Gold coast father shane savage dies after spectacular crash at powercruise event at willowbank.
Driver Shane Savage injured in horror crash at Queensland Raceway
A driver who was thrown from his vehicle at an amateur car racing meet in Queensland has died four days after the crash.
Shane Savage, 41, was competing in the Powercruise event at Queensland Raceway at Willowbank, Ipswich , on Friday night when his car rolled.
The force of the high-speed crash threw both Savage and his passenger from the car.
Savage, a father of young children and towing business owner on the Gold Coast, was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital with critical head, chest and pelvic injuries.
Police revealed on Tuesday morning he had died from his injuries.
In footage posted to social media, a man can be heard exclaiming, “He fell out of the car, bro”, in the immediate aftermath of the crash.
It’s unclear if the remark refers to Savage or his passenger, who suffered serious injuries.
Savage’s partner, Tara Lee Murphy, posted on Facebook on Monday to express gratitude for “everyone’s messages even though I can’t reply to you all right now.
“Everyone is so supportive, asking if I need help ... We have a long road ahead no matter the outcome,” she said.
Powercruise events allow car enthusiasts to participate in amateur races, perform burnouts and skids, and drift, among other activities.
“Powercruise events allow you to do all the things you’re not allowed to do on the streets,” the company’s website says.
It has been reported Savage was driving a Holden Torana when he crashed.
The research has found that the residue can stick around for up to a month, putting children at risk.

Amateur racing advocates insist powercruising is safe after death of man during Queensland race
Kyle Douglas believes he was put on Earth for one thing and one thing only – to drive fast cars.
Key points:
- Gold Coast man Shane Savage died when his car rolled at a Powercruise event in Queensland earlier this month
- It’s the second fatality at a Brisbane raceway this year, after drag racer Sam Fenech died in January
- Advocates say the sport is safe but carries a risk
The self-described revhead travels across the country participating in high-octane drag racing and burnout competitions in his modified ute.
But there's one event that's cast a spell over him – Powercruise.
Powercruise is an amateur cruising car event that allows anyone to push their car's "performance levels to the limit" by driving up to 130 kilometres per hour on a racetrack.
It's legal and open to anyone, provided their car passes safety checks.
"I'd call it nearly an addiction," Mr Douglas said.
"There's nothing else I've done in life that gives me that awesome feeling of excitement and adrenaline.
"You don't have to be on a big race team with millions of dollars' worth of cars, you can go out and build a car with your family and show up to the track."
But the death of one driver earlier this month near Brisbane has raised questions about how safe amateur car racing events are.
'There's always a risk'
Gold Coast man Shane Savage died at the Queensland Raceway when his car rolled during the 93rd instalment of Powercruise Promotions near Brisbane.
Queensland police and Workplace Health and Safety are investigating the incident.
It's the second fatality at a Brisbane raceway this year, after professional drag racer Sam Fenech died when he lost control of his car and collided with a camera tower at the Willowbank Raceway in January.
A review into the Willowbank incident by Workplace Health and Safety found safety measures did not contribute to the accident.
Mr Douglas said these incidents cast a shadow over the amateur racing community.
"It's something you never want to see," he said.
"But at the end of the day when you put your helmet on and go on the track, that's a risk that everyone takes."
It's the first fatal incident to happen in 20 years of powercruising in Australia, but according to data from the National Coronial Information System, 551 people died in wheeled motorsports activities between 2001 and 2017.
Over 33 per cent of those deaths occurred at a racetrack.
In February, an investigation into the deaths of four Targa Tasmania competitors between 2021 and 2022 found safety, course design and eligibility of vehicles and drivers were key concerns.
In the Northern Territory, an inquest into the death of a spectator at the Finke Desert Race in 2021 heard peak body Motorsports Australia failed to do enough to keep people safe at the remote event.
Mr Douglas said there was a strict safety checklist drivers had to pass before stepping onto the track, but the sport always carried a risk.
