Excellent tour to wonderful places in Southern India. Very good guide.

South India Revealed Tour

South India Revealed

I give the tour guide an excellent review but the tour itself was only okay. We spent two days in places where we should have spent one day. Madurai, Thekkady, and Mysore were those places. We should have spent full two days and two nights in Hampi because there is so much to do. Some of the hotels were pretty bad and didn't have redeeming qualities. The hotel in Varkala was dirty but it was close to the beach. The one in Hampi was dirty but had the cool seating area and hammock things, so that was nice. The hotel in Mysore was disgusting, filthy, and had zero redeeming qualities. Overall, I thought the pacing was a bit off, so realistically I wouldn't recommend the tour to my best friends. I'd also like to say that I don't think my expectations were too high. I'm a seasoned backpacker and traveler in both the developed and undeveloped world, and I live in Pakistan. So it's not like this was my first time visiting a developing country.

Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters Tour

Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters

What I was looking for: - do more cultural activities than when travelling solo (I usually do none) - stay with a chill group of people for a week - see Kerala that I heard so much about My experience: - this tour has limited activities. It’s in the itinerary. I booked the only one that matches my dates without checking too much… - the group was pretty cool. The restaurants / bars we were recommended were bad though. - I got to see Kerala. The walk through the rice fields was amazing Overall, I’d say go for it if you’re not comfortable travelling on your own. The 2 days in the backwaters were worth going on a tour. The beach is better done solo travelling / resort / hostel.

Incredible South India

We had a very interesting tour with an excellent driver (Mr Anthony) who made us comfortable and very knowledgeable guides everywhere we visited. Our favourite Hotel was in Mysore although all were good and the visit to Halebidu was probably my highlight as the temples were magnificent with such elaborate carvings. Goa was not as relaxing as I imagined. We enjoyed the beach but didn't want to lay in the sun too long so other than shopping we didn't find it as attractive as we had expected. Overall all it was a very good introduction to a country we had not visited before. The arrangements for meeting the drivers and guides worked well for us despite us arriving and departing before/after the 11 day tour so thanks to Linda and other support staff this worked well.

Thanks for such an amazing trip . We could not have been happier with our experience. Your attention to detail is impeccable: all aspects of travel coordination were arranged for and executed smoothly. The guides are both knowledgable and personable and they organized visits according to our interests.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Southern India

Great tour! Excellent itinerary, good hotels and well paced. Our leader, Garima, was highly professional and friendly.
The Trip exceeded our expectations. We were lucky to have Jeshin as our tour Guide. He was well informed and was pretty clear with setting expectations about our BasiX tour package. We got a true cultural experience that included travel within India on Private Bus, Trains, Tuk-Tuks, Ferry and State Transport Bus. We even rode an Elephant in Periyaar. With the right attitude and patience, this is a rewarding tour. The food was exquisite in most cities (you should explore local options). Jeshin gave us multiple options in most cities. We enjoyed Trivandram, Kochi, Varkala, Hampi & Mysore. Mysore Palace was so crowded due to the Dec Holidays, we probably should have skipped it. The Mysore Silk saree shopping and eating at Mylaree & 'Frosting' made up for it. Hotels and Homestays in most places was pretty good. I think Mysore was probably the only bad one since there were so many choices, Interpid could do better. Hotel in Hampi was the best. The only complaint we have is regarding the Periyaar Sanctuary. That day could have been planned better by Intrepid. If they had made advance reservations when we were in Varkala, we would have been able to do the Govt Jungle Trips as opposed to private outside the Jungle trips. We didnt have any tickets left, by the time we reached Periyaar. We did d teh Kerala Martial arts, which was good, but left a sore spot about missing the jungle trek. Overall a really nicely planned tour and well worth its shoe string budget cost. Enjoy!!! we did :)

Itinerary for Southern Explorer

Chennai - mamallapuram.

