Skoda Octavia Scout review: cut-price A4 Allroad tested

octavia tour scout

SPEC HIGHLIGHTS

What’s a Scout?

It’s an off-roady version of the Skoda Octavia Estate. Think Audi A4/A6 Allroad, Passat/Golf Alltrack or Mercedes E-Class AllTerrain. 30mm of extra ride height, underbody protection, a dedicated off-road mode with hill-descent control, standard all-wheel drive and some black plastic body mouldings are what separate it from the standard car.

So, is it any good off-road?

Actually, yes. That Skoda even quote a departure angle (14.5 degrees) shows it’s taking this seriously. We drove the Scout around an off-road course that would’ve unstuck the average crossover, and it had no trouble whatsoever with any of the obstacles. It didn’t scrabble for traction, even though the all-wheel drive system is a Haldex job with a multi-plate clutch ahead of the rear-axle, so It’s basically front-driven until it decides it needs the extra grip. For most, this is all the off-roader you’d ever need.

…and on-road?

Not bad at all. Comfy, thanks to sensible alloys and that extra little bit of suspension travel. Could be just the thing for Britain’s uniquely terrible roads. There is a Sport mode, but that’s a button you should leave well alone. The Scout can do corners, but this is a car best left in its softest mode and just stroked along. There's roll but it doesn’t pitch or wallow too much and the steering’s pretty good, albeit lacking in tactility (isn't everything?). The high-power diesel is exactly as quick as a diesel vRS – 7.8secs to 62mph – but that’s of no consequence. DSG seems less keen to kickdown, more willing to use the torque on offer, thus making it a pretty relaxing thing.

Engines. Tell us about them

There are two, both diesels, both 2.0-litres. One has 148bhp, 251lb ft and a six-speed manual gearbox. The other is the 181bhp/280lb ft from the Octavia vRS and Golf GTD. That one you can only have with a six-speed DSG. Known quantites, both of them. A fine engine - fast and refined enough for a so-sized diesel. Petrol engines and different gearbox combos are available elsewhere in Europe.

Should I buy one?

Pricing isn’t too far off the vRS - starts at £25,880 and rises to £28,675. Seeing as you’re the type of person who reads car reviews on TopGear.com, that’s probably the Octavia for you. But if you need a degree of off-road ability, but don't want the high-rise silhouette of an SUV, you could do worse.

Skoda Octavia Scout ( 2021 )

Skoda octavia scout.

Škoda completes the introduction of its bestseller's fourth generation with the launch of the Octavia RS and the estate with off-road styling, the Octavia Scout. The new range-topping Octavias boast even higher levels of safety, new assistance systems, more comfort and modern connectivity features. Never before has Škoda offered as many powertrain variants as in the latest-generation models.

The RS and Scout models have been at the top of the Octavia family for several generations. The Škoda Octavia RS iV - the brand's first-ever RS model to feature plug-in hybrid drive - is now followed by variants equipped with either the most powerful diesel or petrol engine of the entire model range. This means that, for the first time, the Octavia RS is available with a choice of three powertrains. The 2.0 TDI from the new EVO generation now produces 147 kW (200 PS) and comes with either front- or all-wheel drive. The new EVO variant of the 2.0 TSI has an output of 180 kW (245 PS), which powers the front wheels. For the new Škoda Octavia Scout, there is a choice of five diesel or petrol engines, and a 1.5 TSI featuring mild hybrid technology. For the first time, the estate with rugged body applications and off-road styling is no longer only available with all-wheel drive but now with front-wheel drive too.

Both the Octavia RS and Octavia Scout also benefit from all the upgrades the current generation has been provided with, such as an even bigger interior, more comfort, the highest levels of active and passive safety, and modern connectivity features. Apart from the Škoda Octavia Scout, all variants are available as a hatchback or a COMBI, and the powertrain portfolio for the model is now bigger than ever. In addition to efficient diesel and petrol engines and the Octavia G-TEC, which is designed to run on eco-friendly compressed natural gas (CNG), the line-up also includes electrified powertrains for the first time. The Octavia iV plug-in hybrid generates a system output of 150 kW (204 PS), while the Octavia RS iV delivers 180 kW (245 PS). The Octavia e-TEC is the first Škoda model to feature mild hybrid technology and makes use of a 48V belt-driven starter motor and a 48V lithium-ion battery. The engines available for this model produce 81 kW (110 PS) and 110 kW (150 PS) respectively.

Škoda Octavia Scout: Powertrain and chassis

To date, the Octavia Scout has only ever been available as an all-wheel-drive estate. This new generation of the successful model with off road styling can now also be ordered as a front-wheel-drive variant. An engine featuring mild hybrid technology is another first for the Scout, and the most powerful 2.0 TDI now delivers 147 kW (200 PS).

