As the price of fuel and therefore air travel increases, one way to cut down on costs is to avoid overweight fees by investing in some quality lightweight luggage. Whether you’re in the market for a carry-on, a checked bag, or an adventure-ready backpack, lightweight materials to look out for range from weather-resistant nylon or polyester to hard shells made out of polypropylene or polycarbonate. Lightweight luggage can vary hugely in price and features, with possible options including smart compression systems, integrated TSA-approved locks and weight indicators, and USB charge ports.

To help you find the perfect bag, we tested dozens of lightweight suitcases in the TripSavvy testing lab. We scored each for capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and value—and reviewed the results to choose winners for each category below.

Final Verdict

How we tested.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

Durable exterior

Handles well and converts smoothly

Modern style available in multiple hues

Limited interior organization

The Samsonite Freeform Carry-On Spinner was a clear winner for us, representing the next generation of lightweight suitcases while remaining surprisingly affordable. The streamlined shell is constructed of polypropylene, the lightest possible material for hardside suitcases , while the ridged design helps to deflect scuffs and scratches. Indeed, after our repeated drop and bat tests, it showed hardly any wear and tear—so much so that we would feel completely confident if we had to check it.

Samsonite claims this suitcase offers more space than other Samsonite carry-on models. We could fit everything on our packing list without using the expansion feature. We liked that there was a zippered pocket for delicates and a separate section for shoes or dirty laundry; however, we wished we didn't have to choose between the two. Compression straps help to keep your belongings secure during transit, while a TSA-approved lock allows security staff to open the suitcase without damaging it.

Finally, the bag's double spinner wheels afforded good maneuverability at various speeds. We felt it had the best glide of any suitcase we tested, and we particularly liked how easy it was to transition from two to four wheels or adjust the handle's height for better control. The suitcase comes in various colors, from sky blue to black, and has a limited 10-year warranty.

Dimensions: 21.25 x 15.25 x 10 inches | Weight: 6.5 pounds | Materials: Polypropylene

Best Budget

Amazon basics hardside spinner.

Minimal yet effective

Plenty of internal organization

Glides efficiently over uneven terrain

Few color choices

Retailing for roughly half the price of our overall winner (and even less than many of the other suitcases on this list), the Amazon Basics 21-inch Hardside Spinner is a worthy budget buy that exceeded our expectations on every single test. We loved the simple sleekness of its design, although colors are limited to black, navy blue, blue, or orange. The ABS hard plastic shell also features a scratch-resistant finish, which stood up well to our drop and bat tests with no visible damage.

We could fit everything in without using the expansion feature (which provides up to 15 percent more space). The interior is fully lined and includes compression straps, a divider, and three zippered pockets. Four double-spinner wheels give the suitcase 360-degree maneuverability, while the adjustable telescoping handle offers different heights. We found that the bag performed equally well over bumps, carpet, and around the kind of sharp turns one might expect in a crowded airport.

Dimensions: 22 x 14.9 x 10 inches | Weight: 6.3 pounds | Materials: ABS

Best Budget Backpack

Asenlin 40l travel backpack.

Integrated tech pouch

Spacious and well-designed

Easy to lift and load

Unremarkable aesthetic

If you’re looking for a convenient travel backpack that won’t break the bank, try the Asenlin 40L. Designed to adhere to airline carry-on size restrictions, it features water-resistant polyester Oxford cloth and survived our durability tests with no internal or external damage. The interior is roomy, with helpful compression straps and multiple packing cubes that allowed us to load everything with space left over.

We liked that there is a padded sleeve for a 17-inch laptop and that the side water bottle holder has a zippered expansion feature. There’s also a pocket on the front of the backpack for keeping your passport or wallet handy. We found the backpack comfortable and relatively lightweight even when packed full. In particular, we appreciated that there are multiple ways to carry it—including hooked over your suitcase trolley system or using the top and side grab handles.

Dimensions: 18.5 x 12.5 x 9 inches | Weight: 2.7 pounds | Materials: Polyester Oxford cloth

Best Checked

July checked bag.

Beautiful, unique design

Space-saving elements

Comfortable and adjustable handle

Light colors show scuffs

This 26-inch checked bag from July offers 80 liters of space protected by an aerospace-grade German polycarbonate shell. We loved that it felt strong but smooth at the same time and didn’t suffer any structural damage during our testing process. However, we found light colors marked easily and would only recommend purchasing darker versions of this suitcase. There are many to choose from, from moss green to magenta, with options for personalization as well.

The well-designed interior features several zippered pockets, a Y-strap compression system, and a secret laundry bag that’s both smell- and stain-resistant. We were able to pack all of the items on our prescribed list with ease. The suitcase includes July’s proprietary SilentMove wheels, which glide noiselessly over all surfaces. However, we found that it performed much better on hard floors than on carpet or gravel. With its ultra-soft grip and 20-plus height settings, the telescoping handle is a highlight—as is the included lifetime warranty.

Dimensions: 26 x 18.75 x 11 inches | Weight: 8.3 pounds | Materials: Polycarbonate

Best Backpack

Cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack.

Sturdy yet chic aesthetic

Well-organized interior

Various carry options

Relatively expensive for a backpack

Stylish, comfortable, and infinitely versatile, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack impressed our testers on many fronts. First, its rugged TPU-coated polyester and ballistic nylon construction survived our durability tests completely unscathed. Second, we loved that the main compartment opens suitcase-style, making it much more accessible than a conventional backpack. Although the pack is relatively unstructured, it has enough shape to allow neat packing and plenty of convenient, different-sized zippered pockets.

It also has a padded laptop and tablet sleeve, a top zippered pocket for stashing your essentials, and carabiner lash loops for attaching your coat. The weight-distributing harness system makes the backpack super comfortable (we especially loved how the straps contoured to the shape of our chest and shoulders). All straps tuck away, too, so you can use the reinforced grab handles on the top and side to carry it briefcase-style—a desirable feature whether you're looking for a carry-on for men or women. Finally, it comes in colors such as blue and amber with a contrasting rain cover.

Dimensions: 20 x 12 x 8 inches | Weight: 3.8 pounds | Materials: TPU-coated polyester

Best Underseat

Travelpro carry-on travel tote bag.

Durable, protective treatment

Impressive capacity

Compatible with other luggage

May be too large for some seats

Now that some airlines have started charging for overhead compartments, bags that can fit under the seat in front are becoming increasingly popular. Travelpro’s Maxlite 5 Soft Tote is a winner in this category (although it may not fit beneath the seats of some smaller airplanes). It features sturdy polyester with a water- and stain-resistant DuraGuard coating, high-tensile zippers, and a wipe-clean interior with an additive that protects it from moisture.

Despite the bag’s small size, we found it surprisingly spacious and could fit everything with space to spare. There’s a quick-access front flap and built-in pockets on the exterior for stowing last-minute items (although these are pretty small—think spare socks or toiletries). When transporting the tote, you can use the sturdy carry handles or the padded detachable shoulder strap, or slip the rear sleeve over the handle of your larger checked bag. Colors range from champagne to orchid.

Dimensions: 18 x 11 x 8 inches | Weight: 1.6 pounds | Materials: Polyester

Best for Adventure Travel

Patagonia black hole 40l duffel bag.

Long-lasting, weatherproof material

Convertible

Packs away into an interior pocket

Limited choice of colors

The ideal solution for those needing a bag that can go anywhere, anytime, and survive to tell the tale, the Patagonia Black Hole 40L Duffel is made for adventures. It features an extra-durable, 900-denier ripstop polyester exterior with a PU-coated lining for added water resistance. Stranded at your destination in rain or snow? Your belongings won’t suffer for it. The carry-on-sized bag with its padded base also emerged from our durability tests without a scratch or scuff.

We found it comfortable to carry duffel-style, with a Velcro flap holding the reinforced haul handles together. Using the removable padded shoulder straps, you can also wear it as a backpack. External storage includes a zippered side pocket and daisy chains, while the main compartment features a conveniently large opening, several pockets, and a large mesh lid pocket. We also loved that when you’re not using the bag, it collapses and stows neatly into one of its own pouches.

Dimensions: 21 x 13.7 x 10.6 inches | Weight: 2.05 pounds | Materials: Ripstop polyester

Best for Business Travel

Nomatic travel bag.

Rugged construction protects your belongings

Thoughtful storage solutions

Use as a duffel or a backpack

Would like to see improved shoulder straps

The 40L Nomatic Travel Bag offers an all-in-one solution for business travelers, converting from a duffel to a backpack in seconds using the patented strap. We liked that it comes with a detachable hip belt, but weren’t so keen on the shoulder straps, which we felt could have been more comfortable. Nevertheless, the waterproof tarpaulin material stood up to durability tests well, and the bag received top marks for its interior and exterior organization—including designated pockets for just about everything.

These range from a water bottle pocket to an RFID-blocking pocket, a separate laundry bag, and two ventilated shoe compartments. There’s a water-resistant pocket for your toiletries, and perhaps most usefully, a TSA-ready laptop sleeve that allows you to keep your computer in your bag through security. We found the main compartment spacious and loved how the structure made packing easy and kept folded clothes neat. The bag is carry-on compatible and comes in just one color—timeless, professional black.

Dimensions: 21 x 14 x 9 inches | Weight: 4.05 pounds | Materials: Not listed

We enthusiastically recommend the Samsonite Freeform Carry-on Spinner . It scored top marks in our durability and maneuverability tests and easily fit everything we needed to pack. If you are looking to maximize value and performance, the AmazonBasics 21-inch Hardside Spinner is a great find.

We used a similar testing process for checked and carry-on luggage —the only difference was that we tested carry-on luggage to see how it fit in an overhead compartment and packed with enough clothing and other travel items to simulate a four-day sightseeing trip rather than the seven days stipulated for checked luggage. First, we weighed the luggage to check the accuracy of the manufacturer’s specifications. Then we packed our prescribed list of items, noting how easily everything fit and how effective the bag’s organization options were.

Next (where relevant), we tested maneuverability on two and four wheels at different speeds and over various terrains, including concrete, carpet, and gravel. Afterward, we wheeled luggage through an obstacle course of bumps and turns meant to simulate a busy station or airport. Finally, we tested each product’s durability by pushing it from the top of a shelving unit and beating it with a baseball bat. Both tests were repeated multiple times to target different potential weak spots. We scored bags for capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and value.

What to Look For in Lightweight Luggage

Although design and features play their part, the material is one of the most significant factors affecting the weight of your luggage. Polyester and nylon are typically the two lightest choices if you prefer softside suitcases. For hardside suitcases, polycarbonate, ABS, and polypropylene are popular, with polypropylene being the lightest option. Consider the materials used to make your bag’s trolley system, too, if it has one. Aircraft-grade aluminum is a good option since it’s durable and lightweight.

Portability

Several luggage designs shave off the pounds by ditching the trolley system (wheels and handle) entirely. Wheel-less bags are a great choice when lightness is your top priority—but you still need to be able to transport them comfortably from A to B. Ways to do this include sturdy, cushioned carry handles; backpack straps and hip belts; or adjustable crossbody strap for slinging the bag over your shoulder. The best designs often allow you to switch between these carry methods as required.

Lightness was often synonymous with poor quality in the past, but fortunately, that’s no longer true. Hardside materials such as polypropylene and polycarbonate are stronger than ever, while polyester and nylon come in ripstop versions that are scratch- and tear-proof. Things to look out for include reinforced high-wear areas and abrasion- and weather-resistant coatings (for softside bags), and scratch-resistant finishes, texturing, and armored corner guards (for hardside bags). Quality wheels, zippers, and handles are also important.

Some bags keep things light with a simple design and few additional features. Others come with a range of extras that you may find worth the extra weight and expense. Things to consider include organization—will you have enough pockets, compression straps, or dividers? A telescoping handle makes maneuvering a wheeled suitcase more comfortable while switching between duffel handles and backpack straps might make life easier when choosing a wheel-less bag. Other extras range from TSA-approved locks to USB charge ports.

Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines before cleaning your luggage. However, as a general rule, you can spot-clean most interior linings and use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away superficial stains, scuffs, and dirt from the exterior. You can also protect your luggage from getting dirty in the first place by investing in a PVC luggage cover or having it plastic-wrapped at the airport. Luggage should be completely dry before being put away and stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

If you want a softside suitcase, the lightest luggage materials are polyester and nylon. If you’re a hardside fan, look for suitcases made of polypropylene, polycarbonate, or ABS (in that order). The design of the bag makes a difference too. Trolley handles and spinner wheels are convenient but add quite a bit of weight, so if lightness is your top priority, consider ditching them in favor of a duffel or backpack that relies on over-the-shoulder or crossbody straps instead. And, of course, size matters, so opt for a carry-on over a checked bag if possible.

Not necessarily. Extensive research has gone into making luggage materials simultaneously lighter and stronger—for example, a polycarbonate suitcase shell may feel thin (and therefore flimsy), but actually, it has been specially developed to flex upon impact and bounce back into shape to prevent cracks or dents. As long as you choose a product from a respected brand that uses quality materials and has consistently good customer reviews, you should be able to find a bag that’s as durable as it is light.

But above all, experts recommend prioritizing lightweight options so that you can scoot through airports and bus stations with ease.

We spoke with travel experts to find the best lightweight luggage on the market. We also consulted Select staffers about their favorite options.

  • Weight : Every piece of luggage on our list weighs less than 11 pounds, which our experts consider ‘lightweight.’

Away The Everywhere Bag

The Everywhere Bag, which can store a 15-inch laptop, a weekend’s worth of garments and small accessories like travel snacks, is a favorite of luxury travel advisor, Sally Nguyen for its multiple interior pockets. The water-resistant bag also has a trolley sleeve that makes it easy to put it over your carry-on suitcase, and a wraparound zip opening, so you can quickly unzip the main compartment according to Nguyen. The zippers are lockable too, and the bag is customizable with your initials for an additional $35 fee. If you’re looking for more storage, pick the medium or large Everywhere Bag .

