You're planning a cruise holiday but have no clue how much it will cost or what to budget for. How much does a 7-day cruise cost per person?

Even if we restrict ourselves to a seven-night trip, the price might range from a few hundred dollars to more than $10,000. Not to mention other fees such as travel and activities in ports of call . Here is a rundown of what to consider to get an estimate of how much a cruise costs.

The cruise line influences the pricing

The cruise company you pick, like automobile manufacturers, may have a big influence on the cruise ticket you'll spend for a 7-night vacation. Norwegian Cruise Line , Carnival Cruise Line , and Royal Caribbean International will give an average pricing that should match most budgets.

These popular lines include affordable American cruise lines , which often offer extremely low rates but can see prices rise if you choose to sail in a more costly cabin. Naturally, major cruise lines don't include as much in their cruise tickets. They like to allow the traveler to choose whatever extras, such as alcoholic drinks, Wi-Fi, shore excursions , and so on, to purchase in addition to the cruise ticket. It's worth noting that cruise operators nearly usually charge for a double occupancy cruise cabin. Some ships provide studio cabins, but if you're traveling alone, expect to pay for a second passenger whether you have one or not.

How Much Is a Cruise for 7 Nights?

Most cruise lines charge between $400 and $4,000 for a 7-night Caribbean trip in a balcony stateroom. Remember that these cruise costs are only estimates, and that prices can vary greatly based on the cabin style, time of year, number of individuals in the room, as well as cabin placement. If you're not sure where to begin when it comes to selecting a cruise, CruiseBooking.com will be a great asset to work with during the cruise planning stage. A travel agency like CruiseBooking.com can not only assist you in selecting the correct cruise line, but they can also save you cash and even provide you with extra onboard amenities.

Premium and luxury cruise lines, such as Princess Cruises , Celestyal Cruises , Celebrity Cruises , and Holland America Line , will almost certainly charge more, but they frequently offer more in their cruise fare. Furthermore, you may be able to discover more opulent accommodations to pick from.

Image of a cruise, cabin, or stateroom

The average price of your 7-day cruise will be heavily influenced by whether you choose an inside cabin, a balcony, or a suite. Inside rooms are likely to be less expensive than balcony rooms, just as a tiny automobile is likely to be less expensive than a full-size sedan. Suites will raise the price even more.

On most ships, there are four types of cabins:

  • Room with an ocean view
  • Suite: Each ship may offer different levels of suites depending on the cruise line. Suites usually also include additional onboard amenities.

A balcony cabin is frequently the greatest bargain since it gives more living space and a separate veranda without breaking the bank for most individuals.

Time of cruise

  • When you choose to sail might also have an influence on finding the greatest bargains. Typically, lower pricing may be obtained during hurricane season, when there is less demand for a cruise.
  • Furthermore, cooler weather is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a decent deal. Shoulder season is at the beginning or conclusion of a cruise season when demand is low, generally due to less-than-ideal weather.
  • Higher rates frequently follow popular vacation seasons, such as summer or Christmas. Peak-season cruises are often more expensive than off-season cruises.

Consider the demand for that time of year and compare costs earlier and later in the season to determine whether you may save a lot of money.

Ports of departure

A picture of the port of Miami

It's no secret that cruise itineraries have several departure ports . When it comes to the Caribbean, Florida alone has six ports: Port of Miami, Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale), Tampa, and Port of Palm Beach. But we must not overlook cities outside of Florida, such as New Orleans, Alabama, Charleston, Galveston, and South Carolina. Cruises from departure locations with older ships are often less costly.

Our best advice is to engage with a professional travel agent to help you sort through all of your possibilities. There are so many variables to consider that a travel professional may assist in simplifying the process while avoiding errors along the way.

If the smallest amount you can afford for a 7-day cruise is just not feasible, you may always opt for a shorter trip to assist reduce the whole holiday cost.

Onboard spending on a cruise encompasses various expenses beyond the initial ticket price. These expenses are not included in a cruise cost:

  • Port Fees and Taxes: Often charged per cruiser, covering costs associated with port usage.
  • Ship Operations: Involves ship maintenance, fuel, payroll, and other operational expenses.
  • Dining: Specialty restaurants, beverages beyond basic offerings.
  • Activities: Excursions, spa services, fitness classes.
  • Shopping: Souvenirs, duty-free items.
  • Entertainment: Shows, casinos, onboard events.
  • Internet and Communication : Wi-Fi services.
  • Onboard Credit: Some cruise packages include onboard credit that passengers can use for various expenses during the cruise.
  • Cash Considerations: While many expenses are billed to the cabin, having some cash can be useful for tipping, small purchases in ports, or other personal preferences.

Gratuities on a cruise refer to the customary tips provided to cruise ship staff for their services. Typically charged per person daily, these gratuities cover various onboard services, including cabin steward, dining room staff, and other service personnel. The amounts vary but often range from $10 to $15 per person per day. Some cruise lines automatically add these gratuities to passengers' onboard accounts, while others allow guests to adjust or prepay them. Passengers must know the cruise line's gratuity policy and consider budgeting for these tips as part of the overall cost. Additionally, some luxury cruises may include gratuities in the upfront fare. Understanding and adhering to the cruise line's gratuity practices contribute to a positive and seamless cruise experience for passengers and crew members.

The average cruise cost for two people in 2024 can vary based on factors such as cruise line, duration, cabin type, and destination. As per the provided search results, the average price for a seven-day cruise is around $1,500 per person, totaling $3,000 for a couple. It's essential to note that this is a general estimate, and actual costs may differ.

Additionally, guests often spend extra on onboard expenses such as drinks, excursions, specialty dining, and gratuities. On average, guests may spend around $680 on these extras, adding $1,360 for a couple.

