Answering the Call of the Cailleach

September 25-October 4, 2023

Welcome to Ireland!

The Cailleach, an ancient creation goddess of Ireland calls to us to journey into the power of the land and the rolling hills of Ireland.  She guides us deep into our roots and the one true self.  She unravels the old fabric of your life, discarding it out to sea.  Her cauldron and its primordial materia medica strips you bare like the fall winds leaving the forests naked.  And then...you are ready to be made anew.

It's here, where we lean against the extremities of the natural world --caves, cliffs, woodland groves, winding roads and sea that lead us wandering as the Cailleach works her magic on us.

Sept. 25 - Oct. 4, 2023

Receive in Brigid's Blessing

Your journey begins in Kildare where we'll visit the healing well of Brigid, and peer into her well, practicing the art of scrying.

What does she reveal to you?

We'll ask for her blessing on our journey through her magical lands of the Emerald Isle as we head west towards Limerick to encounter Ireland's largest stone circle in Lough Gur .

Here, we'll also meet our local guide who will be joing our group for the next four days as we travel deeper into both mystery and ancient lands of the Celtic people.

Connect to Your Ancestors

On our way to the shores of the Wild Atlantic Way, we'll explore Da Chich Anann, also known as Paps Danu noted as one of the world's sacred mountains. The name stands for the "breasts of Anu", Ireland's mother goddess.

According to myth and legend. Anu returned the Tuatha de Danann -a tribe of spiritually gifted people, back to Ireland through a magical mist.  The mist, believed to be the loving embrace of Anu.

Stirring Your Inner Cauldron

We travel deeper into the earth mysteries as we travel to the Ring of Beara, a wild and relatively unexplored area of Ireland where sea and rock meet.

Here, we'll commune with the Cailleach, Ireland's winter hag and creation goddess.

We'll reach deep into the Cailleach's cauldron as she stirs your soul awake , and the Weaver Goddess weaves our new stories, while diving deep into the old myths.

Receive in the Magic

Our journey continues through the iconic landscape of the Ring of Kerry and then on to the otherworldly landscape of the Dingle Peninsula, commonly called Corca Dhuibhne.

Its name means "seed or tribe of Duibhne", a Gaelic clan name from the Tuath of Corca Dhuibhne who once occupied the peninsula.

We'll stop to wander through Dingle -an enchanting Irish Village with colorful buildings that line the streets.

And later, we'll head north, through the unique geological landscape of the Burren where we'll visit the Cliffs of Moher.

Uragh Stone Circle

uragh-stone-circle-179_6915.jpg

We're spending four days touring through Ireland's most magical landscape in County Kerry.   The Ring of Beara, the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula have some of the most wild and breathtaking terrain with pockets of Gaelic speaking people.  Along with its striking beauty, this area has several neolithic monuments, stone circles, medieval castles and allegedly, the world's oldest footprints.

While wandering through this magical landscape, it's easy to slip into the space between worlds where we hear the voices of our ancestors, and the stone circles become the portals to the Otherworld.  Some of my most profound mystical experiences have taken place amongst the standing stones.

Cultural Delights

The Irish Knit Sweater

Traditional Irish knit sweaters are found in local shops and woolen mills all across Ireland.  And they are a treasure!  Living in the northeast US, my Irish knits are my go to sweaters for winter warmth.

Traditional Aran sweaters were born out of the seafaring communities of the Aran Isles and is the ultimate symbol of the Irish Clan Heritage.

Seaweed Baths in Connemara

Along the western shore of Ireland, you'll rejuvenate your tired muscles as you soak i n warm seaweed baths, once called "the sailor's cure" by ancient mariners.

Seaweed is one of the oldest life-forms on our planet and is mineral rich.  It detoxifies, tones and cleanses the skin, leaving it so soft and fresh.

Burren Perfumery

The Burren is an unusual geological landscape with a variety of unique plants.  Nestled amongst gardens, tucked away from the rest of the world is a lovely perfumery with scents and herbal produc ts inspired by the Burren landscape, herb gardens and a sweet cafe.