When fitted with a 2.0 TDI engine delivering 147 kW (200 PS), the Škoda Octavia Scout can tow a braked trailer weighing up to 2,000 kg. The all-wheel-drive model has a fuel capacity of 55 l, which is 10 l more than the standard Škoda Octavia variant can hold.

New, sixth-generation multi-plate clutch

The Octavia Scout's all-wheel-drive system makes use of a new electronically controlled multi plate clutch. This clutch, now in its sixth generation, is nearly 0.8 kg lighter than its predecessor and it is not only more efficient but also consumes less fuel, thanks to the use of low friction oil, reduced bearing preload and refined internal lubrication. For improved responsiveness, the control unit has been integrated, making an external processing unit redundant. The software assesses the customer's driving style to determine whether all-wheel drive is required, completely shutting off the electric motor that drives the oil pump if necessary. If all wheel drive is required, the system is re-engaged within fractions of a second.

Rough-Road package with increased ground clearance and special off-road function

The Škoda Octavia Scout comes with a Rough-Road package, including underbody protection at the front and rear as standard. Featuring 15 mm additional ground clearance (163 mm overall), the Škoda Octavia Scout is equipped for off-road driving, making it the perfect vehicle to meet a variety of requirements. Apart from the 2.0 TDI producing 85 kW, adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) is an optional extra for vehicles with a 2.0-litre engine. Without DCC, the driver can set the characteristics of the XDS+ system to Normal or Sport using Driving Mode Select. XDS+ is an extension of the electronic differential lock (EDL) and improves traction.

The Scout is the only model in the Octavia range to include an optional off-road function, which can also be activated via the central display in Driving Mode Select. This function adapts the settings of the driving stability systems to the driving conditions on dirt tracks and gravel. The accelerator is less sensitive and the DSG only changes gear at higher engine speeds. The package also includes Hill-Descent Assist. The multi-link rear axle fitted in the all-wheel-drive Octavia Scout distinguishes itself by providing high levels of comfort and good handling.

Škoda Octavia Scout: Innovative technologies

The Škoda Octavia Scout boasts a wealth of new technologies and all of the assistance systems the fourth-generation Octavia has to offer. Shift-by-wire technology to operate the car's DSG and a head-up display are the latest features for the model, as are new systems for increasing safety further, such as Collision Avoidance Assist and Turn Assist.

An optional head-up display is making its Octavia Scout debut. This projects the most important information - such as speed, navigation advice, traffic signs and activated driver assistance systems - onto the windscreen, which can be heated as an option.

Innovative technologies from the fourth-generation Octavia

The new Octavia Scout can be ordered with numerous innovations that Škoda introduced with the launch of this fourth-generation range. The bestseller - fitted with DSG - is the brand's first car to use shift-by-wire technology. The driver selects gears via a small rocker switch located in the centre console, which transmits the commands electronically. New assistance systems, such as Collision Avoidance Assist, Turn Assist and Exit Warning (available from spring 2021), as well as the Local Traffic Warning mean that journeys in the Octavia Scout are even safer. What's more, the model is now on the market with full LED Matrix headlights, allowing the driver to leave the high beam on at all times. And it can be ordered with full LED tail lights, which feature not only dynamic indicators but also an animated Coming/Leaving Home function.

New and improved assistance systems in the Octavia Scout

Other new and improved assistance systems from the fourth-generation Octavia are also available for the Škoda Octavia Scout. Side Assist warns the driver of vehicles approaching from behind or when they are in the blind spot, up to a distance of 70 m. It also helps to prevent accidents on motorways and dual carriageways. In urban environments, Front Assist - including Predictive Pedestrian and Cyclist Protection - warns of collisions visually, acoustically and by gently applying the brakes, slowing the car down when necessary. It detects moving and stationary vehicles in the direction of traffic, and also cyclists and people who are moving in front of the car.

Škoda Octavia Scout: Rugged design

Thanks to its silver-coloured underbody protection and design details, the Škoda Octavia Scout can be identified as the rugged variant of the model range from the outside. LED fog lights and 18-inch alloys come as standard, as do silver-coloured roof rails and silver-finish wing mirror housings.

Specific front and rear bumpers featuring aluminium-effect underbody protection allow the Škoda Octavia Scout to be identified at first glance. The model also sports protective, black plastic trims for the wheel arches, side sills and lower part of the doors. The front and rear diffusers, roof rails and window frames come in a silver finish, as do the housings of the electrically adjustable, folding and heated wing mirrors with automatic dimming function. The Octavia Scout is equipped with LED fog lights as standard and sports exclusive Scout badges on its front wings. There is a choice of 11 paint finishes.