Factors influencing costs include:

  • The cruise line's reputation
  • The ship's amenities
  • The chosen cabin category (inside, oceanview, balcony, or suite)
  • The cruise itinerary

Luxury cruise lines and longer itineraries tend to have higher costs. It's advisable to check with specific cruise lines, travel agencies, or online platforms for the most accurate and up-to-date pricing based on individual preferences and requirements.

Other Fees & Extra Costs You Will Have To Pay For Before Setting Sail On a Cruise

When looking for all-inclusive best cruise deals , it's essential to consider various fees and extra costs that may arise before setting sail. Here are some common ones to keep in mind:

1. Cruise Fare: The cruise fare is the base cost of your ticket, which covers accommodation, meals, and most onboard activities. The fare varies based on the cruise line, ship, cabin type, and itinerary.

2. Port Taxes and Fees: These charges are levied by the ports and local authorities and are usually included in the overall cruise fare. They cover the use of port facilities and services.

3. Gratuities or Service Charges: Most cruise lines add an automatic daily gratuity or service charge to your onboard account. This fee is distributed among service staff, such as cabin stewards, waitstaff, and housekeeping. The amount can vary, but it is often around $10 to $15 per person per day.

4. Excursions: Shore excursions are organized activities and tours at each port of call. These can include guided city tours, water sports, cultural experiences, and more. Excursions typically have an additional cost and vary depending on the activity and destination.

5. Specialty Dining: While cruise ships offer complimentary dining options, some specialty restaurants or dining venues may have an extra fee. These specialty venues often offer gourmet cuisine or unique dining experiences, and the additional charges can range from a few dollars to a significant amount.

6. Beverages: Non-alcoholic beverages like water, coffee, and tea are usually included in the cruise fare. However, alcoholic beverages, soda, bottled water, specialty coffees, and other drinks often incur additional charges. Some cruise lines offer beverage packages that provide unlimited drinks for a fixed fee.

7. Spa and Salon Services: Cruise ships feature spas, salons, and fitness centers offering various services such as massages, facials, hair styling, and fitness classes. These services generally come at an extra cost, which can vary.

8. Wi-Fi and Internet Access: While some cruise lines offer limited complimentary internet access, faster or unlimited packages often involve an additional fee. The cost for internet access can vary based on the cruise line and the duration of your trip.

9. Onboard Activities and Entertainment: While many onboard activities are included in the cruise fare, some entertainment options may have additional fees. These include premium theater shows, casinos, specialty classes (e.g., art, dance, cooking), and sports activities like rock climbing or go-karting.

10. Onboard Shopping: Cruise ships have shops and boutiques to purchase clothing, accessories, souvenirs, and duty-free items. These purchases are not included in the cruise fare and will incur extra costs.

It's essential to review the specific details and terms your chosen cruise line provides to understand all potential fees and extra costs before embarking on your journey.

1. Book Early: Take advantage of early booking discounts and promotions. Cruise lines often offer reduced fares and added perks for booking in advance.

2. Be Flexible with Travel Dates: Consider traveling during the off-peak or shoulder seasons when prices are typically lower. Avoiding holidays and school vacation periods can help you secure better deals.

3. Research Multiple Cruise Lines: Compare prices, itineraries, and offerings from different cruise lines. Each company has its own pricing structure and promotions, so researching multiple options can help you find the best value for your money.

4. Opt for Inside Cabins or Lower Deck Rooms: Cabins with a view or balcony tend to be more expensive. Choosing an inside cabin or a room on a lower deck can significantly lower your overall cruise cost while still providing a comfortable place to rest.

5. Avoid Costly Excursions: While shore excursions can enhance your experience, they can also be expensive. Consider exploring ports of call independently or researching cheaper alternatives, such as local transportation or self-guided tours.

6. Set a Budget for Onboard Spending: Determine how much you're willing to spend on extras like specialty dining, beverages, spa services, and shopping. Having a budget in mind helps you avoid overspending and allows you to prioritize where you want to allocate your funds.

7. Take Advantage of Drink Packages: If you enjoy alcoholic or specialty beverages, consider purchasing a drink package . Cruise lines often offer packages that include unlimited drinks for a fixed price, which can be more cost-effective if you plan to indulge.

8. Bring Your Own Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Most cruise lines allow guests to bring a limited amount of non-alcoholic beverages onboard. Packing bottled water, soda, or juice can save you from purchasing these items at inflated prices on the ship.

9. Research Port Parking Options: If you're driving to the departure port, compare parking rates at different facilities. Some off-site parking lots near the port offer discounted rates and shuttle services, which can be more affordable than parking directly at the cruise terminal.

10. Monitor Onboard Expenses: Regularly check your onboard account to keep track of your spending. Reviewing your charges allows you to catch any billing errors and helps you stay within your budget.

Remember, saving money on a cruise doesn't mean compromising the overall experience. By being mindful of your expenses and making strategic choices, you can enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation while staying within your budget.

How to Choose a Cruise Itinerary

By Sue Bryant

Last updated: June 6th, 2024

How to choose a cruise - Caribbean

  • Find a Cruise

With so many incredible destinations and experiences to choose from, knowing how to choose a cruise isn’t always easy.

Dreaming of a glamorous island-hopping vacation? Try the Caribbean, Greece, or the South Pacific. Are you fascinated by history and other cultures? The Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Asia, or South America might be the place for you.

If you’re looking for a nature-inspired getaway, you’ll find it in Alaska, the Norwegian fjords, and New Zealand, where breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences are all part of the journey.

Whether your ideal getaway consists of lounging on pristine beaches, exploring UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or tasting some of the best food in the world, there’s a cruise itinerary that will satisfy your vacation needs.

Pick a Destination

Cruise itinerary - Grand Case Beach St Maarten

When it comes to choosing a cruise, the world is your oyster. Unlike hotels, cruise ships move and can get you to several exciting places in one vacation. Ships sail to some of the most remote corners of the Earth, affording passengers the opportunity to explore cultures and magnificent natural sights along the way. Each region has its own unique appeal.