Irish Coffee & Fresh Fish Stew

Traveling through Ireland's western shores, we will be warmly greeted by the Irish in their local pubs where we'll find fresh fish and lamb stews.  Later in the evening, as we retire to the cozy underground pub in our hotel, we'll warm our toes by a crackling fire as we sip a mug of hot Irish coffee.

Walking in what is believed to be some of the oldest footprints, we are anchored to both ourselves, the land, and the ancient Mother Goddess. Here we discover the incredible joy and safety in surrendering ourselves to the mother of the land.

Time for Renewal

Your final two nights on the western shores of Ireland will be spent in lovely Galway --a bohemian city with a love of traditional music.

From here, we'll venture into the Connemara region.  Oscar Wilde described this area of Ireland as "savage beauty", and I think you'll agree as we make our way through mountainous terrain on our way to Kylemore Abbey.  After, you'll have time to soak in a hot seaweed bath - something the Connemara region is known for.

Returning to Galway from a day exploring, we'll take time to enjoy our cozy hotel, visit Irish shops and end our day with pub food, a Guinness or perhaps, a hot Irish coffee.

Entering the Womb

Your final day of our magical journey through Ireland will be spent at the megalithic sites in County Meath.  The ancient tombs where the light of the sun travels down into the womb of the earth is a place of spiritual conception .  Here, you'll be impregnated with the consciousness of light and gain both insight and inspiration for moving forward.  We'll follow in the footsteps of the Celts and the Druids as we visit Loughcrew, Newgrange and the Hill of Tara before returning to Dublin for our final night.

Newgrange_Knowth_istock_Trista Haggerty.jpg

Your Initiaton

34_edited.png

To discover the light within the earth, is to journey into the Underworld where the Dark Goddess resides, the Cailleach.  Newer myths and religious dogma pushed the Goddess underground.  Thankfully, in Ireland, the Goddess traditions were sustained longer than any place in the world.  Etched into the ancient stones, carried by the winds of the sea, the Goddess unveils herself to you as you attune to her realm.

This initiation is a return to your ancient lineage of oral traditions that will stir your soul awake. You'll be working closely with the power of the Cailleach and the Weaver Goddess, two of the oldest forms of earth energy.  Together we'll weave new stories into our lives and into the earth for humanity's blossoming consciousness.

Any journey into the Underworld provides powerful healing and transformation.  It is the Cailleach's cauldron, the original grail, that discards the old and provides deep healing and renewal.

While wandering the shores of The Wild Atlantic Way, we'll search for hag stones, traditionally held in high regard for Druidic ritual.  Some say, that only through the hole of the hag stone, can you see the Cailleach, the old woman of the land.

After spending our days out in the elements, we'll return to our cozy lodging, settle in by a warm fire and partake in the ancient tradition of doll-making as a way to further connect to the Cailleach.

If you'd like to continue your work with the Cailleach and the energies of the primordial goddess after this trip, consider joining the

Women of the Wildwood , a 6-month, online course where I guide you through the darker days of the nature year. Live calls, along with

four seasonal journals, The Crone's Cauldron

containing seasonal rituals, stories and my favorite

recipes and remedies to enhance your journey.

  • Atlantic ocean and islands
  • Dolphins and Eagles
  • Waterfalls and caves

This tour is designed for guests who want to take their time to allow a deeper connection and experience during their visits to special mystical sites and landscapes. We will travel in a small group of likeminded people, so everyone will have the opportunities to be touched by these extraordinary environs.

We will meet with people who are at home in these places and who can tell us directly what they know about origins and traditions. You will hear stories, great Irish legends, will learn a lot about the Irish fairy world, and those inhabitants who were instrumental in shaping this small, yet magical island on the fringe of Europe. At the end of your holiday you may even take some of the peace and tranquillity of these places home with you and be inspired by of those particularly Irish attitudes and gestures of kindness.