18- and 19-inch alloy wheels

The Škoda Octavia Scout's distinct appearance is accentuated by 18-inch silver-coloured Braga alloy wheels, which come as standard. They can also be ordered in anthracite; 19-inch Manaslu alloys are another option.

Improved drag coefficient

The more dynamic lines of the new-generation Octavia reduce drag. Its drag coefficient (cd) of 0.29 makes the Škoda Scout one of the most aerodynamic cars in its segment.

Long-term test review: Skoda Octavia Scout

Final report: we've loved driving 4wd estate, but it's time to say goodbye.

Skoda Octavia Scout long-termer - Otis final report header

4.0 out of 5

carwow logo

If you're put off by the idea of an SUV, then the Octavia Scout is an excellent alternative. It has bags of room for passengers and luggage, running costs are reasonable, and it's a comfortable car to drive over long distances. We'll miss the Scout, because it really is a great all-rounder.

Mileage:  22,856 Fuel economy:  49.3mpg

As I’m approaching the ripe old age of 30, I’ve found recently that my taste in cars has changed. Whereas before I was attracted by flared wheelarches wrapped around big wheels, and spoilers so large that you could comfortably seat a family of five around them for dinner, they now seem to be less appealing.

•  Best estate cars

Instead, it’s the smaller, simpler functions and facets of a car that jump out at me, and it’s these minor differences that can make or break the relationship I have with whichever model I happen to be running. My latest ride is our Skoda Octavia Scout , and having swapped from the virtually identical SEAT Leon X-Perience estate, it’s no surprise that it’s the little things that mark these two models out.

Skoda Octavia Scout long-termer - Otis driving

Last spring, we put the X-Perience and Scout head-to-head in a twin test, where the SEAT came out on top. But after living with both for a longer period, I’ve found the Skoda is more in tune with my needs.

While the Scout is marginally more expensive but with slightly less kit, its comfort and big boot give it an advantage in my book. Unlike the SEAT, I can load all of my camera gear under the Skoda’s load cover without it touching it. Our car’s optional £75 double-sided rubber boot mat also means stuff doesn’t slide around, and it’s easy to keep the load area clean, too.

Skoda Octavia Scout long-termer - Otis final report header

That comfort is really apparent when the Scout is cruising on the motorway. I travel across the country on a daily basis, and the Scout’s smaller wheels compared with the SEAT’s really do take the edge off bumps. Colleagues have found that the Scout is a perfect high-speed cruiser, too, and there’s not much of the motorway network the Skoda hasn’t covered on its journeys around the UK.

•  Best crossovers on the market

As it continued to rack up the miles, the dashboard flashed up a service warning indicator, so we had it booked into dealer Prestons Garages, Chelmsford, Essex to get it checked over. As well as a clean bill of health, the final bill of £133 proved equally satisfying thanks to its great value.

Skoda Octavia Scout long-termer - side

Since then, the Scout has racked up even more miles as its time with Auto Express has drawn to a close. While the lack of snow this winter has ensured we haven’t needed to test the limits of its four-wheel-drive ability, the odd icy morning and lots of wet roads mean we’ve appreciated the added security the system offers.

In some ways, this Scout estate is the perfect flagship for the Octavia range. Its rugged looks and extra equipment mean that it offers something different to the low-profile tyres and bodykit offered by the hot vRS version, and for me, that arguably makes it all the more appealing.

First report

Mileage: 11,314 Fuel economy: 44.6mpg

I’ve always been a bit sceptical about crossover versions of regular cars. Whether it’s upmarket models like the Audi A6 Allroad , or budget versions, such as the Dacia Sandero Stepway , they seem to me like they’re trying too hard, and the most off-roading they’ll ever do is tackling a high kerb or a grassy field.

What’s more, the plastic body cladding, raised ride height and four-wheel drive, where it’s offered, mean they command a premium over the standard models they’re based on, and usually have higher running costs, too.

Well, now it’s time to find out if there’s more to these cars than meets the eye, as I’ve taken charge of the Skoda Octavia Scout that has joined our fleet .

• Best family cars

As it’s based on one of our favourite estates, the Scout is off to a good start, and the black plastic wheelarch trim and silver skid plates, roof rails and wing mirrors nicely complement the Octavia’s straight-edged design.

Skoda Octavia Scout - interior driving

In some ways, I think the Scout makes more sense as the flagship of the Octavia range than the hot vRS model – it’s grown-up and refined compared to the wild child turbo model.

And as it turns out, the 33mm raised ride height of the Scout is probably a more effective addition to the Octavia than the lowered sports suspension you get on the vRS. The extra height means there’s room for longer-travel suspension at each corner, and that ensures the Scout has a pretty comfortable ride, especially in town.