The most popular cruising region for first-time cruisers is the sunny Caribbean , where the temperatures are warm. Year-round, you can dip your toes in powdery sand and clear blue sea when you’re not lounging under a palm tree, sipping a frosty rum drink, and listening to a steel band. Go for a few days, a week, or longer, and come back completely refreshed.

People snorkeling in Grand Cayman

Eastern Caribbean cruises and Western Caribbean cruises deliver you to islands where you might explore rainforests, go snorkeling to see colorful fish, or dive into local culture. The difference is which groups of islands you visit.

For instance, Eastern Caribbean itineraries typically bring you to St. Thomas and St. Maarten, while Western Caribbean itineraries include stops in Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

If you’re deciding between The Bahamas vs Bermuda , Bahamas sailings offer a short introduction to cruising, while Bermuda cruises typically lasts for seven to ten nights.

How to choose a cruise - Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

For a different type of experience, Alaska is a cruise destination where Mother Nature delivers wondrous sights. Look up at the huge blue walls of a glacier and hear a sound like thunder as a house-sized chunk of ice breaks off and crashes to the sea.

Your ship will pass through glorious natural areas where wildlife abounds, and you can get even closer with shore excursions like kayaking, deep-sea fishing, bear observation, and dogsledding on top of a glacier. In fascinating frontier towns, you’ll gain insight into Gold Rush history and Alaska Native culture.

Couple taking a picture inside Colosseum

If you have your vacation sights set on Europe, where the sunny Mediterranean is particularly popular with first-timers, you’ll find cruise ship itinerary choices abound, and you have easy access to several countries on one cruise vacation.

Perhaps your goal is posing like a gladiator at the Colosseum in Rome or viewing Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona. Maybe you want to follow the glamorous crowd to the French Riviera, with a stop in Monte Carlo and its famous casino.

Couple sightseeing in Mykonos

Maybe you’re dreaming of the Greek Islands , with ancient ruins from some of the world’s greatest civilizations and picture-perfect views in such dreamlike places as Mykonos and Santorini. Or you have your sights set on seeing some of the most breathtaking coastlines on earth on a one-week cruise to Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro.

In addition to Caribbean, Alaska, and Mediterranean cruises, there are other cruise itinerary choices perfectly suited for both novice cruises and repeaters. Explore the pink sands of Bermuda , try surfing and attend a luau on the islands of Hawaii, or learn some American history, eat lobster, and see leaves in their colorful fall display in New England and Canada.

People looking at a blue footed boobie in Galapagos

Nature lovers with an adventurous spirit will not want to miss hanging out with blue-footed boobies and sea lions in the Galapagos , a place where the animals seem as curious about humans as we are about them.

Couple sightseeing from Preikestolen Pulpit Rock in Norway

Or you may choose a cruise ship itinerary to explore beautiful cities in Scandinavia ; the fairytale-like landscapes of the Norwegian Fjords; the culinary scene and fascinating landmarks of Asia; Australia and New Zealand; ancient landmarks and modern cities in the Middle East; the British Isles (England, Ireland and Scotland); or the stunning scenery of South America.

Think About Your Vacation Type

As part of the exercise of figuring out how to pick a cruise, consider what sort of vacation you are looking for, as well as who you will be vacationing with.

Are you looking for a romantic getaway with your loved one, where you’ll hold hands on the beach, dance beneath a canopy of stars, and share intimate meals? You’ll want an itinerary that says romance to you. Think about your favorite romantic movie and put yourself in the script.

Family looking at Sagrada Familia

Family vacationers will want to consider what the kids would like to do. Are you looking for adventure? Will the kids be thrilled or bored seeing cultural attractions? Onboard kids’ programs, including for tweens and teens, will keep your progeny well entertained, but you’ll want to find a cruise ship itinerary that works for everyone in the family.

View inside Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Having said this, don’t be too quick to dismiss a cruise that’s heavy on culture if you’re traveling as a family. Many cities have fantastic museums, attractions, and antiquities that kids will love.

In Singapore , the Gardens by the Bay is great for families. Thailand’s floating markets and gleaming malls are a delight for teens.

Stockholm has the ABBA Museum and the Vasa Museum, both of which are very family-friendly. Dubrovnik is where a lot of scenes from a certain hit fantasy drama were shot. Naples has Pompeii, and Barcelona has the Ramblas and the atmospheric Gothic Quarter to explore.

Couple looking at the lush scenery of Mount Liamuiga

Adventures and active travelers will find a wealth of exciting shore excursion options on all cruise ship itineraries, but if you have your sights set on a particular activity—such as hiking on top of a glacier or volcanic mountain—you’ll want to choose your itinerary wisely.

Culture vultures should research what they want to do, see, taste, and experience, whether it be UNESCO World Heritage Sites, world-class museums and galleries, or gourmet dining experiences.

Match a Cruise to Your Mobility

How to choose a cruise - St. Kitts

Cruising is a wonderful vacation choice if you’re less mobile as it’s such an effortless way to travel from one destination to the next. But if you are a wheelchair user, or a little unsteady on your feet, there are considerations to bear in mind.

Port of Limassol, Cyprus

Limassol, Cyprus

If you plan to go ashore every day on your cruise, look for an itinerary with as few tender ports as possible. A tender port is where the ship drops anchor offshore and you are shuttled to the dock and back using the ship’s tenders, usually the lifeboats.

While these are comfortable and stable in themselves, it can be difficult getting on and off the lifeboat if you use a stick or are in a wheelchair, and the sea is a little choppy.

In some ports, you will always be alongside (cruise-speak for docked next to dry land). In Athens and Istanbul, for example, you will always be able to step straight off the ship onto the quayside.

How to choose a cruise - Santorini, Greece

Santorini, Greece

However, Santorini is always a tender port, and Mykonos usually is, too. In the Bahamas, Key West, Nassau, and Bimini are ports where you’ll be alongside, but Grand Cayman is a tender port.

