Eco, Sustainable & Green Travel Tours & Travel Guide
Eco, Sustainable & Green Travel Attractions & Landmarks Guide
Sustainable vacations have transformative power since every step you take positively impacts the world. Travelers can shape the future of tourism by championing eco-conscious adventures.
As travelers, we are ideal ambassadors to promote the benefits of ecotourism through education, understanding, and bringing revenue to parts of the world in need of ecological conservation.
What Does EcoTourism Mean?
In 2015, the International EcoTourism Society defined EcoTourism as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education." These eco trips usually focused on nature and popularized the tagline, "Take only photos, leave only footprints ."
Today's eco vacations involve much more than "doing the least harm possible on our travels."
Many tour operators are taking steps to actively and positively contribute to offsetting carbon emissions through forestation and clean energy projects, protecting endangered wildlife species, and setting up tourism projects that include local communities around the world and allow them to benefit from tourism.
Sustainable and Responsible Tourism
These two terms are often used interchangeably, and while there are some similarities, there are also some subtle differences.
Sustainable Tourism is the idea of visiting a place and creating only a positive impact on the environment, economy, and local society.
On the other hand, Responsible Tourism focuses more on making the best choices possible in each travel moment: promoting best practices while traveling, always showing respect for the places we visit and people we meet, and protecting places so that future generations can still enjoy them.
Creating a Positive Impact
Irrespective of how we define different terms, the point of eco vacations isn't only to avoid harm and create a positive impact. By embracing this new and (fortunately) increasingly popular type of travel, we can make a real difference to tourism worldwide and its impact.

Does EcoTourism Really Work?
Ecotourism has emerged as a powerful force for positive change, offering numerous benefits to the environment and local communities. By prioritizing sustainability and responsible travel practices, ecotourism helps preserve fragile ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and mitigate the negative impacts of traditional tourism activities, such as habitat destruction and pollution.
Moreover, ecotourism contributes to the economic development of rural and marginalized communities by providing employment opportunities, supporting local businesses, and generating revenue for conservation efforts. This form of tourism empowers local communities to take ownership of their natural resources and cultural heritage, fostering pride and stewardship.
Additionally, ecotourism promotes cultural exchange and environmental education, raising awareness about the importance of conservation and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. By promoting ethical and sustainable travel experiences, ecotourism not only benefits travelers but also leaves a lasting positive impact on the destinations visited.
Tips for Being a Responsible Traveler
An eco vacation requires responsible travelers to make it worthwhile. By adopting sustainable practices and respecting local cultures, you can minimize your environmental impact and contribute positively to the communities you visit.
Reduce Plastic Waste: Bring a reusable water bottle and shopping bag to minimize plastic consumption. Avoid single-use plastics whenever possible and support businesses that prioritize eco-friendly packaging.
Choose Eco-Friendly Accommodations: Look for hotels, lodges, or homestays that have implemented sustainable practices such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and local community engagement. Look for eco-certifications or green initiatives when booking accommodations.
Respect Wildlife and Nature: Observe wildlife from a distance and refrain from feeding, touching, or disturbing animals in their natural habitat. Stay on designated trails to minimize damage to ecosystems and respect plants and animals in reserves and wildlife sanctuaries.
Conserve Water and Energy: Practice water and energy conservation by taking shorter showers, turning off lights and electronics when not used, and using towels and linens responsibly. Support hotels and accommodations that use renewable energy sources and implement water-saving measures.
Support Local Communities: Spend money at local businesses, markets, and restaurants to support the local economy and empower communities. Engage with locals respectfully, learn about their culture and traditions, and consider volunteering or participating in community-based tourism initiatives.
Minimize Carbon Footprint: Choose eco-friendly transportation options such as walking, cycling, or using public transportation whenever possible. Offset your carbon footprint by supporting carbon offset programs or choosing airlines with carbon-neutral initiatives.
