By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

The long run is coming to an end as the Eagles have announced the first set of arenas for The Long Goodbye “official farewell tour ,” beginning in September.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” the band said in a statement Thursday.

“Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

While only one show is listed per venue, the band “will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands.”

“The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round,” the Eagles added.

“So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades.”

Steely Dan will serve as the opening act on the Long Goodbye, which is expected to continue into 2025. Presale tickets for all announced shows go on sale beginning Wednesday, July 12, with a general on-sale to follow on July 14th .

LOS ANGELES , July 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — After more than 50 years of touring, and consistently selling out arenas and stadiums worldwide, the Eagles announced today that their upcoming “The Long Goodbye”  will be the band’s final tour.

Thirteen shows will be initially announced. The first set of dates will begin September 7, 2023 , in New York .

The Eagles’ long-time contemporaries and fellow Hall of Famers, Steely Dan,  will be joining these historic shows and commemorating their own 50+ year career.

Presale tickets and VIP packages will be available starting Wednesday, July 12 for all announced shows. The general on-sale will start Friday, July 14 at 10:00 AM local time.

During “The Long Goodbye,” the Eagles – Don Henley , Joe Walsh , Timothy B. Schmit , with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands. The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

Over the band’s more than 50 years of touring, the Eagles have performed more than 1,000 concerts around the world, accounting for more than 15 million tickets. Eagles’ tours have consistently ranked in the Top 10 of both concert industry publications, Billboard and Pollstar .

In the Fall of 1971, the Eagles formed, pioneered, and personified a uniquely American musical style blending country, folk, R&B, rock, and pop sensibilities, and would go onto become one of the most creatively and commercially successful bands of all time.  In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons.

The Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums, and topped the singles charts five times. They earned six GRAMMY Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their very first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The band’s Greatest Hits 1971-1977 is the best-selling album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.  Hotel California is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum.  After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and earned two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid In Town” and “Hotel California.”

The Eagles are ready to fly one last time, soaring for a farewell tour this fall to cap off their five decades of touring.

“We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

However, no California dates have yet been announced.

The Eagles Announce 'The Long Goodbye' Final Tour: 'The Time Has Come to Close the Circle'

The band's last ever tour begins on Sept. 7 in New York City

The Eagles are soaring one final time!

On Thursday, the band announced that after more than 50 years of touring and 150 million albums sold worldwide, their upcoming “The Long Goodbye” tour will be their last.

“Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages,” the band said in an emotional statement.

"The Long Goodbye" tour will feature Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill and Deacon Frey — son of the late Glenn Frey , one of the founding members of the band — and begins on Sept. 7, 2023, in New York City.

The band said they hoped to see as many fans as possible on the final tour and announced 13 initial dates across America, along with support act Steely Dan .

In their announcement, the band also noted the long, and at times challenging, journey since they formed in 1972.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” they said, adding thanks to their management team, road crew and backup musicians.

Deacon, 30, rejoins The Eagles for the final tour after it was announced last year that he was leaving the band after 4 and a half years to “forge his own path.” He initially joined the band in 2017 after his father Glenn died in 2016 at 67 years old.

During an illustrious career spanning more than five decades and six No. 1 albums, the band's 1976 album “Hotel California” and its eponymous title track remain their most well-known and well-loved music. “Every band has a peak, and that was ours,” drummer and vocalist Henley told Rolling Stone in 2016 .

Despite winning two Grammy awards, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and receiving the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016, the band made it clear that, for them, it’s all about the fans.

“We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades," they said in their release.

“This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”  Presale tickets and VIP packages for 'The Long Goodbye' are available from July 12 for all announced shows. General ticket sales open Friday, July 14 at 10 a.m.

The Eagles are saying a lot of farewells on their Long Goodbye Final Tour — not just to life on the road, but also to the countless friends they’ve lost along the way.

Eagles Add 6 More Dates to The Long Goodbye Tour: Here’s How to Score Tickets

Trending on billboard.

Throughout their 21-song set, the Eagles sprinkled in tributes to peers they’ve lost, including bandmates Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner. Of course, Frey died back in 2016, and his son Deacon Frey, now 31, has been filling in for his late dad (alongside Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill) in the band since their Classic West performance at Dodger Stadium in 2017 . Founding member Meisner — who left the band after 1976’s Hotel California album — died this past summer , so this is the band’s first tour since.

