10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

one week greece cruise

Courtesy of Variety Cruises

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Meet the Expert

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Step back in time on your cruise to Greece. Visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and other ancient ruins. Follow your tour with an open-air dinner in the Plaka neighborhood.

Crete (Souda), Greece

On the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Souda beckons with a romantic Venetian harbor, Old Town’s tangle of streets, and a 500-year-old lighthouse.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

The region reveals what it means to be Greek: traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, and crystal blue seas.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is a top choice among the glamourous. Chic tavernas with open terraces line the sea and after the sun dips down, the island sizzles with youthful energy.

Kerkira (Corfu), Greece

Come ashore to Corfu on your Greek Islands cruise, a muse for some of history’s most notable writers. Be inspired with a swim in its azure waters or wander verdant, cypress-dotted hills.

Rhodes, Greece

Even without its immense Helios statue, Rhodes remains one of the most-visited Greek islands with its white-sand beaches, glittering coves and fascinating ruins.

Thira (Santorini), Greece

Santorini has a dizzying array of archeological treasures, sun-bleached villages and world-renowned wines. To top it all, it’s home to one of the most beautiful volcanic calderas in the world.

Gythion (Sparta), Greece

Once the port of ancient Sparta, this lovely fishing town draws its name from gi theon, which means “land of the gods” in Greek. It’s the entryway to the rugged, mountainous realm of the Spartans—the fiercely independent people who rejected foreign rule time and time again.

Kavala (Neapolis), Greece

Northern Greece is often overlooked as a Greek Isle cruise destination, and many will not even have heard of the Macedonian port of Kavála. But the city, and the region it opens into, are both picturesque and culturally important, with a history that encompasses classical times as well as the more modern era.

Mytilene, Nisos Lesbos

Lesbos, Greece is well known for olives and ouzo production, and visitors can see evidence of both everywhere. The island's charms extend beyond those pleasures, though: It’s a beautiful place of open plains, sweeping hills, and sandy beaches with views of Turkey across the water.

Pylos, Greece

Pine-covered hills wrap around the lovely town of Pylos (often referred to as Navarino, its Italian name), in the Messenia region of Greece's Peloponnese. Cobblestoned streets lead down to the harbor, where outdoor cafés overlook the bay. This pleasant scene, however, belies a turbulent history.

It’s no wonder the Greek Islands have always been a perennial favorite of travelers. Greece is a magical, romantic destination where you can wander alongside stunning coastlines, explore the ruins of ancient cultures, and dine on fresh Mediterranean cuisine all in one vacation.

On one of our Greek Island cruises, explore far-flung beaches, drift out to sea on catamarans and kayaks, and duck into tiny tavernas where you can eat and drink like a local. From the sun-soaked stone buildings in Santorini to the white-sand beaches that beckon in Mykonos, a Greece cruise is the best way to experience the captivating Greek Islands.

Greek Island Cruise Highlights

Once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

There is no shortage of unforgettable experiences to be had in Greece. Its seascapes and cityscapes are wondrous, from the mighty ruins of the Acropolis to the buzzing, modern city center of Athens. Visit an olive farm in Crete, or embark on a tour of Mykonos Town’s organic wineries. Or, take an intimate, exclusive cooking lesson on how to make local favorites in Santorini’s main square, right in the middle of it all.

Ancient History

Greece is a world-renowned destination for history buffs. Stroll through the Acropolis and marvel at human achievement, or visit the Museum of Cycladic Art to study Aegean and Cypriot artifacts. Examine the 400-year-old remains of a town buried under volcanic ash outside of Santorini. Explore the historic forts of Corfu, or hop on a boat ride to Delos, said to be the birthplace of Apollo.

Natural Wonders

Discover Elafonisi Beach, a paradise of pink, powdery sand and shallow waters off the island of Crete. Take an unforgettable cruise through the impressive Corinth Canal on a shore excursion in Athens. Stand in awe at the base of Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and the fabled home of the Greek gods. In Zakynthos, don’t miss a visit to the awe-inspiring Shipwreck Beach, which often tops best-of lists.

Featured Ports

Santorini, Greece

Travelers flock to Santorini for its cobalt-roofed homes, friendly locals, and fine local wine. On this crescent-shaped island, soak up the sun at black-sand beaches like Perissa, or spend a day at the Santorini Caldera, one of the only places in the world to see submerged remnants of an erupted volcano. Sample Greek wines at family-owned wineries dotting the Aegean coast, and take the time to marvel at the incredible panoramas all around you.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is the quintessential Mediterranean beach destination. Choose your favorite to spend the day on, or book a sailing excursion to go beach hopping. Take a day trip beyond Mykonos to the nearby island of Delos, an uninhabited archeological site said to be the birthplace of Greek gods. Experience an authentic side of the island with a home-cooking class, where you’ll sample and prepare delicious local specialties.

Athens, Greece

To visit the capital of Greece is to take a trip back in time, whether you’re exploring the narrow streets of the Plaka District or hiking the Acropolis for well-earned views of the Parthenon. After a day of exploration, pop into a taverna for Mediterranean meze and a cold beer.

Itinerary: one perfect week in greek islands.

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared for you this 1 week Greek islands itinerary. During your 6, 7 or 8 days trip, you will visit the world famous Santorini island as well as another island of the Cyclades archipelago such as Amorgos , Paros or Naxos (according to your interests).

In this guide, in addition to the best things to do on each islands , I will also give you all my best tips and accommodation suggestions depending on your budget.

So, what’s the best Greek islands hopping itinerary for 1 week?

Best hotels in Oia

Best hotels in fira, other best places to stay in santorini island, best hotels in katapola, best hotels in aegiali, where to stay in naxos, best hotels in parikia, best hotels in naoussa, greece tours, renting a boat in the cyclades, cyclades (greek islands), 1) santorini (3 days).

If you want to visit the Greek islands (Cyclades) in 1 week, you have to spend a few days in the mythical island of Santorini.

As there is an international airport in Santorini , the easiest way to get to the island is to directly fly there. Not having to take the ferry from Athens will save you 1 full day. Pretty good for a 1 week trip!

Next thing: the best way to visit Santorini in 3 days is to rent a car.

Sure, you can take the bus to go around Santorini , but they are often so crowded that they don’t take passengers anymore. That means you will have to wait for the next one, 30 minutes later and be lucky enough to get a seat this time.

As a result, with the bus, you will waste a lot of time during these 3 days.

If you want to rent a car in Greece , you should use Booking.com Cars website . It’s the one I use every time, as it allows me to easily compare all car rental agencies prices. In just 1 click , you can check the price of all rental cars offers available in Santorini’s Airport for example. Very simple and useful!

When you book your car, don’t forget to choose the Full Protection Insurance to be fully refunded in case of accident or theft – Tested and approved, they refunded me more than 1200 euros in total!

If you already have your travel dates, you should book your car right now to get the best prices. It doesn’t commit you to anything, as modifying or cancelling your booking is free.

Just click the button below to compare the car rental prices for 3 days in Santorini.

So, here is the best itinerary to visit Santorini, the most famous and touristic Greek Island.

On your 1st day, go to Fira , a small town located on the edge of the caldera. It’s one of the 2 most visited villages of the island!