Skoda Octavia Scout - boot

Speed bumps and potholes are dealt with easily, yet the Scout still handles as an Octavia should, with light, direct steering and sharp responses, albeit with a bit of extra body roll. However, this is more controlled than with most SUVs, which is a definite bonus of the crossover estate.

And the Scout’s talents don’t end there, as its motorway manners are first-class, too. The suspension soaks up all but the harshest bumps, while the plush cabin and quiet diesel engine help it to be a great cruiser.

Skoda Octavia Scout long-termer - boot space

One minor niggle is that adaptive cruise control is a £765 option – it’s standard on the top-spec Laurin & Klement version of the Octavia Estate , and it’s one luxury that I think would make the Scout even better.

• Best off-roaders

That’s about the only issue I have with the Scout’s kit list, and is more than made up for by the standard Amundsen sat-nav. It’s really simple to enter new destinations, and the mapping is clear. It also incorporates Bluetooth, DAB radio and an iPod connection, so I have plenty of options when it comes to listening to music on the excellent stereo.

Skoda Octavia Scout - boot

Another standard feature is the vast 610-litre boot (although our car’s optional space saver reduces capacity by 20 litres), and the one in the Scout has taken everything I’ve thrown at it so far.

Our car also features a handy double-sided floor (a £75 option) which means there’s a wipe-clean surface that can handle dirty loads. And while the brown leather and Alcantara interior trim doesn’t really appeal to me, it’s proved to be hard-wearing and easy to clean.

Skoda Octavia Scout - front action

So far, the Octavia Scout is convincing me that this type of model really works. Fuel economy of 45mpg is respectable, albeit 10mpg short of Skoda’s claimed figure, and it’s a price I’m happy to pay for a comfortable and urban-friendly family car.

Introduction, what car says....

What do the Sony PlayStation and Apple iPhone have in common with the Skoda Octavia ? Well, these high achievers are their respective brands' best-selling products.

Indeed, the Octavia is a pivotal model for Skoda. Since it first appeared as a family hatchback, it's been appealing to anybody with a keen eye on practicality and value. Its underpinnings continue to be shared with the VW Golf  but Skoda has increased the distance between the front and rear axles to add more passenger space.

Over the years, the Octavia has pushed steadily upmarket and it’s now so well regarded that it counts premium family cars including the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class among its rivals. It also competes with more mainstream models such as the Ford Focus , Seat Leon, Toyota Corolla  and  Vauxhall Astra . You might be tempted by the larger Skoda Superb  too, because it's not much more expensive.

To maintain its upwardly mobile trajectory, the latest Octavia has an advanced suite of driver tech, as well a plusher interior and a sharper look than ever before. A mid-life update included revised styling and upgraded tech to keep it fresh among newer rivals.

What Car? Buying a car frequently asked questions

What Car? has a buying service

So, how does the latest Skoda Octavia stack up against the best family cars ? Read on to find out...

"The Skoda Octavia has long been a favourite here at What Car?. Sure, it’s never been the most thrilling car to look at or even to drive, but with so much space inside its classy interior and a broad range of engines to choose from, it’s always been incredibly compelling." – Steve Huntingford, Editor

Performance & drive

What it’s like to drive, and how quiet it is, engine, 0-60mph and gearbox.

The Skoda Octavia's 148bhp diesel engine (badged 2.0 TDI 150PS) is an impressive performer, with a 0-62mph time of just 8.5 seconds. It pulls strongly from low revs, making it a great fit when you're travelling with a full car.

We wouldn’t rule out the cheaper TDI 116 diesel, though. It's less urgent (0-62mph takes 10.0 seconds) but there’s still plenty of low-down shove to keep up with traffic. It’s only available with a six-speed manual gearbox while the more powerful engine comes with a seven-speed automatic.

As good as the 148bhp diesel is, our favourite engine is the 1.5-litre TSI 150 petrol, which is similarly quick. True, you need to work it a bit harder, but it’s keen to do so and its standard six-speed manual gearbox is light and precise. You can also have a seven-speed  dual-clutch auto gearbox  which is paired with  mild-hybrid tech . The auto box shifts down a gear eagerly when you need a burst of acceleration. Both versions sprint from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds.

Skoda Octavia image

Below the TSI 150, there's an entry-level 1.5-litre petrol engine with 114bhp and the same gearbox options. It’s slower to rev and doesn’t feel as sprightly when accelerating up to motorway speeds, but it’s powerful enough for town driving.

Those wanting more punch might want to wait for the updated version of the Octavia vRS hot hatch version, with its 2.0-litre petrol gaining a small power increase to produce 261bhp. At the time of writing, Skoda had not confirmed whether the Octavia's plug-in hybrid ( PHEV ) engine option would return.

