Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

Visit ancient temples and walk history-laden pilgrim routes on a 8 day Koya-san & Kumano Trek.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
  • Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
  • Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
  • Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
  • Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Do I need a visa to travel to Japan?

Under current restrictions, a visa is required to enter Japan as a tourist. We recommend you apply for your visa no later than one month before your departure date. Please contact your local consulate or embassy for more information.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell while in Japan?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu
  • 'please' - Onegaishimasu

What religions do they practice in Japan?

There are two dominant religions in Japan - Shinto and Buddhism. The majority of Japanese people practice both simultaneously, however, there is a small number of the population that practise other religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam.

"Japan is one of the most captivating places on earth, where you can go from Tokyo's flashy streets to the snowy peak of Mount Fuji or a traditional ryokan in a day."

Travel Director

Admire the snow-capped Mount Fuji

See the towering peak of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan and a UNESCO-listed site. We’ll take you up to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, a spectacular vantage point at 7,545 feet, before taking a ride on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway with views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto

Board the high-speed bullet train to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan and the ancient epicentre of Japanese culture. After whizzing through the country, you’ll meet the locals at a traditional ryokan and learn about traditional Japanese customs, then explore the Gion District and glittering Kinkakuji Temple, the symbol of Kyoto.

Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony

We’ll introduce you to a professional Tea Master who has spent many years learning the craft of the tea ceremony. You’ll learn about the history of Japanese tea making, and watch how the matcha is prepared with a bamboo whisk. You’ll even have a go at making (and tasting) your own tea.

Admire Osaka from the Floating Garden Observatory

The Floating Garden Observatory is an open-air viewing platform, stretching between the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building. We’ll take you to the top of the 567-foot buildings for panoramic views over Osaka, including the city’s dazzling rivers, bridges and soaring skyscrapers.

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

With nearly 200 shops selling everything from fresh fish and spices to clothing and bags, you can spend hours roaming through Ameyoko Street Market. Located in Tokyo along the Yamanote Line tracks, it was once a black market selling American goods and sweets after WWII, when sugar was hard to find.

Our top 5 things to do in Japan

Our Japan tours take you from the dizzying heights of Mount Fuji and the bustle of the Ameyoko Market, to the tranquility of a Japanese tea ceremony.

Tokyo National Museum

The largest and oldest museum in Japan, Tokyo National Museum holds one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological artefacts from Asia. There are over 110,000 items, including 87 National Treasures of Japan, and you can find everything from art along the Silk Road to medieval Japanese art.

Kotokuin Temple

Located in the city of Kamakuru, the Kotokuin Temple is a Japanese Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect. It’s home to the ‘Great Buddha’ or ‘Daibutsu’, a 37-foot bronze statue of Amida Buddha, constructed in 1252. The towering statue is a National Treasure and one of the most iconic sights in Japan.

Sensoji Buddhist Temple

One of the most famous temples in Japan, the Sensoji Buddhist Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It was originally built in 628 but was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. Today, you’ll find a beautiful five-storey pagoda, woven with incense and crimson eaves.

Best museums in Japan

A Japan tour package with Trafalgar takes you through the country’s top museums, from one of the world’s best collections of Asian art, to the ornate temples of Tokyo.

Although sushi is now a popular dish around the world, you’ve never really tried it until you’ve eaten the best in Japan. Our Local Specialists will help you navigate the endless varieties of this iconic dish, from raw vegetables to fresh fish wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Hida beef comes from a Japanese breed of black-haired cattle raised in the fresh air and pure water of Gifu Prefecture. Hailed as the best beef in Japan, we’ll take you to the top restaurants to try one of the beautifully tender and marbled Hida beef steaks.

A beloved dish found all over the country, ramen is a delicious Japanese noodle soup. Each region has a different variation and it usually involves a tasty pork or chicken broth, seasoned with plenty of rich flavors like miso, soy sauce and spring onions.

Best food in Japan

A Japan group tour with Trafalgar will have you indulging in the country’s fantastic cuisine, from fresh sushi to piping hot ramen.

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Versatile clothing

Japan’s weather ranges hot and humid to freezing cold, with mild springs in between. Pack versatile layers to be prepared for all conditions on your Japan holiday.

Land of the Rising Sun

Welcome to Japan! This is a land of intriguing contradictions. Japan is an archipelago made up of more than 6,800 islands with three quarters of the land being either forest or mountains, leaving little for residential, industrial, or farming areas. Yet it is densely populated for its size. Its leaders have ranged from the samurai to the shogun to the emperor. Its highest point – Mt. Fuji – is beautiful and sacred, as are its many temples and shrines. Its capital city – Tokyo – is a bustling metropolis containing anything one might desire, from food to entertainment to art and culture. Kyoto is filled with serene religious buildings and glorious gardens. A Japan trip awaits with open arms!

Destination must-see's.

Japan ms1

Until the 19th century, Tokyo was known as Edo. It started out as a fishing village but grew to become the seat of a feudal government in the early 17th century. Emperor Meiji moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo in 1868 and renamed it Tokyo, or “Eastern Capital.” By then it had become one of the world’s most populous cities. After World War II it was completely rebuilt. Today, Tokyo is more than just a large city – it is a metropolis with 23 wards. Learn all about the city’s fascinating history and culture through artwork and antiques in Tokyo’s National Museum. Travelers dive even deeper into Tokyo’s ancient roots with a visit to the Zojoji Temple, the center of Japanese Buddhism. From the Ginza district to the Sumida River there’s something for everyone in Tokyo.

