When he released Harry’s House in May 2022, Styles played through the album at his “One Night Only” show in New York , which included a second performance of the album’s lead single “As It Was” during the encore.

Harry Styles Variety Hitmakers

After 42 shows and nearly three months, for the final song of his continent-spanning “Love on Tour” tour, Harry Styles wanted just a little bit more.

“This is the last song of the entire tour,” Style said, raising his arms in the air, as he cut into the sexually provocative lyrics of the banger “Kiwi” at the new UBS Arena just outside New York City. “I’m going to need a little bit more. OK? We’re going to try that again. OK?”

And sure enough, on take two, there was more energy — from the mosh pit around the 360-degree stage all the way up to the nosebleed seats. “Much better!,” Styles said, addressing the 17,000 screaming fans in the brand-new arena. “20 percent more,” the 27-year-old British heartthrob demanded, “and we’re good to go.”

And he was: Styles closed out the show and the tour with a rendition of “Kiwi” that went on and on, even as the lyrics wound down. He blew kisses as he ran up and down the hockey-rink length of the stage — which featured two catwalks, allowing him to perform to basically everyone at different parts of the night. He caught bouquets of flowers. And he sprayed fans with so much water, those who’d shelled out for a premium standing room spots should have packed a poncho. (Obviously, he no longer does his former trademark move of spitting water at the crowd.)

He’d earned the long curtain call: After being postponed for months due to the pandemic, Styles was clearly reveling in the fun, and although the set wasn’t as full of surprises as his “Harryween” pair of Halloween-weekend dates at New York’s Madison Square Garden — where he covered “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” while dressed as Dorothy on one night and Britney Spears’ “Toxic” in a clown getup on the next — he roared through a powerful setlist heavy on songs from his 2019 album “Fine Line” along with a handful from his self-titled debut and his One Direction showcase, “What Makes You Beautiful.” And there was one nice tour-ending surprise for the die-hard fans: “Medicine,” a song debuted on his 2018 tour that was considered for “Fine Line” but ultimately not included, although he does perform it on occasion.

Popular on Variety

Throughout the night, Styles was clad in a gold vest that didn’t clasp — the audience caught many glimpses of the butterfly tattoo on his stomach — and he spent as much time dancing as he did singing, clocking more cardio in one night than most of us achieve in a week. During his song “Treat People With Kindness,” a fan tossed a LGBTQ+ Pride flag on the stage. Styles picked it up and ran up and down the auditorium, as he vigorously waved it in the air to deafening cheers.

Yet he also addressed the fact that, for many months, it was unclear when anyone would be able to launch a tour like this again.

“You have been so generous to me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Styles told the crowd between songs. “I really, really did not know if this tour would happen and I thank you for everything that you’ve done.”

The sense of occasion also extended to the building itself: This was the first concert at the UBS Arena, which sits beside the border of Queens and Nassau counties and opened its doors just two weeks ago.

“It’s an honor to be the very first show in this building,” Styles said earlier in the show, to a crowd that drew visitors from all across the Tri-State area. Not only does the venue add another major venue to the area — saving fans treks through daunting traffic to Manhattan or New Jersey — it’s a state of the art building, part of a $1 billion development, with vivid video screens and so many concessions stands that there was hardly a wait for food or drinks (although hundreds of girls patiently queued for a selfie with Harry’s “The Love Bus,” an activtion prop presented by American Express).

“After tonight,” Style said, “we’re going to go away for a little bit and we’re going to work on some stuff and then we’ll come back and see you very soon.”

The Harry Styles Show (and Some Music) Comes to New York

The first two nights of a 15-concert run at Madison Square Garden were heavy on charisma, banter and nods to the past.

live on tour harry

By Jon Caramanica and Lindsay Zoladz

Over the weekend, Harry Styles began a 15-night stand at Madison Square Garden, an impressive feat befitting one of the most popular musicians in the world. (He’ll begin a similar stretch in October at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. — his tour supporting his latest album, “Harry’s House,” consists of a series of residencies .) But Styles, who came to fame as part of the British boy band One Direction, is still relatively early in his solo career, and is still establishing his sonic ideas. Two New York Times critics attended the first two nights of his Love on Tour run in New York to see how he wielded his gravitational pull.

JON CARAMANICA I always liked One Direction , more or less. Or maybe I liked what the group represented: a rejection of the hyperprocessed boy band, and by extension an acknowledgment that doing the least can still earn you the most. They weren’t trying to delude audiences about their artistry — their casualness was foundational to their appeal. But that approach wears thin in a solo act, and time and again during the Harry Styles show at the Garden on Saturday night, I found myself vexed. Off-the-charts charisma, collective exuberance, decently competent band, and yet at the center of it all, Styles was inscrutable. Musically, at least. I’ve rarely if ever seen someone more confident in their ownership of the stage, but everything underneath felt slight. All razzle, no dazzle. What am I missing? (I’m not missing anything.)