Rimowa Essential Check-In L

This large, checked luggage option has a polycarbonate exterior, an adjustable handle and an interior flex-divider, which can hold your belongings in place while you travel, according to the brand. It’s a favorite of travel journalist and writer Rana Good for its hard-shell build. Apart from the occasional scratch, her suitcase had no visible dents even after months of constant travel, according to Good.

It can hold up to 10 days of clothing, according to Rimowa, and comes with a leather tag included — so you won’t have trouble finding your suitcase at baggage claim. The bag has TSA-approved locks, spinner wheels for steering and zippered compartments for organization too. Additionally, its interior compartment also has a compression system, which can let you add any last-minute travel items to your bag, without making your suitcase bulky, according to our experts. And, while this is the largest option on our list, it still weighs only 10.6 pounds. Rimowa also offers some of the best customer service, according to Good, including hotel repairs on your luggage at participating locations.

Away The Carry-On Flex

Away also makes Nguyen's favorite carry-on suitcase, which she says can easily hold all her garments on long-haul trips. “I can fit two weeks' worth of clothes in it and still have extra room in it to bring extra souvenirs home from my trips,” she says. The nearly 9-pound bag has a TSA combination lock, 360-degree spinner wheels and interior compression belts to hold your clothes in place. It even has a zipper expansion that adds 2.25 inches of packing space and a hidden handle by its wheels to make it easier to lift it off baggage belts, according to the brand.

Delsey Chatelet Air Checked Luggage

I own this checked bag and love its durable zippers — even after years of overpacking my bag on trips to India, they haven’t frayed or broken off. I also appreciate that both the interior compartments have compression straps — my clothes and makeup remain unscathed even after long-haul flights. The bag comes with a removable hanger, laundry bag and shoe bag to keep things organized. Plus, its TSA-approved combination lock keeps your items safe, while the spinner wheels and retractable handle make it a breeze to drag it through the airport. Each Delsey bag also comes with a unique tracking plate and code, which helps the brand monitor your bag in the off chance it gets lost during travel.

Ginsberg has been using her carry-on bag for over eight years and says it’s still in pristine condition. You can expand this carry-on suitcase by simply pressing a button and pulling the sides up, according to the brand. It also has a built-in garment holder, allowing you to store a suit or two to prevent wrinkles on long journeys. There are two mesh lid pockets as well, so you can store any last-minute snacks, documents or devices. If you want to personalize this suitcase, you can also add your initials at no extra cost.

How to shop for the best lightweight luggage

We consulted experts about what features to consider when shopping. They recommend keeping the following in mind:

  • Material: This can affect the weight and durability of your suitcase. Both Good and Nguyen prefer hard shell luggage as it’s more scratch-resistant and durable than soft shell luggage. Kathleen Westerhout , senior director of product at Monos , also agrees. Polycarbonate is the most common form of hardshell luggage, according to our experts. “Polycarbonate is the best balance of weight and durability,” she says. “While soft shell suitcases are generally a little lighter, a hard polycarbonate case provides much better protection.”
  • 360-degree spinner wheels: Opt for luggage with wheels that can move in any direction since they’re easy to maneuver, according to Nguyen. This is especially important when you’re rushing at the airport and need your carry-on to keep up with you. When trying out suitcases, “specifically, focus on how the wheels roll over different surfaces,” says Ulliyada Bopanna , vice president of design and innovation at Samsonite North America.
  • Handles: Handles factor into the overall weight of the bag as well, so choosing a handle made from lightweight material is important, according to Bopanna. “Materials like lightweight aluminum or high-grade plastics are commonly used to ensure functionality and durability while minimizing weight,” he says. Additionally, retractable handles that glide smoothly when you adjust them are a must for any luggage, according to our experts. A wide handle or a grippy handle also makes it easier to drag your suitcase around.
  • Zippers: A strong zipper that’s durable, can help your luggage last longer, according to our experts. “Metal zippers are considered the most durable, but these tend to be heavier and more expensive, so they’re less prevalent in luggage,” says Bopanna. Our experts also agree that Nylon coil zippers are the next most reliable. “Nylon coil zippers hold up well both on the inside and outside of luggage and bends easily around corners,” says Westerhout.
  • TSA-approved Locks: This is important especially for checked-in luggage as it keeps your belongings safe and saves you the trouble of buying an additional lock for your suitcase, according to our experts

A briefcase offers a practical and stylish way to carry your laptop, files, notebooks, and other essentials with you on your daily commute. Some are spacious enough to carry extra items you might need for a night or 2 away, while others are lightweight and versatile enough to be used on a daily basis.

Available in a wide range of styles, colors, and designs, finding the right briefcase to suit your needs doesn’t have to feel like a chore.

Before you buy your next briefcase, consider the following:

Size and Capacity

Travel Briefcase

If you are planning on using your briefcase for school, college, or work, you will need to be able to fit your laptop , work files, textbooks, and other must-have work essentials in with ease.

Depending on the size of your laptop, the padded compartment will need to be able to accommodate it , so be sure to carefully read the description before you buy. You should also be sure that it can fit full-size folders or documents if you intend to use it while working.

Hot Tip: Some briefcases offer the ability to expand a few extra inches, giving you extra interior space to store your files or fit a change of clothing in.

Travel Briefcase Compartments

If your briefcase is simply for carrying your laptop to work and back, it just needs to offer excellent protection and space for a few extra essentials.

However, if you are headed away on a business trip or need to carry your gym gear, lunch bag, and other day-to-day items, look for a briefcase that offers expandable compartments or extra space to ensure that you don’t need to carry extra bags with you.

Briefcases often feature a structured design, which can make them heavier than a comparable tote or duffel bag. While this won’t be so noticeable while the bag is empty, briefcases can feel quite heavy when fully loaded.

Material and Durability

Travel briefcase material

Briefcases are usually made from heavy-duty material as they are designed to offer increased protection. Polyester, canvas, leather, and vegan leather (PU) are all popular choices, and all have their own distinct advantages.

Suppose you are doing a lot of traveling with your briefcase. In that case, you may want to look for materials that offer some resistance to water and always check that the hardware and zippers are high-quality to ensure that they stay stronger for longer.

While your working life may be stressful, there is no reason that your briefcase should put any additional stress on your body. On the contrary, ergonomic shoulder straps can help distribute your belongings’ weight , and wheeled briefcases can make light work of longer journeys.

Also, consider how you access your belongings. For example, front flap pockets make it easy to grab your passport, cell phone, and other essentials in a hurry, and wide-mouth zippers ensure that you can easily slip your laptop and files in without a fight.

Wheels vs. No Wheels

Travel Briefcase Wheels

Some briefcases come with wheels and a telescoping handle, making it easy to pull your belongings along beside you.

These types of suitcases are great if you need to carry lots of files and documents with you and can also be used as a carry-on when flying.

Bottom Line: Wheeled briefcases can be super useful and will make it much more comfortable to carry lots of gear, but they are generally larger and heavier than a regular briefcase, so only buy one if you need the extra capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a suitcase and a briefcase.

Business professionals typically use a briefcase to hold documents, whereas a suitcase is larger and used to hold clothes and toiletries.

Are briefcases bad for your back?

Briefcases could be bad for your back, but only if they are too heavy. Briefcases are usually carried in one hand or over your shoulder using a strap, which means that the weight is not evenly distributed. If your briefcase is lightweight and not full, you should be able to carry it without any back issues.

Do people still use hard briefcases?

The use of hard briefcases has been on a hard decline over the last couple of decades as they have fallen out of fashion. However, soft briefcases are still widely used and both a practical and stylish option for business professionals.

Can you put a laptop in a briefcase?

A lot of modern-day briefcases will have a dedicated laptop compartment. Most will comfortably fit a 15-inch laptop, but some have been designed to accommodate a 17-inch laptop.

Amazon Basics 21-Inch Hardside Spinner : Best Budget Lightweight Luggage

AmazonBasics 21-Inch Hardside Spinner

A favorite among budget-conscious travelers, Amazon Basics’ 21-Inch Hardside Spinner offers a ton of value at a lower price point.

Let’s be honest, Amazon is one of the first places any budget shopper looks for cheaper suitcases, and although sometimes the products aren’t as high-quality as other luggage brands , I will say their Softside bag is a winner in the travel community.

The AmazonBasics 21-Inch Hardside Spinner is lighter than most hard-shell luggage and can squeeze into some spaces that hard shells can’t, much like a duffel bag .

This luggage also comes with four double spinner wheels that use a double “tire” construction that offer a streamlined, buttery ride on the go. Plus, these multi-directional wheels also reduce the amount of strain on your shoulders and arms, so you can bid those painful trips to the airport goodbye.

This carry-on is highly expandable and can stretch up to 25 percent, giving you the extra storage space you need, and more. It also features a large exterior pocket that can easily house bigger items like a laptop or other items you may need quick access to. Inside, the luggage contains a 150D-polyester interior organizer with three zippered pockets that aid in storing smaller items.

When packed, this bag does tend to topple, so it’s best to load their heavier items at the bottom when packing to prevent this. It also comes with a basic telescopic handle, which does not offer any adjustability other than the preset height. This means that you will need to be careful before purchasing to make sure it’s the right height for you.

July Carry-On Light : Best Lightweight Carry-On Suitcase

July Carry-On Light Clay

At just 3.9 lbs, July’s Carry-On Light prides itself on being the lightest double-wheel suitcase on the market. This is definitely my favorite lightweight carry-on luggage, as it hits all of my preference boxes: it’s super lightweight, has smooth 360-degree double spinner wheels, 32L of packing capacity, and a stylish exterior.

All of the materials used to craft this ultra lightweight luggage—the German polycarbonate shell, YKK Zippers, water-resistant and stain-proof nylon lining, PVC hinges and trimmings, and wheels—are vegan friendly and extremely high-quality. As one of the lightest carry-on bags on the market, you may expect the materials to be flimsier, but they really do pass the durability test.

Quality wheels are a non-negotiable for me when searching for lightweight carry-on luggage. Wheels typically weigh down luggage, so when I heard that July claimed to have the lightest double-wheel suitcase, I was interested to learn more.

July luggage has SilentMove Series 2 double spinner wheels that are covered under their extensive lifetime warranty. They glide seamlessly, prevent loud rolling noise, and weigh next to nothing—a rarity for double spinner wheels.

If you’re looking for one of the lightest suitcases out there that will fit all your belongings for a weekend trip in a piece of carry-on luggage, I highly recommend July. As far as carry-on luggage goes, this is the lightest one that still maintains its packing capacity, durability, and design.

Monos Carry-On and Check-In Set : Best Lightweight Luggage Set

Monos Check-In Medium

A luggage set from Monos is a great option if you’re looking for both a carry-on bag and lightweight checked luggage that provide similar features and a stylish look.

Luggage sets are especially handy for international travel—having carry-on luggage for those items you need easily accessible and lightweight checked luggage with extra space for bulkier items.

These bags offer a sleek, simple design that carries over to each of their different sizes. They have several carry-ons and checked bags that you can mix and match to create the perfect lightweight luggage sets.

Offered in 10 beautiful colors, everyone can find a monochrome or mix-and-match set that fits their aesthetic. Both bags also have four double spinner wheels that are super lightweight.

The Monos Carry-On Pro is outfitted with a hard-side front zipper pocket that can fit a 15” laptop—something I’m always having to squeeze in my backpack at the last minute! I love this feature because I often use my laptop to work while waiting in the airport or on the flight.

The unbreakable polycarbonate shell, telescopic handle, built in TSA lock, and quiet, sturdy wheels compare to most of the other major lightweight luggage brands in the market today. These features seem to be new must-haves for travelers!

Their Check-In Medium bag is the perfect partner to bring along on your adventures. Not only do they match their smaller bags perfectly, but you can even nest the Carry-Ons inside of the Check-In bags for easy, compact storage.

With all the same great features as the Carry-On, minus the front zip pocket, this checked luggage makes for a great addition on those longer trips where you need a bit more packing space. It is also one of the most lightweight suitcases when it comes to checked luggage !

Pairing these two bags makes one of the best lightweight suitcase sets on the market! Monos isn’t the most affordable option, though. Check out this list of cheap luggage sets for more options.

Away The Carry-On : Lightweight Luggage with the Best Warranty

Away The Carry-On

Away is an extremely popular up-and-coming luggage brand. The Carry-On is Away’s best-selling model, following minimalist and clean design cues with smart features and thoughtful organization

Made with 100% polycarbonate, it’s no wonder that The Carry-On is extremely strong, flexible, yet lightweight––qualities that have become the gold standard for all hard-side luggage to achieve.

Away really shines when it comes to their warranty. Their lifetime warranty covers any damage sustained to the shell, spinner wheels, handles, zippers, tie down straps, and many other functional elements of the luggage.

I actually had a cross-country move to NYC last summer, and when I shipped one of my Away bags in the mail, the shell ended up cracking (thanks FedEx). I emailed Away and they replaced my bag with a brand new one in just a few days!

The luggage features a fully lined interior with a robust design that keeps your things organized without overcomplicating matters or clogging up valuable space. The main compartment contains a deep pocket covered by a full-zip divider, which makes it good for bulkier items; the other side contains a detachable, buckle-down compression system that wrings out every last space in the 39.8 L bag.

It also comes with a larger zip pocket that’s fitted with extra padding, making it the perfect space for your delicate electronics. The bag is even equipped with a TSA-approved combination lock (I use this every time I travel to ensure my belongings are safe)!

This carry-on bag also comes with YKK zippers and four double Hinomoto spinner wheels, giving a luxurious finish to the luggage. This allows it to glide effortlessly on smooth pavements, rocky roads, hardwood, and grass!