Japan ms2

Kyoto was home to the emperor from 794 to 1868. It was Japan’s political and cultural center for 1,100 years, until the capital was moved to Tokyo. Kyoto was largely spared from damaging air raids of World War II and numerous temples, shrines, castles, and palaces are still standing today. Among them is the Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple whose top two stories are completely covered in gold leaf. Once the lavish retirement home of a shogun (military dictator), it was converted to a Zen temple in the 1400s. It has survived wars, been rebuilt after fires, and still stands as an impressive piece of historic architecture. Nijo Castle, another impressive monument, was built in 1603 as the residence of Tokugawa leyasu – the first shogun of the Edo Period. Kyoto is also well-known for Gion – its most famous Geisha district where you may be lucky enough to see a woman dressed in full, traditional geisha regalia.

Japan ms3

Hiroshima will forever be remembered for the devastating event of August 6, 1945: the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Nearly everything within a mile of where the bomb fell was destroyed, and some 80,000 people perished. There were predictions that the city would no longer be habitable. Today, Hiroshima has been rebuilt and a large park was constructed, containing several memorials to the victims. The Peace Memorial Museum focuses on the dropping of the bomb and its aftermath; the Atomic Bomb Dome was one of the few buildings to remain standing afterward; and the Memorial Cenotaph is an arched tomb for those who died. Also worth a visit is Hiroshima Castle. Originally built in 1589, it was five stories tall and was surrounded by a moat. It was destroyed in 1945, rebuilt in 1958, and is now a museum featuring Samurai culture.

Japan ms4

Takayama means “tall mountain,” and is a city in the mountainous Hida region. During the feudal ages, it became known for its high-quality timber and skilled carpenters. Yet it was kept fairly isolated due to the surrounding mountains. Today it is known for its well-preserved old town. The Hida-Kokubunji Temple is the oldest structure, originally built in 746. It features a huge ginko tree, said to be 1,200 years old, and a three-storied pagoda. The Hida no Sato Folk Village, with its traditional wooden farm houses, is an open-air museum. There are also two morning markets, or Asaichi, held on a daily basis, as well as sake breweries. It is the perfect place for a walk.

Destination Must-Do's

Japan md1

Japanese Cuisine:

No trip to Japan would be complete without experiencing its flavorful dishes. A bowl of gohan, or cooked rice, is a central part of Japanese meals. From there we go to sushi, famous both outside of and inside Japan. Sushi is made from cold boiled rice, moistened by vinegar and typically combined with seafood and vegetables. Sashimi is thinly sliced raw food – most often seafood. (Japan is an island, after all.) The most popular noodles are soba (buckwheat flour), udon (wheat flour), and ramen, a noodle soup dish. Tempura is lightly battered, deep-fried seafood and vegetables. Yakatori refers to grilled chicken skewers you can try at a yakitori-ya. Be sure to enjoy green tea with your meal, as the Japanese do.

Japan md2

The Tokyo Skytree:

The Tokyo Skytree is the perfect way to get a panoramic view of the city and beyond. A television broadcasting tower, this Tokyo landmark is almost 1,200 feet high and is the tallest structure in Japan. A large shopping complex and an aquarium are at its base, but it’s the two observation decks that warrant a visit. Head to the “world’s highest skywalk” for views that will take your breath away!

Japan md3

Temples and Shrines:

Temples and shrines are found all over Japan, with most municipalities having at least one temple. (Kyoto has 1,200.) Temples are Buddhist places of worship, and they store and display sacred objects. They typically consist of a main hall, a lecture hall, a pagoda, gates, bells, and a cemetery. Some were monasteries in the past, and some still are. Shrines are Shinto places of worship. They are the dwellings of the kami, or Shinto gods. Sacred objects are stored in the innermost chamber, and are not to be seen by anyone. People visit shrines to pay respect to the kami, or to pray for good fortune. The approach to the shrine is marked by Torii gates; the komainu, a pair of guardian dogs or lions, is found on each side of the shrine’s entrance.

Japan md4

Hakone has been a hot springs resort for centuries. There are more than a dozen hot springs, with Yumoto being the most famous. There is much natural beauty to be appreciated here. Lake Ashinoko, or Lake Ashi, was formed in a volcanic caldera after an eruption 3,000 years ago; it is the perfect place for a scenic boat ride with views of Mt. Fuji. The Hakone Shrine, on the shores of Lake Ashi, is Hakone’s most famous Shinto shrine. Three striking Torii gates mark the approach to the shrine. Odawaro Castle is the closest castle to Tokyo, some 60 miles away. Originally built in the 15th century, it has been rebuilt twice since then. Hakone remains a popular destination for the Japanese and tourists alike.

What travelers are saying about our Japan tours

Travel tips for japan trips.

If cherry blossoms as far as the eye can see spark your wanderlust, then spring is the ideal time to go on Japan guided tours. Cherry blossom season varies by location, but for Tokyo and Kyoto, the blooms pop up in late March or early April. Cherry trees peak just one week after the blossoms begin to open, so set off on our Cherry Blossoms in Japan: Tokyo to Kyoto tour in March to see the best of the best. Just keep in mind that you may need to contend with higher crowds of people hoping to admire this beautiful springtime sight on tours to Japan.