There, you will be amazed by the postcard scenery of this typical Cycladic village. You will for sure fall in love with the white and blue houses and churches.

Walk around the village and follow the walking trail that goes from Fira to Firostefani and Imerovigli to enjoy splendid viewpoints.

If you wish, you can continue on the walking trail that goes from Imerovigli to Oia town.

The view on the caldera is so amazing that you will have to stop and take pictures every 2 minutes! The full Fira to Oia trail is simply the most beautiful hike to do in Santorini.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can also take your car back and drive to Oia.

Oia is the 2nd village you must visit on the island. It’s the best place to admire the sunset in Santorini! If you manage to find a good spot, sit down and don’t leave it 😋. Every evening, thousands of people are coming to Oia to enjoy this magnificent spectacle.

Spend the night in Santorini.

Santorini

For your 2nd day of your one week Greek islands itinerary, you should do a boat trip around Santorini. The most famous cruise goes to the 3 best places to visit around the island:

  • The first stop is Nea Kameni island. There, you can walk to the top of the crater of a still active volcano!
  • The next  stop of the day will allow you to swim in the hot springs.
  • Then you will go to Therasia, the island located right in front of Santorini.

This 37€ per person tour includes the transfer from your hotel, the cruise with an audio guide, and the 3 activities.

As about every tourist visiting Santorini wants to do this cruise (especially during high season), you must book your tour in advance. You can book it online by clicking the button below.

You can also choose a luxury version of the cruise. You will sail on a catamaran and at the end of the day, you will admire the sunset from the sea!

Spend a 2nd night in Santorini

Boat trip Santorini

It’s now the 3rd day of your Greek Islands one week itinerary. Today, you will do a road trip in Santorini to visit the rest of the island.

Here are the best things to do:

  • Visit the island’s picturesque villages: Pyrgos, Megalohori and Emporio.
  • Discover the archaeological sites of Akrotiri (often compared to Pompeii, in Italy ), and the Ancient Thera.
  • Book an oenology tour in small group (8 people max.) to taste 12 of the best Santorini’s wines.  Book it here!
  • The Red Beach , with its ocre cliffs
  • Kamari and Perissa beaches , famous for their volcanic black sand
  • Monolithos Beach and its shallow waters, the best if you are traveling with children.

Spend one last night in Santorini.

If you want more details about the best things to do in Santorini, you should read my article:  Visit Santorini: the definitive guide.

Where to stay in Santorini

You must know that staying in Santorini, especially in the villages of the caldera like Oia and Fira , is quite expensive.

If you want a less expensive accommodation , it’s better to choose a hotel outside these 2 cities .

And of course, even more in Santorini than in any other place, book your hotels as early as possible!

To help you choose, I have made a selection of the best hotels in Santorini , depending on where you want to stay and your budget.

  • Aethrio Hotel: Located in Oia, only a few steps away from the main square. You can rent double rooms, studio flats or apartments with balcony for most of them. The price starts from 160€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: the swimming pool, the large rooms, the rooftop to admire the sunset. It’s one of the cheapest places in Oia, and it offers a great value for money!
  • Caldera Premium Villas: Located in the centre of Oia. You will love the troglodyte suites with a breathtaking view of the sea and the caldera, starting from 290€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: the pool, the design of the rooms, and the location.
  • Theodora Suites Apartment: Located in the heart of the city. Studio flats with small kitchen, fridge, private terrace and hot tub, starting from 350€, breakfast included. What I loved: the hot tubs, the breathtaking view, the kind staff.
  • Andronis Boutique Hotel: 5-star hotel located in Oia. You’ll enjoy large suites with a view of the caldera, private balcony and private hot tub or pool, starting from 800€ with breakfast included. Strong points: the idyllic scenery and the calm. It’s my recommendation for a one-week romantic stay in Greece!
  • Katikies Hotel – The Leading Hotels of the World: This luxurious hotel offers rooms and suites with a great view, bathtub and spa. The price starts from 1000€ with breakfast included. What I loved: the pools, the spas, the splendid views and the food! It’s my recommendation for a luxury stay in Santorini!

2) Visit another island in the Cyclades (3 days)

For the 2nd stage of your 7 days Greek islands itinerary, you will visit another island of the Cyclades archipelago:

3 islands can easily be accessed by boat from Santorini, so you will need to choose  the one that suits you best:

  • Amorgos for hiking and beach lovers (the wildest island)
  • Naxos, if you prefer to relax at the beach (more private beaches/beach clubs)
  • Paros, if you like hiking, going to the beach and visit picturesque mountain villages.

Option 1: Amorgos (3 days)

Amorgos is located only 1 hour away from Santorini by ferry boat.

To check the schedules and book your ferry , you need to use Ferries In Greece website . Be careful during your reservation: as Amorgos has 2 ports, Katapola and Aegiali, you might arrive in one and leave from the other.

Amorgos is especially famous for its gorgeous walking trails. However, for your first day, I recommend you to do a road trip around the island . It’s the best way to get a good grasp of what the place has to offer!

You can rent your car directly at the port when you will arrive.

During this 1st day in Amorgos, you can:

  • Walk in Katapola, the main port of the island
  • Visit Hora, the capital, and its numerous old windmills
  • Have an amazing lunch in one of the village’s typical taverns
  • Go to the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa
  • Go have a look at Agia Ana cove, close to the monastery
  • Follow the Southern road to Kalotaritissa, a very nice beach for swimming. Don’t miss the “The Big Blue” movie ship wreck!

Spend a night in Amorgos.

Monastery Panagia Hozoviotissa

For your 2 other days in Amorgos, enjoy the many marked trails of the Island.

There are 7 main trails you will find on  Amorgos’ official website . You will also find every information you need about the routes and difficulty levels.

You can also enjoy some time at the beach during these 2 days!

Spend 2 other nights in Amorgos.

The island is located about 1h30 from Santorini by ferry boat.

Before going to Apiranthos , from Filoti , you can hike to the top of Mount Zeus, the highest point of the Cyclades. Naxos’ most famous hike starts at “Aria Spring” and takes about 1h30.

Enjoy the rest of your day near Moutsouna, at one of the East coast beaches.

Spend a 2nd night in Naxos.

The next day, you will visit the Southern part of the island.

In the morning, you can discover 3 villages:

  • Lefkes, one of the most beautiful villages in Paros

  • Marpissa, another lovely Cycladic village.

You can take your car to visit each village, or walk on the Byzantine trail that connects the 3, if you want to do a bit of hiking!

Have your lunch break at the port of Piso Livadi. The speciality there is fresh grilled fishes and seafood. It’s delicious!

In the afternoon, just relax at the beach. You can either go to Golden Beach, Logaras or Faragas!

Spend a 2nd night in Paros.

Piso Livadi

For your last day in Paros, also the last day of your Greek Islands Itinerary, how about a boat trip around Paros and Antiparos?

Hi. We are looking at up to 28 days island hopping through the Cyclades in October. Looking at your summary of the Cyclades we could do Paros (4), Naxos (4), Amorgos (3), Santorini (3), Milos (5). This leaves 9 days . Maybe 2 more islands or more time at the ones mentioned? Where else would you suggest how long & for? Regards Grant

Vincent

In addition to these islands, you should maybe add Crete, in order to enjoy something a bit different than the Cyclades.