If you’re unlikely to be disembarking the ship much, consider a destination where there will always be something to see. The Norwegian Fjords is a great example; you can sit on deck, gazing at tumbling waterfalls and green meadows as you sail each tranquil inlet, looking out for mountain goats and seals.

Celebrity ship in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska

Alaska is another prime example. The Inside Passage is wonderful for spotting whales and dolphins from the ship, and for most of your cruise, you’ll be sailing against a backdrop of dense forest, vast glaciers, and snow-covered mountains. Alaska is exceptionally well-equipped for cruising, too, and in most ports, you’ll be alongside.

No Passport? No Problem

Couple walking on a beach in Puerto Rico

You can leave the U.S. for exotic destinations even if you don’t have a passport thanks to closed-loop cruises . A closed-loop cruise is a cruise that departs from and returns to the same port, and visits places that share a common border with the United States. So Mexico and Canada are included, as well as several Caribbean islands.

As an example, you could choose a round-trip Alaska cruise from Seattle , or a sunny getaway from Fort Lauderdale to The Bahamas, and travel only with a government-approved ID.

Check Off Your Bucket List

View of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

You’ve made your travel bucket list, so now it’s time to find the itinerary that checks off the most destinations. This is where you’ll need to do your research.

Let’s say you want to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Michelangelo’s David, the medieval walls of Dubrovnik , and take a ride along the canals of Venice in a gondola.

Plenty of cruises combine Italy and Croatia, but you’ll need to pick one that overnights in Livorno, the jumping-off point for Florence and Pisa. This way, you can do Florence one day, for the Accademia gallery and Pisa for the Leaning Tower the next.

Gondola ride in Venice, Italy

Venice, Italy

As for Venice, the trick here is to pick an itinerary that starts or finishes in the beautiful old city of Ravenna . You can add a day to your vacation to spend more time in Venice.

This is a double win; you get your gondola ride and you’ll also be in the city after dark, when the day-trippers have left, and the atmosphere is magical.

View of Bangkok, Thailand at night

Bangkok, Thailand

Here’s another scenario. You want to go to Asia and experience the legendary nightlife of buzzing Bangkok. So when you’re researching your cruise, pick an itinerary that overnights in Laemchabang, the port for the Thai capital.

But don’t stress about finding a taxi to take you the 79-mile journey between the two in the middle of the night. Jump ship instead and take a mini-break from your vacation by spending the night in a hotel in the heart of the city. Do your homework and you’ll find that this is offered as an organized shore excursion, with the cruise line making all the arrangements.

Choose a Balanced Itinerary

Family eating tapas in Palma de Mallorca, Spain

There’s always the possibility that you’ll get carried away with excitement on your cruise and completely over-schedule your days.

This is especially true of Europe, where you’re likely to be packing in sightseeing as a new city reveals itself every day. It’s all too easy to end your vacation more exhausted than when you started it.

If you’re cruising with teens , you’ll want to bear in mind the likelihood of getting them out of bed for an 8.30 a.m. start every day, too.

So plan to mix up busy sightseeing days with beach days, or days simply wandering around a new city to explore. Figure out which ports lend themselves to a lazier day and which are essential for sightseeing.

Couple exploring Pompeii, Italy

Pompeii, Italy

From Naples , for example, you’ll most likely want to visit Pompeii. This is usually a half-day tour, so book it for the afternoon and relax on board during the morning. In Palma, Mallorca, you’ll have time to wander around the Gothic Quarter and also go to the beach.

Mykonos , too, allows you time for a half-day tour and then a long, lazy lunch in the waterfront taverna of your choice. Just don’t feel you have to fill every minute of every day.

Pick an Embarkation Port

How to choose a cruise - Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

In the U.S., cruises embark from ports like Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, and Tampa. Before you book a cruise, consider which embarkation port is located closest to you, and see which itineraries are available there.

If you don’t live near a departure port, consider adding a couple of days before or after your cruise to explore the city you embark from. Each has its own nearby world-class attractions, whether it’s Time Square in New York, Miami’s South Beach, or the high-end shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Colorful buildings in Amsterdam reflecting on water

In Europe, ships embark from port cities like Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, and Southampton, UK (about two hours from London). All are worth exploring pre- or post-cruise. On some one-way itineraries, you’ll have the opportunity to linger in two ports, such as Barcelona and Rome.

Consider Time of Year

Family petting Alaska dogs

When you cruise is a factor in your choice of itinerary. Some destinations, most notably Alaska, are accessible to cruise ships only in specific seasons. The Alaska cruise season is from May to September.

Do your research on the best time to go on a cruise . While the Caribbean is temperate year-round, the Mediterranean is most popular in spring, summer, and fall.

When looking at cruise ship itineraries, consider when it is you are planning to vacation and check the typical weather for the period you wish to cruise. You don’t want to head somewhere where the weather is cold if you’re thinking about beach time.

Couple at a cafe in St Mark's Square

You may also want to consider whether your timing is high season in the destination you plan to visit. For instance, there will be fewer crowds in St. Mark’s Square in Venice if you don’t visit in July and August. In fact, many places in southern Europe are better in the shoulder season, right up to late October, provided you don’t have your heart set on the beach.

In the Caribbean, summertime and holidays are popular with families, which is fine if you’re cruising with toddlers or older kids. If you are looking for more of an adult crowd, you may want to consider other time periods.

People looking at Galapagos tortoise

Galapagos tortoise

The Galapagos, for many the ultimate bucket list experience , is a year-round destination. There is relatively little variation between the seasons, as it’s close to the Equator. You’ll see different animals at different times of year, but the iguanas, sea lions, sharks, penguins, and giant tortoises are always present.

Find Out What’s Going on in Your Destination

View of Sensoji Temple in Tokyo Japan

We tend to choose vacations based on our own availability. But think about what will be going on when you arrive in your chosen cruising area. If you want to see the famous cherry blossom in Japan , for example, you’ll need to travel in March or April.

