Wairaurahiri Jet Boat Review

Thankyou for an outstanding day on the Wairaurahiri Jet

I just wanted to say thankyou for an outstanding day on the Wairaurahiri Jet. It was the highlight of our trip. Kevin was a fantastic guide and my niece, Tammy and I enjoyed it so much. I have been on the return leg once before coming off the Hump ridge but to get to experience the full day trip was even better. Thank you again and rest assured I will continue to spread the word about our experience.

Warm regards Linda Macdonald

Fantastic day and amazing to see parts of Fiordland I have never been to before!

I just wanted to pop you an email to say a massive thank you for taking us out on the boat on Friday, it was a fantastic day and amazing to see parts of Fiordland I have never been to before!

Kevin was a delight, very knowledgeable and cooked some of the best venison I think I’ve ever had (feel free to not tell him that as I wouldn’t want to make him too big headed 😉). The whole experience was brilliant start to finish and I’m so grateful you managed to squeeze us on.

I hope you had a fantastic Easter and I’ll continue sending people your way!

Awesome place and worth every dollar

Awesome place and worth every dollar, incredible scenery and staff are awesome. Did it last Friday and enjoyed every minute.

FRAN, Sept22

Had a fantastic day we had on Saturday. Kevin was a very friendly, competent and skilled driver, host and cook! The trip across the lake and on the river was excellent. We all enjoyed walking the tracks up to the different huts, and the lunch Kevin prepared and cooked for us was delicious and of great variety considering it was all packed into the boat! Both adults and kids were thrilled and enjoyed themselves a lot. I’m pretty sure all of the kids on board hope they have a job like Kevin’s when they are older 😂

One of the best jet boat rides

My husband and I did this trip last weekend. One of the best jet boat rides we have ever done and we have done a few. Beautiful scenery with a fantastic BBQ for lunch. Our driver and guide Kevin was great with his knowledge and stories. Highly recommend this experience.

Lake Hauroko Tour – Thanks Guys!

Thanks guys, We had a great time and the weather was actually alright for us most days. We were generally right on time with the recommended DOC times, but on the last day from Upper Spey Hut to the road end it took us 7.5 hours total, including lunch break, around 6 hours of walking due to significant tree fall. This is signposted at 4.5 hours. Hopefully DOC will fix this soon, they seem aware of it from the intentions book entries. Cheers, Florian, Andy and Jasper.

Thank you for the Dusky package.

Very much Value plus especially the boat trip up lake Hauroko with Johan. A real character. I called at the Caswell street depot to say thanks but no one around. Pete and I went through in 7 days, extra day at loch maree hut due to torrential rain so excluded the side trip to Supper Cove as we were under a time frame for flights. The decent down to loch maree is probably the hardest very steep, There was extensive windfall on the track up to Kintail hut. DOC had cleared the track down from centre pass but the last day out from upper Spey hut was slow due to more windfall. Doc said 4hrs we took 5.2hrs otherwise we were within DOC times. Recommend long gaiters a hiking pole to test bog depth small water bottle as there is lots of water on track and fire starters as the cut logs were very green and wet. Thanks again for you patience as our trip numbers went from 7 to 2😀 resulting in major rearranging and I have no hesitation in referring your company for anyone doing the Dusky. Cheers John

A great trip on the boat down the river

Hi Joyce Johan Kevin

A great trip on the boat down the river . You boys did a great job and it was well worth the it . I will recommend it to people I talk to. Keep up the good work with the stoats. Regards Hamish and Robyn

What a fabulous day

Hi Joyce Johan and Kevin

Everyone in our group on Sunday just wanted to say what a fabulous day we had. Even the rough lake was exciting. It is an awesome day out and an amazing river and definitely some skill needed to drive the boat. Thanks Kevin.

Thanks again and will definitely recommend your business

Maori and European history

We had an awesome day with Johan and highly recommend the Wairaurahiri Jet day trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the exhilarating jetboat ride, and as Johan is such an experienced skipper we felt safe even when there didn’t seem to be much water under the boat. Johan was generously sharing his vast knowledge of the area with us, including flora, fauna, Maori and European history, conservation, and more than one funny anecdote. The BBQ lunch was superbly cooked and lovingly presented, with proper plates, cutlery and glasses, so no plastic waste. It has been a perfect day. In hindsight I wish we had opted to stay the night at Waitutu Lodge, what would have allowed us to spend more time at the mouth of the river. Thank you Johan and Joyce for great pre-trip communication and an unforgettable journey.

