15 Best TOURIST SPOTS in MINDANAO 2024 (Beaches, Falls, Rivers & More)

 alt=

As we all know, Mindanao is the second largest of the three (3) major Philippine Islands. It is approximately 97,530 sq. km and is home to 25% of the entire nation’s population. Mindanao is the farthest island region from the capital Metro Manila, this is the reason why sometimes it is outshined by its siblings Luzon and Visayas in the tourism industry.

However, make no mistake! Because through the years, Mindanao is becoming more and more popular not only in the country but also in the whole world. A lot of tourists are discovering hidden gems in the entire region that are worthy of international attention. Mindanao has an enormous set of preserved natural wonders from mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and everything that you can imagine!

The proud island of Mindanao is also being recognized in the whole world! Firstly, it has long been known as the home of the Philippines’ tallest mountain, Mt. Apo. It’s also the breeding grounds of the largest eagle in the world in terms of length and wingspan! Yes, I’m talking about no other than our very own Philippine Eagle. Aside from these natural wonders, several personalities in our current society proudly represent Mindanao! First of all, the current Philippine president, Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte traces his roots from the major city of Davao itself. Also, our first Filipino Olympic Gold Medalist, Hidilyn Diaz also comes from Mindanao!

With the current rise of Mindanao to the spotlight of Philippine tourism, I won’t be surprised if it becomes the tourism capital of the country in no time! How do I prove it? Well, tune in because, in this article, we’re going to discover the fifteen top tourist destinations in Mindanao!

Siargao Island’s Cloud 9 was among the world’s best-surfing spots according to international broadcasting giant, CNN. 2. Hinatuan Enchanted River

Next up is a truly magical place to be on the island of Mindanao. The Hinatuan Enchanted River or sometimes called the Hinatuan Sacred River baffles the minds of everyone who visits it and at the same time makes them all fall in love with its very own natural beauty.

Hidden somewhere in the jungles of Surigao del Sur, is a deep spring river exuding a miraculous clear blue water. Technically, it can’t be considered a river because of two (2) reasons. Firstly, it is a saltwater river. It flows into the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean. And secondly, it is relatively short to be considered a river. Nevertheless, all those doubts are answered by the name of the river itself because it truly is enchanting.

The best part? The Hinatuan Enchanted River isn’t only for sightseeing. Aside from taking remarkable photos, visitors are allowed to dive and swim on the river! Of course, keep in mind that this tourist spot is a beautiful creation of nature. Let’s do our part and preserve it so future generations can still have a chance to witness it.

3. Tinuy-An Falls

This curtain-like waterfall is hailed as “The Little Niagara Falls of the Philippines”. The stream of water cascades into three (3) separate tiers so tourists have a wide area to explore! Unlike other established beaches and islands in the country, Malamawi Island is not that crowded yet. However, several resorts are already starting to develop the island for many years now so you can expect that lots of rooms and cottages are already available by the time of your visit!

The best part about visiting Malamawi Island is that you seemingly have the entire island just for yourself. 6. Asik-Asik Falls

Nestled in the jungles of Cotabato is one of the natural wonders of nature. The Asik-Asik Falls are found in the mountains of Mount Ragang. That’s right. The wall is approximately 140 meters wide and about 60 meters tall. At a sight, the Asik-Asik Falls looks like a green curtain with water flowing from the spots of rocks. That view itself earns the respect of many photographers all over the country, so be sure to try it!

It is said that the place was formed as a resting place for the first settlers of Camiguin who were buried alive during the eruption of Mt. Vulcan. The place is so popular that more tourists are said to be visiting the graves than the relatives of the dead themselves. So, aside from taking pictures and admiring the view, please offer a prayer to all the lost souls of Camiguin.

Travel Tips When Visiting Various Tourist Spots in Mindanao

Many are scared they heard Mindanao. Mindanao is relatively safe. I had visited numerous tourist spots in Mindanao, and I didn’t experience any problems for each of my travels. Of course, every traveler must exercise the necessary precautions when visiting a new place, including all places in the world.

