Travel insurance for business

Chances are your business is about your people. Whatever your size, travel insurance for business protects your employees when they travel for you. We cover businesses and professionals from financial losses that occur through international and domestic travel for work.

We can advise you on the right travel insurance packages for your business. Plus we can leverage our scale and relationships with insurers to secure competitive corporate travel insurance cover for you.

Who needs travel insurance for business?

  • Small to medium business
  • Self employed
  • Irregular and frequent business travellers
  • Domestic and international travellers

What does business travel insurance cover?

You can get cover for a range of travel risks including:

  • Overseas medical and hospital costs
  • Stolen and lost luggage
  • Trip cancellations
  • Flight delays
  • Rental vehicle excess costs.
  • Costs to send a substitute employee to cover a staff member who can’t complete travel.

You’ll have access to numbers to call 24/7 for support with your travel emergency wherever you are, plus support for claims that may arise.

Travel insurance options

Travel insurance policies and solutions include:

  • Annual business travel insurance policy - An annual travel policy can be easier to manage and more cost effective than negotiating business travel insurance for every trip and every employee separately. You simply estimate the number and nature of overseas business trips your staff will take over the course of a year, and pay one deposit based on that estimate. At the end of 12 months, we compare the actual travel with the estimate and then make adjustments accordingly.

Travel insurance for international students

Travel insurance for visitors  - cover for those on working, working holiday or other temporary visas

  • Personal travel insurance - single trip or annual multi trips

Before proceeding, please confirm that all travellers under 19 are dependants of the adult travellers. If the child is not classified under the above terms then please treat them as an adult traveller within this policy.

  • Journeys can be up to a maximum of 90 days.
  • Purchasing an Already Overseas policy is limited to one journey every 12 months.
  • There is no cover provided for the first 72 hours from the start date of your certificate of insurance.

 business travel insurance  FAQ'S

Just because you're travelling for work, doesn't mean you're any less vulnerable. There are a multitude of travel mishaps that could affect your trip. Business travel can be unexpectedly expensive - especially if you have an accident, get sick, lose your passport, or are stuck in an airport for days on end.  That’s why corporate travel insurance is essential for your next work away day!

Q. Does your frequent traveller policy cover for business trips?

Yes, our frequent traveller plan covers you both at work and play that’s the beauty of this policy. An annual multi-trip policy covers you for lots of little trips throughout the year, not one single trip with a duration of 12 months. Keep in mind that for each business trip you take there is a limit on the number of days that you can be away. This is known as a ‘maximum trip duration’. The best thing, you don’t need to tell us when you’re travelling or where you’re going!

Q. What is TINZ’s age limit?

Persons of any age can buy a policy, however trip limits do apply. Those under 69 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 18 months only. Those over 70 can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 6 months only. Our frequent traveller policy is only available to travellers aged 64 and under.

Q. Is my work laptop or phone covered?

We cover to repair or replace the cost of any personal effects that are lost, stolen or accidentally damaged during your journey. This includes items such as cameras, laptops, tablets and mobile phones which belong to you, not your business.

Q. Is personal or legal liability covered for business trips?

No, we will not pay for any amount you become legally liable for if your claim arises directly or indirectly from, or is in any way connected with your employment in any business, profession, trade or occupation.

Q.  Do you cover employees with pre-existing medical conditions?

Travel insurance only provides cover for emergency overseas medical events that are unforeseen. Medical conditions that were pre-existing at the time of the policy being issued are not covered, unless they are a condition that we expressly agree to cover. For further information and a see a full list of covered conditions.

Q: What is rental vehicle excess?

Most rental cars come with standard hire car insurance included (often called basic insurance), but if your hire car is damaged or stolen, the ‘excess’ is the amount of money you have to pay the rental company upon returning the vehicle. The excess is usually around $3,000 to $5,000 for a standard vehicle. Should you have a ding in your hire car you're covered up to $6,000 for the rental vehicle excess applicable whether it was your fault or someone else’s.

Q.  DO YOU COVER employees on work visas who are NON-RESIDENTs?

No, our plans are only available to New Zealand residents at this time.

Q.  How long does it take to apply for corporate travel insurance?

How quickly can you talk? It only takes a few minutes. Taking out travel insurance is a very straight forward process, with only about four questions to answer unlike car or home insurance applications.

Q. Are family members covered in my business travel insurance policy?

Only those listed in your Certificate of Insurance will be covered under your policy.

Q. Do you cover adventure activities on corporate away days?

We automatically cover you for a wide range of activities while you’re away, however some activities require an additional premium. Check the full list of sports adventure activities.

Q. Do you cover loss of income?

We cover you for injury which occurs during an overseas journey which causes you to become disabled within 30 days of the injury, and as a result you cannot do your normal work and lose your income. General exclusions apply for certain trades or occupations, particularly hazardous risky activities and if you do not act in a responsible way to protect yourself. See Policy Document for more details.

