Roman holidays , but all you can afford is a visit to Nevada? Here is a piece of romantic Italy right on the Las Vegas Strip to make your dream come true.

Architecture lovers also find this area irresistible. Apart from the natural beauty and secluded resorts and hotels, Emerald Bay State Park houses the impeccable Vikingsholm castle. Designed in the best Scandinavian architectural traditions, the place is dubbed one of the greatest examples of historic structures in the American West .

Valley of Fire State Park

I have a confession to make. Valley of Fire State Park was one of the first Nevada bucket list destinations that persuaded me to visit and explore more of the Silver State. To say that it’s a place of incredible beauty is simply an understatement. Nestled about one hour away from Las Vegas, this Nevada’s gem contains some of the most stunning natural landmarks.

Swirling stripes and wave-like shape of the Fire Wave alone request an urgent visit to this part of Nevada. Add to it pink, red, beige, white, and yellows hues of Rainbow Vista , and you can’t help but ask for more of these miracles in the desert. Slot canyons’ lovers delight in hiking along the multifaceted White Domes Trail or venture into lesser-known areas near Pastel Canyon .

If it’s still not enough to declare Valley of Fire State Park one of the most surprising bucket list destinations to visit in Nevada, its ancient petroglyphs attest to the long human history of the state. Scrabbled on sandstone formations nearly 3,000 years ago, the primeval carvings are found mostly on Atlatl Rock or near Mouse’s Tank .  

Hoover Dam and Lake Mead National Recreation Area

If you plan to visit Las Vegas, Nevada, you absolutely must devote at least half a day to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Set on the Colorado River, about 37 miles from the city, the place separates Nevada and Arizona . The location of the dam, however, pales in comparison to its size. The marvel of modern engineering, as it’s often referred to, reaches a height of 726 feet.

The first place to dive into the rocky realm of Nevada is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area .

Home to the towering red sandstone formations, this bucket list destination sits in the Nevada’s Mojave Desert, about 20-minute drive from Las Vegas. Visit in Nevada: Great Basin National Park

Nevada shares a number of its bucket list destinations you must visit the sooner the possible with other states. Although Great Basin National Park lies entirely within the Silver State, neighboring Utah with its fair share of astounding attractions is just a stone’s throw away.

Therefore, a gradual change of scenery prevails here. The seemingly endless desert wilderness slowly recedes, replaced by lusher greenery and different landscapes. While the Great Basin Desert still occupies a good portion of the park, towering peaks of the South Snake Range slowly take over.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Built during the Great Depression as a way to provide jobs, Hoover Dam is a marvel of modern engineering. The 726-foot-high dam contains Lake Mead , the largest reservoir in the United States, and provides hydroelectric power to much of Nevada, Arizona, and California.

Built on the Nevada and Arizona state line, the dam is just a 45-minute drive from the center of Las Vegas, or a short helicopter flight. You can walk out onto the dam for vertigo inducing views over the edge, or look out over Lake Mead. Three different tours of the Hoover Dam Power Plant are available; note that some tours can only be purchased at the dam itself.

The sparkling blue water of Lake Tahoe, surrounded by often snow-capped mountains, is one of the most beautiful sites in Nevada. This 22-mile-long freshwater lake, high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the Nevada and California border, is a popular year-round destination.

Valley of Fire State Park is one of the most striking natural areas in the state. Dramatic rock formations and sweeping vistas of colorful stone waves create some of Nevada's most dynamic landscapes. Just an hour's drive northeast of Las Vegas, it's worth making the trip out here.

If you are only interested in a scenic drive, roads through the park provide stunning views of the landscape. However, one of the best ways to experience the park is from the hiking trails . These hikes are generally short and easy, but take you through some incredible scenery, including slot canyons, rock walls covered in petroglyphs, old filming locations, and other spectacular sites. You're also likely to spot some wildlife.

Located just outside of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is one Nevada's most popular hiking areas. The massive red rock formations jutting high above the Mojave Desert are the most striking feature, but the area covers a diverse range of sites and geological formations. Box canyons, mountains, and a look at the Keystone Thrust are some of the highlights.

A 13-mile scenic drive through the park offers a look at some of the sites, but hiking trails in Red Rock Canyon offer the best access to all of the major sites. Rock climbing, road biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, and wildlife viewing are also popular activities here.

The conservation area has one developed campground with primitive facilities.

Reno is the second-largest city in Nevada after Las Vegas in terms of population, but is still relatively small and home to only approximately 250,000 residents. However, for a small city, it has a surprising number of impressive attractions and events for tourists .