“We’re going to dedicate this to the memory of Mr. Randy Meisner,” Henley said to introduce “Take It to the Limit,” which was the band’s only single to feature the bassist on lead vocals and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976 and spent 23 weeks on the chart — their longest-charting hit on the tally. “Sing it with him,” Henley implored, as Gill took over on Meisner’s sky-high vocals.

Frey tributes were sprinkled throughout the night — basically any time Deacon and Gill took the lead on his signature songs — and after the mellow “Peaceful Easy Feeling” wrapped up, Glenn’s picture appeared on the big screen.

Steely Dan served as the opening act, doing a robust 12-song set and remembering some friends of their own, with lead singer Donald Fagen making sure to shout out his band co-founder Walter Becker, who died in 2017 .

The Long Goodbye Final Tour picks back up Tuesday at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, Calif., and wraps up March 16 at Charlotte, N.C.’s Spectrum Center.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 07: Vince Gill, Timothy B. Schmit, Don Henley, Deacon Frey and Joe Walsh perform at Madison Square Garden on September 07, 2023 in New York City. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for The Eagles)

Like the mournful dawn that crosses the sky during the Eagles ’ 1973 mellow, moody “Tequila Sunrise,” a goodbye is always imminent. With that, after nearly six decades of countrified ballads, California sun-kissed soft rockers and harmony-driven pop tunes, co-founding drummer Don Henley , longtime members Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, and latter-day guitarists Vince Gill and Deacon Frey (jointly subbing for late cofounder Glenn Frey) have decided to call it a day.

Popular on Variety

Starting their tight, two-hour-plus show lined up and bathed by stark white light, the Eagles’ vocalists (including longtime touring guitarist Steuart Smith, the evening’s MVP) harmonized in pristine unison to the righteous, folky “Seven Bridges Road” before Deacon Frey took center stage for “Take It Easy.” Looking even more like his old man, circa 1972 – porn stache, wavy hair – young Frey emulated dad’s buttery, high-plains-via-Michigan baritone to perfection, and did so again, later in the show, to the two-stepping victory song “Already Gone” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling.”

Whether acting as genial host (“hush,” he said, gently, to the noisiest of fans) or singing in a flawless falsetto, Henley was the model of Texan gentlemanly perfection. It was as if his arc-angelic vocals were dipped in honey as he crooned through the grooving pulse and cross-cutting guitars of “One of These Nights,” the wispy menace of “Witchy Woman” and the showy, honky-tonk balladry of “Desperado.” So precise was Henley’s lead voice’s crystalline tone at age 76 – to say nothing of his harmonies behind Schmit, Gill, Frey and Walsh – that you can’t imagine him stopping while so clearly on top of his game.

Gill is still a godsend to the Eagles, having joined with Henley and company after Glenn Frey’s death. While beloved as a guitarist and for his role as part of the legendary Pure Prairie League, Gill’s time as an Eagle has been filled with finding the soul of Frey’s roaming country heart, as defined at MSG with his takes on the shushing acoustic “Take it to the Limit,” a brushed-denim “Lyin’ Eyes” and the hopelessly romantic “New Kid in Town,” complete with its gentle Mexicali twitches. Though Gill got out a few awesome licks, so much of the winsome, high lonesome, manic, magic guitar work during Thursday’s show came down to Smith – the forever touring Eagles member who played as part of Rodney Crowell’s band, Cicadas – whose every lick was wiry, bold and inventive. Though his mastery of the slow finger slide on songs such as “Best of My Love” was impeccable, Smith made the old school double neck guitar that filled the ringing “Hotel California” look as good as it sounded.

Which leaves us with Joe Walsh. Since 1975, the manic, good-natured wild card of the Eagles has been its most vivacious showman – mugging, shuffling, bark-singing. For that, Walsh got the lion’s share of the standing applause and whoops-and-hollers of the MSG crowd for… well, frankly just being Joe Walsh. That meant playing crisply psychedelic, fuzzily rhythmic and slippery slide solos on big-beating cuts such as “Heartache Tonight,” joining in with Smith on the guitar-army tone of “Hotel California,” and singing his way through marvelous Eagles moments (a heartily harmonious “In the City”) as well as soulful career highlights such as the jiving “Life’s Been Good” and the snorting “Funk #49,” talk-box-bit and all.

With a first show so tasty and memorably laden with hit after hit – and this doesn’t even touch on the oddly complementary rhythm and blues jazz of Donald Fagen’s Steely Dan – the Eagles’ farewell easily competes with the likes of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé for tour of the year.