Suspension and ride comfort

The Octavia’s natural habitat is the motorway: it can waft along on its softly sprung suspension for mile after mile. The consequence of the soft setup is that it feels a little floaty over crests when you turn off the motorway and on to a more demanding stretch of undulating road.

Potholes and sharp expansion joints can send jolts through the Octavia’s structure, and its body can take a moment to settle after a speed hump. It's rather like being in a small boat hitting a big wave, but for the most part it’s more comfortable than its direct rivals.

The Sportline comes with slightly firmer suspension to reduce the effect. If you prefer a more tightly controlled ride, try the Seat Leon  or  Toyota Corolla .

An adaptive suspension system that allows you to stiffen or soften the ride is available as an option on SE L trim and above with the more powerful 148bhp engines. It's worth having because it allows you to dial out some of the float, for extra composure over wavy crests that your passengers will thank you for.

Skoda Octavia front left driving

Despite the softness of its suspension, the Octavia is perfectly capable when it comes to corners. Its steering is precise and has plenty of reassuring weight, providing a good sense of connection to the front tyres.

The Sportline, with its 15mm lowered suspension, resists body lean a little better and its progressive steering setup sharpens up its initial response.

The Octavia grips tenaciously through bends but leans more than a Ford Focus or Seat Leon, meaning that it ultimately doesn’t feel quite as agile. That’s not to say it’s ever anything less than stable and secure though.

Noise and vibration

The 1.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines both send a slight buzz through the Octavia's seats at higher revs, but it’s far from irritating. While the 1.5-litre petrol is quite vocal when worked hard, it’s far from harsh and the diesel is smoother and quieter than the equivalent engines in most direct rivals.

Unfortunately, wind and road noise aren't as well isolated as they are in a Ford Focus, and you can hear the suspension working away as it tries to smooth out broken surfaces and potholes.

When you lift off the accelerator pedal, automatic Octavias can coast out of gear to save fuel, before re-engaging drive smoothly when you put your foot down again. The stop-start system is smooth and quick to operate on the mild-hybrid engines.

"The Octavia’s soft suspension helps comfort, but when its floaty ride is mixed with a country road, it can leave passengers feeling rather queasy." –  Will Nightingale, Reviews Editor

Driving overview

Strengths Punchy performance; grippy handling; composed at high speed

Weaknesses Not as hushed as rivals

The interior layout, fit and finish

Driving position and dashboard.

The Skoda Octavia's steering wheel has lots of reach and rake adjustment and the seat has a good range of movement, so finding the right driving position is easy.

A powered driver’s seat with a memory function does make getting comfortable even easier, but it’s only available on SE L and Sportline models. All Octavias have adjustable lumbar support to help fend off back pain on long journeys.

Another feature that's standard across the range is an easy-to-read 10.3in digital driver's display that takes the place of conventional analogue dials. A head-up display that projects your speed and other information on to the windscreen is an option on SE L trim and above.

Unfortunately, the air-con controls are located in the central touchscreen. True, the temperature icons are always on display at the bottom, but other climate functions are hidden away in one of the menus. That can prove a distraction if you need to fine-tune the settings while driving.

Visibility, parking sensors and cameras

The Octavia has large side windows and relatively thin windscreen pillars so looking forwards, or left and right at junctions, is easy.

As with many rivals, when you look back over your shoulder, there are a couple of large pillars in your way, and these tend to obscure what's lurking behind you. We'd also point out that the long, high tail is harder to judge than more upright rivals when reversing.

To help relieve parking worries, all versions come with front and rear parking sensors. A rear-view camera is standard on Sportline trim, while a system called Park Assist that will steer the car into a space for you is part of an expensive Assisted Drive Package Plus.

Bright LED headlights and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror are standard across the range, but they can be upgraded on Sportline trim at a cost to adaptive matrix LED headlights. These are twice as bright as the standard units on full beam and automatically adjust the light pattern to avoid blinding other drivers.

Skoda Octavia interior dashboard

Sat nav and infotainment

Helpfully, Skoda has positioned the infotainment touchscreen in the Octavia high on the dashboard so you don’t have to take your eyes far from the road to see it. All models come with a 13.0in touchscreen, Bluetooth, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring, a DAB radio and built-in sat-nav .

The system’s graphics look sharp and it responds to inputs quickly enough. You can also add your most frequently used shortcuts to the top corner of the screen for convenience. However, some of the icons could be bigger to make them easier to aim for, and some of the functions (such as for the head-up display and massaging seats) can be difficult to locate in the menus. Helpfully, you can use voice control to switch these on and off for you.