Reno hosts the annual National Championship Air Races, The Great Reno Balloon Race, and the Hot August Nights car convention, along with a number of other popular annual celebrations. Reno is also home to the National Automobile Museum and several other interesting museums.

This pop-up city in the desert is a community-based, annual event held in the Black Rock Desert , about three hours north of Reno. This unique event focuses on art and self-expression in many forms, and attendees are expected to be involved rather than merely spectators. The people and the atmosphere of sharing and community are what make the experience.

Held in late August and early September, Burning Man began in 1986 and has grown considerably over the years. Today, tens of thousands of people attend. Attendance levels are capped each year, and tickets sell out.

Lamoille Canyon lies at the heart of Nevada's Ruby Mountains in Elko Country. The Lamoille Canyon Road is an officially designated National Forest Road that winds around the base of the 11,387-foot Ruby Dome.

The road climbs up into a spectacular 8,800-foot-high canyon that was carved long ago by glaciers. During the summer, the alpine meadows explode with wildflowers. The lower region of Lamoille Canyon is open year-round, but the upper section is buried under snow for several months in the winter. Popular things to do here, apart from the scenic drive, include camping, fishing, hiking, and in the winter, heli-skiing.

Like its neighbor to the west, California, Nevada is one of the few places where you can downhill ski in the morning and sit by the pool in the afternoon. Perhaps the easiest place to give this a try is in Las Vegas.

In less than one hour, you can transition from the warm, dry desert floor to a winter wonderland up on 11,916-foot-high Mount Charleston at the Lee Canyon Ski Resort. Here, you'll find a fun and funky resort with 26 runs and three lifts. This resort gets an astounding 11 feet of snow per year and is a great spot to try skiing in Nevada .

However, Mount Charleston isn't all about snow. In the summer, it's a delightful escape from the heat of the valley floor below. Up here, among the tall pine trees, you'll find pleasant hiking trails, waterfalls, and the wonderful McWilliams campground.

Nevada is a place where people with big dreams have come over the past centuries to make their fortunes. The state is dotted with abandoned mines, deserted ranches, and even a few ghost towns. One of the best-preserved is Rhoylite, located near Beatty and the California border, about 120 miles from Las Vegas.

The remains of a once-prospering town are laid bare for all to see. Structures dating from the turn of the 20th century are slowly being reclaimed by the harsh Nevada climate. You can go right up to most of the structures and take a look around—some of the most interesting ones are the ruins of the Cook Bank building, the railway station, and the bottle house.

This ghost town has been used as the backdrop for many movies, one of the most recent and well-known is The Island starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson.

The ghost town isn't all about ruins—nearby is the Goldwell Open Air Museum featuring 12 life-sized sculptures depicting a religious scene among many other unusual pieces.

The 43 Best Things to Do in Nevada

Three years ago, I met a boy, moved to Nevada, and fell in love with the Battleborn State. I’ve crossed Nevada six times, finding so much more than I ever expected — having previously only pictured the desert or Las Vegas when imagining what it was like.

Believe it or not, Nevada is more mountainous than any other state in the lower 48, has more ghost towns than live towns, and is home to some of the funkiest art around. As a lover of the weird and beautiful, I’m smitten.

Trust me when I say you can spend years here and barely scratch the surface — but it’s worth a try, right? These are 43 awesome things to do in Nevada, beginning from north to south:

43. Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park

I’m convinced, Lake Tahoe must be the most beautiful, clearest lake in the world. While that is subjective, what’s undeniable is this is the largest alpine lake in North America, stretching more than 20 miles from tip to tip and straddling two states. I’m particular to the Nevada side for its amazing hiking and beaches. One of the most popular beaches in the state park is Sand Harbor, thanks to its Caribbean blues, though there are many areas to enjoy all along the shore of the lake.

Here are my favorite things to do in Lake Tahoe in the spring , summer and winter .

42. Mount Rose Wilderness

Mount Rose is one of the most newly designated wilderness areas and the closest part of the Tahoe region to Reno. I love hiking Mount Rose itself for incredible views of both the lake and the city, but it’s enjoyable at any time of year with sledding during the winter and hiking and mountain biking options in the summer on the Tahoe Rim Trail, among others in the area.