Leave No Trace: Pack out trash or waste and dispose of it properly, following local recycling and waste management guidelines. Leave natural areas as you found them, preserving the environment for future generations to enjoy.
Educate Yourself: Learn about the environmental and cultural issues facing the destinations you visit and strive to be an informed and responsible traveler. Support organizations and initiatives that promote sustainability, conservation, and responsible tourism practices.

Mountains & Beaches in Costa Rica
The same driver picked us up at the airport in Liberia and drove us to the Hacienda Guachipelin, and then picked us up and drove us to Tamarindo Beach, and then picked us up and drove us back to the airport. So, that was nice. He gave each of us a water bottle. We didn’t use them but it was a nice touch. I loved Hacienda Gauchipelin. It was very pretty. The rooms were large (the first night we had one room, the second two nights we had another room), the bathrooms were large and there was a nice veranda in front of each room. The buffet breakfast in one of the open-air dining rooms was very nice and for lunch and dinner there was a choice of buffet or à la carte. I loved the walking tour into Pailas National Park, K. didn’t love it because – unbeknownst to me – she has difficulty walking on inclines and steps. But the tour guide was able to adapt the tour to take us on the easiest part of the trail first, rather than last as he usually does, and then she went back to the trailhead where there was a little café and waiting area. The rest of the walking tour was like a mini Yellowstone, because the park is volcanic, so we saw steam holes that made noise (I’m sure there’s a name for them), mud pots, some wild monkeys and interesting vegetation, and then a visit to a pretty waterfall. The following day we did the zip line tour. Safety was a priority for the staff so they did a good job fitting us and a family of 5 with helmets, gloves and harnesses. On the first part of the zip line one of the staff went with K. to make sure that she could do it. In the afternoon we took the Hacienda bus over to the hot springs. It was not my cup of tea, but worth seeing once. I didn’t love Tamarindo Beach, but that’s mostly because it is a typical beach town that you can see anywhere. Think Galveston with a trucks thundering down the main street. There was a glitch at the hotel, the Diria, which was really K.’s fault for not having indicated that she can’t climb stairs. The hotel occupies the beach side and a larger space across the street from the beach. Initially they put us in a room that required climbing a short flight and then a longer flight of stairs. When I called to request a room with no stairs for access (assuming that they had an elevator building) initially they wanted to put us somewhere further up hill, but when I rejected it and the bellman came over and met K. to assess the problem, then they gave us the handicap accessible room the beach side. It was very nice; they tried to be accommodating. The buffet breakfast was nice. The grounds were nice with plenty of places to sit in the sun or the shade, several swimming pools and easy beach access. There was no plan for the next day and I don’t like shopping, so I went to the tour desk for the hotel and arranged a tour to a waterfall and an animal sanctuary. That was very nice, but apparently whoever booked this tour either in Canada or the local outfitter just dropped the ball and expected us to sit around for 2.5 days. The real problem was the next day, when we were scheduled for the Catamaran Sunset Tour cruise for snorkeling and watching the sunset. The instructions said only that we had to get there on our own, with no information about where the meeting place was. The link on the itinerary didn’t work. So, I went to the Concierge desk and someone called the local number for the cruise company. That person texted me a link to a location that was only a 5 minute walk away, but wasn’t the meeting place, either. Finally, after some discussion, the owner of the business gave us a ride to the meeting location about a mile away on the beach, and then asked his skipper to assist K. into the dinghy and then into the catamaran. When we got back there was a cab driver waiting for us, at no charge. They were very nice and kind. There was an open bar but the bar tended kept an eye on who was drinking how much, and provided some extra pineapple slices for me and the people I was talking to to munch when he heard us exclaiming about it. They provided a buffet lunch. They had two groups of visitors who were repeat customers. The swimming cove was nice. I didn’t snorkel but we had a nice time sitting on the side of the boat and dangling our legs. They were so kind that I left a nice review on TripAdvisor. I wouldn’t advise sending someone to the beach again, but I would do the national park again.