Wairaurahiri Jet thrills of the boat ride

Thrills of the boat ride

Hi Johan and Joyce Just want to say thank you for giving us a great day out yesterday. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular scenery, the thrills of the boat ride, the excellent commentary, all the side trips we did off the boat and the very nice lunch. You worked really well as a team and made it a memorable day for all of us.

Amazing, unforgettable experience

Best jetboat trip ever in New Zealand and best tour guide in Johan. What amazing local knowledge and stories he shares with regard to Lake Hauroko, the Wairarahiri River and the Waitutu forest block. And the venison BBQ lunch at Waitutu Lodge was just delicious. Thanks so much Johan for an unforgettable experience.

A MUST on your list – Exceptional area in our country

This was a stunning day for us. We drove to the Hauroko Lake and were greeted by Johan. We lucked in with the weather and our driver. Johan is very experienced with his boat skills and his knowledge of the region- we learned a lot about the river and the environment. We stopped a few times to walk in the bush and what an experience that was- I was amazed by the mosses and the trees in the un-milled area. Out to the coast and a great bbq lunch provided. I cannot recommend this trip enough.

Exhilarating, scenic lake, mountain and river day trip deep into Southland’s extra special natural, beech forest.

Awesome day trip in the middle of winter with Wairaurahiri Jet – fantastic communication with Joyce months ahead and then Johan delivered the goods for our group of 10 on Monday 5th July. A very well organised and informative trip from Lake Hauroko , down NZ steepest river to the Southland Coast line near Waitutu Forest Lodge ( our fabulous lunch stop). Johan was entertaining, knowledgeable and very personable and a good shot because the venison steaks were delicious! Our bush walks were a nice stretch for the legs and also full of information about the history, fauna, wildlife. Johan and Joyce’s trapping program to eradicate the introduced species that prey on NZ’s native birds, flora & fauna is a credit to their environmental values.

Johan is a national treasure. Awesome trip from start to finish. Informative. Funny. Scenic. Well organized. Stunning part of the country to see and learn more about. Just do it. You won’t be disappointed. Awesome in every way

An unforgettable experience

Johan, Joyce and Kevin provide an exceptional experience in a unique part of New Zealand. We had been picked up by Johan in the Jetboat in Dec 2020 from the bottom of the Wairaurahiri after the Hump Ridge and decided we had to go back to this beautiful part of the world. So, just recently Kevin picked us up from the other end of Lake Hauroko on their water taxi outboard after completing the Dusky Tramp. Not only is the scenery out of this world but the team provide so much local knowledge and humour along the way. We couldn’t recommend this experience more to anyone in this part of New Zealand.

Highly recommended

Had an awesome day with Johan.  Great company and BBQ lunch.  Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see some of New Zealand’s wilderness.

amazing day with stunning views

Thank you again for an amazing day with stunning views, nerve racking action and perfect BBQ.  We really love the way you explain nature around the lake and just how you are.  We will definitely be in contact in the future for another ride or fishing tour. Thank you.

like being in a marketing movie of NZ

So pleased we made the journey to experience this trip – we were in awe.  It was like being in a marketing movie of NZ.  Won’t say too much as you need to make the effort to experience it for yourself.  Johan was an incredible driver and extremely knowledgeable.

Wairaurahiri Jet

A fantastic day trip, definitely worth it

The trip was fantastic.  Johan is very experienced and you feel safe with him in this fast jet.  Wonderful to sail from the lake over this beautiful river through a beautiful untouched area to the sea.  A fantastic day trip, definitely worth it.

Are jet boat tours in New Zealand safe?

Absolutely, all of these commercial jet boat tour operators have highly trained and experienced staff who have your safety as their number one priority.

To get your jet boating license you must complete 50+ hours on the water training. On top of this most commercial jet boat operators have additional training before drivers are allowed to take passengers.