April and May are also pleasant times to go on escorted tours of Japan. June and July mark the height of Japan's rainy season, but are also the time when Japan gets the fewest visitors. So, if you're not a fan of crowds and don't mind a bit of rain and humidity, the summer season can be an enjoyable time to see the country. It's also around this time that the country's music festivals and beer gardens start to open.

Japan trips departing September through November also have so much to offer. Although the season can come with a little rain, it brings colorful autumnal leaves that can be considered on par with the famous cherry blossoms. Plus, the fall's mild temperatures are ideal for exploring. Just keep in mind that visiting Japan in the fall also means you'll experience a higher amount of visitors.

Our Japan guided tours bring you from the city to the countryside to give you a true sense of this dynamic island. See soaring skyscrapers and unmatched views of Mount Fuji in Tokyo, and step inside shrines built by powerful emperors in Kyoto. In Osaka , learn about one of Japan's most important traditions: the tea ceremony.

Want to get outside on group trips to Japan? There are endless opportunities to enjoy nature. In Nara Park, you'll stroll alongside thousands of sacred deer. Or, admire stunning works of art at the Hakone Open-Air Museum in Hakone, which boats 17 acres of sculptures. If the ocean calls, add the Okinawa extension on our ** Grand Tour of Japan **to relax on white-sand beaches. Beyond these beautiful sites are the Japanese Alps, the Bamboo Grove of Arashiyama, and more.

Out of all our Asia tours , Japan group tour packages are sure to introduce you to some of the continent's most delicious cuisine. Common Japanese meals are based around rice or noodles with fish, meat, and vegetables flavored with soy sauce and miso. Here are some of the can't-miss specialties to seek out on all Japan trips:

  • Sushi, a go-to meal of seasoned rice and raw fish that's popular for locals and visitors alike
  • Ramen, a broth-and-noodle dish that was invented in Japan and can be tasted at countless ramen shops throughout the country
  • Miso soup, an important part of any Japanese meal that's made with miso paste and dashi broth
  • Deep-fried seafood or vegetables called tempura
  • Shabu-shabu , or hot pot, which entails cooking meat and vegetables in a boiling broth right at the table
  • Mochi , a sweet rice dough
  • Sake , Japan's signature alcoholic drink that's been brewed in the country for centuries
  • Matcha , a finely ground powder made from green tea leaves
  • A popular street food called takoyaki , which are fried balls of dough with a small piece of octopus inside

Knowing what to pack is an important step in planning a trip to Japan. Since the temperature can shift depending on where you are, it's always a good idea to pack layers. More modest clothing that covers shoulders and legs is appreciated and often expected in temples and other religious sites. Plus, a small umbrella can come in handy in the event of an unexpected rain shower.

Good news: There's no need to stress about outlets if you're thinking about Japan tour packages! Two-pronged Type A plugs that are used in the U.S. and Canada fit into Japanese outlets. However, packing a universal adapter can be helpful if you have any three-pronged plugs, such as a computer charger.

Comfortable shoes are a must for sightseeing on Japan guided tours, and shoes that are easy to slip on and off come in handy when visiting temples and other sites when you're required to be barefoot.

Japan Experience

Frequently Asked Questions

What departure times are available for Japan tours?

Japan Experience does not provide air tickets for tours. Departures are therefore flexible, and you can leave from wherever you prefer: Paris, Brussels or elsewhere. On a self-guided tour, you can choose the departure date that suits you best to discover the wonders of Japan. In the case of a small group tour, departure dates are fixed, so those interested are asked to arrange their own flights to arrive on the tour departure date.

How many nights are included in a Japan tour?

Our Japan tours vary in length, generally comprising between 7 and 21 nights.

What are Japan's must-see destinations?

Each tour combines must-see stops with lesser-known destinations to offer a unique discovery experience. Highlights include cosmopolitan cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, historic sites such as Hiroshima, and timelessly elegant regions and cities such as Kyoto and Nara.

Here's a description of some key cities:

  • Tokyo is the contemporary city par excellence, with its impressive skyscrapers and frenetic pace. This Japanese metropolis offers a unique urban experience, harmoniously blending ancestral traditions with futuristic innovations.
  • Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, is a timeless destination that charms visitors with its rich cultural and historical heritage. Its majestic temples, Zen gardens and traditional districts bear witness to the beauty and elegance of the imperial era.
  • Osaka is a dynamic, cosmopolitan city, renowned for its delicious cuisine. Nights here are particularly lively. Its historic castle and ultramodern aquarium are must-see attractions for visitors.
  • Okinawa, a tropical archipelago in southern Japan, offers heavenly beaches and a unique culture influenced by its proximity to China and the Philippines. Lovers of scuba diving and snorkeling will find exceptional seabeds here.
  • Nara, Japan's first permanent capital, is famous for its deer park and thousand-year-old temples, including Tōdai-ji, home to a gigantic bronze Buddha. The city offers a journey back in time to Nara, the cradle of Japanese culture.
  • Hiroshima, a symbol of peace and resilience, is a moving destination where the Peace Memorial recalls the horrors of the atomic bomb. Nearby, the island of Miyajima enchants visitors with its Itsukushima Shrine and its famous torii floating on the waters of the Seto Inland Sea.

How do you immerse yourself in Japanese culture on a Japan tour?