July is the best time to see and smell the glorious purple lavender fields of Provence . For whale-watching in Iceland, June, July, and August is the peak season.

White sand beach in Aruba

For fall foliage cruises , time your leaf-peeping in New England for late September. In the Caribbean, if you’re restricted by school vacations to July and August, then head south to the ABC Islands, which tend to be dry and sunny year-round.

In Europe, especially in France and Italy where a lot of people like to vacation in their own country rather than going abroad, there’s a mass exodus to the beaches in August. So there will be a lively buzz wherever you go, but it will be busy. Pick July or September if you prefer to avoid crowds.

Decide How Long You Want to Cruise

Cruise itinerary - Jobson's Cove, Bermuda

Many cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Bermuda are seven nights long, and there are great one-week options in Europe and elsewhere as well. If you can’t take a whole week off for your cruise vacation, there are plenty of itineraries for less than a week—as well as for more than a week.

Family swimming with stingrays in Grand Cayman

First-timers may want to test the waters with a refreshing weekend cruise to the Bahamas, with the opportunity to lounge on white-sand beaches and visit a world-class waterpark on nearby Paradise Island.

Choose long weekend cruises from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman that only last for four nights, where adventure activities include snorkeling with friendly stingrays.

Or head off for five nights to explore Mayan culture in Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico. There are short cruises in other parts of the Caribbean as well, and some visit Key West, where you can walk in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway and savor a slice of key lime pie.

Cruise itinerary - Bridge of the Americas, Panama Canal

Cruises of more than a week go farther afield, with plenty of time to explore new places and enjoy your ship’s onboard attractions. Longer cruises tend to draw more adults and fewer families and include exploration of the Caribbean as well as Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, South America, and Australia and New Zealand.

Or why not opt for the bliss of a much longer voyage, of two weeks or more? If you’re an experienced cruiser, perhaps you’ve always wanted to do an ocean crossing. Sail all the way across the mighty Atlantic, for example, and you’ll gain a whole new perspective on the sheer vastness of the ocean.

Cityscape of Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu, Hawaii

Or perhaps you like your ocean crossings to be tropical, in which case, why not sail between Hawaii and Sydney, Australia ? You’ll enjoy long, relaxed periods of crossing the warm Pacific, with calls at dreamy tropical islands to break the journey.

Evaluate Time at Sea and in Port

Couple sightseeing from Celebrity Flora Suite

An important factor when you’re working through the process of how to choose a cruise is the amount of time the ship spends in ports and how much time it’s at sea. It pays to look carefully at itineraries to compare.

Ask yourself if you want to wake up to gorgeous, uninterrupted views of the sea or the landscape of exciting cities ripe for exploring. Some itineraries are more destination-focused and may even visit a port of call each day. Others include days at sea, so you’ll have time to enjoy more of the ship’s onboard amenities.

Historic site of Parthenon in Athens, Greece

Parthenon in Athens, Greece

Some itineraries will spend a full day in a destination, and some include late-night or even overnight stays in port, which provides an opportunity for a deeper dive into the culture—perhaps a meal or nighttime entertainment ashore.

Experienced cruisers know, and first-timers quickly learn, days at sea are not to be feared but rather bring both exciting things to do on a cruise and uninterrupted time to relax. Head to the gym, visit the spa, read a book, attend a wine tasting or cooking class, play a game at the casino, take a nap, and otherwise enjoy your version of a perfect cruise vacation.

There’s no doubt that the choice can be bewildering if you’ve never been on a cruise or if you’re hoping to visit somewhere that’s completely new to you. So don’t forget that a good travel agent should already have the knowledge and expertise to help.

Pick an agent who specializes in cruising and who can demonstrate experience of the destination you’ve chosen. Give them a detailed brief, and if you like one another, put them to work.

Your specialist can book the cruise for you, as well as flights, any transfers, and pre- and post-cruise hotels. A good agent will also come up with alternative suggestions if they think you’d benefit from tweaking your plans.

How Much a Cruise Costs in 2024

Wondering how much you’ll spend to take a cruise? We have specific estimates (using actual figures from the cruise lines!) below.

Two ships in port of Cozumel

Before we get too far, however, you should know that just like buying a car, you can spend as much — or as little — as you want for your vacation .

For instance, are you happy with the lowest-cost interior cabin… or would you rather spend more for a balcony or a suite?

Or are you the sort of person who can only sail during the summer months (when prices are much higher), or can you sail during the off-season and save hundreds of dollars ?

From room types to when you sail to the cruise line you pick, they all have an impact on what you’ll spend.

That means tracking down the specific cost of a cruise for each person is difficult. But we can give you an idea of what a typical trip will cost based on averages and help you know better what you can plan to spend.

We get into all the details of how much a cruise costs — and exactly where you’ll spend money — below.

In This Article...

Where You’ll Spend Money on a Cruise

Think that the cost of a cruise is simply the fare that you pay to get on the ship? While that makes up the lion’s share of your spending, there’s a lot more that goes into the cost of your vacation.

Cruise Fare Of course, when most people think of the cost of a cruise, they are thinking mainly of the price of the cruise fare. This fare is what the cruise line charges for you to sail on the ship. Cruise fare includes your cabin, most meals, entertainment on the ship, access to pools, lounges, and more.

What it doesn’t include are the extras like alcoholic drinks, specialty restaurants, shore excursions, gambling and other things bought on board.

What you pay for your fare can vary widely. Factors that go into the price include the type of cabin you choose, length of cruise, when you sail, and even the ship and cruise line you sail.

Short cruises on budget cruise lines can run as little as a few hundred dollars, while long luxury trips can run well into the thousands — and even tens of thousands — of dollars per person.

Onboard Spending Think you’re done spending money after you buy your cruise fare? Think again. Once on the ship there are lots of extras that you will likely want to purchase that add to the cost of your cruise.