Q. when am I not covered?

We will not cover you if your claim is recoverable by compensation under any workers compensation or transport accident laws.

Q. What do I do if I need to make a claim?

If you need to make a claim please review the ‘ Make A Claim ’ section of our website it will detail the steps to make a claim.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Looking for cover from the experts? Get business class cover with Covermore . Both business and leisure travel is allowed.

What policy should I buy for my business?

Individual business insurance If you’ve just got one employee to arrange cover for, this is the policy you’ll need. You don't need to do anything different to select a business trip on our comparison. You can either chose to buy a single trip policy, or if you know the individual will be going overseas on a regular basis it’s best to buy an annual multi trip policy to cover for unlimited trips over the year. For business trips each journey throughout the year cannot exceed a maximum number of days - usually 90 days is the longest duration. These limits apply to both leisure and business travel.

Group policy If you’ve got a group of employees to cover, instead of each person buying individual cover, simply buy one policy to cover all travellers. It very important to make sure you know everyone’s medical history as the   group organiser is responsible for answering all the questions on behalf of the whole group.  Before you buy, make sure you know everyone’s name, date of birth and all pre-existing medical conditions . If an employee does have a pre-existing medical condition they might be required to complete a medical questionnaire before the policy can be purchased, depending on what the condition is.

Domestic trips only If business travel is just within New Zealand you might consider a basic policy or cancellation only policy to cover transport delays and cancellation.

What typically covered?

Medical and hospital expenses Cover in case you are injured or sick while overseas. Includes hospital stays, surgery, dental and prescription drugs.

Luggage and personal effects If your baggage and personal items are lost, stolen, or damaged you would be reimbursed or the items replaced.

Cancellation cover Cover for prepaid travel & accommodation if you need to cancel because of illness, accident, natural disaster or unforeseen circumstance.

Personal liability Provides protection for you being legally liable for injuring other people or causing damage to their property.

Travel delay expenses In the event your transport is delayed due to an unforeseen reason, your accommodation, meals, and transport costs will be covered.

Rental vehicle excess If you hire a car and have an accident, you won't have to pay the excess (this could be as much as $8k!)

Alternative transport If your transport is cancelled on your way to a pre-booked event alternative transportation will be provided.

And much more!

What's usually not?

Older travellers Age restrictions may apply to business travel insurance policies.

Long trips If purchasing annual cover, just like standard frequent traveller insurance, each individual trip may have trip duration limits to pay attention to.

Cancellations Business travel insurance typically does not cover cancellation or shortened trips due to any work-related issues, such as annual leave being cancelled. However, if you, or your travelling companion are made redundant and you were not aware before you purchased your policy you might be eligible for cancellation cover.

Read the small print

We can't stress enough how each insurer's terms and conditions vary dramatically. It's essential that you always read the PDS in full before you purchase your corporate cover to ensure that it is right for your trip.

Domestic Policy FAQ's

Why buy state domestic cover.

Our Domestic and Domestic Cancellation plans are for New Zealand residents travelling within New Zealand.

More than one third of domestic travellers experience an unexpected circumstance that can leave them out of pocket.

It doesn’t matter if you are travelling to Auckland or Amsterdam, if your child becomes unwell and you need to cancel your trip, it’s good to know you’re covered.

Specific terms, conditions and exclusions apply to Covid-19. See our State Travel Policy Wording for full details.

Here are some examples of real-life stories

  • An airline lost a customer’s suitcase and the items were not recoverable Luggage Value: $2,500
  • A customer’s rental vehicle was written off after a third-party collision Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess: $4,000.

Here are some examples of types of claims

Medical claims*

  • Sprained limbs or broken arm, leg, wrist due to outdoor activities

*Pre-existing medical conditions must be declared, and extra cover purchased under Domestic Plan prior to departure

Your cancellation costs prior to travel

  • Prepaid deposits on motorhome rentals, scenic train, or ferry tickets

Luggage claims

  • Broken cameras, smartphones and electronic items
  • Lost spectacles, hearing aids and damaged dentures.

What Domestic options are available?

We offer 3 Domestic plan options to choose from and these can be purchased quickly and easily on our website.

Domestic plan (Single Trip Policy or Annual Multi-Trip Policy)

Our Domestic plan (Single Trip Policy and Annual Multi-Trip Policy) is our most comprehensive domestic plan.

The Domestic plan Annual Multi-Trip Policy is sometimes a more suitable option for those travellers who are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand.

Domestic Cancellation plan Single Trip Policy

Our Domestic Cancellation plan covers domestic travellers for cancellation cover only and you choose the cancellation cover limit to best meet your needs when you purchase your policy.

What activities are covered?

There are plenty of fun activities to do around New Zealand year-round, and we have a comprehensive list of activities which are covered under our Domestic plans (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan).