In line with the above, we recommend the following if you plan to visit any tourist spots in Mindanao.

  • Research. Before your trip, it is imperative to research the place before hitting the road. You should know if there is a pending advisory at the place. Learn the bus schedules, especially the last trip, etc. Many daring tourists meet some accidents because they miss the last bus and are forced to sleep on the street or at the terminal.
  • Contact the Local Tourism Office. This office will give you sound advice on where to go or whether to go in certain seasons.
  • Avail the services of accredited tour operators. Let’s face it: you need a guide in some places, and you cannot do it alone.
  • Get some travel insurance. Just a few more bucks will surely save you from any unforeseen accidents.
  • Check and recheck the information you get online. Not all travel bloggers who wrote about the place have been there. This is one of the reasons why I put my pics on my blog pages as much as possible to show the readers researching that I had been in the place.
  • Ask. Try to be friendly and talk to the locals when you reach the place. They can provide you with priceless pieces of information and tips.

Mindanao, the massive island at the foot of the Philippine archipelago, is in many ways the cultural heart of the country, a place where Indigenous people still farm their ancient homelands and Christians live alongside Muslims who first settled here in the fourteenth century. Due to anti-government insurgencies, terrorist attacks and tourist kidnappings, caution is advised against travel anywhere on the island with the exception of the islands of Siargao and Camiguin, one of the country’s most appealing tourist spots and an island with more volcanoes per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

North Mindanao, which sees the most tourist activity, is comparatively safe and accessible, most visitors make a beeline for the pint-sized island of Camiguin.

Elsewhere, northeast Mindanao is rich in ecotourism potential and offshore islands. Highlights include the ancient wooden boat discovered at Butuan, the spellbinding Enchanted River and the surfing and backpacker hotspot of Siargao.

The southeast is home to Mindanao’s largest city, Davao, a diverse and friendly place best known for its fresh fruit. Davao is also the gateway to Mount Apo, the nation’s highest peak and a magnet for trekkers and climbers.

The countryside nearby Davao and coast offer plenty of attractions, from Samal Island to the Philippine Eagle Center.

Much of western Mindanao is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), an area of huge tourism potential, but where the security situation is in a state of flux. Check the current security situation before considering a visit.

Whether you want to sunbathe and surf or experience something more adventurous, there are plenty of things to do in Mindanao. These are the best:

#1 Go whitewater rafting on the Cagayan de Oro River

Whitewater rafting along the fourteen major rapids of the Cagayan de Oro River gained popularity after former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took a ride here in 2002.

The jumping-off point is at the barangay of Mambuaya, a thirty- to forty-minute ride from the city proper. The wet months (Sept and Oct) are best for intermediate and professional levels (when the rapids range from class 3 to 4), while the rest of the year is more suitable for beginners.

#2 Get a taste of lanzones in Camiguin

Visit this dazzling little island in October, when the colourful four-day Lanzones festival is held. Held in the fourth week of October, revellers dressed only in lanzones leaves (a tropical fruit) stomp and dance in the streets as a tribute to the humble fruit, one of the island’s major sources of income. It's a vibrant and good-natured outdoor party.

Find oud more about Camiguin

#3 Be wowed by the Enchanted River

This magical, remote lagoon is a deep cove of crystalline water crammed with colourful tropical fish – a visual delight. Swimming in the Enchanted River is one of the highlights of a trip to Mindanao.

The accessible part of the river is more like a narrow saltwater lagoon that ends at an underwater cave and ravine crammed with all sorts of tropical fish that get fed every day at noon.

The colours are mesmerizing; the water glows like liquid sapphire, surrounded by dense jungle and karst outcrops. The site is managed as a small park, but it’s well off the beaten path, and few foreign tourists make it this far.

#4 Check out the backpacking scene on Siargao Island

Off the northeastern tip of Mindanao lies the teardrop-shaped island of Siargao, on of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines . It's a largely undeveloped backwater with languid beaches, dramatic coves and lagoons battered by the Pacific Ocean.