Onboard spending casts a wide net. It includes everything from money spent gambling in the casino to alcohol, specialty restaurants, cruise line shore excursions, and even the souvenirs you buy in the gift shop.

Ship keycard on top of cash money

Just like with the cruise fare, different people will spend different amounts. We’ve personally been on cruises and spent nothing extra on the ship. Other times we’ve spent hundreds.

If you’re frugal, you can get by with spending little. If you want to let loose and have fun, it will add hundreds (and maybe thousands) to your cruise fare. As a rule of thumb, expect to spend between 30-40% of your cruise fare in onboard spending. That’s around what the cruise companies show as the amount earned in onboard spending in their financial reports.

Gratuities If you’ve never sailed on a cruise before, you might be unsure of exactly what gratuities are and how they work.

These days gratuities are automatically charged to your account; everyone pays them. You can choose to prepay them when you buy your cruise, or have them charged to your onboard spending account and pay the balance at the end of your trip.

Rates vary across cruise lines, but are usually around $15 per person, per day. So a couple traveling on a seven-day cruise will pay about $200 in gratuities.

What do the charges go to? They are shared among the staff, with most going to your cabin steward. Waitstaff also receive a significant portion.  (For more on gratuities, see our complete guide here .)

Getting to the Ship (Transportation, Parking, Hotel) Whether you fly, ride, or drive to the port, you will have some more expenses that you have to consider for your budget.

one week cruise

Getting a ride to the port? Don’t forget to factor in the cost of transportation to get to and from the cruise ship.

Driving to the port? If so, know that most ports charge around $20 per day to park (although some hotels and independent parking lots offer discounted rates).

If you fly in for your cruise, then you need to factor in your airfare. We also suggest anyone flying in to arrive the day before you sail and get a hotel room, just to avoid any delays that might cause you to miss your ship.

Spending in Port Finally, the last part of your budget to consider is what you spend in port. Most of the time, this is actually relatively little as so much time is spent on the ship.

Excursions not booked through the cruise line would be in this section (those booked through the cruise line are onboard spending, mentioned above). Your port spending also includes things you do in port like catching a taxi to a beach, food and drink at a restaurant, or buying souvenirs.

One Note About Cruising in 2024

Of course the world has changed since the health crisis. Nowhere is that more the case than with cruising. The entire industry was shut down for almost all of 2020 and slowly made its return in 2021. After 2023, we can say that cruising is back with ships sailing at full capacity.

But just like on land, but there are bigger changes that could impact the cost of a cruise going forward.

Longer-Term Pricing During the stop, the major cruise companies took on massive amounts of debt to survive. Now as cruising resumes, they are focused on improving their balance sheets. That has meant higher pricing, if the market allows. Cruise lines have said repeatedly that demand is strong and onboard spending is at considerably higher levels than before the pause.

As well, several cruise lines sold off a number older, smaller ships. In general, older ships offer lower pricing. Along with the removal of older ships, new ships have come onto the market such as Carnival Celebration and Jubilee, as well as Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.

With more newer ships priced at a premium and a push to shore up balance sheets, longer term pricing seems likely to rise.

Inflation Pressures The biggest economic story of 2022 was inflation, and it didn’t stop at the water’s edge. It’s a worldwide issue that also impact cruise lines. Prices for many things, including services like wi-fi on cruise ships and gratuity charges have increased.

The good news is that following strong price increases since cruising returned, anecdotally it seems that the hikes have calmed for now. That said, don’t be surprised if prices still climb some in the coming year.

Average Total Cost of a Cruise in 2024

one week cruise

So with all these different things to spend money on, how much does it cost to take a cruise?

As we mentioned above, the cost of your specific cruise will vary. Those who want an interior cabin will spend less than those sailing a suite. And people who can sail during the spring or fall will save hundreds versus sailing in the summer.

But we have some estimates below to give you an idea of the cost of taking a cruise.

Cruise Fare ($150-$245 per day) Obviously it’s impossible to give you a specific cost of your cruise fare. There are so many different factors that go into what you’ll pay, including:

  • Cruise line
  • Specific ship
  • Date of cruise
  • Trip length

That means the price you pay will see a wide range . Sailings can be less than $100 per person, per day, into several hundreds of dollars each day.

That said, we can get a good idea of what you’ll spend. All the major cruise lines are public companies that publish annual figures for their revenue and passenger statistics.

From these public reports, we know that the average cost of cruise fare runs from about $150-$245 per person, per day (depending on cruise company).

For example, in the trailing 12 months (the latest data available publicly), Carnival Corporation — which owns several different lines including Carnival, Princess, Cunard, and others — took in $12.8 billion in ticket revenue, and sailed 86.0 million passenger days. That comes out to $149 per person, per day.

Royal Caribbean Group was slightly higher based on their last 12 months of financial reports, ($175 per person, per day), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. came in at the top of our list ($245 per person, per day).

Of course, those figures are averages across the entire company. Specific cruises can be much lower… or much higher… depending on your specifics. For example, sailing an interior cabin is drastically cheaper than sailing in a balcony room. And cruises departing in January or February are less expensive than sailing at the height of summer.

Still, these figures should give you a good idea of the average cost of a cruise based on what others pay across different cruise companies.

Port Fees and Taxes (~$100-$200 per person)

Port fees and taxes aren’t technically part of your cruise fare, but they are included in what you pay before you board.

So how much will you pay?

The amount varies depending on your specific route as different ports charge different fees. In our experience, for most cruises expect to spend between $100 and $200 per person on these fees and taxes. Some cruises with fewer ports will be less.

As a rule of thumb, the more ports of call, the higher these fees can be. On some cruises they can definitely be more than $200, but we’ve rarely seen them below $100 — except for some of the shortest trips with only one or two stops.

Onboard Spending (~$85-$120 per day) By far the biggest expense of taking a cruise is the fare, but onboard spending can be a considerable chunk of change.