41. Tahoe Skiing

Tahoe is obviously famous for the lake, but it also offers some of the best skiing in the world. Three ski resorts are located on the Nevada side: Diamond Peak, Heavenly (which straddles the California border, so you can ski in two states!), and Mount Rose. If you’re not a skiing type, you can also take a scenic gondola ride or in my case, go snowshoeing.

40. Stateline

Want to gamble while near Lake Tahoe? Or just see where the action is? Stateline, which is on the border of California and Nevada, has regular concerts and offers plenty of restaurants, casinos, and accommodations . Many who visit Tahoe decide to base themselves here.

39. Reno’s Truckee River Walk

Running through downtown Reno, the Truckee River Walk is a lovely way to pass the afternoon, checking out art of Burning Mans past that the city buys and puts on display. You can find them all here . If it’s a hot summer day, you’ll see locals cooling off in the river; on cooler days, enjoy a leisurely stroll while dipping in and out of restaurants, cafés, and maybe a casino or two.

38. National Automobile Museum

Reno’s National Automobile Museum is a perfect indoor activity for car enthusiasts. It features 175 of William F. Harrah’s 1,450-automobile collection, plus 60 or so vehicles from other private donors, along with limited collections on display from time to time. 37. Downtown Reno’s Casinos

Wanna try your luck? Downtown Reno’s full of casinos to choose from. Dip into the Sands, Silver Legacy, El Dorado, and more. My favorite restaurants include the Crafted Palette for sandwiches, Nom Eats for vegan comfort food, and Thali for vegetarian, farm-to-table Indian food.

It’s worth mentioning that though it’s where many tourists go, downtown is by far my least favorite part of Reno. The nicest casinos — The Peppermill and Grand Sierra — are away from downtown, and if you’re looking for great restaurants and a funky vibe, I recommend Midtown (see below).

36. Reno’s Midtown

Full of cute homes, some of the best farm-to-table food in town, great shopping, speakeasies, and art, Midtown is one of the best parts of Reno. Some favorites of mine include Junkee for vintage shopping (including some great Burning Man finds!), and Arario , GreatFull Gardens , and Washoe Public House for food. You’ll also find murals all around.

35. Virginia City’s Blast of the Past

Just outside of Reno, Virginia City offers an opportunity to party like it’s 1859 in a historic mining town home to the richest silver discovery on the planet (still). These days you’ll find lots of shops with trinkets, old saloons, opportunities to dress up and take vintage, Western-style photos, and walking tours.

To give my honest review, it’s not that amazing unless there’s an event — of which there are many ridiculous ones, like the outhouse races or Redrun zombie race. Find more here .

34. Wild Horses in the Carson Valley

Did you know that an estimated half of the wild horses in the US live in Nevada? A large concentration of those are in the Carson Valley, which provides perfect opportunities for viewing. The best way to see them is to bring a long lens or binoculars, and book a tour .

33. Burning Man

How can one describe Burning Man ? It’s a collaboration of creative people who all get together for a week in the dusty desert to be completely self-reliant and to fully express themselves. I love it so much that I have been nine times. That said, tickets are notoriously hard to get, and you truly do have to be completely self-reliant: bringing your own food, water, shelter, and just about everything (other than the toilets, which are provided). But for those who are willing to invest the time and money, this is not your average festival — it’s a true experience!

32. Ruby Mountains

I’ll be honest, there’s not much between Reno and Utah on the I-80, except for one crown jewel, or Ruby, as it were.

The Ruby Mountains are a hiking, backpacking, ice climbing, and camping area near Elko. They get their name from the leaf display in the fall. I visited in the summer, and loved the lakes and beautiful peaks, along with the uncrowded trails and wilderness areas.

31. The Loneliest Road in America

Highway 50, aka “ the Loneliest Road in America ,” is the route from Great Basin back to Reno, straight through the middle of Nevada. It may seem like there’s nothing to see, but I actually love this drive. You’re unlikely to come across many other vehicles, and there are tiny towns, hot springs, and reservoirs all along the way, plus Garnett Hill for rock hounds. After a summer monsoon, it was particularly green and beautiful, so if you find yourself needing to drive this road, know that there’s something to see along the way. The following few on this list are all off this road.

30. Great Basin’s Bristlecone Pine

Great Basin is one of the least-visited national parks in the US, and the only one in Nevada. There’s much to love, including the hike to the Bristlecone Pines — the oldest living organisms on Earth, with some reaching nearly 5,000 years in age. Thanks to their adaptability in particularly harsh environments, they’ve outlasted most major recent empires and even predate most modern religions. If you’re keen, I recommend hanging out after dark to see them with the stars, which are incredible out there.