It is also available in a battery model, which includes a removable, rechargeable lithium-ion TSA-approved battery to charge your devices on the go. You will no longer be tied down to charging ports and sitting on the floor, as you can always have easy access to power.

Calpak Ambeur Carry On : Best Lightweight Hard-Sided Luggage

Calpak Ambeur Carry-On

The Calpak Ambeur line offers quality hard-sided luggage at a stellar value. The best-selling Ambeur Carry-On Luggage is a sleek and modern-looking hard-side suitcase that makes it a dream to bring along at the airport.

Fitted with an adjustable telescopic handle, the luggage is easily tailored to your ideal height, so that you’re able to move around with ease. The luggage’s interior has several compartments that enable you to pack things on both sides of the carry-on. The well-made elastic cross straps and zippered pockets allow for a comfortable and efficient packing process in the main compartment.

This is one of the lightest suitcases out there, and it even features expandable storage up to two inches, which comes in handy when you want to cram in last-minute souvenirs without any worry. Lastly, the bag contains a removable mesh accessory pocket which enables you to access all your belongings easily.

With hard-side luggage, it’s important to ensure it will fit in any overhead compartment, and the Ambeur Carry-On fits the bill, even with the extra 2 inches of expandable storage.

Though a small selection, the colors the Ambeur line does come in are gorgeous! It is protected against scratches and fades, thanks to its durable polycarbonate hard sides, so the color will last.

This also means you don’t have to worry about scratching up your carry-on when stuffing it in the overhead bins with other luggage! It also has a limited warranty of one to two years which only covers defects in workmanship and material.

Briggs & Riley Torq : Most Durable Lightweight Suitcase

Briggs & Riley TORQ

Briggs & Riley began in New York, the travel mecca of the U.S., with the promise of revolutionizing the luggage market.

Their Torq Collection of hard-side luggage is the ultimate powerhouse, with a scratch-proof case and a versatile handle system made with aircraft-grade aluminum. The bag is made from three strong layers of top-quality Makrolon polycarbonate, the toughest thermo-plastic in the world.

Inside, there are compartments and accessory pockets to make organization simple. The main compartment holder contains enough for a week-long trip, a zippered mesh pocket to keep excess garments, and an additional folder to keep your business suits wrinkle-free.

The luggage also features a host of exterior zippered pockets for easy access to your important items like passports and laptops. These pockets are fitted with popular YKK zippers, which are known to be one of the strongest and most expensive zippers for high-end luxury.

Do note that if any of the zipper heads for Briggs & Riley bags break, you can replace them easily by using a pen to remove them from the zip, and claiming warranty under Briggs & Riley’s insurance. Briggs & Riley’s ‘Simple as that’ lifetime warranty covers everything from workmanship defects to airline damage.

Victorinox Connex : Best Lightweight Soft-Shell Luggage

Victorinox Connex Medium Softside Case

Victorinox’s Connex Medium Softside Case is a great soft-shell luggage option for those who want a reliable and spacious bag. The outer material is made out of extremely durable nylon that will easily withstand airport baggage processing (we’ve all seen how careless the airlines can be with throwing bags around)!

The Connex Medium Softside offers a spacious main compartment that can expand 1.6 inches. Its expandability affords it great utility, particularly for those who may pick up unexpected extra baggage on their travels and need the storage to hold it all.

Additionally, there are elastic tie-down straps that will keep the bulk in your luggage secure and tight, along with zippered dividers and pockets. It also has a zippered front pocket for easy access to items that you may need to get out in a hurry. No one likes to unpack their entire luggage just to get their passport.

The Victorinox Connex Medium Softside Case also comes with 2.4-inch dual caster Hinomoto smooth rolling wheels. They are built to be silent and durable and will allow you to glide through the airport without much effort. All zippers are also manufactured by YKK, a renowned zipper brand.

Following what Victorinox is most famous for, this luggage also features a multi-tool that has all the things a traveler may need: TSA-approved locks, a SIM card replacement tool, an ID tag, and a pen for any emergencies.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Rolling Underseat Bag : Best Underseat Lightweight Bag

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Rolling Underseat Bag

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 product line is fantastic for lightweight performance and bang for your buck. That’s why this is the second Maxlite 5 product to make this list.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Rolling Underseat Bag is a budget-friendly and durable competitor to other small bags on the market.

The best part about this underseat bag is that it’s the perfect width to fit in between the narrow aisles of airlines, under the seat, and other tight spaces. It stands at 17.5” x 14.5” x 8.5” inches and weighs 5.5 pounds.

Made entirely out of post-consumer recycled plastic bottles and recycled fabrics, the Eco Advance’s ripstop fabric and reinforced stitching give it a ton of durability. The bag comes with wheels that are specifically designed to reduce frictional resistance, giving it a light, airy feel.

It also comes fitted with a retractable handle that provides easy maneuverability for all users. Once the handle is fully extended, it locks into place and doesn’t flop around.

Its interior is spacious and compartmentalized, allowing you to sort your electronics and other items neatly. There’s even a padded laptop compartment that’s easily accessible for pulling out your device for security.

Lipault is a French company that focuses on bringing Parisian style, color, and flair to the luggage industry. Despite being a relative newcomer to the market, Lipault has not stopped at stealing the hearts of travelers.

The Lipault Plume Cabin Spinner is designed and colored with the Parisian runways in mind, aiming to give that chic and effortless look. This carry-on luggage keeps things stylish with its nylon twill exterior, which gives it an air of soft modern luxury.

This PVC reinforced nylon material gives this carry-on a robust and waterproof exterior, allowing it to withstand rough handling and weather wherever you are. It also comes with soft padded handles to allow for a comfortable experience.

This luggage has buttery smooth 360-degree spinner wheels that allow it to move easily and in all directions on the majority of surfaces. It also does not tip over easily thanks to the weight distribution design. Lastly, it comes in many different colors for those who like a slight personal touch to their bags (guilty).

The Lipault Plume Cabin Spinner’s biggest downside is its packing space and organization. The main compartment does not have as much space as would be expected for its size, and the compression straps are not the best for squeezing things down and holding them in place. This carry-on also does not have many pockets or dividers, which can make packing a little less organized.

Additionally, the interior pockets on the side and front are often found to be too thin to fit a lot of items inside, even laptops. This makes the Lipault Plume Cabin Spinner an option that is most practical only for light packers or a short getaway.

Tumi Tegra Lite International Carry-On : Best Lightweight Luxury Luggage

Tumi Tegra Lite

The Tumi Tegra Lite International Carry-On ,  is constructed out of Tegris, a woven composite material that Tumi developed specifically for durable, lightweight luggage.

Because Tegris is also a light material, this carry-on is quite lightweight for its size and for being a hard-shell luggage. It also has a distinctive woven look that stands out from the crowd of plain hardside suitcases.

The inside has a spacious main compartment with a divided area and plenty of pockets, making it easy to pack and sort your items. To further help with packing, the Tumi Latitude also comes with a hanger bracket as well as mesh tie-down straps to keep things compact.

The Latitude International is pricier than most carry-on options that can offer the same features, but if you are looking for luxury, they definitely deliver.

Tumi is also renowned for its customer service, offering repairs at their dealers and luggage tracking anywhere in the world. Every Tumi luggage features a metal plate engraved with a 20-digit ID number used to track the bag. This means that even if you happen to lose your luggage, you’re still able to track it with the one-of-a-kind Tumi Tracer program.

In a nutshell, Tumi is the epitome of you-get-what-you-pay-for luggage!

What to Look for in Lightweight Suitcases

While every feature of a suitcase has varying importance to different people, having a lightweight bag is a pretty universal need for travelers. Ensuring your luggage is lightweight means less of a struggle getting to and from your trips, and with airlines’ weight limits, increases the amount of items you can stuff in your luggage.

Although we are primarily focused on features that affect weight, there are other features that we encourage you to look out for, as well. Here are some things to keep in mind when searching for your ideal suitcase:

Purchasing the lightest weight luggage is important as it gives you the most packing space. Most lightweight luggage options are expandable, which can give you that additional space for last-minute items or ones you acquire on your trip.

I suggest considering lightweight luggage for international travel, as not all airlines are as generous in accommodating heavier baggage allowance. The lighter your luggage is, the more essentials you can pack with you in the cabin and the more likely you are to avoid excess baggage fees.

Lightweight bags are also much easier to lift, which makes it a selling point for those who want an easier experience getting their luggage into the overhead compartment, or transporting it places.

Want in on a little-known secret? Wheels are the hidden weight sink of luggage. Ensure that the wheels are constructed out of lightweight materials that roll smoothly. Spinner wheels made out of polyurethane and lightweight bearings are the optimum choice for those looking to cut weight.

Hard vs. Soft Luggage

Not sure whether to choose hard or soft luggage? Generally, hard side luggage weighs more due to the materials used for that more rigid and solid exterior. But this shell makes damaging the bag much more difficult, thus protecting your valuables inside. Its hard exterior also makes it less prone to theft, as it’s difficult to cut or slit open.

Also, hard side luggage is known to be extremely weather-resistant. This protects your valuables from wind, sunshine and moisture.

Lastly, hard side luggage is much easier to clean –– all you need to do is wipe the surface and you’re done! Soft luggage, on the other hand, absorbs water and is more prone to retaining smells and stains.

Made with flexible and softer materials, soft side luggage is best when you’re packing for more than what you’ve planned for. It’s much easier to stuff things inside your soft side luggage, and they often have handy external pockets. This allows you to store last-minute items such as toiletries or jackets.

Its soft exterior also comes in handy when you want to squeeze it in the overhead compartment, luggage racks, or buses. While soft side luggage may not be as “hardy” as its counterpart, it’s often more than capable of withstanding your typical airport and transport conditions.

As the primary concern for many, the price of a piece of luggage is very important. In this article, we’ll offer luggage options with a range of price points, but in general we recommend frequent travelers think of their luggage as an investment.

A higher price tag often means features like durability, tracking services, and warranties. When you travel a lot, you want luggage that is reliable. Avoiding the inconvenience of buying another one or sending it in for repairs all the time is a huge relief for any traveler.

Build Quality and Design

The amount of interior packing space is one of the biggest things to consider when purchasing luggage. Ensure that the frame does not eat into the interior area of the luggage and that there are no unnecessary bulges that reduce packing space.

Similarly, look for frames that are made out of light yet rigid materials. We are talking aluminum, graphite or fiberglass. Cheaper materials like steel or iron will often add a lot of weight to the overall body of the luggage.

Extra compartments, elastic cross straps, separators, and pockets is another thing to consider. These features can help compress your packed items and keep them organized. Expandability is also a great way for you to increase your storage capacity without adding on extra weight.

The lightest luggage is built out of fabric like nylon or materials like polycarbonate. These materials, although lightweight, provide a great deal of durability.

Some manufacturers may try to lower the overall weight of luggage by using cheaper, lighter materials. Having light luggage shouldn’t come at the cost of its durability, and manufacturers have plenty of options that offer durability at a low weight. This is why this list only includes luggage made of material I know will last you.

Always buy luggage that comes with a warranty. Search for brands with extensive warranties covering a wide range of issues and damages.

The length of the warranty is also a key element to look out for. A comprehensive warranty shows that the luggage company is confident that its product will last you a long time.

You need to consider the type of traveling you will be doing to get the right lightweight bag. If you’re typically just going on weekend trips, you will likely benefit from a carry-on size bag. Instead of blowing that money on heavier, larger-than-you-need luggage, invest in size-appropriate luggage that is built with lighter and stronger materials.

For longer, more intensive trips, consider investing in a full-size bag or luggage set.

Lightweight Luggage FAQs

Here are some of the common questions people ask when searching for the best lightweight suitcases, and my answers to them.

What is considered lightweight luggage?

This varies depending on the size of luggage that you are intending to buy. 10 pounds and below for a carry-on is generally accepted as lightweight.

Which brand of luggage is the lightest?

There is no consensus on the lightest luggage as it varies according to the type of luggage, but July, IT World and Lipault make the lightest carry-on bags currently available.

What is the lightest soft-side luggage?

Coming in at 3.8 pounds, the lightest luggage on the market is currently the IT Luggage World’s Lightest 21.8 Inch 2-wheel carry-on bag.

What is the lightest four-wheel suitcase?

The lightest carry-on four-wheel suitcase is the IT Luggage New York 22-Inch. The lightest checked luggage is the four-wheel American Tourister Stratum XLT 28-Inch.

What is the lightest material for luggage?

Polyester or nylon fabric are great for lightweight luggage. Polycarbonate is the best lightweight material for hardside luggage.

Final Thoughts on Lightweight Bags

With many airlines charging increasingly exorbitant prices for overweight bags, it’s become a necessity to travel light. Thankfully, with so many lightweight options available, you’re able to choose one that is resilient enough to withstand wear and tear while not adding extra pounds to your bag.

We hope that our guide has helped you figure out what kind of luggage suits you best. Do remember to do research before making any purchases, and check for any product warranty just in case!

Trying to pack light? Avoid “ultralight” carryon suitcases that weigh too much! To help you avoid overweight baggage fees, we’ve rounded up the best lightweight luggage (and we actually own most of them, too). And the best part? They’re all under 5lb !

Packing cubes are the secret to traveling carry-on only. Watch  this video  to learn why!

Best Lightweight Luggage

Table of contents.

Today’s suitcases come with a wide variety of cool features that affect transportation, packing, and protection. You can get wheel locking systems, built-in charging units, and heavy-duty hardware.

However, the thing to keep in mind is that the more bells and whistles there are, the heavier the bag will be! What you need is a balance.

Below you’ll find a full list of the best lightweight luggage with wheels including information about each style, reviews, videos, and pictures, too.

Lightest Carryon Luggage

What manufacturers claim to be lightweight and what truly is the lightest carryon luggage are two incredibly different things.

What does lightweight luggage weigh?