Our Japan tours are designed to offer total immersion in Japanese culture. Travelers will discover the traditional architecture, Zen gardens, temples and shrines that dot the Land of the Rising Sun. They'll also have the chance to sample must-try Japanese culinary specialties during typical lunches, and explore the creative art scene of this multi-faceted country.

Are there routes to the mountains? To the beach? Visit islands?

Yes, some of our tours include visits to iconic mountains such as Mount Fuji, Mount Koya and the Japanese Alps. You can also explore the country's islands, such as Miyajima Island, famous for its floating torii, or Shikoku Island, rich in temples and breathtaking natural landscapes. The island of Naoshima, meanwhile, is home to the famous pumpkin of the creative Yayoi Kusama, an iconic contemporary Japanese artist.

How do I book a tour?

It's very simple and easy, just book directly online through our website: (1) Choose the tour of your choice, your departure date and indicate the number of participants. Several options are available to you. (2) Pay a deposit of 35% of the total amount* online and confirm your reservation. (3) You will then receive an e-mail confirming the conditions of your registration. (4) Book your flight ticket, either with Japan Experience or by yourself (taking into account the necessary schedules for your tour) (5) One month before departure, settle the balance of your booking. For more information on the tours or to make a reservation, please contact our advisors on +33 (0)1 42 61 60 83 or at [email protected] , or come and visit us at our agency in Paris. * travel insurance and options included

When to go to Japan?

There are 4 seasons in Japan.

Spring , from the end of February to the end of May, is a mild season suitable for all kinds of activities. It is of course the period when sakura (cherry trees) bloom, the perfect occasion to admire them (hanami). Their blooming period is between March 20 and April 10 for Tokyo and Kyoto areas, while it is possible to admire them earlier in the south of the country and later in the north. The cherry blossom period is very popular and generates a lot of crowds. However, there are other beautiful flowers that bloom during this season: plum blossoms, with their sparkling pink at the end of February; fabulous azaleas in April-May; hydrangeas of all colors or irises during June.

Summer , from June to August, is generally synonymous with heat with a rainy season in the last two weeks of June during which you can expect rain several days a week. During this very hot and humid season, it is possible to enjoy fireworks (hanabi) in July and August, as well as matsuri , traditional Japanese festivals. Among the most famous are the Gion matsuri, which is held in Kyoto in mid-July or the Obon Matsuri in mid-August.

Then comes the high wind season (taifu) , which reaches its peak between August and September, but it is not necessary to avoid going during this period. Indeed, there is little chance that they will involve changing your travel plans, few of them even reaching the main island.

Autumn , from September to November, is the season when temperatures are generally the most pleasant, quite similar to the continental European climate. It is also the season when the country is decorated with red tones and when one can admire the momiji (literally red leaves) which are usually visible in Tokyo, Kyoto and their region during the last two weeks of November.

Finally, winter, from December to February, is the coldest season but also the opportunity to admire the striking beauty of winter landscapes . December is a period of calm before the holiday season, while January is marked by a drop in temperature and the presence of a number of festivals. In central Japan, temperatures usually range from -4 to 10°C. In the mountains and the north of the country, temperatures drop significantly, while in Kyushu and Okinawa, winter tends to be milder.

The most touristic periods are :  - in February, the 10 days around the Chinese New Year, which marks a strong influx of tourists from all over Asia; - between the end of March and the beginning of April, the cherry blossom period; - between the end of April and the beginning of May, during the "Golden Week", a period with many public holidays and during which many Japanese go on vacation; - mid-August, during the Obon Matsuri; - at the end of November, the best period to observe the momiji; - early January, for the New Year, when many businesses and activities are closed.   So, if you want to go during a less crowded period, Japan Experience recommends you to go : - in February, outside the Chinese New Year period, for the cool but nevertheless pleasant weather and the splendid blooming of plum trees, before the cherry trees; - between mid-May and early June, to take advantage of the mild weather, lower traffic and the blooming of hydrangeas, azaleas and irises; - from September to early December, to take advantage of good temperatures, a reasonable level of tourism and the momiji period in late November.

Are meals included in the circuits?

It all depends on the tour you've chosen. Some include breakfast only, especially on free-ride tours, while others include all meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals may also vary according to the stage, with dinner included on certain evenings, for example a night in a ryokan in the Japanese Alps.

It follows a leisurely pace without one night stays. We also keep the groups small – up to a maximum of 16 people. Your luggage is sent by courier between each location so you can travel light. The tour finishes with a spectacular ‘farewell dinner’ where geisha will entertain you in a private performance. About two months before departure we will advise you of the confirmed tour details, including accommodation. We also offer you the chance to see traditional entertainment such as kabuki .

Talk to us about joining this or another of our Luxury Japan Tours or feel free to get in touch with any questions you have about this or any of our tours.

The Hotlist: Best of Japan in 2023

tour japon 2023

Let's face it - it's been a tough couple of years for Japan and for all of us who love it. Two whole years without international travel into the country has left many of us out of the loop, despite there being an overwhelming amount of amazing new openings and experiences. But do not be afraid! We're here to sift through the news and pick out the best parts of Tokyo, the best cities in Japan, the best hotels to retreat to and the best ways to experience Japan in the UK , when it comes to 2023.