So how much will you spend? We dove into detail about spending on a cruise ship before . Cruise lines also break down how much cruise passengers spend in their financial reports. On average across cruise lines, the amount comes out to between $85-120 per person, per day.

Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Group saw an average around $85 per person, per day in the last year. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. saw closer to $120 per person each day.

But you should know that this doesn’t mean you’ll be spending that much each day. With the accounting rules used by the cruise lines, sometimes money spent before you get on the ship is actually classified as “onboard and other” spending .

So if you buy a bundle package that includes your cruise fare and drink package, wi-fi, and other goodies (such as NCL’s “Free at Sea” offer) all in one transaction, some of that is considered onboard spending and some is the cruise fare.

As well, keep in mind that this is simply an average across all cruise passengers and major cruise lines. What you spend could be drastically different. For instance, some people spend little or no money on the ship. Others purchase drink packages, gamble in the casino, and generally live it up the entire trip.

In fact, onboard spending is the area where you have the most control over what you’ll spend .

Gratuities (~$16-20 per day) Yes, you can adjust the amount of gratuities if your service is particularly poor. In reality, not many people do. Expect to spend about $16-20 per person, per day.

Gratuities may be slightly higher or lower depending on the cruise line. As well, suites have higher gratuity rates compared to lower-tier cabins. So while you might pay $16 per day for a normal cabin, that amount might be $18 per day (or more) if staying in a suite.

Note that this amount doesn’t include gratuities charged for extras like alcoholic beverages on the ship. Those are extra in addition to the automatic gratuities charged to each passenger that go to the waitstaff and room steward.

Getting to the Ship/Parking/Hotel (Varies) The amount that it will cost you to get to the ship, park, and/or a hotel stay will vary based on your needs.

Some people just get dropped off at the port by a friend or family member, so it costs them nothing. Others have to book a cross-country flight and a hotel stay the night before.

If you drive to the port, plan to spend around $20 per day for parking, depending on the port. Hotels in most port cities can be found for between $150-250 per night. Rides to the port using services like a taxi or Uber/Lyft can vary considerably depending on where you are coming from. Still, you don’t want to forget these considerable expenses in cruising.

Spending in Port (~$50 per port) What you spend in port can vary widely. Remember anything you eat or drink off the ship will come out of pocket and isn’t included in your cruise fare. As well, things like taxis and souvenirs are also extra.

As a rule of thumb, we estimate a budget of about $50 per person, per port of call. For some ports that may be too much. For instance, cruise line private islands often have much of what you need already included. Other ports might include a stop at a restaurant, some souvenir shopping, and buying drinks.

Summing Up the Total Cost of a Cruise

So what’s the grand total?

The chart below lays out the costs of taking a cruise, using the estimated amounts mentioned above. We’ve also laid out the estimates for both a shorter cruise (five days) and the traditional seven-day trip.

Keep in mind that these are just estimates, per person . A couple would expect to double these prices.

As well, remember that what you spend will vary widely based on any number of factors , including your own budgeting for the trip and how much you let loose on your vacation.

Sailing in the off-season like January or February? Then your cruise fare can be considerably less than average. Are you a big spender on the ship? Then your vacation will obviously end up costing more.

But as you can see, on a per-person basis the cost for a 7-day cruise can run around $2,000 when you factor in everything you’ll spend. Shorter cruises will run around $1,500 .

Carnival Cruise Ship Grazes Iceberg While Sailing in Alaska, Causing Passenger Panic

A Carnival Cruise Line ship traveling through Tracy Arm Fjord , south of the city of Juneau, Alaska, struck a small iceberg last week. The waterway is known for its breathtaking views as well as floating pieces of ice, as passengers learned all too well.

Thankfully no one was injured in the collision and there were no damages to the ship, but video posted to social media captured the harrowing incident.

Cassandra Goskie, a passenger on the ship, posted video to TikTok of the accident that occurred last week on Sept. 5. "If we die it was damn well worth it ... it’s a Titanic moment," Goskie can be heard narrating the video, before letting out an exaggerated scream as the ship was seen plowing right through the floating chunk of ice.

"Oh, we are hitting it!" she exclaimed. "Damn!!"

"Carnival Spirit hit an iceberg. It didn't do any damage that caused us to use any emergency procedures," Goskie added in the video's caption. "The crew did an amazing job at accessing the damage and keep all of its crew and passengers safe and informed!"

Another passenger, Saurabh Singhal, posted his account of the collision to Facebook the following day.

"My wife and I have been on a cruise ship Carnival Spirit to Alaska since Sept. 3," Singhal wrote in the post. "Our ship hit an iceberg yesterday afternoon and the ship came to a complete halt for hours to assess damages. Luckily, there were no damages and we moved ahead to Skagway, AK."

In a statement to CNN Travel , a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line described the incident as the ship hitting "an errant piece of drifting ice."

“An assessment determined no damage to the ship’s hull and the vessel continued on its cruise and there has been no impact to operations," the spokesperson said. The vessel finished its seven-day Alaska cruise on Tuesday and safely returned to its port in Seattle, WA. It has since embarked on another 14-day round trip to Alaska.

The accident follows a push from locals to reduce the number of cruise ships passing through Juneau, concerned about effects of increased traffic from cruise ship tourism on small, coastal Alaska towns. A citizen's initiative was proposed back in July that would forbid cruise ships on Saturdays, which residents will vote on whether to enact in October.

"I know what Juneau used to be, and I know what it could be and it isn’t now, and so I’m fighting to bring some of that back," Karla Hart, a local proponent, told the Alaska Beacon . "Ship-free Saturdays is a way to just give everybody in Juneau one day a week without the blanket of impacts on our lives. And to me, I believe that if we all have that one day a week without all of the chaos that comes with the cruise industry, that we’ll all be happier and healthier."