They will give you safety instructions and a life jacket prior to any trips and they will explain the safety procedures in depth, as long as you listen to their instructions and guidelines you will be fine.

These businesses must comply with strict safety regulations in order to conduct their business and they are regularly checked on by Maritime NZ   who ensure that each tour company is abiding by all of the rules and regulations.

You can rest assured in knowing that each touring company we've included in today's write up all meet the safety requirements and regulations set out by Maritime NZ.

How long do jet boat tours last?

Most tours are only around 15-25 minutes and time flies due to the exhilarating nature of your tour. Tours such as Kjet in Queenstown offer a 60 minute tour which is definitely a better experience if you want value for money. If you want to go up the river to the rapids, where the fun really starts, you'll only get around 20 minutes on the boat, as the river isn't long enough to offer longer tours.

Some companies offer free shuttle buses from town to the base, and these bus journeys are often much longer than your actual time on the river.

Do I get wet on a jet boat tour?

You will get wet however most companies offer a poncho or spray jacket which goes over your clothes and under your life jacket to keep you dry.

In winter it can be pretty chilly so you'll definitely want to wrap up warm, while in summer, getting a little wet is all part of the fun. I always wear a coat and then the poncho, and my clothes stay dry! My hair on the other hand is always a bit messy and wet after.

How fast do jet boats go?

The boats can go up to 95km/h in a straight line on shallow rivers such as the Shotover. As you get up into the canyons and smaller rivers such as where the Shotover Jet and Skippers Canyon jet operate, you'd never be able to achieve these speeds due to the nature of the river.

Some jet boating companies like to promote their jet boats as the fastest but this makes little difference to your experience as you have absolutely no idea how fast you're actually going.

How much water do jet boats need?

Some jet boats only need 4" of water to operate, although operating at this level of water can scrape the bottom of the boat especially if there's rocks or wood in the water.

This is what the jet boat was invented for, very similar to a jet ski which uses a jet propulsion engine which sits just below the water surface, allowing for gliding over the water at depths as low as only 4" or 10 cm of water.

Will I get sea sick on a jet boat tour?

While jet boats don't go out on the open water (except in Auckland harbour), they do go up and down the rapids, as well as bob up and down in the water like any boat, so it's highly likely if you're prone to sea sickness you will feel unwell on a jet boating tour.

Getting off in the event you're unwell is embarrassing as the tour has to stop for everyone else while they return you to base or the edge of the river to walk back to base. If you're prone to sea sickness, either find a different tour or take some sea legs before you board. I'd also skip breakfast!

How much does the average jet boating tour cost?

Prices can range between each company and depending on what type of tour you are doing and for old old the person that you are paying for is.

Some general prices you may expect to see across most jet boating tours are ass follows:

  • $60-100 for a child.
  • $100-$160 for an adult.
  • $200-$400 for family packages which usually cover 2 adults and two children under the ages of 15.

These are just general prices to give you a rough idea, you may encounter cheaper or more expensive tours between different companies and different types of tours.

What types of things will I see and do in a tour?

Each company offers different types of tours and different types of beautiful scenery for you to see, in general you can expect to see all kinds of beautiful views of forestry, wild animals and waterfalls.

Some tours take you through various areas where you can see historical heritage sights which are truly unique.

Most tours will showcase their boats speeds and give you a good adrenaline rush full of 360 degree turns and high octane speeds.

You can choose prior to going out on a tour on whether you want a high speed adrenaline rush type of tour or a more slower and calmer scenic type of tour.

All jet boating companies offer a wide range of different types of tours to suit everyone whether it be for and adult or a child.

There are more things that haven't been mentioned here that these businesses will show you on their tour, each company is different and you will generally be told by them what they offer in their tours on their website or in our write up for each business above.

Now that you know where to get the best jet boating experience from you may also be interested in our other write up on the Best Sky Diving Companies in New Zealand because sky diving is another past time that will give you just as much of a thrill as jet boating.

Jet boating in Queenstown is the best way to explore our wild rivers.

Skim across the water, whizz round corners and shoot through narrow rocky gorges on a high-speed Queenstown jet boat ride. Queenstown is home to the world’s first commercial jet boat tour . Brothers Alan and Harold Melhop set up Kawarau Jet Services (or KJet as they’re now known) in 1959, introducing locals and visitors to a new kind of water adventure.