At least you get a row of physical buttons below the touchscreen that takes you directly to some of the menu pages, including the drive modes, climate settings and the park assist function. That said, the infotainment system in the BMW 1 Series has more logical menus and a physical dial controller between the front seats to make it much easier to use while driving.

You can have up to five USB-C ports in your Octavia: two in a handy cubby in front of the gearlever, another two for rear-seat passengers and another up by the rear-view mirror (to power a dashcam). Wireless phone-charging is also standard.

Plush, squidgy plastics are present on the top and front of the Octavia's dashboard and above the armrests on the doors. There are some harder plastics lower down, but they're pleasingly textured and everything feels solidly screwed together. SE L trim gets a faux-suede surface for part of the dashboard and a wider range of seating upholstery, lifting the ambience further.

The stalks behind the steering wheel feel good to use, as do the steering wheel buttons, but the metal-effect scroll wheels on the spokes feel a little flimsy.

All in all, the Octavia is as solid inside as the Corolla but a little plusher, and miles ahead of the Focus and Astra. All must bow down to the 1 Series for best in class quality, though.

An eight-speaker audio system is standard, but a 12-speaker upgrade is available as an option on non-mild hybrid versions.

"The touch-sensitive shortcut icons, being on the left-hand side of the screen, proves quite a stretch to reach, especially for shorter drivers." –  Claire Evans, Consumer Editor

Interior overview

Strengths Great forward visibility; all versions come with driver’s seat lumbar adjustment; high quality materials used

Weaknesses Some functions could be easier to find

Passenger & boot space

How it copes with people and clutter, front space.

There’s plenty of space up front in the Skoda Octavia. A very tall driver will be able to get comfortable even with a head room-robbing panoramic glass roof fitted. Storage is better than in most rivals, too: each door pocket can take a 1.5-litre bottle of water and the cooled glovebox is big enough to keep your lunch fresh.

Behind the gearlever are two fixed cupholders that will keep your coffee-to-go secure and, ingeniously, can grip drinks bottles tightly enough that you can twist off the cap with one hand. In front of the gear selector is a handy tray that’s big enough for a large mobile phone to sit next to your house keys and wallet or purse.

There’s also a large covered storage space under the front armrest for hiding electronic devices and other valuables. Like the glove box, it's cooled, so it's ideal for a second round of sandwiches.

The Octavia is pretty generous on rear-seat space. Behind a tall driver with their seat pushed back, even taller passengers will be able to lounge in comfort, and there’s loads of elbow room. Anyone regularly carrying giants, should be aware that the Ford Focus and the Seat Leon offer even more rear space.

The middle rear-seat passenger has no choice but to place their feet on either side of the car’s raised central floor hump, but the big footwells mean this isn’t too restrictive. The Octavia’s rear seat is surprisingly wide, making it a very comfortable car for three back-seat passengers to sit side by side in.

A central armrest with two cupholders is standard on all models, and the rear door pockets are a decent size. Every model has a map pocket on the back of each front seat, along with a smaller smartphone pocket, plus sizeable rear door bins. An additional storage tray mounted on top of the centre transmission tunnel is optional as part of the Family Package.

Skoda Octavia boot open

Seat folding and flexibility

In terms of its flexibility, the Octavia is pretty conventional by family car standards. The folding rear seats follow the usual 60/40 split arrangement (the Mercedes A-Class gets a more flexible 40/20/40 split).

We like the fact that they can be folded by levers in the boot, so you don’t have to open a side door before loading that bulky flat-pack furniture you’ve just bought.

Unfortunately, though, the seats don’t lie completely flat when folded, and they leave an awkward step in the extended load area.

The Octavia’s boot is not only huge compared with similar-sized rivals, but it also beats most competitors from the class above.

The load area is longer and taller than in most comparably priced hatchbacks, and it’s a practical, squared-off shape. The only downside is that there is quite a significant lip to negotiate when lifting heavy items in and out of it, and there's no option of having an adjustable boot floor.

If you need more boot space, you might also want to consider the Skoda Octavia Estate  (which does have an adjustable boot floor).

As standard, there’s a 12V socket, a couple of bag hooks and a couple of fenced-off areas that will stop your de-icer and other boot clutter sliding around. Options include a space-saver spare wheel that sits under the boot floor. An electric tailgate with hands-free gesture control is standard on SE L trim.

"A height-adjustable boot floor would be great, but it's otherwise hard to complain about the Octavia's practicality," –  Lawrence Cheung, New Cars Editor

Practicality overview

Strengths Will comfortably fit four occupants; useful boot capacity

Weaknesses Rear seats could be more versatile; no adjustable boot floor

Buying & owning

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is, costs, insurance groups, mpg and co2.