The Eagles Long Goodbye: See the setlist for the legendary rock band's final tour

when was eagles farewell tour

It will be a long goodbye for the Eagles, who announced their final tour in July and vow to stay on the road through 2025 - or until they hit every market that might welcome them, sometimes more than once.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers kicked off their farewell at New York's Madison Square Garden Sept. 7 with a 23-song setlist that spotlights their myriad hits – "Take it Easy," "Witchy Woman," "Tequila Sunrise," "Life in the Fast Lane" and of course, "Hotel California" among them – and also paid tribute to "dear friend" Jimmy Buffett, who died Sept. 1 , and original Eagles bassist Randy Meisner, who died in July.

As on past tours, the core of Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh are joined by upper-register maestro Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of the late Eagles legend Glenn Frey. The additional four musicians backing the Eagles augment an already pristine sound for this two-hour hits parade.

Rocking and reflective: Eagles pay tribute to Jimmy Buffett at final tour kickoff: 'Sailing on that cosmic ocean'

Eagles rock LA homecoming for Long Goodbye tour, knock nearby 'spaceship' SoFi Stadium

L OS ANGELES – "Good evening and welcome to whatever this is," Eagles founding member, drummer and singer Don Henley said to kick off the band's first 2024 concert of The Long Goodbye tour.

The seminal rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1971, checked into Hotel California again Friday for the first of four sold-out concerts at the Kia Forum for what is promised as the Eagles' final tour. Henley took pride that the four nights ending Jan. 13 will mark 26 times at the iconic 17,500-seat venue.

"We've been playing this joint for 49 years," Henley said, adding that it was the band's strong preference over the gleaming 70,000-seat SoFi Stadium just across the street.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"We could have just done one night at the spaceship next door and been done with it. But it sounds much better in here," said Henley, sending the Kia Forum crowd into a frenzy. "We prefer to work a little harder and give you a better listening experience."

The Eagles lived up to the great listening experience with Henley, 76, joining longtime guitarist Joe Walsh, 76, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, 76, along with guitarist Vince Gill , 66, who stepped in after founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey  died in 2016 at age 67. Frey's guitarist son Deacon, 31, has also rejoined the band.

Dropping into an acapella version of " Seven Bridges Road " to start the show, the Eagles proved they can still harmonize with startling beauty, following that up with hit-after-hit including "One of These Nights," "Lyin' Eyes," "Best of My Love" and "New Kid in Town."

The Eagles Long Goodbye: See the setlist for the legendary rock band's final tour

Songwriter J.D. Souther, who Henley said played a "critical role" in writing the latter two mega-Eagles hits, among others, made frequent stage appearances, including handling lead vocals in "New Kid in Town," duties once performed by the late Frey.

Deacon Frey, propped up sunglasses holding back his long black hair, handled his father's lead vocal duties on "Peaceful Easy Feeling," a pitch-perfect nostalgic rendition that ended with the stage screens showing a black-and-white photo of the smiling late Eagles founder.

Henley continued to pay concert tribute to Jimmy Buffett , dedicating his solo song "Boys of Summer" to "our dear friend" who died in September at 76.

Walsh held claim to his place as the Clown Prince of Rock by vamping onstage after a retro introduction from Schmidt as "the irreplaceable, the undeniable, the Master of the Stratocaster." Walsh proved worthy of the plaudits, pulling off power guitar solos in songs such as his hit "Life's Been Good."

But Walsh has slightly adapted to the times, changing the line in his ode to spoiled rock stars from "They write me letters, tell me I'm great" to "They write me emails, tell me I'm great."

By the time the band kicked into the classic road anthem "Already Gone," it was clear the Eagles are in fighting shape after performing the tour since kicking off Sept. 7 at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

"How we doing?" Henley asked after the song ended. "We've been practicing."

As promised in the title, The Long Goodbye will continue through 2025.

How is Donald Fagen from Steely Dan?

Fagen, 75, rejoined The Long Goodbye and opened the show Friday with Steely Dan after being hospitalized for an unspecified illness in October. Fagen thanked the audience for the enthusiastic response to Steely Dan's classic song "My Old School."

"It's my first show of the year, and you're making it nice," Fagen said.

After playing "Reelin' In the Years," Fagen paid tribute to fellow band founder Walter Becker, who died in 2017 at 67.