Today, adrenaline jet boat tours vary from white-knuckle white water rides, to wilderness tours, and even combos that offer jet boating followed by boutique wine tasting.

Experience a new generation of jet boats on Lake Whakatipu. Hydro Attack’s semi-submersible sharks are another world-first - a cross between a jet and torpedo, they hit speeds of 80kph, diving beneath the surface and breaching into the air.

The drive along Skippers Road was a treat in itself, well worth the time and money. It was assuring to have such an experienced driver - it is an extremely difficult narrow road. • R4553ESjoshuac 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles One word: Awesome! Our family’s experience with Skipper’s Canyon was AWESOME! We looked into several options with other jet boat operators but went with Skipper’s Canyon as the experience included the very cool 4-wheel drive along Skipper’s Canyon road and the jet boat ride was longer than what the other operators offer. Also, Skipper’s Canyon is a smaller operation so it’s way less crowded than other (bigger) operators. The team (bus driver and boat drivers) were soo great… very knowledgeable and super skilled! All our kids (two teenagers and a four year old) and my wife and I LOVED it! We’d do it again for sure! Read more Written March 24, 2024

  • Hannah-the-Brave89 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Pick This Jet Boat Tour from Queenstown! This tour was recommended to us by a local guide. We had originally booked another tour through a different company, but due to some mix-up we weren't able to attend. I am happy that we were able to do this tour instead. I honestly think we got a better experience than we would have through any of the other companies. This tour seems to go further away from town, and I heard the time on the jet boat is longer than the other companies. We also discovered that this is one of the last locally-owned jet-boat tours in Queenstown. It was a nail-biting ride through the canyon, but that only added to the adventure and the views! We felt safe and taken care of the entire trip. I am so glad this tour was recommended to us. Read more Written March 16, 2024
  • T9378ROinfo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Skipper Jet Boat We were collected by the driver and that was the start of a wonderful experience. The scenery is fantastic, skippers road was worth the trip on its own, then came the jet boat ride, the skill of the driver and the thrill of yhecjet boat really makes this tour a must do whilst in Queenstown. There are other jet boat rides, but Skippers Canyon Jet really is the best! Read more Written March 15, 2024

Which other jetboat rides give you a death defying, educational bus ride to your boat and THE best jet boat pilot in NZ? (Answer: none of them) If you want a little (aka a lot) bit more than just a blast up and down a river, this is the one for you. We loved it - worth every penny/cent. Read more Written March 9, 2024
  • SeeTheRainbow 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely brilliant! This really was a great trip! The driver guide was amusing, informative and a great driver, which was just as well because the Skippers Road is truly awe inspiring! Narrow ledges, steep drops, bends and curves that have you gripping the seat! The scenery is spectacular and when viewed with the benefit of the guide’s historical knowledge is incredible. The Skippers Canyon Jet was an adrenaline fuelled ride, speeding along the shallow river, dipping and weaving between the canyon walls. Brilliant fun and I would recommend to all without hesitation. The combination of the Skippers Road and the Skippers Canyon Jet definitely make this the experience to choose in the Shotover River Read more Written March 8, 2024

Just New Zealand Tours

New Zealand, home of the world’s best Jet Boat rides

There are a few important things you should know before travelling to New Zealand:

  • When referring to footwear, ‘flip flops’, ‘sandals’ or ‘thongs’ do not exist. ‘Jandals’ however can be found on feet on any beach or high street in New Zealand.
  • Don’t mention the 2007 rugby world cup.
  • Kiwis LOVE jet boats, and you should too!

NZ has a long history with the jet boat and is a world leader in the field of awesome jet boat rides. You’ll find them hurtling down rivers and lakes all over NZ, and we strongly recommend booking yourself in on one of the many options on either North or South Island. Here are some of our favourites!