As it’s quite big, you can easily spend the 9 remaining days there!

There are ferries going there from Santorini in about 2h30.

If you prefer to do more Cyclades islands, you Should go to Tinos and Andros, they are really quiet and preserved from mass tourism!

You can have a look at all my Cyclades islands travel guides here: Cyclades guides.

An important thing: as you will go to the Cyclades islands in October, you should check the ferries schedules in order to define your itinerary: there are a lot less ferries than during the high season, so they will define which islands you can visit or not.

You can check them here: Ferries in Greece .

Enjoy your trip, and if you have other questions, don’t hesitate!

Ancient Greece, and more specifically many of the islands in the Aegean Sea, is long thought of as to have been the Cradle of Western Civilization. Filled with oodles of isles (most notably the collection which makes up the Cyclades), a glittering ocean and a whole load of history, here’s a quick guide to island hopping in Greece, as well as things to know before you go and essentials you must pack for your Greek Islands adventure!

One Week Island Hopping in Greece: Travel itinerary, where to go, when to visit and how to see as many of the Cyclades Islands in Southern Europe!

Travel Tips for Island Hopping in Greece

Day 1: set sail from piraeus, day 2: mykonos, day 3: milos, days 4 & 5: santorini, day 6: heraklion, crete, day 7: samos, best time to go island hopping in greece, how to go island hopping in greece.

There are several ways you can go about booking to go island hopping in Greece. While many people opt to go the DIY self-made route, ensuring that they’ll be able to enjoy all of the ‘must-see’ items on their Greece bucket list, others prefer to embark on cruises, which means that all of the small details are taken care of for you, not to mention all food offerings and accommodation options!

You will surely not be disappointed should you opt to visit Greece, though there are a number of things to consider while planning your trip, such as the best time of the year to visit and other travel considerations. Check out our guide to the best of Greece tips for more information and inspiration!

One week island hopping in Greece Itinerary

I’ve just spent a week-long sailing through the Aegean, a place known for its art and culture, and a place where the islands have been inhabited for millennia. Complete with sandy stretches, volcanic geology and all of the stunning islands you could ever ask for, there’s no better place in the world to go island hopping!

One Week Island Hopping in Greece: Travel itinerary, where to go, when to visit and how to see as many of the Cyclades Islands in Southern Europe!

All aboard! Ships towards the Cyclades Islands regularly depart from Piraeus, a port town not far from the Greek capital of Athens. Easy to reach from Athens International Airport, Piraeus (meaning ‘the place over the passage’) was inhabited in Ancient times as  Πειραιεύς ,  Peiraieús  and it’s thought that people have lived in the area since for well over four and a half thousand years .

One Week Island Hopping in Greece: Travel itinerary, where to go, when to visit and how to see as many of the Cyclades Islands in Southern Europe!

My first true taste of Greece came in the form of Mykonos, a dreamy island best-known for its iconic windmills , striking sunsets, and the capital city of the same name, Mykonos town.

Some of the very best things to do on the island include wandering through the narrow lanes among typically Greek architecture, sampling local Greek cuisine (think lots of sea-inspired menus!), and swimming in the crystal clear water.

Should you opt to visit Mykonos, just bear in mind that as one of the more popular Greek islands, it can get incredibly busy in the middle of the summer! As such, in order to truly enjoy Mykonos, I highly recommend visiting in May or October! For more island inspiration check out this sample one day itinerary for Mykonos.

Cruising the Aegean with Celestyal Cruises: A Complete Review of seven days in Greece

Milos is one of the lesser-known of the Cyclades Islands. And if it’s not already on your radar, then you definitely need to add this beautiful place to your European bucket list ASAP! For the island, which is also known as ‘Melos’  (or Μήλος in Greek)  has been inhabited almost consistently for some 12,000 years.

The Greek island is also allegedly the birthplace of Aphrodite. This legend came about thanks, in part, to the discovery of the Venus de Milo , a statue from antiquity which was rediscovered on the volcanic island during the 19th-century. Today, the marble statue can be found in the Louvre Museum in Paris .

So, if you want to soak up a heady combination of bright sun and ancient history then you should totally head to Milos. After all, there are ancient Catacombs to visit (which were used as burial chambers in Antiquity), as well as Roman ruins to discover. It’s also worth noting that Milos is home to plenty of charming towns and villages!

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, then consider hiring a boat for a day with some friends and discovering a different side of the island. Check here for some of the best-reviewed boat tours of Milos that you can book in advance.

Milos volcanic island, Aegean Sea, Greece

The most famous of all the Greek Islands is Santorini. Characterised by its rocky landscapes, volcanic beaches (of which several are formed of black sand), and beautiful hilltop villages, if you’ve seen a photo of Greece recently, it was likely snapped in Santorini!

Some of the very best things to do on the island include wandering around the village of Oia (i.e. where those  blue domes are located), sampling some local cuisine, and enjoying the view at sunset when candy colours dance across the sky and light up the Aegean Sea.

If you’re looking for another perspective on the island, and notably Oia, be sure to head to the village at sunrise for some snaps without the crowds! Otherwise, you should note that Oia is also where you’ll find the iconic blue domes of Santorini.

9 Epic Reasons to Visit Santorini, Greece_ Here are some of the best things to see and do and why you’ll fall in love with the beautiful Cycladic Island.

Crete is one of the more populated islands of the Aegean, while Heraklion is the capital and largest city on Crete. Second only to tourism, olive oil production is one of the biggest industries on the island. In fact, it’s estimated that there are some 35 million olive trees on the island and between 50 and 70 thousand tonnes of olive oil are produced here on an annual basis.

Elsewhere on the island, the Bronze Age Palace of Knossos is one of the most visited cultural sites in Greece. Also known as Cnossos, the place where the palace ruins now lie are thought to have been inhabited as early as 7000 BCE.

The Palace itself dates back to the Minoan period and the main building alone covered an area of up to three acres! And that’s not all! Instead, in Greek mythology, the Palace of Knossos is associated with King Minos and the Minotaur.

The legend tells that the King’s wife, Pasiphae, fell in love with a sacred bull (at that time, the bull was the most sacred of all of the animals) and as a result of a curse from the gods, fell pregnant with the bull’s child.

The resulting infant was half-man, half-bull. I.e. the Minotaur. With the body of a man and the head of a bull, no one was allowed to kill the queen’s son and so Minos had Daedalus construct a massive labyrinth from which the Minotaur wouldn’t be able to escape.

Rumour has it that the Palace of Knossos may well be where the labyrinth was located. Better yet, due to the complexity of the palace, it may well be the palace itself that was the labyrinth…

The hidden gem of the Aegean Sea, here in Samos the waters are some of the clearest that you’ll find anywhere in Europe. While there, some of our group remarked that the tropical nature of the island meant that it seemed like we had been magically transported to the Carribean!

a^{2}+b^{2}=c^{2},

Since antiquity, Samos has been famed for its vineyards and grapes have been cultivated on the island for millennia. Today, award-winning sweet wine is still produced on the island which lies just a mile from the coast of Turkey. If you want to learn more about the production of wine on the island (as well as sample some of the stuff for yourself), then head to the Samos Wine Museum (Μουσείο Κρασιού Σάμου).