"There's not a lot of opportunity to get too crazy, because if you do, you get pulled off the track," he said.
"But it's a dangerous operation, I'm not walking the dog in the park, I'm driving a 1,000 plus horsepower burn out car."
Facing 'unknowns' on the road
Vice-president of the Ipswich West Moreton Auto Club Kevin Parkes said fatal incidents rocked the close-knit racing community.
"Motorsport is dangerous, but we take every precaution possible to make sure it's a safe environment," he said.
The car fanatic, who has been involved in his club for 23 years, said the sport attracts racers as young as 14 and as old as 77.
"They come here, burn up some energy and get all of that out of their systems on a regular basis, so they don't do silly things on their own," he said.
While the sport carried risk, he said regular drivers took a risk every time they stepped onto the motorway.
Data from the Queensland government showed 202 people have died on state roads so far in 2023.
"Everything on the road is unknown," Mr Parkes said.
"You don't know who's driving anywhere … on a racetrack it's controlled and supervised.
"The best thing to do [when there's a crash] is to see whether or not there's anything you can learn from that particular incident.
"You, the driver, are responsible for how fast you go."

Kyle Vogt resignation —
After robotaxi dragged pedestrian 20 feet, cruise founder and ceo resigns, gm-owned cruise "failed to disclose" full video and key crash details, dmv said..
Jon Brodkin - Nov 20, 2023 6:07 pm UTC
The CEO of self-driving car firm Cruise resigned yesterday following an accident in which a Cruise robotaxi dragged a pedestrian 20 feet. California officials accused Cruise of withholding key information and video after the accident, and the company's self-driving operations are on hold while federal authorities investigate.
"Today I resigned from my position as CEO of Cruise," co-founder Kyle Vogt wrote in a post on twitter.com . "The startup I launched in my garage has given over 250,000 driverless rides across several cities, with each ride inspiring people with a small taste of the future," he also wrote.
Cruise is owned by General Motors, which bought the company in 2016. Vogt expressed optimism about Cruise's future without him, saying the team is "executing on a solid, multi-year roadmap and an exciting product vision."
"As for what's next for me, I plan to spend time with my family and explore some new ideas. Thanks for the great ride!" Vogt wrote.
On Saturday, one day before resigning, Vogt reportedly apologized to staff in an email. "As CEO, I take responsibility for the situation Cruise is in today. There are no excuses, and there is no sugar coating what has happened. We need to double down on safety, transparency, and community engagement," he wrote in the email quoted by Reuters .
Robotaxi kept moving after hitting woman
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) last month suspended Cruise's permits for autonomous vehicle deployment and driverless testing. Cruise subsequently announced a "pause" of all of its driverless operations in the US, which includes San Francisco, Austin, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, and Miami. Cruise said the pause affects about 70 vehicles.
The DMV action came three weeks after a Cruise vehicle hit and dragged a pedestrian in San Francisco. A woman entered a crosswalk at nighttime and was hit by two cars, the second of which was the Cruise vehicle. First, a Nissan Sentra "tragically struck and propelled the pedestrian into the path of the AV," Cruise said in a description of the incident .
The Cruise vehicle then moved "rightward before braking aggressively, but still made contact with the pedestrian," the company said. "The AV detected a collision, bringing the vehicle to a stop; then attempted to pull over to avoid causing further road safety issues, pulling the individual forward approximately 20 feet."
The accident happened at 9:29 pm on October 2. The Nissan driver fled the scene, and Cruise said it was sharing information with authorities to help them track down the hit-and-run driver. The woman suffered severe injuries and was reportedly still in "serious condition" at San Francisco General Hospital in late October.
In an order of suspension that was published by Vice , the California DMV said that in a meeting on October 3, "Cruise failed to disclose that the AV executed a pullover maneuver that increased the risk of, and may have caused, further injury to a pedestrian. Cruise's omission hinders the ability of the department to effectively and timely evaluate the safe operation of Cruise's vehicles and puts the safety of the public at risk."