Tortuguero: A natural paradise in Costa Rica
Really great tour. Sebastian, our guide, was great and really knowledgeable about everything in the area. The tours were fun and the transportation was really convenient. The trip to the town was ok, it was kind of obligatory. You can do the tours and kayaking in two days though.
The Costa Rican Caribbean Adventure
We enjoyed our brief trip to Costa Rica, though we were disapppointed by hte number of people on the tour since the website had said "No more than 16 travelers" and we had at least 26, if not more, for most activities. That was a particular problem when it came to guided nature walks on single-file paths, where the people at the end of the line had almost no chance of hearing the guide--who was extremely knowledgeable. That said, we were especially impressed with the Toruguero National Park and the amazing array of flora and fauna we saw there. We also really liked the Pachira Lodge where we stayed for 2 nights near the park. We felt we were well taken care of in terms of transportation and transfers, and all of our drivers were excellent and courteous. Costa Rica is a wonderful place to visit!
Costa Rica Wildlife Exploration
Great communication, professional high quality on-time transfers, good selection of activities and locations to visit, all accommodations were quality except for one (Rancho Corcovado Hotel was terrible). All guided activities were excellent except for one (Night Walk - Monteverde Cloud Forest). The company that provided the service was not professional. Overall I would highly recommend Green World Adventures to manage my wildlife adventure holiday - specify all rooms must have AC and plan on arranging some of your own local activities. Accommodations, guided activities and transportation were clean, safe, professional and enjoyable. The people of Costa Rica are friendly and welcoming and their country is beautiful - go have your own adventure!
Costa Rica Family Vacations
Wonderful experience, our guides and chauffeurs were all excellent. Our accommodation were very comfortable.
Our Costa Rican Highlights
Overall, I would say the trip was great. Most of our tour guides were just exceptional and I really enjoyed all of the activities we did. The transport between cities and to the different activities was great and almost always on time. My only complaints were that the hotel locations were very bad for guests who don’t have cars and are relying on walking, and that several of the activities did not provide a lot of information ahead of time that would have been very helpful to know.

are you ready for the green adventure?
Every journey begins with a single step. You can start your green adventure right now and we will make your dreams of seeing the northern lights come true.
On the day of the tour we will pick you up in front of Scandic Ishavshotel. We prefer to gather the whole group in one meeting point, then we have more time for chasing Aurora. Sometimes the lights can appear early, so there is no time to loose. We value the intimate atmosphere very much, so we provide small group tours. With small group we are able to reach hidden places rather than big buses with 50 other people, so if you want to enjoy the Northern Lights while avoiding the crowds - this is the tour for you. At the beginning we will do a short introduction about weather conditions, possibilities to see the lights and selected locations for chasing. We also have contact with other trusted guides to increase our chances.
If there's an Aurora waiting for us somewhere, we'll find her! Hovewer you need to also understand that this is natural phenomena, caused by solar wind. We cannot make for you artificial Northern Lights, unless you have nuclear weapon. We will do our best to find clear skies, but then also Aurora must do her best. Hopefully She likes to show off to positive people, so you'd better bring a good mood with you.
Once we find the right place under the clear skies, we will set up a camp for the evening. We will equip you with thermal suits, but you should remember about comfortable shoes and woolen socks, cause often we have to walk in deep snow a bit away from our car. If you decide to bring your own camera, we are happy to give you tips about the best settings and w e've got tripods for cameras. However you can count on our professional photos, cause you are here to enjoy the northern lights with your eyes . When the Aurora appears in the sky, we will take as many photos as you wish.
Sitting by the campfire is the perfect time to eat warm soup and drink hot chocolate. We always use local soups, the best for cold, arctic conditions. We will tell you our stories about northern lights and arctic nature to make this evening even more special. This is green adventure, so we also doing our best to protect environment and leave the place in the same conditions as it was before our visit.