29. The Lehman Caves

The longest in the state, the Lehman Caves of Great Basin National Park feature marble stalactites, stalagmites, popcorn, and cave bacon. Though they were closed when I was visiting, ranger-led tours (the only way to see the cave) are generally offered via the NPS website and cost $12 per adult.

28. Wheeler Peak, Nevada’s Second Tallest

If you’ve heard of many Wheeler Peaks, it’s thanks to a man who was fond of naming them after himself. This Wheeler Peak is the second highest mountain in Nevada at 13,065 feet, or just under 4,000 meters.

The kicker is that the hike includes a gain of 3,000 feet over just three miles, making it almost entirely uphill and at altitude. It can also get quite windy, but the views are worth it if you’re driven enough to make it to the top!

27. Star Train

While in Ely, check out the Great Basin Stars & Champagne Train on the Nevada Northern Railway. It’s a chance to have ranger-led journey on the historic line to a platform with telescopes for stargazing. Be sure to book this during a new moon, as a full or even partial moon can seriously inhibit viewing. Though it’s in the middle of nowhere, this is a popular activity, booking up to a year in advance. Get a spot here !

26. Ward Charcoal Ovens

On your way out from Great Basin, near Ely, consider making a pit stop at the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park. You’ll find beehive-like ovens from the 19th century among 700 acres of protected land. Also, the stargazing out there is unreal!

25. The Most Haunted Hotel in America

The next several stops are off the 95 freeway connecting Reno and Las Vegas, beginning with the self-proclaimed “most haunted’ hotel in America.” The Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah retains its early-1900s charm in the decor, old slot machines, and themed rooms. Pictured here is the Lady in Red room, which we just had to stay in, as it is supposed to be the most haunted room in the hotel. It belonged to a lady of the night who was murdered in this room. Other ghosts include a pair of children, a soldier, and random sightings by guests. I have not personally had any encounters at this hotel, but I loved that the manager was willing to take me on a little tour to tell me the stories and history. Read more here .

24. Clown Motel and Historic Graveyard

If you’re in Tonopah anyway, why not stop by the Clown Motel and adjacent graveyard? The motel is what you think it would be: a lobby brimming with clowns of all sizes and levels of creepiness. It’s free to go inside to take photos, and there are some giant clowns outside as well. I didn’t stay there, but reviewers seem disappointed that the rooms are not as well-themed.

The graveyard is full of mostly wooden graves largely from the early 1900s, when the town experienced its mining boom.

23. Tonopah Dunes

I wouldn’t necessarily go out of your way to see the dunes, and you will want a four-wheel-drive vehicle if you do, but if you happen to be passing by, they and the adjacent solar field lovely sights at sunset; in the winter, they sometimes have one side covered in snow. I’ve free camped out there as well in the past, since it’s public land about halfway between Reno and Las Vegas.

22. Goldfield

What was once the largest town in Nevada during its gold boom is now one of the smallest, but that doesn’t mean you should drive on past it. Much of what you can find nestled in Goldfield is what earned the 95 freeway its moniker, “the free-range art highway.” It’s full of Joshua trees (yep, you can see plenty outside of Joshua Tree National Park !), quirky art that has inspired Burning Man art cars, and a lovely place called the Stop and Stop Inn to spend the night.

21. International Car Forest of the Last Church

Imagine the weird and wonderful sight of spray-painted cars and buses nose-down in the high desert landscape, surrounded by Joshua trees, a smattering of snow (in the winter months) and dazzling stars overhead. For lovers of “WTF?” art like myself, it’s a delightful pit stop. If you didn’t know it was there, you might pass right on by, and that would be a shame. The car forest in Goldfield was created by Mark Rippie, Chad Sorg, and Zak Sargent and these days is maintained by local artists after the trio had a falling out. There’s no fee to enter and nobody is around patrolling, but please respect the art and don’t add your own spray paint or climb the exhibit.

20. Rhyolite Ghost Town

Rhyolite is a ghost town on the Nevada side just before the entrance to Death Valley National Park . What was once a gold-rush center at its peak in 1905, with several thousand residents, became a ghost town almost as quickly when the mining boom reached its end. Unfortunately, since we can’t have nice things, these days, fencing has been put up around all of the structures to protect them from spray-paint and otherwise irresponsible visitors. This ruined the experience for me, though it’s an easy pit stop if you happen to be in the area en route to Death Valley anyway.