One Week Island Hopping in Greece: Travel itinerary, where to go, when to visit and how to see as many of the Cyclades Islands in Southern Europe!

The hottest months of the year are July and August when temperatures can soar above forty degrees. This also happens to be ‘high season’ meaning that crowds are at their highest. While in Santorini, our tour guide informed us that some days in Santorini during the summer months, you literally can’t even walk down many of the narrow streets!

As such, in order to make the most of the weather, be sure to visit in May, early June, late September, October or November when everything is still open but you’ll get more of the place to yourself! The days are still fairly long and the weather is perfect for exploring (not too hot, nor too cold!)

9 Epic Reasons to Visit Santorini, Greece: Here are some of the best things to see and do and why you’ll fall in love with the beautiful Cycladic Island.

If you are looking for a more independent way to travel, then it’s certainly possible to plan your full trip from start to finish. Flights and ferry boats are both available from one island to another. However, island hopping in Greece can soon add up to astronomical costs (for example, flights between Santorini and Athens are much more expensive than those between Paris and Santorini!).

During my time island hopping across the Aegean Sea, I spent the entire week onboard a cruise with Celestyal Cruises. While many people (wrongly) believe that cruising isn’t for young people, it totally is! Pros of cruising include waking up in a new destination each morning and (quite literally) travelling with your hotel…

We are really glad that you liked our country Greece! We hope you will come again soon!

Great guide, Sophie! I totally agree with your suggestions on when to go island hopping in Greece. It is much better when the place is not packed with people. Paros, Naxos, Koufonisia, Santorini & Amorgos is a favourite Greek island combination for me. Another island combination I’ve liked a lot is Serfios, Sifnos, Milos, Santorini, Folegandros.

Nice post! island hopping sounds such a fantastic idea! I bet you had lots of fun.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amid Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

Discover the vibrant culture of Istanbul, Turkey, with a variety of excursions. Explore the iconic Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, marvel at the treasures in Topkapi Palace, or wander through the bustling Grand Bazaar. Take a scenic Bosphorus Cruise, visit the ancient Underground Cistern, or experience a traditional Turkish breakfast. Each excursion offers a unique glimpse into Istanbul's rich history and dynamic present. Immerse yourself in the magic of this transcontinental city on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a European cruise from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed a return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Day 1:  Lefkas

You will start your Greek Islands sailing holiday in Lefkas town on Lefkada Island. If you arrive early, you can explore the wonderful Greek Island and her beautiful postcard beaches.

If you have a day or two on the island before your trip, be sure to hire a car and explore the island, you'll have fantastic views, perfect beaches and you'll be spoiled for choice with the local restaurants.

After checking in, we're off to Vathy on Meganisi.

Our first stop of your Greece sailing vacation is Vathy in Meganisi.  Vathy is a picturesque village of Meganisi island and its port welcomes private yachts throughout summer. You can stroll along the promenade and enjoy a local meal in one of the many fish tavernas and enjoy the hospitality of the locals.

In the morning we'll set sail off for the Blue Caves of Lefkas to kick-start your Greek Sailing Holiday in style! Prepared to be amazed.

Day 2:  Vathy

Sailing the Greek Islands is a magical event, so while on your yacht charter, we will take you to a place of legend; Ithica, the home of Odysseus, the King who left his wife and home in pursuit of victory at the battle of Troy.

Ithaca is a peaceful island, ideal for relaxing and enjoying a slower pace of life and some of the meals the local tavernas prepare stay true to the ancient recipes of an older time.

On our way to Vathy, we'll stop off to explore the Blue Caves!

Day 3:  Sami

Whilst on your private yacht for the week, no trip is complete without stopping at Kefalonia, which is the largest island in the Ionian Sea.

Famous for it’s exotic beaches, including Antisamos and Skala are stunningly beautiful beaches we’ll pass on the way to Sami, where you can make your way to the Melissani Cave,  lounge on the glorious beaches or explore the island at your own pace.

Day 4:  Fiskardo

Fiskardo must have THE BEST RESTAURANTS in the Ionian!  We almost need to stay a week to explore all the restaurants here.  This isn’t a secret and a lot of boats come to this special little place, so we need to get there early if we want to get a place on the town quay. No Greek sailing holiday is complete without stopping here for dinner. Greek Island sailing holidays are about a unique experience and Fiscardo at night takes on an entirely different perspective. The lights, the old buildings, cafés, bars and restaurants all combine to provide a magical Mediterranean atmosphere.  Of  all the villages on Kefalonia, Fiscardo stands out as having a unique ambience, especially on a summer evening.

Day 5:  Porto Katsiki When you think about sailing the Greek Islands, you think about cleat water, beautiful beaches and white cliffs.  This is it. We sail you to Porto Katsiki beach on Lefkada Island, which is one of the most beautiful Greek beaches.  It is also in the top of the list of best beaches in Europe each year. You will absolutely fall in love with the beach and won't want to leave, ever. We will stop for lunch and swim before heading to Sivota Bay. Greece sailing holidays are know for protected harbours, and Sivota is one of the nicest natural harbours and one of the most picturesque fishing village in whole Ionion.  After parking the boat, you’ll stroll the streets soaking up the special atmosphere of the magical bay.

Day 6:  Papa Nicholas Cave We'll sail the catamaran to Papa Nicholas Caves where it’s said that it was a secret hideout during World War II for the submarine Papanikolis of the Italian armada. After a swim and exploration, we’ll sail to a final stop for the trip. After sailing the Greek Islands on your private yacht for the week, we have one last trick up our sleeves for your afternoon delight, Ormos Vrako.

Whether you've had a cabin or private charter, we hope that your Greek Island sailing holiday was truly special.

Day 7:  Ormos Vrako/Lefkas

When we sail back to Lefkas, we’ll stop in the protected bay of Ormos Vrako on the mainland.  There is a lively beach bar, where you can enjoy the music, lap in the shallows of the water or grab your snorkel and explore the rocks and the surrounding bays.  Sometimes 'Sailing Greece' means laying on the beach with a cocktail.

Day 8:  Ormos Vrako/Lefkas What a superb way to end your week sailing the Greek islands, before heading back to the marina by 9am.

What to pack for a Greek Isles cruise

What to pack for a Greek Isles cruise

CRUISE TIPS: Greece is world-renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and rich history and cruising the region allows you to see it all easily. Knowing what to pack for a Greek Isles cruise is based mostly on what you plan to see and do on shore – but knowing the dress code of the cruise line and ship is important too.

Pack for a Greek Isles cruise suitcase ideas

Your choice of shore excursions is key for knowing what to pack for a Greek Isles cruise – whether it’s exploring ancient ruins like the Acropolis or Parthenon in Athens, or strolling along the beaches of Mykonos with its stunning turquoise waters.

For the most part, summertime in Greece presents gorgeous clear skies, lovely  breezes and warm temperatures, however the sun can be fierce at times. Use sunscreen of course, but also avoid sunburn with a hat, sunglasses and clothing that’s light, airy and covers your shoulders and back of your neck if you feel sunscreen is not enough.

When packing for a Greek Isles cruise also consider clothing that’s multi-functional. For example, pants that have zippers to easily convert to shorts are ideal to wear on and off the cruise ship, or in and out of churches or museums. Or choose a dress that can also double as a long swimsuit coverup.