Shimokitazawa

tour japon 2023

Shimokitazawa, or 'Shimokita' to its friends, has long been a youth culture hub due its restaurant and bar scene, vintage shops and proximity to Shibuya, but, during the pandemic, an ongoing redevelopment along the former railway line stretching across its three stations (the ‘Senrogai’), made the area much easier to use as a fun and laidback base for international visitors. The Yuen Bettei Daita  is a rare example of a high end ryokan within Tokyo's central distrcits, while the very hip illi Shimokitazawa and Mustard Hotel have, respectively, introduced  studio apartment rentals and by-the-hour room rates for a generation of digital nomads. New boutiques, cinemas, bookshops and food facilities like Bonus Track, Reload, tefu Lounge and Mikan Shimokita are simply the icing on an already very delicious cake.

tour japon 2023

The nickname given to ‘Deep Shibuya’ , this secluded strip running south from Yoyogi has seen an explosion in late night café culture , unique eateries and flower shops over the past couple of years. For delicious tamago-sando sweet egg sandwiches crafted by a former sushi chef, Camelback Café should be your first pitstop, before you swing by Meals Are Delightful for ingredients and crockery (!) optimised to the current season , and then end your evening in Fuglen Tokyo, a cafe-beerhouse-cocktail bar open until 2am on the weekends. Better yet, 2023 will see the opening of the new Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park , complete with a rooftop infinity pool overlooking Yoyogi Park itself, located just a hop, skip and a jump away from the newly re-greened and renovated rooftop hangouts of Shibuya's Miyashita Park and the Shibuya Square viewing platform.

Azabudai Hills

tour japon 2023

Azabudai may not be a name most international travellers have heard, but to a Tokyoite, it says one thing - fancy! The Azabudai Hills is a  futuristic lifestyle complex  by UK design giants Heatherwick opening in 2023 among the well-heeled streets of south-west central Tokyo. Putting green spaces very much in the foreground with an ambitious 'pergola' design , it will feature a new temple, Japan’s tallest high-rise building, a sleek shopping arcade designed by acclaimed architect Sou Fujimoto, the new permanent location for teamLab Borderless  in Tokyo, and a new high-end Aman overnight property in autumn, Janu Tokyo, with private balconies looking out onto Tokyo Tower, one of the largest wellness facilities in the city and restorative experiences that nurture meaningful connection. Situated on the luxury end of the scale, this new addition to the Tokyo skyline will, nonetheless, be open for all to peruse on a stroll, undoubtedly making for a very rewarding spot of urban exploration .

tour japon 2023

Kicking off our list of cities to watch in 2023 is the urban jewel in Hokkaido's wild and untamed crown, Sapporo. Japan's fifth largest city is already a hotspot for ramen, nightlife and revelry (just ask the Sapporo Beer Museum and the whiskey haven Bar Yamazaki) but the post-pandemic return of the much-loved Sapporo Snow Festival in 2023 after a three year hiatus, should be reason enough to visit. Still, the 2022 opening of a new OMO3 property for adventurous travellers and a new 2023 entertainment complex with Tokyu Hotels at the helm, is looking to not just add a heftier dose of neon to the city's the buzzy Susukino district but to put the warren of late-night watering holes and crafty artisanal hideouts of Tanukikoji arcade firmly on the map.  Space 1-15 , in particular, shines as an old apartment block taken over by a flock of artisans and craftspeople, each setting up shop in a series of renovated one-bedroom flats. Throw in the 2023 Adventure Travel World Summit, and an announcement on Sapporo's bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics and you would be a fool to overlook this northern star on the rise.

tour japon 2023

2023 will be a huge year for art in Japan and nowhere is this more true than in the bayside city of Yokohama. This Tokyo-by-the-sea will welcome the return of the innovative Yokohama Triennale art festival , perfectly timed with the reopening of the Yokohama Museum of Art, after an impressive renovation. Whilst the festival and reopening have now been postponed to March 2024, you can still stroll 25 minutes along the river from here and find the community-led revitalisation project around Koganecho , a district where new artist programmes, galleries, art classes, book bazaars and street art installations have been decorating the dramatic railway arches of a forgotten Yokohama . 2023 will also see the opening of Yokohama’s first high-end Hilton property, following on from the gorgeous InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8 and its unhindered views of Minato Mirai shimmering on the water. Alternatively, you can jump aboard the recently opened Yokohama Air Cabin cablecar, particularly if you're after a vantage point on the annual Pikachu parade. Indeed, Pokémon and e-sports fans will be excited to hear that the next Pokémon World Championships will at long last take place in Yokohama in 2023 , marking the first time the event will be hosted in the franchise's homeland of Japan.

Now that we've established that Japan's 'most boring city' is officially not boring , it's about time we got to know Nagoya, not least because it will be the major transit point as the Studio Ghibli Park opens its final two sections (the Mononoke Village and Valley of the Witches) in 2023. Tickets aren't looking easy to get a hold of, and you may have to make repeat visits on different days to see all the areas, so it's great news that Nagoya has some top-tier hotels . Based on the concept of 'biophilia', TIAD or 'Tomorrow Is Another Day' is a new 2023 hotel where the green spaces of the ground floors blend with the nature of Hisaya Odori Park and the upper floors rise like mountains with commanding views of the glitzy Nagoya skyline. Meanwhile, The Tower Hotel Nagoya, suspended in the upper reaches of the city's iconic TV tower , brings a counter-cultural edge with art deco stylings and the large girders of the structure itself running through each room as centrepieces. Located in the buzzy backstreets of the Sakae and Shin-Sakae nightlife districts, both are an easy walk from the food stalls of the new Kanayama Komachi building or the Jump Comic (think Naruto and One Piece) stores of the space-age Oasis 21 building.