LINDSAY ZOLADZ Hmm, Jon, maybe a boa? Despite all of the construction around Madison Square Garden, I had no difficulty finding the venue’s entrance: I just followed the trail of rainbow feathers shed from the signature Styles neckwear that at least half of the audience seemed to be sporting. My thoughts today (and over the next several weeks of Styles’s 15-date residency) are with the Garden’s cleanup crew.

I’ve long considered One Direction to be the quintessential boy band of the fan-service era — expertly primed to respond to the demands of their devoted, social-media savvy stan army — and after catching Styles’s show on Sunday night, I’m ready to declare him the defining solo artist of that era, too. I am not sure I’ve ever seen a pop star wave so much from the stage in my entire life? Roughly a third of his performance seemed to comprise waving, pointing and blowing kisses to various sections of the audience, whose volume approximated a jet taking off. Most of the time I could not hear Styles’s voice well enough to determine if he was hitting all the notes, though the crowd’s reaction was energetic enough that they did not seem to care. This show felt, as so much of Styles’s music does, first and foremost for the fans, which — I agree — can sometimes make the man at the center of it all feel like a bit of an enigma.

CARAMANICA Let’s try to distill the Harry Styles musical proposition. He has nowhere near the determined agita of, say, Shawn Mendes; nowhere near the vocal litheness of Justin Bieber. (Also:#FreeZayn) And it goes without saying that despite the rampant Eltonisms on display throughout Styles’s solo catalog, and the (sub?)conscious echoes of John’s sartorial glamour in Styles’s Gucci gear, he has nowhere near John’s verve or panache. It is all quite a brittle foundation upon which to build this fame skyscraper.

But yes, the waving. Also the utterly-at-ease shimmying. And that thing he did mid-show where he took a fan’s cellphone and tried calling her ex on it. (Josh, if you’re reading this, you got washed, buddy — everyone at Madison Square Garden hates you.) See also: him singing “Happy Birthday” to his friend Florence. Florence Welch, of the Machine ? No. Florence Pugh, his co-star in the upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling”? Also no. Florence, daughter of Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music Group? Yes.

This is the essence of his appeal — his is not a top-down sort of fame. He’s the approachable but protective friend, the one who leads with good judgment and progressive wholesomeness. (At previous shows, he’s helped people come out, or to confess their love.) That’s part of why, even though public discussion of Styles often centers on his dating life or the ways he flirts with gender fluidity, his actual show is conventional and chaste. The most risqué bit was when he explained how the in-the-round performance would work. Sometimes, “we’ll be ass to face,” he said. “I’ll be sure to distribute face and ass equally throughout the show — there’s plenty to go around.” It was cheeky. Even “Watermelon Sugar,” his lightly erotic hit, was dry.

ZOLADZ Styles did not call any exes at our show, but he did a funny bit where he attempted to count all of the “golf dads” in the audience — 34, apparently. He also broke some solemn “bad news” about something that had happened just before the show: “I’ve blown my tongue on some soup.” So yes, effortlessly charismatic banter, and he works every corner of the stage. The set and wardrobe were a bit more minimal than I anticipated; I expected at least one costume change. But I would describe the look he was going for, in a red-and-white-striped jumpsuit, as “sexy candy cane.” The fashion, the fans, the force of personality — it feels like we’re talking about everything but the music here, which is perhaps telling. How did the songs strike you, Jon, and did you get anything out of them that you don’t get on his records?

CARAMANICA Basically, we’re of opposite opinions on Styles’s albums — I’m more partial to the most recent one, “Harry’s House,” and I know you lean more toward the previous one, “Fine Line.” When the songs were … funkier — and I use that designation extremely loosely — his performance felt more full. I’m thinking “Satellite,” and also “Cinema,” both from the new album — the rhythm section is in the lead, but doesn’t overpower him. I also liked what he did with “Adore You,” melting the chorus into more of a restrained tease. But when he went unadorned, like on “Matilda,” the air in the room felt heavier. And “Sign of the Times,” the first Styles solo hit, was ponderous, a karaoke take on mid-1970s power-mope.

ZOLADZ I sometimes detect a divide between the music Styles wants to make — the big, bold, if somewhat generic-sounding ’70s-style rock of his first album — and the more pop-oriented fare that better suits his personality. Not surprisingly, the songs that worked best for me live were the ones that manage to satisfy both of those impulses, like the groovy, Tame Impala-esque “Daylight” or the still-ubiquitous hit “As It Was.” I wish he’d ended the set on that note, but regrettably he had one more song to play after that, the stomping, Led-Zeppelin-cosplay rocker “Kiwi,” an unfortunate live staple that I consider one of his weakest songs. But, as ever, he seemed to relish playing the role of bombastic rock star, even if the material itself didn’t always electrify.