The entry-level price of a Skoda Octavia in SE Technology trim is very similar to a Vauxhall Astra . It costs more than the equivalent Seat Leon but less than a Ford Focus or  Toyota Corolla .

Even top-end SE L and Sportline will set you back much less than equivalent premium models, such as the Mercedes A-Class .

Skoda is usually generous with deposit contributions, so it’s fair to expect a monthly PCP finance rate that’s competitive with the Leon and undercuts the Astra.

Official CO2 emissions are broadly in line with those of the Focus and the Astra, although the hybrid Corolla and Honda Civic perform noticeably better. If you're looking for a company car that attracts low BIK tax you're likely to be better off with a plug-in hybrid or electric car .

Equipment, options and extras

Entry-level SE Technology trim comes with 16in alloy wheels, heated front seats, keyless ignition, dual-zone climate control and cruise control. It's available with the TSI 116 petrol engine or one of the TDI diesels.

If you go for our recommended TSI 150 petrol engine, you have to step up to SE L trim or higher. That gets you larger 17in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, ambient lighting, keyless entry, a heated front windscreen and adaptive cruise control.

Sportline is a sportier equivalent to SE L and comes with 18in alloy wheels, a small black rear spoiler, sports front seats and aluminium pedals.

Skoda Octavia infotainment touchscreen

Reliability

The Octavia performed poorly in the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey finishing down near the bottom of the 29 family cars polled. It was above the Audi A3 and the VW Golf but behind its other rivals.

In the manufacturer table, Skoda fared better, claiming 16th place out of the 32 included brands. Toyota did far better, claiming second place, but Skoda’s other rivals finished further down the table – Seat taking 18th, BMW 12th, Mercedes 24th and Ford 17th.

If things do go wrong, you’ve got a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty that can be extended to five years and 100,000 miles for a fee. With the Corolla, you can extend the warranty up to 10 years or 100,000 miles if you service your car at a main dealer each year. Kia's class-leading standard warranty gives you seven years or 100,000 miles of cover.

Safety and security

The Octavia received the top five-star safety rating from  Euro NCAP  and was found to be better at protecting adult occupants than the Focus in the event of a crash. The Corolla scored better marks for side-impact protection than both, but that car didn't perform as well as the Octavia in some front crashes.

Automatic emergency braking ( AEB ), lane-keeping assist, traffic-sign recognition and an e-call system that notifies the emergency services if you’re involved in an accident are standard on all models.

Blind-spot monitoring can be added to SE L trim as part of the Assisted Drive Package Plus to warn you of traffic approaching behind you.

"On our carefully controlled test route, an Octavia paired with the 1.5-litre petrol engine averaged a frugal 48.5mpg, beating a rival Seat Leon’s 46.3mpg effort." –  Neil Winn, Deputy Reviews Editor

Strengths Well-equipped

Weaknesses Currently no plug-in hybrid option for company car drivers

When tested by our team of experienced road testers, the Octavia was awarded the full five stars, which is no mean feat. Compared to its family car rivals, it's more accomplished in most areas, including practicality, quality and value for money.

Yes. In fact, thanks to the Octavia’s larger dimensions, you’ll find that it’s far more practical than the VW Golf , with a far superior boot, and more comfortable for passengers in all of the seats.

Octavia Scout

Usability in wide range of driving conditions is the main virtue of the Scout version, based on the Combi body style. Besides all the benefits of the standard version, it boasts a new set of capabilities, equal to those of crossover vehicle. The ground clearance raised by 30 mm, 4×4 drive with 5th generation electrohydraulically controlled inter-axle multi-plate clutch, multi-link rear axle and engines with output of up to 135 kW make it possible to easily overcome the obstacles of unpaved roads.

Model Description

Technical data, bodywork / derivatives.

In both its liftback and estate versions, the fourth generation of the bestselling Octavia has a more emotionally charged look than its predecessors. It is also roomier and safer and comes with even more connectivity options than ever before. The luggage compartment, too, is bigger. The newly conceived interior combines great functionality and ergonomics with ample space, high-quality materials and thought-provoking design features. The Scout version, available solely as an estate, offers a more robust look and a greater sense of safety on unpaved roads. The Octavia Scout can be fitted with front- or all-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive comes with either a 1.5 TSI/110 kW or 2.0 TDI/85 kW petrol engine. The most powerful petrol and diesel engine, the 2.0 TSI/140 kW and 2.0 TDI/147 kW, is reserved for the 4×4 drive.

A striking exterior

octavia tour scout

What makes the Scout’s design unique is its front and rear bumper with a protective silver cover, the black plastic trim for the wheel arches, sills and bumpers, the silver wing mirror covers and 18” Braga wheels.