  • Best lightweight luggage for checked bags: 6 – 9 pounds
  • Best lightweight luggage for carryon bags: 4 – 6 pounds

Let’s start by setting the record straight: a carryon suitcase that weighs over 7-10 pounds IS NOT lightweight.

If cabin (carryon) restrictions require that your TOTAL weight be under 21 pounds, then how is that feasible when your suitcase itself weighs 9 pounds?

Read this post to learn how to pack for a 7kg baggage allowance !

The same goes for checked bags. Just because you have a 50 pound weight allowance doesn’t mean you need all of it.

However, if for whatever reason you need to bring an extensive amount of things on a trip (perhaps you’re moving to another country or studying abroad), then you want to make the most of what you can actually bring.

Don’t waste your weight allowance on a heavy suitcase!

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Carry On Luggage

This bag is simple and classic, and that makes it a keeper in our books. Travelpro is one of my favorite luggage brands because their suitcases are durable and easy to maneuver while also being affordable.

The Maxlite 5 is also one of the best lightweight luggage options for anyone who wants a soft-side case. You can travel anywhere with this and it won’t slow you down, thanks to its smooth 4-wheel spinners, stain-resistant and water-repellant duraguard coating and ergonomic, and high-tensile-strength zipper. Also available in 19″ carryon . Buy it here !

best-lightweight-luggage

Travelpro Maxlite Hardside Carry On Luggage

This Travelpro hardside carry-on bag is ultra-durable and ultra-light! The Maxlite expandable carry-on hardside spinner is designed to meet carry-on size restrictions for most domestic airlines while maximizing how much you can pack inside with its convenient 2” expansion option. Also available in carry on 20″ and weighs around 6.1lbs.  Buy it here !

Osprey Ozone Wheeled Carry-on 42L/21.5″ | Also available on Osprey

Osprey Wheeled Carry On Luggage

This is the bag that has been accompanying me on my long-term travels for the past year. You know I’m a big fan of Osprey and ever since I had to stop traveling with the Farpoint , which was backpacking perfection, the Ozone has become my new favorite and their new design weighs only 4.48lbs. Also available on Osprey website !

best-lightweight-luggage

Osprey Farpoint 36L Wheeled Luggage | Also available on Osprey

There may be certain trips where you don’t need as much capacity, which is when the Osprey Farpoint 36L wheeled bag can still offer the same amazing features that include a large panel opening, comfortable straps, and sturdy wheels to tackle uneven terrain.

And though this is marketed as a men’s bag, it’s worked well for a variety of users who say “it’s sturdy, well designed, and constructed—the wheels are heavily protected and unlikely to damage easily.” Also available on Osprey website !

Watch this video or read my Osprey Ozone 46 review for more details:

So far it’s worked as a carryon on most airlines, even Air Asia, but it may be two inches too big for budget companies like RyanAir or EasyJet. However, they also have a duffle or backpack version that’s smaller and would work for most budget airlines.

A post shared by alex TravelFashionGirl.com (@travelfashiongirl) on Jan 25, 2017 at 7:22am PST

My only gripe with this bag is that I bought the previous model in black but now they have it in blue. As soon as I have a travel stop in the US, I’m going to get this new color! Buy it here or on Osprey website !

Delsey Clavel 19″ Hand Luggage

I’ve been a fan of Delsey for the past few years, and one of my favorite things about the French brand is its attention to detail, clean aesthetics, and affordable price tag. Delsey definitely offers the most value, and this new suitcase proves it.

Delsey discontinued the soft-side Delsey Traversee Lite which I have and love, but the new Clavel hardside spinner is the lightest Delsey suitcase. This new lightweight luggage has a hard side and a hard-wearing zipper, which means it will stand up to wear and tear. Buy it here !

If you’re looking for the best lightweight luggage sets,  Delsey also has some awesome options!

best-lightweight-luggage

Lipault Original Plume Spinner 55/20 Luggage

Sometimes you want a simple bag without any fancy bells or whistles, and that’s when I recommend Lipault . This spinner suitcase is basic, but in a good way. Despite being 20”, it offers amazing capacity, so you can easily fit a week’s worth of outfits.

It’s also easy to carry and move, while the soft side allows for more flexibility. The top carry handle allows you to lift the suitcase with ease and comfort, making it easy to travel even in the most crowded of airports and train stations. Buy it here !

best-lightweight-luggage

Eagle Creek Gear Warrior 22″ Inch Carry-On Luggage

One of our readers raved about this great bag from Eagle Creek , so I thought I’d include it on  this list. It’s simple, easy to use and extremely light, which makes it a worthwhile addition to our list of the lightest carryon luggage pieces we could find.

It fits perfectly in overhead bins, however, you’ll have to use this one with packing cubes–there’s no dedicated spots for your items. Still, it’s got what it you need to make through a 3-day weekend in Manhattan or a road trip through the Adirondacks. The price right, too! Buy it here !

Samsonite Cosmolite Suitcase

During a recent trip to Los Angeles, I set off on a mission to find the most lightweight carryon suitcase with a hard side. I stumbled upon a Samsonite store and was astounded at the excellent selections for their Cosmolite and Lite Shock Collections.

I was in between buying either the Cosmolite or the Lite Shock and asked the TFG readers to help me decide as you can see in this video:

Although both suitcases were incredibly light, I chose the Lite Shock instead of the Cosmolite because it’s a newer model and weighed 2 ounces less. In fact, they each weigh UNDER 4 lb – talk about lightest carryon luggage!

A post shared by tpsytv (@tpsytv) on Apr 14, 2017 at 9:27am PDT

Using it on set for my TPSY TV packing videos!

Because it’s brand new and part of Samsonite’s premium collection, it was a steeper price tag than the other suitcases on this list. But so far, it seems absolutely worth it. Buy it here !

Aerolite Ultra Light 4 Wheel Carry On Luggage

Aerolite Ultra Light Trolley Bag

One of the best lightweight luggage options out there comes from Aerolite . It’s roomy enough to store all your belongings and small enough for those carry on only trips. An attractive, sturdy and lightweight bag, it’s easy to maneuver on uneven terrain.

It comes in a wide range of fun colors, particularly this pretty purple. You can’t help but feel happy when traveling with this colorful, easy to carry suitcase! Highly recommended! Buy it here !

Carry On Light 21″ Lightweight Carry-on

July Luggage Lightweight Carry-on

July is quite possibly the best brand for ultra-lightweight luggage for a hardside! They have a vast selection of colors, too.

Not only does this carryon weigh under 5 lbs, but it’s also made of vegan-friendly materials, has a strong German polycarbonate shell, and 32L volume that allows you to maximize space so you don’t waste it on the suitcase. With the July Carry On Light 21″ , you can use all the space for your belongings.

The luggage features ultra-light shell with only 3.9 lbs, a twin bar 3-stop telescopic handle, and SilentMove™ Series 2 360° double spinner wheels, YKK Japanese zippers, and zip closure with integrated TSA lock. Buy it here !

Antler Brixham 22″ Light Carryon

Antler Carry On Luggage

Perfect for travelers who like to pack as much as possible, Antler’s softside Brixham collection is designed to be spacious yet ultra-lightweight, with the carry-on weighing a mere 4.2 lbs! Monica Muldoon

Found the IT carry-on that only weighs 3.75 lbs!!! It’s a win!! Thanks Alex!!

Barbara Wilfand

Osprey also makes an 18”/36L Ozone that I love- it fits under the aisle seat on Southwest! Since I’m only 4’9” it is really exciting to have a carry-on I don’t have to put in the overhead compartment.

Alex

Hi Barbara, thank you for sharing your recommendation for lightweight luggage with us! The Osprey Ozone 21.5′ is one of my favorite bags, because it’s lightweight, durable, and lockable — making it perfect for a versatile array of travel: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-osprey-backpacks/ Happy travels!

Kris dc

Hi Alex! Found your blog yesterday as I was looking for the best lightweight luggage for our upcoming trip to Europe. Watched your review regarding the Osprey Ozone. Definitely fell in love with it but still not sure wether to go for it or for the Meridian. Do you have a comparison post/video for that? Thanks a lot! And also I’m looking for a lightweight luggage that’s not a carryon size but having trouble finding it in the blog. You’re a huge help and a blessing to every traveler. Beginner or not! More power to you!

Hi Kris, thank you so much, that is so kind of you!!! Have a look at this article where I compare four different osprey backpacks including the Meridian and the Ozone: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-osprey-backpacks/ Hope this helps. I would also highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions you have there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and recommendations. Have a phenomenal time in Europe!!

Eunice

Hi, Alex. This is a great article, thank you! We needed an extra hand luggage while in LA recently, and got the Delsey Turene based on your recommendations (from the live video in BKK)! And while looking for a bigger sized luggage for the family, we also spotted the Samsonite Neopulse and got that as well. Didn’t know it was recommended until I read this article today, haha! By the way, not sure if you’ve noticed, but you had the Samsonite Neopulse picture labelled as Delsey Turene in the comparison chart above.

Hi Eunice, thank you so much for bring that to my attention, I will get that sorted out! So pleased you enjoyed the video, hope you enjoy your new suitcases on many adventures!! 🙂

Sakshi Diwan

What about Lipault ?

Hi Sakshi, great suggestion, thank you for sharing!! 🙂

Deborah

Hi Alex, This was a great video on your choice of carry on. I am planning a trip to Europe in October and initially had my 25′ suitcase as my one and only, but due to restrictions, I have decided to go with my 17′ carry on and a awesome backpack that I ordered from Amazon. I was worried that the 17′ wouldn’t fit all my needs for 10 days which include 3 pairs of shoes, but after hearing your views, I think I’ll do just fine. Thank you.

Hi Deborah, thank you so much for your feedback! Have a great trip to Europe! 🙂

Colleen

Love TFG. Have been subscribed for years and love all the awesome hints and tips I’ve got from your site. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge Alex. So appreciate it!!!

Erika

I Has been using my remowa salsa for almost 6 years. I use to travel a lot because of Business and privat. It is so easy to handle: the wheels are the best you can find and the fact of the monotelescop System allow more space inside and also i love the fact that it is a hard robust Material (Polycarbonat i guess) so i can pack also fragil things!! Of course the schining Surface get scratshed some times but at the remowa store i could find a politure cream and it makes my remowa looks good again.

Jo

Sooo helpful!!!! Traveling to Europe in March and keeping this in mind!

Sweet Lily

I bought my Rimowa Salsa at Zappo’s, they have been fantastic in supporting this bag. It’s easy to get around, I set my ginormous purse on top and just wheel it with one hand. The case lets me do a busy, multi-outfit 4 day trip with no issues. TSA broke one zipper handle on the inside zippers, and I just broke another last week. They still work with a little nudge. Be careful on escalators, I scratched mine by not paying attention to the sharp edge of the step. When this one is kaput I’ll get another.

alex

That’s an awesome suitcase!

Ginger Roy

BRIC luggage is not on the list and that is for good reason! They have a very light weight luggage that intrigued me so I bought a set for a long European trip this past summer. When the bags are packed the wheels do not function well at all making bags very difficult to roll and the telescopic handle is very flimsy when extended making managing the pieces very difficult as well. I will pay attention to Travel Fashion Girl’s advice now as I decide on one of her luggage choices mentioned in this article.

Thank you for the feedback Ginger ?

Jennifer Aprill

I’ve been following your site for a couple of years now. Your tips and reviews (like these) have been super helpful!

Thank you Jennifer, I’m glad you’ve like them 🙂

Charlotte

Great post and perfect timing as I am looking into a smaller (19″) lightweight carryon. That Delsey one looks perfect.

It’s a great price, too!

Treva Powe

I have a Delsey soft sided suitcase that is over 10 years old. I have used it frequently and it is still in good shape. I love it!

Love Delsey!

Rebecca

Thank you for this article. I am working on packing lighter and really want to travel carry-on only in the future. These bags will be a great incentive to make it happen.

They’re awesome 🙂

Amy

Very informative article and i love the live video with more details. I have never heard of the Delsey line and hope to investigate these further. Thank you for all of the information! I need to replace my carryon suitcase that falls over every time I stand it on carpet? I don’t even pack the front compartments but it is very annoying in hotel rooms!!

Glad you liked the post Amy 🙂

Melita Routh

I don’t know if it’s possible, but do you think you might one day be able to show us on a plane how to fit luggage in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you. I live in regional Australia and the planes I sometimes travel on are small planes like a Dash 8 and I don’t think the suitcases would fit in overhead compartment.

Christine R

The two IT carry on bags look perfect for my sons for our upcoming trip to Costa Rica. I’ve added them to my Amazon wish list. Thank you so much for this blog post. Finding inexpensive, top-rated luggage is rather challenging! Cheers!

Awesome! Let us know how it works out Christine 🙂

Chelle Melton

I am gong to Italy in 2 days . Although, I have traveled abroad several times previously, I have never felt more prepared thanks to Travelfashiongirl.com ! All your post and tips have helped turn this over packer into a minimalist! I have 2 pieces of Delsey luggage and it is a dream! Thanks for your expertise!

Thanks Chelle! Hope you have a wonderful trip 🙂

Lynne

Just found this! Always looking for good, practical information to use when packing for our yearly trips to Nicaragua. Packing light without sacrificing what we need to take is always a challenge. Thank you for providing viable options!

Thanks Lynne! 🙂

Barbara

Thanks for this info. I bought a TravelPro International Maxlite4 last year and I love it. However, it doesn’t have spinner wheels so it is sometimes hard to maneuver at the airport and on the plane. I might give the Delsey a try. What do you do with all your old suitcases? My husband is complaining about all the storage space that mine take up. LOL

I usually share some of my luggage with family and friends but I do have quite the collection after acquiring these styles recently!

Liz

I love these suitcases! I’m kind of a suitcase addict. I just love having options. I bought a 19 inch in London three years ago and it’s my international traveler. My goal is to pack it 1Olbs or under for my next European trip!