19. Goldwell Open Air Museum

Just next to Rhyolite, the Goldwell Open Air Museum was more exciting to me than the ghost town, as the art is still open to interact with. The most famous work here is the ghostly “Last Supper,” created in the ’80s by Polish-Belgian artist Albert Szukalski. You’ll also find a rock circle, a Lego-ish sculpture of Venus, and more. It’s well worth the five-minute detour on your way to Death Valley if you find yourself in Beatty.

18. Area 51 Alien Center

The alien lore of Area 51 is well known, but what happens in the government-controlled zone itself is still under lock and key. Though you can’t get into Area 51 itself, you can drive by the tourist trap Alien Center on the 95 on your way to Las Vegas. Though it’s cheesy — what more could we expect? — the Alien Center features a gas station, restaurant, and places to take a quick photo with alien statues.

17. The Las Vegas Strip

Since I grew up close by, in Southern California, my twenties were all about frequent trips to Las Vegas with my girlfriends. What’s not to love? The casinos are beautifully decorated, there’s such a variety of food, shows, including a variety of free shows in Vegas , and activities, and of course the night clubs and the pool parties were our favorites. Las Vegas does everything bigger, with the most famous performers and the best DJs. I’ll always hold those memories dear, though these days I tend to look for other, non-party ways to enjoy it and the surrounding area.

16. Helicopter over the Las Vegas Strip

When I went on a big American Southwest road trip a few years ago, one of my best Las Vegas experiences was taking a helicopter to the rim of the Grand Canyon, which included flying back over the Strip at night. The full flight is definitely pricey, but you can opt to just fly over the Strip, which is an incredible experience in itself. I recommend opting for a dusk flight, so you can see the sunset and the casinos all lit up. Book here .

15. Neon Museum

The Neon Museum in Las Vegas is a collection of retro signs that display iconic Las Vegas history. It’s a large outdoor area, covering over 2.5 acres, and one of the best things for art lovers to do if you’re not interested in spending all your time on the Strip. Tickets start at $18; due to its popularity, it’s wise to book ahead of time, which you can do here .

14. Stratosphere Skyjump Bungee Jump

Looking to get your adrenaline going? The Stratosphere Skyjump is yet another way to get a view of Las Vegas from above, just while plummeting up to 40mph downward attached to a bungee cord!

The Skyjump holds the Guinness World Record as the highest commercial decelerator descent facility, at 829 feet above the Strip.

What does bungee jumping feel like? The best way I can describe it is that dropping feeling in your stomach with alarm bells going off before your brain can quite comprehend what’s happening. But the adrenaline rush is next level! Book here if you dare.

13. High Roller, the Largest Observation Wheel in North America

If helicopters aren’t your thing, there’s another way to soar above the Strip: on the 550-foot High Roller observation wheel. Think London Eye, but Vegas style!

The wheel takes a full 30 minutes to complete one rotation and features 28 observation rooms. Tickets range from $28 to $60 depending on time of day; they are on the higher end if you’re taking the happy hour journey. Book here .

12. Omega Mart by MeowWolf and Area 51

Looking for a break from the strip? Area 51 is full of interesting museums and costume shops, but my favorite part of it is the Omega Mart by Meow Wolf. It’s a delightfully confusing, random, extremely creative collection of “what am I looking at?,” including upcycled art and immersive stories, lights, music, and slides.

After visiting in Santa Fe , I’m a huge fan of Meow Wolf, which has locations in New Mexico and Denver as well as Las Vegas. I find it delightful how random and confusing it is. Be prepared to leave with more questions than answers. Advance tickets are recommended; get them here .

11. Venetian Gondola

Is it cheesy? Absolutely. Is it an incredible photo op? You betcha!

Inspired by the gondolas of Venice, Italy, the Venetian offers both indoor and outdoor rides for $39 (beginning at 9:30 indoors and 10:30 outdoors). You can book an additional photo package for $32. Find the ticket booth on-site.

10. Helicopter to the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is somewhat close to Las Vegas, but still a several-hour drive each way. Although pricey, the helicopter ride there includes flying over the beautiful landscape around Las Vegas, including Lake Mead, and a sunset landing with champagne on the north rim of the canyon. If you don’t have the time to drive and you’ve always wanted to see this natural wonder, this is a great way to get it done in just a few beautiful hours. Plus, you get to fly over the Las Vegas Strip! Book it here .