Greeted on arrival in Chennai and transfer to the Ideal Beach Resort at Mamallapuram or similar for two nights. Enjoy a restful day at the beach followed by a welcome dinner.

Thousands of years before the British first landed on the Coromandel Coast, merchants’ ships were setting sail from a city further south to ports as far afield as the Malacca Straits. Known as Mahabalipuram (or Mamallapuram), the town was praised by both Periplus and Ptolemy for its wealth and sophistication. Marco Polo enthused about the ‘Seven Great Pagodas’ that rose from its shore, a skyline hewn from solid granite by the Pallava Dynasty in the 7th century AD.

Accommodation Options

Ideal Beach Resort, Mahabalipuram

Ideal Beach Resort, Mahabalipuram

Mamallapuram.

Morning sightseeing of Mamallapuram includes a visit to the ancient Shore Temple and the impressive rock carvings and reliefs from the mythological Indian epic known as the Mahabharata. The afternoon is at leisure with the option of a city tour of Chennai, which can be arranged at a supplement.

Numerous vestiges of this golden era survive amid the giant humpback boulders looming above the modern village. Ranging from shrines sculpted in the form of rathas (temple chariots), to mandapas (cave sanctuaries) and giant open-air reliefs, they include the world-famous Shore Temple.

Mamallapuram - Pondicherry

Drive South on the pretty East Coast Highway to the former French colony of Pondicherry (3 hours). Explore the colonial buildings, statues, and churches on foot. Spend the night at Residency Towers or similar for the night.

Puducherry, also known as Pondicherry or Pondi, a half-day’s drive south of Mamallapuram, served as France’s principal stronghold on the Coromandel during the Carnatic Wars of the 17th century, and remained a colony until 1962. Typically French houses with louvered windows and colour-washed Neoclassical facades line the backstreets of the former Ville Blanche, and other echoes of the Gallic era abound, from the red képis worn by local policemen to the games of pétanque played on the palm-shaded seafront square.

Residency Towers, Puducherry

Residency Towers, Puducherry

Pondicherry - kumbakonam.

A day’s drive inland to Kumbakonam (5 hours), via Darusaram, home of the UNESCO World Heritage Airavateshwara Temple. Stay at the Mantra Koodam or similar for two nights.

The Great Living Chola Temples were built by kings of the Chola Empire, which stretched over all of south India and the neighbouring islands. The site includes three great 11th-and 12th-century Temples including the Airavateshwara Temple at Darasuram. The Airavateshwara temple complex, built by Rajaraja II, testifys to the brilliant achievements of the Chola in architecture, sculpture, painting, and bronze casting.

Mantra Koodam, Kumbakonam

Mantra Koodam, Kumbakonam

Today is a full day of sightseeing in Thanjavur, including a visit the Brihadeeshwara Temple complex: its 62m high tower is the tallest of its kind in India. Also enjoy a traditional Tamil thali lunch.

The Kaveri (Cauvery) Delta of central Tamil Nadu was the heartland of the mighty Chola Dynasty, whose towering temples stand as south India’s defining monuments. One of the greatest of these giant shrines is Brihadeshwara in the town of Thanjavur (Tanjore) – a soaring pyramid of granite, exquisitely constructed and embellished with inscriptions and carvings of deities which look almost as fresh today as they must have during the reign of Rajaraja I (985–1014AD), who commissioned them.

Elsewhere in this bustling Tamil town, the impressive Durbar Hall of the Royal Palace Complex stands as a reminder of the glory days of the Nayak Kings of the 16th and 18th centuries, while in the same compound, the town’s Art Gallery holds an extraordinary collection of Chola bronzes.

Kumbakonam - Madurai

Drive to the town of Madurai (5-6 hours), to visit the stunning Meenakshi Temple complex with its vast colourfully carved gopuram (towers) and bustling bazaars. Stay overnight at the GRT Regency hotel or similar.