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on October 16 opened an investigation into Cruise vehicles after receiving reports of two pedestrian injuries, including the October 2 incident. The Cruise cars "may not have exercised appropriate caution around pedestrians in the roadway," the agency said. Another Cruise robotaxi hit a fire truck in San Francisco in August.

Cruise recalls all self-driving cars after grisly accident and California ban
All 950 of the General Motors subsidiary’s autonomous cars will be taken off roads for a software update
General Motors’ Cruise autonomous vehicle unit is recalling all 950 of its cars to update software after one of them dragged a pedestrian to the side of a San Francisco street in early October and a subsequent ban by California regulators.
The company said in documents posted by US safety regulators on Wednesday that with the updated software, Cruise vehicles will remain stationary should a similar incident occur in the future.
The 2 October crash prompted Cruise to suspend driverless operations nationwide after California regulators found that its cars posed a danger to public safety. The state’s department of motor vehicles revoked the license for Cruise, which was transporting passengers without human drivers throughout San Francisco.
In the crash, another vehicle with a person behind the wheel struck a pedestrian, sending the person into the path of a Cruise autonomous vehicle. The Cruise initially stopped but still hit the person. But it then pulled to the right to get out of traffic, pulling the person about 20ft (six meters) forward. The pedestrian was pinned under one of the Cruise vehicle’s tires and was critically injured.
Cruise says in documents posted by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it already has updated software in test vehicles that are being supervised by human safety drivers. The driverless fleet will get the new software before resuming operations, the company says.
In a statement on Wednesday, the GM unit said that it did the recall even though it determined that a similar crash with a risk of serious injury could happen again every 10m to 100m miles without the update.
“We strive to continually improve and to make these events even rarer,” the statement said. “As our software continues to improve, it is likely we will file additional recalls to inform both NHTSA and the public of updates to enhance safety across our fleet.”
Cruise said that after examining its system, it has decided to add a chief safety officer, hire a law firm to review its response to the October crash, appoint a third-party engineering firm to find the technical cause, and adopt companywide “pillars” to focus on safety and transparency.
Problems at Cruise could slow the deployment of fully autonomous vehicles that carry passengers without human drivers on board. It also could bring stronger federal regulation of the vehicles, which are carrying passengers in more cities nationwide.
NHTSA opened an investigation on 16 October into four reports that Cruise vehicles may not exercise proper caution around pedestrians. Agency documents cited two injuries, including the 2 October crash. The complaints involved vehicles operating autonomously and “encroaching on pedestrians present in or entering roadways, including pedestrian crosswalks in the proximity of the intended travel path of the vehicles”, the agency said.
In documents filed with NHTSA, Cruise said its automated driving system was designed in some cases to pull over and out of traffic to minimize safety risks and disruption after a crash, with the response dependent on the characteristics of the crash. But in certain circumstances such as a pedestrian positioned on the ground in the vehicle’s path, pulling over is not the desired response.
The Cruise system “inaccurately characterized the collision as a lateral collision and commanded the AV to attempt to pull over out of traffic, pulling the individual forward rather than remaining stationary,” the company said.
While the department of motor vehicles did not elaborate on specific reasons for its suspension of Cruise’s license, the agency accused Cruise of misrepresenting safety information about the autonomous technology in its vehicles. The revocation followed a series of incidents that heightened concerns about the hazards and inconveniences caused by Cruise’s robotaxis.
The DMV and others have accused Cruise of not initially sharing all video footage of the accident, but the robotaxi operator pushed back – saying it disclosed the full video to state and federal officials.
General Motors Co, has ambitious goals for Cruise. The Detroit automaker had been expecting annual revenue of $1bn from Cruise by 2025 – a big jump from the $106m in revenue last year.
GM recently paused production of the Origin, a fully autonomous van designed for Cruise to carry multiple passengers. The company is expected to resume production at a Detroit-area factory once Cruise resumes autonomous ride-hailing.