We highly value your safety in the middle of the night, so after the tour, we will drop you off to your hotel in the city center of Tromso (or taxi stand if you have accommodation outside the city center). Behind the Business: Big Green Adventure Tours
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Southern Idaho is known for its gorgeous views and amazing sights, and one business is passionate about showing people around.
This week’s Behind the Business takes us to Big Green Adventure Tours.
Whether you have lived in Idaho your whole life or who are just passing through, it doesn’t take long to realize there are a lot of beautiful sights.
Big Green Adventure Tours is there to help you see them all.
“I moved to Twin Falls about eight years ago and coming from Las Vegas where I was an adventure tour guide as well, I noticed the town did not have an adventure tour company that did land tours like I do, so decided to open my own business, which is this company here and do adventure tours for our tourists here in Twin Falls,” said Gabrielle Burton, the owner of Big Green Adventure Tours.
People can choose which tour they would like, either Dierkes Lake and Shoshone Falls, Craters of the Moon, Shoshone Falls and the city tour, the Hagerman Valley Tour, or the scenic wine tasting tour.
“Our tours begin with pick up and we pick up at all hotels, at local RV parks, Air BnB’s, we try to make it as easy as possible, try to take all of the worry out of it as possible. We all travel in a luxury SUV, we only have seven passengers per group, we try to keep it small. Our tours are either four hours in the morning or four hours in the afternoon, or we do the full day with lunch out at Craters of the Moon,” said Burton.
She says her tours include facts and history of the area and the entire tour is customized to their liking.
“We ask the customers what they like, do they like to take pictures, do they like history, what do they like? So, we customize the tour’s narration to what they like, and we also help them take their photos, so they don’t have to feel like they are always taking selfies on their own vacation,” said Burton.
Normally they give 165 to 175 tours per year.
Their tour season is from March 1 through Nov. 30.
The tours are given every day, but they do book up quickly.
“A lot of people might not realize that Idaho is kind of a bucket list state, I hear so many times on tour, ‘we never thought of coming to Idaho’, so what I get out of it is I get to show them this amazing scenery we have here in little old Twin Falls, and I get the response so many times over and over, ‘we never knew,’” said Burton.
If you would like to book a tour you can do so by visiting this link or by calling 208-735-2268.

Testimonials
What our travelers say about us.
Years ago I heard Tara say ‘be a traveler, not a tourist’ and I love that the Green Edventures trips encompass SO many opportunities to do just that. The underwater environment in Baja is amazing and is coupled with fantastic staff, wonderful camaraderie, and just the right amount of environmental education. I can’t wait for the day when I bring my own children to Baja (and other locations) – what an incredible way to experience our world! As always, I can’t wait until my next “Edventure”!
Baja Tour, (Alaska 2016!)
I really loved all of the interactive learning.
Trinidad & Tobago Tour
Thank you very much for all of your hard work in organizing a fantastic trip for my students. I am very appreciative. You did a great job. Every student loved you, Courtenay and the rest of the gang.
In the past 4 years I have been on 6 trips with Green Edventure and have one planned for this summer and next. If you are a person who values the outdoors, biology, and ecology and wishes to instill these same values into your family, friends, and/or students then look no further. Green Edventures is in a league of its own from an educational, fun, and ecotourism standpoint. My family, students and myself have had such wonderful and enlightening experiences through these trips! Feel free to reach out to me with any questions! [email protected]

I just wanted to thank you for an amazing adventure. Tara and Chebelo were absolutely amazing guides, and I will never forget this trip. I also want to thank you both for being so accommodating with my dietary needs; I know it isn’t easy, and you made it work so well (I ate like a king!) You are both fun, informed, gracious and caring people and I am lucky to have gotten to spend the week with you. — Thank you again!

When we started this great adventure it was just a dream, just ideas of how to create a different company, a tour operator that would show the beauty of Costa Rica and its people… After several conversations, analyzing the pros and cons, finally in November 2008 We decided to start this company, which we started with zero money but tons of passion.