Wow that’s incredible Liz!

Betsy M

Great post! I love the sound of the IT Los Angeles, but the handle is different than most. It probably allows for better packing without that weird skinny space traditional handles make, but how does it maneuver?

Hi Betsy, haven’t had a chance to try the IT suitcase myself but it’s very popular in Europe!

Sarah Y.

Always looking for lightweight luggage that isn’t going to fall apart after one trip! Thanks for putting this together.

Glad you like it Sarah!

Heather

This article was perfect timing! My luggage is definitely on it’s last leg, so I’ve been looking into new suitcases. I’m downsizing what I’m taking on trips thanks to TFG and the super helpful advice and going carry on only, so these are great options to look into. Thanks!

Thank you Heather! Happy to help 🙂

Devin

Thank you so much for the article! It was very helpful! Loved the chart.

Thanks Devin!

Jeanne Jonard

Great information! Thanks.

I went to Scotland and Ireland last year and took a “medium sized” suitcase which was around 42 lbs. The first week in Scotland I was by my self and couldn’t get the darn thing us the 3 flights of stairs in my first night’s B & B. What a mistake. This year I went to a 2 week archaeology school and a third week of touring. Iv’e been watching you so I bought a Delsey Chatillon (from your list). The bag was 19 pounds after packing, including shoes. I needed full rain gear and boots for school. I put the rain coat & boots into my backpack (which I used for purse) and still had room. I was so happy. I could carry it anywhere, lift it over my head for train overhead racks. It was a totally different trip. I tried to pack for 15 lbs, thinking that was my max but didn’t quite get there. Here I came to realize I was allowed 15kg (33lbs) What a happy mistake!! I’ll never pack heavy again

That’s such a great story! Love it ? I’m happy it worked out so well. Thank you for taking the time to share it!

Anel M

New to all these topics, thank you for an informative post.

Thanks Anel!

Katy Schlegel

This was so informative! Thank you! I just finished watching your Facebook Live and wanted to see all of the ones you featured. I’ve been looking for a lightweight carry on and now I’m thinking of getting the Delsey Traversee Lite thanks to you!

Thanks Katy! I hope you like it 🙂

Hi Alex, great video on suitcases. Timing is off for me, (bummer), I just bought the 6.2lb. American Tourister 20″ Skylite. it is a box inside which I also like for organizing as I chose. It feels lightweight. I love that Logel. I am a senior traveler & I love reading about your blog. Excellent. You are quite impressive. I really could have used your blog back in 1998 when I started traveling with only one carry on & have done ever since. I am traveling to Ireland and London in the fall, & for some reason I am having a dilemma over shoes to take. I only take 2 prs. 1 my Ugg calf boots, these are super comfy, stylish & waterproof. My 2pr, I am thinking will be a pair of leather slip-on loafers. Stylish & cute & comfy(platform style) Summit by White Mountain Braxton. But my husband thinks I should take hiking shoes. My thoughts are in London, I didn’t want to wear hiking shoes to walk around in. What are your thoughts? Thank you for help.

Hi Anne, great to hear from you! Are you planning to go hiking in Ireland? You definitely will not need them in London as there are no mountains 😉 It sounds to me like your Ugg boots would be able to tackle a light hike outdoors in Ireland? Otherwise, slip on loafers + boots sound like a good combo!

Nona

Information so valuable. I learned the hard way about international carry on regulations.

Sorry to hear that Nona 🙁

Elaine M

Oh I loved all the options and details you provided for each luggage! I need to purchase a new luggage and will use this post as my resource to choose the right one. I have read that soft sides luggage are better if you want to expand it in case you purchase too many items on your destination 🙂 . On your experience, do you agree with it?

Haha, yes they are if you need a little extra room to squeeze stuff in and then check your bag 😉

Marilyn

Thanks for reviewing these bags! I only use carry-ons when I travel.

Thanks Marilyn!

Yvette Zavatero

Costco has a nice Delsey set on sale for 119.00. One large bag and a carry on size. Comes with a built on lock and weight sensory that alerts you when the large bag gets to 49 lbs.

Great tip Yvette!

Linda Goodfellow

Great list of bags and really appreciate all your recommendations and research. I have to say I have finally gone on a trip carry on. What on earth was I thinking checking a bag all of these years? Alex, I have seen the light!!

Haha, glad you saw it 😉

Kathrine (Kathy) Spencer

Really enjoy your helpful travel tips and info

Thanks Kathy!

Jen Walsh

I love my Samsonite luggage. I don’t think it’s quite as light as these bags but it’s sturdy. I just bought the Osprey Porter 46, partly because you keep raving about the brand.

Hope you had a good experience with Osprey! I’ve heard rave reviews about the Porter backpack although I opted for the Farpoint myself 😉

Monica Vega

Loved this article! I actually have the Samsonite Firelite and am amazed at how light it is compared to my other cabin-size suitcases. But this article will be super helpful for my family, as they are looking to replace their heavy suitcases too! So thanks a lot 🙂

Glad you liked it Monica!

Kathleen Jones

Very useful overview. As a senior with some mobility issues, one value for me is whether the case is sturdy enough for me to perch on it when there are no seats left or when in a long queue. I’d guess the hard-side cases are better for this, of course, but wish I knew how much weight they can take.

To be honest with you, I don’t think I would feel comfortable sitting on these suitcases unless they had sufficient amount of weight inside to stay put. But then it would defeat the purpose of packing light…

Jennifer Fultz

Thanks for the great article! We are heading to Thailand and Cambodia and are needing some new lightweight carry-ons (especially for Air Asia’s tiny allowance).

Glad you liked it! This article might help you specifically for Southeast Asia: https://travelfashiongirl.com/backpack-or-wheeled-luggage/

Victoria

The handle of my trusty 5-lb carryon finally broke after 12+ years so I need a new bag. I had this post with me when I went luggage hunting yesterday. Look forward to tomorrow’s talk to learn more!

See you then!

Ditte

Been thinking about getting an Osprey for awhile and this definitely makes me want one even more 😀

THEY ARE SOOOO WORTH IT 🙂 Plus, they have a lifetime guarantee!

Aimee DuFresne

Thanks for this info! Came at the perfect time as looking for new lightweight luggage for a European trip. This really helps me narrow down the endless options.

Glad tp help Aimee!

Nicole P.

Thanks Alex for these articles! I’m looking for a new suitcase but I was so nervous that I would get the wrong one. This article definitely helped narrow down selections!

That’s awesome Nicole! Happy to help 🙂

Kristin

Amazing article! i am definitely on the hunt for the perfect carry on suitcase 🙂

Thanks Kristin!

Thanks Kristin ☺️

Linda

Loved the idea of packing things in coat pockets!

Glad you like it Linda 🙂

Jane Kelly

How about a soft rolling duffle? I have an IT small rolling duffle . Very Light weight. It has been to Morroco and recently Costa Rica. With only two wheels, isn’t there more room for packing? I also have the IT MegaLite Spinner. Found both at Marshall’s in Canada under $100.00

Great idea Jane! This one just focused specifically on this suitcase style but rolling duffles are awesome!

Laura Lyford Rickards

I have the complete set of hard body Heys and although I love it, I find the carry on to be not suitable because I need an outside pocket for my documents. I have to have them handy as I host groups. I am thinking of a hybrid. Any suggestions?

HEYS! I can’t believe I forgot to add Heys to this post – thank you for the reminder as they have an incredible new suitcase that is super lightweight, too. The Delsey Traversee is my favorite and has an outside pocket 🙂

Carolyn Davis

Love, love, love your blog and travel packing lists, TFG! I’ve been reading your blog for sometime now and this is the first time I’ve ever posted. Being a semi-frequent, solo, and single travel “fashion” girl myself, I’m constantly on the lookout for a great, lightweight carryon that meets airlines’ increasing restrictions, looks great, and is light enough for me to handle easily. Plus, it needs to be good quality! Thanks so much for this article — I’m going to be looking into the Delsey Travelsee carryon. Very affordable, too! Thanks so much for all your advice! Cheers!

Thank you for your first comment Carolyn! Glad to know a fellow fashion girl enjoys the blog 😉

Sam

I second the Delsey Chatillion. A great bag and the perfect side for carry on. Personally I like the two-wheeled bags better than the four because you get more packing space for the bag volume and they are great on the cobbles in my area. Good post as well – it is very handy to have something that weighs up the pros and cons like this.

Thanks Sam, glad you liked the article! I would’ve loved to have gotten the Chatillon so it’s good to know it’s a good buy.

Tandren Dawson

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for reading!

Susan Kayden

That Firelite is really gorgeous! A bit out of my price range, unfortunately. I’ll check out the Delsey’s.

Haha, yes it is a higher price point but fortunately, there’s many other budget-friendly options 😉

Sandy Ross

I am in the market for a new suitcase and this list will definitely be helpful in making my choice.

That’s great Sandy! Good luck with your search 🙂

Susan Squires

Thanks for this timely post. Planning a trip to Paris and in desperate need of new luggage. I’ve been shopping on line and in stores…such a difficult decision!!! I really could use some advice like this. 🙂

I’m glad you found it 🙂

Simone

My boyfriend has a Samsonite Cosmolite and I have always been a bit envious – I bought my own lightweight Samsonite just shortly before the Cosmolite came out. It really is a great suitcase.

Yes, they’re nice looking bags!

Ekay

We have been using the Samsonite Cosmolite which I got in England for a bargain. Love it! It’s so light and easy on the carpal tunnel syndrome. However, I find pull handle with 1 bar not as ideal as those with two because if you place your handbag on the bag, it doesn’t rest very well and tend to slip off the handle. We also talk got the Rimowa Salsa Air as it’s extremely light and easy to push, but we didn’t want t pay so much to have my handbag slipping off when placed against the pull handle.

That’s a good point. Thanks for pointing that out Ekay!

Addi

The Samsonite Firelite is gorgeous, I really love the pretty blue colour inside. I have way too many suitcases already though!

Yes it was a difficult choice. The blue vs the silver but I’m very happy with the purchase 🙂

Elaine

I can’t get the Delsey code to work at Amazon. What am I missing?

Sorry Elaine, it’s only good on the Delsey website: http://rstyle.me/n/cqi8cvb9qn7 I just fixed the info on the post. Thank you for letting me know 🙂

Bobby Graham

Hi there – I enjoyed your review of all these light bags; good work. I also write and travel light and my preferred carry on bag is the Samsonite, which weighs only 1.5 kgs.

Great choice Bobby!

Great suitcase choices. I just picked up an Air Canada carry on bag that weight 4.8 lbs. it’s a spinner too. Found it at Walmart for $68 plus taxes.

Good bargain Linda!

Diana Dickey

Thanks for this post! I have been looking for a lightweight suitcase for my upcoming Europe trip. This information is very helpful!

Glad you like it Diana 🙂

Bonnie

This blog post was perfect timing. I have been hunting for a good, affordable carry-on bag. Thanks for your insight!

Let us know which one you end up choosing!

Michele

Thanks so much for this post! Taking a 10 day trip this fall and looking for the best carry on; you gave me lots of great options 🙂

Perfect! Hope you find the perfect one 🙂

Robin

Love these suggestions. I’m reading daily for my upcoming Fall trip to Germany!!

Hope you have a great time in Germany!

Kim Poole

I love the Delsey Traversee suitcase.

Eileen Frederick

Packing light is always a challenge, but a good place to start is lightweight luggage. I sure could use a new set for our next adventure!

Exactly. Heavy luggage can instantly weigh you down.

Terry A.

Thanks so much for this list! I need something lightweight, and I will definitely check these out.

Glad you like it Terry!

Rachel

I use duffle bags! They weigh next to nothing and fit a ton! When walking from airports, train stations, and bus stations I just wear it like a backpack.

Another good choice!

Rhonda

How about luggage without wheels? I have the https://www.ebags.com/product/ebags/etech-20-weekender-junior/261000?productid=10264764 which is 2lbs 11 oz.

That’s a great bag Rhonda! We also have an upcoming article about the most lightweight backpacks next month. Stay tuned!

Donna Willes

Love this article! I just recently purchased the IT Los Angeles bag and honestly, I can’t believe what a HUGE difference it made to my overall comfort when traveling, I could seriously almost lift it one handed in the overhead. I have a little bit of a luggage obsession and will be using your chart for any future purchases 🙂

That’s such a good bag – LOVE it luggage!

LeAnne

Thank you for this helpful list!

Happy to help 🙂

Catherine

I love delsey suitcases. Mine is larger but has served me well for years. I’d love to get a smaller ultra light one like the style you recommend. Great article, as usual.

Thank you Catherine ☺️

Robin

I was just reading about choosing 4 wheels vs 2 wheels, and read that 4 wheel models (spinners) generally have less space than a similar 2 wheel model would. I notice most of these are 4 wheel spinners. Any thoughts? We need to get new carryon bags before a trip this fall and want to get the best model we can. Thanks!

Hi Robin, this guide explains everything about how to choose the best suitcase: https://travelfashiongirl.com/suitcase-101-step-by-step-guide-to-choosing-the-right-travel-luggage/ There’s no particular reason I’ve chosen 4 wheels instead of 2 – they just happen to be the most lightweight items I could find 😉 More important than the number of wheels is the suitcase shape. Less compartments and a nice rectangular opening allows you to maximize space. That’s why I like the Delsey Traversee the best – ticks the boxes for me.

Best Crossbody Bags | Best Gym Bags | Best Travel Backpacks | Best Laptop Bags | Best Sling Bags | Best Messenger Bags

This Amazon bestseller has amassed over 6,000 five-star ratings. Customers love its no-frills design and polyester exterior that's stain and scratch-resistant, so it can take a licking during your daily commute.