9. Mt. Charleston

Did you know that about an hour outside of Vegas, you can ski? Mt. Charleston is the perfect escape to see snow if you’re visiting the area during the winter months. It’s great for hiking and snowshoeing, and I even had the pleasure of attending a wedding there.

8. Red Rock Canyon

Another beautiful hiking destination outside of town, the Red Rock Canyon State Park has scenic drives and overlooks, as well as hiking and camping. The park has timed entrance, so be sure to book your time slot in advance to skip the queue, which can be quite long; timed reservations are required from October to May. This area is best avoided during the peak heat hours during the summer months.

7. Valley of Fire State Park

Apart from Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, the Valley of Fire is one of the best-known and most frequently visited state parks in Nevada. Here, about 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas, the land formations are the star of the show. Speaking of stars, there’s amazing stargazing in this park as well.

Plan on spending the majority of a day here exploring, hiking, and even camping overnight if you wish. This is another spot that’s best enjoyed in the cooler months. Check out our ultimate guide for all the can’t-miss stops.

6. Hoover Dam

I have to be honest, after stopping by and seeing it myself, I can’t quite understand what the allure is of the Hoover Dam, yet it’s consistently rated as a fan favorite for things to do outside of Las Vegas. Constructed in the Depression-era 1930s, it’s a true feat of engineering that helps provide hydropower to millions of people. I can appreciate its historical significance, but as more of a nature lover, it’s just not my cup of tea.

5. Seven Magic Mountains

The Seven Magic Mountains were meant to just be temporary, but thanks to their popularity, they become a permanent fixture in the desert on the 15 freeway just before Las Vegas. The free-range art installation, created by Michael Heizer and Jean Tinquely, is completely free and always open.

4. Lake Mead

Even though I’m not a fan of the Hoover Dam, I have it to thank for creating the Lake Mead reservoir, which is a lovely body of water in an otherwise parched environment. It’s got the largest capacity of any reservoir in the US. I visited in the winter when the water’s pretty cold, but in the summer months, it’s the perfect place to cool off. Unfortunately, its level has fallen considerably lately.

3. Nelson Ghost Town

About an hour South of Las Vegas, the ghost town of Nelson allows for a bit more interaction than Rhyolite, though since it’s privately owned, you’ve got to pay to enter. Still, it’s a photographer’s dream, with $2 tours and the option to do wedding or family photos on-site.

2. Lost City Museum in Overton

Take a trip back in time to an ancestral site with reconstructed dwellings, ancient ruins, and artifacts from the Pueblo Grande de Nevada archaeological sites. Located northeast of Las Vegas, this is for the archaeology and history buffs out there. Entry is $6.

1. Cathedral Gorge State Park

Last but far from least, Cathedral Gorge State Park has some of the most unique rock formations in the state. Formed from volcanic ash deposited under an ancient lake, what you see today are orange, layered rocks reminiscent of some of Utah’s best canyons and parks . Plus, much of the park is easy to hike; it’s only three miles to the most popular overlooks on the Miller Point and Eagle Point Trails.

This list is totally awesome. In Nevada I’ve only been to the Las Vegas area including Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston, and Valley of Fire – and also to Great Basin National Park. Would love to visit other parts of the state sometime.

I stayed in the Red Room on Halloween 2019. The room next to it is the one that is really haunted. I did see a shadow moving in that rooom and had weird dreams.

If you want to simplify things, booking a tour of Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is probably the easiest and most convenient way to visit it. Otherwise, you should start at the Visitor Center, where you can learn more about this hydroelectric dam through a series of exhibits. Then, if you want to enjoy the best views, head to Hoover Dam Bridge or one of the Hoover Dam lookouts.

From the bridge and lookouts, you’ll not only see just how large this structure really is, but also get a sense of just how impressive an engineering feat it was to build.

The property offers a whirlwind tour of the French capital's most iconic sights: You'll find a replica of the Arc de Triomphe, architecture reminiscent of the Paris Opera and the Louvre, and the pièce de résistance – a 46-story, half-size replica of the Eiffel Tower. Tickets to the tower's observation deck cost $25 for adults and $19 for kids ages 4 to 12. Similar to the real tower in Paris, the Las Vegas Eiffel Tower stages a free recurring light show every 30 minutes from sunset to midnight daily. For a unique view of the tower, reserve a lounge chair by the property’s pool, which is located on the rooftop directly under the Eiffel Tower replica.