Santorini Greece

When selecting clothes, pick items made of breathable fabrics such as cotton to keep you cool. Light colours are also a smart choice as they don’t absorb heat as well. And if you’re travelling with family or friends, wear bright light colours that are easy to spot in a crowd so you’re less likely to lose each other. You’ll stand out from a ‘sea’ of black and white T-shirts that most people wear.

Pack a swimsuit (or wear one under your clothes) and an extra T-shirt in your backpack or beach bag. If you get hot, you might have the opportunity to quickly change into swimwear and head to the beach, or change out of a sweaty shirt and into a fresh one. Bring along a small towel and plastic bag to store your wet items so they don’t damage anything in your bag such as camera equipment.

Greek isles cruise

Your choice of footwear is paramount to your comfort. In Greece, be prepared to walk on all types of surfaces from cobblestones, smooth slippery marble and uneven walkways at ancient sites, to sand or pebbles on the beach. Wear a comfortable pair of covered shoes to prevent stubbed toes, while also having a pair of lightweight sandals or flipflops in your backpack as a lighter option when appropriate.

On the cruise ship

Knowing what to pack for a Greek Isles cruise to wear when on the ship depends on the cruise line as some are more formal than others. Visit the cruise line’s website and search “Dress code” for guidance.

In general, most cruise ships have a wide variety of restaurants and bars so pack at least one outfit that fits every requirement so you can enjoy any of them.

Business casual is the most common dress code for most ship venues and for men this means longer dress shorts or pants and a collared shirt. For women, this includes dresses, skirts and blouses, dress shorts or capris – and carry a shawl for those chilly spaces such as dining rooms and theatres that are air-conditioned.

If you want to attend formal night activities or venues, men can wear suits or dress slacks with a sport coat, dress shirt and tie, or go all out with a tuxedo if it’s an upscale cruise line. For women, cocktail dresses, pant suits or elegant skirts and blouses are ideal.

Casual jeans, T-shirts, workout wear, sleeveless shirts (for men), flipflops and sneakers are best to wear around the pool, gym, recreational or sports venues such as basketball courts, mini-golf and shuffleboard, casual outdoor bars or out on deck.

And if there’s something you’ve forgotten, the cruise ship gift shop likely has something you can wear that’s suitable until you can go ashore and shop for exactly what you want.

Free Packing Checklists

For more information on what to pack for a cruise, here are FREE detailed cruise packing checklists – one for men and one for women – that you can download and print.

How to pack

For advice on how to pack, you’ll get more items in your suitcase by flat-packing rather than rolling items. Check out CN Traveler’s packing comparison . Flat packing allowed for an extra pair of pants and top over roll packing. However roll packing causes fewer wrinkles.

How To Spend One Day In Athens, Greece: The Perfect Itinerary For Cruise and Quick Visits

Discover the ultimate family guide to spending a quick and efficient one day in Athens, Greece. Explore top attractions, top attractions, and travel tips for a cruise port day or one-day visit.

Temple of Athena at the Acropolis on a One day Athens Itinerary

The city of Athens is one of the most awe-inspiring urban centers on the planet.

When my family had the chance to stroll down the narrow streets and climb up to the Athena Parthenon, we came face-to-face with a jaw-dropping amount of history. My family loved the city so much that we came back to Greece twice in just six months. A travel experience that we very rarely have a chance to do when we travel.

The first time that we came to Greece, we spent two days in Athens. On our second visit to a cruise port during our Greek Islands cruise , we only had one day in Athens to see as much as possible.

After both of those visits, I think we’ve perfected that brief but epic itinerary that will let your family experience the best things to do in the city on a short schedule.

Athens is, after all, one of the most awe-inspiring places to visit in Greece . At one time, this was one of the most influential cities in the world. It was the birthplace of philosophy, democracy, and many of the world’s best adventure stories .

Our first visit to Athens was on a dramatic road trip inspired by our boys’ love of the Percy Jackson and the Olympian’s modern fantasy series. The book series follows a young demi-god living in modern times as he navigates a balance of living as the son of a Greek God while still living life as a modern teenager. It’s a wild ride.

If you’re looking for a one-day Athens itinerary, this city guide is perfect to help you plan your visit. We covered most of the big experiences in the city and even had time for a few unexpected adventures that you’ll likely not find in many other places.

How you follow this itinerary is going to depend a lot upon your timeline. I’ve laid out some of the more time-sensitive items, such as the Acropolis and some of the restaurants. But I recommend following a path that hits the major sights for the rest of it based on where you’re staying so that you avoid too much walking, especially if you’re visiting Athens with younger children.

Breakfast At Migniardis

A boy smiles behind the counter in the arms of Thanos, the owner of Migniardise Cafe in Athens, Greece

If you’re arriving to Athens on a cruise ship, you may not have the chance for this, as you’ll likely be eating on the boat. But if you have a full day to spend in the city, this is where we would start.

We love keeping it as local as possible, so when we started our one day in Athens, we wanted to fuel up with a local hotspot. We had researched local Greek breakfast spots and cafes and came across Migniardise at Veikou 30, Athina 117.

This lovely little cafe is run by a man named Thanos (which my kids just couldn’t believe after watching some Marvel movies), who was an absolute gem, showing off his favorite Greek treats, amazing coffee, and traditional Greek dishes.

Migniardise is a classic Greek cafe, so there are no seats inside, but there are a couple of small tables outside where we enjoyed our breakfast.

The Acropolis

The Temple of Athena at the Athens Acropolis beneath a rainbow

Let’s face it. The Acropolis is the face of Athens. And any family visiting the city will definitely want to check this off of their Athens bucket list.

The Acropolis was the first place that my family visited in the city. We had originally booked tickets on Get Your Guide, but those tickets turned out to be fake (we don’t get burned often, but when we do, it hurts). So, we ended up getting our tickets directly from the ticket booths outside of the entrance.

You can also purchase tickets and a gu i ded tour from Viator at a very good price if you’d like to have an expert on hand to show you around.

We visited Athens in March, so the crowds weren’t nearly as busy as they can get during the peak summer months, but the Acropolis grounds were still buzzing with excited visitors.

I highly recommend that you visit first thing in the morning as the crowds get busier throughout the day, and so does the heat. There is very little shade around the Acropolis, so take advantage of the cooler mornings to enjoy yourself.

Before we went in, the boys posed with a gladiator outside of the entrance. We were celebrating Cohen’s birthday, and when the actor found out, he gave them each a cool Greek pendant.

Within the Acropolis, there are several different things to do. I recommend grabbing a map and planning out your visit beforehand so that you get to all the stops that resonate best with you. Most visitors walk up the stairs to get to the entrance, but there is an elevator for those with mobility issues or for parents with strollers.

Give yourself at least a couple of hours to go through the Acropolis grounds. Some of the top places to visit are the Propylaea (where most people enter), the Theatre of Dionysos, the Odeion of Herodes Atticus, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Parthenon itself.

The Theatre of Dionysos is often heralded as the world’s oldest theater. The views here, overlooking the surrounding area and Athens itself, are spectacular.