Some of the first tourists here were surfers, who discovered a Pacific reef break at Tuason Point – so good, they called it Cloud 9. Though old-timers now dub it “Crowd 9” because of its popularity, there is a friendly, welcoming surfing scene here.

Siargao gives Malapascua and Panglao a run for their money as the backpacker capital of the southern Philippines .

The annual Surfing Cup, usually held in late September or early October, attracts international competitors from Australia, the US and Europe, as well as from around the Philippines

#5 Get clued up at the Museum of Three Cultures

The Museum of Three Cultures is devoted to the Christians, Muslims and seven Indigenous traditions (or “Lumad”) of northern Mindanao.

The first gallery is dedicated to this history, with exhibits on the Huluga Caves, early trade with China and the Butuan boats.

The most interesting section is dedicated to the M’ranao 9 of Marawi, an area at the heart of the Moro dispute. Exhibits cover Islamic brass work, giant ceremonial swords and traditional torogan-style houses.

#6 Get your thrills at Dahilayan Adventure Park

Billed as Mindanao’s most extreme playground, the Dahilayan Adventure Park makes for an entertaining day out, primarily for its long zipline and refreshingly cool alpine location, in the hills some 1370m above sea level.

The Dahilayan Zip Zone comprises three ziplines: an exhilarating 320m section, a tamer 150m segment, and the 840m finale, where you are chained into a full-body harness before hurtling down the mountain at 90km/hour. There’s also whitewater rafting – either come with a group or call in advance and they should be able to place you in a boat (minimum six).

#7 Gawp at Maria Cristina Falls

The most impressive cascade in the region, and located within the NPC Nature Park, the Maria Cristina Falls serves as the main source of power for much of Mindanao.

The twin falls (named after two heartbroken girls who are supposed to have jumped from the top), plunge 100m into the torrential Agus River, and are at their best on Saturday and Sunday at 11am, when the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant upstream releases the most water. There is a zipline here, too.

#8 Sunbathe on White Island

About halfway between Mambajao and Bonbon, off the island’s northwest coast, lies one of Camiguin’s most popular attractions, White Island, a dazzling serpentine ribbon of sand only visible at low tide and easily reached by bangka from Yumbing.

The views and the water are gorgeous, but there’s no shade, so make sure that you take lots of sunblock.

#9 Surf Cloud 9 (Tuason Point)

Sleep, eat, surf: that’s the mantra 2km further north from GL at Cloud 9, the world-renowned break at Tuason Point. On most days, from sunrise to sundown, you’ll find surfers in action: beach bums previously watched from the multi-storey wooden viewing pavilion in front of the break, and will no doubt do so again once it is rebuilt following its destruction in Typhoon Odette.

The peak surf season is September and October before things slow down at the end of the year; beginners will find the weaker surf in June and July more manageable.

Both Camiguin and Siargao have an array of different options, from quality hostels and identikit business hotels to luxurious beachside resorts. For an authentic night's kip, book a rural homestay. There are the best places to stay in Mindanao.

Cagayan de Oro and around

Full of identikit downtown hotels, cheapie business stays and some half-decent midrange options . The high-end hotels tend to be newer here.

Iligan and around

Kitschy complexes with pools and reliable national chains. There are decently priced, if unimaginative, hotels in and around Iligan. It’s unlikely to be the standout accommodation of your trip.

Camiguin Island

Most of the seaside accommodation in Camiguin is west of Mambajao on the beaches between the small towns of Bug-ong and Naasag. Resorts near the town of Agoho, a little west of Bug-ong, remain popular due to their easy access to White Island. East of Mambajao, around the village of Balgabon, you’ll find more resorts, although the beach here isn’t as good as at Agoho, Yumbing or Naasag.

Surigao City

There's a bit of luxury here with the Almont which offers good rooms with sensational views of the bay. Else it's smart modern business hotels, a couple of boutique options, and some okay B&Bs.

Siargao Island

Siargao accommodation ranges from low-budget surf lodges to upmarket tropical resorts. Most places are a short distance from GL or Cloud 9, and the best can help arrange motorbike rentals, bangka trips and all kinds of tours.