I found it refreshing, though, that Styles is not shying away from his former group on this tour: The first song on his preperformance playlist is One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” — much to the shrieking delight of the thousands of fans who sang along to every word — and during his set he actually played a louder and more rock-oriented version of One Direction’s 2011 hit “What Makes You Beautiful,” which happens to be from an album that his former bandmate Louis Tomlinson recently called a disparaging word we can’t print here. How did you feel about Styles’s raucous 1D cover, Jon?

CARAMANICA That was one of the musical high points, if not the peak. It was as if a rowdy bar band momentarily inhabited Styles’s very deliberately understated crew. On Saturday, too, people absolutely lost it when the opening bars of “Best Song Ever” hit right after the conclusion of Blood Orange’s temperate and tasteful opening set. It was the purest release of pent-up demand that I’ve witnessed in quite some time. And that’s how the rest of the night went, too — demand leading supply. Fervor without feeling (and certainly without friction). An arena-size canvas merely doodled on with pencil.

And for the record, a friend lent me her pink-and-white boa for a few songs — it didn’t help.

While it's nothing new, and we're certainly not complaining, Harry Styles ' name is inescapable right now.

Not content with claiming 2022's Official biggest song with As It Was , even bagging the Official Charts Double as the year's biggest LP Harry's House simultaneously hit Number 1, making moves in the beauty business with Pleasing and sweeping up at the BRITs and GRAMMYs , the One Direction star's now preparing to treat fans across Europe to Love On Tour all over again.

Harry Styles' next Love On Tour concert is Merkur Spiel-Arena, Dusseldorf, Germany on June 27th and June 28th 2023.

Following the success of his Coachella sets and One Night Only performances everywhere from New York to Brixton last year, Harry's rescheduled European concerts kicked off on Saturday June 11 2022 at Glasgow's Ibrox Stadium.

If you're off to see Harry at his next date at Coventry Building Society Arena and want to know which songs you can expect, keep reading. He's even switched up the setlist especially for the European leg, adding a new 1D Four album fan favourite.

7 Iconic Live Harry Styles Moments

  • Copied to Clipboard

live on tour harry

To say Harry Styles ’ first solo tour had a few highlights is a bit of an understatement. There were floral Gucci bell-bottoms, there was bona fide Jagger swagger, there were even near-Olympian feats — who could forget that time Styles caught a gummy bear thrown from the crowd in his mouth? Fans received gift after gift from the former One Direction star as he ran his rock-heavy debut LP, 2017’s Harry Styles , around the globe. As the charismatic singer-songwriter readies a psychedelically inspired follow-up, Fine Line, we find ourselves reminiscing over the best bits from his 2017 to 2018 Live on Tour outing.

Harry Performs “Landslide” With Stevie Nicks

Throughout setlist reshufflings, Styles kept Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 “The Chain” in his encore, but those lucky enough to catch his warm-up gig at West Hollywood’s legendary Troubadour club were treated to something historic in its own right as Stevie Nicks performed three duets with Styles: his “Two Ghosts,” her “Leather & Lace,” and that other Mac classic, “Landslide.”

Harry “Covers” 1D’s “What Makes You Beautiful”

Directioners everywhere breathed a sigh of relief (after they were done screaming) when Styles deployed his former band’s biggest hit on the first night of his tour. It was a bold move for an artist in the midst of reinvention but Styles made it his own with a little grit and twang.

Harry Debuts Two New (Still Unreleased) Songs

Styles kicked off the 2018 European leg of Live on Tour by unveiling not one but two brand-new songs. While the chiming, shout-along “Anna” was more than welcome, it was the darkly surging “Medicine” that made headlines for a lyric appearing to embrace same-sex love.

Harry Rides Hard for Inclusion, the Whole Time

View this post on Instagram I’m Bi 🏳️‍🌈 ! This year I’ve really become proud of who I am and I’ve slowly been coming out to my friends over the past couple of months. Harry’s shows are an amazing environment where I have felt safe and accepted and last night Harry Styles himself helped me come out to my parents and it is something I will never ever forget. WEST COAST HAS MY HEART I LOVE EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO WAS WITH ME TO EXPERIENCE THIS ESPECIALLY @breannmayes AND @ella.rh Thank you endlessly @harrystyles “TINA SHE’S GAY” A post shared by Grace Hall-Ramsey (@lonelycanyon) on Jul 12, 2018 at 9:59am PDT

Sure, Styles sold merch that read “Treat People with Kindness,” and he often greeted crowds by saying something like, “Please feel free to be whoever you want to be in this room.” But one of the tour’s most memorable traditions was born at the tour kickoff in San Francisco, when a fan threw a pride flag on stage and Styles happily incorporated it into his set. That played out time and time again (with an array of flags representing oppressed peoples, in fact), creating a safe enough space that one California fan had Styles help her come out to her mom mid-gig.