Hadrian’s Arch and the Statue of Zeus at Olympia

Hadrian's Arch frame the Acropolis

There’s something uniquely magical about ancient monuments. In our travels, we’ve been lucky enough not just to encounter many of the modern wonders of the world like Machu Picchu , Petra , and Chichen Itza , but we’ve also gotten glimpses of what remains of several of the Ancient Wonders of the World including the Temple of Artemis in Selcuk , Turkiye, the Great Pyramids of Giza , and on our one-day tour of Athens, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia.

Very little remains of the statue of Zeus beyond the throne on which the statue once stood and a few broken columns. But the Arch of Hadrian, which was built right between the ancient city of Athens and where Hadrian’s new city was being built, is still a majestic place to visit in Athens. The arch stands next to a busy roadway but offers a beautiful frame for the nearby Acropolis.

Panathenaic Stadium

Two boys celebrate on the podium of the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens Greece

After taking in the wonders of the Acropolis, we took a leisurely stroll down from the hilltop, pausing to grab some roasted chestnuts and some golden Olympic tiaras on the way. We continued down past the Acropolis Museum.

The museum is a wonderful stop, especially if you love museums. For us, our one-day Athens itinerary didn’t really allow for it. We wanted to have our feet in history, not just see it on display. So we continued downhill toward the Panathenaic Stadium.

It was March, and back home, the boys were preparing for their spring track and field meets, so a stop at the first modern Olympic Stadium seemed like a perfect way to set the mood. The stadium, originally built in 144 CE, is the only stadium in the world to be completely built out of marble. It was excavated and renovated to be used in the inaugural 1896 modern Olympic games. The stadium hosted four of the nine Olympic events from that year. It was used for the Olympics again in during the 2000 Summer Olympic Games.

After running around the track a few times, we dipped into one of the athlete tunnels on the north side of the museum. The tunnels lead to a cool little free museum where you can see a huge collection of Olympic torches from the past century.

Tripodon Street

A shade tree creates a scenic tunnel on Tripodon Street, the oldest street in Europe

The oldest surviving road in the world is Lake Moeris Quarry Road in Egypt , which has been in existence for more than 4,000 years. But the oldest road in Europe is right here in Athens. Tripodon Street runs through the Plaka from Thespidos Lisou and is essentially a section of Flessa Street.

At 18 feet wide, Tripodon was actually one of the widest streets in Europe at one point. Nowadays, it’s a narrow lane lined with wonderful restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Strolling down Tripodon isn’t just a cool walk down memory lane. It’s a convenient way to get to some of the best things to do in Athens, like the Plaka. I highly recommend stopping at one of the ice cream shops along the way and treating yourself to a cold treat, especially if you’re visiting Athens during the summer.

Lunch at Varvakios Central Municipal Market

Just past the end of Tripodon St. at the corner of Socratous 9 and Thatrou 2 was one of Athen’s hidden gems. Diporto restaurant was one of the oldest restaurants in Athens and had been serving set blue-collar meals across from the city’s Municipal market for decades. Unfortunately, Diporto closed its doors shortly after our last visit.

But if Diporto was on your Athens culinary list, don’t fret; the Municipal market has loads of amazing places to eat, many with the same rough-and-tumble vibe that Diportos so loved. You’ll find kebabs, grilled sardines, salads, and authentic Greek cuisine as fresh as it could possibly be.

Enjoy some time wandering through the aisles, picking out your seafood or meats and vegetables, and watching as it’s crafted into an unforgettable meal.

Hadrian’s Library

The walls of Hadrian's Library in Athens, Greece with tall columns connected by bricks

Just a ten-minute walk from the Varvakios Central Municipal Market is Hadrian’s Library. Built in 132 CE, the library was used for art exhibitions, as well as a place of worship. But its primary function was as an archive for many of the city’s important documents.

Hadrian’s Library suffered heavy damage during an earthquake in 237 CE but was repaired in 402 by Herculius the Perfect of Illiricum. This is a beautiful historic spot, and a visit here doesn’t take much more than about 20-30 minutes.

The Ancient Agora

Crowds walk past a row of columns in the Ancient Agora in the Athens Plaka

Circling back around the top of the Plaka, we enjoyed a shady 10-minute walk to the Ancient Agora. The Agora is a BIG stop, almost as involved as a visit to the Acropolis itself, and if you find yourself walking in, try to limit your visit to one hour in length so you’ll have time to see the rest of the city.

Some of the most notable stops in the Agora are the Temple of Hephaestus, the Stoa of Attalos, and the Odeon of Agrippa. There’s also an on-site museum called the Agora Museum located in the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos. There are some fascinating exhibits and many pieces of art from the original buildings.

You can get a guided tour of the Ancient Agora if you’d like, but if you want to save some money and still learn, there’s a fantastic  free audio gui de from Rick Steves’ Europe that we used. It has loads of great information and helped to keep us on track while we were exploring.

Sunset and Dinner at Mount Lycabettus

Athens can sport some beautiful sunsets, and one of the things that I’d love to do on a one-day Athens itinerary is to get to the top of Mount Lycabettus, the highest point in the city, and watch the sunset.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to do this on our second day, as our Greek Islands cruise was leaving early. But if you get the chance, the photos that I’ve seen are beautiful. You can actually see Mount Lycabettus from the Acropolis, so it’s easy to scout out the location to decide if the weather will cooperate for you.

There’s a funicular railway that can take visitors up from the lower terminus at Kolonaki (on Aristippou Street). At the summit is the 19th-century Chapel of St. George, a theater, and a restaurant.

The restaurant, Orizontes , is beautiful and offers incredible views of the city, especially on a clear night. The servings are generous and tasty, but expect to pay tourist-level prices here. But the scenery is worth it.

Bonus Things To See With One Day In Athens For Those Fast Travelers

I recognize that not everyone travels slowly, so if you’re the type of traveler who can rip through a destination at lightning speed, here are a few bonus stops to enjoy on your Athens day trip.

Monastiraki Market

Crowds shopping at the Monastiraki Market in central Athens

Markets are my favorite way to get into the heart of a new city, and one look at the bustling entrance to Monastiraki Market on Ifestou Street will let you know that you’ve arrived where the action is.

Although Monastiraki is dubbed as a Flea Market, it really only fits that bill on Sundays. Monday through Saturday, the market is a bustling hub of stores selling everything from trinkets to antiques, much more akin to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul . But on Sundays, locals lay out rugs and hock wares, bringing a new level to the busy market experience.

You’ll find great deals on clothing and souvenirs such as handmade sandals (Christina picked up a lovely pair that she still uses all of the time), clothing, artwork, and baked goods. Most of the items are priced to bargain, so bring your poker face. The bargaining here is all in good spirits, and if you get a great deal, you may even be congratulated!

There are countless cafes and small restaurants throughout Monastiraki Market. One of my top food stops in Monastiraki is Bairaktaris. This famous souvlaki spot has been run by the same family since 1879!

Church of Panagia Kapnikarea

Historic stone Church of Panagia Kapnikarea in Athens

Stroll around historical Athens, and you’ll notice some gorgeous small stone churches that dot the urban landscape. These are some of the oldest and most beautiful places of worship in the country. The most famous of these is the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea at Pl. Kapnikareas 3.

The history of the church is spotty, but it’s believed that it was built sometime in the 11th century, possibly around 1050 CE, over a Greek temple that was dedicated to either Athena or Demeter.