‘Everybody was getting frustrated': Fatal boat crash leaves cruise passengers stranded
Nbc6 responds shares tips to keep in mind when booking your next cruise trip, by yaima crespo • published june 26, 2023 • updated on june 26, 2023 at 9:13 pm.
A deadly crash between a boat and the Fisher Island Ferry led to the shutdown of the Port of Miami and left many cruise passengers stranded for hours.
"There was no empathy for the people. And everybody was getting frustrated," Thomas Sindoni, a passenger, told NBC6 Responds.
What was meant to be the finale of an eight-day Caribbean cruise turned into frustration for Sindoni and his family.
They, along with hundreds of other passengers, spent hours waiting to either disembark or board their cruise ships.

Sindoni shared a video with NBC6 showing how tempers flared inside the ship as passengers waited to disembark.
"…There were arguments, fights, and people pushing and cutting in line," Sindoni said. "I just sat down in the corner because I had my daughter. And it was very frustrating."
Sindoni says he is now reconsidering future cruise vacations.
"It makes me think,” Sindoni said. “I used to love cruises because, you know, it's like a whole experience and they treat you beautifully.”

Cruise lines have their own policies when it comes to unforeseen events and there is no federal government agency that regulates cruise customer service issues.
But The Federal Maritime Commission recommends potential passengers to take certain steps before booking their next cruise trip to be as prepared as possible.
Among them, getting travel insurance.
It will generally cover passenger cancellations for specific reasons, such as illness or various family emergencies. The scope of coverage can vary widely depending on the plan.
You can also look into cruise cancellation waivers. These are not the same as insurance policies, instead they operate on a fee basis, where the cruise line waives the cancellation schedule and refunds the entire fare to the customer under certain circumstances.
And consider booking your cruise using a credit card, which offers more protections than using a debit card or cash, especially during such unforeseen circumstances.
NBC6 reached out to several cruise lines impacted by the crash and asked about their policies in this type of cases:
A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line told NBC6 Responds: “Throughout the day, we communicated directly with our guests as updated information became available. We embarked our guests last night and they sailed on their cruise.”
MSC Seascape told NBC6 guests onboard:
- Retained access to their cabins (and restrooms) throughout the day all the way up until disembarking the ship
- Public restrooms throughout the ship also remained open
- Nine bars onboard were open and providing access to a full complement of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (including water)
- The buffet was open for breakfast and had its hours extended during that time, was open again from 11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., and opened again from 7 p.m. onward to ensure guests were fed as disembarkation took place. (The buffet also had water and other beverages available)
- The captain and cruise director made announcements regarding the status of operations in the channel and eventual disembarkation on 15-minute intervals in English, Italian, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese
- Pools and Jacuzzis were opened for guests to enjoy
- Movies were shown
- Live music was performed
- The Kids Club was open
- Free Wi-Fi was available throughout the day to ensure guests were able to communicate as needed
And said guests arriving for departure on the following cruise:
- Began receiving regular text messages and robocalls at 8:40 a.m., advising them of the situation at Port of Miami and asking them not to come to the terminal until further notice, which continued throughout the morning and afternoon
- Guests who chose to come early received regular updates in the terminal via announcements made in English, Spanish and Italian
- Guests at the terminal also received a printed letter recommending they go to nearby Bayside Marketplace (as Port of Miami’s terminals are not equipped with food facilities) and letting them know they would each receive a $20 onboard credit for the cruise to offset the cost of eating while waiting for embarkation to commence

Cruise hid video of woman being dragged along San Francisco street, DMV says
- Copy link to this article
California Department of Motor Vehicles officials say Cruise didn't show regulators complete footage of an Oct. 2 incident in Downtown San Francisco where a robotaxi dragged a woman after she was hit by a human driver.