Day 1:  Arrival Dublin – Hill of Tara – Kells/Tailteann Hill of Tara, the hill of the High Kings of Ireland, who ruled the lands from here; where legends and history mingle – a wonderful place to start a spiritual journey through Ireland. If possible we will stay in Teltown House tonight, an old country home and farm; on their lands a pre-Christian stone circle within a small graveyard has been preserved. In Teltown, or better Tailteann, a major festival took place during Celtic times, including competitive events, almost like Celtic Olympics.

Overnight Teltown House or a similar accommodation in the Kells area

Day 2:  Newgrange and Loughcrew Today we visit an amazing place, Newgrange portal tomb in the Boyne valley, the most famous mound here, erected approximately 3,200 BC. It was built aligning with the sun rising on Winter solstice and bringing its beam into the centre of the mound. Onwards then to Loughcrew or also called Sliabh na Callaighe – the Mountain of the Wise Woman or Witch, a sacred place with more than thirty gravemounds dating back to pre-Christian times 4th century BC. Also possible is a visit to the ruins of Kells Abbey with round tower and high cross. Here a part of the famous Book of Kells was created.

Day 3:  Hill of Uisneach – St John’s Wood – Rathcroghan Today we will delve into the great legends of Ireland, visiting the Hill of Uisneach which we will explore on a guided tour. Uisneach is the navel of Ireland, where according to legend, Queen Eriu lies buried, whose name was given to Ireland – Eire. We will travel along the shores of Lough Ree passing by St. John’s Wood, possibly the oldest surviving forest in Ireland. Next we reach Rathcroghan, home of Queen Maeve, where we go on a guided tour of the area including the Cave of the Cats – Oweynagat – where the veil between the worlds is particularly thin; it is sometimes called ‘a thin place’.

Overnight in the Sligo area

Day 4:  Knocknarea and Glencar We are driving West to Strandhill, here we can climb Knocknarea on a looped walk (327m, 2.5 km walk), where Queen Maeve is supposedly buried in one of Europe’s largest burial mounds. Strandhill has many options for a lovely lunch or a picnic at the beach. In the afternoon we travel North of Sligo to Glencar Waterfall, so eloquently described by W.B. Yeats

“ Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

Excerpt: William Butler Yeats, ‘The Stolen Child’ 1889

… A truly magical place.

Day 5:  Caves of Kesh or Eagles Flying – Visit to Pat’s farm After a short journey we will begin the day with a walk up to the limestone caves of Kesh: here according to oral history, one of Ireland’s greatest kings, Cormac MacArt, had been reared by a wolverine. Also, Diarmuid and Grainne found shelter here while on the run from Fionn MacCumhaill. In case of unfavourable weather, we have the option to visit “Eagles Flying”, a bird of prey research station near Ballymote, which would include a talk and demonstration. Further on we will meet Farmer Pat Noone on his Green Hills Farm. He will share some stories and experiences with fairy folk on his lands.

Overnight in Kinvara/Ballyvaughan area

Day 6:  Burren Karst Landscape The famous Burren, ‘An Bhoireann’ – this very special karst area is home to a great number of mystical places – ringforts, church ruins and sacred wells. John O’Donohue, philosopher and theologian, author of the widely acclaimed and translated “Anam Cara” (meaning soul friend), came from here. You will have the opportunity to explore his contemplations on this extraordinary landscape. Be open to being surprised…

Day 7: Aran Islands or Loop Head and Dolphins Boat trip to Inis Oírr or Inis Maan, one of the Aran Islands. As the saying goes: every angel visiting Ireland will stop at the Aran Islands. Or we travel to the most south westerly point this side of the Shannon, to Loop Head, where on a high plane the lighthouse was built. We continue on towards the Shannon estuary and take a boat trip out to observe dolphins.

Day 8: Galway – Dublin Airport Today will bring your goodbyes to Galway and Ireland – departing from Galway coach station, an express coach can bring you directly to Dublin Airport. Or you could extend your visit and spend some more time in Galway or Dublin. Please contact us , we are happy to help you organise these extra days.