Inside, the small but opulent church is dark and broody, but the artwork and design are quite spectacular. There are no photos allowed inside the church, but it’s definitely worth a visit. To add to the allure, there are some wonderful cafes and ice cream shops nearby.

Have An Extra Day? Here’s How We Would Spend A Second Day In Athens

Sunset over a cliffside Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, Greece

If you have a second day in Athens, you may want to check out our two-day Athens itinerary . It runs at a slightly more relaxed pace but lets you see some of the city’s top attractions.

But if you’d like to expand your reach around Athens, it’s road trip time. I recommend either renting a car or joining a tour to visit Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. This beautiful cliffside temple was a key reason that we chose to visit Greece, as Poseidon is the main God in the Percy Jackson book series!

Sounion is about an hour from central Athens, and if you have the chance to get there for a sunrise view of the temple, you won’t regret it.

The scenic drive around Cape Sounion is wonderful, and if you love snorkeling, it has some of the clearest water in Greece. This private half-day tour takes you out to Cape Sounio for that beautiful sunset and includes dinner and drinks.

Family-Friendly Places To Stay In Athens

If you’ve only got one days in Athens, picking the right places to stay can be the difference between experiencing and commuting.

We chose to splurge and stay close to the historic old town. Yes, the prices are higher, and the rooms are smaller, but because we only had a limited amount of time, we wanted to ensure that we had as much time to explore as possible.

We stayed at Old Time Apartments , which is just a short walk to the Acropolis. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and they had more than enough space for the four of us and Christina’s parents, who had joined us for our mainland tour of Greece.

If Old Time Apartments is booked, nearby Apartments Tina is another highly-rated place to stay with a similar setup. They also offer a free Airport shuttle, which we didn’t need because we were driving in Greece.

Tips For Visiting Athens With Kids

Like any big city, there are a few things to know about Athens before you visit. These Athens tips should help you plan for your visit and save you a little money and time when you’re in the city.

  • You can save money using the Acropolis and Six Archaeological Site combo ticket . It includes access to the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Temple of Zeus, Aristotle’s School, Hadrian’s Library, and Kerameikos Ancient Cemetery. The ticket also includes five audio guides so you can learn about the attractions along the way.
  • Before you go, check out our  Greece family travel guide , which has loads of tips, including Greek words to know, electrical outlet types, and other important need-to-knows before you go.
  • Plan for Heat and Hydration, especially during the summer. Athens can get very hot, and many of the archaeological sites do not have much shade. Carry a filtered water bottle , wear hats, and apply sunscreen regularly. Plan outdoor activities like visiting the Acropolis early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the peak heat.
  • Athens has a reliable and affordable public transportation system, including buses, trams, and the metro. The metro is particularly useful for getting around quickly and avoiding traffic. Consider getting an “Athens Transport Ticket” or a family pass for easy access to all public transport.

How to Get to Athens?

If you’re visiting Athens from out of town, it’s a very easy city to get to. There is reliable public transportation that includes buses, trams, and a metro. We used public transit to get from the cruise port to the old town, which took us about an hour.

There are ticket booths near most stops, and many shops and groceries also sell public transportation tickets. Most transit options will take you right to Syntagma Square near the Parliament buildings.

Athens Airport is located about 30 minutes from central Athens. Taxis and shuttles are available to take you straight to the urban center. We rented a van at the airport and drove ourselves. It was an easy drive for the most part, but expect very narrow streets and limited parking once you get to the older section of the city.

  • My family's cruise cost less than $1,700 for a week visiting several islands in Greece and Turkey.
  • Because our trip was in October, it was much cheaper than a trip during peak travel season.
  • We booked over a year early — if prices drop, you can typically change your booking for the lower price.

Because my two kids (ages 12 and 14) attend a school that uses a modified, year-round schedule, they get two weeks off for fall break in October of each year.

Since fall is a great time to travel to the Caribbean or Europe due to pleasant weather and off-peak rates, we typically plan a trip for the entire break to new destinations around the world.

This year's fall break was no different, as my husband and I took our girls to Athens, Greece for several days before embarking on a seven-night Greek Islands cruise on the MSC Musica. The total cost for an interior cabin came out to just under $1,632 including the cruise fare, a "free drinks and WiFi" package and port taxes and fees.

We scored an incredible deal for a cruise that left Athens and visited the islands of Mykonos; Rhodes and Santorini in Greece; the island of Cyprus; and Kuşadası, Turkey, which is known for its proximity to the ancient ruins of Ephesus.

My family loves cruising because it's affordable and fun, and because we get to visit new destinations all the time. Saving money on each cruise we book also frees up cash in our travel budget to take more trips in the future.

Cruising is a fairly affordable way to travel as a family to begin with, but it can be an even better deal with some planning, especially if you avoid the most common cruise spending traps .

Cruise travel insurance is a good way to make sure you get the most out of the money you spend. It also helps to use points from a travel rewards credit card to help cover part of the cost. I take four steps to get the best value.

1. Travel on off peak dates

While cruising Europe can definitely be expensive, the highest cruise fares are definitely found during the summer months of June through August. We cruised out of Athens in the middle of October this year, which was the absolute end of the cruise season for destinations like Mykonos and Santorini. In fact, you'll find a lot fewer Greek islands cruises taking place in November or December, or any time after that until the next spring.

Just like other types of travel, cruising off-peak comes with lighter crowds and lower costs. We paid a lot less for our cruise cabin by traveling in October, and we also got excellent weather since the temperature was in the high 70s each day of the trip.

2. Pay for an interior cabin

Some newer cruise ships have all kinds of cabins and suites to choose from, but the MSC Musica is an older cruise ship that has standard interior cabins, sea view cabins, balcony cabins and basic suite options. Either way, interior cabins are always the least expensive, and they are often roomier and nicer than you might think.

Our cruise ship was around half empty. This led to MSC Cruises upgrading the cabin to a balcony cabin even though we paid for an interior room.

This is never guaranteed to happen and it probably won't in the future if we banked on it, but I still saved big by opting for the least expensive room on the ship when I booked.

3. Compare cruise lines and itineraries

Make sure to compare cruise lines and itineraries before you book a cruise. After all, cruise fares can vary by season, based on specific dates, and around whatever sales are going on at the time. While you can shop around for cruises and compare prices on each line's website, the website Vacations To Go is a great place to compare multiple itineraries, ships and cruise lines all in one place.

We found that MSC Cruises had the best price in October for the trip we wanted to take, and we also saved 5% for being part of the MSC Voyagers Club cruise loyalty program.

4. Book early

Finally, booking early is always the best way to save money on a cruise. Booking ahead means you can lock in the cabin you want with a deposit, and you can typically call the cruise line to change your booking if the price goes down until a few months before departure.

Cruise lines also offer their best incentives to get people to book cruises a year out or even sooner. Because we booked our fall break cruise almost a year ahead of time, we each got a $50 on-board credit to spend and a free drinks and WiFi package included.