Sitting about 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam spans the Colorado River and the Black Canyon (which separates Nevada and Arizona). The immense concrete structure – which confines Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume – has helped provide power to Nevada, Arizona and California since 1935. These days, in addition to keeping the lights on, the Hoover Dam welcomes more than 7 million visitors each year as one of America's most recognized landmarks. Visitor Center:  You can learn more about the Hoover Dam with a stop at the Visitor Center, which is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility's Exhibit Gallery features various audio, visual and interactive exhibits, such as a generator model you can walk through, while the theater shows a 10-minute film about the dam. Don't forget to head to the top-floor observation area to snap some memorable pictures of the massive structure, Lake Mead and the Colorado River, as most visitors recommend doing.

Like many of Sin City's attractions, Area15 is hard to describe. Marketed on its website as an "immersive entertainment district," the 200,000-square-foot warehouse features a psychedelic smorgasbord of unique experiences, including cinematic immersions, interactive art exhibits, virtual reality arcades, zip lines, axe-throwing and several one-of-a-kind bars and restaurants.

Area15 has earned comparisons to Burning Man and "Alice in Wonderland," thanks to the art installations that tower outside and the mind-bending exhibits inside. Two of the most popular attractions are the immersive art experience, Meow Wolf's Omega Mart, and the rum-fueled immersive Cirque show "Lost Spirits Distillery."

Back in the day, not even Vegas' neon lights could distract Americans from Sin City's darker side; today, The Mob Museum sheds light on the city's pervasiveness in the 20th-century gangster era. Las Vegas' former federal courthouse – located in the downtown area a few blocks northeast of the Fremont Street Experience  – now houses distinct interactive exhibits devoted to exposing America's mob history.

When Circa Resort & Casino held its grand opening in 2020, it was the first new casino to open in downtown Las Vegas in more than 40 years. The chic, 35-story-tall addition to this old Las Vegas neighborhood has all the modern features of a 21st-century casino, including a high-tech parking garage named the Garage Mahal and a three-story-tall sportsbook (the world's largest). But the adults-only casino also has a distinctly vintage Vegas vibe, too. Circa's interior features midcentury lighting and accents, globe chandeliers and the iconic "Vegas Vickie," a giant neon cowgirl that hovers over the casino lobby.

The most talked-about attraction among recent visitors at Circa, however, is Stadium Swim, a mashup of a concert stadium and a swimming pool amphitheater. Guests can lounge in one of six pools while they catch a sports game or concert on the 40-foot screen above. The pool is heated and remains open year-round, which makes it a popular lounge spot on desert spring days. Those wishing to visit the pool area must be a guest at the resort or pay a fee; a general admission day pass to Stadium Swim start at $25 per person. The pool is open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Downtown Container Park's premise is an interesting one: An open-air dining and shopping plaza made entirely from repurposed shipping containers. The 1.1-acre venue is also home to a sprawling treehouse and interactive play area and a 40-foot-tall praying mantis sculpture that shoots real flames from its antennae.

Part of the Fremont Street Experience , SlotZilla is modeled after a giant slot machine, complete with Las Vegas icons like oversized dice and a martini glass. At 11 stories tall, SlotZilla is billed as the world’s largest slot machine and as a zip line offers riders two options: On the lower line, Zip-Zilla, participants ride in a seated position, zipping along at 77 feet in the air. The line travels about halfway through the Fremont Street Experience. The higher zip line, known as Super-Hero Zoom, rises 114 feet high. Patrons ride “superhero-style” (with their bodies parallel to the ground) to the other end of the street and are dropped off at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino. Guests should allot one hour for the entire experience, even though the rides are 30 seconds and one minute, respectively. In addition to a weight check and harness fitting, you’ll have to go through a brief safety training.

Recent travelers found the higher “Super-Hero Zoom” zip line thrilling and enjoyed the views from up above, especially at night. However, there were mixed reviews about the check-in process, and some warned that you’ll have to climb a lot of steps to get to the top of the launching platform.

SPEEDVEGAS SPEEDVEGAS

Not all thrill-seekers are satisfied with laying their cards out on the table. When Lady Luck can't get your adrenaline pumping, an exotic driving experience sure will. Headquartered about 15 minutes south of the Strip , SPEEDVEGAS puts those feeling the need for speed behind some of the world's fastest, most luxurious cars. From exotic Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins to speedy Corvettes and Camaros, you'll have your pick of horsepower.

This experience isn't for everyone: Drivers must be at least 18 years old. The chance to sit in the driver's seat is anything but affordable, with driving experiences starting at approximately $250 for five laps. However, those who have put the pedal to the metal on a SPEEDVEGAS experience can't stop raving about it, praising the accommodating and safety-conscious staff.