From the gleaming, multi-storey hotels to 1950s-era heritage houses, Davao has the lot. There are some great upmarket hotels here as well as value-for-money a/c backpacker dorms in hostels.

Away from the cities, expect to have decent pizzas, curries, burgers and the like served at your resort. In Davao and Cagayan de Oro, though, there are endless opportunities to eat out.

Cagayan de Oro

Head to the Rosario Arcade or the Ayala Centrio Mall for a vast selection of restaurants and takeaway food. As well as Filipino classics, there are numerous Western outlets in the city too.

Eating on Camiguin is mostly limited to the resorts, but a few new standout restaurants have opened in recent years. Like everywhere else in the Philippines, there’s an inexplicable number of Italian pizzerias and restaurants, while in Mambajao, there’s a cluster of cheap places to eat around the market area.

Burgers, pizzas, curries and seafood are all available throughout this busy city with the best food generally serve on the seafront. There are some great places to try Filipino food too.

Most of the best places to eat and drink are in the resorts, but a number of independent places have opened over the past few years. Everywhere is lively during peak season, particularly during the Surfing Cup, when various places on Cloud 9 put on live music.

Davao’s best restaurants are scattered all over the city, but the safest bet for a cheap meal are the food courts located in or around the shopping malls. Durian fruit is a big deal in Davao, and is available in every form, from durian ice cream to durian-flavoured cappuccino. The best season for the fruit is Sept–Dec.

Guerrera, Camiguin The street-food craze has reached Camiguin, and the location of this first-rate restaurant, set beside a beautiful rice paddy and organic garden, instantly transports you to rural Vietnam or Laos. Dishes such as pad thai, Vietnamese noodle salads and bánh xèo (savoury crispy pancakes) are all knockouts.

The best way to get to Mindanao is by flying into Cagayan de Oro, which has domestic and international flights.

Laguindingan International Airport is 33km northwest of Cagayan de Oro – about an hour’s drive. The airport is accessible by jeepney (first to the Laguindingan turnoff, then take the shuttle to the airport), but the most convenient transfers are with LAX Shuttle, which picks up at the Centrio Ayala Mall, or with Magnum Express, which leaves from Magnum Radio in CM Recto.

The Eastbound bus terminal is near the Limketkai Center, 3km east of the centre (off Recto Ave), while the Westbound Bus and Jeepney Station lie 6km west of the centre on the Iligan road.

Find out the best way to get to the Philippines .

If you want to explore the entire island, you may need several weeks in Mindanao, or even a month. However, if you have limited time, it's possible to experience some of the highlights in around two weeks.

This would include Davao, tackling Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, and stopping in at the Philippine Eagle Center. It would also mean surfing and sunbathing in Siargao Island, seeing the waterfalls, hot springs, and historical landmarks of Camiguin and going white-water rafting in Bukidnon.

Most locals use tricycles in the larger cities, but there are a number of ways to get around Mindanao, which are affordable and easy. Note that choices for getting around Siargao are fairly limited.

By tricycle

Most locals use tricycles to get around the cities like C AND D (6am–10pm). Tricycles will often quote high charges to tourists.

Jeepneys are easy to pick up and typically run back and forth along all major thoroughfares in cities with their destinations pasted on the side – it’s just a question of flagging one down and hopping on.

A/C taxis can take you around town or on tours to most local sights. There are also non-a/c “PU” taxis which run fixed routes for a set rate. They are both cheap and easy to use. Hail them in the street and check the meter is turned on.

By habal-habal

Most locals use the habal-habals, good for up to two people and light luggage; the vehicles are customized with retro-fitted carry racks for long- and shortboards. Rates are fixed, so you shouldn’t need to negotiate.

By motorbike rental

If you intend to do a lot of roaming around, having your own wheels is definitely recommended. Ask your accommodation about renting a motorcycle.

The best time to visit Mindanao is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During these months, the weather is generally warm and sunny, making it an ideal time for beach activities, hiking, and other outdoor adventures. However, it's worth noting that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.