  • Live reporting by Niamh Lynch

We're ending our live coverage for this evening but here is a recap of what we know:

  • Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation into the Bayesian sinking;
  • Officials have revealed more details on their investigation and the difficult five-day rescue mission;
  • The six bodies found during the search in recent days were all in cabins on the left-hand - and highest - side of the ship. Five were found in the first cabin and the sixth was found in the third;
  • Prosecutors said the six passengers were most likely asleep when the boat sank;
  • The probe is now focusing on the crew and their responsibilities, with the captain set to undergo more questioning.

Monday 19 August

The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.

Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing.

One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck.

It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing.

Tuesday 20 August

The search continues for the six tourists missing.

It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.

The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."

Wednesday 21 August

The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.

A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.

Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.

Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.

Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm.

Thursday 22 August

The search resumes for the remaining missing person.

The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore.

A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday.

Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died.

The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.

Friday 23  August

The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".

The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found.

A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.

A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah.

Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel".

Saturday 24 August

A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese.

Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived.

A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking.

Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche".

"He was riveting.  He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said.

Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen".

"In particular, he was wonderful with children.  I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said.

She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative".

Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led".

"I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain.  Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said.

"He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him."

A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars".

Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah.

"Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said.

"Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."

Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released:

Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation.

Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors?

Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?

The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.

Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.

He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry.

Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?

The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.

The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.

Why did the boat sink?

The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.

He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.

Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?

Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.

Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.

Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.

What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?

Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.

He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado.

"Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said.

"There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions."

How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?

Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.

"Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said.

"I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks."

He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.

Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post).

But why was the five-day search so difficult?

More on this morning's press conference.

One of the main updates from prosecutors was that they have opened manslaughter and shipwreck investigations after the deaths of seven people in the Bayesian sinking.

Watch the announcement below...

Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.

Read the full report on the prosecutors' probe below...

Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference.

"Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work.

"Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht.

"So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen?

"Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life."

Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck.

Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself."

"It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth.

"If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer.

"But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at."

Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping.

"It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge.

"But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said.

Tornado likely sank luxury yacht off coast of Sicily, officials say, as search for survivors continues

Updated on: August 20, 2024 / 7:56 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Police divers resumed searching Tuesday for six people believed trapped in the hull of a superyacht that sank in deep seas off Sicily, including a British tech magnate who was celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who had defended him at trial.

Civil protection officials said they believed the Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, had been struck by a tornado over the water. The ship had been moored about a half-mile offshore off Porticello near Palermo when a storm rolled and the vessel sank at about 5 a.m. local time on Monday .

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the majestic, illuminated 246-foot mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappearing over the course of a minute.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body was recovered, identified by officials as the Antiguan-born on-board chef. The rest of the 10-person crew survived, including the captain whom prosecutors reportedly sought to interview.

Italy Boaters Missing

However, CBS News senior weather producer David Parkinson said Tuesday that it's still too early to determine whether the yacht was hit by a waterspout or a downburst. A waterspout is a meteorological term for a tornado over water, while a downburst consists of powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and can often be misinterpreted as a tornado, according to the National Weather Service.

As of now, Parkinson said, it's only safe to say that the yacht was impacted by a severe thunderstorm. Based on satellite imagery, there were strong to violent thunderstorms in the area where the yacht sank, Parkinson said.

That said, early Monday morning conditions were appropriate for either the development of a waterspout or a downburst, Parkinson explained. At around 4 a.m. local time Monday, the winds spiked, with wind gusts above 43 mph in Palermo. About 10 minutes later in the town of Aspra — which is 20 miles from Palermo and three to four miles west of where the boat sank — wind gusts of 51 mph were recorded, and the thunderstorms appeared to intensify as they moved east.

In cases of downbursts, when wind hits the water's surface, it increases the wind speed, Parkinson said. While at the time the boat sank, water temperatures were 84 degrees Fahrenheit, which would be warm enough to support the development of a waterspout, Parkinson said.

"It's a great, great tragedy," said Britain's ambassador to Italy, Edward Llewellyn, who visited Porticello on Tuesday. Britain sent four investigators to the scene, given the disaster involved a British-flagged ship and British citizens were among the missing.

Fire rescue officials have said the six other passengers will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage. They include tycoon Mike Lynch , who was once hailed as Britain's king of technology and was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard's $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

Also unaccounted for are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch's lawyers, and Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International and the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified in Lynch's defense.

The wreckage of the luxury craft is some 164 feet underwater — far deeper than most recreational divers are certified for and a depth that requires special precautions. Recovery crews could only stay for 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed their efforts to reach the cramped inside of the wreck.

Italy Boaters Missing

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the 15 survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, said he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

"A moment later, she was gone," he said. "They said they went flat on the water and were sunk in two minutes," Borner added, quoting the survivors.

The rotating search teams, each made up of two specialized cave divers, worked Tuesday to open up access points to get inside the wreck. They were using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, or ROV, to help in the search.

The divers hadn't been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that had shifted during the violent storm. Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping, but the teams haven't verified their presence there through portholes.

Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, said the search was proceeding much more slowly than another big shipwreck in Italy, the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship that flipped on its side off Tuscany's coast, because of the depth of the wreck and the limited space divers have to maneuver.

"That was much simpler. Here everything is more tight," he said.

The outing was intended at least in part as a celebration of Lynch's acquittal and a "looking forward to what was coming next," said Reid Weingarten, a Washington attorney and a member of Lynch's defense team who was not on the yacht.

"A lot of people went, a lot of people were planning to go and then of course this happened," Weingarten said.

Some of the people who stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal were on board, including Morvillo, the lawyer, who Weingarten worked with and said "was like a brother."

Morvillo's wife, Neda, is also missing, according to his law firm Clifford Chance.

Aki Hussain, CEO of international insurer Hiscox Group, where Bloomer, the witness, was chairman, said the company was "deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event."

"Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation," he added.

Among the survivors, the Emslie family was released from Palermo's pediatric hospital on Tuesday where little Sofia had been kept overnight after her rescue. Her mother, Charlotte Golunski, had reported that she momentarily lost hold of the 1-year-old in the water but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, doctors said.

Hewlett Packard Rotten Deal Trial

The father, identified by ANSA news agency as James Emslie, also survived.

"They don't talk much, primarily because they consider themselves survivors and they don't understand why they survived given what they went through," said Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at Di Cristina Pediatric Hospital.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Cipolla said Golunski had reported that she and the baby were sleeping in the cabin and suddenly found themselves in the water, where they also found Emslie who had been in a different part of the ship. Cipolla said the parents had been in touch with other survivors, who are being housed at a nearby hotel and were waiting for other family members to arrive in Sicily.

The baby slept well overnight and all were released after final checks Tuesday morning, he said according to a videotaped interview posted on Palermo Today, adding that psychologists had been made available.

Among the other survivors was Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares. Hannah Lynch, reportedly the couple's 18-year-old daughter, is among the missing.

The yacht's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., according to online maritime database Equasis. Bacares is listed as Revtom's sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

Italy Boaters Missing

Its name, Bayesian, may be a reference to "Bayesian Inference," one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Lynch's company.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew. According to online charter companies, it had been available for charter for about $215,000 a week and was notable for its massive aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

The coast guard said to date there was no trace of fuel leaks from the wreckage.

In an unrelated event, Lynch's co-defendant in the Autonomy trial who was also cleared, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed Sunday when he was hit by a car while running in Cambridgeshire, England, said Chamberlain's lawyer, Gary Lincenberg.