Fans Repay Harry With an Arena-Sized Rainbow Flag

By the time Styles reached London’s 30,000-strong O2 Arena, fans had used social media to mobilize around a hugely special and especially huge project. As he sang the words to “Sweet Creature,” the crowd turned the massive space into one big rainbow, using cell phone lights and bits of colored paper to pay Styles back for accepting them as they are.

Harry and Kacey Musgraves Cover Shania Twain

The mighty Kacey Musgraves opened Styles’ North American arena dates, and she returned to the stage at Madison Square Garden to join him in a cover of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One,” a song that Styles introduced as “one of my personal favorites.” Their harmonies ring true as Styles strums, and kids in the crowd discover a love for ’90s country-pop.

Harry Belts Out “Kiwi” Three Times in a Row

Nearly a year after that Troubadour warm-up gig, Live on Tour made it full circle, back to Los Angeles for a grand finale at The Forum in Inglewood. And yet, Styles wasn’t ready for it to end. When he introduced “Kiwi” as “the last song of the night,” he wasn’t lying — but he wasn’t exactly being truthful, either. With his battle-tested band behind him, Styles danced, shouted, and sweat as he performed the rip-roaring single not one, not two, but three times in a row.

Wanted: Harry Styles experts to guide tours of star’s home village

Holmes Chapel to hold day of auditions for tour guides after thousands of fans make pilgrimage to Cheshire village

A Cheshire village that has been swamped by young visitors has appealed for tour guides with a very specific skill set: an expert knowledge of Harry Styles .

More than 5,000 fans – known as Harries – have descended on the quaint community of Holmes Chapel in the last year in a pop pilgrimage to the singer’s home town.

Some were said to be “risking life and limb” to visit the site of Styles’s first kiss, a railway viaduct near a notoriously busy main road, prompting villagers to publish a self-guided tour map last year.

Now local people have decided to go one step further. The Holmes Chapel Partnership, a community group, has announced that it is launching its own official tours and is looking for Styles superfans to lead them.

The demand for the coveted roles is expected to be so great that the village will host an audition day later this month, presumably in the style of The X Factor on which Styles rose to fame.

Peter Whiers, the group’s chair, said they hoped to hire Harries aged over 16, but that “more senior individuals may also apply”.

Whiers said the influx of Harries from across the world had led to a business boom in Holmes Chapel, including at the bakery where Styles worked part-time before finding fame with One Direction.

The store, W Mandeville’s, has a lifesize cardboard placard of their most famous ex-employee holding a white loaf – which, predictably, has become its bestselling item.

The tour will also take in Styles’s former schools, the terraced cottage where he grew up, and the nearby Chinese restaurant where he once took Taylor Swift.

But the biggest draw is Twemlow Viaduct, an otherwise unremarkable railway bridge where Styles reputedly had his first kiss.

The structure – known to fans as “Harry’s Wall” – is also where Styles scrawled his name during a biopic released in 2013.

Since then fans from as far afield as Australia, the US and Mexico have travelled to the usually muddy field in south Cheshire to write their name alongside their idol.

The Holmes Chapel Partnership warned last year that fans were “risking life and limb” by crossing a busy main road to get to Harry’s Wall, as they released a safety-approved map for intrepid visitors.

Whiers said they were expecting “significant” demand for the new tours, which are expected to begin in June and run until September. He added: “Even during the wet winter months, Harries have continued to visit, braving muddy banks and wet fields to pay homage at Harry’s Wall.”

Royal Family LIVE: Harry and Meghan handed brutal six-word warning ahead of next royal reunion

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex could be heading back to the UK in just a few weeks' time ahead of the Invictus Games anniversary, which means a Royal Family reunion might be on the cards

Prince Harry and Meghan

  • Updated 23:00, 14 Apr 2024

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be returning to the UK very soon, but they've been given a warning before they reunite with the Royal Family.

The Duke of Sussex has been open about his plans to return to the UK and it looks like they could be happening sooner than fans realised. Harry is expected to make a rare trip back to the UK next month for a special event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

The event will take place at St Paul's Cathedral on May 8. It's currently unclear if Meghan will join her husband at the event, but one royal expert has warned they "still have some way to go" before their joint UK return.

Meanwhile, troops applauded Edward, Duke of Kent , as he attended his final Black Sunday parade as Colonel of the Scots Guards before he handed the role to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Earlier today it was reported members of the Royal Family enjoy giving each other cheeky nicknames. One royal once gave away a rather unflattering three-word nickname they gave to Prince William - and ended up in "so much trouble". It came when Mike Tindall , the husband of King Charles' niece Zara Tindall let slip his moniker for the Prince of Wales.

Meghan Markle 'acted like a small child' with 'extreme' affectionate display at Netflix event

The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has been described as acting 'like a small child' while attending a recent Netflix shoot.