Not A Hotel Ishigaki

As if building a lawn into the roof of the highly innovative Shiroiya Hotel in 2022 wasn't enough, acclaimed designer Sou Fujimoto decided it was time to turn his gaze to Okinawa's tropical island of Ishigaki. Opening in 2023, this sci-fi luxury sea-view retreat is the next in the Not A Hotel apartment hotel series after Fukuoka, Aoshima and Nasu, and has the unique property of being raised as if from the ground, with meadows for a rooftop and windows for walls . The exclusive and one-of-a-kind circular property will foreground light and greenery, with an infinity pool blurring the lines between your veranda and the azure waters of Okinawa's most desirable vacation spot.

The Mana Village

tour japon 2023

The Mana Village ©ARTH

A collection of villa properties opening in stages on the wild and remote shores of Kochi prefecture , this recently renovated accommodation and restaurant sit on the waters of Shikoku's southernmost coastline. Excitingly, 2023 will bring the opening of a farm area for authentic experiences of the region's farm-to-table culture , with a private villa area due to open in 2024. However, in the meantime, you'll just have to make do with a marine leisure activity hub, a warren of hiking trails, a local market that visits the hotel on a regular basis , a full suite of stylish new bedrooms, and an exclusive seafood restaurant deck that stretches gloriously into the ocean , flanked by infinity pools on all sides.

Located in the former HQ of pop culture behemoth Nintendo , this Kyoto hotel is a stylishly renovated property opened in 2022, featuring a full complement of exclusive rooms and spaces. Set amongst the history of one of Japan's most iconic household names, it's a richly storied building located a short walk from the Kamo river and within easy reach of the Kyoto International Manga Museum by train. The furnishings themselves evoke a strong mix of East and West, reminiscent of Japan's Taisho era , with a special whiskey bar and an almost cathedral-like  library showcasing the works of Nintendo pre-Super Mario, though the ages and up until the modern day.

Zenbo Seinei

tour japon 2023

Zenbo Seinei ©Pasona Group

A new meditation experience centre hanging in the canopies of Hyogo prefecture, this wooden wellness retreat designed by award-winning architect Shigeru Ban is a simple overnight stay out from neighbouring Kyoto and Osaka. The facility takes the shape of a long wooden sky deck comprised of various levels and offers the total package when it comes to the zen experience . Whatever your preference, Zenbo Seinei is unlikely to disappoint in its comprehensive menu of experiences, including:  a spectacular open-air meditation deck , a roster of both Japanese and international meditation specialists, wood-furnished rooms with tatami made for overnight 'shukubo' stays , study rooms for contemplation and 'shakyo' mindful calligraphy sessions and, of course, a restaurant serving fresh seasonal cuisine alongside locally sourced fermented foods.

From the modern all the way to the traditional, the 2022 opening of the Rakudo-An in Toyama prefecture brings us back to a slice of Japan's unique history and traditions. Set in the stunning 'satoyama' agricultural landscapes of the Sea of Japan coast, this 120 year old farmhouse has been renovated into the art hotel that stands before you today. It features furniture and art provided by legends in the diverse world of Japanese artisanal crafts as well as some of the biggest names in international architecture and design , like Pierre Jeanneret (Swiss architect and cousin of Le Corbusier) and Hans J. Wegner. With a roster of experiences on offer - including tea ceremony, guided walks and aromatherapy craft sessions - as well as a programme that gives back to the local farming community , it's an absolute must for the culturally-curious responsible traveller.

  IN THE UK

tour japon 2023

Though borders are now fully open for all to visit Japan in a visa-free way, you might still be holding out for further into next year. If that is the case, don't think you won't remain well fed, as the ways to experience and learn about Japan from the UK are only growing .

Over at Japan House, for example, an exhibition running until end of January 2023 (opening 29th Sep) will put the focus on the incredible woodwork and artisinal crafts of the forested mountainous region of Hida , Takayama, famous for its lumber and carpentry industries. From March onwards, the exhibition will transition towards a focus on the beautiful and intricate tradition of 'kumihimo' Japanese braiding , with spectacular examples on display around the building. Go west from London, and you'll be able to take a step back in time to pre-historic Japan and compare how the Jomon people were in relation to the UK's prehistoric peoples at Stonehenge's 'Circles of Stone' exhibition (ending August 2023) . Alternatively, go north and enjoy a sumptuous selection of finely crafted items at The National Museum of Scotland's exhibition on contemporary Japanese design , running until 5th March 2023.

Elsewhere, the pop culture fans out there have real reason to rejoice! London-based inclusive community group Anime & Chill UK are celebrating their 3rd birthday on 19th March at Boxpark Shoreditch, in amongst their usual menu of Japan-themed anime and gaming events, while the star-studded Super Mario Bros Movie will be opening in cinemas in April 2023. And all that in a year that promises more news on a Hollywood adaptation of popular video game Ghost of Tsushima , and long-awaited fan-requested arrival of Ubisoft's Assassins Creed into medieval Japan coming in the not too distant future.