The DMV suspended Cruise's driverless taxi permits on Tuesday morning, immediately halting both the company’s robotaxi deployment and its ability to test its autonomous vehicles without a safety driver present. The suspension affects not only Cruise's operations in San Francisco, but also across the state.
The DMV linked the company’s suspension to the Oct. 2 hit-and-run where a woman was struck by a human driver and was thrown into the path of the AV—named Panini—near Fifth and Market Streets.
After the point of impact, the Cruise vehicle came to a stop with the woman trapped underneath. However, the Cruise then attempted to pull over while the pedestrian was under the vehicle, which dragged her for around 20 feet at a speed of 7 mph before coming to a final stop.
According to orders of suspension sent to Cruise on Tuesday, the DMV wrote that it met with Cruise representatives and the California Highway Patrol to discuss the accident before being shown footage captured by the AV’s onboard cameras.
RELATED : Explainer: A Brief History of Robotaxis in San Francisco
However, the video that was initially shown ran only to the point when the Cruise stopped for the first time.
"Footage of the subsequent movement of the AV to perform a pullover maneuver was not shown to the [DMV] and Cruise did not disclose that any additional movement of the vehicle had occurred after the initial stop," the DMV wrote in the order.
The DMV wrote that it learned of the subsequent movement "via discussion with another government agency."
The company disputes that it hid the footage or information from the DMV. Cruise spokesperson Hannah Lindlow said the company showed the complete video to the DMV multiple times during a meeting on Oct. 3 and later provided a copy of the full video to the agency.
READ MORE: Authorities ID Man Who Died After Robotaxi Allegedly Blocked San Francisco Ambulance
Cruise representatives noted that the human driver who initially struck the pedestrian is still at large. Cruise employees "are currently doing an analysis to identify potential enhancements to the AV’s response to this kind of extremely rare event."
In laying out the basis for Cruise’s suspension, the DMV cited a number of statutes in the California Code of Regulations. In its explanation of how Cruise’s vehicles were unsafe for the public, the DMV referred to the vehicle pulling over, which "increased the risk of and may have caused further injury to the pedestrian."
Firefighters responded to Fifth and Market at 9:35 p.m. within 60 seconds and worked to secure the vehicle and free the woman. She was then transported to San Francisco General Hospital with "multiple traumatic injuries," San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Justin Schorr said at the time.
The Standard was unable to confirm the woman's condition on Tuesday.
The omission of additional information and footage in Cruise’s initial meeting with DMV "hinders the ability of the department to effectively and timely evaluate the safe operation of Cruise’s vehicles and puts the safety of the public at risk," the order stated.
The DMV said Cruise has five days to request a hearing over its deployment permit and up to 60 days to request a hearing for its driverless testing permit.
“To reinstate their permits, Cruise will need to provide the department with information regarding how it has addressed the deficiencies that led to the suspensions,” according to the DMV.
"When there is an unreasonable risk to public safety, the DMV can immediately suspend or revoke permits. There is no set time for a suspension," the department wrote in a statement. As a result of the suspension, law enforcement officers can impound any Cruise autonomous vehicle operating without a driver.
According to an earnings report from Cruise’s parent company, General Motors, Cruise earned $25 million in revenue in the third quarter against $833 million in costs and expenses. Cruise reported $791 million of losses between July and September before taxes.

Judge Asks Cruise Why It ‘Misled’ Regulators Over October Crash
A California administrative law judge has ordered Cruise, the embattled autonomous vehicle subsidiary of General Motors, to explain why it “ misled ” a key state regulatory agency in the wake of an October incident where a Cruise car dragged a woman 20 feet after she’d already been hit by a car.
According to a 13-page ruling issued Friday, a Cruise manager informed the California Public Utilities Commission about the incident the day after it occurred, but “omitted” key information: “that the Cruise AV had engaged in the pullover maneuver which resulted in the pedestrian being dragged an additional 20 feet at 7 mph.” The pedestrian was hospitalized in critical condition.