I love Ireland

I will show you the genuine Ireland. I live in the country you are visiting. During the Winter time I go and find new ideas and contacts, excellent accommodation and interesting places.

We travel in small groups, meeting local people. We have an abundance of leisure to relax and unwind. We have the time for unplanned detours, should the opportunity arise.

Croagh Patrick, Mayo

Our Services

We are here.

We are at home here, we have the local knowledge and contacts to give you a truly unique experience. If you are not used to driving on the left hand side you will enjoy being chauffeured free of worries. We book your accommodation, events and activities and I am there for you to support you if needed.

Our vehicle for chauffeured tours is a practically new Volkswagen Transporter for maximum 8 guests, for 2021 we are limiting our guest numbers to 6. Sitting a bit higher than in a limousine you will have a great view and see more of the landscape passing by. For extended tours we have plenty of room for your luggage.

Sustainability and climate change

Environmental awareness is an important part of our travel philosophy. We prioritise partners and businesses who engage themselves in climate protection. The preservation of Ireland's natural habitats and precious historic sites is important to us. To counter CO2 emissions caused by travel we will plant a native Irish tree for each guest on one of our extended tours. Only a small part of Ireland's extensive forests is still existing today, with your help we want to support the natural reforestation of this island. Talk to us to find out more.

Mind, Body, Spirit Tours – with Mindie Burgoyne

Enjoy Spiritual tours of Scotland and Ireland covering ancient monuments, spiritual energy centers, and historical sites – all while traveling within the context of a story. These are Mind, Body, Spirit Travel with an experienced tour operator who has been traveling to Ireland’s sacred sites for over 20 years.

Thin Places tours go deep into the Celtic landscape. We bring guests to ancient and sacred sites in Ireland and Scotland exploring areas not often seen in big tour groups or self-drive tours. Though these are spiritual tours, they are not religious or affiliated with any type of organized religion.

Guests are guided by a storyteller/guide and allowed to travel slowly through some of the most mystical scenery in Western Europe. Mindie Burgoyne, author, and photographer  has crafted each tour to follow a particular theme focused on a geographic region. The tours move slowly and have flexibility. They are ideal for travelers who want to move within the context of a story  – the story of the landscape around them. Travelers on Thin Places Tours become images in that ancient landscape.

What is Included?

The cost of the International tours includes accommodations in 3 and 4-star hotels, all breakfasts, four dinners (including a welcome and farewell dinner), a private motorcoach, a full-time tour guide, additional local guides, and all admissions to any attractions on the itinerary. What to expect on this tour

Ireland Tour

We visit inspiring locations where the ancient spirits of each place still reside. In addition, some of you will be returning to the homes of your ancestors. This can raise spiritual and emotional issues. On our tours we seek to build a supportive atmosphere, and your fellow travellers tend to be of a supportive and understanding disposition. At different sites that we visit, you will be given opportunity for reflection and peace. This inner dimension is what makes our tours especially memorable – a pilgrimage and nourishment for the soul.

The pace is not rushed. There are some areas where we climb steps or hills, but otherwise each site is easily accessible and within walking distance from the coach. Nevertheless, you will get some physical exercise!

We are so grateful that we had the opportunity to discover Ireland’s ancient sites with Jamie and Linda. They were delightful and brought expertise in their knowledge of the Neolithic people. The two guest experts who joined the tour were outstanding in adding even more depth to the experience. Everything was perfect: beautiful hotels, comfortable transportation, spectacular scenery, stunning stone circles, and chambered mounds. Nothing was rushed giving us the time to absorb the intensity and beauty of each destination . Rosemary and Jamie, USA

Wow! Unless you are a frequent time traveller into the mystical Celtic past, the Beltane ceremony we created in Ireland’s largest stone circle near Lough Gur was incredible. It was truly like going back in time to pre-history and also experiencing all the love and healing needed for today’s world. Jamie, Linda and Eimear created a unique event, even for dedicated pagans. Jack’s expert knowledge of the ancients of Eire and their buildings and carvings on following days kept me fascinated. Not a “typical” tour – it is as advertised, “enchanted”! Ellie, USA

The IrishCentral vacation travel guide to mystical, mythological Ireland

Ireland is a land rich with mystery and myth with intriguing sites and stories. here's a stop-by-stop guide to some of ireland's most mythical historic attractions..