For sheer visual impact, no Hindu temple in South India can match the magnificence of the Meenakshi-Sundeshwarar in Madurai. The gigantic, multi-coloured gopura towers of the ‘Fish-Eyed Goddess’ soar 46m above the city’s streets, writhing in stucco figures of gods, saints, demons and mythical monsters. The great pyramids, however, are merely an overture to the wonders enclosed below, where a labyrinth of richly carved pillared halls, colonnaded walkways, and interlocking courtyards host a never-ending round of rituals.

GRT Regency Hotel, Madurai

Madurai - periyar national park.

In the morning, drive across state borders into Kerala arriving at Periyar National Park, for two nights at the Cardamom County Resort or similar.

The mountains of inland Kerala, which run the entire length of the state, are one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots. Tea, coffee and spice plantations dominate many areas, but abundant forest also survives, and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses one of the most readily accessible of these. Centred on a flooded valley system, the park is among the largest in India, famous first and foremost for its herds of wild elephant, which congregate in the dry season around the shores of Periyar Lake.

Cardamom County, Thekkady

Cardamom County, Thekkady

Periyar national park.

This morning take a walk in Periyar Nature Reserve with tribal trackers, in search of wildlife. Afternoon visit a spice plantation which offers an insight in the cultivation and processing of cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, pepper and more.

Boat safaris on Periyar Lake are fun, but too noisy for serious wildlife spotting. A better option is to take to the footpaths in the company of a local guide, who can track and identify the many creatures who live in this well-preserved tract of forest. Malabar giant squirrels, palm civets and sambar deer are commonly encountered, as are hornbills and other spectacular birds.

During the afternoon tour of a local spice plantation, you’ll see how cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon are cultivated and processed.

Periyar National Park - Kumarakom

Today we descend through the Western Ghats towards Kumarakom (4 hours), a sleepy village on the shores of Lake Vembanad, for an overnight stay at the Rhythm Kumarakom or similar. The afternoon is at leisure.

Kumarakom, a tiny village located between the shores of Vembanad Lake the largest of Kerala’s backwaters and a vast 200-square-kilometre lagoon provides an idyllic setting for relaxing with its calm waters and horizon merges imperceptibly with the milky tropical sky. Houseboats gliding across the glassy surface of the lake appear to be floating on thin air, and flocks of birds on the wing are pursued by perfect mirror images of themselves on the water below.

Rhythm Resort Kumarakom

Rhythm Resort Kumarakom

Kumarakom - alleppey (rice boat).

Late morning, board a rice boat for an overnight cruise on Lake Vembanad and the backwaters:- a region that, not only shelters some unique animal and bird life, but also lush paddy fields which are referred to as the ‘Rice Bowl of Kerala’. This is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.

Up until the 1980s, large barges made of oiled jackwood and canopies of plaited palm leaves were used throughout the Kuttinad region to transport rice and other produce through the backwaters. Now, trucks do the haulage work, but the boats – known as kettu vallam in Malayali – take visitors on cruises around the canals, rivers and lagoons of this fascinating region, where most of the population still live in island villages.  A far cry from the oily craft of old, kettu vallam are today fitted with comfortable en-suite, air-con bedrooms, galleys, and viewing decks from which you’ll be able to watch the watery world slip past. Four-course meals of delicious Keralan curries are served by liveried staff in the evening.

Rice boats

Depart after breakfast for Cochin (2 hours). Check-in at the Fragrant Nature or similar for two nights. In the evening, take a sunset cruise on Cochin harbour.

For centuries the hub of India’s spice and tea trade, Fort Cochin occupies the northern tip of a peninsula dividing the mouth of the Vembanad Lake from the Arabian Sea. Its red-tiled skyline bears the imprint of its former colonial residents: Lusitanian chapels, Jewish synagogues, Dutch burghers’ houses, Armenian mansions, and British bungalows and godowns (warehouses) all survive in the Fort’s grid of narrow lanes – the largest collection of early colonial buildings in Asia. You’ll get a picture-postcard view of the waterfront, with its iconic Chinese fishing nets, during the harbour cruise in the evening.