We'll stop at the Imperial Palace Plaza for a photo before we enjoy a sushi-making class with a sushi chef, and eat our sushi for lunch. Our tour continues with a visit to Asakusa Kannon, Tokyo's most spectacular and sacred Buddhist temple. Narrow alleys filled with small shops, restaurants, and tranquil gardens surround the temple. tour japon 2023

Japan's pastoral countryside unfolds as we depart Tokyo today for Mt. Fuji and Hakone. The main attraction here is majestic Mt. Fuji, a dormant volcano that last erupted almost 300 years ago. The mountain's perfectly shaped cone has inspired artists and poets for centuries. Weather permitting, we'll drive up to the fifth station of the snow capped peak for panoramic vistas. Next, we'll embark on a scenic boat ride on tranquil Lake Ashi before we enjoy a gondola ride for a sweeping view of Hakone and Mt. Fuji. We'll return to Tokyo late this afternoon.

Day 4: Tokyo at Leisure

We’ll visit one of these houses and learn more about daily life in this remote area. We'll continue to the village of Gokayama where we can enjoy a demonstration of traditional Japanese papermaking techniques. We'll have an opportunity to make three postcards with Washi paper with the guidance of a local expert. Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

8 Ways to Choose the Perfect Tour Company

Last Updated: November 3, 2023

tour group posing with Nomadic Matt during a hike in the hills

That idea of tours being bad is an old and outdated perception.

These days tour groups have become more adept at the changing landscape. They feature smaller groups, more authentic experiences, a better environmental impact, and more local guides.

I love group tours.

Even though I am an independent traveler, I find group tours super fun, a great way to meet people, learn more from an informed guide, go to places you normally can’t, and wet your feet in travel. My first trip overseas was on an organized tour. I didn’t know the first thing about travel and that tour gave me the confidence to travel on my own. It was the taste test I needed to become hooked on travel. Tours give a lot of people time to adjust to the “travel lifestyle.”

Unlike in the past, today’s tours are eco-friendly, cater to all travel styles, over cheap, and make a point to use local transportation and guides. And many destinations (like Halong Bay, the Galápagos Islands, the Serengeti, Machu Picchu, Antarctica, Everest) are virtually inaccessible without an organized group tour!

In this article, I am going to tell you how to find the best tour company so you get one that is inexpensive, eco-friendly, provides local guides, and gives back to the local community:

1. Research the costs

With tour companies, it’s not always true that you get what you pay for. Many tour companies nickel-and-dime you, while some are really good at maximizing value for your every penny. Ask how your money is spent to find out if you are really getting the best value for your money. How much of your fee is their overhead? Are you paying for top-notch hotels but staying in two-star guesthouses? You want a company that is transparent with why prices are the way they are.

Moreover, make sure you ask if there are added fees to pay when arrive. Many companies require you to pay additional money when the tour starts or don’t include park or attraction entrance fees. That cheap tour won’t be so cheap if you have to pay for everything while you’re there!

2. Make sure you are the audience

Is the tour geared toward older couples? Young people? Families? You don’t want to end up on a loud Contiki tour full of drunk twenty-year-olds when all you want is a quiet holiday.

There’s a tour company for everyone — just make sure you don’t end up on one that isn’t yours. Most tour companies list their guest demographics on their “About” page, and you can usually see from the photos of their tours who goes on it.

You can also tell the audience based on accommodation: if it’s hostels or guesthouses, it’s usually for backpackers and budget travelers; if it’s fancy digs, it’s for older travelers and families.

This is very important because these are the people you’ll be traveling with so you want to make sure it’s the kind of people you are traveling with. I’m still friends with the people from my first tour in 2003 because they were people like me. The tour in Japan that was filled with older families? Not so much. We didn’t have much in common. Wonderful people but we didn’t connect.

So, I always look for tours that have my demographic in them.

3. Get local guides

Guides can make or break your trip. They are going to explain everything to you and keep the flow of the tour going. I don’t want them hiring some young kid, non-expert, or someone who doesn’t know the place well. I’ve been on tours where the guide was a walking encyclopedia, and on somewhere the guide was a glorified timekeeper.

Make sure the company uses knowledgeable, local guides. The guide should be a local or at least a long-term resident, know the local language, have travel experience, and know life-saving techniques.

If you are unsure about the guides, call the customer service line and ask them about their guides.

4. Safety record

Make sure the company follows all the proper safety requirements and is accredited by the local government, the government where they are registered, and any other appropriate trade organizations.

5. A balanced schedule

You’re paying for them to fill most of your day. How do they do that? Are they doing that? Do they have a lot of activities organized, or do they leave you to your own devices?

That said, you don’t want a schedule that is crammed with things to do. Make sure you get a schedule of all the activities and pick a tour that is balanced. Running around will leave you wishing you had a holiday from your holiday, but you don’t want to be sitting around all day, either.

I love taking small group tours because they generally have a good balance. Any tour that requires you to be on a huge bus and hits 6 cities in 5 days is not a tour to take!

6. Environmental impact

There’s a growing trend among travelers called ecotourism . It’s about more responsible travel, not only toward the environment but also toward the locals in an area. This means using local guides, hotels, and services, and making sure to reduce waste and your footprint on the local habitat.

Moreover, these companies tend to offer better and more interactive tours that also give you a good degree of autonomy.

I think it’s important to pick a company that provides great value and gives back to the place you are visiting. After all, did you go there to ruin it for others? Doubtful.

Check with groups like the International Ecotourism Society for a list of companies that have been certified “eco-friendly.” With so much money pouring into the industry now, you have a lot of companies fraudulently saying they practice ecotourism but end up being involved in terrible labor practices, animal abuse, and waste.