Knowth, megalithic towns in the Boyne Valley, County Meath.

From the ancient seat of the Celtic High Kings to the Mountain of the Witch; from the Celtic severed head ritual to the warrior Queen Maeve’s tomb, there are countless Irish mystical sites waiting to be explored, all of which have tales of pagan Celtic warriors, fairies and magic associated with them.

Here, we take you through a tour of some of Ireland’s most magical mythological sites:

Stop 1: The Boyne Valley : Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth, Hill of Tara & Hill of Slane , Co Meath

Brú na Bóinne (the Boyne Palace) spreads over Counties Meath and Louth. The Boyne Palace contains some of the most important historic sites and monuments in Ireland, including the massive, ancient passage tombs of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, the pagan headquarters of the Hill of Tara and the legendary Hill of Slane.

Newgrange is Ireland's most famous prehistoric site. As with most of the passage tombs in Ireland, archeologists believe that it was built around 3200 B.C., which means that Newgrange predates the construction of Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids in Egypt.

Newgrange was built so that during the winter solstice (dawn on the shortest day of the year), a narrow beam of sunlight illuminates the floor of the chamber at the end of the long passageway for about 17 minutes.

The Celtic myth says that Newgrange is a fairy mound or a sidh. A group of ancient people, the Tuatha Dé Danann, or “people of the goddess Danu,” dwelled there. Newgrange was built by the god Dagda and named for the goddess Boann.

Some say that the famous Irish mythological hero Cuchulainn was conceived in Newgrange.

Access to Newgrange begins at a visitors' center, from where you can take a guided tour of the site. The center hosts a re-enactment of the winter solstice at Newgrange through the use of electric lights situated within the tomb. A lottery is held annually for tickets to be allowed into the tomb during the actual event.

Newgrange.

The Great Mound at Knowth is the second of the three major passage tombs in the Boyne Valley. Built over 5,000 years ago, the mound is younger than Newgrange but older than Dowth. Knowth is similar in size to Newgrange.

The mound has two passages (unlike Newgrange, which has one), with entrances on the east and west sides. Recent scientific data says suggests Knowth had a lunar function when it came to ancient rituals.

Knowth is best known for its impressively large collection of stones carved with Neolithic art, which comprises a quarter of all known Neolithic art in Europe.

It is said that a noblewoman named Bua is buried at Knowth, and a “great hill” was built up over her, creating the Great Mound at Knowth.

You can access the Knowth site through a guided tour from the Brú na Bóinne Center.

Knowth.

The third passage tomb site in the Boyne Valley is Dowth, or the “Fairy Mound of Darkness” (sounds appealing, eh?). It is similar in size to Newgrange and Knowth, and like the two complexes, was built 5,000 years ago.

The Dowth mound has two small passages, both located on the western side. Like Newgrange, the southernmost passage of Dowth is aligned to the setting sun of the winter solstice.

Dowth is not included in the Brú na Bóinne Visitors Center tour, and you cannot enter inside the tomb, but you can directly access it (it’s a short way from the Slane to Drogheda road) and meander around the peaceful site.

Dowth.

Hill of Tara

The Hill of Tara , also in the Boyne Valley, is the ancient seat of power in Ireland and contains over 30 visible ancient monuments, including the Stone of Destiny and the Mound of the Hostages.

The Hill is said to be the actual seat of the High Kings of Celtic Ireland and the sacred dwelling place of the gods.

It is believed that St. Patrick went to Tara - the most powerful Celtic pagan site - in order to confront the religion of the Celtic pagans.