The former working royals met up with the Argentinian actor, his wife Delfina and their eight-year-old daughter Alba, who Harry and Meghan share close bonds with. Nacho, who's real name is Ignacio Figueras Bermejo, is also an Argentine polo player, sharing a love of the sport with Harry.

As the families embraced ahead of their Netflix filming, Meghan's relaxed body language showed the mother-of-two looking like "a small child wanting to be picked up" , according to body language expert Judi James.

Speaking to The Mirror , Judi explained Meghan's behaviour: "With Nacho's wife Delfina we can see extreme signals of tactile friendship. When Meghan approaches her to either greet or say her farewells she holds both arms out rigidly and full-length, like a small child asking to be picked up and cuddled."

She added: "When the two women walk together their arms are round each other and their heads lean in to touch in a gesture of mutual trust and closeness, while their smiles signal pleasure in each other's company."

Recap: Meghan Markle's brother Thomas Jnr blasted for trolling Duchess in series of vile online videos

In case you missed it, Meghan Markle's brother Thomas Jnr has been blasted for a series of vile Youtube videos about Meghan Markle.

The Duchess of Sussex has been targeted by Thomas Markle Jr with insults and bizarre conspiracy theories. Politicians and royal expert Jennie Bond have led calls for the web giant to take responsibility . Worse still, Thomas Markle Jr is profiting from the YouTube clips - as followers send him cash tips for the vile slurs about Prince Harry ’s wife.

Meghan and her brother have been embroiled in a family feud and not reportedly not spoken in more than a decade. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond led criticism of the web rants, which she called “grotesque”.

She added: “To have your own flesh and blood lead the assault must feel like the ultimate betrayal for Meghan.” As well as electronic payments from viewers, is believed Thomas Jr will also pocket advertising revenue from YouTube. On Friday, The Mirror reported the content to the US owned social media giant, which has strict policies designed to stop offensive speech.

Kate Middleton only carries four items in her handbag - including nifty tool

Kate, the Princess of Wales only has four items in her handbag - including something rather helpfuk.

Whilst Kate clearly pays a great deal of attention to the details of putting together her looks and coordinating her accessories with outfits, when it comes to what the royal keeps inside her bag - it's a much more practical affair. According to royal author Marcia Moody in her book Kate: A Biography, the Princess of Wales only carries four essential items when she's out and about on engagements - and they are all really practical.

The first is blotting paper, a nifty tool that helps you stay shine-free whilst you are on the go, and unable to cleanse any sweat or oil properly. Next up, is another essential that occupies pride of place in most handbags up and down the country - a compact mirror - which likely helps Kate keep up her reputation of never having a hair out of place, reports MamaMia . The third item that the Princess never reportedly goes without is another essential - the humble but mighty lip balm.

Finally, Kate always carries a handkerchief, ensuring that she isn't caught out by a rogue sneezing fit - and whether you go for a cloth handkerchief or a handy pack of disposable tissues, it's something most people have tucked away in their handbags.

Meghan and Harry 'return to their roots' with new ventures but there is one issue, says PR guru

In the view of one public relations guru, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have "returned to their roots" with their list of new ventures, with one issue also highlighted amid the Duchess' new podcast deal.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently unveiled their new upcoming Netflix projects. The Duke will be releasing a show focusing on polo, while the Duchess is set to release a show around cooking and gardening .

The Netflix announcements, amid the couple's multi-million-dollar deal with the streaming platform, come shortly after Meghan announced her new brand, American Riviera Orchard. And with these exciting projects on the horizon, it seems that the couple's rebrand is going swimmingly.

Speaking about the couple's rebrand exclusively to The Mirror , Lynn Carratt from Press Box PR gushed about the Sussexes' "passion projects" when she said: "Meghan and Harry have returned to their roots with their new ventures, both of which sound very much like passion projects."

She added: "They will be very mindful of the success needed for these TV shows particularly their $100 Netflix deal, which is set to expire in early 2025.

"To maintain their viewers' attention a garner popularity they need them to be a hits. The couple will either want their Netflix deal renewed or to find another deal, potentially with Paramount, but again it will also depend on the success of their TV ventures this year."

Exclusive: Meghan Markle caught in 'exaggerated' embrace with pal as she plays up to cameras in new snaps

Meghan Markle put on what was described as a "very exaggerated display" when embracing her close pal Delfina Blaquier - while filming for her latest Netflix project.

The Duchess of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry united with their close friends Nacho Figueras and his wife Delfina Blaquier in Palm Beach, Florida, to film for a Netflix shoot. The group were spotted taking part in a fundraising polo match for Harry's charity, Sentebale.

During the filming, Meghan was seen warmly embracing Delfina and chatting happily with Nacho. According to body language expert Judi James, the tactile displays from Meghan seemed "extreme" as she played up for the cameras.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror , Judi said: "It's such a useful coincidence that, just as Meghan is said to be promoting the subject of friendship for one of her Netflix series, she is here putting on a very exaggerated body language display of exactly that type of relationship.