Fragrant Nature

Fragrant Nature

Spend the morning taking in the sights of historic Fort Cochin. Explore the colonial streets, the Dutch Palace, with its murals of the Ramayana, the Jewish Synagogue and St Francis, the oldest church in India. In the evening, attend a Kathakali performance, a traditional dance drama in which the dancers wear elaborate costumes and make up.

Your guided tour of the city’s chief landmarks takes in the beautiful Dutch Palace in Matancherry, famed for its traditional Keralan murals, followed by a visit to the old Synagogue in nearby Jew Town. This district holds several huge, and very well stocked, antiques emporia that are well worth a browse.

A Hilltop View Of Periyar Lake In The Western Ghats Of South India

Exceptional value for a tour from Karnataka’s palaces, parks and hill-station to the backwaters of Kerala, the Western Ghats and the temples of Tamil Nadu

India’s magic lies in a vibrant abundance of people and landscapes. Southern India provides a mixture of experiences, from palaces and national parks to backwaters, temples and the natural beauty of the Western Ghats in three contrasting regions.

Karnataka’s treasures include the extravagant and slightly eccentric Mysore Palace with its intricate carvings and dramatic scenery, the natural beauty of Bandipur and Ooty hill station. Take the Ooty toy train to Coonoor through the picturesque Nilgiri hills.

Kerala’s natural splendour and heritage is revealed. See a way of life from the past on the backwater cruise, the great old town of Fort Cochin with its historic buildings and scenic lake and landscape of Periyar National Park.

Tamil Nadu’s magnificent temples at Madurai, Tanjore, and Mahbalipuram contrast with colonial Pondicherry and Madras (now Chennai), first colonial capital.

The opportunity is afforded for independent exploration or to add optional performances and temple visits.

15 days | travel to the cultural and scenic highlights of southern india..

Local woman picking tea in a tea field, India

Lush and tropical, southern India is inspiring and delightful. Beneath the green shade of a coastal paradise, meet with locals in their fishing villages and tribal homes. Join them in the bazaars, on buses and boats, or even on pilgrimage in Madurai. From cultural sights like the Maharaja's Palace in Mysore to French-influenced Puducherry and the vast landscape of Periyar, southern India's spirituality, friendly people, and wild animal sanctuaries make it a fascinating part of the country to explore.

Trip overview

  • Discover the waterfalls, tea plantations and spice markets of South India’s Western Ghats, a jungle-clad mountain range older than the Himalaya and one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.
  • Known as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’, Kochi is a fascinating blend of Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and English influences, and is best explored by ferry.
  • Step back in time among the iridescent hills of the very British ‘Snooty Ooty’ – home of snooker and the charming Nilgiri toy train.
  • Search for elusive wildlife, including elephants, sloths, and birds on safari around one of the best places in India to observe nature up close – Periyar National Park.
  • Experience a unique way of life with a family homestay and home-cooked meals in the idyllic backwaters of Kerala.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Positive Change for Marine Life. Donations help them to nurture ocean health with community-led conservation initiatives that inspire coastal restoration, sustainable fishing practices and waste-managemen
  • This trip is packed full of sights and experiences, including many main highlights of southern India along with plenty of insights into local life. There is an extensive amount of travel and a number of single-night stays to ensure you can fit as much as possible.
  • This adventure uses a variety of transport options, including train and bus travel for up to 8 hours. There is also an included overnight sleeper train from Mysore to Mamallapuram, so be sure to have a book, some podcasts, and your best travel games ready.
  • Sleeper trains a quintessential Indian experience and a great way to travel long distances while still getting maximum time in each place. With the experience can come some unpredictability – there are occasional delays or even cancellations. Beds are padded berths with sheets, pillow, and blanket provided (although some people prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). Please note that you may be sharing with locals of the same or opposite gender. See the Transport section of the Essential Trip Information for more detail about train travel in India or this guide for more about train travel around the world: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/overnight-train-travel-around-the-world/
  • Up in the Western Ghats, it can be surprisingly cool at night, especially in winter. Check weather reports before you go to help with your packing, and remember too to bring modest clothing (ie. pants or skirts that go below the knees and tops that cover your arms) for our visits to religious sites in particular.
  • Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. You’ll be visiting a few temples throughout your adventure, so please ensure that you’re dressed appropriately with legs and shoulders covered.