One of the most famous monuments at Tara, the Stone of Destiny, is known as the Lia Fáil. The stone, which is thought to be a symbol of fertility, once stood in front of the passage tomb at Tara, the Mound of the Hostages. High King legend says the Stone of Destiny would sing and roar in praise if it approved the inauguration of a worthy high king.

The megalithic passage tomb at Tara, the Mound of the Hostages, is the oldest monument of the site. Evidence of at least 200 individual cremations have been uncovered at the mound.

Engravings within the tomb are thought to represent the sun, moon or stars as religious symbols, and one of the stones may have been used as a prehistoric calendar.

Access to the Hill of Tara is free, but if you want to hear a bit more background on the site, take a guided tour through the visitor center.

Tara is now under threat due to the construction of the M3 highway. Protestors are hard at work to save Tara: the Hill of Tara was included in the World’s Monument Fund 2008 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites in the world, and there is a letter-writing campaign in the works in order to preserve the site.

13 Hill of Tara.

Hill of slane.

According to myth, the impressive Hill of Slane is the burial place of King Sláine, the king of the Fir Bolg (an ancient people of Ireland).

In more recent Christian history, the hill is also the site where Patrick lit the divine Paschal Fire in defiance of the pagan kings at Tara. Church ruins lie atop the hill, and the site remains a popular destination for Christians.

The Hill of Slane is accessible at all times, and there is no entry fee.

Stop 2: Loughcrew Oldcastle, Co Meath

Loughcrew, also called “The Storied Hills” or “Mountain of the Witch,” is one of Ireland’s major passage tomb sites (the others are Bru na Boinne, Carrowkeel, and Carrowmore), all believed to date back to around 3200 B.C. The site is made up of clusters of cairns (manmade, pyramid-like stone piles) around hills.

The winter solstice at Newgrange is well known, but the lesser-known Equinox illumination at sunrise occurs at Loughcrew. The backstone of the chamber is illuminated by a beam of light at sunrise on the Spring and autumn equinoxes.

The myth says that the monuments of Loughcrew were created by a witch flying overhead who dropped large stones from her apron.

Admission to the site is free, but be aware that the climb to Loughcrew is quite steep.

Stop 3: Navan Fort & The King’s Stables Armagh, Co Armagh

Navan Fort is a historical royal fortress on Killylea Road in Co Armagh. The ancient monument was a stronghold of the kings of Ulster around 700 B.C. The Fort was the center of King Conchobor mac Nessa and his Red Branch Knights.

Navan Fort is surrounded by a bank with a ditch inside, suggesting that it was a ceremonial, rather than defensive, site.

It is said that the great Irish mythical hero Cuchulainn spent much of his youth in Navan Fort before single-handedly facing the army of the mythical Queen Maeve.

The Fort was eventually abandoned, which probably was a result of the creation of St. Patrick’s church two miles away. But in 1005, the Irish king Brian Boru camped there, and in 1387, Niall O’Neill chose Navan Fort as the location for a house.

One mile west of Navan Fort lies another myth site, the mysterious King’s Stables which is thought to have played a role in water rituals in the area.

King's Stables, which was built around 1000 B.C, is a 10-foot-deep man-made pool surrounded by a bank. It is believed that its significance had to do with water, because the prehistoric Celts are known to have practiced water cult ceremonies.

A brief excavation of the site in 1975 uncovered the front of a human skull that was severed from the back part, perhaps related to another famous Celtic cult ritual – the severed head, a large-scale beheading as human sacrifice to the Celtic gods.

You can take a tour of the sites through the Navan Center.

Stop 4: Beaghmore Stones Cookstown, Co Tyrone

Stone circles in Ireland span across the Sperrins Mountains in Counties Tyrone, Derry and Fermanagh. In each area there is a concentration of sites made up of multiple stone circles. The circles have relatively small diameters and are comprised of 40 or so stones each.

The circles are typically misshapen and occur in pairs or multiples in one place.