Shotover Jet, Queenstown

shotover_jet1

NZ’s famous Shotover Jet

The legend. New Zealand’s first jetboat tour operator, Shotover Jet have been operating for over 40 years. Along the way they’ve served up thrills to over 4 million people. Located on the Shotover river in Queenstown, the Shotover Jet is a wild ride, known for high speeds and 360-degree spins. Shotover Jet have sole use of the Shotover canyon section of the river, giving them full mastery of every inch of the water you’ll travel on —which is a good thing, as these boats operate in as little as 10 centimetres of water! The twin-V8 engines of ‘big red’ provide a booming soundtrack which bounces off the walls of the canyon as you tear through at up speeds of to 90 km/h, skimming past boulders and rocky outcrops with expert ease. You’re also treated to some beautiful scenery with idyllic farmland paddocks and quiet pebble-lined bays. You might even see a sheep or two grazing up on the river banks. If you’re wondering whether you’ll get wet… it’s a strong possibility—but that’s part of the fun, right? If you’ve treated yourself to a new hairdo or simply prefer to stay dry, the best option would be to grab a seat closest to the centre of the boat.

Each 25-minute journey is immortalised via video cameras mounted on the boat, with videos available for purchase after every ride. Allow around 90 minutes total to ride the Shotover Jet including return travel time from Queenstown. An unmissable experience for anyone visiting the region. To learn more and book your Shotover Jet experience, click here .

Dart River Wilderness Jetboat Safari, Glenorchy (Queenstown)

You won’t see any lions or tigers on this safari, but you will definitely discover some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. The Dart River Wilderness Jet departs from Glenorchy, at the far end of Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu. But this is no short blast down-stream, it’s a full wilderness adventure navigating through braided, glacier-fed rivers, across lakes and deep into the heartland of Mt. Aspiring National Park. Your expert guide deepens the experience with commentary on the trees and wildlife of the area, ancient Māori legends and the stunning scenery as you pass through.

As this is a half-day trip, you can enjoy the chance to tie up the jet boat and explore the ancient beech forests that were used extensively as filming locations for the Lord of the Rings movies. The landscape is breathtaking, with rugged mountains towering over picturesque grass flats and babbling creeks and rivers. As part of your itinerary, a 4WD coach ride takes you through even more filming locations found in the Narnia and Lord of the Rings movies. And to cap it off, you can see the best of Lake Wakatipu on the drive in and out, it’s around a one-hour drive including photo stops.

Allow 6 hours for the full experience plus return travel from Queenstown. Follow the link to learn more about the Dart River Wilderness Safari .

Wanaka River Journeys, Wanaka

wanaka_river_journeys

Wanaka River Journeys

It’s an age-old question in New Zealand… which is more beautiful, Queenstown or Wanaka? Well, we’ve thought about it a lot and we still can’t decide. Some decisions just aren’t meant to be made. We can say for sure that a fantastic way to see either place is from the seat of a V8-powered jet boat, howling across their beautiful lakes and rivers. On your Wanaka River Journey, you’ll head up the crystal-clear waters of the Matukituki river towards Mt. Aspiring on a half-day wilderness cruise and walk. Your experienced driver takes you skimming across the glacier-fed waters, drifting into long, arcing turns and across shallow braids in the river. Grins and gasps are guaranteed, and as you pause in the tranquillity of the deep pools you’ll learn the history of the region and its glaciers. As you venture deeper into the heart of the mountainous country, leave the boat behind and make your way onshore for a walk through the forests of McGill’s Creek or up towards Avalanche Glacier. Lord of the Rings fans will instantly feel at home in this countryside. Allow around 4 hours for the whole trip, leaving plenty of time before and after to explore the alpine paradise that is Wanaka. Given enough time, you might be able to decide if you prefer it to Queenstown. Don’t bet on it though. Follow the link for more information on the Wanaka Jet Boat & Wilderness Walk Tour .

Fiordland Jet, Fiordland

Ask a kiwi what they know about Fiordland and they’ll likely give you a reply mentioning Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound. You might now hear the words ‘jet boat’. But that’s changing thanks to the amazing jet boat experiences offered by Fiordland Jet. They have an impressive range of tour options that cover the Waiau River, Lake Manapouri and the Kepler Track with more than just jet boating—there are helicopter rides and guided walks on offer too. These are two of our favourite picks from their range.