Your Indian adventure starts today in Kochi with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive in Kochi early, there are plenty of things to see and do. Once an important spice-trading centre, Kochi has been under Portuguese, Dutch and British rule at various times throughout history. Explore with one of our Urban Adventures or wander down to the shore and seek out the huge Chinese fishing nets dotted along the coast of Fort Cochin.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning, take on Kochi with a leader-led orientation tour. Take a local tuk tuk to Mattancherry and drop by the Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century before it was renovated and presented to the Rajas of Cochin by the Dutch. Pay an optional visit to Paradesi Synagogue – the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth and home to many rare antiques. Then amble around the spice bazaars and antique stores of Fort Cochin. In the evening, experience a Kathakali performance. This Keralan dance is an ornately costumed display of storytelling, requiring complete control of the body.

  • Kochi - Leader-led Fort Kochi walking tour
  • Kochi - Dutch Palace
  • Kochi - Kathakali performance
  • Kochi - Jewish Synagogue - INR5

Buckle up, because most of today is spent travelling. Catch a 3.5-hour train to Coimbatore, before travelling by private vehicle to Conoor, where dinner is included at your accommodation tonight.

Spend the morning in Conoor with an orientation walk and a visit to a tea plantation to learn about the history of tea production. Later board Ooty’s renowned toy train for a ride along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Be sure to get a window seat for great views over the lush countryside. In nearby Conoor, visit a tea plantation to learn about the history of tea production. Spend the rest of the day exploring Ooty’s Botanical Gardens, which are home to over 650 species of plants and trees. Alternatively, get a little bit romantic with a boat ride on the lake.

  • Ooty - Nilgiri Mountain Railway & Tea Plantation visit
  • Ooty - Botanical Gardens - INR50
  • Ooty - Boat ride - INR200

Take a private vehicle for the short drive to Bandipur today. Set against the backdrop of the Nilgiri Hills, Mudumalai National Park was once the Mysore Maharaja's private hunting ground. In 1974 it was brought under Project Tiger and is now one of the best sanctuaries in India to observe wildlife in close proximity. Embark on a short safari in search of tigers, leopards, elephants, sloth bears, sambars, spotted deer, and much more. There's also an amazing variety of birdlife in the park. Tonight’s family-run accommodation in Bandipur is a mixed-gender dormitory style with a common bathroom. This dorm room is only open to your group.

  • Jungle Lodge (1 night)
  • Bandipur - National Park Safari

Travel by private vehicle across the scenic Karnataka plains to Mysore, stopping to share a biryani lunch with local Loval host and family. Mysore is an easy-going town with a pleasant climate, perfect for wandering around on foot. Your leader will provide an orientation walk for you to get your bearings. A visit to Mysore is incomplete without a look around Mysore Palace. One of the most ornate palaces in India, its interior is full of colour, mosaics, and mirrors.

  • Mysore - Home cooked lunch & family visit
  • Mysore - Maharaja's Palace
  • Mysore - Leader-led walking tour

This morning, head out of Mysore and climb Chamundi Hill to the Sri Chamundeswari Temple, dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga. Continue on to the Keshava Temple in the small town of Somnathpur – an excellent example of Hoysala architecture. You’ll also have some time to pay an optional visit to Tipu Sultan’s mausoleum in Srirangapatna, or instead, return to Mysore for a palm reading or to catch a film at the local cinema. Tonight, board an 11-hour overnight sleeper train to Chennai.