"Meghan is known for her PDAs and tactile displays of warmth to both Harry and to various people she meets and supports with her causes but this is probably a new angle on her personal brand."

Meghan Markle suffers awkward moment as she asks woman to move away from Prince Harry

Meghan Markle had an awkward moment during the recent Sentebale polo tournament - where she asked a woman not to pose next to Prince Harry.

The couple were in attendance at the Sentebale Polo Cup, which is held annually in aid of Sentebale, the charity Harry co-founded in 2006. For the event, Harry captained the Royal Salute Sentebale Team against the Grand Champions Team, with his team winning triumphantly and Meghan presenting her husband with the trophy before they kissed in front of everyone at the event.

But in footage that has emerged since, it appears that Meghan requested a woman in a white dress to move to the middle of the group and away from her husband Prince Harry, so that Meghan could be next to her man. In a clip showing the awkward exchange circulating online, Harry kept his arm around Meghan while she spoke to the lady and seemingly insisted that she stand beside her husband for the photo opportunity.

Prince William's blunt three-word nickname let slip by royal

Members of the Royal Family may be laden with fancy names and grand titles - but it seems they love nothing better than giving each other cheeky nicknames.

One royal once gave away a rather unflattering three-word nickname they gave to Prince William - and ended up in "so much trouble". It came when Mike Tindall, the husband of King Charles' niece Zara Tindall let slip his moniker for the Prince of Wales.

Former rugby player Mike made the admission on a special podcast he recorded alongside Zara , with Rugby League legend Rob Burrow, who is living with Motor Neurone Disease. During the chat, Rob was keen to know if the pair have any nicknames for each other or for other members of the Royal Family, including William, Kate, King Charles or Queen Camilla.

Duke of Edinburgh takes on new role as incumbent stands down after five decades

The Duke of Edinburgh has taken on a new role as he was named the new Colonel of the Scots Guards at a ceremony today.

Troops applauded Edward, Duke of Kent, as he attended his final Black Sunday parade as before he handed the role to the Duke of Edinburgh. The 88-year-old cousin of the Queen was appointed to the position in 1974 after nearly two decades of military service, starting his career as a Second Lieutenant with the Royal Scots Greys in 1955.

He said: "Serving as Colonel of the Scots Guards since 1974, the longest anyone has spent in this role, has been a true honour and one which will forever fill me with great joy. Through those years, I have seen the work of the Scots Guards during peacetime and war and witnessed their bravery, selfless courage and devotion to duty.”

Day two at the Masters

It was a windy, gusty Friday at Augusta National for the second round of the Masters.

It's a three-way tie atop the leaderboard heading into the weekend with Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa all at 6-under-par.

DeChambeau, who was the 18-hole leader, shot a second-round 73. He is searching for his second major championship this weekend.

Scheffler shot even par in his second round. The 2022 Masters champion is also searching for his second major after victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship.

Then there's Homa, who continued his brilliant play after his first round Thursday was suspended due to darkness. After playing 23 holes Friday, Homa shot a second-round 71, putting himself in contention to win his first major.

Tiger Woods shot a second-round 72 and made a record 24th cut at the Masters. Woods also played 23 holes on Friday after completing his first round in the morning.

How Neal Shipley claimed Masters low amateur honors: ‘A little bit of grit’

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Neal Shipley wasn’t raised in a golf family. But he did grow up with a family that loved golf.

The Sunday afternoon of the 2004 PGA Championship was all it took for the Ohio State graduate student — the only amateur to make the cut at this week’s Masters — to fish his dad’s neglected golf clubs out of a closet and give this humbling game a lifelong shot.

“Me and my dad were on our couch,” Shipley said on Friday after finishing 36 holes at Augusta National in 3-over and making the cut by three shots. “And Vijay Singh won. The next day I took my dad’s golf clubs, which were dusty and probably never used, and started swinging around. I decided to get my own little set, and it took off from there.”

Shipley wasn’t just hooked, he was adamant. As an elementary schooler, he told anyone in his hometown of Mt. Lebanon, Penn. that he intended to become a professional golfer. In the second grade, he took his bag to school for “show and tell.” Shipley’s class ventured outdoors at recess to watch him launch drivers into the schoolyard. He was a regular at his local junior league. Shipley’s family eventually decided to join St. Clair Country Club, so he could properly hone his craft.

“We joined a country club so that he’d have a place to play,” says his father, also named Neal Shipley, “But we’re not country club people.”

Twenty years later, Shipley will play the weekend at the 88th Masters at a firm and fast Augusta National after being invited as the 2023 U.S. Amateur runner-up. He’s tied for 30th, hanging right in there with legends of the game, including 61-year-old Singh, who sits at 4-over, one stroke behind the 23-year-old on the leaderboard through 36 holes.