Tyrone has the most stone circles; there are 61 known rings there. The most famous stone circle complex is at Beaghmore (“the moor of the birches”) in Co Tyrone. The complex was accidentally uncovered in the 1940s while men were peat cutting. It took four years of excavation to remove a thick layer of protective peat and to uncover the 1269 stones of the seven-circle complex.

Thus far, seven stone circles, 13 cairns and several rows of standing stones that make up the Beaghmore complex have been uncovered, but it is assumed that even more are still hidden in the surrounding peat.

It is believed that the stone circles date back to 1600 B.C., but field walls, fireplaces and flint tools discovered at the site suggest that it was in use since 2900 B.C.

It seems that the builders of the complex wanted to point the stone rows at the midwinter sunset, so some archaeologists believe that the circles were constructed to record the movements of the sun and moon in order to mark lunar and solar events.

Alternatively, the stone rows are thought by many to have been used for ancient rituals, either religious or social.

The Beaghmore Stones lie 10 miles west of Cookstown, and can be accessed for free at anytime.

Stop 5: Grianan Ailigh Letterkenny, Co Donegal

An Grianan Ailigh is a mysterious circular stone fort which is thought to date back to 1700 B.C. The fort sits on the hill of Grianan, 750 feet above sea level, so the views from the surrounding Donegal countryside are amazing.

According to myth, the fort was built 4,000 years ago by the god of the people called Tuatha De Danann in order to house the grave of his son. The fort then became the seat of the Kingdom of Ailigh, and was a center of culture and politics during the rule of early Irish chieftains.

The road that leads to Grianan Ailigh can be accessed from the main Letterkenny to Derry road.

13 Grianan Ailigh Letterkenny, Co. Donegal

Stop 6: carrowmore and carrowkeel co sligo.

Carrowmore & Carrowkeel are two megalithic sites in Co Sligo and once held over 200 tombs.

The two sites are joined by the Uinshin river, which flows from Lough Arrow to Ballisodare Bay – the main road during the Stone Age. This makes the Carrowmore/Carrowkeel area one of the most important centers of ancient mythological Ireland.

The location of the monuments, along with their breadth and majesty, shows the significance of the area, and the ancient Celtic people’s reverence for the dead.

The most extensive megalithic complex in Ireland, about 30 tombs can be viewed at the sacred lands of Carrowmore (though it is thought that up to 100 existed at one time).

The tombs are mostly “dolmen” circles, or a single tomb made of three or so upright stones supporting a large, flat, horizontal stone, surrounded by a circle of boulders. There is an average of 30-35 stones in each boulder circle, set side by side. Most circles are around 40 feet in diameter, but a few span up to 165 feet.

Carrowmore is classified alongside Newgrange and Loughcrew as part of the Irish Passage Tomb Tradition.

Within Carrowmore lies the Great Cairn of Knocknarea – also known as Queen Maeve’s Tomb.

The monument, 197 feet in diameter, was built about 6,000 years ago and is situated on the highest part of the flat top of Knocknarea mountain, 327 meters above the sea.

The cairn is one of the most impressive and well-preserved ancient monuments in all of Ireland, and stands in one of the most beautiful and visible locations of any passage tomb.

According to legend, the site is the resting place of Queen Maeve of Connaught in the Ulster cycle of Irish mythology, and an iconic Irish mythological warrior (this may help to explain why her tomb is so well preserved).

Queen Maeve is notorious for inciting the Tain Bo Culainge (“The Cattle Raid of Cooley”), where she led her province to war against Ulster to steal their prized bull.

Maeve’s choice to be buried on Knocknarea speaks volumes of its importance in Irish mythological history.

Carrowmore, Co. Sligo

Carrowmore, Co. Sligo

Carrowkeel, which lies atop the Bricklieve Mountains, is a collection of some of the most mysterious mounds in all Ireland. It is a lesser-known ancient site than Carrowmore, but is equally significant in Ireland’s mythical past and has one of the most beautiful locations of any megalithic site. Carrowkeel is the fourth major passage tomb cemetery in Ireland (the others being Newgrange, Loughcrew and Carrowmore).