Comfort for everyone

octavia tour scout

The Scout’s ergonomic seats are upholstered in a black/brown Thermoflux® cover. With 4.5 times more air permeability, this material ensures that all passengers enjoy maximum comfort. The interior colour scheme is complemented by the dashboard’s partial trim with brown-stitched brown fabric and model-specific Ash Wood décor.

octavia tour scout

The Octavia Scout is exclusively fitted with an off-road mode for driving on unpaved roads. This function adapts the settings of the driving stability systems (ABS, ASR, ESC and others) to off-road driving. It also includes hill descent control. Drivers can set three monitored parameters of their choice on the infotainment screen (compass, altimeter, wheel angle, coolant temperature gauge, oil temperature gauge). The off-road navigation system records journeys on unmapped routes. It can then offer the option of navigating according to points en route that have been recorded in this way.

Enhanced safety

octavia tour scout

A standard feature of the Octavia Scout is the centre airbag on the inner side of the driver’s backrest. This centre airbag, the tenth to be incorporated into the Octavia Scout’s interior, is designed to protect the driver and front passenger from colliding into each other, especially if the car is hit from the side.

Head-up display

octavia tour scout

The optional head-up display projects important information – such as current speed, navigation instructions, detected traffic signs, and enabled driver-assistance systems – directly on to the windscreen.

Skoda Octavia Estate facelift review

4.5 out of 5

  • Smart design
  • Efficient and punchy engines
  • No longer a budget choice
  • Rivals have longer warranties
  • Steering lacks feel

Verdict – is the Skoda Octavia Estate a good car?

The Skoda Octavia is already a particularly practical car for its class, and the Estate version takes things up a notch with its huge boot, fulfilling its key selling point over the standard model very successfully. It’s offered with plenty of efficient and peppy engines, though to drive, rivals such as the Ford Focus Estate are more engaging if that matters to you. Rivals also offer more attractive warranties and prices of the Octavia Estate have crept up over the generations, so it’s no longer the budget choice.

Skoda Octavia Estate models, specs and alternatives

If you need a big, practical family car then the Skoda Octavia Estate should be on your shortlist. It’s long been one of the best options in this market sector, whether you appreciate space, value for money or even a good driving experience. This new version still lives up to that reputation despite competition from the excellent Ford Focus Estate , SEAT Leon Estate , and the  Toyota Corolla Touring Sports estate . The Octavia Estate saw off all of those rivals to win the Best Estate Car award in the Carbuyer Best Car Awards 2024 ,  and the year before  that.

Best estate cars 2024

The Skoda Octavia Estate was facelifted for the 2024 model year bringing a refreshed new look and some extra kit as standard. It gets new matrix-LED headlights with revised daytime-running lights, a tweaked front bumper with a less fussy design and new tail-lights, alloy wheel and colour options.

Like previous generations of the Octavia, it uses parts shared with the Volkswagen Golf , but like many Skoda products, the Octavia and the Octavia Estate aim to offer the practicality and proportions of cars from the class above at a more affordable price.

It’s packed with technology too, including a sharp and easy-to-use infotainment screen on the dash that houses the sat-nav, smartphone link software and other useful features. Top models also get a fully-digital instrument cluster that can be configured to display full-screen maps. Small touches such as ambient lighting and soft-touch materials mean the Octavia’s cabin feels upmarket and more like something you’d expect to find in a Volkswagen, or perhaps even an Audi.

Skoda Octavia Estate facelift rear quarter

The Octavia has always been a class-leader when it comes to boot space and this new Estate model is actually even bigger than before (by 30 litres) at 640 litres with the seats in place. The plug-in hybrid models are a bit smaller inside at 490 litres, however, due to the need to carry a battery pack. There’s lots of room in the cabin for people and plenty of storage cubbies, though, so all versions are great for family life.

Since the facelift, the Octavia Estate’s engine range has changed slightly. The lineup starts with a four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine, with Skoda having dropped the previous entry-level 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit. With 114bhp, it’s a little more powerful than the old 1.0-litre unit, but there’s also a 148bhp version of the same 1.5-litre engine sitting above it. Both of these come as standard with a six-speed manual, or they can be optioned with a seven-speed automatic – go for the auto and you even get mild-hybrid assistance.

Skoda Octavia Estate facelift driving

Fans of diesel will be happy to know that this is still an option post-facelift, with 114bhp and 148bhp versions of the 2.0-litre engine available. The lesser-powered of the two comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the more powerful one gets a seven-speed automatic.

With adaptive suspension fitted the Octavia soaks up the bumps of UK road surfaces with aplomb, and is best left in Normal mode, where the Octavia is both relaxing and composed to drive. While its chassis rightly prioritises refinement and comfort, with some body lean in corners as a result, it offers plenty of grip, light steering and respectable driving dynamics.