"I want to thank Walter Becker for helping me write all of these tunes," said Fagen.

Vince Gill Reveals What He Plans to Do After The Eagles Disband

by Clayton Edwards May 16, 2024, 7:25 am

Vince Gill has had a long and successful career. He started playing in small bluegrass bands in the early 70s. Later, he was in Pure Prairie League before playing in Rodney Crowell’s band. Then, he launched his solo career. In 2017, Gill took the late Glenn Frey’s place in the Eagles. Currently, the iconic classic rock band is on their farewell tour. When the trek wraps, the band will call it quits. However, Gill plans to keep going after his current bandmates hang it up.

Videos by American Songwriter

Recently, Gill sat down with Guitar World to discuss his time with the Eagles. During the conversation, he talked about playing guitar alongside Joe Walsh, the importance of restraint, and what he plans to do in the future.

Vince Gill Looks to His Post-Eagles Future

“With the Eagles winding down, what’s next for you,” the publication asked. Vince Gill revealed that he already has plans in place.

“I’m always working on new music and another record,” he said. “There’s always some sort of song I’ve got going, and over the last few years, I’ve written well over 100 songs,” he added. “When things were shut down during the pandemic, and no one was doing anything, I found that to be a great time for creativity.”

Gill went on to reveal that he will likely be ready to release a new solo album in the near future. “Little by little, I’ve recorded a new batch of songs, so those will come. I love being creative—that will never change,” he said. “So, when the Eagles finally shut it down, I’ll go back to singing my hillbilly songs and playing my white [Fender Telecaster]. There’s some kind of magic in that. I can attest to that,” he added.

Being a member of the Eagles is only one thread in the massive and vividly colored tapestry that is Vince Gill’s career. When this thread comes to its natural end, he’ll take up another and continue making great music.

Eagles’ Fletcher Cox, 4-time All-Pro and Super Bowl champion, retires from NFL

PHILADELPHIA, PA - NOVEMBER 24: Fletcher Cox #91 of the Philadelphia Eagles walks off the field after the game against the Seattle Seahawks at Lincoln Financial Field on November 24, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Seahawks defeated the Eagles 17-9. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

Fletcher Cox , a four-time All-Pro and one of the NFL’s best defensive linemen of the past decade, has announced his retirement.

Cox, 33, played the entirety of his 12-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles . He helped the franchise win its only Super Bowl. His 70 sacks rank fifth all-time in team history.

In a social media post published Sunday afternoon, Cox recalled what was the fulfillment of “a lifelong dream” of playing in the NFL . He thanked the Eagles’ executives, his coaches, his family and teammates — including Jason Kelce . The six-time All-Pro center announced his retirement last week .

THANK YOU, PHILLY! pic.twitter.com/vJcyeCndUE — fletcher cox (@fcoxx_91) March 10, 2024

Cox now joins Kelce as two of the most storied legacies in the franchise’s history comes to an end.

“I gave everything I had to this team and to this city,” Cox wrote. “I don’t know what’s next for me. But I do know that I’m forever grateful for my time here in Philadelphia and with the Eagles organization.”

Cox, the No. 12 pick in the 2012 draft, recorded five sacks and three tackles for loss in his final season. His contract is set to expire as the free-agency cycle begins this week, and it wasn’t yet certain whether Cox would re-sign with Philadelphia or continue his career with another team. General manager Howie Roseman, addressing Kelce and Cox’s futures at the NFL Scouting Combine, said “you never want to see them wearing different colors.”

“If they want the opportunity to come back, we’d want to have the opportunity to bring them back,” Roseman said.

The Eagles now enter a new era along the defensive line. Roseman invested heavily into the defensive front and will deploy a succession plan that includes three first-round draft choices in the last two years. Jordan Davis (2022) and Jalen Carter (2023) will see their roles and snap counts increase at defensive tackle.

Nolan Smith , the No. 30 pick in 2023, is expected to emerge as a starter in 2024.

A franchise two years removed from its Super Bowl LVII appearance must return to championship contention with a roster that now leans on younger players for both production and leadership. But Brandon Graham , the team’s longest-tenured player, agreed to terms with Philadelphia on a one-year deal that permits a “farewell tour.” Cox thanked Graham on his retirement announcement, saying, “I can only hope I was able to have the same kind of impact on others that you had on me.”

“I will forever cherish the brotherhood,” Cox said. “We created memories that will last a lifetime.”