  • Overnight Sleeper Train (1 night)
  • Mysore - Keshava Temple
  • Mysore - Chamundi Hill & Temple
  • Mysore - Cinema - INR100
  • Mysore - Tipu Sultan's Mausoleum - INR500

Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. You’ll be visiting a few temples today, so please ensure that you’re dressed appropriately with legs and shoulders covered.

Sleeper trains in India are clean and air-conditioned, and beds are padded berths with sheets, pillow, and blanket provided (although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet). Please also note that on the sleeper train you may be sharing with locals of the same or another gender.

After arriving in Chennai, take a private vehicle along the scenic East Coast Road to Mamallapuram. Explore this ancient seaport town by tuk tuk, paying a visit to the seventh-century Shore Temple and the enormous bas-relief rock carving, known as Arjuna's Penance. There will also be time to inspect the town’s numerous mandapams (pillared temple pavilions), watch local stonemasons at work, or just to kick back and relax at a beachside restaurant.

  • Mamallapuram - Shore Temples guided tour

Travel by private vehicle for 5 hours through palm trees and rice paddies to Puducherry (Pondicherry). On arrival, head out with your group and leader on a walking tour to see local temples, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and the French Quarter. Once a French colony, you’ll see evidence of French influence in Puducherry's architecture, its wide town squares, and even in the uniforms of the police.

  • Puducherry - Leader-led French Quarter walking tour

Transfer by taxi to the railway station at Villupuram and board a train to the temple city of Madurai (approximately 6 hours). Madurai’s Tamil roots stretch back 2500 years, making it one of the oldest cities in India. Wander the lamp-lit labyrinth of the Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and goddess Meenakshi. Visit the Gandhi Memorial Museum, which displays a detailed account of India’s struggle for independence along with the bloodstained dhoti the famous leader wore when he was assassinated.

  • Madurai - Sri Meenakshi Temple
  • Madurai - Gandhi Museum - Free

Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. You’ll be visiting some temples today, so please ensure that you’re dressed appropriately with legs and shoulders covered. Also, please respect local guidelines and rules, including no cameras or photography.

This morning, travel by private vehicle along a winding road to the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. High in the ranges of the Western Ghats, the park is set among stunning scenery and is the most popular wildlife sanctuary in Southern India. Both today and tomorrow, you’ll get to explore the national park on foot and will understand why Periyar is a popular wilderness sanctuary because of its lush surroundings. Enjoy a tour of a local spice plantation. And then join our hosts at a local family and try some authentic home-cooked flavors in Southern India.

  • Periyar - Spice plantation visit
  • Periyar - Home cooked meal

Venture back into the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary today for a guided nature walk. Encounters with animals in the wild are never guaranteed, and this is more of a jungle walk than an animal spotting tour, but do look out for tiger tracks, spotted deer, Indian elephants, or gaur – the world's largest species of buffalo. In the afternoon, unwind with an optional ayurvedic massage at your accommodation, or just relax in this scenic setting with a drink in hand.

  • Periyar - National Park
  • Periyar - Guided nature walk
  • Periyar - Boat trip - INR650

Please note that the nature walk is usually the Green Zone walk in the Periyar National Park. Even though this park is a Tiger Reserve, tigers are extremely rare and shy in Periyar. Your nature walk is nonetheless a fascinating experience, as the local guides are villagers who have lived in the area for generations and are very knowledgeable of the flora and fauna of the area.

Temperatures and humidity can be high in southern India, especially when walking around sites like the Periyar. Be prepared by taking plenty of drink breaks and wearing appropriate skin protection. Your nature walk will start early, but it does get quite hot and humid in the late morning.