Plus, it's expandable with plenty of compartments to hold your computer, water bottle, and everyday carry. We love that this spacious laptop bag in fact offers independent compartments for all your essentials with front zipper pockets to file compartment to a foam-padded sleeve accommodating even large laptops

But that's not all: the expansion zipper allows you to increase the capacity so that it'll be able to carry as much stuff as a duffle bag! We also love how the strap lets you attach the briefcase securely to our luggage, freeing our hands during travels. Switch between the removable shoulder strap and soft carry handle for the most comfortable way to carry it.

These days, you can take a briefcase to less manicured offices like, say, a construction zone. This one from Filson checks all the boxes of a work brief, and it's infused with the outerwear brand's all-weather features like a water-repellent nylon fabric and slotted pockets to hold small multi-tools.

Firstly, we love how crazy comfortable it is to carry: it is light, with handles made of bridle leather that'll soften up and mold to your hand over time. There's a strap for slinging it across your back, and even a trolley strap to slide over the handle of your rolling luggage.

Secondly, it looks very tough. Made from water-repellent, abrasion-resistant nylon, this briefcase case held up to our heavy use and even comes with a double layer over the bottom to last even longer. Lastly, it just looks good. While you might not sport it to some fancy skyscraper office, it's hella everyday-friendly and makes you look rugged and professional at the same time.

Mack Weldon bills this as a hybrid briefcase that works like a portable desk, and we have to agree. It's loaded with functional compartments, and a padded organizer panel to keep charging cords, headphones, and your wallet safely in place. Plus it even comes with an adjustable strap to clip on like a mini messenger bag.

Crafted with 100% industrial twill, this lightweight, ultra-portable briefcase is built to last and designed to revolutionize your work life. Equipped with two padded tech compartments, your valuable devices stay safe and secure inside the Ion. Our favorite part is that it's got a non-slip laptop rest that ensures stability while you work on the move. There's even a handy organizer panel for cords, pens, and more, which has helped us organize our essentials effortlessly and effectively.

Frequent flyers will love this brief with tons of travel-friendly details like a clamshell opening that lays flat in an overhead bin, water- and scratch-resistant fabric made from recycled materials, and an internal mesh divider to hold and separate your electronics and underwear. A perfect carry-on for those last-minute business trips.

All in all, this professional commuter briefcase gives us ingenious use of space and smart compartments. Inside, you'll find a well-organized sanctuary for all your essentials, from a laptop sleeve to a tablet slip to raised mesh sunglasses and elastic slip pockets. We also love that it's got a quick-access front pocket and a hidden water bottle pocket to ensure we stay hydrated while traveling. The zip opening is also very wide, allowing for easy access. Plus, the luggage pass-through slides effortlessly over a suitcase handle, making travel a breeze.

Another Amazon bestseller, this one receives top marks for its classic buckle design and its premium leather construction at a relatively affordable price point. Beyond its value, customers love how sturdy it is, holding up even after years of use.

Crafted to withstand the test of time, this leather briefcase uses durable hardware, tear-resistant lining, and reliable YKK zippers to ensure a look that will get better with age, and we love how the shell has already developed a nice patina after one year of usage. In addition, this briefcase is also designed with your comfort and everyday practicality in mind, featuring multiple pockets inside and outside, a convenient key lock closure, and a padded, adjustable shoulder strap. Overall, we found that its spacious dimension plus timeless look easily cater to your professional needs while providing a striking presence.

This is really a smart, well-designed briefcase, and I have been recommending it to a lot of folks. It’s fancy and sustainable and does not look cheap at all. Crafted from premium lightweight and waterproof fabric, it has been able to keep my valuable contents safe and dry, even on rainy, snowy days. Inside, you'll find a large external pocket and a padded compartment specifically designed to cradle your MacBook with care, not to mention a handful of pockets and slips and compartments here and there (and probably too many paper-type compartments than you might actually use).

We also love its big outer sleeve, which lets us store really essential stuff and keeps them easily and readily accessible. For the avid traveler, this briefcase comes with a trolley sleeve as well that slides effortlessly over luggage handles. If you're searching for a travel/work bag that blended low-profile, high-quality, and solid utility, this is it.

This is my go-to briefcase for a workday in the office or a casual day out with friends or a work-filled weekend when I need to carry a laptop with me to grind in a nearby Starbucks. I personally am a fan of its flap close: crafted with both zip closure and a flap closure with magnetic buttons, it has ensured my belongings are securely stowed to provide me some peace of mind on the go. And I love how adjustable the shoulder strap is to offer me the perfect fit for my comfort, whether I carry it over one shoulder or crossbody-style.

Inside, you’ll find spacious tablet and laptop pockets that cater to your modern tech needs, and the multiple internal pockets will keep your other essentials tidy and within reach as well. And the look roams somewhere between rugged and professional, with a shell fabric that has been able to withstand any wear or tear for over two years so far for me.

Briggs & Riley Expandable Work-Brief

Budget-friendly, Briggs and Riley's bestselling brief is crafted from 1600D ballistic nylon to be water- and abrasion-resistant so it can last through years of commuting. Customers love how lightweight it is given its ample storage. More importantly, it is expandable on demand, providing an additional 2.5 inches of packing space for those spontaneous travel needs.

Inside, you'll find a monstrosity of organization: the three-section layout comprising an organizer, main compartment, and laptop compartment. And your effortless everyday organization awaits with its elastic slip pockets, pen loops, and gusseted compartments too.

In addition, we love how the zip-around expansion, corner SpeedThru™ pocket, and convenient slip-through back panel add to the briefcase's overall travel-ready design. The bag can also be packed traditionally or laid flat like a suitcase, accommodating bulky items with ease.

Zip up and gear up for a seamless, safety-first commute with this waterproof briefcase. Here we consider it a must-have for daily adventures. Constructed from Rains' signature waterproof PU fabric, not only does it feel extra smooth it also ensures carrying strength and durability so it’ll last you. While it boasts capacity, its clever design and reduced proportions keep the whole thing easy to carry and light. Still, there are various zips and front utility pockets which are perfect for storing passports, chargers, and other small essentials.

A large zip pocket sits between the front pockets and the main compartment, offering ample space for small tablets and notebooks. Inside the main compartment, you'll find a padded laptop sleeve, along with zip and mesh pockets for even more efficient organization.

A no-nonsense briefcase that gets the job done. We love how it's part practical and part professional and part stylish. Offering specialized compartments for all your tech essentials and a dedicated back compartment for seamless file organization, I've been able to experience the ease of organization that every professional deserves with this briefcase. Convenience is also at our fingertips with its easy access front zip pocket and the large front organizer pocket, complete with tablet and phone pockets, as well as pen pockets.

We also found this briefcase really comfortable to carry. It features a full-sized top handle and an adjustable, detachable strap with a non-slip shoulder pad. At this under-$200 price tag, it's practically a steal.

Take to me to : How to Choose the Right Briefcase for You | How We Made Our Picks

Investing in a briefcase might feel a bit, uh, old old-fashioned . But your daily work bag doesn't have to look so dusty. After all, our modern-day working experience isn't so tied to stuffy cubicles as it is a local cafe or shared workspaces…or our own kitchen. And briefcases have morphed accordingly. These days they're lighter, but no less well-constructed, more adaptable to the many environments and “offices” we inhabit. And, crucially, they're a lot more stylish. That’s not to say the bags aren’t still elegant (they very much are), but they’re capable of taking a licking and still ticking. But only the best briefcases will look better the more you use them. Briefcases also help you focus on the essentials, ensuring that you’re not overpacking while providing plenty of storage. Dedicated laptop sleeves provide safe and secure storage with siloed zipper pockets for tablets, notebooks, and even smartphone pockets. Having everything organized in one place can help eliminate the digging around that sometimes happens in larger-sized bags, as everything is essentially all right at your fingertips.  So it's time to grow up, but if you're not sure where to begin, we’ve got you covered with a veritable A-team of options. From the hyper-technical to the rugged workhorses to the classically elegant, the high-end flexes to the affordable entry points. So, yes. Investing in a briefcase might feel like the turning of a page to being slightly more serious—but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun considering all the new options in the process.

The Best Everyday Briefcase: Bellroy Via Work Bag

Image may contain: Bag, Tote Bag, Accessories, and Handbag

Via Work Bag

Bellroy's got a knack for minimalist design with maximalist functionality and its Tech Briefcase is a deceptively simple bag that belies its many features. The strategically-designed interior delivers maximum storage capacity in a handsome minimalist package. Unzip the sturdy nylon shell to pack in everything you need for a day at the grind: a laptop, water bottle, and a spare sweater to battle office AC extremes. Inside you'll find a padded laptop sleeve, a mesh zip pocket for keeping your smaller items like keys and sunglasses protected, and a generous center cavity for anything else you may need to haul to and from the office. On the outside, it's got a cleverly hidden zip pocket for easy-access items like a book or an iPad as well as a luggage pass-through feature that lets you attach it to luggage. Its weather resistant fabric and coated zippers help protect your goods from the weather, too. But the most clever feature might be the hidden AirTag slip pocket so you can feel safe and secure.

The Best Value Briefcase: Time Resistance Leather Briefcase

gq best briefcase time resistance full grain leather

Time Resistance

Full-Grain Leather Briefcase

Amazon might not be the first place you look for a top-shelf briefcase, but we'll forgive the oversight. Crafted in Italy from fine full-grain leather with heavy brass hardware, this classic design by Time Resistance is fit to pair with your sharpest suits. The Best Rugged-but-Refined Briefcase: Filson Original Briefcase

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, Canvas, Tote Bag, and Briefcase

Rugged Twill Original Briefcase

Filson has a storied legacy going back to the Gold Rush days as a manufacturer of quality and dependable goods and clothing, which is to say that their Original Briefcase is built to last. Constructed from a heavy-duty twill fabric that’s similar to what you’d find on a sturdy work or chore coat , the exterior will stay together no matter how rough on it you are. It’s also lightly waxed so that it’s water-resistant if it gets caught in the rain. Critically, the bottom is super reinforced so that when you’re loading up the two wide stow interior pockets, the fabric won’t rip or shred. Plus, the interior pockets keep everything organized and at a glance when you need it most. Rugged yet refined, the Original Briefcase is pretty much exactly what you’d want from a bag nowadays: something capable yet timeless and with plenty of functionality so that you buy it once and hold onto it forever.

The Best Leather Briefcase: Carl Friedrik Palissy Briefcase

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, and Briefcase

Carl Friedrik

Palissy Briefecase

Briefcases are so inherently utilitarian that it might be odd to think of something so functional as sexy. And yet, that’s exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you see Carl Friedrik’s Palissy Briefcase. It feels like the briefcase you’d see the employees of Sterling Cooper carrying back in the ‘60s, thanks to an extremely elegant vachetta leather, which is the de-facto go-to material for high-end bags. But it’s not just that gloriously smooth, blemish-free exterior that will age gracefully. The gorgeous nickel-silver hardware really pops and will only look better the more you use the bag. Plus, it’s on the slimmer side of things, while still ensuring you’ve got enough room for a laptop, a tablet, and multiple other essentials thanks to a handful of interior zipper pockets. So, yes, this is a sexy bag, thank you very much!

The Best Rolling Briefcase for Travel: Tumi Alpha 3 Briefcase

gq best briefcase tumi nylon

Alpha 3 Collection Compact 4-wheel Laptop Briefcase

A rolling briefcase is a briefcase in the same way that a flying car is a car. And we'll admit that, personally, collectively, we'd probably opt for any other briefcase on this page, paired with some of our favorite carry-on luggage , to handle our business class needs. But with those confessions out of the way, we recognize that some of you are living that Up In the Air life, and optimization trumps vibes. So cash in those credit card points and get Tumi's Alpha 3 Collection rolling briefcase.

It's a softshell briefcase that holds laptops up to 15" and lets you knock out a 2-day trade show without subjecting your spine to 12-hour days lugging presentations and paperwork. Since there's no need to stay svelte, the Tumi brings a removable accordion folder, mesh panels, a gang of media pockets, a USB-A port (though it's BYO battery), and enough room for a change of clothes. Maneuvering through the airport is easy, too, thanks to its 360-degree spinner wheels and a sleeve that easily attaches to your other luggage, making for a kind of rolling luggage totem pole. Of course, it passes muster as a carry-on, so you don't have to worry about checking your work essentials. After that, your only concerns are figuring out in-flight WiFi and how to expense those in-flight whiskeys.

The Best Convertible Briefcase: Porter-Yoshida & Co. 3Way Briefcase

Image may contain: Bag, Backpack, and Briefcase

Porter-Yoshida & Co.

3Way Tank Briefcase

Todd Snyder

Porter-Yoshida & Co.'s Tanker bag is inspired by military flight jackets: you can see it in the standard-issue sateen fabric with contrasting orange interior, which makes finding your goods easy. Visibility gets even easier: the main compartment hinges open from one side, lying flat like luggage. Technically there's no laptop sleeve, but the slimmer zipped pocket is where you'd stash your MacBook. (We'd recommend bringing your own protective sleeve.) But we haven't gotten to the “3Way” part of the Tanker's name—and why we love this brief. It can go from tote to cross-body to backpack in a flash, with integrated backpack straps flipping out of a zipped pocket and clipping into place in seconds. Which makes running around town (or the terminal) a lot easier on your spine.

The Best Briefcase for a Weekend Away: L.L.Bean Stonington Work Bag

gq best briefcase ll bean cotton

Stonington Daily Carry Work Bag

If you need to carry a change of clothes—maybe because work's taking you on an overnighter, or you're hitting the gym before clocking in—you want a bag that can handle the extra gear without looking like you dragged your weekender into an executive meeting. Bean's hybrid is simple enough to blend in everywhere, but has enough structure to keep things looking put together. Canvas, leather handles and zip pulls, and L.L.Bean's classic Northeastern style bring a vintage (but not old-timey) style. We'd probably opt for one of the two darker colors; they look a little more serious, and since this is untreated cotton canvas, they'll hide the inevitable coffee spills and accumulated dirt better.