Our plans automatically include:

  • Bungy Jumping
  • Horse Riding
  • Jet Boating
  • Paragliding
  • Parasailing
  • Snorkelling
  • White Water Rafting

Other activities may be covered as an add-on to your Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation plan). See our State Travel Policy for full details.

What cover is available for Skiing and Snowboarding?

Because being on the snow and participating in winter sports activities often increases the risk of injuries or incidents, you'll need to ensure you amend your Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation plan) to include snow activities like skiing and snowboarding by purchasing a winter cover (snow sports) upgrade. This can help protect you against unforeseen costs should you have a mishap on the slopes and need medical assistance. Sporting and ski equipment are not covered whilst in use and if you are a New Zealand citizen, ACC may cover some costs due to injury caused by an accident.

You will only be covered if you have purchased the Domestic Plan with the winter cover (snow sports) upgrade and:

  • You are skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling on-piste, or cross-country skiing;
  • You are not participating in a Professional capacity; and
  • You are not racing.

Note: sporting and ski equipment are not covered whilst in use.

What if I travel frequently in NZ, do you have a multi-trip option?

Multi-trip travel insurance may save you time and money. If you are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand, consider our Domestic Plan Annual Multi-Trip Policy.

Can you explain the rental vehicle insurance excess?

This benefit applies to our Domestic Plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan) and covers the rental vehicle excess if your rental vehicle is stolen, or damaged while you are driving. You will still need to take out rental vehicle insurance.

A $4,000 rental vehicle excess cover can save you money if you need to make a claim.

Note: that your rental agreement may still require you to take out rental vehicle insurance.

If you are driving your personal vehicle on your domestic holiday there is bonus cover of $2,500 for your comprehensive vehicle insurance excess.

What does the medical cover provide for?

Our Domestic Plan D *(excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan) can provide you with cover for unexpected medical and dental expenses up to $1,500. This is for treatment provided in New Zealand.

It only applies up to 12 months from when you suffered a disabling injury, sickness, or disease. Travel insurance protects you from unforeseen events. Routine medical or dental treatments, prenatal visits and continuation of treatments are not covered.

What existing medical conditions are covered?

We automatically cover a range of existing medical conditions (EMC) under the Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan). Automatically covered conditions include - asthma, epilepsy, gastric reflux and more! Read the State Travel Policy Wording for a full list of the conditions we automatically cover. If your existing medical conditions are not all automatically covered, you may complete an online medical assessment to determine if cover is available. Other travel insurance benefits unrelated to your EMC still apply, even if cover cannot be provided for your specific condition/s.

*Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from onset. Medical and dental expenses cover is limited to $1,500 for treatment provided in New Zealand. This $1,500 sub-limit does not apply to International or Inbound Plans.

Got a question about travel insurance? We're here to help

What is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover several costs and disruptions when travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per plan; however, travel insurance can typically help protect against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, overseas medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. Things like the destination, length of trip, optional additional cover for specific activities and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of a travel insurance policy varies from traveller to traveller because various factors affect the amount payable.

At Cover-More, we consider a number of factors when calculating the total amount payable. The following is a guide on these key factors, how they combine and how they may impact the assessment of risk and therefore the premium paid:

  • Area: higher risk areas cost more.
  • Departure date and trip duration: the longer the period until you depart and the longer your trip duration, the higher the cost may be.
  • Age: higher risk age groups cost more.
  • Plan: International Comprehensive+, which provides more cover, costs more than International Comprehensive or Domestic.
  • Excess: on some policies you can choose the excess amount.
  • Cruise cover: additional premium applies.
  • Cancellation cover: on some policies you can choose your own level of cancellation cover. The more cancellation cover you require, the higher the cost may be.
  • Adding cover for Existing Medical Conditions and pregnancy (where available): additional premium may apply if a medical assessment is completed and cover is accepted by us.
  • Options to vary cover (where available): additional premium applies.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Policy Wording to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may impact your travel plans. By purchasing travel insurance with cancellation cover prior to departure, your policy can help by providing cover for the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of overseas medical treatment, lost passports, and personal items while you’re travelling.

The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval. To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as medical reports, itemised medical bills or police reports to confirm the incident occurred.

However, at Cover-More, if our customer becomes ill overseas, they can also contact our 24-Hour Emergency Assistance team for support and to seek approval for expensive medical bills to be paid directly by us to the medical care provider/s instead.

Always read the Policy Wording before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

What does – and doesn’t – travel insurance cover?

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the  Policy Wording  before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated if claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including cancellation, pre-existing medical conditions, theft or loss of belongings, adventure sports, COVID-19 scenarios and more.

For full details of the exclusions within our Cover-More travel insurance plans, consult the  Policy Wording .

When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

The best time to purchase travel insurance is as soon as a trip is booked, as this can increase protection. When purchased ahead of time, a Cover-More customer can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the 21-day cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before departing on the trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made where cancellation cover is added to the policy.