Carnival cruise ship collides with iceberg

The Carnival Spirit cruise ship, photographed here sailing Alaska, recently collided with an iceberg near the city of Juneau. (Carnival Cruise Line via CNN Newsource)

The words “Titanic moment” are possibly the last thing you want to hear on a boat – but that was the phrase used by one passenger on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship last week, after the vessel unexpectedly struck an iceberg.

No one was hurt on board and the ship was undamaged by the incident, which a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson described as the vessel hitting “an errant piece of drifting ice.”

  • Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts and video on all the top stories

Carnival Spirit was sailing in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska, a waterway south of the city of Juneau known for its spectacular beauty – and pieces of floating ice.

Videos of the incident circulated on social media in the aftermath, as multiple passengers filmed the moment the ship collided with the iceberg.

Cassandra Goskie posted a video on TikTok in which a voice is heard saying: “If we die it was damn well worth it, it’s a Titanic moment,” just before the vessel struck the piece of ice.

Meanwhile passenger Saurabh Singhal described the vessel coming to a halt “for hours to assess damages” in a Facebook post.

“An assessment determined no damage to the ship’s hull and the vessel continued on its cruise and there has been no impact to operations,” the Carnival spokesperson told CNN Travel.

The Carnival Spirit finished its seven-day Alaska cruise on Tuesday without interruption, returning to Seattle, Washington. The vessel has since embarked on another round trip to Alaska, this time for 14 days.

In 2022, Norwegian Cruise Line vessel Norwegian Sun hit a piece of an iceberg while sailing in Alaska, sustaining damage to its starboard bow. There were no injuries.

Alaska is a popular cruise destination, but there’s reportedly been pushback in recent years from locals concerned about over congested waterways in the region.

Alaska’s waters are also known as some of the most challenging for cruise ships to navigate.

“That ice is hard and can damage the hull or propellers,” Captain John Herring, a marine pilot in southeast Alaska who boards ships in the region to help ensure safe passage, told CNN Travel in 2022.   “Strong winds and currents make navigating icy waters even harder.”

Despite these difficult conditions, “we very rarely – if ever – see any issues related to sailings in icy waters,” said cruise expert Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic, a review site and online cruise community.

“Today’s cruise ships are specifically built to sail a number of different waters,” Gray Faust told CNN Travel. “Those that sail in Alaska are not only able to withstand icy waters, they have experienced captains who are familiar with the landscape, which is why the incident being reported caused no issue to the ship or the sailing.”

Garrett Miller forces key turnover as Mead rallies past Lewis and Clark 30-16

Lewis and Clark free safety Mason Kershaw (2) tackles Mead running back James Fraham (#23) during the first half of a high school football game, Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, at Union Stadium. (Colin Mulvany/The Spokesman-Review)

Lewis and Clark free safety Mason Kershaw tackles Mead running back James Fraham during the first half Friday in Greater Spokane League play at Union Stadium.

Mead football coach Keith Stamps wasn’t sure how much his team improved from the first week to Friday.

The final score won’t show the battle in which the Panthers found themselves, trailing 16-6 early in the third quarter.

But Mead, fueled by its defense, scored 24 unanswered points to turn away the Lewis and Clark Tigers 30-16 in a Greater Spokane League game between 4A foes at Union Stadium.

Junior linebacker Garrett Miller came up with one of the key plays for Mead. With LC (1-1) facing second-and-goal at the 4-yard line, Miller chased quarterback Tyler Daniel, forcing a fumble as he sacked him, and Mead recovered at its 28.

Six plays later, Mead quarterback JJ Leman rolled left and threw a screen pass back right to running back Keegan Mallon, who scampered 33 yards into the end zone to give the Panthers (2-0) the lead for good at 20-16 with 8:37 remaining.

Mead’s defense struck again when Chase Pluid intercepted a pass to give the Panthers the ball at LC’s 23.

Moments later, Donovan Damiano extended the lead to a touchdown when he converted on a 26-yard kick with 5:34 to go.

Mead’s defense stepped up one more time, recovering a fumble at midfield.

Then on fourth-and-11, Leman hit Matt McShane, who got behind LC’s secondary for a 31-yard touchdown for the final points.

Leman and Miller hooked up earlier in the game on a 55-yard scoring play.

“I’m really proud of the way our defense hung in there tonight,” Stamps said. “Credit to (LC), they did a nice job. They hit a couple big plays on us. But our defense played really well.”

The turning point in the first half was opportunistic any way you look at it.

With Mead blitzing a linebacker, Lewis and Clark’s speedy running back Romin Saleki hit the empty hole, bouncing outside and up the sideline 78 yards for a go-ahead touchdown midway in the second quarter. The Tigers made the 10-6 lead stand going into halftime.

Mead’s offense was hit and miss in the first half. The Panthers rushed for 103 yards on 21 attempts, taking a 6-0 lead when quarterback JJ Leman dashed 11 yards untouched with 6:27 to go in the first period quarter.

LC cut the lead in half at 6-3 when Tyler Reed made a 22-yard field goal with 11:51 to go before halftime.

The Panthers were driving when Jimmy Frahm fumbled at the LC 12-yard line.

Two plays later, Saleki made the turnover hurt when he broke off the big play. He had 103 yards on five carries in the first half.

Mead bounced back in the second half.

“I thought there were some defense execution things that we did better (than last week),” Stamps said.

“Last week, we didn’t have the fumble issue. We put the ball on the ground a couple times. Those were huge in the first half. I think we can get in the locker room with 21 (points) on the board if we take care of the ball.”

From a toughness standpoint, Stamps was particularly pleased.

“I say this every chance I get, but this is a high-character group of kids that trust each other and believe in each other,” Stamps said. “There was no panic, there was no concern.”

Stamps praised Miller.

“He’s a high football IQ player,” Stamps said.

“Coach talked to us at halftime that we had to have the juice all game,” Miller said. “We trust in each other. It was great.”