The months of May to November mark the rainy season in Mindanao, and while the rainfall may not be constant throughout these months, it's best to avoid visiting during this time. The wet season can lead to landslides and flooding, making it difficult to travel around and enjoy the island's attractions fully.

Overall, the best time to visit Mindanao is during the dry season from December to April. However, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly trip with fewer crowds, visiting during the shoulder season months of May and November can still offer a great experience with the added bonus of lush, green landscapes.

The Best Ecotourism Experiences in Mindanao, Philippines

Wild dolphins underwater

Mindanao may not be the most popular travel destination in the Philippines, but it’s home to some amazing natural hidden gems. Because its attractions are rarely visited by tourists, this spectacular region has been able to preserve its majestic beauty.

These days, Mindanao is slowly gaining global attention for its promising destinations. The region hopes to captivate the hearts of adventure-seekers and promote sustainable tourism through its wondrous ecotourism spots.

Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park

If interacting with diverse marine life excites you, then definitely visit Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP). It’s home to a number of marine mammals, fish hatcheries and the ever-popular Dolphin Island. This man-made sanctuary was built as a shelter for lost or stranded dolphins, where handlers take care of these creatures until they regain their health – then send them back into the open sea. Apart from interacting and swimming with the dolphins, you can also go snorkelling, explore their mangrove forests, or enjoy the sea breeze at MOAP’s beach resort.

Siargao Island

Head down south and discover why Siargao Island has become one of the world’s top surfing destinations. This teardrop-shaped island is surrounded with fine white sand shores, stunning coral reefs and barrelling waves that will test even the most seasoned surfer’s skills. You can also go island hopping, jump from the rocks of Magpupungko Rock Pool, explore Tayangban Cave or dine at a variety of world-class restaurants. Lake Mainit

Sitting almost equidistant between Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Sur provinces, you’ll find the country’s fourth largest freshwater lake. Lake Mainit, one of the deepest lakes in the country, has highly diverse aquatic resources and rich flora and fauna. It’s home to a variety of fish species, including the rare puyo or perch. Although the lake’s name literally means ‘hot’, it’s unspoiled warm waters are surrounded by numerous hot and cold springs. If you’re looking for an adventure that also provides relaxation, you’ll surely enjoy exploring this peaceful and undeniably scenic place.

Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary

Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the country’s most ecologically significant wetlands. Being the largest wetland in the Philippines, it is a majestically beautiful crossroads where lush vegetation, fresh water and wildlife interact. It’s almost as large as Manila, yet offers visitors a peek into the simple life. Here you can observe rare bird species in transit, nesting sites, and natural bonsai trees. If you’re hoping to explore the area, just be careful as some of its untouched sites serve as breeding ground for crocodiles. This habitat was the previous home of Lolong, once the country’s once largest saltwater crocodile.

Mabua Pebble Beach

If you thought beautiful beaches were all about pristine white sand shores, you’ll reconsider that idea after seeing Mabua Pebble Beach. Located in Surigao City, this beach won’t let you sink your feet into fine white sand. In fact, not a single grain of sand can be found in this area! Rather, you will catch sight of a one kilometer-long stretch of smooth pebbles that come in different shapes and sizes. Walking barefoot on these pebbled-shores is considered therapeutic, as our feet have reflex points connected to our internal organs. This makes this beach escape a refreshing treat for both mind and body.

Mount Apo Natural Park

Mount Apo Natural Park is one of the country’s highly-prioritized protected areas and most important heritage sites. This is because it primarily serves as sanctuary for countless wildlife species, including endangered animals such as the Philippine Eagle , Philippine Deer and over 600 species dwelling in the area. It is also home to two mountains, namely Mount Talomo and Mount Apo — the country’s highest peak. This majestic forest is a rich pool of natural resources set to benefit future generations of Filipinos.

Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary

The Philippines has only six UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of them can be found on the island of Mindanao . Boasting land and sea ecosystems at various elevations, it’s no wonder Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary made the list. It’s estimated to have 1,400 different species of plants and animals, including the Philippine Tarsier and the world’s smallest dragonfly — the Scarlet Dwarf (Nannophya pygmaea). Within the sanctuary, you’ll also find the natural wonders of Tinagong Dagat (Hidden Sea) and Twin Falls — both features that never fail to enthrall mountain climbers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Apart from serving as an entry point to the peak of Mount Apo, the once humble village has become home to the longest zip line in Asia – about 2.3 kilometers! Divided into two parts, the thrilling ride lets you pass through the New Israel community and back. Be observant of your surroundings too, as Philippine long-tailed Macaque monkeys freely roam around the area at certain times of day.

Pujada Bay Landscape and Seascape

The Pujada Bay Landscape and Seascape (simply called Pujada Bay) is a marine protected area located in Mati, Davao Oriental. It’s famously known for stretches of white powdery sand and a rich coral reef, home to 25 genera of hard and soft corals. Facing the Pacific Ocean, several streams and rivers flow into the u-shaped bay and mangroves line up its shores. It is a major tourist spot for swimming, kayaking and other water sport activities. Beneath the crystal clear waters, there lies its greatest attraction — the sea creatures. You can catch sight of dolphins, whale sharks, or the sea cows, locally known as dugong.

Often referred to by locals as the south’s Crown Jewel, Lake Holon is a secluded area that lets you reconnect with nature peacefully. Here you’ll be able to go camping, swimming, or enjoy a fish spa on the lake. There’s also the ATV adventure and water sports like kayaking. As the lake is actually the crater of Mount Parker (Mount Melibingoy), expect that the hike to this majestic beauty won’t be easy. It’s estimated to take beginners three to four hours to reach the peak, whereas advanced hikers who want a bit of challenge must endure a five to six hour trail. Nonetheless, the pristine waters, lush greens and breathtaking landscape is a rewarding treat for adventure junkies.

Amidst all the travel advisories about Mindanao, the island is a splendid place to visit. It is still safe to travel to Mindanao. Just don’t go to conflict-stricken areas, and you would be alright. So when you’ve got a chance to travel, put Northern Mindanao on your itinerary.

Region 10 or Northern Mindanao, is composed of 5 provinces: Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon, Camiguin and Lanao del Norte. Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog, El Salvador, Ozamiz, Tangub, Oroquieta, Malaybalay, Valencia, and Iligan are the cities in the Northern Mindanao Region.

Geologically, this region is characterized by plains, rolling hills, and mountains. Rich soil, abundant minerals, and agricultural resources are found in the coastal areas.

Northern Mindanao has a strategic location which is why it serves as the gateway to and from the rest of Mindanao. Its modern port facilities and extensive road networks linking it to various parts of the Mindanao region makes it an ideal destination for tourism all year round.

Moreover, it also has abundant water resources which led to the development of hydroelectric power plants in the area. These plants generate the bulk of power available in the Mindanao grid.

Everywhere in the Philippines, you would find people who know English so you can get around easily. However, the primary ethnic languages spoken in Northern Mindanao are Bisaya, Boholano, and Cebuano. You can meet people speaking native dialects in some areas like Higaonon in Misamis Oriental, Subanen in Misamis Occidental, Binukid in Bukidnon, and Kinamiging in Camiguin.

One of the most popular festivals in the region is the Higalaay Festival in Cagayan de Oro City. The festival is to celebrate the feast day of St. Augustine. It occurs every 28th day of August.

Another festival is Kaamulan festival in Bukidnon. It is an ethnic cultural festival wherein people allocate a relative amount of their time to remember the culture and traditions of the seven ethnic tribes in their area. It is also considered as a thanksgiving festival to celebrate their bountiful harvest.

Yet another famous festival in the region is the Lanzones festival in Camiguin , which is a 4-day celebration of this fruit. It is held every 3rd week of October. It is essential to note that the sweetest Lanzones can be found in the islands of Camiguin.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

mindanao travel destinations

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

mindanao travel destinations

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

mindanao travel destinations

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