Round of the day: Ludvig Åberg

Åberg shoots second-round 69

(Photo: David Cannon / Getty Images)

Ludvig Åberg shot the round of the day Friday with a second-round 69.

The last player to have the round of the day at the Masters — no ties — in his Masters Tournament debut was Smylie Kaufman in 2016 (69 in round three).

History of world No. 1 holding 36-hole lead at Masters

Since the OWGR began in 1986, this will be the fourth time the reigning No. 1 has held the 36-hole lead at the Masters.

1996 Greg Norman — led by four (finished 2nd)

2020 Dustin Johnson — co-led (won)

2022 Scottie Scheffler — led by five (won)

2024 Scottie Scheffler — co-leader

A challenging scoring day at Augusta

Today (75.08) was the highest field scoring average in round two of The Masters since 2007, and just the fourth time in the last 30 years the field averaged higher than 75 in the second round.

Brody Miller

Who missed the cut?

The wind was punishing Friday, seemingly eliminating stars in a matter of seconds with one blowup hole being enough to derail a round. Double bogey became a common score to see, like reigning Open Champion Brian Harman (+9) finishing his first round Friday morning by going triple-bogey, double-bogey, double-bogey.

Maybe the most painful missed cut was Justin Thomas. The two-time major winner was even par with four holes to go, but he double-bogeyed 15 and 16, bogeyed 17 and double-bogeyed 18 to miss the cut by losing seven shots in four holes.

Viktor Hovland was one of the best players in the world six months ago, but his fascinating, strange struggles continue as Hovland went from 4-under early Thursday to shooting an 81 in round two to drop to 8-over and miss out on the weekend.

Others to miss the cut include three-time major winner Jordan Spieth (+9), Wyndham Clark (+7), Sam Burns (+9) and Dustin Johnson (+13).

Masters Round 2 takeaways: Scheffler, DeChambeau, Homa share 36-hole lead

Masters Round 2 takeaways: Scheffler, DeChambeau, Homa share 36-hole lead

LIV has 8 make the cut

DeChambeau is certainly doing most of the heavy lifting for the LIV field as he sits at 6-under for the co-lead, but LIV brought 13 golfers to the Masters and eight made the cut. It might not be looking like the same success as three golfers finishing top four last year, yet multiple players are still in the mix.

DataGolf gives DeChambeau a 23 percent chance of winning the Masters, while Cam Smith sits at 1-under par at the halfway point. Smith is one of the better players at Augusta, with four top-10s here in the last five years. Patrick Reed, another Masters expert who won the green jacket in 2018, is T16 at even par.

Other LIV golfers to make the cut include Brooks Koepka (+2), Tyrell Hatton (+2), Joaquin Niemann (+4), Phil Mickelson (+4) and Jon Rahm (+5). Rahm, the defending Masters champ, shot 76 in round two to take himself out of contention but still made the cut. Meanwhile, 2020 Masters champ Dustin Johnson missed out at 13-over.

DeChambeau in lead with new custom-made irons

One of the stories of the tournament has been not just DeChambeau’s impressive play — where he co-leads at 6-under par — but also his fascinating switch to a new set of custom-made, 3D-printed irons that were only approved by the USGA this week.

The approval was down to the wire, with DeChambeau receiving feedback last week they’d be non-conforming due to too sharp of groove edges. He didn’t receive full approval of the set made by a company called Avoda until early Tuesday morning. Despite the Masters being 48 hours away, he switched to them immediately and felt comfortable by the end of Wednesday. Thursday, he shot a first-round 65 for the solo lead.

“They have just got a different curvature on the face than other equipment,” Dechambeau explained. “Most equipment is flat. These have a different curvature on the face that allows me to have my mis-hits to go a little straighter sometimes.”

DeChambeau has had the idea for these irons since 2020, and when asked if he couldn’t find a manufacturer to make them he only said: “I’m not going to speak much more on that but I’ve had this idea for a long, long time.”

The set is one of a kind, with DeChambeu confirming there is no backup set. He said they’re holding up well, but if anything did happen to them he would switch back to his Ping i330s that he’s been using since July. It’s worth noting that since July, DeChambeau has had two LIV wins and four straight top-10s.

Scheffler shoots second-round 72

Scheffler tied for the lead

(Photo: Andrew Redington/Getty Images)

After a tricky day at Augusta National, Scottie Scheffler is atop the leaderboard at the Masters.

He shot a second-round 72 with three birdies and three bogeys.

Scheffler is in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa.

JT misses the cut

Justin Thomas will once again miss the cut at the Masters due to an abysmal back nine. The two-time major champion finished double-double-bogey-double to shoot a back nine 42, carding a 7-over 79 for his second round. Thomas suffered a very similar fate last year at Augusta National, when he came in with four bogeys and a double to miss the weekend, playing in a torrential downpour.

While many big names struggled on Friday afternoon on a firm, fast and brutally windy Augusta, Thomas's implosion feels particularly notable, especially in the wake of his recent split with his longtime caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay.