The Best Splurge-Worthy Briefcase: Goyard Ambassade Briefcase

gq best briefcase goyard calfskin leather

Goyard Ambassade briefcase

There's a reason your favorite rappers all name-drop Goyard a dozen times an album. The French luggage and bag house deals only in absolute grails, the type designed specifically for flaunting at your side as you descend the stairs of a private jet. This soft-sided briefcase allows you to bring all that pure opulence with you into work every day, with its iconic hand-painted, coated-canvas exterior and calfskin trims practically screaming, “I'VE MADE IT!” And honestly, if you've hustled hard enough to afford a bag this beautiful, you really have. (Speaking of price, we should clarify: Goyard's Ambassade is, obviously, not $0. Goyard doesn't sell this bag online. You'll need to call or visit a shop to get yourself hooked up. Prepare to spend four figures.)

The Best Large-and-In-Charge Briefcase

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, Briefcase, Electrical Device, and Switch

Thom Browne

Mr. Thom Briefcase

Office attire had been in the doldrums before Thom Browne came along to shift it into high-fashion territory . Of course, his brief is going to do the same. The elegant bell shape pays homage to vintage luggage, opening like a doctor's bag so you can dig around inside easily. Brass hardware against the lightly pebbled leather, with a small hit of Browne's signature red-white-and-blue grosgrain on the hang tag feels very now . There's only a single zip pocket built into the lining, but acres of space in there—at eight inches front-to-back, this brief's double the depth of almost every other briefcase option here. That means it'll happily fit your laptop, documents, and everything else during the workweek, then swallow a couple Oxford cloth button downs and some underwear as a chic weekender bag.

Your Briefcase-Related FAQs, Answered

There are a few non-negotiables when it comes to a quality briefcase, in our eyes: A laptop sleeve, ideally padded. At least two compartments for stashing chargers and things like keys, pens, and a granola bar for the midday lull. It should close so people can't dash off with your MacBook while you're ordering a half-calf.

From there, we get into matters of priority. Personally, we want enough space to stash a water bottle (hydration, so important). We also want the option to carry it with handles or sling it over our shoulder with an (ideally removable, definitely comfortable) strap, because not every day needs to be arm day. But we have a fashion-forward model or two that don't have either, and one Platinum Club-ready model that swaps straps for wheels. You gotta know what works for your work.

Finally, you gotta decide what looks right. You don't want to be hauling around a briefcase that makes you feel like a kid in his dad's clothes, nor do you want a brief that puts you at a disadvantage in the room. A big fashion flex might be your personal dream, but may send the wrong message if your weekdays are spent soliciting charitable donations. On the flip side, you can absolutely make a rugged Filson work with your power suit. Ultimately, you're the best judge of where cool and crushing it come together in the best briefcase for your situation.

Construction: A briefcase gets used and abused for 5/7ths of the week—more if you're a weekend road warrior. As a result, we look for top-quality fabrics, supple leather, well-sewn seams, hardy carry handles and straps, and zippers that don't bind or feel ready to blow out the first time you get a little overzealous packing for the day. Quality isn't always proportional to price, though up to about $1,000, every extra hundo or two tends to bring upgrades on the specs.

Style: We're past the Mad Men era of uniformly dark suits and boxy leather briefs; briefcases are now as aesthetically varied as the jobs you'd use them for. You can go sleek or fashion-forward, simple or rugged. But whatever briefcase you carry (or sling over your shoulder), it should feel like it means business in the way you need it to.

Storage: We're looking for a well-organized, adaptable interior that'll protect your laptop in its own sleeve and let you stash both odds-and-ends (from keys to keycards to headphones) and bigger stuff (maybe even gym gear) in smart, accessible ways. And we like exterior pockets on soft-sided briefs for easy grab-n-go gear.

Travel + Leisure / Jessica Juliao

While many travelers opt for a backpack as a trusted travel companion, we think tote bags offer similar (if not better) features for certain travelers. Tote bags are convenient for quickly accessing items like a phone or wallet since your belongings are kept closer to the body.

It’s important to invest in a tote bag (or any piece of luggage for that matter) that fits your needs as a traveler. There are tons of different bag styles out there, so we pulled recommendations and notes from seasoned travelers and Travel + Leisure editors to crowdsource the best tote bag options from travel experts. Plenty of packable, convertible, weekender, and leather tote bags came highly recommended, and we highlighted why each bag earned praise so you can make the most informed decision whether you’re a frequent flier, road tripper, or office commuter.

Best Overall

Mz wallace deluxe tote.

The large storage capacity and efficient organization make it an excellent personal item for flying.

The laptop pocket isn’t padded.

This quilted MZ Wallace tote bag earned major points for having a spacious capacity without feeling bulky or weighted down when it’s packed full. An ideal bag for air travel, it can fit carry-on essentials while still being able to fit underneath an airplane seat, and the zippered top keeps everything safe and sound. There are tons of pockets for storing items, including a 13-inch laptop pocket (unpadded) and five other smaller pockets for lip balm, phone chargers, and wallets. Although we found this tote bag to be exceptionally lightweight, it boasts a trolley sleeve to secure the bag to a suitcase to give your shoulder a rest when needed. It also comes with a detachable shoulder strap to carry the bag as a crossbody when desired.

This bag came highly recommended after thorough testing and the only slight inconvenience we ran into is that the tote is unstructured so if there isn’t a laptop in it, the items sag at the bottom. However, the variety of pockets help to distribute the weight, so we still think this bag is the ultimate travel companion for storing the essentials.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Quince revive nylon large tote.

It conveniently folds up for packing and is impressively lightweight.

There isn’t a top zipper.

The Quince Revive Nylon tote bag was praised by our experts for its lightweight material and portable design for traveling. The bag is made with durable nylon, it never feels cumbersome to carry, and the fabric design makes it easy to fold up the bag to place it in a carry-on or backpack without taking up much space. With designated pockets for a laptop, water bottle, and smaller items, we love that there is a spot for both everyday and travel essentials for supreme versatility. If the tote gets dirty while traveling, you can spot-clean the nylon fabric with soap and water, and it comes in Oxford blue, olive, and black color options that easily hide wear and tear over the years. Because the tote bag doesn’t have a top zipper, it scored slightly lower than our top pick, but we still think the flexible fabric and slim design of the tote helps keep it close to your body while walking through a crowded airport or down busy streets.

The Details: 17 x 13 x 7 inches | Recycled nylon | Water resistant | 15-inch laptop pocket

Best Open-top Canvas

L.l.bean boat and tote bag.

It can accommodate bulky items thanks to the wide-mouth opening.

It doesn’t have any organizational features, so you’ll want to use packing cubes or pouches.

Beach days, picnics, and road trips are the best uses for this spacious canvas tote from L.L. Bean. Made from heavyweight cotton canvas, the tote was originally designed to carry ice from a car to an ice chest back in 1944, and it still boasts the brand’s impressive 500-pound weight capacity (though we hope your travel essentials will never weigh that much). While we’d normally be wary of a travel bag without any pockets, the bag has a generous capacity, which makes it ideal for blankets, lunch boxes, shoes, or any other bulkier item needed for a day or road trip. And when it comes to durability, you can’t beat a tote bag constructed with enough reinforcement to carry over a dozen cinder blocks.

The Details: 13  x 12 x 6 inches | Cotton canvas

Best Machine-washable

Baggu duck bag.

The cotton is machine-washable, and it comes with a crossbody strap.

The top has a magnetic button closure.

Traveling can be hard on luggage, so we love that you can toss the Baggu Duck Bag in a washing machine to prolong the life of the tote. It came highly recommended after one of our team members spilled an entire burrito inside, and all it took was one rinse cycle to get it looking good as new. The canvas material is made with 65 percent recycled cotton from pre-consumer waste like old socks or T-shirts. In addition to the tote handles, the bag also comes with an adjustable crossbody strap to carry the bag over the shoulder. It has enough room to carry a laptop up to 15 inches long, and there is a small zippered pocket on the inside for a wallet or earbuds. One thing to note is that the top has a magnetic button closure instead of a zipper.

The Details: 15.75 x 11 x 4.75 inches | Recycled cotton canvas

Best Open-top Leather

Milaner woven handbag.

It’s big enough to be an overnight bag if needed.

There isn’t a laptop pocket.

This woven Milaner leather tote bag is the ultimate tote bag for flying, commuting, or an overnight trip. The larger size can accommodate bulky items like clothing, shoes, or a laptop, and there are two small zippered pockets for wallets and phone chargers. Thanks to the structured design of the woven Nappa, suede, or Vachetta leather, this bag is super easy to pack with travel essentials without feeling cumbersome to carry. It doesn’t have a top zipper, but it does feature a slim shape so the bag is kept close to the body. We also recommend using the dust bag it comes with when placing the bag under an airplane seat to keep the contents from spilling out or getting the bag dirty from the airplane carpet.

The Details: 20 x 14 x 3 inches | Nappa leather

Best Sustainable

Béis east to west tote.

It’s made with 100 percent recycled material.

It only comes in two colors, and the white could get dirty quickly.

We’re big supporters of eco-friendly luggage that is still just as durable as this tote bag from T+L-loved brand, Béis. Made with 100 percent recycled polyester and recycled faux leather trim, the bag comes in simple black and white shades. There is a padded laptop pocket for laptops up to 15 inches long, two water bottle pockets, two slip pockets, and one zippered pocket so there’s a spot for everyday and travel essentials. Other helpful features for travelers include a trolley sleeve for carrying it on a suitcase, a key leash so you won’t have to dig around to unlock the door (plus you can attach an AirTag holder to it), and a zippered pocket in front. We can’t forget to mention the two lengths of tote handles and a detachable crossbody strap.

The Details: 17.13 x 14.17 x 9.06 inches | Recycled polyester, vegan leather | 15-inch padded laptop pocket | Luggage sleeve

Best Lightweight

Longchamp tote bag.

It folds into a fraction of the original size for superior packability.

The leather straps aren’t padded.

This lightweight tote bag is ideal for both maximalist and minimalist packers since it folds into itself and can easily be stored in a larger bag without taking up valuable space. Despite the featherlight design, the bag is made with a hardy recycled polyamide canvas that can withstand the test of time. Besides the excellent portability, we love that the tote bag has a zippered top  with a large leather flap that closes over the zipper to give peace of mind that items are safely tucked away while traveling. There’s only one small zippered pocket inside the bag, which could be a slight drawback for some, but we think the packable design is well worth the lack of pockets. The bag comes in seven colors ranging from neutrals hues to bolder tones, and the leather straps, though unpadded, give the bag a chic look to complement any outfit.

The Details: 12.2 x 11.8 x 7.5 inches | Recycled polyamide canvas, leather | Packable

Best Convertible

Caraa studio tote.

It has a convenient modular design to carry the bag as a tote or backpack.

The exterior shoe pocket can only accommodate smaller shoes.

Can’t decide between a tote or backpack? This Caraa Studio tote bag has a two-in-one design to carry it as either, offering the best of both worlds. With detachable shoulder straps, the leather tote bag can be converted to a backpack in seconds or carried over one shoulder if you’re in crowded areas like a subway or sidewalk and want to keep the bag close. Best of all, there is tons of built in storage to stay naturally organized while traveling. Our favorite features include the 17-inch laptop pocket and shoe compartment on the side of the bag to separate footwear from the rest of the main compartment. Although the pocket can only hold smaller shoes, it can be a game-changer for certain travelers. And there are eight other pockets built into the interior anti-microbial lining to store phone chargers, wallets, passports, and more when you’re en route to a destination.

The Details: 18 x 13 x 7.5 inches | Italian leather | 17-inch laptop pocket

Most Durable

Carhartt legacy east/west tote.

This bag is made to last with a sturdy design and hardy fabrics.

The ends of the zippers don’t connect to the fabric, so small items could escape.

Camping, ski trips, beach days, and other outdoor activities can sometimes speed up the wear and tear on a tote, but that’s not the case with Carhartt’s Legacy East West Tote. We’re confident this bag is built to last due to the heavy duty 600 denier polyester and DWR coating to keep the elements from seeping into the tote. After four years of our constant use while traveling and commuting, the tote earned high praise for not showing any signs of letting up on quality anytime soon. With a zipper top and several slip pockets on the interior and exterior, there are spots to store a phone, keys, and wallets safely in the bag. There are gaps on each end of the bag because the ends of the zipper aren’t sewn to the fabric, so watch out for smaller items in the bag since they could fall out.

The Details: 16.5 x 13.5 x 7.25 inches | Polyester | Water resistant

Best for the Beach

Carve designs treasure tote bag.

Carve Designs

It's the perfect size to fit everything you need for a beach day (including small towel.)

We wish it had some small pockets for storing accessories.

Whether you’re en route to the beach on foot or airplane, this tote bag is specifically designed for tropical vacations. While this tote is essentially one large pocket (without smaller areas to store accessories or essentials), it's the perfect size to take with you to the beach and to lunch afterward without lugging too much around. It's stylish enough that light packers may even use this as their main vacation purse and, paired with the matching treasure clutch , everything you need will be kept organized and ready to go. We love the white cloud texture of the outer materials paired with the stylish brown straps that are both comfortable and durable.

The Details: 14.5 x 15 inches | Cotton

Best for the Office

Bandolier tote bag.

It has various pockets for a laptop, sunglasses, and a water bottle.

The tote straps could be more comfortable.

A day in the office is like a mini trip, so it’s important to be organized and have plenty of space for items when you’re away from home. The Bandolier tote bag offers a spot to pack office essentials like a laptop, a water bottle, a phone charger, snacks, a wallet, and more. The laptop pocket can fit technology up to 15 inches wide, and there is a leather sunglasses sleeve to protect fragile eyewear en route to the office. There are several other zippered and slip pockets to organize smaller items or a water bottle, and the D-ring loop on the tote handle is designed to hold other Bandolier accessories like a keychain or earbud pouch. The entire bag is made with a sleek pebbled leather, including the leather tote straps, which could be more comfortable with padding. It also comes in black, brown, and gray colorways.