Pure Wilderness A jet boat up the Waiau river begins your adventure—you might recognise it as the great Anduin River from the Lord of the Rings movies. Your guide will ensure you keep an eye out for some trout along the way, as well as pointing out some of the unique flora and fauna of the area. Arriving on Lake Manapouri is an epic moment, where you’ll find yourself gazing in awe at the huge mountain ranges and ancient forests all around.

Twin Lakes Heli Jet Take to the skies for the best view of Fiordland as you make your way up the Waiau river via jet boat, before boarding a helicopter on the shores of Lake Manapouri. Your flight takes you over Lake Te Anau to the peak of the Kepler Mountain Ranges which offer perhaps the most stunning view anywhere in Fiordland—cameras essential.

Huka Falls Jet, Taupo

hukafalls_jet

Huka Falls Jet

Huka Falls Jet offer the biggest thrills in Taupo, the North Island’s home of adventure. They have a fleet of state-of-the-art jet boats and experienced drivers operating all year round with one goal: making unforgettable memories! Your driver takes the boat screaming down the Waikato River at over 80 km/h, sliding past boulders and trees on your way to Huka Falls, one of NZ’s most photographed places. Brace yourself for the 360-degree turn, guaranteed to leave your heart pumping and grinning from ear to ear. Some passengers liken the Huka Falls experience to a ’20-minute roller coaster on water’. Keep an eye out for clouds of steam rising from the hot streams which feed into the Waikato river, the Wairakei geothermal power station and Aratiaia Dam.

Huka means ‘foam’ in Māori, which is fitting for the huge volumes of water that come tumbling over the 11-metre cliff at Huka Falls, with water flows of up to 160 cubic metres per second. The falls are also known for their distinctive bright blue colour at their base, caused by the clear waters and mass of bubbles reflecting the natural light above.

As a short trip, the Huka Falls Jet leaves you plenty of time to explore the countless things to do in Taupo, famous for its golf resorts, walking tours, skydiving, fishing and bungy jumping. As well as being New Zealand’s largest lake, Taupo is one of NZ’s outdoor adventure hotspots.

Katoa Jet, Rotorua

Rotorua is best known as NZ’s geothermal wonderland and a cornerstone of Māori culture, but it’s also home to adrenaline rushes thanks to the Katoa Jet! Get your fix in just 30 minutes with a white-knuckle ride across Lake Rotorua. Your experienced driver will guide the V8-powered boat expertly through spins and curves, and pedal-to-the-metal, you’ll be roaring across the lake at over 80 km/h.

Landmarks to keep an eye out for on your journey include Kawaha Point, Mokoia Island and Sulphur Bay. You can explore Mokoia Island on your jet boat ride for additional cost, where a guided walk on the island takes less than an hour and introduces you to a secluded bird-lover’s paradise. Mokoia Island is home to rare breeding pairs of kiwis, North Island Saddlebacks and native Robins. For the maximum adrenaline rush, you have to try the Skyjet option. After taking the jet boat ride, strap into a parasail for a towed ride-in-the-sky. At 400ft high, you’ll got a 360-degree view over Rotorua and beyond! History of Jet Boating in New Zealand

Jetboating for everyone

New Zealand is the birthplace of the jet boat, where it was first designed by kiwi farmer-turned-engineer Sir Bill Hamilton in the 1950s. After establishing a manufacturing business, Hamilton set out to solve the unique problems faced by recreational boat users in New Zealand.

Traditional propeller boats were not suitable for navigating the rivers of New Zealand, which are often shallow and fast-flowing. Their propellers would often strike rocks in the shallow water or get stuck in the mud on the river bottom. Hamilton saw a solution in the use of water jet propulsion and developed his own unique design. His design used an internal impeller which drew water in, sped it up and then shot a jet of water out of the back on the waterline. And like that, the jet boat was born!

In 1960, Hamilton took a fleet of three boats equipped with his water jet units to the United States, where despite a sceptical response from local media, his crew successfully completed a world first by navigating all three boats up the Colorado river up and through the Grand Canyon. It was in the late 1960s and early 1970s that some kiwi entrepreneurs started to design and run jet boats for commercial use on the rivers near Queenstown, and thus was born the legendary Shotover Jet. Since then, the Shotover Jet has become a New Zealand icon and inspired jet boating operators all over New Zealand and beyond.