Thomas missed the cut in three of the four majors last season and hoped 2024 would serve as a sort of blank slate. So far, his PGA Tour results have shown signs of hope (he has four top-12s this season) but is Thomas still in the midst of his major championship slump?

Tiger compared to the field average

Woods beats field average

Tiger Woods beat the field average in each of the first two rounds. Today was the 80th time in his Masters career he's shot a score better than the field that day.

Highest percentage of rounds beating field in Masters history (min. 30 rounds):

Lloyd Mangrum, 81.7 percent

Tiger Woods, 81.6 percent

Ben Hogan, 79.6 percent

Hovland falls to 8-over-par

Viktor Hovland is now 8-over but he's still having a very good week because all golf clothing discourse is now solely about Jason Day/Malbon.

Max Homa is finally having his Masters breakthrough

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Max Homa walked up to the beginning of the most famous three holes in golf, alone, unconcerned with the legend behind him. Unconcerned with the surroundings or the stage.

Back on the 10th green, Tiger Woods and Jason Day took their time reading putts and finishing the hole. But Homa had his par. He had his co-lead at the Masters. So for a full two minutes, Homa walked ahead, up the hill to the start of Amen Corner.

This time was going to be different. This time, he was going to worry about himself.

He thought back to his journal scribblings from Thursday night, a habit he’s been focusing on the past year. He writes what he’s grateful for and mental goals for the day. And on Thursday night he wrote a simple mantra.

However good I am is however good I am.

Read more about Homa's second-round performance here .

Max Homa is finally having his Masters breakthrough

Rahm back-to-back birdies

Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, had a double bogey on the 14th hole.

That brought him to 6-over, below the cut line.

How did Rahm respond?

With back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16. His birdie on 16 was well below the hole on the green.

Rahm is 4-over-par and currently inside the cut line. Can he hang on to make the weekend?

Zach Johnson responds to apparent profanity toward patrons: 'That's laughable'

Zach Johnson responded to his apparent profanity toward patrons on the par-3 12th.

"That I swore at the patrons? That's laughable," Johnson said. "That's completely laughable. I can't hear the patrons, number one. Number two, I just made a triple bogey on the 12th hole that evidently is going to make me miss the cut, which at the time I knew was pretty sensitive in the sense that I needed to keep making pars.

"If I've said anything, which I'm not going to deny, especially if it's on camera, one, I apologize, and two, it was fully directed towards myself entirely because I can't hear anything behind me. Does that make sense?"

Scheffler bogeys 13 after finding water

Scottie Scheffler entered the 13th hole with a one-shot lead at the Masters. He left it in a three-way tie with Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau after putting an aggressive second shot into Rae's Creek. His nice chip from the drop gave him a chance to save par, but he just barely missed the putt to ultimately bogey the hole. Some might call it slight karma after Scheffler caught a lucky break on 13 yesterday.

He hit a similar approach that fell short in round one but that time it miraculously stayed up on the hill above the creek. He was able to chip up and still birdie the hole. Now, he enters the final five holes at even par for the round.

Tyrrell Hatton criticizes pace of play

Hatton calls out group in front's slow play

(Photo: Warren Little/Getty Images)

Englishman Tyrell Hatton criticized the pace of play in the group in front of him at the Masters on Friday, a group that included LIV teammate Patrick Reed in addition to Sungjae Im and Kurt Kitayama.

"Yeah, the lads in front have been so slow," Hatton said. "It's pretty poor from the officials that it took 32 holes to put them on the clock. Yesterday they'd lost a hole and a half, and then they weren't any better even this morning, and then for the second round they were just brutal. Fine for them; they're not waiting on any shot that they hit. But for us, we stood in the fairway, we stood on the tee. It was really hard to get a rhythm, so it was disappointing that it took 32 holes for an official to go, oh, we've put the group in front on the clock."

Hatton said he said something to a rules official on the eighth hole when his group had to wait to hit on 8 because the group ahead was still putting on the green. He said he knew that group was the culprit because the group two ahead was already teeing off on the 10th hole.

"It's a small field. It's not hard to really keep up with the group in front. I understand if you've had a tough hole, but when it's just like every hole, then it's a bit more frustrating."

DeChambeau shoots 73

DeChambeau 6-under-par

(Photo: Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

Bryson DeChambeau shoots a second-round 73.

An up and down back nine for DeChambeau who recorded three bogeys and two birdies.

He also had the content moment of the day when he carried a direction sign with his bare hand.

DeChambeau is currently at 6-under-par and tied with Max Homa.

Scottie Scheffler is the solo leader at 7-under-par.

Howling winds at Augusta

The winds are howling at Augusta National.

Gary Woodland's ball at the par-3 16th moved down the green from its original spot.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele had an extra wait at the par-4 11th.

A difficult conclusion to this second round ahead.