If you're looking for a kid-friendly activity away from the Strip , or just need a breath of fresh air, consider a visit to the Springs Preserve and Origen Museum. There's something of interest for almost everyone at this 180-acre cultural institution, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The preserve is located at the original water source for the valley, and is commonly known as the "birthplace of Las Vegas." It's a place meant to commemorate Las Vegas' history and boasts museums, galleries, a botanical garden, a butterfly habitat and an interpretive trail system. Meanwhile, the Origen Museum features more than 75 permanent exhibits, an indoor theater and a traveling exhibit space.

Recent visitors raved about the family-friendly atmosphere here, but even those without kids in tow love the history and the botanical garden. Reviewers called the grounds “peaceful” and said Springs Preserve provides a fun day away from the Strip.

Sure, this towering gold building at the southern end of the Strip boasts all the slots, poker and game tables you want in a Sin City venue, not to mention a variety of restaurants and nightlife venues. (Plus, it's home to the House of Blues Music Hall and plays host to "Michael Jackson ONE," Cirque du Soleil 's tribute to the 80s pop icon.) But Mandalay Bay doesn't exude the same level of kitsch found at other casinos along Las Vegas Boulevard – a major selling point for more laid-back travelers. In fact, this is the place you go if you're looking for an escape, according to reviewers.

One of the major highlights of Mandalay Bay is its 11-acre “aquatic playground,” which features a human-made beach, a lazy river and a wave pool that creates an oceanside atmosphere in the middle of the Nevada desert. You can kick off your shoes and work on your tan in one of the rentable cabanas or gazebos; those looking to avoid bikini tan lines can ditch the top at the Moorea Beach Club. Note that unless you're a guest at the Mandalay Bay or the Delano Las Vegas, you will have to rent a cabana to access the pool and beach areas – prices vary by day and occupancy levels.

As you make your way down the Strip , you can't miss the 30-story pyramid that is home to the Luxor Hotel & Casino. You can try your luck at more than 1,100 slot, video poker and multi-game machines, or play one of dozens of table games on the 120,000-square-foot floor. There's also a large sportsbook area, with plasma TVs and individual seats with monitors. If you're a high roller, there's a private section for you, too, with a comfortable lounge and cocktail bar.

In addition to the gaming floor, the casino also offers a variety of nightly entertainment options and attractions like the Blue Man Group, as well as several museum exhibits, such as one devoted to Titanic artifacts. For many travelers, “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” was a highlight of their visit to Luxor. In addition to featuring more than 250 artifacts recovered from the ship, the exhibition displays recreated rooms, including the ornate Grand Staircase. What's more, Luxor touts one of the largest pool decks in Vegas, offering 125,650 square feet of space. As with other hotels on the Strip, Luxor also offers a variety of nightlife venues and restaurants.

It only makes sense that a city devoted to entertainment would feature a casino hotel devoted to the entertainment industry. MGM Grand Casino – which sits mid-Strip across from New York-New York at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue – hosts a variety of performances ranging from big-name concerts to sporting events to Cirque du Soleil 's "KÀ." It is also the partner to the nearby T-Mobile Arena, which hosts large-scale events, such as the iHeartRadio Music Festival.

The MGM Grand is also home to several top-notch restaurants and nightlife venues, such as Hakkasan nightclub, where celebrity DJs regularly spin hits into the wee hours. During the day, you can stop by Wet Republic Ultra Pool, where you can dance, swim or relax in party cabanas. Several shops can be found here as well, but you'll likely spend most of your time (and your money) on the casino floor, which houses poker tables, slot machines and a race and sports book. Keep in mind: The property spans more than 6 acres, so you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking during your visit (comfortable shoes are a must). Travelers were impressed by the size of the MGM Grand Casino, but said the nightlife options are the real star of the property.

Located on the Strip , the 5-acre Adventuredome at Circus Circus Hotel and Casino offers rides and entertainment for all ages. There are 25 rides and attractions, including roller coasters, an 18-hole miniature golf course, a carousel, a video game arcade and a rock clubbing wall, all housed under a large glass dome. The complex also includes free clown shows, virtual reality rooms and the FX Theater, which screens family-friendly films in 4D.

Recent visitors appreciated the climate-controlled indoor environment, but warn that the Adventuredome is better suited to younger children (ages 12 and younger) than adults due to the nature of its rides and attractions.