The Details: 18 x 12 x 6 inches | Leather | 15-inch laptop pocket | Sunglasses pocket

Best With Shoe Compartment

Minkars weekender bag.

The bag comes with a separate shoe compartment, toiletry case, USB port, laptop pocket, and plenty of other thoughtful features for travelers.

It can get heavy when packed full.

A dupe of the iconic Béis weekender bag, this wallet-friendly version has similar features for a fraction of the price. While it’s jam-packed with helpful features for travelers, it received the highest praise for the separate compartment at the bottom of the bag that can store shoes, toiletry cases, hair tools, or any other item you want to keep separate from the main compartment. The structured bag has a wide-mouth opening and is super easy to pack thanks to the 15.6-inch laptop pocket, included toiletry case, and various other pockets for staying organized. Plus, the weekender comes with convertible straps to carry it as a tote or crossbody bag as needed, and it comes in pink, black, or cream color options.

The Details: 17 x 16.5 x 8 inches | 15.6-inch laptop pocket | Shoe compartment | Toiletry bag includes | Trolley sleeve

Best Multi-use

Dakine verge weekender tote.

It’s useful for the outdoors or traveling.

It might get heavy when it’s packed full.

This spacious tote bag from Dakine is equipped for everything from camping and beach days to trips to the office and air travel. When it comes to traveling, the bag features a padded laptop sleeve for devices up to 16 inches; a handy trolley sleeve; and a separate zippered compartment in the bottom of the bag to organize items like shoes, toiletry cases, or clothing as desired. Made with durable recycled nylon and polyester, the tote looks rugged and works well as a weekender bag for camping or for packing beach day essentials like towels and snacks. Travelers can carry the bag as a tote with the top handles or it also comes with a detachable crossbody strap.

The Details: 23.5 x 16 x 11 inches | Recycled nylon | 16-inch padded laptop pocket | Trolley sleeve

Best Organization

Troubadour carrier tote.

Troubadour

It has tons of pockets to stay naturally organized while traveling.

The bag might be too large to fit underneath an airplane seat.

Minimalist and practical, Troubadour’s Carrier Tote is our favorite bag for packing efficiently and staying organized on the go. The designated laptop pocket is padded and can fit devices up to 17 inches in width — the largest pocket size for laptops of all the bags recommended. In addition to the protective laptop pocket, the tote features a quick-access phone pocket; a medium-size zippered pocket for an e-reader; and several other slip pockets for items that can easily get lost at the bottom of a bag like charging cords, lip balm, and keys. The only possible downside to this sleek bag is that the 24-liter capacity and stiffer fabric makes it difficult to fit it underneath an airplane seat.

The Details: 18 x 12 x 7.5 inches | Recycled polyester, vegan leather | 17-inch laptop pocket

Best Foldable

Away the packable carryall.

It’s a very spacious tote that comes with a stuff sack to pack it away in a backpack or suitcase.

It has a flimsy shape, so small or heavy items fall to the bottom of the bag easily.

Away’s The Packable Carryall is the perfect packable tote bag to toss in a purse whether running errands or sightseeing in a city. The tote bag is incredibly spacious when it’s folded open, but it compresses down to a mere fraction of its usual size thanks to the lightweight recycled nylon material and stuff sack. Sometimes packable bags can lack travel-friendly features, so we love that the bag features a zippered top for security; a trolley sleeve for portability; and an interior zippered pocket for storing phones, wallets, and keys while on the go. To keep track of the stuff sack, there’s also a loop to secure the zippered pouch on the inside of the tote. The unstructured design of the tote means that small or heavy items with a pool at the bottom of the bag, but beach towels , jackets, or any bulkier items will fit perfectly and provide some structure to the bag.

The Details: 19.7 x 15 x 9 inches | Recycled nylon | Water resistant | Trolley sleeve

Other Travel Tote Bags We Liked

The tote bags below still came highly recommended for travelers, but didn’t quite make our list of winners.

Portland Leather Tote Bag : It’s a very portable tote bag due to the smaller size, but it isn’t the most practical for long trips with less storage and organizational features.

Bellroy Tokyo Tote : This bag has tons of pockets and storage for just about anything you would need while traveling, but it’s on the smaller side, so it could fill up quickly.

Ogio Rise Tote : The bag can be converted from a tote to a backpack, which can be helpful for travelers, but the drawstring opening is a slight drawback for security reasons.

To create this list of the best travel totes, T+L editors and trusted travel experts recommended their favorite bags they have tested on their own travel adventures. With over 30 totes tested, we whittled down our list of the best bags for any and all travelers based on capacity, portability, ease of use, and overall value. From sleek leather totes to convertible weekender bags, we handpicked various bags that we can’t recommend enough for outdoor activities, air travel, or commuting to the office.

Tips for Buying a Travel Tote

Buy for your intended activity.

Not all tote bags are best for certain types of travel, so it’s important to invest in a bag that meets your needs. Traveling somewhere wet and rainy? You’ll want to opt for a more rugged tote bag that features waterproof or resistant materials like nylon or polyester for protecting items. Leather tote bags work well for air travel or office days, but you’ll likely want to skip bringing it to the beach or for camping where a canvas tote will hold up much better to wear and tear.

Consider organization and size requirements

When it comes to traveling by air, you’ll want to look at dimensions, organization, and other helpful features like trolley sleeves, USB ports, and convertible straps. For outdoor activities like camping and beach days, a spacious and flexible tote bag can be helpful for packing bulky items. We recommend packable or foldable tote bags for travelers looking for a backup bag to keep in a purse or suitcase, rather than using it as a bag to commute or fly with since they can lack structure and organizational features.

Prioritize comfort

Tote bags can be hard on the shoulders and hands when carried for long periods of time (i.e., navigating an airport or while out and about), so we recommend looking for lightweight materials and padded straps to reduce the possible strain. Some tote bags come with convertible straps to carry the tote as a crossbody or backpack, so be sure to look for bags with modular designs or trolley sleeves to place the bag on a suitcase if you’re looking for better portability and versatility in a tote.

While it depends on the size of a tote bag, more often than not, it will count as a personal item or possibly a carry-on bag if it’s large enough. A personal item usually has to fit underneath an airplane seat and if it doesn’t, it could qualify as a carry-on bag, so you’ll want to double-check the size restrictions of personal items for your specific airline since it varies greatly depending on the carrier.

Tote bags offer the ability to quickly and conveniently access items like a phone and wallet since the bag is kept closer to the front of your body compared to a backpack. Backpacks distribute the weight of your belongings better, but a comfortable tote bag should never be too cumbersome to carry. Look for features like padded handles or a convertible crossbody strap for comfort. Tote bags are also easier to take on and off while traveling, which is convenient when you’re on the go and maneuvering tight places such as airplanes, trains, and cars.

What our editors say:

I am obsessed with this soft-sided checked bag – it fits an absurd amount of stuff. You can easily pack enough clothes, shoes, accessories and gear for a two- to three-week trip, and even when it's filled to the brim, the wheels and handle make it easy to maneuver the suitcase across many types of terrain. Mine has been checked numerous times, and the darker-colored fabric with its subtle design means any scuffs are pretty impossible to see and it hasn't scratched or dented at all. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

Each one is made from 100% recycled plastic that is collected in coastal communities, in order to prevent it from going into the ocean. The one downside is that the shelving does take up some room, so you might be trading convenience for maximum capacity. – Sharael Kolberg

We tested to see how the overall structure of the bag works for travel needs, along with the maneuverability of the wheels and comfort of the handle on a range of surfaces from moving walkways to cobblestones. Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

  • Accessibility and Aging
  • For maintaining independence

Traveling in a Wheelchair Is Hard. But This Wheelchair Let Me Do a Fulbright in the Philippines.

Two photos of the EZ Lite Cruiser with illustrated borders and a green background.

I’m a lifelong power wheelchair user, so international travel has often been difficult for me. Unpaved sidewalks and rampless buildings, cars that won’t fit my 375-pound customized wheelchair, and inaccessible public transportation are just the start of what discourages me from venturing out into the world more.

That’s why I felt a nagging fear as I sat at the San Francisco airport in August 2022, about to embark on a nine-month Fulbright research fellowship to the Philippines—a country without comparable accessibility standards to those in the United States.

I’m an architect, and I’ve devoted much of my career to advocating for accessibility. My Fulbright research was focused on the accessibility of elementary schools. To do this, I needed to be able to travel nimbly—a task I knew would be incredibly challenging.

Yet one item that alleviated my fear sat neatly folded next to my mountain of luggage: my EZ Lite Cruiser , a lightweight travel power wheelchair.

This chair opened up countless opportunities in the following months, including allowing me to ride in nearly any car, get onto a motor boat, and visit small towns to immerse myself in local communities.

EZ Lite Cruiser

A lightweight travel power wheelchair.

This travel wheelchair is light enough to lift up stairs, and it folds compactly to fit in the trunk of most cars. It isn’t the most comfortable, though.

Buying Options

It fits in the trunk of a car.

An EZ Lite Cruiser.

The trip started with a travel nightmare that was almost impossible to make a contingency plan for.

The only wheelchair-accessible transportation service in Manila, where I flew into, canceled on me mid-flight—leaving me stranded at the airport.

To get to my hotel, I rented a cargo van. As I watched five grown men carry my heavy-duty wheelchair into the back of the van, I noticed a sixth person single-handedly pick up the EZ Lite Cruiser along with my suitcases.

It was then that my anxieties really eased about how I was going to get around. The EZ Lite Cruiser can easily fit in the trunk of most cars, folding up to slightly larger than a medium suitcase (29 by 22.5 by 13 inches).

I didn’t need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle anymore to do my research. I could use any car.

At about 45 pounds, the EZ Lite Cruiser chair allowed me to be a lot more agile during school site visits. Whenever I reached an inaccessible point, like a step or stairs, it was easier for someone to lift me in this chair than in my regular one. And, with the help and commitment of several kind people, the chair even made it possible for me to get into a boat!

It’s simple to maintain and repair

I’ve gone through the long and arduous process of getting my regular wheelchair repaired several times; this involves insurance approval, ordering parts, and a specialized technician to install them.

With the EZ Lite Cruiser, none of that is necessary. I can order replacement parts directly off of the website, which also has instructional videos on removing and installing new parts.

My chair was around four years old by the time I left for my trip, so I ordered new rear tires, motors, a battery, and armrests for the EZ Lite Cruiser, to make sure it was in tiptop shape for my nine-month adventure. I’d previously purchased a separate portable seat cushion from another company, since the cushion that came with the standard model had flattened over the years.

The parts came within a week, and my brother-in-law was easily able to install the parts by following the instructions in the videos. By the end, I felt like I had a brand new chair.

By contrast, I requested repairs for my regular chair four months prior to the trip, but my insurance didn’t approve them until 10 days before my departure date. Predictably, the parts didn’t come in time, leaving me with a worn-out and potentially unsafe wheelchair to use for nine months.

It’s not great for everything

People lifting someone in the EZ Lite Cruiser wheelchair.

Although the EZ Lite Cruiser does the job of getting me around, technically it’s too big for my body, and therefore I use it only when I really need to.

I’m a 3-foot-6-inch woman with brittle bones and a significantly curved spine, so there are several features unique to my customized chair that make it much more comfortable and safer for me to use—which is why I was adamant about bringing it to the Philippines.

When I was first shopping for a lightweight electric wheelchair, in 2018, the EZ Lite Cruiser was one of very few options available. I chose the standard model because it was the least expensive (and it wouldn’t be covered by insurance). But it also had the fewest bells and whistles.

The fit isn’t perfect. My short legs do not hang comfortably off the front edge of the seat. And the seat is a little too wide, leaving me to jostle around. (For reference, my customized chair’s seat is 12 inches wide, whereas the standard EZ Lite Cruiser’s seat is 15 inches wide.)

The lightweight aluminum alloy frame feels too unstable on any surface that’s not flat and smooth. It also doesn’t have many shock-absorbing properties, so I feel all of the bumps and cracks on the ground—something that my brittle, achy bones didn’t love as I navigated the uneven pavement and steep slopes of the Philippines’ urban and rural terrain.

Wirecutter’s accessibility and aging-in-place editor, Claire Perlman, had a similar experience while traveling through Greece with her deluxe slim EZ Lite Cruiser chair . Because of the seat’s configuration, she couldn’t reach the joystick without a large pillow behind her. And the simple footrest did little to keep her feet in place as she drove over endless cobblestones, leading to at least one near-fall.

That said, this chair allowed her to take the trip. And she even visited the island of Santorini, famous for its picturesque (and inaccessible) stairs.

It’ll be more comfortable customized

If you have the budget, you can customize (to an extent) the EZ Lite Cruiser to your body and needs. The EZ Lite Cruiser comes in four different sizes, and the deluxe options offer better back support, thanks to five different seat-reclining positions and a plusher seat cushion. The deluxe models also offer different lengths of footrests and seat belt types.

There are a few limited customization options available on all of the models. The joystick can be installed on the left- or right-hand side of the chair. You can also choose between a 10 Ah lithium battery (which is airline-approved and has an approximate 10-mile driving distance) and a 15 Ah lithium battery (which is not airline-approved and has an approximate 15-mile driving distance).

But if you’re flying with your chair, you should know that not all airline personnel are properly trained on which lithium batteries are permitted onboard, so you should be prepared to explain it to them if necessary. The company offers documentation that you can request, to show airline agents that the wheelchair is safe for flying. Even with the airline-approved 10 Ah battery, you’ll always have to disconnect it before flying.

Discomfort and inconveniences aside, the EZ Lite Cruiser was a worthwhile investment and one of the best decisions I could make for my independence.