“[Cruise was] willfully engaged in a coverup of material information that should have been forthcoming to state regulators,” San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin told Forbes .
Now, Judge Robert Mason has ordered that the company argue “why Cruise should not be fined, penalized, and/or receive other regulatory sanctions for failing to provide complete information to the [California Public Utilities] Commission.” The company could face fines of $100,000 or more.
After Forbes reported the October 2nd incident, the CPUC and the California DMV revoked Cruise’s operating permit later that month, immediately halting its ability to operate robotaxis in its largest market at the time and sending the company into a tailspin. The DMV said on October 24 that Cruise’s cars were “not safe for the public’s operation” and that they pose “an unreasonable risk to the public.” Two days later, the company halted all of its autonomous operations nationwide as a voluntary measure.
By early November, Cruise’s then-CEO Kyle Vogt, told employees in an all-hands call leaked to Forbes that there would be layoffs forthcoming. But before the end of the month Vogt, and his other cofounder, Dan Kan, resigned from the company.
Last week, GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, told investors that Cruise’s parent company would be spending “substantially lower” amounts of money on Cruise in 2024 than it did this year.
“We must rebuild trust with regulators at the local, state and federal levels, as well as with the first responders and the communities in which Cruise will operate,” she said.
Erik Moser, a Cruise spokesperson, said in an emailed statement sent to Forbes on Sunday evening that the company is “committed to rebuilding trust with our regulators.” However, he also told Forbes that while the company has already hired Quinn Emmanuel, an outside law firm, to “examine Cruise’s response to the October 2 incident,” the company would not commit to publicly releasing the law firm’s findings.
General Motors did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment on Sunday evening.
Previously, Navideh Forghani, a Cruise spokesperson, told Forbes that the company had “proactively shared information” with both state and federal agencies.
The pedestrian who was hit on October 2, whose identity remains unknown, remains in the hospital, but is in “good condition” as of November 28, according to a spokesperson from the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
Cruise has been ordered to provide a written response to the ruling by December 18 and appear at a hearing on February 6.

NASA has a tool that shows how the eclipse will look in your area. Just enter your zip code.
Univision has a more interactive tool that simulates the view as the moon moves across the sun.
“Enter your zip code below and you’ll be able to see a re-creation of the eclipse from your city,” the news organization wrote . You can also click here .
For a mobile-friendly or full-screen version of NASA’s interactive map, visit go.nasa.gov/EclipseExplorer .
Eclipse2024.org also has an interactive tool that illustrates what the eclipse will look from any venue in the United States.
Monday will be the last time until 2044 that a total eclipse can be viewed in the contiguous United States.

Powercruise.
Drag race, drift and skid – Brainerd International Raceway is once again set to come alive to the sound of huge horsepower running wild as hundreds of entrants take to the track May 17-19 & July 26-28 for Powercruise.
Unique in the world of car and driving events, Powercruise is a weekend-long horsepower party that lets entrants drive their cars the way they were built to be driven, without fear of breaking the law. Featuring cruising sessions, burnouts, off-street racing and the always exciting powerskid competition, Powercruise is something for all fans of modified cars to enjoy.
There’s spectacular off-track entertainment, too, including Show-n-Go awards, a Horsepower Dyno Shootout as well as the ever-popular Miss Powercruise Competition to keep everyone busy over the action-packed three-day event.
Cruise sessions allow entrants to drive their cars alongside some of the toughest automotive hardware in the land. Muscle cars, hot rods, imports, drag cars, blown, bottled, turbo-charged and naturally aspirated, and everything in between can be found on-track with their petrol head owners able to take passengers along for the ride of their life.
In addition to the cruising sessions, Powercruise features some wild demonstrations of horsepower during the Powerskid Contest where entrants fry the tires off their car in a straight line for as far as they can. There’s also the Off-Street Drags, which runs like an old-style street drag, and drifting, tire-popping “Aussie-style” burnouts, a show and shine and much more.