Today, 14 passage tombs can be seen at Carrowkeel. One of the tombs is a “classic” Irish passage tomb – one that consists of a short passage you can crawl through, which leads to a central chamber with three equally spaced side chambers. What’s unique about the tomb is the roofbox above the entrance. The only other known roofbox exists at Newgrange, but while Newgrange is aligned to the Winter solstice, the Carrowkeel roofbox is aligned to the midsummer sunset, signaling two different types of rituals that must have taken place in the locations.

Both Carrowmore and Carrowkeel are very accessible from main roads in South Sligo.

Stop 7: The Rock of Cashel Cashel, Co Tipperary

Legend has it that the Devil took a bit out of a side of a mountain in North Tipperary – now known as the Devil’s Bit – and then spat out a rock, which landed at Cashel. That rock is now known as the Rock of Cashel.

The Rock was the traditional seat of the High Kings of Munster prior to the Norman invasion.

Numerous buildings are perched on the site, the majority of which date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, and today hold some of the most extraordinary collections of Celtic art in Europe.

The Rock of Cashel is also known as St. Patrick’s Rock because Cashel is the presumed site of the conversion of the King of Munster by St. Patrick in the 5th century.

The site has a small admission fee, and guided tours are available upon request.

Thank you to Bike Mourne ! I had the most beautiful day in County Down, Northern Ireland. Some of my group went by e-bike while I had a walking and photo tour. It has been featured in movies and TV shows like “Game of Thrones.” The picturesque landscapes and biking and walking trails take you by the park’s ancient trees, bridges, and cascading waterfalls.

Connie mikelait, mystical ireland - 8 days/7 nights-an amazing first trip to ireland.

Everything about this trip was better than expected. The bus was comfortable. The hotels were all 4 star. The food was delicious and we were able to eat some of our meals on our own. We loved our Tour Guide Brian and driver Brenden. They were so educational and entertaining. And very helpful when we had questions. The sites we visited were incredible. We especially loved the Titanic Museum, Giant's Causeway and the Cliffs of Moher. The sheep herding dogs were also a big hit! And the local city Tour Guides were amazing. They were eager to share their personal experiences and teach us the history of the area. I would recommend this experience to everyone!

Mary Katherine Blair

Kevin Bacon Glenn Howerton

Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton are joining the cast of the upcoming Netflix limited series “Sirens,” Variety has learned.

The pair join previously announced leads Julianne Moore, Milly Alcock, and Meghann Fahy in the dark comedy. Variety exclusively reported in February that the series was coming to Netflix. It hails from “Maid” creator Molly Smith Metzler and is based on her play “Elemeno Pea.”

Bacon will play Peter Kell who is said to come “from an old money family and is the highest-status person in every room he enters. He’s an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the occasional joint.”

Howerton will appear as Ethan Corbin II, “a dear friend of the Kells and lifelong bachelor who lives next door. He’s a regular at the yacht club and he’s rapidly burning through his trust fund,” per the character description.

Bacon is also set to star in the upcoming Amazon series “The Bondsman” from Blumhouse TV, while he previously played the title role in the Amazon comedy series “I Love Dick,” which aired for one season and earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Bacon’s other television roles include the Showtime series “City on a Hill” and “The Following” at Fox. He is best known for his film roles, such as his iconic performance in the film “Footloose,” as well as “Hollow Man,” “Mystic River,” “Apollo 13,” “Tremors,” “A Few Good Men” and many more.

He is repped by WME, MGMT Entertainment, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

Howerton is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Sloane Offer.

“Sirens” is the first project under Metzler’s multi-year overall deal with Netflix, which she signed following the breakout success of “Maid.” She serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on “Sirens” under her Quiet Coyote banner. Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Margot Robbie also executive produce for LuckyChap. Nicole Kassell will direct the first two episodes and also serve as executive producer.