7. Group size

Tour companies that have smaller groups tend to be much more mindful of the environment and the impact they are leaving. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a group of 10-15 than it is in a group of 60. I don’t like to go on tours with more than 15 people on them. However, I have friends who love Contiki tours with 40-50 people. Know what you are getting yourself into, so you don’t find yourself with a group too small or too large for your tastes.

Just remember larger groups tend to stay at bigger, more impersonal accommodations (they can only accommodate the numbers), eat at more touristy restaurants, and tend to travel to more destinations quicker.

In my expert opinion, small group tours are the best.

8. Check their reputation

How have other travelers enjoyed their time? Look for online reviews to see what a company’s reputation is. It might not always be what they claim, and it’s important to find out the truth before you book.

Remember that MOST people only write a review if something goes wrong. Someone might give a tour company one star just because their eggs were runny. Find the average. Someone might hate a tour because the weather was hot. Seriously. These are actual negative reviews from the tour operator company, Thomas Cook:

“On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”

“We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

“We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”

“No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”

“Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”

“When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”

“We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”

So how can you trust the reviews you read online?

Take them with a grain of salt. You can read reviews on websites TrustPilot . The approval rating should look like a bell curve but with more A’s and B’s than C’s. I look for companies that average 85% or higher (or 4 out of 5 stars). If a company is that highly rated, the negative reviews are probably just outliers.

My Recommended (Best) Tour Companies

Here are some of my favorite small, day-tour, or backpacker bus tour companies:

  • Take Walks – This is my favorite walking tour company. They run a wide variety of insightful and entertaining tours around Europe and the US. What makes them so good is they get you inside access to attractions and places you can’t get elsewhere. Their guides rock too!
  • Get Your Guide – A massive marketplace for tours, activities, and excursions. If you’re looking for something niche, you’ll find it here!
  • Devour Food Tours – My go-to tour company for tasty food tours around Europe and the US.
  • Kiwi Experience – A hop-on, hop-off bus tour company in New Zealand for backpackers!
  • Baz Bus – A hop on, hop off again bus tour company in South Africa for all travelers.
  • New Europe – Free walking tours throughout Europe.
  • Free Tours By Foot – Pay-what-you-like tours throughout Europe and the United States. They are one of my favorite free walking tour companies in the world!

THE #1 COMPANY FOR MULTI-DAY SMALL GROUP TOURS

When it comes to multi-day, multi-week tours (think trips through Morocco, sailing in the Galápagos, etc.), I highly recommend using Intrepid Travel .

Intrepid is my favorite and best small group tour operator out there! I really love their guides, their small groups, off-the-beaten-track itineraries, and their commitment to the local environment and community. I always have an incredible time on their tours. They are my favorite multi-day tour operator and the only one I use now (the picture at the top of this page is me on their Patagonia trip). Intrepid is environmentally friendly, uses local guides and transportation, doesn’t rush their tours, and are quite inexpensive. I don’t even consider anyone else when it comes to multi-day trips.

I love tours. They are a great way to meet people, get a local to add value and knowledge, and see places you can’t get to alone! I don’t take them often but I do take them. And, since I follow the above rules, I always have a good time. Some of my favorite travel memories were when I was on a group trip. If you follow my tips above, you’ll never go wrong either.

Andy Sullivan and Kim Yeongsu tied at the top in Japan

Andy Sullivan and Kim Yeongsu posted opening 63s to lead the way after the first round of the 2023 ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan.

Four-time DP World Tour champion Sullivan fired eight birdies at PGM Ishioka Golf Club on Thursday, with his only blemish a bogey on the seventh.

South Korean Kim, the KPGA’s 2022 Genesis Point Award winner, produced a flawless first round containing seven birdies to join Sullivan on seven under par.

Swede Alexander Björk, Canada's Aaron Cockerill and South African Deon Germishuys were one shot behind the leaders in a three-way tie for third.

Home favourites Keita Nakajima, Yosuke Asaji and Ryutaro Nagano were then on five under alongside Jacques Kruyswijk, Sebastian Söderberg, Brad Kennedy, Daniel Hillier and Marcel Schneider.

Sullivan started from the tenth tee and made birdies at the 12th, 15th, 16th and 18th to reach the turn in 31.

He then reeled off a hat-trick of birdies from the third before recovering from a bogey on the seventh with a closing gain from around eight feet.

The Englishman said: "Really pleased, just got off to a good start.

"A lot of right flags out there for me to find - as my playing partner Romain Langasque told me! He was like 'Every flag out there is a right flag and you fade the ball so it’s perfect for you today'.

"It was good fun playing with Brendan (Lawlor) and Romain, very relaxed vibe. It was just like going out there and playing with your mates, really.

"Me and my coach have been working on going back to when I was playing my best, around 2015, 16, so we’ve looked at swings from there and almost tried to mimic that.

"It’s getting close, feel confident with the irons. Driver is still taking a bit of work. On the whole the game is feeling good. It feels a lot more under control again, less of the erratic shots."

Kim picked up his first birdie of the day at the fourth before catching fire around the turn, as he reeled off six birdies in eight holes from the ninth for a share of the lead.

He said: "I feel good because I didn’t make any bogeys today.

"My shots were not in good shape at the beginning. However, it seems I putted well, so that helped today’s score.

"I hope it goes well tomorrow. I will be able to play with less stress because I played well today."