Travelling by private vehicle, pass through the rubber, tea, and coffee plantations on the way to the backwaters of Kerala. Board a motorboat to cross to the island village where you’ll stay with a local family tonight. In the late afternoon, explore the island with a local English-speaking guide, and sometimes your homestay host! This is a great chance to meet locals and learn more about their unique way of life. Take a leisurely punt boat ride around the waterways and enjoy the scenery. In the evening, share stories and a traditional home-cooked Keralan meal with your host family.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Kerala Backwaters - Pole boat ride
  • Kerala Backwaters - Village walk

In Kerala, a homestay is similar to a local guesthouse where the family usually live on site. Accommodation is twin-share, with a private bathroom. Delicious local meals are cooked in-house by your hosts.

Wake early, before crossing the backwaters by private boat to Alleppey. From here, take a 2-hour local bus back to Kochi. The rest of the day is free for you to choose your own adventure. Perhaps you’d like to stroll down Princess Street for a spot of shopping, or book yourself into a southern Indian cooking class – your group leader will have some other recommendations, so be sure to ask them. Tonight, why not gather together with your group and have a night out at a local restaurant. Whatever you do, be sure to snack on a pazham pori (fried fritter of banana or plantain) while you explore the city.

With no activities planned for today, you are able to leave the accommodation at any time.

5 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 3 dinners

Lucy Cain

My Husband & I and our 8 year old son visited India for the first time. We reached out to a dozen travel companies but were most impressed how Indian Expeditions interacted with us.  We got immediate email response to our questions giving clear advice and information about the options available to us and were also offered a free tour place for our son. We chose the Essential South India journey.

The tour was absolutely fabulous and we got to see and experience so many things we definitely couldn’t have by ourselves. The itinerary itself is not rushed, and instead of trying to cram everything in, focuses on just the right things. We have a very hard time trying to pick out which day was the best – every day was just fantastic. Travel time is well thought off, the resorts we stayed in excellent, the food just incredible.

Chandan is a great guide and along with all his excellent historical knowledge about the places we visited gave us a wonderful insight into life in India.

I would highly recommend this tour.

Faith Augustus

An INCREDIBLY well organised trip, with an EXCEPTIONAL guide. Me and my two teenaged sons loved every minute of our adventure. And it was an adventure for sure – watching tigers in the wild, cooking with locals, helping out in a farm – just INCREDIBLE. My sons have learnt SO much from the trip and now want to pursue careers in history – that was how well the complex, ancient history of the region was bought alive to all of us on the Essential South India tour. We have been on many guided trips, but never enjoyed any as much as we did this one. Thank you Chandan and Indian Expeditions. You are all so wonderful. We will be back!

Faith Augustus

Dexter Maxwell

Indian Expeditions Comprehensive South India is most certainly an excellent way to travel and enjoy this wonderful part of India. It encompasses both the history and iconic religious sites to fantastic landscapes and getaways as well as allowing you to get close to the very friendly and interesting people who live there. You will be sure to both learn much of the fascinating country and be able to immerse yourself both in the vast history, present and the wonderfully diverse countryside and coastlines. A very well organised trip with an excellent group of travel companions.

Dexter Maxwell

John Trevor

An incredible trip, much better than we expected and without a doubt we have the best guide of all the trips we have ever been on – Seetharam.  The South India trip really has a brilliant mixture of history, culture, nature, beach and backwaters. I can’t believe we did and saw so much in this magical 14 days. The trip was extremely well organised from start to finish and the group we travelled with were all like minded and fun. We will keep coming back to do more trips with Indian Expeditions and recommend them to all my friends who’d like to visit India.

John Trevor

Brad Cooper

We had a fantastic time with Indian Expeditions and Chandan as our tour leader on a 14 day tour of the region. Chandan’s knowledge of the area and expertise were invaluable. On top of that, he was laid back and easy to talk to, all the while accommodating our unique expectations and special requirements as well as others in group. He also leveraged his connections to secure the best possible experiences everywhere we visited. In contrast, we did use another company while we were in Northern India and they were not nearly as good. It seemed like their primary goal was to get us in front of the merchants that they probably get kickbacks from. Indian Expeditions was not like that at all. It was like having a group of local showing us around.
